n F1 race in Austin, Texas! Be still my heart! Last year, in my not so personal letter to Bernie E. and Tony George, I urged them to get over themselves and reinstitute the F1 race at Indy. I also suggested using the IRL cars for an American Grand Prix. I take it all back. Austin is perfect. It is just far enough away to make it a fun road trip and there is 6th street and lots of other fun hangouts including the near famous Crown and Anchor. I can imagine Mavericks, Hill Country, and Lone Star, and all our other Zone 5 friends having special events planned to make the race even more enjoyable. If this really happens, we should have a great new track to try out for DE’s, and maybe a Club Race. Game on. Last month I suggested saving August 6th, 7th, and 8th for our annual Round-Up celebration. Now is the time to sign up. We have a great line-up of things to do, and the cost is darn near free. Only $45 gets you a great show at the Grapevine Opry, a catered dinner, Hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, fun stuff like show and shine, and road trips. We even have some time to do a little wine tasting and investigate the unique shops in Downtown Grapevine. We have negotiated a great rate at a hotel near Grapevine Mills where we can gather to enjoy the great company. If you choose not to stay at the hotel, come join us anyway. Let’s make this a gigantic party. Check the ad in this month’s Slipstream, or check it out on our web. See ya there! Robyn Howard has threatened me with a near death experience if I didn’t enter an autocross soon. Well, I stopped by the June event at Pennington Field in Bedford. I thought I was just going to stop by and say Hi. Wrong. She spotted me, and with a look that struck fear into my very soul, told me to get a helmet and report back. Yes Ma’am! Bryan Bell jumped into the right seat, and helped me thru the maze. My times were starting to get respectable, so I told Bryan I was going to go it alone. I did pretty well except I forgot to drive about ½ the course. No wonder my times were so low. I think I need a little more practice.

Mav of the Month Our “Mav of the Month” is Joel Nannis. Club Race Chair, Membership Chairman, DE Registrar. These are just a few of the activities Joel Nannis does for our region. 2

I think he has been doing some of them since before I was born. Before my car was born for sure. For being everywhere at once, including working with us at the Hope House, Joel is the July MAV of the Month.

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Joel dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Joel, thanks for all you do. (BTW, you owe me a free black flag pass!) Mike

nd the saga continues! I found another Boxster that was a couple years newer with all the extras I was looking for. Wow, could this really be true? It’s seal grey with a metropole blue interior and top. Heated sport seats and a complete aero kit, and a 3.6 conversion. Four days after taking delivery I was driving it into work knowing everyone would be keeping an eye out for the new car. With all eyes on me, well maybe the car, as I backed into my shady premier parking spot, I lose power as white smoke billows out from behind me. “Great, what is it this time?!!” As I’m getting out, a friend points out the water on the ground and as I smell the liquid I realize it isn’t water but gasoline. Poof, I hear the sound of the ignition and I start yelling for a fire extinguisher... “NO REALLY, GET IT NOW!” As I douse the flame, I come to the realization of how blessed I am. Just think if it would have happened on the road side or even worse, in my garage, I could have lost everything. Instead, it happened next to my place of business with everyone watching and a fire extinguisher being produced within seconds...WOW! As I stated last month, enjoy every minute while driving your Porsche, one never knows when it will be your last. Hope to see you soon,

Enjoy

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

W

e were treated with a beautiful reading by Linda Bambina as everyone nibbled on their dinner. Linda read from the book she created using photos taken from the beginning to the completion of the Hope House backyard project. What a wonderful reflection of the time and effort of those who gave to this project. Thank You, Linda!! The first order of business for our June meeting was to approve our minutes from the May meeting. Mike Brodigan made a motion to approve the minutes. Clint Blackman seconded the motion. All around approval in the room…minutes approved. Mike’s second item on his agenda was Round Up information. This wonderful event is scheduled for Aug. 6th-8th. The cost will be $45 per person. Participants will stay at the Springhill Suites in Grapevine. Mike gave the group a run-down of the schedule for the weekend which looks busy and absolutely FUN!! On Friday the 6th there will be a happy hour at Love and War in Texas. The next morning everyone can enjoy a Car Show followed by an “Elvis is Back” show in the afternoon. Next, comes a wine tasting, then appetizers and drinks at the Silver Fox. If you have not had enough,

then you will be treated with a wonderful dinner back at the hotel catered by Esparza’s Restaurant. The next morning, a road trip to RUF is scheduled with lunch provided by Hans and a nice tour of his beautiful shop. This sounds like a action-packed weekend! Mike still had a few items on his agenda to discuss. Mike reported that we have paid for everything we have done at the Hope House. Currently, we do not need to ask for any more money. Last on Mike’s list was information about setting a nomination committee for the upcoming Board election in November. We must have a committee set in July. We will not have a July Board meeting due to Parade activities, so Mike will work on getting a committee together. Whew… Mike finally said all he needed to say. Clint Blackman announced that he has a Sunday Drive scheduled for June 13th through the East Texas Trails to the Blueberry Ridge Farm. I bet it will be a Thrill on the Hill!! Jim Falgout reported that the club must pay sales tax on items but we do not charge sales tax on items that we sell. Also, “We have money.” Joel Nannis graced us with his presence this month to give us an update on Membership. We currently have 1,110 Primary Members, 783 Affiliate Members which totals 1,893 Members. MRPCA Rocks!! Joel also announced that the Club Race went very well. He commended all committee members for doing an excellent job for making it a success. We even received a wonderful compliment from the Scrutineer who said “this was the BEST organized race he has ever been to.” Joel also announced that a special award was given to Jan Mayo for ALL of her years of dedication and hard work as GRID QUEEN. Last on Joel’s list was announcing that DE’s are going well with the next one scheduled in September at MSR. Carey Spreen announced that he will be helping with the Fun Drive for Round Up. It will be a 2 tier event where the driver can simply take the tour over to RUF or compete in the Rally. Pat Friend announced that he has found a company that will do credit card sized name badges. He thought it would be a good idea to give members who attend any of the Maverick events one of these name badges. The name badge would include the person’s name and their car information. The cost will be about $350 per 100. Clint Blackman made a motion that we order 500 badges then re-evaluate in several months to see if we should continue. Denny Payne seconded the motion. All yes’s in the room… motion passed. Pat also announced that he would be helping out with the “Porsches in the Park.” Jack Griffin chimed in to encourage everyone to come on out to the Concours within the Concours at Cooper Aerobic Center. The Best of Show prize is a $4,000 complete physical from Cooper. Other prizes include free memberships, $800 worth of prizes from Boardwalk Porsche, and the top prize for the Porsche winner is a beautiful 911 model.

8

Jan Mayo announced that Pat Friend will be the new Advertisement Chair. For those of you who have not heard, Jan will be moving to Colorado Springs in August. Jan your presence at all of the events will be greatly missed. Please keep in touch with all of your Maverick friends!!

Travis Howard reported that the May 16th Time Trial/ Autocross had a decent turn-out with an interesting course design. He also noted that the Time Trial at MSR was pretty full with minor incidents…just some fluids on the track but otherwise everything ran smoothly. The Autocross for June 6th at Pennington currently has 24 people signed up. Bryan Bell will make sure Carey Spreen has insurance for his Fun Drive at Round Up.

Linda Bambina feels like she has been on a roller coaster ride for the past several months getting every detail taken care of for the completion of the Hope House Backyard Project. She had many words of thanks for those who helped her along the way which included Jan Mayo, Mike Brodigan, Wendy Shoffit, and Christy Payne. Linda also keeps in close contact with Lisa Huffaker and Lisa gave Linda some astounding information about how many clients have come through the doors of the Hope House. In 3½ years, there have been 3,500 clients needing the services of the Hope House.

Lisa Steele thanked Andrea Bell and Christy Payne for all of their hard hospitality work at the Club Race…the BEST girls to have by your side!!

Mike had a few reminders before we wrapped everything up for the evening.

Christy Payne reported that the Happy Hour at Kincaid’s had a little more than a dozen people in attendance. Father’s Day at Speed Zone is set for Saturday June 19th. Zoom! Zoom! Christy also added that the Founder’s Day/ Christmas Party is moving along and she is working out all of the details. Autocross/Time Trials will have their own separate awards Party.

• Bryan Bell will be running the September Board Meeting

Denny Payne reported that the website is going good and that the Slipstream ads look great on the website. Denny still needs for Chairpersons to give him dates of their events so they can be added to the calendar. Mr. Payne is also kickin’ around an idea about having “selfserve classifieds” on the website. Sounds cool to me!

No Board Meeting in July

Mav of the Month…

We honor Joel Nannis this month as our Mav of the Month. Meeting Adjourned at 8:15

Wendy Shoffit reported that there were 64 racers and 43 people driving the DE at the May Club Race. She also announced that clubregistration.net is now accepting credit cards and the fee is slightly less than PayPal. Wendy also added that Parade is in about 4 weeks and for those planning on going there is a Parade get together on June 22nd. As Wendy is always planning ahead, she asked the Board if we want to do a new Directory for the upcoming year. Everyone agreed that it would be great for the New Board to have a new directory. Jack Griffin had nothing else to say since he already gave his input about the Auto in the Park at the Cooper Aerobic Center. Bob Lewis was also present but had nothing to report on. Chris Christensen announced that the next Happy Hour is scheduled for June 17th at Wildwood Grill in Southlake. More Happy Hour locations will be added soon. Richard Bradley gave a big Thank You to Christy for all of the new ads she created…they look awesome! Richard also wants people who are going to Parade to take lots of pictures and plan on writing an article…PLEASE! July 9

Porsches, Dinosaurs and Water By Jack DuFon, age 14

T

he scent of rain was growing as we all met at the Duncanville Whataburger. We were unknowingly about to embark on a perilous journey that would challenge our belief that we would return home with a clean car. After a brief drivers’ meeting discussing our route, we lined up and began the 30 mile trek to Cleburne. All 23 participants were gathered in formation and roaring down Highway 67. Soon after, we stopped at a local Braums for a restroom break. Unfortunately for me, my father wouldn’t let me eat any ice cream in the car. Bummer. Near Cleburne we diverged from the highway onto small country roads. The scenery was magnificent! The soft light from the dark clouds and the water in the air made for a surreal vista. After a spirited drive we found ourselves redirected by the GPS. Fueled by our trust, we followed the indicated route (from the GPS) and were pleasantly surprised by a lightly traveled narrow country road. All was going well until it started to rain. It wasn’t falling hard but rain is rain, especially to a covered, hand-washed, loved and cared-for piece of German engineering. As usual my dad was trying to avoid washing the car, so he was sweating bullets the whole drive.

Photos by Jack DuFon a nice undercarriage wash. We continued down the road. And then in the wake of a five foot flood gauge we were looking at a lake. Yes… another water crossing! This time about six inches deep, which was problematic because of our lowered 4-½ inch ground clearance. Lucky for us, the 911 in front of us also had a lowered suspension so we knew if he didn’t make it, we could just turn around. Our group began to cross, slowly and not so surely. Amazingly we all made it, without anyone stalling or getting washed away. Finally we arrived at Dinosaur Valley. We followed the park guide to the river and she directed us to some fossils. We saw the fossils but in order to see the actual dinosaur tracks, you had to cross a

river. Under n o r m a l circumstances there were dry stones to walk across, but as we all knew there was more water than planned. The stones were submerged in a couple inches of water which made for a slippery crossing. Too slippery. Four people in our group fell but it was worth it because the prehistoric tracks were amazing. As we dried ourselves off and began to depart, we realized after all, we might need that car wash.

A short while later we faced a mighty challenge. Right after the road turned to cut limestone (!) we found ourselves facing a fourinch-deep water crossing. Looking like the Hoover Dam overflow canal, we crossed inchby-inch and finally There’s nothing like a good car wash with your SD buddies! made it across with 16

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear I sat in an ecology class at Tarrant Community College in 1970 and looked at slides of a river that caught fire in Ohio due to the pollutants that had been dumped into the river and tributary streams (some legally) for ages. Saw photos of Japanese citizens standing at oxygen stations getting a breath of oxygen, red faced, eyes watering etc. The class was based on science, and in retrospect, was geared to get us young recent high school grads to understand the impact of what we were doing to our planet. The scientific method as a means to solutions was reinforced in our classes. Ask a question, do background research, construct a hypothesis, test yer hypothesis by doing experiments, analyze yer data and draw a conclusion, then communicate yer results. Since that time I’ve witnessed carbon monoxide reduction mandates to reduce photochemical smog. Oxides of nitrogen reduction (also a photochemical smog that can damage lung tissue), the banning of dichlorodifluoromethane (R12 Freon used in air conditioning systems) as it was damaging to the ozone layer, Hydro carbon reduction etc. etc.. Burning petroleum was always at the top or near the top in creating these unwanted emissions. I suffered thru a lot of bad automotive manufactures’ engineering answers for emission reduction. Porsche has always responded with some pretty amazing engineering. Always went way beyond what was mandated and set the reduction of pollutants bar very high for themselves. Now it is CO2 that has been postulated as a problem. A very big problem. I believe in data and the scientific method. I became interested in the CO2 emission investigation over a decade ago. Plus I have always thought that fossil fuels were a problem for many reasons and I cannot possibly be given enough space here to explain all my thoughts on this subject. Currently NASA, NCAR, NOAA, many of our European friends etc. are gathering information and data that simply seems to point to this hypothesis as being correct.

Ponder this... water? Weather patterns go crazy with droughts, flooding, crazy hurricane seasons? Or will our planet respond to huge amounts of C02 in ways no one has envisioned? Is the entire scientific community wasting a lot of time on this one? Probably not............ I certainly do not know. But I will follow this with great interest. I’ll wait for the scientific community to either be given the means they need to bring this to a conclusion or watch the politicians of the world make decisions and hope they do not screw things up too bad. Meanwhile I cannot wrap my brain around a Porsche without a flat 6 engine making all the right sounds. Will they go for full electric power plants? Maximum torque at zero RPM. Where is the electric power going to come from? Battery technology currently in use is a joke. Rare earth materials being used that are not in great supply. Just a bridge technology till better ideas come along apparently. Hybrid Porsches are on the verge of hitting our shores. That’s a fact. And they will not be slow goofy looking Prius wannabes! It is going to be most interesting. Porsche is about to require all dealers to have someone on staff in the shop that has been extensively trained to be able to render the electric drive systems harmless before work begins. The training will be extensive and it puts a technician in the position of declaring, “Ok, work on this system now, and you will not be jolted with a huge life threatening voltage.” I have tried to figure out who in my shop should be saddled with this responsibility. Only one tech per dealer will initially be trained for this task. Porsche just does not have the training capacity to train multiple techs for each dealer in a time frame that we would like to see. It is our reality. As a shop foreman I feel the need to make it my responsibility. Yet I want everyone in the shop to have this knowledge as soon as possible. Nonetheless it is a huge change in workshop dynamics. That is my reality.... Still I find it most interesting and cannot wait to see how things shake out in the future.... Just Ramblin Along! Cliff

So now what? Will the Gulf Stream be interrupted and a new ice age occurs? Polar caps melt and many areas go under

Club Racing is Not Just For the Boys by Lisa Steele

H

ave you ever felt an equal amount of pure nervousness and excitement all in one moment? Club Racing is that ball of nervousness and excitement all rolled up tightly in the pit of your stomach and MORE exciting than I ever thought it really would be. Many questions went through my head once I made the decision to take the next step from DE’s to Club Racing. Will I be able to keep up with all of the men? Will the car handle two drivers or will it have lots of mechanical issues? Will I be able to be aggressive, but level headed and smooth at the same time? I decided to just jump right in with both feet and have FUN! Everyone I spoke to prior to the race weekend said that I needed to have a goal, so my goal was to simply finish the weekend CLEAN. Saturday morning practice gave me the opportunity to get used to the HANS device that I have never worn before and feel the handling of the car. Everything was feeling great until the realization hit me that I have to do practice starts and a fun race after lunch. Here went the nerves again! With some helpful advice from my wonderful mentor, Colin Graidage, and my very supportive husband, I took a few deep breaths and got excited once again. As we started our engines and went out for the practice starts, the adrenaline was definitely pumping. As we lined up twoby-two at the back straight, I actually said out loud to myself “I can’t believe that I am about to do this.” I was completely surrounded by these incredibly loud beautiful cars and there was no backing out now. We came down turn 11 and although I could not actually see the green flag, I knew we were green because everyone was accelerating and taking off from me. I made it through corner 1 and the rest of the corners without any incident…I did lose a position but “I 20

Photos by John Sandusky Made It.” I was starting to get a little more confidence as we practiced the other two starts and I began my first “fun race.” Once I got off track, I felt a sense of relief, but disappointment too because I just was not very strong with the starts and I was a bit too timid. After watching Mark take the car out and be 3 seconds faster and do the starts with such intensity, I knew I had a lot to learn. Once again, Mark gave me some great advice that night and really helped me visualize what I was doing wrong and what I needed to do to be more successful on the starts. So, I had a good night’s sleep (okay only about 5 hours because I had so many things to think about) and I woke up ready to get the “real race day” under way. As all of the cars lined the grid ready to go out for our first sprint race, I just kept saying to myself “stay ON the bumper of the car in front of me and don’t let there be any space between me and that car in front of me.” When I saw that James Shoffit was in front of me, a sense of relief came over me because I knew he had lots of experience with starts and I knew that if I stayed ON his bumper, he could “help” me through corner 1. It Worked! I think I actually passed a car, too! I was starting to feel the aggression within me and I had a great time dicing it up with James and a few other cars…still have a lot to learn on “closing the door” on those people wanting to pass me. Again, I finished the race CLEAN and I was ready for the second sprint race. The second sprint race was ready to begin and I was feeling hot and tired, but was ready to go do the best I could. My start was not as good as the last one, but the race was definitely on. You see, I believe there is a “little tiger” in all of us and I must say that I definitely found that tiger within me during this race. I would like to give a big Thank You to Marilynn Moseley for helping me pull out that tiger within! Grrrrr….

Marilynn and I hung with each other the entire race and even though we are not in the same class, I knew I would follow her every move and finally on the last lap of the race, I got around her and looked for that checker flag. I felt like Lewis Hamilton taking a victory lap around the track as I vigorously waved to each corner worker…this will be the closest I ever get to an F1 victory lap. Once again, I finished the race CLEAN. YAY!!! I was able to experience this absolutely wonderful weekend with the help and support of MANY people. I can never thank Christy Payne and Andrea Bell enough for taking over the Hospitality duties for the entire weekend so that I could go drive my first

Club Race. You girls are the BEST!!! My mentor Colin Graidage checked on me the entire weekend to make sure everything was going okay even when he was having some issues with his car. I could not have asked for a better mentor than you Mr. Colin! The support from every Club Racer and our very own Mavericks is so overwhelming that you just can’t help but smile and have a good time. Last, but never least, I have to give the biggest thanks to my incredibly wonderful husband. He supported me throughout the entire weekend with such positive encouragement and I never felt like I was driving “his car.” This was Us doing something that WE both enjoy doing together. I encourage All of the ladies out there to go take the most exhilarating ride you will ever take!

Member Spotlight: Scott Stubbs by Andrea Bell

T

his month’s spotlight is on Scott Stubbs. Scott is a new member with a 2002 Boxster S. He said, “It is a blast to drive and I get such a kick out of having an air conditioner that works while riding or driving a Porsche.” He added, “I have just been amazed at the handing of the Boxster - what a fine piece of craftsmanship and art. The lines of the car just pull you to it with such beauty.” Scott said his first ride in a Porsche was on the way to the hospital to be born. He has owned several 914’s in the late 80’s and 90’s and just loved them. However, with a growing family and no air conditioner, practicality took over and he sold his 914 in 1997.

Scott added that he grew up in the back seat of a 911. His dad, Fred Stubbs, has been a member of PCA since 1970, joining after one of his tours in Vietnam. Fred has held several positions in PCA over the years including President of the Carrera and West Texas regions and he currently serves as Vice President of the West Texas Region. Scott said one of his best memories in a Porsche was taking his dad’s 911 on a date in high school. He added, “The sweet young lady I took on that date… I am dating again 24 years later and she is still just as sweet!” Scott has lived in the DFW area since December, 1996 and has worked for Oncor since 1991. Scott shared that he has four wonderful kids. Emily graduates from High School in June. She currently works at Six Flags part time and will be starting college this fall. Ashlyn will be a sophomore in the fall. She loves to ice skate and has been skating and competing since 2004. Haley, Scott’s youngest daughter, will start 7th grade in the fall and enjoyed playing the violin in the 5th and 6th grade orchestra. Seth is Scott’s son and will be in 3rd grade this fall. He is just a ball of energy. Scott is looking forward to meeting some of the other members and is excited to be a member of PCA! We are pleased to have Scott and his family, join our Maverick family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT’ feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org.

Happy Hour at Abuelo’s by Chris Christensen

S

o, does everyone know what Abuelo translates to in English? Sure you do if you remember your High School Spanish. Heck I can’t even remember High School. Well it means Grandfather. What is unique about the word Abuelo’s – it has been Americanized with an apostrophe. With the apostrophe we don’t think it will translate back to Spanish very well. What is somewhat interesting about all of this; if you ever visit Montreal and especially Quebec, the apostrophe in the word McDonald’s has been removed. It wouldn’t be acceptable in the strict French language in that region of the world. Such is the way of languages, and mind you I am no linguist so corrections are always appreciated. A few highlights regarding Abuelo’s; the restaurant is very spacious and even has a separate room for special gatherings. Its Tex-Mex food is above average while pricing is moderate. The décor blends the unusual with the Traditional. Murals and an overall Spanish or Mediterranean motif lends to a South of the Border feel. And their Salsa should not go unnoticed, it is pretty darn good. One might say that Abuelo’s is to Mexican what P.F. Chang’s is to Chinese. They do a good job and with around 40 restaurants in 14 states it is a growing and very popular Texas-run chain. Lest we forget we would like to thank Bob and Clara Lewis for their dedication over the last two and a half years for organizing many Happy Hours. Happy Hour has been a good forum to catch up with your fellow Maverick discussing your car or various events conducted by our active club. Bob and Clara are not going away, of course, just changing the guard so we know, and hope to see them both at future Happy Hours. Thanks to you both! Some small snippets of information: We understand that Hope House is doing well and what our club set out to do for the children’s playground will be successful - Parade in 2011 has been moved to Savannah, Georgia. That should be a fantastic venue. Savannah is an absolutely beautiful city to visit – Many are chomping at the bit to speed-up the 24

clock so we get to St, Charles, Illinois, this year’s Parade venue ASAP. Thanks to Wendy Shoffit for organizeimg a pre-departure meeting at Spring Creek BBQ located at 315 State Hwy 114, Grapevine, Texas for June 22, 2010. It was fun for all in attendance. For future Happy Hour gatherings we are attempting to

organize venues at least six months in advance. At the time of writing, our next Happy Hour was held at the Wildwood

Grill located at 2700 E. Southlake Boulevard, Southlake, Texas on June 17, 2010. This location was previously known as the Southlake Tavern. Within days of a past Happy Hour held at this location, the restaurant was closed by the corporate owners. It is now owned and operated by a private individual and his wife who both live in Southlake. We hope everyone will try to make this new Happy Hour venue. We are attempting to spread out locations for all future Happy Hours – the July Happy Hour will be at Uncle Buck’s and the August venue will be held at the Trinity Pub in Dallas. From there we will move north into Plano and so on. We did receive some recommendations for restaurants and that is very much appreciated. We will work to support your requests. See you all at the next Happy Hour. See you all there!

Autocross #3 - “Autocross Newbie Advendure” By Brad Nesbit

T

he adrenaline is still pumping as I sit here recounting my first autocross event. My wife (Jen) and I joined the Porsche Club last October after purchasing a Boxster. We have been to a few socials and a DE. After talking to other members we decided that both of us should try driving in the May Autocross at Pennington Field. It was there that we had an amazing time, and I learned three things. First I learned that Jen can and will run me over given the opportunity. I mean this quite literally, mind you. After a run I left the car in gear with the parking brake off. I never leave the car in gear when I turn it off. So, as I am socializing on the sidewalk in front of my car Jen gets in to prepare for her turn and attempt to starts the car in gear. She proceeded to stomp the clutch as if it were the brake. The Boxster leaped up onto the curb and swept me Brad looks on as Jen tries to find a way to tell him it was really an accident! off my feet as it also demolished everything we had on the sidewalk, including my helmet. Everyone came over and helped us get off of the sidewalk while trying not to laugh as Jen sat in the car mortified. Fortunately the only real damage was a helmet with road rash and my wife’s dignity. Second I learned that everything about a Porsche is addicting. Every time you run a race, you want to run another. Every time you add something to your car to make it faster you look for something else to add more speed. Every time you meet new Porsche club members and fellow racers you cannot wait until the next time you get to do it again and share Mark gives son Michael Gohlke some tips on how to read the autocross map. more stories. 26

Photos by Charlie Davis Suddenly you feel as if one Porsche in the garage just isn’t enough. A whimsical purchase becomes an addiction. Lastly I learned that it really is “about the people.” While I originally believed it to just be a slogan, Jen and I have felt like old friends at every event. From the camaraderie to the friendly competition there is never a dull moment. We have found a passion both of us can enjoy and cannot wait until the June autocross. We will also be bringing our daughter and more friends to enjoy the adrenaline rush Jen shows us how to master the slalom and while trying to find fully recovered from the day’s excitement. a way to trim off just one more second!!

In Your Rear-view Mirror! Submitted by Jerry Defeo Dutch Porsche 911 Targa Why It’s Great Looking: I was unaware that anything would have “struck fear in the heart of everyone on the

Dutch motorways.” Apparently, I was mistaken. Seeing a bright red & blue 911 appear in your rearview mirror would be plenty scary. The Korps Landelijke Politiediensten (National Police Force) has an affinity for the 911 for several reasons, including its ability to be driven in reverse down long stretches of highway (thanks to its rear-engine layout) and the targa top, which makes it easy for a passenger police officer to stand up and direct traffic from inside the car. Photo credit: Police Vehicles

Found on Jalopnik.com German Landespolizei Porsche 911 Why It’s Great Looking: Even though they only have an additional 15 bhp under the hood (trunk), it’s the green

stripes that make the law-enforcement 911 faster. That, and the aero kit fitted to help with high speed directional stability. The green stripes, in addition to adding at least 10 hp, are bordered by reflective silver tape, which aids visibility on late night, high-speed chases. Photo credit: Super Police Cars

24 Hours of LeMons at Eagles Canyon Raceway by Carrie Carrera

Y

es, LeMons and, yes, at our own Eagles Canyon Raceway. The part that we won’t divulge are the names of all of the Maverick members who participated. But – you know who you are!!! Several local Porsche and BMW drivers joined a lot of ‘others’ - in over 50 creatively decorated cars, or at least the used to be carsfor a 2 day event. We got out there for the start – under the banner the driver’s meeting took place. The idea is low-cost racing, so they only are using a few flags- Green, Yellow, White and Red. Oh yea, and after way too many hours, the checkered flag. There was not qualifying – the official start time was 10 am. Cars were allowed on track starting at 9:45, and run under yellow. Then the green flag waves at no particular car to start the event.

And for those who don’t pay attention and have to serve a penalty after getting the black flag, the penalty box was setup near the new tech barn. The penalty box has a special seat for the “crappy driver.” What they lacked in speed, they made up for in creativity. At the time of printing, we aren’t sure who won the race, but the winner really doesn’t matter. As far as fun per mile and bang for the buck, they all won the day.

Since there wasn’t going to be a passing flag, some cars decided to provide their own instructions to fellow racers. Noteable entries – LeCar named for Pepe LePew, a furry black and white number whose tail waves up under braking – Got Skunk? The cars were nearly as fast in the pit lane as they were on track!! And if that didn’t smell bad enough, then we had the Not So Fresh Racing team –a pastel painted Bimmer with the primary sponsor of “Summer’s Eve.” The Nigerian Prince Racing team entered their Honda which is sponsored by Western Union Nigeria – with the slogan “Hey it’s not our money.” One team was proud of their carbon footprint and called themselves Gashole Motorsports. The car was disguised as a motorcycle – note the rear lights. You can hardly tell the difference!! There was one Porsche that we could find – at least I think it was. I think ‘WAS’ the operative word. The Chicken Pit entry had a great day about to overtake another competitor. The most aggressive entry had to be the Team Miagra car, which claims to “Race Harder and Last Longer.” 28
