SPROCKETS: Hit the road! by David Robertson, Region President July is the month when many Maverick members head off to the National PCA Parade. This is a yearly event where thousands of PCA members gather together for a week of events, including driving tours, autocross, banquets, exploring the local area, and most of all, getting to know other PCA members from every part of the country. Porsche AG always has a big presence, and always unveils a special vehicle for the first time at the event. If you haven’t been to a PCA Parade you need to attend one soon! I would like to talk a little bit about one of the Maverick Region’s most prolific members, spanning just about the entire history of the club. Charlie Davis recently passed away, shortly after celebrating his 50th year as a member of the Maverick Region. During those 50 years he was President of the Maverick Region twice, Vice President twice, and Secretary twice.

Charlie has left a permanent imprint on our club, and his legacy lives on in many ways that most of us don’t even realize. Thank you, Charlie, for 50 years of volunteering your enthusiasm and time to the Maverick Region and National PCA. We will miss you. Charlie was a two-time recipient of the Selcer Award (Maverick Region’s highest recognition) and National PCA Zone Rep for four years. He served on an untold number of committees, both on a regional and national

level, and helped organize countless events. As our club photographer for many years, Charlie was at just about every event on the schedule with camera in hand. In my time as a member of the Maverick Executive Council I have had the opportunity to work with Charlie on many projects, and the honor to get to know him and his wife Teri (also a very active member of our club for many years) on a personal level.

MAV OF THE MONTH: Kurt Scaggs Kurt Scaggs joined our Maverick Region in August of 2013, along with his 1987 Guards Red 911 Carrera. He started by participating in our region driving events, and by 2016, Kurt had volunteered for a major role in the production of Slipstream and our social media sites as the event ad designer. Kurt also created many of our most iconic poster and decal designs, such as the 55th anniversary Founders’ Day event and the Mavs & Mochas logo. In April of 2018, Kurt stepped up to one of our most labor-intensive volunteer positions, that of Editor of Slipstream, and has been at the helm of each issue since then. Kurt, along with his wife Melissa and son Wilson, actively attend our region social events, while Kurt continues to participate in driving events as often as possible. Kurt expanded his classic Porsche stable about nine months ago by adding a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo to his garage. Thank you Kurt for all of the work you do each month producing Slipstream! 2 July

May Mavs & Mochas Recap by Bill Kruder, Mavs & Mochas Chair

Once again, what would a Saturday be without rain? You guessed it - it poured the entire morning. As Debi and I drove over to Fort Worth for Mavs & Mochas that morning, more than a few times we looked at each other and questioned, “what are we doing out in this?”

photos provided by Paul Moseley But let me not forget to mention the car we were celebrating this month. Frank Briggs’ 1995 Aventurine Green 993 had just rolled 200,000 miles. For those of you who don’t know the car or Frank, it’s safe to say he drives the wheels off it. I might suggest you go back and read the Coffee, Cars & Conversation article in the June issue of Slipstream (https://tinyurl.com/y6klesyf) to learn more of where this car and driver have been over the last 200,000 miles.

But as they say, the show must go on, and we knew Neiman Marcus at Shops at Clearfork were pulling out all the stops to make it an unprecedented morning! They had their entire team ready for us with plenty of fresh coffee, Bloody Marys and mimosas, and some excellent breakfast bites. And if the spread of drinks and bites was not enough, they had incredible door prizes, and several of our members went home with great gifts. Fair to say, despite the weather, no one was disappointed, with some The spread at Neiman Marcus, Shops of Clearfork 35 cars and 50 members enjoying great friendships, Lastly, a big thanks to Park Place Porsche, Neiman shopping, and wandering through one of the most Marcus, and the volunteers who made this one of the best beautiful stores in DFW. events of the year . . . despite the rain.

Snowy Road Trip in a 356 by Rose Gohlke

photo provided by author

My husband Mark and I just returned from a 1700 mile road trip in our 1964 356. Before this, the furthest we’d gone in it was about 100 miles on one of the tours with the club. This time we went to Durango, CO for a wedding, taking the scenic route the whole way. It was quite an adventure! I was thankful for the new full-sized spare that we had to use the first night. (My husband had ordered the tire and had to wait a week to receive it because of the special size that is not popular anymore.) He had never used the original jack before and it took a while to figure out how to get the car back on the ground. I was so happy that we were able to get a replacement spare the next morning at the tire store next to our hotel that just happened to have the exact same tire! It was a beautiful surprise to find ourselves in a winter wonderland on May 9 in northern New Mexico and I was appreciative of the working heater. And on the way back through Texas I was thankful for the wing window air-conditioning! Mark and Rose stop for a scenic, snowy shot in their ‘64 356.

Patriot Paws in Action! by Alan Nusbaum It’s always difficult to know how a certain event or experience will impact your life. For my son Sam and me, the Maverick Region PCA Patriot Paws visit in March became much more than a one-time event. Not really knowing what to expect when the event announcement was made, Sam and I signed up. We love dogs and we love Porsches! What we saw that day was truly amazing and inspiring. Before we left their facility, we were really excited about what we had seen, and both agreed that the Patriot Paws mission aligned with “why we do what we do” at Raytheon, where my three children and I work. Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader in the aerospace and defense industry, and one of the larger employers in North Texas. Our work helps protect and support the men and women in our U.S. military. Many of our employees are veterans, and after describing what we had seen, our veteran employee resource group shared in our excitement and was

photo provided by author a discussion with Lori, a Q&A session, a video about their prison training program, and of course, Pierce showed off his skills!

At the end of the session, I announced a $20,000 donation from my organization to Patriot Paws Service Dogs for the training of a service dog. Our goal that day had been to

The mission of Patriot Paws is to “train and provide service dogs of the highest quality at no cost to disabled American veterans” in order to “help restore their physical and emotional independence.” on board to support Patriot Paws. At our McKinney facility on May 16 we hosted Lori Stevens, the founder and executive director; Kristina Longoria, an intern trainer; and Pierce, a service dog in training at Patriot Paws. It turned out be a very special day indeed! We had a great employee turnout for the program, which included 8 July

create a better understanding of the Patriot Paws mission: why it’s so important, how it is accomplished, and what we can do to help. We think this event

was a very good first step of what we intend to be a long-term relationship. It all stemmed from our Maverick Region PCA visit in March! Thanks again to Don Sebert and all those that organized that great day in Rockwall.

On a final note: Lori announced that as a part of our donation, we too could name a service dog. The audience voted for a name from a list of Raytheon products. The winning name was . . . Maverick!

Drivers’ Education Series: Austin Schnell Fest by Craig Janssen, Chief Driving Coach The owners of more than 200 cars converged on the Circuit of The America (COTA) race track in Austin for the long weekend of June 7-9 to spend three days developing their driving skills. Known as the Austin Schnell Fest, these High Performance Driving Education (HPDE) events are a partnership between the Maverick Region PCA, Lone Star Region PCA, Hill Country Region PCA, and the Lone Star BMW club. The next Austin Schnell Fest will be held this fall in September. It was great fun as we met and made new friends and got to drive our cars in the way they were intended to perform, all while doing it on a race track designed for safety. And it was hot. Like almost record temperatures for June in Texas hot. We drank lots of water and sought

12 July

refuge between driving sessions in the plentiful air-conditioned spaces at COTA. It’s really a fantastic facility.

Stories of gifted driving and wonderful saves abounded over beer and pizza at the end of each day. In reality, we were all humbled as we realized how much there is to learn to be a good driver, and how much performance there is to be explored in our Porsche cars. An amazing weekend with incredible cars and interesting people! We hope you will join us for a future HPDE. Please check

photos provided by Renee Hayden back next month for more pictures from this event. See you at the track!

Mav Autocross Series Event 4 & Car Control Clinic by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by Robert Kirby of Lightspeed Images

Event 4 was back at the large and fast Mineral Wells Airpark site in Mineral Wells, TX. The huge helicopter training pad gives the course designers room for a fast course. Ten of the 78 cars at this event were Porsches. Class P1, the early 914 and 911 class was dominated by Carey Spreen in his Red 911SC. Ed Mayo chased him all day in his beautiful Silver 911S for second place. Sue Crimm co-drove the Red 911SC to third and Julia Underwood co-drove the Silver 911S to fourth. Amir El-Baghdaddy ran uncontested in class P2 with his 944 S2 Cabriolet. Mas Watanabe led Carolle Liu for the win in class P3. New for 2019 participant Yasha Avshalumov pulled out the win over Doug Edney in class P4, Cayman S over 996 this time. Wendy Shoffit ran uncontested in class P5 for the win.

But Yasha Avshalumov was not shaken - he went into

Remembering Myra Sutton by Carey Spreen, as told by Jerry Sutton On April 14, 2019, Myra Broussard Sutton passed away, leaving behind husband Jerry, daughter Aubrey Sutton Skinner and Aubrey’s husband Michael Skinner, and granddaughter Sutton Lee Skinner and grandson Sullivan Lloyd Skinner.

Celebrating Myra’s birthday at the Salt Lake City Parade

Jerry Sutton joined Maverick Region PCA in May 1970. He met Lafayette, Louisiana-born-and-raised Myra Broussard at a New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 1976, held by a Methodist Sunday School group. To those who knew them at the time, that fact could have been considered unexpected, given that Myra was a “Roamin’ Catholic” and Jerry was a “Whiskey-palian.” Perhaps those self-styled descriptions were what brought them together! Jerry added Myra as his affiliate PCA member upon his next membership renewal in the spring of 1977.

photos provided by Jerry Sutton and Fran Ussery Myra had come to Dallas after graduating from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a Baccalaureate degree in Music in 1971, getting her Master’s degree at SMU in 1972. Myra was not what one would call a car person at that time; when she left Louisiana, her mother gave her the family car: a 1970 Plymouth Belvedere. As it turned out, though, that car had a 440 Mopar engine, complete with six-pack, although at the time, she neither knew nor cared. In the summer of 1977, after being shown the light regarding German automotive quality, Myra decided that she needed a new car. She visited Forest Lane Porsche+Audi, where the salesman tried to convince her that an Audi Fox was a fine-driving car, but she disagreed. She also tried driving a Porsche 924, which had just been introduced in the US, but it didn’t quite fit her tall frame. She ultimately decided on a 1977 Mercedes 240D with a 4-speed manual, which is parked in their driveway to this day. At roughly the same time, Jerry decided to sell his Chevy Nova (which he had purchased after his 1970 914-6 was totaled in an accident the previous year) and bought a new BMW 320i, which (spoiler alert!) turned out to be a poor substitute for a Porsche. Anyway, Jerry and Myra attended various Maverick Region events, one of which was an autocross held at Greater Southwest Airport, where Jerry assisted with timing and scoring. As it turned out, Myra became interested in the sport, and soon heard about a gymkhana (sort of a gimmick autocross) being put on by the Mercedes-Benz club, also at Greater Southwest Airport. She promptly entered the event

Myra and Jerry in a dance competition

Parade Committee that year, organized several dance lessons for a few couples who were also on the Parade Committee, including Myra and Jerry. As the lessons went on, most of the rest of the couples dropped out, but the Suttons continued, enjoying it immensely. In fact, they joined a club for dance couples and remained active, attending and competing in several formal dance contests each year until just recently. Another of Myra’s passions was for dogs of the breed known as the American Eskimo. In about 2004, she began attending AKC dog shows, and a couple of years later

she was showing her purebred American Eskimo and winning, including Best of Show trophies. She enjoyed showing her dogs (including “Fluff” and “Sassy Cajun”) for many years afterwards. After the trip home from the 2007 Parade, Myra became extremely exhausted. By that time, they already knew that she suffered from a heart condition known as Marfan syndrome, one of the symptoms of which is mitral valve leakage. At that time she underwent surgery to have her mitral valve repaired. About a year later she was diagnosed with Liposarcoma, which, if caught early, can be successfully treated. She underwent four major surgeries since that time, in addition to radiation and chemotherapy treatments, but the disease eventually returned each time. Nevertheless, for the last ten years or so, they have always arrived early at each Parade, driving their Cayenne (with manual transmission!) and have volunteered at Check-In, during which all Parade entrants confirm that they have registered for various events. Myra and Jerry typically handed out the Parade Goodie Bags, so they got to meet just about everyone registered for each Parade. In case you’re wondering, Jerry plans to attend the Boca Raton Parade this year to once again take on the role of Concours judge. We’ll miss Myra’s ever-present smile whenever and wherever Maverick Region folks gather, and we hope that this story has helped you to know her better!

We’ll give you an assist on your future goals.

Maverick Marktpreis: 964 Carrera 2by Peter Wen A new flat-six engine. Coil spring suspension. Power steering. Air conditioning. Automatic electric rear spoiler. This standard equipment list reads like it belongs to a late model Porsche, right? Well, actually, it’s from a 30-year-old 911, aka the 964. When the 964 was introduced in 1989, it marked the end of production on the original 911 platform. With airbags and anti-lock brakes, the 911 had finally entered the modern age. According to Porsche, the 964 contained 85% new parts compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2. Torsion bar suspension was replaced with high performance coil

springs and shock absorbers. There were many firsts offered in a 964, including all-wheel drive and automatic transmission. With its improved aerodynamics and the new 3.6L 247-bhp flat-six engine, the 964 can spring 0-60 in a very respectable 5.2 seconds. It was available in the Coupé, Targa, and Cabriolet body designs. With less than 37,000 produced, there are fewer 964 911s than the second-gen G-body series that before it and the 993-gen that came after it. Limited editions such as the ’92-’93 America Roadster, ’93-’94 Speedster, and the ’93 RS America are highly valued collectibles.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder I must be honest: I almost missed the opportunity to meet this couple. I have said hello to them more than once, usually at Mayo Performance, admiring one of their 914s and moving on. I think it was at a Mavs & Mochas that Linda Bambina, yes that Linda, came rushing up and gave me a hug and said “you have got to talk to this couple that own a few 914s.” She went on about all the fun they have had, and the stories they could tell . . . all about or involving owning 914s.

photos provided by author car out. I was hoping he would go away actually (laughing), as I was really nervous about the day. CP: It’s true - I gave her my number. BP: And yes, I called him (smiling). CP: We dated for about three years, kind of long distance, as I lived in Bedford and Betty was living in Plano. It was over a 40-mile commute, and let me tell you, in the mid ‘80s the roads were not what

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you: Betty and Clay Perrine, members since 2002, Owners 1974 914, 1973 914, and 1970 914/6 (Factory Six) Bill Kruder: So where are you two from? book called “The Red Car.” It was about a sixteen-year-old boy who finds a 1948 red MG TC roadster that is wrecked and decides he needs to bring it back to life. Guess that kind of stuck with me so I went looking for an MG. BK: So you started with a MG? BP: Well no, I had found one, but when I got there it was gone. The next place I tried, a guy showed me this orange 914 he had. Well my first impression was “heck no, I don’t even like orange cars” and I didn’t even really know much about 914s. So he tells me to sit in and take it out. Well I did, and made a right turn out of the lot; I knew right then I had to have it! One right turn and 34 years later, I still love it. BK: Clay, how did you get started? CP: Certainly, it was by chance. I grew up around old classic Chevys; matter of fact I drove a 1931 Chevy to my high school prom. One day I was at a friend’s, and in his parking lot there was 924. I was kind of looking for a car and thought it would be cool to own a Porsche. This was, I think, in 1985. BK: I understand you name your cars? BP: It’s true! Not only do we name them but they have a theme. CP: We always loved the movie “Young Frankenstein,” or as Gene Wilder would always say, “Fronkonsteen,” so we named them: the ‘74 is Froderick or Frody, the ‘73 is Igor (pronounced EYE-gor), and our ‘95 BMW is Inga. BP: The exception is our ’70, which is Elwood, because he was named before he became ours.

BK: I have heard that you have a couple stories that involve bringing the 914 community together to make someone’s day a bit brighter? CP: True enough; we believe in paying it forward or treating someone like how you would like to be treated. When we were starting out, people helped us out, and now it’s our turn; we have bins and shelves of 914 parts that we may never use. BP: So back in ‘95-’96, Clay was actively on Rennlist; when it started it was more of just sending emails. This guy “Mike” emailed, saying he once had a white 914 and missed it dearly but was not in a position to buy one again. CP: Well as luck would have it, we found a white ‘75 for $300. Let’s just say it needed work, but actually was a pretty sound car. So we bought the car and started to email on Rennlist what parts we needed, and people started sending parts to us. BP: Clay had the idea that we should save the return address stickers and attach them under the hood so that “Mike” could see how many people were involved in this six-month restoration project. CP: We had kept “Mike’s” wife in the loop of what we were doing, so when we wrapped up the project, we loaded the ‘75 on a trailer to Tennessee. BK: And the other? CP: We always call this one the story of “Buttercup.” BP: Thru 914world.com a woman had posted that she had a 914 that was in pieces; it was her brother’s, who

had recently passed away. CP: Aftering hearing the story, a bunch of us 914 guys got together, donated parts, and we all flew or drove to Kansas and over a weekend we reassembled and had the car roadworthy once again. BK: Tell me about the ‘74, what is known to us as, the “incident”? CP: Ahh yes, that would be the day I was driving, and Betty was the passenger. We were driving on 360 in Arlington when she looked back and saw that the car was on fire! BP: We managed to pull over safely; the Fire Department extinguished the car before it was completely destroyed. CP: We had it towed away and it sat in storage for seven years before we ever got around to bringing it back to life. BK: And for the record this is the car they drove to meet me for this conversation! Truly a classic, patina and all. So . . . as I always say, what if? I could have missed this couple, but thanks to Linda’s nudge, we captured their story. And how fitting - it’s a story of 914 ownership as we celebrate its 50th anniversary. I will say this is a story of driving friendships.

It’s New Car Time: Part 1 by Robert Turner It’s new car time in the Turner household. Yes! To be frank, I’m always car shopping. It’s kind of a hobby, you know – of the vocational kind. Meaning that if the right combination of timing, available budget, and spousal approval all happen to coincide, then a car purchase is eminent. Take this most recent round. It started a little over a year ago. My race car was on the chopping block. First there was a brush with the Armco crash barrier at a COTA race track (Circuit of the Americas; FYI, the Austin TX track that hosts the US Formula 1 Grand Prix). Then there was the motor meltdown at Hallett’s great regional track in OK. I had the car body refreshed and found a new racing motor. But after that expense, my long-suffering wife instructed me to cut my losses and retire from track events. OK. Sold the race car, sold the trailer and most of the racing equipment. On my birthday, no less. As the race car disappeared down the road, heading to its new home in south Florida, my wife turned to me and said, “This is the best birthday ever!” Wait, our birthdays are three months apart! Oh, right. She meant it was the best birthday she’d ever celebrated with me, the former race car/track event aficionado. She did take me out for a nice birthday dinner. I remember consuming several decent bourbons to drown the sorrow of being out of the race car/track event business. But really, after seventeen years, it was time to cut my losses and move on. Then, about the third bourbon I said,

“Maybe I should add up all I’ve spent on track cars over the years.” My lovely wife put her hand on my arm and said, “Maybe you shouldn’t.” “OK,” I agreed through the bourbon buzz. But I get ahead of myself. In anticipation of selling the race car, I managed to score a very nice 2002 Boxster S in my favorite Porsche color: Speed Yellow. This was my second Speed Yellow Boxster S. The first one? Another story. The new one had low miles and rare options: M030 sports suspension, factory Speedhumps and factory-painted center console in Speed Yellow. It was a keeper. But anyone who really knows me understands that no car is ever a keeper. It’s potentially always on the chopping block – waiting to get kicked to the curb in favor of something newer or better. 26 July

I did briefly think this one was different. It was more-or-less perfect. Rare options combined with low mileage and amazing paint and bodywork meant that this car (which we dubbed Lemonhead or LMNHED on the PCA license plate), was destined for concours and touring duty. It placed third in a regional concours and was an amazing companion when we drove to PCA Palooza. Yep, LMNHED was gonna hang around the Turner household for a long time. The purchase happened during the Christmas holiday season when I was homebound for several weeks. My usual work mode involves lots of business travel, sometimes four to six weeks in a row. Very small joke: when people ask me where I’m based, I point to the sky and say, “On an American Airlines flight flying overhead right now!” My wife knows I’m dangerous when not traveling. It means I have more time in the evening to spend on, you guessed it – car shopping! And so it happened. I frequently use an app to search Craigslist nationwide. I use it to look for something uncommon – like a Speed Yellow Boxster S. Which is how I found LMNHED. I reached out to the owner, who lived in Phoenix, maybe an hour after he’d posted it. He was surprised to receive a response so quickly. The photos were not very good, so I asked him for some specific shots to help me make sure this really was a rare car in great condition. I asked for shots of the wheels, the sticker under the hood, certain interior shots, and both the front and back of the title. I looked at the photos when they came in, as well as CarFax and the factory build sheet. The car was a gem. I called him back and asked if he’d take a lower price, but he was firm. Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I told him I’d FedEx a check for half the agreed price to hold the car and I’d bring the balance when I flew into Phoenix to pick it up. I asked him to take the ad down from Craigslist. When I picked the car up, he told me he should have charged more. In the couple of hours the ad was still active, he got maybe six or seven calls. Yep, he probably could have asked for more and got it. But he was a man of his word. I picked the car up in Phoenix, pointed it east and drove home. I’ve had the car for a year now and am home from the road again. Believe it or not, I’m looking for cars. Some things never change.

Surprise!: A Summer Gimmick/Poker Rally by Jay Lynch The objective of a rally is to follow a course from point to point, usually on public roads, to the precise detail specified in the rules – an opportunity for Driver and Navigator to share the motoring experience. Rallies can be competitive (time-speed-distance), dictating a certain time schedule for checkpoints along the way, or Gimmick, which are not timed, may include a theme, and may require other skills such as solving a puzzle or looking for obscure reference points. As with any Rally the challenge is to discover and enjoy the intended country drive. For the July 27th Rally starting at Grapevine Porsche, your Rallymeisters have added a series of 5 check points where participants will draw playing cards to create a poker hand. At the finish, where food and beverages are available, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be given based upon the team’s ability to complete the route, answer questions correctly and identify objects. Plus a special award will be given for the winning poker hand. The Rally Co-Chairs are Don Sebert and George Luxbacher. You can contact them at rally@mavpca.org Registration opens July 1st.

Best thing about Porsche ownership

As a teenager in Chicago, I fell in love with Porsches. It was a Guard Red 911 Targa, that’s the one. I have owned my 911 Carrera Targa for over 30 years. It still gets thumbs up every drive.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Tangent alert. If you came here for a pithy rebuke of electric cars, or a semi-relatable story about shade tree auto mechanics, I have some sad news for you. If instead, you are reading this because you are the type that reads magazines cover to cover and you do the honorable thing and read the musings printed here in spite of my attempts at above, thank you in advance. In light of the joker that was named Mav of the Month, I feel the need to applaud those that really help keep this publication in your mailboxes. I am incredibly grateful for our board members and volunteers. I compelled to tell you about a few of them and ask for your help. First and foremost, Carey Spreen keeps me honest and does the proof reading, grammar and editing of the stories. Without his help, you’d get your copy of Slipstream on the 29th of the month. A former editor himself, he is an invaluable resource that I could not do without. I cannot say thank you enough Carey. You’ll most likely recognize Bill Kruder from planning, running or sometimes just enjoying our many great events. He’s everywhere, usually with a cigar and a big floppy hat.

But he’s also a monthly contributor taking time each month to get to know our members and tell their story. If you’ve ever spoken to him, you’ll know why he’s tailor made for this type of thing. Thanks Bill! If you enjoy Maverick Marktpreis, please let Peter Wen know about it. I know I always look forward to seeing what model he’s highlighting for the coming month and keeping my collector mind racing. Peter, my wife thanks you too. David Tierney is our ad designer and he is responsible for the wonderful club ads that you see each month in Slipstream and on the web keeping us all informed about the upcoming events with style. Thanks David! We’ve got so many great photographers and contributors that I almost never run out of things to bring you each month. Almost. Now for the telethon moment. If you’ve taken a drive, trip or ill-fated stab at refreshing your ride and think others might enjoy hearing about it, I’ve got a tip for you. They would. Or if you’ve been shooting photos at an event or just like taking pictures in your driveway and are particularly proud of some of them, sent them in. I know I would love to hear about a garage story gone right for a change. Enjoy the drive.
