SPROCKETS: No Summer Slowdown By David Robertson, Region President There is no doubt that summer has arrived. With temps in the triple digits, you may be tempted to hunker down in the cool confines of your home. Don’t be tempted -- get out and take a drive!

Have you seen those videos of Porsche testing new models out in Death Valley? They don’t seem to be affected and North Texas is like a Fall weather in comparison

You may think that club events slow down in these summer months, but in July there is something going on every week. In fact, I will be driving up to the Porsche Parade this month to do much more driving, where I will I arrive with hundreds of other PCA members from all over North America. This year’s Parade is relatively close to home in Missouri, so we can drive up in our 911 without facing the “shame” of attending in a rental car as we did last year. Shipping is not really an option with my daily driver, and we just didn’t have the time to drive to Spokane last year, although most people did and tell me that the journey to Spokane was as much fun as Parade itself. I must say that there is a bit of an element missing when you attend Porsche Parade without a Porsche! I will let you know how it all goes next month, but I am 100% sure that Parade is going to be a lot of fun, and we may have a record attendance of Maverick Region members this year! Along with Parade this month there are a couple of lunches, a Mavs and Mochas featuring the Porsche Cayenne, an Autocross, a happy hour and dinner, Motoring Mavs at Mayos, and a Tech Session about tires. If there is a rare weekend when an event is not planned, there is always an impromptu get-together organized by someone through one of our social media pages. The Maverick board members are always mindful of overlapping events or scheduling at certain times. However, sometimes due to availability of venues, or more likely, just not having enough days in the month, scheduling conflicts arise. We do everything possible to accommodate everyone, but if someday you have to choose between two events that you want to attend, just know that our amazing board members are always coming up with additional options and ways to accommodate all of our members. Our events are some of the best-attended of any region in the country, and in my opinion, having more choices is better than having fewer choices! 2 July

MAV OF THE MONTH: Landon Stogner Landon Stogner recently celebrated his two-year anniversary with PCA in June. After purchasing his 2010 Porsche 911 Cabriolet, he not only began attending many Maverick events, but quickly stepped up to volunteer with a wide range of club tasks, such as parking members for social events and sharing photos and articles for Slipstream. You’ll often see Landon and his two sons, Corbin and Brady, working as a team to volunteer at events. Most recently, Landon has taken on the task of Volunteer Chair for the Region and has some great ideas for engaging club members. Thank you Landon, we look forward to seeing what you have in store for us!

June Mavs&Mochas: A Really Good Box of Chocolates By Olga Taylor

photos by Andrew Barber and Michael Durovick

Left: The author’s SC, Baby at the SC M&M event.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, every Mavs & Mochas is like a box of really good chocolates. In our case, you’ll never know how many awesome P-cars you’ll see. Such was the case on June 9, 2018 at Mavs & Mochas celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 911SC. With over 150 Porsches in attendance, this “box of chocolates” was incredibly good—it included a vast array of years, models, colors, and owners. Bill Orr (thanks) exhibited his charming doughnut-toting self and super early set-up for early-bird Mavs. So, how did it go? M & M was better than great! Not only were attendees delighted by lots of beautiful Porsches, there were throngs (yes, throngs) of Porsche enthusiasts. Newcomers and veterans bonded over solutions to repair problems and frustration 6 July

over vexing recurring ones. A beautiful sight. There was lots of eye candy to go around, and most of us simply

strolled around enjoying the P-car ambience, which included a silver Porsche reimagined by Singer! Ogled by all, lots of us were simply mesmerized, stuck in a good place. This M & M served as a preparty to the fabulous 70th Anniversary celebration at Park Place Porsche. It exceeded all expectations and I thank my fellow SC owners who showed up for our 40th Anniversary celebration. All in all, Sportscar Together Day 2018 was legendary and a good time was had by all.

Park Place Porsche: 70 years of Sportscar Together By Landon Stogner They say you’re never alone when driving a Porsche, even if you’re the only one in the car, because when you’re in a Porsche you’re part of something bigger -- you’re part of all of us.

June 8, 1948 was a special day in Porsche history. That’s the day the 356 Roadster received its street certification, which was the starting line to a whole legacy of sports cars that has now spanned 70 years. To honor that great achievement, Porsche hosted parties around the world, known as Sportscar Together Day. Right here in our very own backyard, we had several events around the Metroplex to

celebrate such a great accolade, one of which was held at Park Place Porsche in Dallas. Our club’s great partnership with the dealership allowed us to team up to host a Dallas area Sportscar Together Day. Our great club members and assembled a great collection of cars to represent the 70 years of Porsche, which included the 356s of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the 911s from the late 1960s through today’s 2018 model. I was so honored to be asked to represent the 2010 year model with my 997 Cabriolet. It was such a great sight to see how the cars have changed through the decades. My very own PCA Junior, Brady, noticed small differences in the side view mirrors between the 60s and 70s. I told him to really soak it in

because it’s not every day you get to see a display like this first hand. If the great display of cars wasn’t enough, Park Place provided festivities such as music from a live band, great eats that included bratwurst from Degenhardt’s Brat Haus, and Follow the link nitrogen-frozen ice cream to stay cool. This event was so much fun for Porsche fans of all ages. This was a great example how a sports car can bring us together, and another way we are Driving Friendships.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversation By Bill Kruder This month’s encounter took a different twist than most, as I had just met Alan Lage, who had recently bought Michael Baynton’s 1974 911. It’s like the six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Well, Alan suggested that we have an “impromptu,” which, for those of you who haven’t heard, happen on random Saturdays, which we post only on our Mavs & Mochas FB page. Of course, I said! Why don’t you pick the location and I will post something. Alan then begins to tell me he knows this guy who owns a cool donut shop near White Rock Lake. Well as they say, the rest is history, as we had the “impromptu” there with about 2025 cars. I strike up the usual conversation with the donut entrepreneur, asked about his car, what he does and proceeds to tell me he is . . . well, you read on. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

James St Peter, member since 2018, Owner 1997 911 (993) Cab Bill Kruder: So are you originally from here? James St Peter: Believe it or not I was raised and born right here. I was born in Richardson then we moved to Plano. I graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1991. BK: And where did you go to college? JSP: I went to Texas Tech and got a degree in Marketing. 12 July

photos courtesy of James St Peter BK: So how did you meet your wife Amy? JSP: We met after college. I was out with my friend Shane at Mic’s on Greenville, and Shane’s sister and her group of friends met us there. It was totally random. I asked her out a week or so later and we dated for about five years before we got married in 2003.

BK: I know you just recently joined the club but I understand you were a PCA member once before? JSP: I was originally in the club about ten years ago and dropped out; I was entering the unknown world of starting a business and time and focus was going there. Then about a month ago, I heard you guys were having an “impromptu” at Hypnotic Donuts near White Rock Lake and decided to attend. As soon as I was around all those Porsches and people I realized how much I had missed it. I re-joined as soon as I got home.

BK: So how did you get interested in Porsche? JSP: Thinking back I am pretty sure the 928 chase scene with Tom Cruise in Risky Business got the car in the back of my mind. Plus the iconic James Dean and Little Bastard poster and story added some curiosity. From there I had always noticed them and their iconic silhouette on the road. However, nothing hooks you to a Porsche like driving one and that was my case. I was driving around with my friend Wade one day and we saw a 911 sitting outside Hi Line Motors. We went in and I told the salesman, “My boss told me I can get any car but he has to see it first. Can I borrow this for two hours?” He agreed and we just cruised around Dallas in a ‘95 911 Cabriolet for a few hours. We returned and I said, “Well this sucks, he did not approve it, sorry.” The salesman knew we never had my boss look at it and just gave us a smile. Fast forward ten years later: it was pretty much because of my wife Amy, then girlfriend, that sealed the deal. Her dad, Carl Shore, owned Central Porsche Audi in the 70s up in Wichita, Kansas. He has a beautiful red ‘88 Targa with a whale tale that he keeps in the garage. When we got married he loaned us his ‘88 Cab for the wedding. Once I was officially family, he let me (still does) drive when we visit. I loved driving that ‘88 Targa so much, then hearing all the great stories,

good and bad, from Carl about his experience with Porsches and recalling how much fun Wade and I had driving around that 993 Cab, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 993 Cab for myself. BK: So what was your first Porsche? JSP: It’s the 1997 Cab; we bought it about 12 years ago. BK: So let’s get back to you and Hypnotic Donuts? JSP: Well I guess I was always the kid or the guy that was restless and doing odd jobs for money. After spending 18 years in the corporate world, we decided to try something new and interesting. Well we looked around and thought “there are donut shops but they are all the same.” We had heard about this donut shop in Portland, Oregon called Voodoo Donut, so we made a trip to check it out. We liked the whole vibe and eventually talked to them about franchising, but they did not want to do that. However, I really felt this was something the market wanted so I continued to pursue it. BK: So this was something you knew about it? JSP: Heck no (laughing)! I ate donuts but that was all I knew about the business. But my years in corporate taught me a lot about establishing and growing a business.

James and Amy driving off in dad’s 88

I concluded the restaurant industry was basically run by two type of people: chefs who do not know how to run a business, and business executives who do not know how to produce good food. I had to figure out how to meld the two.

wanted out. They said yes. I was stunned because now I had to act on it. We took the plunge and opened here on Garland Road (and realized soon after we opened that we had a lot more seven-day-a-week work weeks ahead of us.)

BK: So . . . JSP: I was still working my corporate job so there was no hurry, but I knew I wanted to do something, so about two years later, 2010, we started selling donuts.

BK: I have to tell you the first time I had a Hypnotic Donut was up in Denton. JSP: Oh yes, we decided to expand, looking for small places that shared the same vibe of laid back people that want to throw back to simpler times, and we opened our second location there about four years ago.

BK: So Hypnotic Donuts is that old already? JSP: Technically yes; we became an LLC and we started selling donuts out of the back of a car on weekends in 2010. We were selling out in five minutes, so we knew we had to take the next step. From there we managed to convince a pizza place to let us sell donuts on Saturdays and Sundays till 10 am using their storefront; mind you we had no signs -- it was word of mouth. We were having good success with this but I was working five days in corporate and then selling donuts on the weekend. So it was seven days a week without a break for one and a half years. I knew we could not sustain this style and had to either be all in or all out on the donut business. BK: When did you open the store? JSP: We were selling our donuts up around Preston and Frankford in Dallas and a friend suggested we look at a storefront near White Rock Lake, so in 2012 walked into the shop where we are housed now and asked if they

BK: Let’s talk about this “vibe”? JSP: I like the whole mid-century 60s and 70s style, so we want that feel in all of our stores, yet each one noticeably different. Our donut shops are the hippie-sittingin-the-basement feel, while one ice cream shop is a retro soda fountain and the other is a bright mid-century building. BK: And as we speak we are sitting in Hypnotic Emporium? JSP: Yep, we decided that the other thing that was missing was good old fashion ice cream and candy. So about two years ago we opened next door to the donut shop in Dallas. This May we opened another Hypnotic Emporium in Mansfield. And once again to think that after a chance meeting with Alan, and being friends with Michael, it would lead to yet another great story. Always remember: we are “driving friendships.” So if and when you meet someone, new don’t miss out on “Driving Friendships”!

Porsche Plano: 70th Anniversary Porsche Drive By Mark Palmer On Saturday, June 9, 52 beautiful Porsche vehicles lined up all the way around the dealership for our drive into northern Collin County to celebrate “Sportscar Together Day” hosted by Porsche Plano. Our day started with breakfast and a visit to the showroom and ended with a catered lunch at Noah’s Event Venue in McKinney. Following our drivers’ meeting, the Plano Police held up traffic to get all the P-cars on the road (sorry Plano residents) and we headed to the twisties. Given our very large group, we did amazingly well at staying together. Somewhere along the way a fellow P-car driver got a ticket on 121 for speeding and a warning for no front license plate -- image that! The driver will remain anonymous. Between Autobahn, Park Place, and Porsche Plano, the dealers staged on a great day of celebrating Porsche’s “70” year.

April Maverick Social: Sixty Vines By Clark Randall, Monthly Social Co-Chair

We had a fantastic turnout for our May Happy Hour and Dinner Social at Sixty Vines in Plano. Several new members attended. We got the opportunity to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Besides the incredible selection of wines on tap, we sat down to a nice dinner and good conversation. Make sure you join us on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm for our next dinner social. We will be dining at at the Ranch at Las Colinas on July 19th. Remember, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people! Below: New members Diane and Richard Trayner

Autobahn: 70th Celebration By David Robertson, Region President

photos provided by Carey Spreen, David Robertson & 360 West

Autobahn hosted their 70th celebration event away from the dealership at Heart of the Ranch at Clearfork, a great venue. The parking lot was full of Porsches from all generations and before heading towards the music emanating from the forest It was great to soak in the view. Of course, the theme of the celebration was all about Porsche. A combination of old and new were on display including one of the most beautiful 356’s I have ever seen and our own Clay and Bettie Perrine’s new (to them) 1970 914 6. There were early 911’s, to the latest model 911 GT2 RS and a 918 thrown in for good measure.

Our Past President and Autobahn Porsche Brand Ambassador, John Hamilton, kicked off the event introducing GM Zoran Gutic who appropriately started his speech in German. I am not sure what he said but it sounded like he knew what he was talking about!

Autocross Event 4: Mineral Wells Mirrorcross By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by LightSpeed Images

The morning of May 20 started out with serious whiteout thunder and lightning extreme Texas style rainstorm for all who were making the trek to Mineral Wells. Top speed on the commute was barely 50 mph, and cars were off the road everywhere. The weather prognosis was bleak, so some turned around and went home. By 9:15 it was starting to clear; we ended up being able to run the special dual course Mirrorcross event despite the P1 - 'PCA 1' Total Entries: 1

Maverick Tech Session Series: Engine Issues, Fact and Fiction By Michael Baynton, Region Tech Session Chair On Saturday, June 2, close to 60 Maverick members met at Zims Autotechnik seeking answers to the most serious of questions. Questions about leaky engines, failed bearings, dubious metallurgical decisions of the ‘70s, and other worrisome concerns that keep certain Porsche owners up at night.

session would be as productive and informative as possible, the crowd was split into air-cooled and water-cooled worriers. Al held court on one end of the shop, and was soon peppered with questions from the air-cooled contingent regarding the invariable oil leaks, soft mag cases, the dearth of quality replacement parts, and what

Fielding these questions with aplomb and a wealth of experience was Al Zim, one of the gurus of the P-car world. On the morning of this 75th birthday, no less, he graciously opened his shop doors and—along with his experienced staff of mechanics—provided advice and perspective on a number of engine-related issues. To ensure our

modern oils to use in ancient engines. On the other end of his (immaculate, by the way) facility, Jeremy lead the discussion on water-cooled engines and peripherals with the help of the other shop mechanics. The Q&A of course covered the infamous IMS and RMS issues, along with several other bugaboos of more modern Porsches.

photos by Bill Orr

As always, this event wouldn’t have been the success it was without the generous support of our host, the everincreasing participation of our members, and the tireless efforts of our volunteers, who arrive early to help with set-up and parking. Stay tuned and look out for more exciting tech sessions during the second half of 2018!

Below: Al Zim answers questions and imparts knowledge to the group.

It’s fair to say that no question was left unanswered and that our members received an impressive education, along with honest, sage, and often humorous advice. And both discussions were helped immensely by having various Porsche models up on lifts, allowing for closer inspection and discussion. Our hosts were more than gracious in allowing members to inspect the shop and the various work stations—even those that were OTP (Other Than Porsche). Yes, Zims also supports those other German luxury brands. 25

May Tour Recap: Aloha Maverick Style By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair Our third tour of the year, “Aloha Maverick Style - The Ray Roberts Lake Tour” was Saturday, May 19. When I rolled into the parking lot of Grayson College in Van Alstyne, there were already two cars eagerly waiting to get their Maverick tour fix. Soon after getting set up, the parking lot was full of friendly Porsche owners. As usual, the beginning of our tours are pretty much like our Mavs & Mochas events. Everyone catches up with their friends, and meet new members while waiting for departure. This tour was 90.4 miles and two hours of drive time. We had 87 Porsches, 153 people, and 8 juniors (under age 18). After everyone was signed in, we started the Drivers’ Briefing, explaining our rules and how we would stage to leave.

photos by author and Jim Hirsch At my group’s rest stop, I got a chance to meet Bill Beck and look at his stunning blue 1967 912 Outlaw. The engine was beautifully detailed and it had a 3-liter flat 6 out of a 911 SC, built to be a driver. I am sure everyone one is looking forward to seeing more of this car.

Our tour ended at the Hula Hut restaurant in Little Elm. I wish we had a Hula Hut for every tour we do. They really did not miss a beat. The food and service were awesome! Wake Boarders at Hydros Wake Park next door also put on a good show that could be seen from Hula Hut. Special Thanks to our tour volunteers! The Group Leaders were Derrick Tate, Tom Martin, Young Slack, Mark Palmer, Ted Martin, Mike Ferrell, Scott Garwood, Karl Poulsen, and Edward Martelle. The sign in attendants were Karl and Karen Poulsen, Ed Martelle, and Jennifer Elliott. After the briefing, we had everyone meet their group leaders to answer questions. This tour is favorite to a lot in the Dallas area because it’s easy to get to and has great turns, long straights, and great country scenery. The Vintage Group had 12 cars and the other groups averaged 9. We went through the towns of Van Alstyne, Weston, Celina, Pilot Point, Tioga, Sanger, Aubrey, Krugerville, Cross Roads, Oakpoint and Little Elm. The Porsche Plano Client Drive was also doing a drive on FM 455. Our vintage group passed them in downtown Celina going the opposite direction. I imagine the residents enjoyed seeing over 100 Porsches driving through the square! We had two rest stops on this tour so our odd groups stopped at the second rest stop while the even numbered groups stopped at the first rest stop. 29

Schnell Fest at COTA: Spring 2018 HPDE By By Jason White, Hill Country Region

The smooth, fast turns, long straights, and technical sections test your skills as a driver and bring out the very best in your Porsche. Simply an amazing experience. The facility is first-rate, and we had easy access to the garage spaces, beautiful air conditioned rooms, driver’s lounge, and ample paddock space. We even had the conveniences of an onsite tire service, as well as access to retail performance parts and accessories. I brought my family out to Schnell Fest. It’s a comfortable space for them and a great way for them to get a taste of my hobby, and even experience the track for themselves during the charity parade laps. It was a real treat to be able to park alongside strangers and quickly make new friends as well as reconnect with friends from past events. I loved talking with other passionate enthusiasts (some traveling from other states), hearing their personal stories and comparing lap times. It was such a wonderful feeling of community and camaraderie - everyone was so friendly and willing to help and offer advice (especially to new drivers like myself). Our morning driver safety meetings were informative and efficient. Our session schedule was well-executed. Driving attendees showed true sportsmanship on the track yet were competitive and spirited. Trains were almost nonexistent (which was a relief) allowing for a consistent pace for me to grow and improve my driving. In addition the instructed class time made for a terrific value. Three months ago when I was attending my first DE, I was initially concerned because I didn’t know if I was ready for an unrestricted track pace. But after proper 30 July

instruction and actively listening to my instructors, I was soon able to begin testing the limits of my car and driving it how it was intended to be driven. It felt awesome to get these results! Our PCA instructors are really special. They constantly strive to improve your driving skills while emphasizing safety. Dedicated corner workers help keep us safe. The run groups move along like a fine Swiss watch, thanks to the team of people working behind the scenes - it’s a real production. This past Schnell Fest was a scorcher, with temperatures pushing the mercury above 100 degrees, but thanks to our organizers, we were well-hydrated with endless ice cold water and tasty popsicles that they provided. My car didn’t seem to notice a difference - I shaved several seconds off of my personal best lap time and I was promoted to the next run group. To top it all off they hosted a pizza and beer social hour at the end of the day. If you have not yet attended Schnell Fest, you are in for a real treat - this multi-region event keeps attendees coming back and is so well-run. I’ve checked COTA off of my bucket list and I’m looking forward to the next exhilarating Schnell Fest this fall!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor By Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Seventy years. Wow. Celebrating 70 years of anything is no small feat these days. And doing so while still building a model that was introduced 53 years ago is kind of unheard of. Pan Am, Compaq, EF Hutton, remember them? Yeah, neither do most people. Porsche has found a way to stay relevant and still stick to the core values that make the brand what it is today. A Porsche 911 today still has roots to the car they built in 1965 that you can see in it’s design. That’s the company that builds a product that we’re passionate about. And that’s why we’ve just celebrated with them on June 9th during the Porsche Sportscar Together Day commemorating 70 years of cars that provide the ultimate sports car experience. As you look through this issue, I hope you enjoy that fantastic pictures of the cars, and what a variety of cars we have this month, but also please take a minute to notice that we have pictures of people too. Yes, there are people in some of those photos. These are the people that make our club, your club, what it is today. Without the people, these cars would just sit and look pretty. And what fun would that be?

The knowledge, experience and stories that this group can share will astound you. Have your heard Jack Griffin’s story about Le Mans? If you haven’t been to an event, come on out. July 18th the club is putting together a track day for all skill levels as MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. If you’ve never been on a track before, this is your chance to drive with an instructor and get the most out of your Porsche and maybe pick up a racing habit you didn’t know you needed. Want more? Check out Schnell Fest in September at COTA. I’ll be the slow one in the back. If a day at the track isn’t your idea of relaxation, come to one of the socials that Clark and Vanessa plan for you each month. They have really picked out some great places for these events and the company can’t be beat. You’ve already paid the price of admission – come out and enjoy some of what the Maverick Region has to offer. Oh, if you’re missing Mavs & Mochas, you’re really missing out. I’ll be back next month with an observation about something silly that you could probably live without, but until then - Enjoy the Drive!
