My Thoughts

H

by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor ave you ever had one of those “moments?” You know, the one where things just happen, or don’t happen, that you have no control over? You can’t get to the one thing that you want/need to. “This” has to be done first. “That” emergency stops everything. The sock drawer is in shambles and “must” be taken care of immediately. You’ve been there too, admit it, you know you have. That’s the way April was for me. A month long “moment.” And I still cannot figure out what happened other than when I tried to head towards the Slipstream computer I was paralyzed. I was late getting started. I had no free moments to work. Everything was a struggle, getting pictures, articles, updated ads. The computer was giving me fits. The moon was out of alignment. Somebody messed up that sock drawer again. Dang it! I even have more help than ever, thanks to my HELP message earlier in the year. I just couldn’t get all the pieces together.

So I apologize for the tardiness of the May Slipstream. There was no reason for it other than my paralysis and I truly hope that doesn’t happen again. It certainly wasn’t fun on this side either. So now on to June. Here we are and it’s lovely. Look at all the wonderful things to do this month. A two day Time Trial and Autocross to start the month, May 31-June 1. A practice rally and school with Teri Davis on June 7, a dueling Time Trial on June 21. And don’t forget the ever popular Father’s Day picnic on... drum roll please, Father’s Day, June 15 (a personal favorite of mine). The board meeting, lunch and Happy Hour are on their typical days and there’s also a Drivers’ Education event hosted by Houston’s Lone Star at Texas World Speedway in Bryan, TX. If there isn’t something in this mix of activities that tempts you to join in, you need to take a moment and regroup. This is your club, your extended family. Come on out and play.

Annual Bluebonnet Sunday Drive by John & Chris Hamilton Sunday, April 20, 2008

T

exas supplied great weather and Drive Meister Paul Valdez led a great tour through the hills of Ennis in search of the elusive Bluebonnet. And this year our search was rewarded with some great scenery and views of a number of great wildflowers, including a few bluebonnets! We also viewed some of Texas’s other vegetation, such as the Texas Cactus, and the (pictured) extremely rare “BootBonnet,” which can only be found in Ennis.

photos by John Hamilton

As always, some of the best fun is at the pre-drive meeting, where you greet some old friends that you may not have seen for a while, and make some new friends. And there may have been just a little car-envy going on, no matter what you were driving. We had a 1965 Porsche 356B, a couple of 944’s, a half-dozen Boxsters and eight or ten 911’s (including a RUF turbo!). As it turned out, sometimes the PORSCHEs became the object of other’s camera work, as cars would stop along the way to take photos of our cars! We ended the day at “Bubba’s Bar-B-Que” on I-45 out-

side of Ennis, and enjoyed a cool drink and maybe a piece of pie. What a great time we all had. “Wish you were here” if you weren’t, and hope you’ll join us on the n ext tour!

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis, Secretary

M

inutes of the May 7, 2008 Board Meeting

In attendance: Mark Gluck, Frank Briggs, Bobby Briggs, Bob Lewis, Bob Kuykendall, Jan Mayo, Clay Perrine, Robyn Howard, Travis Howard, Clint Blackman, Charlie Davis, and Teri Davis. Mark called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM. James, in absentia, had nothing to say. Teri reported that she was still working on a Rally School scheduled for June 7th and a rally for July 20th.

Charlie has redone the Autocross/Time Trial Classification Form. The old Form did not ask for enough information. Travis said that the first Time Trial was modestly attended, thus we gave each entrant 12 runs. He will send information about the dual Time Trial to Mark so that he can prepare an ad. Robyn had nothing to add about the calendar. Clay announced that he has contracts for the ballpark lot in Arlington. We discussed the wording of the contract and suggested that Clay send it to Woody DeLong (PCA National Legal Advisor) and Ken Labord (PCA National Insurance Advisor) for their comments. Clay reminded us that he is still looking for a Dallas County venue for autocrosses. Clay wants to buy four dollies, which will enable us to move cars parked on our autocross lots in the event that they are a safety or course hazard. The board approved up to $200 for this purchase. Switching hats, Clay informed us that he will be printing 250 fliers for the October 11th Swap Meet. Clint reported a good turnout (15 cars) for the last Sunday drive. He told us that Boardwalk is looking forward to the coming Tech Session at their dealership. Jan plans to run the October Swap Meet ad in the July issue of Slipstream. She reminded Travis and Mark that she must have the ad for the dual Time Trial next week. Bob K has money. It’s actually our money, but he keeps track of it for us. He reported a surplus of approximately $13,000 and $7,000 for the last two DE’s, which was substantially better than last year. Jan, switching to Wendy’s hat, reported there were approximately 40 Club Race entrants and 55 DE entrants registered for our Memorial Day weekend event. Jan, switching to Tracey’s hat, announced that everything for May at Mayo’s is ready. Concours judging will start at 4:00 PM. Bob L reminded us that the next Happy Hour will be at Edelweiss in Fort Worth on the 17th. In June it will be at Abuelo’s in Lewisville and in July it will be at Southlake Tavern. Bobbie said she’s just supporting Frank. Frank, substituting for Jack Griffin, said that in addition to the Concours at May at Mayo’s, there will be one more Porsche-only Concours this year and possibly one to two more German car events (in conjunction with other clubs). Mark said he has requested insurance for all pending events. He adjourned the meeting at 8:00 PM.

Good luck to the ~30 Maverick Region members attending this year’s Porsche Parade (the Porsche Club of America’s annual convention) in Charlotte, North Carolina from June 27 - July 3. We wish everyone safe travels and many competition victories. Most of all, have fun! Hopefully even more members can attend next year’s event in Keystone, Colorado.

When is a Slalom not a Slalom? By Carey Spreen

M

averick Region kicked off its 2008 Autocross Series with two events on consecutive Sundays. The first took place at a new (for us) venue--Birdville ISD Stadium in North Richland Hills-on March 30, with the second-at HEB ISD’s Pennington Field in Bedford--following closely on April 6. Turnout was healthy at both events, with 52 drivers at Birds- Clay Perrine, the new “Autoville and 59 drivers at Pennington. cross Commish”. (CD) The Birdville ISD lot is similar to the Pennington lot, but significantly smaller, and containing six large permanent concrete pylons, more popularly known as light poles. This made for an interesting exercise in course packaging on the part of Clay Perrine, the Maverick Region Autocross Chairman for this year: how to lay out an interesting course on a lot only a few hundred feet long and wide. Clay’s solution: very tight turns, a skidpad, a chicane, a slalom, and an unusual feature masquerading as a slalom. Simply named “3/2 Time” on the course map, this feature looked for all the world (on paper anyway) like a short 3-cone slalom with additional cones on both sides of each central slalom cone, plus a two-cone gate located between the first and second “slalom” cones, and another one between the second and third “slalom” cones. So what the driver saw from the Bob Kiykendall with some serious lifting as he heads for c o c k p i t was three the finish. (KH) cones leftto-right, then a normal two-cone gate, then three again, then two again, then a final three cones. And from the first set of three to the last couldn’t have been more than 60 feet, so the first time through this part of the course it looked like the proverbial “sea of cones”. Most of us (in fact, all of us except The Autocross Commish) interpreted this as a typical slalom, driving on alternating sides of each successive center pylon. However, when Der Kone Kommissar came through on his first run, the corner workers called it in as a DNF, since Clay had stayed on the same side of all three center cones. But then he did it again 10

Photos by Charlie Davis and Ken Hurst on his next run, and the next, and the next! Sensing a pattern, a brief discussion ensued, with the resulting revelation that the unusual 3-2-3-2-3 cone layout was NOT a slalom at all, but just a series of tandem gates in a slightly zigzagging line. Turns out that when Clay said that it was optional, he didn’t mean which side of the first slalom cone you started on, but actually which side of the entire series of gates you went through! Needless to say, lap times dropped significantly Marilyn Moseley (top) after this information was distributed and Tannia Dobbins both at a second drivers’ meeting after the equally challenged by the slalom. . . .When it’s Autocross#1 and #2 A n y way, this course was pretty much point-andshoot, even for the normally flickflick cars like 914s and Miatas. Mike Lockas experiencing cone difficulty. (KH) These “made for autocrossing” cars could use 2nd gear through most of the course but anything bigger required 1st gear for the first half lap with a brief upshift to 2nd for the “fast” back part of the course, but then it was back to 1st for the “direction of rotation optional” skidpad and dual 90-degree lefts leading into the final box chicane.

were some quick times put in by the Lotus of David Smart and the 914-6 of Rick Gonzales, but fastest time of day was set by Robert Huffman in his beautiful 2.8-liter 914-6 race car.

So unless you had a car with a high enough 1st gear and/ or redline to make it all the way around without shifting (such as a Honda S2000), or enough torque to pull 2nd all the way around (like a Corvette), you were shifting twice per run if you wanted a decent lap time. It was a fun but challenging course, and the corner workers all got their exercise shagging cones that day. And we all got ten runs Clay Perrine contributing to the cones left for the corner workers. (CD) each!

Autocross #2 Results

The next Sunday’s event at Pennington Field was a different story. Under skies that threatened cold and rain in the morning (although it turned out to be just a bluff), Clay, the Czar of Czig Czag, laid out a course that took advantage of the greater square footage of the Pennington Field lot, but still managed to throw in a couple of relatively tight (although still 2nd-gear) 90-degree bends, allowing the horsepower-challenged cars to redeem themselves. From the start line, a couple of offset gates led to a 90-degree box turn to the left, which immediately fed into a good-sized skidpad, then to a sweeping left, a 5-cone slalom (yes, a REAL slalom this time!), with another tight 90-degree box turn to the right, and a slightly less tight left turn that pointed you at the finish line. In keeping with previous autocrosses held at Pennington Field, the course was a good combination of straights and Michael Pelletier expertly gates that flowed well, and allowed just driving the 5-cone slalom. about everyone except the 996s to stay (KH) in 2nd gear all the way around. There

Once again there was time for 10 runs, and we still finished by about 4pm. The next autocross event will be at the MineralRing in Mineral Wells, as part of a full weekend of Time Trial and Autocross action on April 26 and 27 respectively. And the MineralRing of course Charlie, the photo master, after a long weekend of taking great shots -will have lots of room becaptured by Ken. tween gates; no 1st gear turns there! Next Time Around Let’s Use All of the Track by James Petrosky “You’re doing great – remember, next time around let’s make sure we use all of the track on that turn and that you let the car track out after the apex.” The words of my driving instructor, Michael, were welcomed and appreciated as we completed our second lap of Saturday’s first “blue” session. I‘d not driven on a race track in a while and at this point

Shane Altman (May’s cover photographer) and James Petrosky (author)

in the first session of the weekend I found myself and my driving skills to be much like that of the weather on this icy Texas morning – cold. The weather forecast for the days leading up to the March Driver’s Education event at Eagles Canyon Raceway started out promising, however, as the weekend approached the forecasts turned from partly cloudy, to cold, and finally, to snow. By Saturday, Slidell had seen several inches of snow over the days leading up to the event. It had stopped snowing on Friday, but the temperature remained below freezing and snow became more and more visible as I made my way north on I-35. As I drove the 911 to the track I literally had to maneuver the car around snow that had accumulated in the middle of the road and at times the front valance would scrape the occasional snow drift, spraying it onto the windshield and causing one to wonder: “if it’s this snowy and wet on the road, what might we expect to see on the track?” Upon arriving at ECR it was apparent that the facility had not been spared the brunt of the weather. It was also clear that Brian Henderson and the ECR track team were working hard to ensure that we could have a safe, fun, and successful weekend. Saturday morning began with 17 degrees on the thermometer and the mandatory driver’s meeting. Something new since my last DE is the requirement that each driver must display a colored “dot” on their windshield indicating

12

that they attended the morning’s drivers meeting (otherwise, you’re not allowed out on the track until you’ve been briefed by an instructor.) I find these meetings to be a great resource as it prepares your mind for driving and helps you remember the important things you should be thinking about while driving the track. This meeting was a little different than any I had attended in the past though for a couple of reasons. First, I had never been to a DE at ECR and it was good to get an overview and a walk-through of the track in the classroom before getting behind the wheel. Secondly, as the instructors had taken a ride around the course earlier that morning they were able to let us know of the areas we needed to be cautious of and where to watch for ice, water runoff or debris. After the meeting it’s time to go over the car once more before heading up to the grid when your group is called. Tire pressure, helmet, numbers, pulse – check. Drive up to the grid, look for your team and pull in. I met up with my instructor, Michael, and briefed him on my driving experience. I began driving in PCA DE’s in 2006 and over the course of the past few years have enjoyed learning to drive a Porsche at speed on a race track. The instructors are very good, not only at driving (and racing), but they’re equally talented in coach-

ing, communicating, and transferring their skills and knowledge to their students – having access to these folks makes the weekend that much more enjoyable. Next we discuss the car, track, and the things we’re going to look at working on in the first session. Jan, enduring the cold weather, points us out to the track and it’s time for our first run. I was a bit rusty at the beginning of the weekend and Michael was very helpful in reminding me of the line and the small cues to keep the driving smooth. It was also exciting to drive the new track and test the legs of the car on the straights. Amazingly, there were only a few places with ice

across the track and we were able to drive most of the track at speed – considering the amount of snow and mud caused by the weather in the days before the event this was truly a fantastic job by the ECR track team. The new track is very fun to drive and I like the way that certain areas and corners are designed to make you think much more about setting up the next turn. The long straight along the back between turns 6 and 7 allows you to gain quite a bit of speed. Then it’s hard on the brakes, downshift, back on the throttle, turn in to the left, “track all the way out?”, not on the exit of 7 – turn 8 is an immediate right and you need to set it up to carry your speed down to 9. In total, the four long straights at ECR provide good exercise for your car’s higher gears and the series of corners offered immense enjoyment and continued to challenge you to drive smoother (and faster) throughout the weekend. In the previous DE’s I’ve had the pleasure of meeting new people and it’s always fun to run into them at these events. Mike Farrar and Shane Altman are two drivers I’ve gotten to know through PCA DE’s and both were at March’s event. We met for lunch, caught up with each other, talked about the track, our driving, how to “blip” the throttle, which gear is good for which turn, and generally relive the fun of the morning and have some good laughs. After two more sessions in the afternoon it was time for the spaghetti dinner and happy hour which makes for an even better time as all sessions have been completed and the drivers, corner workers, and instructors have a chance to socialize and discuss the day and share stories and experiences with each other. For Sunday’s sessions we were treated with sunnier and warmer weather. Most of the ice and snow began to melt and you could sense that people were getting more comfortable with the track. As I lined up on the grid for the final session of the day I had a little extra time to look at some of the cars at the event. One of the major differences I noticed between this event and those of the prior years is that in addition to the many various older model Porsches typically seen at these DE’s, many drivers were driving newer cars – 996’s, 997’s, Boxsters, and several Caymans were seen throughout the groups. It’s great to see people learning more about their daily drivers, how to drive them, and what they’re capable of doing when driven properly.

take this serious and in so doing make it a comfortable place for learning the skills to drive your car under speed. There were only a few “offs” over the weekend which was fortunate as the ground surrounding the track was very wet and muddy. Due to the mud, those drivers that experienced an “off” were able to take advantage of the new pressure washer ECR has on site for such an occasion (take my word for it, it’s a nice piece of machinery and is very useful for removing mud from the underside of a car.) Overall, the weekend was a great success and I thoroughly enjoyed my first outing at ECR. Many thanks to the instructors, corner workers, ECR track team, and to Colin Graidage and Jan Mayo for braving the cold weather and doing all that you do to make these weekends possible! Looking forward to seeing you next time, in warmer (and hopefully, drier) weather.

On a final note, the instructors will remind you that this is driver education, not racing – and they’re absolutely right. Although there is a strong sense of satisfaction in being able to drive your car fast, staying with other cars on the track (as opposed to watching their taillights fade away in the distance), and to continually challenging yourself to drive just a bit faster, just a bit smoother; There’s also an equally satisfying feeling in staying on the track, and more to the point, staying safe. The corner workers, instructors, and drivers all 13

Park Place Tech by Michael S. Pelletier

O

n April 19th Park Place Porsche organized one of these famous tech sessions. The advertisement in Slipstream had this “when was the last time you looked under your Porsche” tag line which most certainly caught my attention. Since my own answer to the ad’s question was “never” I felt compelled to swing by the dealership and find out what was taking place. Upon arrival the success of the event could be easily measured by the absence of available parking space and the number of people wandering around the service area. The actual event was taking place in the shop and was in many ways reminiscent of the grand opening Park Place organized a few years ago, although somewhat more low-key. The first part of the shop had been converted in a “static” exhibition / trade show hall where a handful of selected partners were exhibiting their services, surrounded by some beautiful cars. The partners exhibiting alongside Park Place were all very friendly and offered some great insight into their ability to install clear bras, remove hail damage or even repair and refinish damaged plastic parts. The cars on display were all most interesting, from the 2 Carrera GT to the impeccably restored silver with red interior 356 or the new Boxster RS Spyder edition. The most surprising car was the late yellow Spyder RS which attracted significant interest and curiosity from all present.

The second part of the event was taking place in the very busy other half of the shop where very patient techs were busy servicing cars while responding to questions from the crowd. After watching an alignment being performed on a pristine blue GT3, and glancing over the opened hood of a Boxster, I sat down and enjoyed a delicious Catered Tex

Mex lunch, with some fellow Mavericks. Once the hunger was satisfied I remembered that grinding noise I had experienced while cornering hard in my own car at the last Autocross and decided to find out if one of the technicians working the cars would have an explanation. “Engine mount” said Jeff immediately and with assurance. “Get your car in line and I’ll put it on the lift”. A Few minutes later I found myself walking under my car, taking in all the information Jeff was giving me about various aspects of the car while removing panels and pointing at different parts. Very quickly Jeff’s finger (and flash light) was pointing at an engine mount which displayed a small crack, confirming his original assumption. After a good 20 minutes and a long chat about track events and its effect on the car, we finally took the car back to floor level. I thanked Jeff and made my way towards the service advisors where I asked to be reassigned to the team to which he belongs. I left Park Place extremely pleased with the entire experience, knowing that I would most definitely attend the next one and encourage everyone to do the same. The tech session to me ended up being more about the human aspect of the technicians that perform the work with a passion for both the cars and the people that share their love for Porsche than a cold technical explanation on a piece of machinery. I felt welcomed, interested, entertained, and somewhat enlightened. I experienced a true connection with some of the folks behind Park Place and of all people I must thank you Jeff!

Porsche 996 Ownership & Repair Series by Chuck Freeman

H

ello everyone. In this series of articles I want to relay some of the experiences I have had as a Porsche owner as well as some repair and maintenance aspects. Some of you may remember a series of articles I started in 2004 about the restoration of a 1973 911. That project was quite a handful. I learned a lot and had some fun in the process. However, my two young sons were at the point where I needed to devote time to them. So the project car had to go. In 2007 I found myself in a position to afford a Porsche as my daily driver. This car would not be a project car but reliable transportation to cover my 100 mile daily commute. My budget was less than $26,000 (to keep the wife from getting really mad at me for buying another car)! I considered all versions that Porsche has offered over the years. I looked at and drove anything from a 914, 924, 944, 968, or 928. Although they all had good attributes I realized I wouldn’t be happy with anything other than a 911. I considered all versions from the early long nose (pre-’74) up to a 996. I settled on a more modern car so looked at the 964 and 996. I never considered a 993 because they seem to fetch a significant premium over other years and was outside my budget. I test drove Denny Payne’s 964, which interestingly I had tested out with the owner before Denny. Nice car with classic lines. Then I found a 996 at a dealer in San Antonio that was willing to take my car in on trade. The

deal seemed to be pretty good to me. Hard to believe I could get my dream car for Toyota Camry money. Since the car was in San Antonio I was a little nervous as I would not be able to look the car over until I was essentially ready to make the purchase. I spoke with the dealer quite a bit and he had history and documentation on the car including repair work from Jones Autowerks in San Antonio. I spoke with the owner of Jones and he told me some of the work they had done and were willing to do a pre-purchase inspection, at my cost. After their inspection I was pleased to find everything seemed to be in good operating condition. No rear main seal leak, the leak down test looked good, and everything worked. So in late June I drove down to San Antonio and picked the car up. Since I didn’t read the manual before I left it took some time to decipher what the hieroglyphics on the controls meant. From San Antonio I took Highway 281 home to Granbury so I could drive some nice twisty hill country roads. At lunch time I stopped in Marble Falls and ordered a burger and Coke to go. Uh oh, where is the cup holder? Ooops, there isn’t one. Guess I have to keep the jumbo coke in my lap without spilling it. Still I had this big stupid grin on my face all the way home. So there you have it! I am the proud owner of a 2000 Porsche Carrera Tiptronic, Guards Red with aero kit. My next updates will include suspension replacement, spark plug change, and radiator cleaning.

Happy Hour at i Fratelli’s by Monda Hanna & Mike Lockas

T

he April Happy Hour at I Fratelli’s Italian restaurant started with very ominous sky’s in Las Colinas and the threat of severe weather. With storms that were producing tornados and baseball size hail in Mineral Wells, about 60 miles west of us, and heading our direction I was concerned that we would have a very low turnout. My concerns were met with a pleasant surprise that we had a very good turnout. Most of the attendee’s left the Porsche at home and headed out to the Happy Hour in their Other Car. Once inside we forgot about the storms that could be raging outside and settled in to what has been a favorite among our happy hour locations. The food is wonderful and its central location on MacArthur in Las Colinas creates a convenient meeting point. One of the great drawing points of the Happy Hours is meeting members of the club in a social environment and the consumption of adult beverages is not a requirement, but having fun is. Much of the time our meetings are at driving events and the talk centers around the cars. At the Happy Hours conversations drift to many other areas of interest. Neal and Rebecca Fletcher (happy owners of a Neal Fletcher, 2005 Speed Yellow Boxster) are aka Neil Fisher! new to the club and Neil offered up an interesting tidbit that he is a published author using the pen name Neil Fisher.

own a condo at the lake there may be a possibility of a stopover during the tour. Bob and Carol Lockas (Mike’s Mom and Dad) were also in town from Liberal, Kansas and enjoyed meeting members of the club. There were so many interesting stories and people in attendance that it is difficult to mention them all here. I guess that the best way to find out what you are missing is to attend the next Happy Hour at …….drum roll please…… Abuelo’s.

We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer. If this doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, and lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family), and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity, The Huffaker Hughes Hope House. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us...we might just add something extra to the calendar. Please also feel free to share article ideas (and submissions) to editor@mavpca.org.

A PCA Historical Quip by Richard Bradlen

A

brief paragraph in the August 1955 issue of Sports Car Illustrated informed readers that a Porsche club was being formed in the United States. Starting with just twelve members in September of 1955, our club has grown to what it is today. Since its beginning, PCA has experienced exceptional growth, not only in members, but in the quality of its events and services. PCA serves over 97,000 members in 139 local Regions. PCA concours standards are second to none. Multiple national committees help members with technical

problems, insurance valuations, event safety, public relations, and Region newsletters. Through its legislative liaison, PCA has a respected profile in Washington, DC, enjoying an excellent rapport with legislators. Activities today range from autocrossing, rallying, concours, and socializing to growing interests in restoration, Porsche history, and PCA Club Racing. A revised “Treffen” allows PCA members to visit the factory works in Stuttgart and the R & D unit at Weissach. The Club functions like a finely tuned Porsche. 27
