What does it mean to be a lead Porsche service department? In our service department, we have always strived to be the best. In 2005, Porsche came to us and asked us to start sending in reports to a group of engineers and tasked us with looking for any area of vehicle development that could be improved. We are currently 1 of 18 dealers in North America that they have chosen to ask for this help. It is an honor we simply accepted. Since that time we have strived to always report accurately and have received great feedback from engineering. Our feedback to Porsche has given us an opportunity to be at the doorstep of their leading edge technology. We were chosen by Porsche to take on the task of spending our time examining our repairs then forwarding exactly what we saw, how we diagnosed it and how we resolved it. It is an honor to be recognized by one of the foremost automotive engineering companies on the planet in this way. When you bring your Porsche in to us it will be examined in a very special way. It is what we were doing before Porsche asked us for our help in improving their cars. Now we simply record and pass on what we do.
Proven performance in the workshop or at the track. It is our passion.

Drifting: “Great Performance” By John Hamilton, President
H
ow many different ways can we take the meaning of those two words? At a concert when the musicians are exceptional? About our cars after they’ve had a tune-up? About our volunteers when they’ve collaborated to deliver exceptional fun and entertainment for the rest of us thanks to their extra-efforts? Our first half of the year has been spectacular in all regards. Our region’s 50th anniversary celebration continues with more events ahead, and the events so far have been incredible! Fifty Cars for Fifty Years has been immortalized in a poster, available for purchase at our Goodie Store at mav.pca. org. And the concours and party at Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s was a blast. The new one-day D.E. was an outstanding success with more compliments than I’ve heard in a long time! The Sunday drives have had record turn-outs (50plus cars!?!) and the tour to an Autocross introduced that event to many for the first time. Membership has hit a new high (now almost 2,200 members in D/FW!) with many new members coming to the Happy Hours for their first event. Whew! That’s a lot going on! Although we’ll appear to slow down in the hot summer months of July and August, we’ll just be getting ready for September when things pick back up again. And our Happy Hours will continue over the summer, so please do drop in!

Many of us will be caravanning to Salt Lake City for this year’s annual Porsche Parade. What an event! Each year, over 700 Porsches from around the country (yes, we always see cars from Alaska, too!) convene at a resort somewhere in the U.S. to celebrate our passion. Half the fun of the event is the drive there! So while we used to think “Oh no! That’s a long drive,” now we think “Oh yes! That’s a long drive!” We’ll begin our 3-day trek on Friday, July 6th and arrive in Salt Lake City around noon on Sunday. It’ll be a great vacation that I hope you, too will try some year in the near future, if you haven’t already attended. It’s fun to get together on an adventure with all those Porschephiles, and we get to drive our cars! We’ll bring back a report and start sharing with you at our July Happy Hour and in upcoming Slipstream magazines.
Mav of the Month There were two more events that occurred recently that need to be noted: “Autos in the Park,” a car show and concours held annually at the Cooper Aerobic Center; and our May “Detailing Your Car” Tech Session. Our Concours co-chair, Jack Griffin, was the
person responsible for driving both these great events. Jack even hosted the Tech Session at his home! So Jack, for all you do for our club, this little recognition only begins to say “thanks”. Thank you, and enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox Steakhouse. You deserve it!

s noted in other articles in this month’s issue, July and August are slow months for Maverick Region as far as driving events are concerned. A large contingent of us make the annual trek to the Porsche Parade in early July, so many of the folks that run our events are out of town during that time. We have also learned over the years that if we do try to schedule any outdoor events in July and August, the turnout is below average, not only because of the heat, but because this time of year is vacation time for those of us with kids in school. So
our July and August calendars typically don’t look very busy compared to the rest of the year. But that’s not to say that there are no Maverick events going on. Our monthly Lunch series are still active, and now we have a new addition for those of you who wanted to attend one of our Lunches but were too far east: introducing the Richardson Lunch, held on the fourth Thursday of the month, at Spring Creek Barbecue, 270 N. Central Expressway in Richardson. See the notice on page 21 for details. This event coincides with the Southlake Lunches held at Kincaid’s, which has recently been taking longer to get to due to the ongoing construction on SH 114. Both of these Lunch events are held at the same time, so if one is
too far away, hopefully the other one is close enough for you to attend. And of course the Lewisville Lunches, at the Lewisville Spring Creek Barbecue location, will continue meeting on the second Tuesday of each month. And don’t forget our evening Happy Hours, which take place on the third Thursday of each month. These informal get-togethers are all great ways to meet fellow Maverick Region members and find out what the club is all about. I would also like to welcome our newest advertiser, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. And as always, if you use the products or services of our advertisers, please tell them that you saw their ad in Slipstream. Read on!

Maverick Minutes By Madhu Rao, Secretary
O
ur May meeting started at 7:05pm. President John Hamilton welcomed the group and our four guests, Bruce McQuaid, Renee Farinella, and Rick and Rebecca Robinson. First up, here are our membership numbers for April and May. These are 2122 and 2147, respectively. I promised Lisa Steele I’d include both months. I know that she and the membership committee have worked very hard to attract new members and increase our membership renewals. The results speak for themselves as our total membership has grown every month since April 2011. Congratulations to you all on a job well done. Travis Howard followed with a discussion of the most recent Autocross event at Mineral Wells. The turnout was great and those of us who did the Sunday Drive on May 27 got to drive the course and learned more about Autocross. Equally as important, I finally got to see the world famous “Truckster” in action. Words cannot describe the Truckster so I’ll invite you to see for yourself at the next Autocross event. Robyn Howard mentioned that the June 2nd Drivers’ Education (DE) event was very successful. Note to self: Make sure to wave to Robyn if you see her working a corner at a DE event. “No wave, no save.” Christy Payne noted that the May at Mayo’s event was fun and profitable to the region. (Do you think it was the world famous margaritas or the Porsches?) Thanks to Ed Mayo, Tom Petrushka, and all of the organizing staff 8
for a great event. The margaritas and the cars were awesome! Christy also said that raffle ticket sales are strong. More information about the raffle, a week-long trip to Germany for two, is available elsewhere in Slipstream and online. Lastly, Christy mentioned that the location for the Southlake monthly luncheon might have to change to another location in the metroplex due to State Highway 114 construction traffic around Southlake. Linda Bambina mentioned that she had a great time leading the sing-along at May at Mayo’s, and also thanked the organizing committee and the margaritas. The Goodie Store is now selling 18 x 24 art print and 20 x 30 poster versions of our 50th anniversary photoshoot taken at Texas Motor Speedway in April. Stay tuned for a story and photo in Panorama describing this event. Lastly, she described the upcoming Father’s Day picnic at the home of Doris and Dave Casey in Copper Canyon, TX. Photos will be forthcoming regarding the Costume Concours event! Luke Edson reported that the DE equipment is working well. Jim Falgout indicated that our financial position continues to improve with the success and profitability of our regional events. Ed Mullenix noted that a tech session is being planned for later this fall. The subject is about how to care for your convertible top. Jack Griffin reported the success of the May at Mayo’s event as well as the Autos in the Park event at Cooper Clinic on June 3. My wife and I both went to the latter and really enjoyed all of the great cars there. Jack also mentioned the May tech session with Andy Kay. For-
June 6, 2012 tunately I had the opportunity to “drop by” Jack’s Garage for this tech session. First of all, Jack has a garage second to none. Secondly, you should have seen all of the Porsches lining the streets of his neighborhood. That was one for the history books! Great job, Andy and Jack, for a great event. Brendan Eagan was next and noted that 22 cars participated in the May Sunday Drive. This featured an awesome route out west to Mineral Wells and an Introduction to Autocross event as the finale to the drive. John Harvey described the June Sunday drive to Echo Springs Blueberry Farm on June 24 in East Texas. I drove parts of that route last year and enjoyed that drive immensely. Kudos to Brendan Eagan, Gareth Maurice, and John and BJ Harvey who have worked hard to create great Sunday Drive experiences for you. Carey Spreen noted that the Slipstream magazines are being delivered earlier in the month now. If you would like to contribute an article or photo please contact Carey at editor@mavpca.org. Bruce McQuaid said he enjoyed attending the meetings and is looking forward to helping out. Thirty minutes later he made good on that promise. Keep reading to find out how! Renee Farinella indicated that she is working on an article about the Autos in the Park event. Given her lexigraphic command of the English language, that’ll be some good reading. I make no claims to my grammatical skills, sentence flow, and diction… Rick and Rebecca Robinson described their recent experience
as Maverick Region events. They appreciated the high level of volunteerism that goes into each event. As newer members, they asked some great questions about our outreach programs to increase new membership. We all learned a lot from the extended conversation and came away re-energized to deliver a great experience for all of you, our Maverick Region members. Driving right along (one of my favorite clichĂŠs in this process), Lori Mauthe described the success of our recent one-day DE event. The event was profitable and a good time was had by all. Lori reported that members of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters team were on hand to learn more about DEs and participate in some well-deserved charity laps. Lots of smiles adorned the faces of our guests and drivers.
Lori reminded us that our region is in need of DE instructors. If you have an interest in this please contact her at DE@mavpca.org. Madhu Rao (that’s me) reminded the board that a nomination committee should be created to help recruit individuals to serve on the executive council. Lori Mauthe volunteered to serve as the committee chair. Bruce McQuaid and Luke Edson also volunteered and will join her as at-large members. On behalf of the region, thank you for your service. Tom Minnella reported that he has followed up on the insurance certificates for upcoming events. John Hamilton thanked everyone for their help and participation in region events, and as usual he announced the Maverick of the
Month. For more information about that please see his column in this edition of Slipstream. Meeting adjourned at 8:18pm.

he Maverick Region of PCA is the only car club I have really ever belonged to. Can’t count the Antique Automobile Club in 1962 when I was a 15-year-old with my 1927 Model T Ford, since I only went to two meetings. (Hey! Everyone there was just too old for me!) I have often wondered how many other Mavericks have made special connections among our 2,000 members. I have personally seen over and over again how quickly members come to each other’s aid when help is needed: for the Porsche, for an event, or just for each other. Over the years I’ve noticed that some people are asked to help, some people formally volunteer and are given guidance, and some just see a need and start doing things!
Richard Diller is in the third category. Richard and his family live in Killeen, and choose to drive quite a ways north to be part of the Maverick crowd instead of going a bit south to Austin. I guess he feels that “connection” with us. Richard has been coming to our driving events since the late 80s after he had gotten one of his Porsches painted by Dan Butts and then discovered Ed Mayo next door to him. Richard has always been an engineer and “frustrated racer” at heart. He remembers taking washing machines apart and creating gokarts from whatever he could find.
his trailer, sets it up near the track, and makes sure things stay safe. Richard is very complimentary of our Driving Schools. He remembers when Ed Mayo (as President two years running) helped launch those schools in the early 90s. Richard feels “the schools have progressed to the point that they are among the best in the nation.” Personally I think the whole Region is among the best in the nation.
When he was in the Army (he’s a retired Colonel) he almost got in trouble with the MPs for racing Jeeps at night. It’s ironic now to hear that story because apparently Richard has taken on the responsibility of being an “MP” at the Mineral Wells driving events that include an overnight stay. He brings

April Sunday Drive: Ennis Bluebonnet Tour By Don Sebert

pril 28 and 29. What a weekend of Porsche overload. Saturday was a continuing episode of Maverick’s Historical 50 year anniversary celebration at Texas Motor Speedway, with most all years of Porsche represented, along with old time members. We enjoyed Bratwurst and flowing beer, thanks to our expert bartenders, Beej Harvey and Tom Froehlich. Beej had more customers, due to her prettier looks. Sorry Tom, you’d better keep your day job. It was a grand day for Porsche viewing, with a great turnout. Sunday was a grand tour of the Texas bluebonnet countryside.

This particular Sunday was a warm Texas spring day with multicolored Porsche bonnets up & down to view the Texas Bluebonnets. We met in Hutchins, Texas, south of Dallas on I-45, at 1:00pm. By the time we left, we had accumulated 46 cars and 85 Maverick members, eager to get on the road. What a sight.

There were a couple of pit stops, which gave everyone time to visit with old and new friends. We had individual groups of 11 cars each, so no one got lost or left behind. Great job by the group leaders: Brendan, Gareth, Khalid and John. The Bluebonnets were still plentiful along with their usual

Great time for lots of conversation. It was really nice to see so many new faces as well as old faces. The secret must be out as to what great events the Maverick Region puts on.
For those of you who missed this one, don’t do it again. However, you get a reprieve to enjoy many more in the upcoming months.

Tech Session: Detailing Your Car By Nikolaus Klemmer

ay 19. Saturday. Another beautiful spring day in Dallas. The garage door is open, a whiff of air sweeps through the garage as this owner of his India Red 944 stands back, after having all but erased the traces of a late night incident with a critter

The area in question was back in shape, painted, buffed, polished, waxed, and paint-protective film applied – ready to go again. But wait – what about the rest of the car? Here we have single stage paint, more than twenty years old, and showing its age just a bit from exposure to the Texas elements. So, this made me think of the “Detailing Your Car” event at “Jack’s Garage” that afternoon. Why not get some tips from the experts – maybe there is still hope! Clearly, I didn’t know what to expect, either of the event or of Jack’s place. Not exactly your typical two-car garage. Jack turns out to be Jack Griffin, of IMSA GT and Le Mans racing fame in the mid Eight-
ies. Jack has been around Porsches longer than most, raced them for many years, currently maintains a private collection of some exquisite examples of the air-cooled species, and is otherwise eagerly involved in all Andy Kay things cars, hobby-wise and enterprise-wise. Passing by a collection of racing trophies, pictures of Jack’s cars, and even his ’84 and ’85 Le Mans
demonstration focused on the basic steps, Griot’s Garage products, applicator pads, cloths, and work sequence. This all looked like magic – until he finally disclosed that it took him 64 layers of waxes and other treatments to give the car the concours-winning look it has!
badges, a crowd of 25 or so aficionados (including this owner of the battered 944) gathered around 356s, 911s, a Speedster and one of the best looking 914s I know. Center-stage was Andy Kay’s 1979 Guards Red Euro 911 SC. Andy, based on his experience from operating “Blue Ribbon Detail”, gave a lively demonstration, spiced up with the occasional horror story of what not to do to your paint. His 911 looks better than

Maverick Region 2012 Autocross School Photos by Kevin Hardison Maverick Region hosts an Autocross School every spring to introduce new drivers to the sport, and to help them find the limits of their cars in a safe learning environment. Here are comments from some of this year’s students. My husband George signed me up for AX without asking me (mostly because I yelled at him so much last year during our drives at the BRBS, the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit in North Carolina). Needless to say, I did not want to do AX!! The thought of me driving in AX terrified me. Several days later George announced that he was signing up, too; that made me feel a lot better knowing he would be there to “hold my hand.”
The braking exercise on wet pavement made it easier to get the ABS to kick in
Three days prior to the event, George informed me that he had to fly to D.C. for work and would not be able to join me at the AX. You can imagine that I was not a happy camper!
But I drove our 2006 911 Carrera S through the rain, thunder and lightning . . . not really sure where I was going, and hoping my GPS didn’t fail me. I made it to Pennington Field in Bedford, found the group, and although my feet, socks and shoes were soaked from the river flowing over my feet, I enjoyed talking with old friends and meeting new ones.
Sunday morning – AX day in Bedford . . . where the heck is Bedford?! Not only did I not want to do this, I had to get up at 6am, and leave the house by 7am in a big rain storm, to do something I didn’t willingly sign up for! Heck, I didn’t actually know what AX was!
The rain looked like it might slow up a bit so each student was assigned an instructor. It was my good fortune to have Lisa Steele as my instructor. Lisa was fabulous! She not only gave me what I consider excellent training, she was very patient, encouraging and
fun. Lisa understood my anxiety and didn’t push me. We had so much fun! I learned quite a lot and now feel much more confident about driving and/or being a passenger in our 911 while zooming down narrow two-lane roads, with blind curves and hills ahead. I apologize for such a long story, but wanted you to know that I am looking forward to this year’s BRBS! I want to personally thank each and every person who worked on the Pennington AX School - it was an incredible amount of work to set up all the courses. Thanks to their love of AX and their patience and encouragement, I truly appreciated the opportunity to feel more confident with our 911. Sadly, we won’t be able to participate in the upcoming AX due to our trip to BRBS, but you can bet that I won’t miss many! - Dee Luxbacher Had a great time. Wendy was a fabulous instructor. Really helped learning what the car can do. I liked it a lot. - Bud Heflin

From my experiences with the other clubs you have the best group by far. One day we will get a Porsche! - Phillip Craddock I had a great time at the AX 101 school. I’ve owned my 2007 Boxster S for a little over a month and this was the first opportunity I had to explore the limits of handling on my car. After driving it through the autocross course, driving around town is just not as fun. I will be

The weather didn’t cooperate for the first half of the day but we all toughed it out and were able to get in 10 runs on a full course. I felt more comfortable after each run and that was evident by looking at my times. Everyone in PCA has been very accepting in my unusual car/engine combination. I was actually told before joining the PCA that it may not be looked on that well, but that has not been the case at all. I look forward to seeing everyone again at future events. - Scott Cepak

I appreciate everyone’s efforts to bring about such a wonderful opportunity for our members.

All enjoyed a relaxed afternoon around Jack’s collection, most were able to gather something new during Andy’s demonstration, and the author learned that he should not use waxes with petroleum distillates on his newly applied paint protection film, or else it will turn yellow and need replacement soon. Cliff ’s Ramblings: One of Those Days By Cliff Blackshear
A
round the second week of May I arrived at work and found myself trying to organize which problem we had in the shop to worry about the most. The answer was “All of them.” Jason had a 2012 Cayenne with a major oil leak. He was struggling to find the origin of the leak. Oil was showing up at the back of the engine where the cylinder head and engine block mate together, running along the seam and down the back of the block. With everything assembled there was no way to determine where it was coming from. Head to block area - maybe head
gasket? Cylinder head cover leaking and oil actually running down the back side of the head? Many other possibilities needed to be examined. As there was no way to get a visual on the back side of the head, Jason looked and looked with our bore scope. He had cleaned the area thoroughly and sprayed with trace powder, and ran the engine hoping to see origin of leak. No joy. We talked and multiple others had come over and tried to help. There was simply no way to know for sure. So disassembling with trace powder on there and hoping to see something was our next best next move. Intake comes off. Man, the vario-ram intake on a 2012 6-cylinder Cayenne is a bear to remove. Turns out it was the
mechanical vacuum pump leaking where it is mated to the head and driven off the camshaft. Even then, Jason was paranoid that might not truly be it. He resealed, reassembled with fresh trace powder and test drove. Looked and looked afterwards plus used bore scope to peek everywhere possible afterwards. It appeared to have resolved the problem. Right next to Jason was Brian with a Panamera that was towed in. The engine had “made a noise” while driving and died; this was the only information he had to work with. Pushed the car in and he started diagnosis. About an hour into diagnosis he determined that the camshafts on bank one were

his month’s New Member Spotlight is on Kevin Creed. He is the proud owner of a 2008 Cayenne GTS and a 2012 Carrera GTS. Kevin purchased the Cayenne in April of 2008 and the Carrera in February of 2012, which is when Kevin and his wife joined PCA.
Kevin has owned a BMW X5 (before purchasing the Cayenne), a C5 Corvette, and several Suburbans over the years. The only car Kevin doesn’t own any more but he wishes he still had is a 1974 Volkswagen Microbus.
Kevin met his lovely bride Linda in college at UC Irvine, and they just celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary…Congratulations Kevin and Linda! They have two daughters, Catie and Kelsey. Catie just graduated from UT Austin, and Kelsey will graduate from the same school next May.
The Creed family has been in the DFW area since 1992. Kevin started working for Alcon Laboratories in California in 1983. He got an opportunity to transfer to the headquarters in Fort Worth, so they moved to Colleyville over the Labor Day weekend in 1992. They are still living in the same house and Kevin still works for Alcon.
“Linda and I both enjoy attending UT athletic events in Austin and enjoy traveling with our kids whenever everyone is available.” Look for Kevin on Sunday Drives and please join me in giving Kevin a warm Maverick WELCOME! continued from page 22 out of time. Plus he had noted a huge loss of cylinder pressure on #3 chamber, 90% leakage. Cylinders 1, 2, and 4 had all passed a pressure loss test. He removed the cylinder head cover and found all 4 bolt heads for the vario cam adjuster lying in the bottom of the head, sheared off. Next, the cylinder head was off to examine the chain drive for stretching, as well as to look at damage to chain rails, drive and driven gears. A piston-to-valve collision was apparent, and we needed to see the piston crown condition. I wanted to see all the valves from the head. I have seen bent valves pass a pressure loss test before and suspected more than just cylinder 3 was damaged. Chad had another 2012 Cayenne with a weird issue. The auto start/ stop system was inoperative.
Auto start/stop is a system that shuts the engine off while sitting stopped at red lights, etc. When you release the brake it restarts, and by the time your foot hits the accelerator pedal the engine responds normally. The system was not working. In the instrument cluster a light came on showing the system was disabled at every stop. A small green symbol with an “A” in the middle and a slash through it was illuminated. This is not unusual but typically only happens when the engine is not warmed up, or there is too much electrical demand for shut off. A huge number of parameters have to be met for the system to operate correctly. Chad and I had sat the night before after 6 pm looking at a vehicle analysis log, looking for what might have kept
the system from working. The log held nearly 300 pages of data. We knew we needed to concentrate on DME, Gateway, and AC Controls to find the answer. I brought the log up again and spent quite a bit of time looking at it. Had the car on a charger and it indicated battery was 100%. Charging system was working with no issues. Test drove and looked at actual values, input values and found nothing out of place. Filed a request for technical assistance from Porsche. Back to Brian’s Panamera cylinder head. I removed all of the intake valves and found #4 valves bent like pretzels. That cylinder had passed a cylinder pressure loss test; proof of what I suspected. All the valve guides and valve seats were fine. Sometimes bent valves just do not show up on pressure loss

continued from page 25 or compression tests. Compression tests are way more unreliable than a pressure loss test. “Pressure loss” is factory lingo for a leak-down check. I ordered 16 valves for that head. Thought about simply seating the new valves myself, then doing a bluing check. I realized that with 11 other techs in the shop and ongoing work coming in, I would not have the time. Contacted machine shop and explained what we needed done to that head in terms of further examination and repair. All piston crowns were barely touched. It doesn’t take much to bend a valve in a 4 valve engine; the pistons, however, are extremely robust. Back to the start/stop issue in the Cayenne. Porsche responds

to my technical assistance request and tells me the system is blocked due to a brake pressure sensor. Huh? They found it in the log we generated. System blocked from shutting engine off over 1000 times by brake system monitoring. I replied back and wanted to know where they saw this in the log. They responded and I went back to the log and found it. One line, on one page, out of three hundred pages. It glared at me when I saw it and seemed so obvious. It was in the DME data section. I should have seen it considering how many times I looked at the DME data. Arrrggghh! My question is why was there no fault information or actual value information or input data information to help here? Next looked at brake pressure values and found all ok. Vacuum
system checked out. That left the brake vacuum sensor as the major suspect. Ordered a new one. Chad installed it the next day and the system returned to “operating as designed.” Jeez. I have spoken with Engineering (we are a monitoring dealer and have direct contact with Engineering) about these cars. They are investigating software to make sure we can see brake system monitoring in a better way. Looking to see if any issues for camshaft adjuster fasteners are occurring besides the one we have. They are gonna look into sealing issues for vacuum pumps on 6-cylinder engines. What a day.
