Savannah here we come!
avannah here we come! That’s our cry as 29 Maverick Region cars head for Savannah, Georgia, to attend the 56th annual Porsche Parade (yours truly among them). Hopefully you’ve read one of the many articles here in Slipstream about all the fun events at a Porsche Parade, but I’m here to tell you “it’s not [just] the destination; it’s the journey!” Each of the previous two years we caravaned to the Porsche Parade (first in Keystone, CO, then in St. Charles, IL) with three other couples. How did we decide who we were going with? Only by meeting people at our Happy Hours who had similar interests and thoughts of going to Parade. Those thoughts turned into actions as we started to commit ourselves to going. One couple volunteered to have a planning meeting at their house and then each of the rest of us took roles: route selection, roadside hotel selections, printed calendar of events. By the time of our first planning meeting, we were well-organized and all we really had to do was select our activities at Parade and decide if we were going to take two or three days to get there (we compromised: three days going and two days coming home). Note: these discussions took place in January and February so we were all ready to select activities when registration opened in March. One of the things that worked out well for us was that we agreed to take three days to drive there. That meant we were only on the road for about five or six hours a day, which meant we could stop as often and wherever anyone wanted. This left plenty of time for sight-seeing and breaks. We visited the Valley of the Gods on our way to Colorado, and toured the Arch in St. Louis as examples of each of our trips. But the greatest outcome of all didn’t turn out to be the Porsche Parade or just the trip and tours. It was (and is) the true friendships that we developed with four other couples as a result of our now shared memories that will live with us forever. So if you see me and my wife, Chris, clustering at Happy Hours with three or four other couples, please understand: we’re just there reliving those great memories and friendships to which we will add at this year’s and many future Porsche Parades. 2
So once again our Alan Bambina is proven correct with his famous words: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the People!”
Mav of the Month: Our Mav of the month for June is our fabulous Autocross Chair: Tannia Dobbins. She continues to drive the program with new activities and locations, to meet the needs of our autocross enthusiasts and wanna-be’s. She was instrumental in finding a new location for our spring Autocross Academy at the Ball Park in Arlington, after Pennington Field in Bedford became unavailable. The “Get a Grip Autocross Academy” held in April was a blast! (if you couldn’t be there, read all about it in last month’s Slipstream on page 28). So for her leadership in getting a new location for our “Get a Grip Autocross Academy,” and for the work she does driving all the other Autocross events during the year, we award Mav of the Month and a gift certificate to the Silver Fox restaurant to Tannia!

and other essentials for the shelter throughout the year. The shelter calls us and we help them with the basic needs: paper towels, tissues, razors, shampoo, conditioner and more, and they leave a message asking “is this asking too much?”
The following is the mission statement of HOPE, Inc.: “HOPE exists to eliminate domestic violence through intervention, offering shelter, counseling, support, and education to promote the healing of abusive relationships.” It has proudly served the people of Palo Pinto, Parker, Erath and Hood counties since its conception in 1983. Hope is a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board and is staffed with trained professionals. Hope is a United Way member agency.
We help them out with things as simple as games to entertain the children while their mothers checkin. Clara Lewis continues to make beautiful travel bags filled with the essentials to make them feel better when they first arrive.
The Maverick members have been generous with cash donations and Wal-Mart Gift Cards for the holiday party
Oh, the things that we take for granted day in and day out. Please continue to give to this very appreciative charity through the donation can at Happy Hours, Wal-Mart gift cards and money for the holidays, and new/used clothing delivered by Chris Hamilton or Clara Lewis. It’s never too late to give with your heart to a worthy cause. If you’d like to donate at any time, please call Chris Hamilton at 817-421-7486.

s it really the middle of the year?!! It’s way too HOT!
Well, I’m proud to announce that my daughter, Amanda, will be working by my side this summer as our Slipstream Intern. I’m looking forward to seeing how she grows and develops our newsletter as we prepare for our 50th Anniversary. She has already attended several events and has been pleasantly surprised to find out that she really loves driving a Porsche. Of course, I knew she would! This is also the time to register for this year’s Parade if you have been planning on doing so. It promises to be a lot of fun and if you attend, I look forward to sharing your photos and experiences with the rest of the club, so take lots of pictures and write an article... PLEASE! To all the contributors of this and the many issues I have behind me, THANK YOU so much for sharing. Without your input, there’s no way Slipstream could be what it is today. You make the club what it is, so come out and get involved. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people...

Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao
O
ur June board meeting reviewed our recent and future regional events in 2011. We have been very fortunate to receive the ongoing support of you, our membership, as well as the volunteers and board chairs who contribute their energies to make these events happen. On behalf of the board officers, thank you very much. John Hamilton, our President, started the meeting at 7pm and summarized the positive reception to our recent events and thanked everyone for their participation. He described our ongoing relationship management activities with other PCA regions, local automobile dealers, and our membership at large. He then requested updates from the board. Madhu Rao, (full disclosure that’s me), described an initiative to survey the entire Maverick Region membership (that’s you) to gain your feedback on our regional operations and obtain your suggestions for improvement. He reviewed the survey goals and format (electronic, 2 pages). He then described the steps to field the survey to the entire region. One such step is a pre-survey email communication you will receive from John Hamilton describing the intent of the survey. Your feedback is extremely important and will help ensure we are delivering a great membership experience for you. On behalf of the board, thank you for your participation. Madhu also described the upcoming Maverick Region 2012 officer elections. The process steps and timeline will be presented at the July 6th board meeting. Thereafter, an election committee will be established to manage the nomination process. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the election committee or any of the current officers. Carey Spreen, our May Maverick of the Month, described the very successful Saturday rally which was held in May. Twenty rally participants drove all over north Texas and ended up at Rancho Sereno, on time. How is that for a successful event! He acknowledged the contributions of Linda Bambina and John/BJ Harvey in this regard. Travis Howard updated the board about the May 21-22 AX/ TT at Mineral Wells. He recognized Wendy Shoffit, who at the last moment, volunteered onsite to help out. He noted that an opportunity exists for more instructors to help the students at the AX/TT events. If this sounds like something you would be interested in please contact Travis at tt@ mavpca.org or Tannia Dobbins at ax@mavpca.org. The board brainstormed about holding specialty AX/TT events (e.g., ladies only, Sunday Drive Tours). Full disclosure: I was caught up in the moment and may even dip my ‘heel 8
and toe’ into this event. Watch out cones, here I come! Robyn Howard noted that a swap meet is planned for October 1. These are great opportunities to get stuff for your Porsche! Stay tuned for more details. Ed Mullenix discussed holding a Tech Session in late Q3 or Q4, 2011. These are great opportunities to learn more about your Porsche! Stay tuned for details. Fresh from a well-deserved vacation (after tax season) our treasurer, Jim Falgout, reported that our financial condition continues to be healthy. Mike Brodigan noted that we are halfway through Drivers’ Education season. He noted that attendance was strong at the May Drivers’ Education event with over 100 participants (drivers, volunteers, and instructors). Mike also noted that reception to the 2011 Drivers’ Education incentive continues to be positive. Yellow level drivers receive a 1 free event after 4 and white level receives 1 free event after 3 events. If you have an interest in Drivers’ Education events or just want to volunteer as an instructor or helper please contact Mike at DE@mavpca.org. Wendy Shoffit noted that the Maverick Region directories have been printed. You can order a copy for $5 at www. clubregistration.net. As expected, the Concours team presented a ‘detailed’ update. Frank Briggs noted that the May at Mayo’s Concours event was very successful with over 80 members and guests. Jack Griffin also described the upcoming Autos in the Park event at the Cooper Clinic on June 5th. Good luck to all who enter. Here’s hoping that we Mavericks earn a ‘clean’ sweep of all medals. Don’t you think my word choice above is very punny? Pat Friend said he really enjoyed the May Saturday drive in his new 996. He brought several new Maverick Region badges to the meeting. Lisa Steele will be distributing these to our members along with some related membership information. Chris Christensen noted that recent Happy Hours continue to be well attended and the new format involving several couples hosting/coordinating these events is working well. If you have an interest in hosting/coordinating a Happy Hour please contact Chris at vp@mavpca.org. Mike Ferrar has been enthusiastically attending our board meetings and volunteering at various events since November 2010. Thanks Mike! On behalf of the board, we always welcome your interest in volunteering on behalf of our region. Please let any board member know your interests and they’ll take it from there.
June 1, 2011 Christy Payne noted the success of the recent Concours event at Mayo Performance Center in Euless. Twenty-six cars entered the Concours event. She also confirmed that the Margaritas were excellent (as always). She then described the upcoming Father’s Day event at Speed Zone in Dallas. Lastly, she noted that the Maverick Region 50th Anniversary committee will be meeting in early June. FRIENDLY REMINDER - The kick-off for the 50th Maverick Region Anniversary celebration will occur at Founders’ Day on November 11. Please consider yourself invited! Stay tuned for details. Lisa Steele reviewed our recent membership trends which continue to be favorable. She discussed initiatives to recruit new members and grow our current membership base. If you know someone who wants to join the Maverick Region please contact Lisa at membership@mavpca.org. We always welcome your referrals of new members into our region. John Harvey recapped the recent May Saturday driving tour. A total of 89 people participated in the drive. He noted that there were several new attendees and that one couple drove all the way from Ohio just to join us at this event. He updated everyone on some potential drive locations for the September time frame. Stay tuned for details on these. Richard Bradley is the managing editor of Slipstream. Richard and Pat Friend acknowledged the support of our advertising sponsors and discussed some new tactics to recognize this group. Maverick Moments. Our Maverick of the Month is Tannia Dobbins. She is a real trooper and has a multi-hour commute to our AX/TT events in the DFW metroplex. She and the volunteer team at these events are always willing to go the ‘extra mile’ for you. Congratulations Tannia! You deserve it! Meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.

Autos in the Park By Linda Bambina

unday, June 5th was hot-hot-hot, but 23 Porsches looked oh-so-cool under the canopy of huge oaks at the Cooper Institute in Dallas. Thanks to Jack Griffin (for our primo location), Frank Briggs (our Concoursmeister), and Pat Friend (our Boardwalk Prizes procurer extraordinaire), it was an extremely successful occasion. This is the 6th year for the Cooper Aerobics Institute to sponsor this charitable (Texas Scottish Rite Hospital) event,

and the Maverick Region has supported it with growing enthusiasm. Hoping to get brand new members and make connections with members who rarely participate in Mavscheduled activities, yours truly visited with many, many folks who were cruising thru the vast displays of historic vehicles, foreign and domestic, as well as Garage Queens and road racers of many marques. I met a current new member who was attending his very first event. While only 31, he has had “a good year”…and so was the owner of two amazing Porsches: 2009 Cayman GTS AND a newly acquired ’07 GT3 RS! Steve Harrison: we need to see more of you! I also met another “big kid”…Brian Bell. No, not our Bryan Bell. This

other fellow works for Boardwalk and has some “magic fingers” in the mechanical realm. Now if he can just find the right First Porsche, he’ll join in a millisecond! Speaking again of Boardwalk, a huge Thank You goes out to them for Grand Prizes all-‘round for our Winners: Best of Show: Mike Harling ’58 356 Speedster; Rich O’Day -914; Steve Cole and Alan Bambina-tied for 964 class; Bob Aines-911; Michael Sherman -997; & Tom and Susan Froehlich-with the Boxster that he bought at last year’s RoundUp!

Father’s Day at SpeedZone By Amanda Bradley
F
irst off, I would like to introduce myself. I’m Amanda Bradley, the summer intern for Slipstream, and Slipstream’s editor, Richard Bradley’s, daughter. I am a senior at Oklahoma State University majoring in communications. I have never really taken an interest in the PCA before, but have very much enjoyed my part in it the last month from board meetings and car shows to time trials and the Father’s Day event at SpeedZone, as well as getting to know many of the members at each event. After spending a week learning to drive a stick and going through my first Time Trial, I was ready to kick butt (most importantly my brother’s) at SpeedZone. Though driving go-karts around a little track is nothing compared to Time Trials and Autocrosses, it was a ton of fun for everyone

involved. Mike Brodigan and I had a competition going on throughout the day and I’m proud to say I beat him! He blamed it on a weight advantage, but I like to think my Time Trial skills paid off (thank you Tannia Dobbins for teaching me!) I am looking forward to the next Time Trial event in September so I can practice more. The highlight of my day at SpeedZone was my sibling rivalry. My little brother, Ethan, did not want to let me pass him, but I did, and it caused him to spin out. It was a glorious moment for a competitive older sister! Those who attended enjoyed a nice “tail gate style” lunch that included burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, cookies, and refreshing lemonade and cokes. We all took part in the races on the tracks, and some of us even played the arcade games. It was a fun way to unleash our competitive driving and still have good old-fashioned fun. SpeedZone was a lot of fun for everyone who attended, but let’s not forget the reason we were there – Father’s Day. For all the fathers in the PCA, thank you for being a part of our lives and loving us through everything, even scratched cars. It means the world to us.
Roger and Thomas Briggs share a good father/son afternoon...
Come out and enjoy the fun!

worked at a Porsche dealer in Boulder, Colorado, from 1974 to 1983. I worked at three more here in the DFW area until I found a home where I am at now. At each one, really weird events occurred that were very unexpected.
In Boulder, we once had a car disappear. I came to work in the a.m. and it was missing from inside the workshop where it had been parked. It was a near new 911SC. Ultimately, we found that thieves had expertly cut out a window in the overhead door, crawled inside, cut off the lock and opened the door. Then swept up dust from sawing on the door and put the window back in place. Thus night patrol security saw nothing unusual when they cruised by. The car was never recovered. Here in the DFW area we once had a customer come in looking at new 944’s. The salesman took him for a drive. While testing the car, the prospective buyer pulls a gun, and handcuffs the salesman to the steering wheel and says “Drive where I tell you to go.” They cruise out Loop 820 on the west side of town. The sales guy is told, “Pull over on the shoulder, yer time is up.” Next, his handcuffs are removed and he is told to get out. He gets out and the thief moves towards the front of the car. The salesman takes off running behind the car and jumps off the siding and rolls down the embankment. The thief drives away. I saw the poor sales associate when he came into the dealership after it happened. Poor guy was really shaken up. Police reported that a motorcycle officer performing radar on 820 watched a white Porsche go by him at over 120 mph and decided to not give chase, as the speed was too dangerous. The car was never recovered. At the same dealer we once had a car stolen from the lot (I cannot remember now how they got the keys), and it was recovered. Burned to a crisp. The only 944 I’ve personally seen that completely burned. It was amazing. When they stole the car, they simply drove it through our chain link fence gates by ramming them open. I don’t know what they accomplished other than maybe a joy ride. Then they set it on fire and completely destroyed it. Once we had a brand new 930 stolen. It was found on the side of I-30 around the Arlington area on the shoulder (intact and unharmed), with the thief sleeping behind the wheel. A set of blueprints of our dealership was found in the back seat area. Very odd. I was never given information as to what was found out from that point going forward. At another dealer in Fort Worth, a guy ran into our detail bay and stole a near new Honda loan car. The detail guy ran in and explained what had happened. The car was recovered 14
Weird Things That Happen with a person shot to death in the passenger seat the next day. A couple years ago, my dealer (which has alarm systems, cameras monitoring the lot, and police cruisers coming by during the night), had the wheels stolen from a near new GT3. We found the car sitting with one side jacked up and one side lying on the ground, wheels gone. We now take an extra measure of packing our shop each night with any car that has special wheels etc. The wheels were never recovered, the thieves never caught. Once (a couple of decades ago), we had a new 911 come in from factory that a person had special ordered to their liking. It was sent to valet to fuel the car before delivery to the excited owner. Valet did not return. Later we get a call that the car had gone over a fence at about 100 miles an hour and basically flipped front over rear multiple times (end over end). It was totaled. The valet decided to joy ride apparently. The 20 something year old valet walked away unharmed. Poor guy waiting to take delivery of his new Porsche ordered another one with some special compensation for any additional features he wanted. I was driving a Carrera GT one day a very short distance. As I approached the intersection of Plano Parkway and the North/South Tollway, the light was green. I was in the right hand lane going east and one block from the dealer going 35 mph. A car going north on the access road gets to the intersection and decides to stick their nose into my lane approximately 30 feet in front of me. Fortunately for me no one was in the lane next to me and I avoided collision. I nearly became one of the stories I do not want to be a part of when it comes to dealer/workshop bad happenings. Trying to not early apex in life.

Red River Rally By Jerry Sutton
G
osh, I haven’t written a Slipstream article in over two decades. At least I don’t remember writing any during that time. So maybe it’s my turn again. Here goes...
The objective of the rally was to find signs with partial quotes on the answer sheet and fill in the missing words. There were fifteen such signs that we encountered in the order listed along the route. In addition we were to look for cemeteries (or signs indicating cemeteries) from the end of the odometer When I saw the announcement for the Red River Derby check leg to the end of the numbered route instructions; Tour and Gimmick Rally I marked it for follow-up. Myra there turned out to be six of these. In the end it was one noticed the announcement in her own email and told me of these that caused us to take third place instead of first she wanted to participate in the tour. So I sent our Tour Carey tells me Meister an email. I was in the sign was trouble when Myra said edge on at a T we should do the rally intersection. instead of the tour in order After arriving to practice for Parade. at the tour/rally We intended to get destination an early start towards “ R a n c h o McKinney on May 14th, Sereno” in but our intentions to start Whitesboro early failed, ... something we turned in to do with aging I guess. our answer We got to the Westgate sheets to Carey. Shopping Center parking After dinner lot in time. We were we learned delighted to see a sea of the following and the winner is... Porsches; we had 46 cars trophy results: total for the tour and rally. Place - Driver/Navigator - #Correct - Mileage Error At the end of the day twenty cars were scored in the rally. I understand twenty cars started the rally ... Yay, we didn’t First: - George Luxbacher/Ethan Strong - 21 - 0.29 lose a one! Second: - Gary White/Vanessa White - 21 - 1.20 Carey had prepared a gimmick rally with a small taste of a TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally thrown in. Other than an overall minimum/maximum time limit, time and speed were not a part of scoring and deviation from the ideal distance was used only as a tiebreaker. The instructions Carey provided were written in the style of a full-scale TSD event: General instructions with a supplemental glossary for “ONTO” and “LINED ROAD”, route following priorities, valid and invalid rally road definitions, and so forth; numbered route instructions utilizing the PCR (Parade Competition Rules) Rally Glossary (which was included in our event packet) along with the supplemental glossary terms. We were following route instructions without any specified speed, elapsed time, or elapsed distance (which would be specified for a TSD type event). Carey provided instructions designed to not trick us into being off course, when most rally instructors would do the opposite. The spirit of PCR’s requires rally masters to “loop” such “traps” so that inexperienced rallyists are automatically brought back onto the course, but their score will be penalized in that their arrival time at the next checkpoint will be off. Carey followed this guideline as several people went off course. 16
Third: - Myra Sutton/Jerry Sutton - 20 - 0.09 Oh, hey, that’s us. Too bad we were not off another .02 mile. If we had been, Mike and Emily De Jong would have taken third and I would not have to find room for yet another pair of PCA trophies. A special thanks to our hosts, former Maverick Region members and Rancho Sereno owners, Mike & Lisa Maberry, for welcoming an abundance of Maverick folks with a great barbecue dinner. A very deserving hand especially goes out to John & B J (Tour Meisters) Harvey, Carey Spreen (Rally Meister), along with their helpers; Brendan Eagan, Mahdu Rao, Dee Luxbacher, Linda Bambina and Jasmine Shoffit for putting together a fun filled day and a good excuse to drive our Porsches and be with friends. Hopefully, none of you will read this all the way through, especially not potential employers. In keeping with my desire to maintain a very low social media profile, any future articles I write will require use of a pseudonym.

Rennsport Reunion IV Update
Michelin joins PCA as spec tire manufacturer for the Rennsport Reunion Cup Race
P
orsche Rennsport Reunion IV will be the world’s greatest gathering of Porsche race cars and the drivers that drove them to victory, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from October 14 to 16, 2011. Hosted by Porsche Cars North America, it will assemble the wide variety of Porsche’s most historic racing models from the nimble 550 Spyder of the mid-fifties through the mighty 917 and 956/962 of the seventies and eighties to the highly successful RS Spyder of the last decade. Special tribute will be paid to the numerous racing versions of the Porsche 911 and their countless victories on the dawn of what will become another milestone of this iconic sports car. The Porsche Club of America is honored to assist the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV with several activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display, Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that exciting contest. We are looking for exceptional examples of Porsche 911 production models for the History of the Porsche 911 Display at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the event. It will be a display representing the 911 model throughout its generational life. Please contact Tom Provasi for information and registration at tprovasi@netgate.net or 408/947-0980. PCA members will be invited to use a terrific PCA Hospitality and Membership Center that will be open for all days of the event, October 14-16, to park safely in one of the Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals (a corral parking ticket will be required— please visit www.mazdaraceway.com for ticket information), and
to enjoy Parade laps of the track with their Porsches. We will need PCA volunteer workers to assist with our activities at the Rennsport Reunion IV. If you are interested in supporting this memorable event, please contact Sharon Neidel with the PCA Volunteer Pool at sharonneidel@yahoo.com or 650/508-1308. We will have a very special event memento for the volunteer workers. Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and Porsche Race Car Classic (PRCC) have announced that the organizations have coordinated their event activities to allow all Porsche enthusiasts to take full advantage of what will be an unprecedented celebration of Porsche’s rich motorsport history around the Monterey Peninsula over the third weekend in October. The early run groups (1 and 2) of Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV will conclude their racing activities at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, October 15, so that they may fully participate in the PRCC activities at Quail Lodge on the following day upon invitation. The Porsche Race Car Classic, a gathering of significant race cars from Porsche’s break-out era of 1950-1965, will take place on Sunday, October 16, at the Quail Lodge in Carmel. Event producer Steve Heinrichs is pulling out all the stops to bring rarelyseen race cars out of private collections and museums and into the light of day on the grassy fields at Quail. While the cars are by invitation, the event itself is open to the general public. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.porscheracecarclassic.com or contact Mr. Heinrichs at 775/691-2217. H a
Time Trial People Are All Winners! By Mitch Williams
H
ave you ever been to a Maverick Time Trial event? How about a Maverick Autocross? If you have been a regular attendee, then what I would like to share will be familiar. If not, then read on and see some of what you’ve been missing. Time Trial #4 took place on a hot Texas June day at Mineral Wells Airpark. We don’t run during July and August to avoid the heat. June is normally cooler than it was last June 11. But those of us addicted to driving our cars at the limit will put up with a lot to get more seat time. And you get LOTS of seat time at a Maverick event. If you have a Porsche, you should really enjoy these events…considering you have a car DESIGNED for just such fun. You can learn more about just how well designed your car is for handling. Even though our turn-out was low, our leader, Travis, managed to run the event and make it a very good one. I believe everyone had a great time. Our Slipstream Editor Richard Bradley’s young daughter, Amanda, got her feet wet in her first driving event. It was great to see her start very slow, but steadily improve to where she looked like she was driving pretty good at the end. Being in Daddy’s great Boxster helped a lot, I’m sure. Mike Lockas was back after getting his transaxle fixed…and turning great times. Chuck McCoy did well, as did Travis and Robyn Howard, Tannia Dobbins, Richard Diller, and quite a few other regulars. But the big story is that Ray Kelly in his red
26
1985 911 Carrera saved the day. There was a Lotus at this event. Now when you take a slot-car and a very talented driver named Nathan, you get some very fast times. Ray concentrated on his driving and got Top Time of the Day in his last run set. The Lotus is going to do some suspension work and be back…so the battle will continue. I hope everyone can come out and cheer Ray on to victory again. This shows you one of the best parts of the Time Trial and Autocross events: diversity. Yes, there are non-Porsches out there. Some of them are very fast. All of their drivers are great people just like any other Maverick Region member. I enjoy my Mav friends and the new friends I meet at every event. It is a mini-social event. Everyone catches up on what the others have been doing. Like a happy hour in the sunshine around a lot of beautiful cars. Anyone new coming out, just strike up a conversation and see what I mean. Sometimes, you almost forget you came out there to drive. Find someone else with a model like yours and find out what they’ve done and how they drive their beautiful machine to the limit. I had the opportunity at this event to relearn a couple of things that I learned long ago. Let me share them with you. First I have a fresh engine in my car and it’s creating about 60 hp less than the previous engine. So, I relearned to concentrate on carrying as much speed as possible through the corners. I also was downshifting more and really using
a lot of rpm. Another club member riding with me thought it sounded like I had a “lot of bumble-bees” under the hood. Well, I could easily hear why he thought so, but I had a blast until the very last session…but even then had a good experience. I’ll explain in a minute. Secondly, I rode with a new attendee Oleg Perelet, to help him learn the course. I knew very well I should check his car out before hand, but was in too big a hurry to get in his car so we could run. I got in his car and settled in the nice aftermarket seats and remarked about them. He said he got them to keep the factory seats looking new. Good move I thought. I asked what year 911 and which engine it had. I heard 2.6L. I asked what tires, he told me street tires by Kumho. Ok, being new to our events I thought we would do fine. As he got more and more familiar with the course, and I encouraged him to go faster, I noticed that the car was pulling really well. I asked if there were any engine mods… no, it was stock. When he entered a corner too fast once I remarked “too hot” to slow him down, but the car turned beautifully (but of course, it IS a Porsche). I was getting more puzzled. So when I was outside his car, I looked at the tires. They were the max summer tires Kumho Estra XS (think XS = extreme stick). These tires are one of the front runners for true street tire competition with SCCA (STS class). They are one of the better ones because they can tolerate track days very well. Very good choice on his part. Then I walked around back and saw “Carrera 2”. DUH! I misheard…it was a 3.6 not a 2.6…that explained a lot. So I relearned to look over the car before getting into it so I
would know what to expect. I later learned that Oleg used to have a BMW 2002 and had some driving experience. It was good to see him now in the “right” German car. The third lesson was an easy one that I’ve experienced many, many times. This group is the greatest bunch of people out there. Helpful is not enough to describe them. Passionate to help each other is closer. I had a heater hose burned by an EGR pipe, and lost most of my coolant (yes, it’s a water-pumper.) So immediately Oleg offered to take me into town to an auto parts store. There he bombarded me with options for repair when they didn’t have the special pre-formed hose I needed. We left with two good fixit possibilities…the one I used I probably wouldn’t have thought of on my own. Once we were back, I had a crowd gathered around my car. As I started to work, I heard “let me get my tools.” A minute later I had FOUR tool boxes on the ground in front of the car…all more complete than the tiny box I had brought. Long story short, with the help of the PEOPLE at these events, I had a repair done in very short order and was able to drive home. So as I see almost every event, the people at these events are passionate to help others out. They are a clear example of a motto-like saying I’ve heard ever since I joined our club in 1999: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” There won’t be another Time Trial or Autocross event until September 10 and 11th. But take my advice, and mark your calendars and plan to come out to Mineral Wells and see your new friends, and have a great time in your car. My favorite saying on the driving experience is that it is, “the most fun you can have with your clothes on”. Hope to see you there.

The “Other” Driver... By Pat Silva
S
o, you enjoyed Wendy Shoffit’s article last month about bringing your spouse or “Other” to a Maverick driving event, and you’ve decided to give it a try? Here’s a brief rundown of what it’s like to plan, pack, prepare for and participate in a couple of events - an Autocross/ Time Trials weekend and a Drivers’ Ed weekend -- with the person you love the most, sharing the car you love the most. First and most importantly, remember whose idea/fault the whole thing is. If the Other is doing it grudgingly, it’s because it’s the only way they get to spend time with you on weekends, and you are very grateful that they are being such a good sport. If the Other is excited about it, you can’t believe how lucky you are to have such a supportive and understanding and fun-loving Other. Next, you need to pick the event, the weekend, and ensure that each of you signs up separately. We thought -- oops -- Al thought -- it might be a good idea to try a Time Trial/ Autocross event, minimizing potential damage to the vehicle and the relationship. Tannia Dobbins, Lisa Steele and Wendy Shoffit had been working on me to attend one of these, with assurances that no experience was necessary, and that we would have expert instruction available. That’s all we needed to hear.
Logistics follow - do you drive back and forth each day and night, get a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights at the Ritz Carlton - Mineral Wells, or take your chances on Hotels.com. We chose the Best Western, which turned out to be a clean and convenient choice. And then there’s packing for two -- overnight bags, folding chairs, sunscreen, cooler, laptop (in case someone thinks they’re going to get any work done during the weekend) and the car stuff, which depending on your level of dedication, you might be able to stuff into your Porsche, or you can go nuts and bring a trailer filled with tools and racing tires. Saturday morning we arrive, and after HMIC (Head Mavericks In Charge) determines how many people we have and who’s driving vs. working corners, things get underway. As I had a slightly (only very slightly) better time by the end of the day, I was assured of not losing my standing to a rookie (after all, I just got promoted to Drivers’ Ed Blue), and we thoroughly enjoyed the great company of Robyn and Travis Howard, and our two incredible and patient instructors, Mike and Ray, at dinner. It was awesome, and a real highlight of the weekend. Sunday was a different story. Seems like the Other has chops, and a fast learning curve. Al proceeded to “get” autocross and started turning in some pretty respectable times (read: better than mine). I had to think quickly to try to regain some standing, so the best I could do was to hand him the keys just before his run and tell him I thought we might be a touch low on gas. Unfortunately, the gambit failed, and he bested my times again. Should this happen to you, you must prepare to hear a play-by-play of each run during the long drive home, as well as thoughtful suggestions on where you might be able to pick up a few seconds the next time. Still being together by Sunday evening, we considered the weekend a success, and stepped up to a Drivers’ Ed event at Eagles Canyon in May. This was Al’s first DE, which put him in Green group, meaning that we could still share the same (my) car. You will need a tech inspection (one tech inspection will cover both drivers). Be sure to let the mechanic know that there will be two people driving the car in the current weather conditions at high speeds; you want to be sure all of your fluids, tires, and parts are up to the task. What you will not be able to share is the car same number, so try to get assigned numbers that are one digit off or have some other easy way to switch back and forth quickly between run groups. If you have any questions, I’m sure Joel Nannis would be happy to enlighten you. He will also point out that even though it’s close to 100 degrees, your feeble attempt at using painter’s tape and melting plastic numbers will not cut it.
28
It’s up to you and your Other if you want to share the same helmet; if you’re ok with sharing toothbrushes, you probably won’t mind. During the drivers’ meeting the first morning, you’ll get the run group schedule. Make sure to confirm where the car will be parked between runs. You’ll both be busy attending class and trying to switch out numbers, checking tire pressures and keeping hydrated, and before you know it, your run group is up again. Here are a couple of tips we learned the hard way: 1) make sure each of you has a separate car key -- it’s easy to pocket it and walk far away, causing mild panic if your Other’s run group has been called to the grid and there’s only one key between the two of you. 2) Check your gas gauge after each run. You’ll go through fuel like bottled water, and filling up a bit more frequently is better than trying to calculate whether you have enough petrol to finish your run while a couple of GT3’s are grinning in your rearview mirror.
run group was pretty polite, which made learning the track less stressful. He was soon able to focus on the driving, and came back from each run with more information about speed, braking, apexes, turning, etc. A natural talker, I knew he would be fine after I saw him connecting with other drivers, instructors and HMICs; he was experiencing what makes these DEs so much fun for me. Given the run group schedules, we didn’t get a lot of time together during the day, but bringing a split of Champagne in that cooler ensures a pleasant debrief in the late afternoon. Dinner with new and old friends is always something to look forward to. On the ride home we had plenty to discuss, but most important was which car he’s thinking of driving if he gets promoted to Blue anytime soon.
And now for the fun stuff: the driving and the people. Al’s
