The Inside Track by Russ Johnson, the Maverick Region President’s Son

I

’m not what you’d call a “car person.” The perennial “wash me” sign scrawled across my back windshield in road dust will testify to that. And furthermore, while my Toyota Tercel gets high marks in the areas of gas mileage and general dependability, no one would confuse it with a high performance automobile. So when I signed up for February’s Autocross 101 class, I knew I’d be driving way above my pay grade. I decided to attend the class on the invitation of Maverick Club member Rocky Johnson. At present, some of you know Rocky as Mr. President, but based on 36 years of habit, I refer to him more frequently as Dad. President Dad began racing competitively some years back, at which point driving quickly shot to the top of his list of extreme hobbies (much to my mother’s enduring chagrin). To facilitate my participation, Rocky handed over the keys of his extremely well-maintained Porsche 968. Based on my car experiences up to that point, it was sort of like trading in a Big Wheel for a Suzuki Samurai. Not knowing what to expect, I decided to approach the class with cold, journalistic objectivity. I would quietly interject myself into this foreign world, and uncover the addictive fascination behind the sport of auto racing. What could be so thrilling that grown men and women would leave the relative safety and comfort of the Tollway to annihilate perfectly good brake pads driving around in circles in Bedford? This was my mission.

Having had such a positive experience with Autocross 101, I decided advancing to the Time Trial class was the next logical step. Even my grasp on the lingo was improving. During registration, when an admiring passerby asked, “what’cha got under the hood there… 240 bhp or the 350 bhp turbo?” I was able to confidently reply, “350, 360, whatever it takes.” At this point, my street cred was clearly above question. If Autocross was a rush, Time Trial was the whole stampede. With nothing but wide-open space, I was finally able to get beyond all the rules and conventions drilled into us from the time of high school drivers ed and really enjoy the experience of performance driving. Immersing myself further into the driving culture, I began to obsess over minutia, and the details of technique. Should I employ a basic turn, or a late apex turn. Was I better served driving “Shifty-Hand,” or adopting the “Zaccone Method.” Before my premature concerns spiraled out of hand, my instructor framed things in a distinctly straight forward, easy to understand way. “Pick your course,” he said. “Brake early, and get back on the throttle fast.” And he was right. Certainly there are volumes of learning, technique, trial and error, and most importantly a lot more “seat-time” involved in becoming a competitive club racer. But this was a great beginning, in a wholly supportive atmosphere, that could potentially lead to a very difficult conversation with my wife. “Hey honey, wouldn’t it be great to trade in the old Tercel for… gee, I don’t know… a manual 911 turbo 3.6. After all, it does have 4500 Nm of torque.”

. . .if Autocross was a rush, Time Trial was the whole stampede . . .

During the registration and orientation portion of the morning, the air was abuzz with car talk. People snaked through the crowds of drivers and vehicles, pontificating on matters of horse power, drive train, and turbo charging. As I leaned against Rocky’s 968 trying desperately to appear well informed, someone approached me and solicited my opinion on the car’s hydraulic dual system vented disk ABS braking. Bear in mind that up to this point, the only thing of substance I really knew about my father’s car was that it didn’t have a CD player and the 5-point seatbelt tended to bind in the crotch. “Oh yeah, it’s like… totally awesome.” I replied. My cover was safe, at least for the moment. First came the braking exercise. Still trying to maintain my Cronkite-like detachment, I was surprised at how much adrenaline was generated by just driving at speed in a straight line for a handful of seconds. While training at the skid pad, I became less concerned with providing a journalistic account of my experience, than avoiding being saddled with a deprecating nickname (such as “pokey”, or perhaps, the “cone-mangler”). By the time I reached the slalom exercise, my clinical impartiality had been replaced by abject excitement, and the absolute need to just go “one more time.” Russ Johnson at Time Trial 103. 5

Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield

B

oardwalk Porsche hosted the May 2005 Maverick Region Board Meeting on Monday, May 2, 2005. The meeting had the following 15 members in attendance: Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, Mark Gluck, Jeff Atkins, Michael Wingfield; Board Members: Mike Brodigan, Bill Dawson, Lanean Hughes, Chuck Machalla, Joel Nannis; General Membership: Tinker Edwards, Kevin Hardison, Ed Hughes, Jan Mayo, and Khalid & Sherry Zafar. Rocky Johnson (RJ) called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM. However, rather than have a ‘round table discussion as in the past, RJ had an agenda for this meeting. Club Race: RJ-PCA Club Racing provided $1,000 to Maverick Region from the PCA Club Racing National Sponsors as sponsorship for the May Club Race. Lanean said we have received $12,850 from local sponsors for the May Club Race + DE. Club Race currently has 28 entries. Break even point is 36 racers. Expects a field of 60-70 racers. May @ Mayo’s: Jan - May @ Mayo’s set for Saturday (5/7), the day before Mother’s Day, and begins at 6:30 PM. Currently 75 persons registered at $15/person, expects to have 100 in attendance. AX/TT: Chuck Machala - TT#1 had 35 entrants and AX#2 had 56 entrants. Collected $1740 in entry fees, but still need to pay expenses. Next AX/TT event is in two weeks, May 14-15. RJ-(Acting as Bill Miller)-Suggests the region keep the AX radios rather than sell (see April minutes), and use the radios for non-critical nets at the Club Race. AX/TT Committee will hand off the radios to the Club Race Committee for use at the May Club Race. Club Race Committee will determine if the radios work in non-critical functions of the Club Race. If not, the radios may again go up for sale to the membership. AX wants to replace the failed AX radios (now Club Race radios). Ray Luedecke is researching and has located a vendor that will provide two radios for a FREE field test at the next AX/TT, May 14-15. Maverick Region was contacted by Greg Lee who does maintenance at the Mineral Wells Mineralring (MWM). He would like financial support and physical help in maintaining MWM. He presented a proposal that all clubs using MWM pay a portion of the maintenance fees based on usage/event days. Usage days presented includes (days/year): Maverick Region-12, BMW-11, S2000-7, ER-5. Thus, Maverick Region would be responsible for 34% of the MWM maintenance cost. No action taken until he presents actual costs or estimated costs for maintenance. Father’s Day Picnic: RJ-Wendy Shoffit will coordinate food and collect RSVP’s for the Father’s Day picnic. Joel Nannis will handle awards and expects award cost of $50, with actual costs presented at the next board meeting. Driver’s Education: Bill Dawson- Maverick Region supported the BMWCCA CR/DE this past weekend with administrative, track, and instructor staff. Participating in the DE was Lori Mauth, daughter of Peter Shutz. {Secretary Addendum-Peter Shutz was President & CEO of Porsche AG from 1981-1988. He engineered the biggest positive financial turn around in Porsche sales history. He also authored the book, The Driving Force: Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People. (Published: 2003 by Entrepreneur Press, Inc. ISBN: 1932156119)} Jan-Spoke with Lori at the BMW DE and Lori indicated that her “Dad” Peter Shutz would like to participate in a Maverick Region meeting, speaking engagement, or book signing. Peter is a former Parade attendee and promoter of the 944/951 product line. She will investigate having Peter come and speak at a future event, possibly Founder’s Day or a special fall dinner meeting. 8

Michael Wingfield-May DE is sold out, and has a waiting list. We collected the final entry spots as a direct result of Maverick Region participation in the BMWCCA DE. May DE entry fees turned over the Jeff. RJ-Reminds the DE Committee to create two DE awards to present at Founder’s Day. Also asks that the DE Committee investigate holding a Clockwise DE at MSR. To date, all Maverick Region DE events at MSR have run in the counter-clockwise direction. Event Insurance: Mark Gluck-All insurance is current for May events. We have two “cars in motion” events scheduled for June that will require insurance. Treasury: Jeff Atkins-Presented the quarterly financial statement. RJ asks that we publish the current quarterly statement in SS. Membership: Joel Nannis- Maverick Region currently has 1,167 members. Slipstream Advertising: Mike Brodigan- Sending SS advertising invoices in July. Will look for replacement ads to fill lost advertisers not included in renewals. October ends the advertising year, and need 90 days notice to make changes to advertising rates. Slipstream Publication: Kevin Hardison- Wants to increase the page count in SS from 32 to 36 pages to allow for more article space. Would like to redefine and decrease the number of full page advertisers in SS. Asks for a volunteer from the club membership to take of the position of “Production Editor.” May SS completed publication and is on the way to the mail house. Deadline for SS article submission is the 10th of the month prior to the month of publication. RJ-Would like SS to publish a survey of the members asking what the membership wants to see in SS. Also requests that Chairs and Board members write pre-event articles rather than just advertisements for the upcoming events. RJ would also like Chairs and Board members to be responsible for getting post-event articles and photos to the SS production staff. Hope Shelter: Lanean Hughes- Hope Shelter sent a Thank You letter for the $10,000 gift last month, and will put the letter in SS. Presented photos of the current building, and the lot for the new building. Notes that the city of Mineral Wells will allow the construction hook-ups without charge. Happy Hour: RJ-(Acting as Dennis Chamberlain)-HH @ Bavarian Grill had 52 attendees, with 7 new members. Next HH, 5/19 at Hunan Dynasty with BYOB. DC is working on a new ad and poster for the Hope Project. Miscellaneous: RJ-Wants to know what expenses and the limits on expenses that can be approved without board approval. Do the By Laws address this issue? Executive Council will review the By Laws and make recommendations to the Board as necessary. JM will locate the most current copy of the By Laws and present to the Executive Council. Mike Brodigan - In the interim, during the By Laws research, makes a motion to allow the President to singularly authorize up to $500 in expenditures, without board approval, for expenses presented by individual members, or expenses outside normal committee or event expenses. Joel seconds. Motion carries. RJ will host the June Board meeting, and Lanean will host the July Board meeting. The May meeting adjourned at 8:17 PM

Happy Hour at The Bavarian Grill by Dennis Chamberlain

W

e had one of our largest turnouts of new members ever at the Bavarian Grill happy hour on April 21, including Karen and Scott Taylor, Ray Bilbao, Tom Singer and Frank Valazquez, Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Monda who had just arrived from Orlando, Degan and Mike Lockas and Tom Leavitt, who recently transferred from the Roadrunner Region in Albuquerque, NM. As it turned out, Albuquerque was the unlikely subject of several discussions with members that night, including an amazing Porsche service story that Michael and Marie Wingfield told me. The irony is that I’m heading for Albuquerque on May 20 to visit with Pat Blackwell, a Roadrunner member who is going to help us scope out the real estate for future retirement considerations. It turns out Pat sold Tom Singer his house in Albuquerque. After having to include Albuquerque four times for this article, I’m actually learning to spell it.

Speaking of ironies, we’ll be heading back to Mondo’s for the June 16 happy hour, at the suggestion of Monda (not Mondo) Degan. It was a past favorite that was always a hit. Hope to see you there.

Passion and Performance by Mike Holloway, Slipstream Managing Editor Each month, Passion and Performance highlights someone in the Porsche community that stands out. This month, the Passion and Performance section considers the HOPE Shelter and the HOPE Shelter champion Lanean Hughes. The following is an article writen by Lanean Hughes. Lanean exemplifies passion and performance in many things, the HOPE Shelter is one.

HOPE “A Place For New Beginnings” by Lanean Hughes Maverick Region is taking on an incredible project and we want YOU, the members, to be part of this. A group of dedicated members met and thought about the possibility of building a new shelter for Hope. The current facility is a 100-year-old house. Much discussion went on about the amount of work that would go into repairing the house, dealing with its location on a flood plane, and thinking of the amount of paperwork required to make it safe for the clients. All that work to still end up with an old house. The thought came about that a new 4,500-5,000 sq. ft. facility would be a wonderful gift to the staff and clients of Hope. Ground has already been purchased by Hope, Inc. and several professional individuals have offered to get this project started. We will soon be on the way to putting up walls, etc. We need your support, physically, emotionally, and financially. Below is a history on Hope with some statistics, detailing Maverick Region’s role with this charity to date. We hope this will help you understand our dedication to this awesome project and encourage you to want to be part of it. In 1993 Maverick Region was introduced to Hope, Inc., a home for victims of domestic violence. As the years have passed, our support has continued and, eventually, Hope became our “Perpetual Charity.” There are many other organizations that need support and we are certainly aware of that, but we can’t help them all. The people of Hope became friends to many of us. We have “adopted” a few families for short periods of time and have even visited their homes. We shared in their pain along with their rise to becoming better people and productive citizens. We saw them teach their children how to have “a good/safe life.” Hope, Inc. is dedicated to that support, and with the assistance of Maverick Region over the years has continued to provide the following: 24-Hour Hotline - Counseling Program- Emergency ShelterVolunteer Program Community Awareness Hope, Inc began in 1983 as a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board and is staffed with trained personnel. Their support is from a few government grants (our in-kind donations also contribute to this), United Way, Personal donations, and Maverick Region. They proudly serve the people in 4 counties (Palo Pinto, Parker, Erath, and Hood). Although many times they are asked to shelter victims from Dallas, Fort Worth, and even surrounding states. 10

Here are some Family Violence Facts: 1. A woman is battered every 12 seconds 2. Women are six times more likely than men to experience violence committed by an intimate partner 3. An average of seven women die every day at the hands of their partner 4. Battering causes more injury to women than auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined. Here are some Hope, Inc. statistics, based on 2004, that we feel are beneficial to our part in this worthy cause. Sheltered in 2004; 203 Women and Children, Non-Resident Assistance 653 Women, Men, Children Food, utility & rental fees, counseling, parenting, Anger Management classes, Protective Orders, and anything they may have needed relating to domestic violence or sexual assault. “Hope, Inc exists to eliminate domestic violence through intervention, offering shelter, counseling, support and education to promote the healing of abusive relationships”. Maverick Region Porsche Club should want to continue assisting Hope with that mission. Maverick Region contributions have exceeded any other organization supporting Hope in the last 10 years. Let’s keep up the good work!!

Time Trial & Autocross - Go Speed Racer, Go!!! By Racer X and Trixie (AKA Marc Thaler) manage to get lost their first time out. <Backing up – Bonnie has come out to two other Autocrosses with me and worked each one. I thought I would owe her “big time” for spending the day chasing cones, etc. (think dinners and diamonds again), but she had a good time and enjoyed meeting everyone. She either chased cones or did the scoring, so she was starting to get the feel of things.)

O

K, enough with the “Speed Racer” references, but as anyone who knows me knows– RacerX is my alter-ego, and Trixie would be my nickname for my wife. This was my first Time Trial and Bonnie’s first Autocross. (Yes, I actually coaxed my wife into driving. Expensive dinners and diamonds were involved … and to tell you the truth .. she had a BLAST.) Much of the credit goes to Mrs. Wendy Shoffit – her most capable instructor. Bonnie brought her time down something like 34 seconds, and she gained confidence with each run. I think she had more confidence in her abilities than my car. It seems my car has earned the nickname M.P. (for “Money Pit”) as things are continually going out. Oh well, the joys of owning a 15 year old…. Cars, kids, they’re all the same!

This was my first Time Trial, so I was looking forward to a little more speed. Mike Lockas has instructed me several times and I always appreciate his help and advice. We walked the course, and he gave me the correct line and little details that might help me improve my time. After my previous debacle at the AX/TT school (ask me about the $ 3800 in repairs and another $ 800 for rubber), the car was now running great and I was feeling confident. New tires = traction. Motor mounts = an engine that wasn’t trying to fly out the hood. Then I hit the course. No dice. I wasn’t impressed with my morning runs, and everyone was commenting that the course was slower than previous events. Air temperature? Track temperature? Different equipment? So I asked Mike to instruct me,and my times came down. Imagine that! I’ve decided that everyone first comes to the track thinking they’re Mario Andretti. “I know how to drive a car and I’m going to show’em all how! I OWN the road.” How quickly reality sets in! How many things could I possibly be doing wrong? Between Rocky slapping my hand telling me to “get my damn hand off the stick and put it on the wheel” to Mike screaming “Get your damn foot out of the clutch!”and “Brake, BRAKE!!!), you start to realize a Formula One driver you’re not! But at the same time, all of this has been ENORMOUSLY helpful, and you start to realize all the bad habits you’ve picked up from daily driving in traffic.

Wendy Shoffit driving and pointing out the perfect line for “Trixie.”

Got to the track by around 7:45, and there was already a crowd of drivers milling around, prepping cars, etc. The morning was classic Mineral Wells – very cool and windy. Got tech’d, signed in and it was off to walk the course. I’ve learned (and learned quickly) that walking the coarse is a NECESSITY (especially when Chuck is the designer …) and even if, quite a few driver’s will

This weekend was no different than my previous experiences in going to Mineral Wells. Up before the sun, packing, car loaded, coffee run and it’s on the road. This time I remembered my helmet and a slew of other items I managed to leave behind the Autocross before. Traffic on the way out was rather light, but the construction on 30 is brutal with the surface changes (I bottomed my car out twice), and the police presence was more evident than usual. Saw several Porsches on the way there – wondered if they were going to join in the fun.

Bill MIller “dancing” his way around a corner.

Gabby Garner is fast no matter which Subaru he drives! 14

The day was a success. The weather warmed up and there were no major calamities. Mark Steele, Chuck Machala, and Rocky Johnson continued to battle it out. I continue to be impressed with their cars and driving abilities. Mike Lockas can DRIVE a car, and continues to show me the proper way to drive mine. Shelly Burbank tore up the track (and her car, as repairs had to be made that night and next morning. Thanks to all that pitched in.) Rick Randall and Bill Miller were hot and heavy, with both doing their best attempt at three-wheeling. And yes, once again – the TTOD went to Gabby Garner in his dominating Subaru WRX STi. (You know, being a Porschephile - it’s truly painful to say that. But the Suby’s are amazing cars, and if they weren’t so ugly I might actually buy one.) In the mean time, the “Pray for Rain” guys will continue to clean up at the track.

We broke down the TT course and set up the Autocross course. At that point , we’re all wiped out, it’s time to leave and guess what? My car is DEAD. First we thought it might be the battery, but no luck. Then I thought maybe somebody hit the wrong combination of buttons on my remote and the alarm coded the engine out. 20 min. on the phone with the alarm company – still no dice. Finally we figured out it was the starter, and managed to push start the car. At least we knew it would run. Slunk back to the hotel to mope. Dinner that night at Baris Restaurant was great , and fun was had by all. Bonnie and I ended up with a Suite at the Best Western, so after dinner we ended up soaking in the hottub in the room and passing out. Thanks for Rocky for playing chauffeur and carting us around.I did have the honor or driving Rocky’s 968 to the track the next morning. Now I have a better idea of what type of car I need to build! Got to the track early and it was Ed Mayo to the rescue! (THANKS, ED!) It seems my starter wire had worked it’s way loose. Hit the auto parts store later that day (after rigging it in the AM.) and she was all fixed up! The

Autocross the next day was more of the same. The weather was warmer with very little wind, and the rain held off until the very last few runs. The guys in the 914’s (Cody Sears and Ed Mayo among others) continue to impress me. There was also quite an assortment of other cars out at the track: Several Camaro’s and a Firebird, a Mustang or two, several M3’s and MR2’s, and lo and behold – Dean Yamada throwing a brand new Infiniti Q45 around like a sports car. Several drivers made scenes with spins, slides and cones flying in all directions. All in all – another great day with a great bunch of people. I want to thank a few folks, and if I’ve left you out – well, I apologize in advance. Much thanks goes out to all the folks that help put these events on and make our region so successful. James and Wendy Shoffit – what great people they are for all that they do! Kevin Hardison and Charlie Davis for photos, etc. Rick Randall for Tech inspections. Bill Miller and Chuck Machala for designing courses (great job Chuck on the Sunday AX course!) Ed and Jan Mayo, Mick Lockas, Rocky Johnson, and all the instructors. See you all in June in Mineral Wells!

Club Race Corner By Doug Molny

The Lone Star Chapter of the BMW Club invited us to participate in their annual Club Race at Motorsport Ranch. We had 12 Maverick Porsches show up, which I believe is a record attendance for us at their race. We also provided instructors for their DE group. Yours truly got to drive a 1966 Mustang GT Fastback with 275 HP, stiffer suspension, headers, and better brakes. Ford was really after the Corvette market! My student was thrilled to try out his 39-year-old car at this track. It really brought back some great memories of drag racing down Forest Lane in Dallas circa 1969!

O

ur Maverick Region Club Race drivers enjoyed another great weekend at Motorsport Ranch on April 30th through May 1st. It turned out to be a perfect tune-up for the upcoming PCA Club Race there at the end of May. Our club will be hosting this event on Memorial Day weekend. As usual, it will be something that, by the time you read this, I hope you did not miss. This race facility will provide some very tight racing and every pass will be exciting on this highly technical track!

Jim Buckley leading Barry Moore through Rattlesnake. The BMW race turned out to be another safe and exciting event with one 30-minute sprint race and one 1-hour enduro race including a 5-minute pit stop. Barry Moore turned a red hot 1:19 in his cup car, Jim Buckley turned a 1:20 in his RS America and Jay Walker turned a 1:21 in his new cup car which was the first time he had ever driven it! These times and all others can be viewed at mylaps.com or on the National PCA web site. Just click on ‘club race’.

. . . drag racing down Forest Lane in Dallas . . . A discussion about turning fast times would be incomplete with out the mention of tires. Toyos, Michelins, and Hoosiers seemed to be the tires to run for the weekend. We find that Toyos work well as a tire for the enduro as they tend to last longer and do not get as “greasy” as some of the other softer compound tires. Hoosiers seemed to be very fast and many drivers used them for qualifying and sprint racing. There have been many articles and books written on tires and (believe it or not) the topic of racing tires is a very technical subject. For some basic information about tires and racing, I have found some very informative articles at the following web sites: www.hoosiertires.com, www.tirerack.com, and Bryan Redmond’s web site at Http://phors.locost7.info/contents.htm also try www.rennlist.com. You will find these sites cover tires, racing, and many other aspects of high speed driving techniques. If you would like to purchase a book dedicated to tires only I have found one that you would certainly enjoy, “The Racing and High Performance Tire,” by Paul Haney.

Bryan Henderson fighting to stay ahead of the “traffic jam.” The racing was very close with the BMW drivers. They have only one run group for the racers, resulting in 29 race cars on the track at the same time. “Traffic management” (as one of our drivers Steve Watkins pointed out) was of primary importance, especially with several cars frequently lapping the slower cars.

We experienced great weather and fast lap times in the 1:19 to 1:21 range from our quicker Porsche drivers. I believe that with these kinds of times at our home track we should expect many of our Maverick drivers on the podium for our May Club Race.

Jay Walker, Noby Takahashi and Joe McGlohen enjoyng the racing. 16

Bluebonnet/Hill Counrty Tour e gathered at the quaint old Courthouse in Hillsboro where we were met by first time tourers Phil Childrey, Bryan & Joy Corbell and Troy & Debbie Stephen. After receiving our packets of information giving us each day’s tour stops, maps, menus and some local history, we had a brief meeting with tour guides Ted Glover and Andy Miller. Then it was time to hit the roads.

and removed from the license plate.

One of our stops was at Garven Store in Mountain Home, one of the oldest remaining convenient stores in Texas. They have made some new improvements since we were last there. They had new restrooms and thatched roofs over the tables for shade. Although we heard the peacocks around, we never saw them. Then it was on to Coopers BBQ in Llano for lunch. Each year is a challenge at Coopers due to their popularity. This year we managed to get there ahead of all the Harley Davidson bikers that also tour the Hill Country.

Then it was back to the Inn to again wash and gas the cars and rest up for dinner in Kerrville at the Y. O. Ranch Resort Hotel, where we encountered an artisan selling her one-of-a-kind jewelry. The final day had 75% newly-found road additions to the Hill Country Tour. We ended up in Hico to have some great pies at the Koffee Kup and to say our goodbyes, but had to settle for some great chocolate across the road as "The Kup" runnith over with townspeople and our Harley friends. Come join us next time!

Next it was on to the Willow City Loop to see all the wildflowers and bluebonnets. Sadly, this year we were either too early or too late depending on whom you asked, as there were next to none to be seen. We went on to Fredericksburg where some of our tour stayed to shop, tour the Admiral Nimitz Museum (which was great), or headed on to The Haven River Inn to wash and gas the cars and rest up for our dinner and lodging there for the night. After breakfast at the Inn James Dean (yes, the movie star) joined Andy and Cindy Miller for a great ride of winding, curvy, and hilly roads until James was James Dean made part of the trip. discovered at our next rest stop

Lunch (a lot of lunch) was at House Pasture Cattle Co. and a little later we had dessert at Love Creek Orchards in Medina, "The Apple Capital of Texas, where you can have apple pie, apple cobbler, apple bread, apple ice cream and can purchase anything apple including trees, cookbooks, preserves and much more.

Halftime for My Carrera Part III by Ed Hughes With a little more jacking up of the ATV jack, and the front of the car, it went into place fairly easily. After replacing to mount bolts, it’s time to re-connect all of the wires and hoses, CV joints and clutch cable. I also replaced the clutch cable while the motor was out, which was another easy task and definitely good to do to complete the clutch job.

I

Once I brought it down, I pulled all but one set of 2 x 4’s out, leaving those two cross pieces to support the motor. I then put the transmission on my floor jack, and was able to mate the two together without any difficulty. From what I’ve read, this is the main reason many people suggest dropping the motor and tranny together; to make the re-joining simple. You do need to swing the clutch release fork out about 45 degrees so it can capture the throw-out bearing, and the transmission output shaft (splined) needs to line up with the clutch plate. I can see that trying to do this while the tranny is in the car may be cause for the use of foul language. On the ground, it’s pretty simple.

. . . the sound of it running again was music to my ears . . .

n part 2 of our story, we left our “heroine” waiting to be rescued. Well, I can now tell you that it does have a happy ending. After getting the motor all back together, I brought it down off of the engine stand using the ATV jack. It took a few levels of 2 x 4’s and 2 x 6’s to be able to get up under the motor, but it wasn’t too bad.

Dallas - We Have Re-Entry!

I put the rear end of the car up high, about 34 inches clear under the back bumper, with the front wheels on the ground. I then slid the motor and transmission assembly into approximate location under the car. The main thing is to line it up with the car in the left-right direction, as you’ll roll the motor forward or backward as you jack it up to get it oriented in that direction.

I didn’t put the muffler back on until I was sure it would run, so after hooking up the battery, I left the coil wire unhooked and cranked the motor over until I saw oil pressure. Once the needle jumped up, I hooked up the coil wire and turned the key. It fired up immediately, and the sound of it running again, with straight headers(!), was music to my ears. Once I was confident there was no oil pouring out or anything else very bad, I decided the motor would stay in, and I finished the installation by putting the muffler back on and other miscellaneous tasks. On the road, the new clutch felt totally different. It was kind of un-nerving that it was so smooth and easy. All in all, I spent a few dollars doing this, but I saved a bunch too, and more importantly, gained the satisfaction and confidenceby doing this at home myself. With a little help from my friends, that is!

I had to make sure all wires, hoses, etc. were out of the way, and then jacked the motor up. As I got it closer to the body, I then jacked up the front end of the car slowly, which simultaneously lowered the rear of the cart closer to the motor. I took my time, and made several circles around to make sure nothing was interfering with the motor getting back where it needed to be. Once I was able to get the shift rod back into the tunnel, I focused on mating the rear mounts up.

Remember to Renew! PCA only sends out one renewal notice, if you do not pay your dues before (or *slightly* after) your membership expires, you will be dropped from the national roster. That means you'll no longer get Panorama, Slipstream, or first priority into DEs! PCA makes it easy to renew with both mail-in forms and online registration. Besides, it's only $42 per year! If you are thinking of not renewing, please contact one of the board members on page 4 so we can know what we're doing that isn't suiting you. If we don't know that there's a problem, we can't fix the problem. We want you to be happy in the club and are doing our very best to schedule a variety of events for everyone. Help us help you and RENEW!
