Shifting Gears: Activities During Summer Hiatus By Jim Falgout, Region President

W

e keep on growing. Our membership has gone over 2,400. We were at 2,434 at the end of May. That is great, but it also means we need more volunteers to help make membership in your club a good experience for everyone. Yes, I am starting out with an appeal for volunteers. In fact, in early June, I learned that PCA has created a new committee, Social Media. If you think you would enjoy working in that area, please let me know so I can get you connected with the national chairperson. YOUR CLUB WANTS YOU . . . to get involved. You will really be glad you did. By the time you read this, we will have had our Concours-within-a-Concours at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. That is really nice venue, tree-covered on grass. Also, PCA will have had its annual Porsche Parade. If you have not participated in either of these, I strongly recommend you do so next year. Parade is held at a different location every year (Jay Peak, Vermont in 2016). For anyone who is considering attending a board meeting, and I encourage you to do so. We will not have a board meeting in July, because so many of our board members will have just returned from Parade. We will resume board meetings in August. While we do not have many events in July and August because of the heat and vacations, we will have our social events and an autocross each month. We also have a special event on Saturday, August 15: our second Photo Workshop. Even with heat We had an excellent display of and vacations in photos taken by members of July and August, their Porsches on exhibit at last we will have our year’s Founders’ Day, so if you are inclined to take pictures of your social events and an autocross Porsche or others, this workshop could be very beneficial. each month.

Mav of the Month Every month it is a challenge to select a Mav of the Month. We have so many members that give so much to make our club the success it is. This month I have selected a member that has been dedicated to making our Drivers’ Education events a success. He has been in charge of the coaches. Having good coaches and enough coaches is an ongoing challenge and he has met it. John Sandusky has done an excellent job and is one of the reasons our DE program is so successful. Next time you are at a DE, be sure to thank John for his efforts. We certainly appreciate the contribution he has made and continues to make to the DE program. Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

A

s the temperature rises in July and August, the number of club activities tends to diminish a bit as some driving events are just more pleasurable when the sun is less scorching. That doesn’t mean your club or your Porsche activities need to hibernate however, just the opposite is true. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of catching up with with some overdue Porsche participation! You might start with honing up on your online presence. In addition to our club website that provides an immense amount of pertinent information as well as historical archives at http://mav.pca. org, we have a very active Facebook community at http://facebook.com/groups/mavpca and a daily Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/MaverickPCA. As mentioned in my article from the last issue, Slipstream is providing more links and QR codes to information online that extends the reading and visual components of many articles and events. You’ll get lots of extra content by using these online options.

And while you are online, why not sharpen your Porsche trivia skills by challenging yourself to either know, or find, the answer to the many interesting questions Jerry DeFeo provides each month. You can find past Trivia quizzes under the Events tab on the club website. Need another indoor club activity for August? Check out page 13 for info on the upcoming Photo Workshop 2 to heighten your skills. This issue also welcomes two new advertisers to support the publishing of Slipstream. You can learn more about them on pp. 26-27. Please consider supporting all of our advertisers when possible! Remember that our club is planning to publish a printed (no electronic versions will be available) member directory this fall. If you DO NOT want your name and address information included be sure to follow the steps listed in the ad on page 7 of this issue. As far as what’s “around the bend”, our August issue will include photos and information from the big Autos in the Park Concours event that occurred in early June as well as an up close look at PCA Parade activities in which many of our members will have participated. This 60th PCA Anniversary is something worth celebrating!

Gimme a Minute: June Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

W

hile the official meeting was started by President Jim Falgout at 7:03 PM, Concours Chair Andy Kay needed to give his report shortly before that. He said that this coming weekend (June 7) was the Tenth Annual Autos in the Park Concours d’Elegance at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. He will have similar classes as last time. In addition to the medallions to give out, he had two lovely trophies to award. Multiple car clubs will be represented at the show in addition to Porsches. Jim then gave the report for the absent Membership Chairs, Tom and Susan Froehlich. Our region is up from last month by 29 primary members and 38 total members! We are now at 1,559 primary and 2,434 total members. PCA National now has a Social Media Chair to help regions navigate this growing trend. Vice President Gareth Maurice reported that the insurance has been revised for the recently rescheduled Rancho Sereno Saturday Drive, and all other events have been covered as well. Drivers’ Education Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported that the last DE event had low attendance, probably due to it being on Memorial Day Weekend, and people had other plans. Despite the torrential downpours in the evenings, the event was still a great learning lesson. Fortunately, it didn’t rain much during the day, but we still had water across the track and tons of mud to deal with. The next event in September should be drier. As a help to Slipstream and the photography, she created and had printed business cards with instructions how to sub6 July

mit quality photos for Slipstream. Event chairs can hand the cards out to people they see taking photos at their events. PR Chair Linda Bambina said that there are about 18 couples going to the Porsche Parade this year in French Lick, Indiana. She is hosting a pre-Parade dinner Tuesday, June 9 to help people communicate about routes, etc. She is excited that we entered Robyn and Travis Howard as candidates for Family of the Year. *crossing fingers* She is also always looking for enthusiastic people to help the club and assist/take over for her. Editor Jim Hirsch said he will be out of town next month when he would normally finish and submit Slipstream, so he needed to move back the deadline to the 8th of the month. He is working on setting up a photo bucket or similar to have people view the photos that were not able to make it into Slipstream. Continuing to work on the calendar idea, he had a sample to show us that was great quality and should be a reasonable expense. More later. Co-Editor Carey Spreen has been culling out his collection of Slipstreams from the past few years. He will preserve some for archives, but recycle the rest. Treasurer Rich Solomon reported that we have about $129K in the bank, thanks to some rebates from National and other successful events. He is still working to settle up the finances from the Club Race at COTA. Our last DE came out a little ahead, which is good. He will be working on billings for the next Slipstream advertising year. Guest Jouni Hiltunen was back. He thoroughly enjoyed this last DE and appreciated his instructor. He would like to help out with the DE or Autocross program, if he could.

June 3, 2015 Sunday Drive Chair Tom Martin told us that the Rancho Sereno event was postponed because many of the roads were under water. We fortunately dodged a bullet with the catering, as someone else was able to buy the barbecue meat that we had guaranteed to buy. The tour was rescheduled for June 20. He has further drives planned through the fall. Keep watching Slipstream and the online Maverick calendar. Guest Cindy Bliss was back. She has a local singles group and is working to suggest possible future Monthly dinner social locations, possibly in Plano. Stephanie Ho is glad to get new ideas. New guest Brenda Dranow was in attendance to observe. She would love to get more involved and volunteer in the future. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho said that we had nearly 120 people who attended the event at Lavendou. She was able to fill vacated RSVP slots with others on the waiting list, even a few hours before the event. The owner gave us the entire restaurant in the end, for a wonderful dinner and a generous discount. There were over 60 cars there! She is working to find the right German restaurant for the Sept or Oct event. Coming in June is Love & War in Texas in Grapevine and we return to the Hilton Garden Inn in July. August will be at Wildwood in Southlake. Jim Falgout reminded everyone that there is no board meeting in July. Before we adjourned at 8:00, he presented the Maverick of the Month to John Sandusky, Chief Driving Instructor for our DE Program, for his years of work making our DEs such a success. Thanks, John! Living the Dream: PCA Driver Education Events By Bob Kramer

S

ome of my best times have occurred on a racetrack. In my early years, I was nuts for motorcycles and drag racing. These passions culminated in my campaigning a self-built 1132cc Kawasaki Pro Stock drag bike. I won the CDBA (Colorado Drag Bike Association), “Fast 8” title my first year with it.

Long about then, the GT3 I had been lusting after finally arrived at the dealership. With this car, I figured some driver education could be beneficial, even if I had to get it in the beginner group. So I registered, and was pleased to see there was room to include my experience in the “driver profile” section. I hoped it might help me move through the ranks more quickly. It did: when I received registration confirmation, I saw I had been placed in the Blue group.

My interests eventually went toward road-racing, where over the years I campaigned a Honda MT125 R2, a Honda CBR 900RR, and finally a Ducati 916, licensed as an Expert in WSMC (Willow Springs Motorcycle Club).

The GT3’s odometer showed 1940 miles when I got to the grid for my first session. Perfect! It’s broken in and ready to rock and roll. My instructor, David Lindner, arrived and introduced himself. His demeanor, knowledge and experience quickly put me at ease. We shared an intercom system he brought so we could communicate easily throughout each session. On track, he made suggestions that were quite helpful, especially when I actually made the adjustments. “This is excellent” kept going GT3 at MSR through my mind. I could feel a stupid grin forming on my face as each session progressed. What a hoot!

When I moved from CA to TX, I decided it was time to switch from motorcycles to cars. Can you imagine my surprise when I was told by the local tracks that they required you to be pointed by in order to pass someone? And then only in a straight? I’d never heard of such a thing. It put me off getting involved for several years. Eventually, the draw to be on a racetrack was too much to ignore. Having a new 2014 Cayman S made the yearning all that much worse. I finally gave in and got a membership to Eagles Canyon Raceway. Being retired allowed me to enjoy the track on many a Thursday Cayman S at ECR and Friday where I had almost exclusive use of the track. I was in heaven except for the missing element of competition. That’s when people started telling me about PCA DE events. Again though, the controlled passing thing just didn’t figure. On top of that, several people told me I’d have to spend a lot of time in the Green (beginner) group, even though I had racing experience. I decided to pass on getting involved. Strangely though, I kept hearing about how much fun it was, even from people who were racers. How could this be since it isn’t racing? I decided the only way to find out was to go to an event and check it out myself. The first DE I attended was as a spectator at MotorSport Ranch - Cresson. Most everyone was friendly, talkative and quite upbeat. It was hard not to notice the stupid grins many people had on their faces. I took that as a good sign. 8 July

David was fantastic. He even took me out in his car a couple sessions to better show me how to improve. The better I did, the easier it got, and the more at ease I was in the car. Soon we were cracking jokes and having a great time, even as the speeds had increased significantly. I was having one of the greatest times ever -- and I got promoted to Blue Solo during the second session of the second day. Why hadn’t I started doing this sooner? It turns out the passing restrictions aren’t as bad as I expected. Catching the car in front of you is a lot of what racing is all about anyway, and there’s plenty of opportunity for that. Not having to worry about some nut job trying to pass you at the wrong time is also pretty nice, especially if you like your car. The best part of it is being able to experience your limits and your car’s limits in a safe and helpful environment. In that respect, everyone wins. If anyone is sitting on the fence trying to decide if DEs are worthwhile, let me assure you that they are. Consider this: you get two days of track time, complete with instruction when desired, meals, and oft times a T-shirt, for less than $350. Just try and find a deal like that anywhere else. On top of that, you’ll likely have about $1000 worth of fun and meet a lot of fantastic people too. You might even have one of the best days of your life.


Cliff ’s Ramblings: Contemplating Technology By Cliff Blackshear

S

o yesterday a Macan comes in and has no working headlights, turn signals, wipers, or four-way flashers. The owner was willing to drive in during the day because the brake lights worked. However, he was somewhat uncomfortable with using hand signals for turns. I hooked up the trusty PIWIS 2 laptop and interrogated the micro processors for what had failed. I fully expected to find an issue with the front end control unit. Nope. Everybody was happy with each other. No faults. Huh? Moved to drive links menu in “Front Module” and attempted to turn on the headlights. Nope. Not happening. Sat there and thought about “transport

Transport mode deactivates high battery drain systems and limits the vehicle to 25 mph top speed. Been that way for years and years. We ran a vehicle handover routine, which deactivates transport mode, then re-checked operation of lights etc. Nothing. We then gave the owner a loan car and kept the Macan for more intensive diagnosis.

So a second VAL was generated after repairs, and all were attached to PQIS system for Porsche to review. I do not think it will recur here, as it never has in the past. Autocross Update: Mirrorcross at Mineral Wells

E

quipe Rapide is administering the Maverick Region, Porsche Club of America, (PCA), autocross series for 2015 and held a mirrorcross in Mineral Wells on May 31st. It consisted of two mirror image courses with a drag race start. Two cars go head to head at the NHRA style Christmas Tree. After completing the run they switch sides and run again. Competitors took 8 runs back to back alternating left and right courses

and then went back to the paddock. Competitors got one run group in the AM and one run group in the PM for a total of 16 runs on course. The best time from the right and the best time from the left was combined for the scores below. The unusual course map is displayed here as are our Maverick Region members’ results.

A Suspension Odyssey Part 7: Brake Caliper Rebuild

L

et me start this month’s article by offering my thanks to the rain gods for finally ending their onslaught of torrential down pours over North Texas. And although I am grateful that the lake levels are now above normal and that the grass is green, I want to be able to drive my cars on the weekends soaking up the sunshine . . . maybe June will be a more promising month for cruising. With my literary offering out of the way, let’s begin with a recap of last month’s article regarding front brake calipers. As of now, your car should be jacked up with its front wheels off, the brake calipers should be unbolted and detached from their brake lines, the brake pads should have been removed and inspected, and the caliper’s pistons should be free of their housings, awaiting you on your workbench. If this checklist has been completed, it is time to move on to cleaning and rebuilding the calipers. Contrary to popular belief, this procedure is not as scary as it might sound. The hardest part is getting those pesky pistons out of their housings, but with those out of the way, everything that follows is gravy. Start by spreading out the entire caliper assembly on your work station. The calipers, their associated hardware, the brake pad clips, and the brake pad push pins can all be cleaned with a Scotch-Brite pad and conventional brake cleaner. While scrubbing the caliper, make sure you get into all of its grooves and recesses. Pay special attention when addressing the sides of the pistons and the piston housings, as these areas need to be not only clean, but smooth and scratch-free in order for the pistons to slide back in and the assembly not to leak after reassembly. During the cleaning process take note of the condition of your calipers; as always, you are looking for scratches, pitting, and rust. A little surface rust present on the caliper halves, or even on the piston face itself, is not detrimental, -- it just means that you will need to scrub a little harder and longer to polish those cancerous areas. If the pitting or rust is severe, new calipers will need to be purchased, or at the very least professionally sandblasted and re-surfaced at a reputable machine shop. When all the parts you have been working on are clean and dry, blow some compressed air through all of the caliper’s passages to remove any dust, dirt, or debris. An excellent rust buster is distilled vinegar. Place any rusty metal part in a cup of vinegar for a few hours, scrub, rinse, and watch the rust just disappear! 12 July

A brake caliper rebuild kit, which includes a new rubber boot, retaining clip, and inner housing seal, can be purchased from various auto parts stores for reasonably cheap prices. The first step is to coat the caliper housing and housing seal with brake fluid. Place the seal in the inner groove found within the housing, making sure An example of a it sets properly and is flush with the rest of the housing surface. clean caliper. Next, coat the piston with clean brake fluid and then place it onto the opening of its housing without pushing it in or letting it fall down. The indentations on the piston face need to be set at a 20-degree angle to the brake pads. A great diagram for accomplishing this angle is available for download and printing on the Pelican Parts Website. Once you feel the angle is just right, press the piston down into its housing. Next, double check that the angle of the piston was retained, and repeat the process with the other side of the caliper. If the angle was lost in the process, the pistons will need to be blown back out and reset. Remember, patience during these steps is your only friend. Now that the pistons are back in, you can reinstall the rubber boot and retaining clip that came in the rebuild kit. Reinstall the brake pads, and re-attach the caliper to the car. The final step with this procedure is to bleed the brakes. Then just take the car for a short test drive. Assess the feel of the brakes, and if needed, re-bleed, go for another spin, and you’re done! Well, we have finally come to the end of my 914’s front suspension rebuild. The brakes, discs, shocks, ball joints, tie rods, boots, and associated hardware have all been either cleaned or replaced. I can tell you that the car truly feels phenomenally different. I sense the tightness in the steering, and can absolutely feel an improvement in the shock absorber performance while I cruise over the bumps in the road. Although this particular build is over, don’t be totally discouraged. My 914 is old and still has plenty of work that needs to be done to it, not only to keep it running, but to make it worthy of wearing the Porsche crest. The rest of my summer is already booked with body work, valve adjustments, points and timing inspections, electrical work, and all around tune ups—and that is just on the 914! My 1987 944 will also need some attention this year. Wrench on Mavs!

Six Countries in Six Days: A Trip to Europe to Remember By Wendy Shoffit

ack in 2012, when Maverick Region was celebrating its 50th anniversary, the board decided to have a huge year, finishing off in December with a Grand Raffle. It was a trip for 2 to Germany (airfare, 7 night hotel stay, rental car allowance, Porsche factory tour, and Porsche museum). It was to be the trip of a lifetime! We sold these tickets all year long, and James and I each bought one ticket to help support the club. Founders’ Day finally arrived and it was a glorious night. When it came down to the drawing, Lisa Huffaker (from the Hope House) pulled out the winning ticket. It was MY NAME! I didn’t even hear her at first, but when I did… the celebration ensued! It was a dream come true!

James used frequent flyer miles for first class tickets, and let me tell you, THAT is the life! It made the overnight flight to Frankfurt as pleasant as it could ever be. We arrived and hit the ground running. We opted to rent a Porsche Macan S Diesel for our trek. Oh what a trek it was. We had 6 countries we wanted to visit and only 6 days to do it in. We *really* wanted to get our passports stamped in the little tiny countries to give us some travel street cred.

of years. We drove to the tiny little country of Liechtenstein (Country #4) and admired the Vaduz Castle. It was a phenomenal place that the current royals STILL live in! From there, we drove on to the next hotel in Füssen, Germany through a little spot of Switzerland (Country #5). Near Füssen was an absolute MUST SEE - the Neuschwanstein Castle created by Bavarian King Ludwig II. Starting in 1868, despite running out of money, he spent years building this fantastic castle. Long story short, he never finished it, was declared insane, and died the next day. Look him up for the full story! It’s fascinating. This castle was the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella’s castle. When we arrived in the morning for our tour, it had snowed all night and it was a magical site, including the horse carriage ride up to the castle.

A dream trip come true At the time, our daughter, Jasmine was only 15. The trip was for two, not three, and besides she wanted US to have this for ourselves. Well, we couldn’t exactly leave her alone for a week, so we waited for the right time to go. We tried during the summer, but the factory is closed all of August. Winter? Nope… the Factory was closed for Christmas. Finally this April everything came together! Jasmine is now 18 and very independent, so we booked and planned our trip with the help of the fabulous 16 July

So, we drove from Frankfurt, Germany (Country #1) on to Luxembourg City (Country #2). It’s a cool city with lots of elevation, which confused our Navigation system. We might have at one point been driving on the sidewalk; I’m still not sure. We drove around the city for a short while, but then moved on. France (Country #3) was in between us and our first hotel. We found no crepes to eat there, but did see a few Porsches on a drive while we were on the Autobahn. Baden-Baden, Germany is a beautiful little town that is worth a stay. The next day was a big driving day. We drove through lots of little German towns through the Black Forest that were just what I wanted them to be. Some were Medieval looking and you knew they had been there for thousands

The Neuschwanstein Castle We then drove on to Munich to see what we could see. The Deutches Museum is amazing. We could have spent many hours (or days) there. They had fascinating exhibits where they cut things in half so you could see what it looked like inside… like a submarine and a slice of a jumbo jet. We left the museum and wandered downtown and arrived at the Marienplatz exactly as the Glockenspiel was starting. From there we went to our hotel in Salzburg, Austria (Country #6)! Why, do you ask, when it’s out


Wendy on the Sound of Music tour of the way? You see… the Sound of Music is my all-time favorite movie. This year is the 50th anniversary of it and call me a sucker, but I HAD to do the tour. It didn’t disappoint! Too corny to go into detail here, but if you want to know, just ask. I have LOTS of pics. :) I will say one thing, though, the church they filmed the main wedding in Mondsee is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. After the SoM tour, we were finally on our way to Stuttgart, Germany… the home of the Porsche Factory and Museum. THIS was the Holy Grail… the reason it took us several years for our schedules to sync up with their holidays. This tour also did not disappoint! Despite having to leave Porsche Factory our cameras and cell phones (NO secrets being leaked!), it was an amazing site. German precision is not a misnomer. They make all the 911s and Boxsters in this tiny little factory, all by hand (except for the super cool windshield robot). Each of 108 stations had exactly 3:44 minutes to perform their tasks before it moved on to the next. We asked what happens if there’s a delay. The tour guide said calmly, “There are no delays.” He meant it! Just in time parts delivery, breaks scheduled

to the minute… it’s a well-oiled machine making well-oiled machines! Two short hours later, our tour came to an end and we went on to the museum. Having been there before, we thought it would be quick. However, there might have been 8 cars there that were the same as last time. They are constantly changing it… keeping it fresh for visitors. I highly recommend multiple visits! We then visited the Mercedes Museum to compare and contrast the two. Holy cow they could not Porsche Museum have been more different! But this isn’t an article for the Mercedes Club, so I’m moving on. The next day was another biggie. We drove up to the Nürburgring and rented a 991S! Oh my goodness! Thirteen miles of historical racetrack. One thousand feet in elevation change from the highest to the lowest spots on the track. Seventy-three turns, many of which were blind. The scariest, most thrilling ride & drive of my life. James did 2 laps and I did 2 laps. Times are irrelevant with traffic and unsure start/stop points, but for those of you scoring at home, we were both under 10 minutes. While James driving parked the Nürburgring there, with Wendy what pulls up next to us? A Cayman GT4, a model not yet in production…but

there it was! It was a press car on a very impressive test drive, according to the lucky journalist. I need HIS job! We finished up the evening with dinner at the famous Restaurant Pistenklause with a fellow PCA member living in Germany, Michael Osborn, who had come out to show us around and enjoy the ‘ring. We then took our final drive to Frankfurt for the flight home. I could not have asked for a better trip, except if it had been TWO weeks instead of SIX days. Exhausted, satisfied, and thrilled, we headed back home to tell the tale. Thank you, Maverick Region and especially to Linda Bambina, for making this trip happen! Travel tips: • Forget passport stamps – they don’t do them anymore, unless you really hunt for it! • If you want an authentic cuckoo clock, buy one in Triberg, Germany. • Make your factory tour request months ahead and be prepared to move quickly when you get your date. We had 3 weeks to plan. • Neuschwanstein Castle – take the horse and carriage up, but walk down. • The Macan is an AMAZING vehicle! We will own one sooner than we thought we would! • LOVE the Autobahn! No speed limit, the left lane is for passing ONLY, and (nearly) everyone drives with a purpose. • Spend WAY more time than we did doing all this. Trust me, it’s worth it! • Look out for the Cayman GT4… it is one fantastic car! You never know where one will pop up.

ay 21, 2015 brought us to Lavendou French Bistro in North Dallas. D Magazine rated Lavendou as the Best French Restaurant in Dallas in 2013, 2012, and 2010, and it certainly hasn’t lost any ground since. What started out as a small event turned out at the end to be the largest Thursday evening Social Event to date for the Mavs. On the day of cooperated and allowed us an evening without rain and storms. Once inside we were greeted with the warm atmosphere of the restaurant and gracious wait staff making the rounds with trays of hors d’oeuvres. Lavendou did a marvelous job keeping up with our crowd. At our table we ordered additional appetizers of soup and escargot. The entrees were delicious with a wide variety to accommodate every palate.

A large area of the parking lot was cordoned off to offer our cars an exclusive Porsche Only parking experience, something I personally enjoy so I don’t have to walk a mile to the restaurant! Hanging With Hurley as told by Allen Myers Having owned Porsches for eight years, I had certainly heard of Hurley Haywood, but had never done any research on his automotive background. This past April my son Darren, who lives in Denver with his young family and his ’09 Cayman S, called, inviting me to share in a small, private “event” in Jacksonville, FL hosted by Mr. Haywood. My answer took no hesitation. Incidentally I’m the young-at-heart dude who drives the British green Cayman S at most of our DE sessions. I immediately Googled Hurley and was blown away: “H. Haywood is the most decorated endurance race driver in history!” Three WINS at Le Mans, five wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, two wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring, 18 Indy starts, and much more. Yeah, Son, I’m all in!!!! Darren is with a money management group that invests for The University of North Florida Foundation in Jacksonville. A lady who works with the foundation knows Darren is a Porsche guy, happens to be good friends with Hurley, and knew he had an extensive car collection housed in Jacksonville. She became interested, contacted the “couldn’t be more gracious” racing legend, and coordinated the Denver group’s up-coming business meeting with a few interested local friends to get together on May 8th for a rather rare personal tour. We were greeted by the fit and friendly legend at his Porsche Dealership, one of his multiple Brumos Racing automobile dealerships. Our day was kick-started by his new custom-made 918, displayed front and center, complete with $1,001,000 delivery sticker- the first of our many “wows!” Also on the floor is his 917/10TC Can-Am beast (1,000+HP) with the same color scheme.

From there we were transported in a new MB Sprinter mini bus to his nearby Lexus Dealership, where a large warehouse conceals the Brumos Racing garage and a very impressive collection of about 50 (guess) autos and countless pieces of car and racing memorabilia. On every wall are photos of all the greats (yep, even Steve McQueen filming Le Mans), rare autographed posters, trophies, etc., accumulated over 55 years of racing all over the world! Hurley shares this space with the collections of two others. One is the owner of Winn-Dixie. The cars were not all Porsches, but all were special in some way, and spanned one hundred years of production. One impressive trio was a 959, Carrera GT, and a matte black 918! Our tour was made even more exciting by Hurley being joined in the informal walk-around by Don Leatherwood, who has been with him for over 30 years as his pit boss to current General Manager. Don is a fountain of automotive knowledge about each car in the collection, and is also a master mechanic, knowing all the tricks to build and maintain super-fast works of art. I think he and Hurley would have talked all night about their passion. Darren and I feel so honored and privileged to have had this opportunity. That night we ate with the group at a very fine restaurant near Sawgrass Resort. The Player’s Championship was the following week. Hurley is the Chief Driving Instructor at the Porsche Sport Driving School if you desire to pursue an appointment. Especially our lady drivers, as he is practically Paul Newman’s twin!
