AVING MONEY ON GAS.
Okay, now that I’ve got your attention, let’s talk about how YOU can save money on gas. As my son said to me this week: “Dad, you’re frugal!” Okay, I’ll take that as a compliment. 1. Yes: I shop at the local grocery that gives me points that save me 10¢ a gallon on gas every time I fill up. 2. Yes: I use the gas station’s branded MasterCard to automatically give me a 5% (that’s 20¢ a gallon, friends) rebate on their gas. So I’m getting 30¢ off a gallon from the name-brand PREMIUM gasoline. Even though they are more expensive on their signs, I’m sure I’m below the volume-dealers, so I’m happy. SO.... what are YOU doing to save money on gas??? I hope it’s NOT: a. Avoiding going to a Driver’s Ed weekend (you’re kidding, right!?!) b. Avoiding a Sunday Drive (NOT an acceptable excuse) c. Driving your Porsche, except on the weekends (Heaven forbid!) So how about using someone else’s gas for a change? HAVE WE GOT THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU!!! Saturday, June 18th, we celebrate Father’s Day (albeit a day early) at SpeedZone (off I-35E at the Walnut Hill exit) with family and friends. This is one of our most popular events, and it MAY have something to do with the FREE TAILGATE PARTY BUFFET! Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken breasts, the sides and all the fixins are on us and start being served at 11:30 a.m. The party goes from 11 to 3:30, so don’t miss out. Dads (and sons, daughters, moms and other friends and relatives) have a BLAST, so bring your camera so you can keep memories of all the great times that will be had (bad grammar, but it gets the point across). 2
Did you notice that I’m more sensitive about my grammar? Heck: I’ve also got to worry about my math! Yes: I’m corrected: more than 1/3 of the year had gone by last month (thanks, everyone), and by now, we’re close to 1/2!!! But we’ve had a great first half of the year and it’s only going to grow from here. In case you don’t read until two pages from the end of each issue, we’re now at 1,919 total membership (as of the May issue of Slipstream) and rapidly approaching 2,000 in the Maverick Region! This is in no small part due to the efforts of Joel Nannis, who has led our Membership Committee for the past TWENTY-SIX YEARS. Well, sometime in the next twelve months (approaching our 50th year) we will surpass that magic 2,000 number, which will be fantastic! We are already one of the top EIGHT regions in the nation in membership (did you realize that?). We continue to grow thanks to all the many volunteers who so unselfishly give of their time and talents to provide activities and events that appeal to a
broad cross-section of members. For us to continue to grow, we need to continue to have events and activities that appeal to this diverse group.

Mav of the Month: Thus, it is with great pleasure that we award this month’s Mav. of the Month to Carey Spreen, our Ralleymeister, for his work on the Red River Derby Tour and Rally. You may not know this, but four miles of the tour/rally were under construction (surprise!) just a week before the rally/ tour. So Carey and his friends re-mapped the tour to make it enjoyable for the participants. Once again, volunteers to the rescue! Congrats, Carey, and enjoy your well-deserved dinner for two at the Silver Fox Steakhouse! For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Carey dinner for two at their award winning steak house. John

f you remember a few months back, I was trying to catch up to another Porsche in traffic in the Flower Mound area. As it turns out, the other day I was sitting at a traffic light and noticed that same car in my rear view mirror. As the light turned green, I was still on the phone and unfortunately he was able to sprint around me while I was hanging up. Upon catching him at the next light, I gave him the thumbs up as he looked back at me with his head out the window. Shouting over the noise, I heard something about his 500+ horse power... Even with my extra 90 HP in my 2002 Boxster S, there was no way to compete with the brute power he was putting down. Who ever is the owner of this Seal Grey 996 TT, and if you are a member and reading this, drop me a line, maybe we can start a breakfast group in our area of town or just hook up for a drive. There’s always room on the calendar to meet other enthusiasts living close by. Make a point to meet someone new this month at one of our events. If you want something different, come up with an idea and we can add it to our calendar. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people...

Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao
O
ur May board meeting reviewed our upcoming Maverick Regional activities in Q2/Q3 2011. Once again the officers of the organization would like to thank the committee chairs, and you, our regional members, for your support and participation of our club events.
John Hamilton, our President, opened the meeting at 7pm and described an outreach program to recruit new members, and retain existing ones, by offering programs of value to Maverick Region members. Toward this objective, John announced the formation of a membership committee to be led by Lisa Steele. Lisa will be charged with sustaining a positive ‘on boarding’ experience for new members. Some of the tactics Lisa will introduce include a welcome letter, badge ordering process, and tailored communications based on the needs elicited from our upcoming Maverick Region membership survey. Richard Bradley wowed everyone with the ‘exquisite’ capabilities of his new Mac computer. With all of the artistic activities associated with the Maverick Region 50th anniversary, Richard, I am sure you’ll be using your Mac quite a bit. Together, Richard and Pat Friend discussed a proposal to print Slipstream in full-color. Based on an economic review, Pat recommended that Slipstream maintain its current format (color cover and black & white print). Pat suggested that a special color insert could be created for any 50th anniversary activities. The board agreed and will consider such an option as that for the future. Ed Mullenix discussed holding a Tech Session on July 9, 2011. Stay tuned for details. Luke Edson described that the equipment used at recent Drivers’ Education events required a minor refurbishment. Next, Linda Bambina, Christy Payne, and Lisa Steele noted that plans are underway for the Maverick Region 50th Anniversary in 2012. Linda is currently evaluating venues for a spectacular 50th anniversary photo shoot. Stay tuned for updates regarding the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Please make sure your calendars are marked for Founders Day on November 12th, 2011. This event reflects the kick-off for the 2012 50th Anniversary. Christy Payne reminded us about the upcoming Porsches and Ponies event to be held July 3rd at Lonestar Park. The park will present a night time fireworks show. Check the Maverick Region website or Slipstream for future details. Lisa reiterated the need for new tactics to welcome the new members to the Maverick Region. She concluded 8
by reporting that 85 drivers participated in the recent Drivers’ Education event. Continuing on this subject, more instructors are needed to handle the increased number of drivers. If this sounds like you, please contact a board member for more information. Fresh from tax season, our treasurer, Jim Falgout reported that our financial condition is healthy. Next, Travis Howard described the April 9th-10th Autocross/Time Trial events at Rangers Stadium. These were well attended and the venue was challenging. He described the upcoming May 21-22 driving events at Mineral Wells. He concluded by describing the need for new timing equipment in the future. James Shoffit provided an update about our Maverick Region directory. Printed copies can be ordered for $5 at www.clubregistration.net. BJ and John Harvey described the successful Bluebonnet Drive in April (>40 drivers) and the May 14th Saturday drive to Rancho Sereno. BJ updated us about the Maverick Region Roundup on July 15-17th at Possum Kingdom. Due to the tragic fire there the event has been postponed until 2012. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy. Frank Briggs reminded us about the May at Mayo’s (Performance Shop) event in Euless on May 7th. He also described the Autos in the Park event on June 5th at the Cooper Aerobic Center in Dallas, Texas. Bring your Porsche, it will thank you for the workout! Chris Christensen updated the board about a recent change to the Happy Hour organizational committee. In addition to Chris and Ann Christensen, Frank and Bobbie Briggs, Ralph and Barbara Kauffman, and Doug and Cheryl Koeppen will be involved in the hosting of Happy Hours and submission of the event summary to Slipstream. Other Maverick Region members are welcome to host. Please contact Chris for additional information. John Hamilton concluded by announcing the May 2011 Maverick of the Month, Carey Spreen. Carey has been instrumental in creating the “Red River Derby” on May 14th and has provided numerous years of dedicated service to the Maverick Region. On behalf of the region, Congratulations! Maverick Moments. Steven and Karen Salazar are new Maverick Region members. They joined us at this board meeting and recently participated in the Bluebonnet Drive and the Happy Hour at the Wildwood Grill. As I mentioned last month, if you would like a ‘behind the scenes view’ of regional activities please join us at a monthly board meeting. Please RSVP to Christy Payne at social@mavpca.
May 4, 2011 org to do so. Lastly, by the time you read this we will have started surveying our Maverick Region membership (that’s you!) to better understand your needs and expectations. We appreciate the opportunity to do so. Meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm.

Red River Derby - Tour By Don Sebert
I
t was a dark and stormy day, but not here. If you hesitated, contemplated or stressed over the thought of, should I or should I not take out my Jewel and didn’t, then you lost out big time. It was a perfect pre summer day, 70 degrees and sunshine. There were 56 magnificent Porsche jewels along with 89 fast old & new friends to partake in all the events.
Our tour lasted about 2 ½ hours with a halfway pit stop. Those with convertibles that didn’t start out with tops down did so at the stop. Beautiful weather and much to see. Just a great day to be out.
When we We all met at Westgate Shopping arrived at Center in McKinney and preceded R a n c h o in two separate groups for a North Sereno, we Texas Tour and a Gimmick Rally on were greeted two different routes, all ending at by a beautiful former Maverick members Mike & ranch with Lisa Maberry’s Rancho Sereno by lakes, horses Whitesboro near the Red River, for a and colts BBQ dinner. There were 26 cars on as well as a Thank you John and BJ for a magnificent drive... the tour and 20 on the rally. Both were charming Bed treated to some unique experiences. & Breakfast I chose the tour and we started around 1:00 and proceeded facility on site and our wonderful hosts Mike & Lisa. We north onto some wonderful winding back road sweepers were immediately treated to wine & drinks. and tight turns, while all the time viewing some of the most pleasant North Texas ranch land I’ve seen (we don’t have that in Missouri.)

We had some good BBQ (for Texas) and visited with great old and new friends discussing the day’s events. The amount of new faces was a delight and we hope they will return for more fun filled events. The Maverick Region has a multitude of events to pick from that please all. A special thanks to our hosts, Mike & Lisa Maberry for welcoming an abundance of Maverick folks and especially a very deserving hand goes out to John & B J (Tour Meisters) Harvey, along with their helpers, for putting
together a fun filled day and a good excuse to drive our Porsches and be with friends. Note: Mike Even the Long Horn nodded at our arrival! and Lisa Maberry have offered a 20% discount on their Bed & Breakfast rates to all Maverick PCA members so be sure to check with them on your next trip to the area. You can visit their website at www.ranchosereno. com.
Mike sure made us feel welcome from the start.

Cliff’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear
I
have wanted to write something here about air bag/supplemental restraint systems for quite some time. Over the weekend I started looking for information about air bag deployment speeds, how they are deployed, and what makes the systems do what they do. I know that when the systems were introduced to us Porsche techs in the mid 80’s we were told a driver’s air bag goes from no deployment to full deployment to full deflation in around 280 milliseconds. The entire safety aspect of seat belts and things like thorax air bags, and side curtain airbags are something we Porsche techs deal with daily. I have always found these systems to be very interesting. Then tonight I’m on my way home in a driving rainstorm. It was raining so hard at times that traffic on I-35 slowed to 15-20 mph, folks were driving with their 4 way flashers on. Something like driving thru a car wash. I exited I-35 and got on I-20. The rain slowed but the water was deep in places on the road. Just past Hulen exit I’m in the far left lane and a car about 100 yards in front of me suddenly changes lanes to the middle lane. About 200 yards further ahead is a car crashed into the left lane divider. Vehicle was sitting perpendicular (I mean 90 degrees), to the flow of traffic. Left shoulder and most of left lane blocked. I hit the 4 way flashers and the brakes at the same time while considering changing lanes. Ahead, as I slowed, I saw a person sitting on the ground with drivers’ door open and laying against the door sill. Driver was a young girl wearing shorts, no shoes, tee shirt and sitting in the rain with her head down between her knees. Jumped out and asked if she was ok. “I don’t know” she replied. She was crying, hysterical, and just sitting on the pavement up against the car between the door and the door sill. Grabbed for my cell and dialed 911 while looking upstream to see if we were gonna get run over. Saw 2 more people had stopped behind me and had their flashers on plus exiting their cars to render aid. Explained to 911 operator the location, direction of travel, lane blockage and current driver situation. Driver was moving in such a way as to indicate to me that she had no broken bones. Good head movement, legs, arms, etc. No bleeding that I could see. I found myself looking at the car and saw both air bags deployed. Front end heavily damaged. Next I turned my full attention to her. She was absolutely hysterical. Crying, had no idea what happened. I thought of my girls for some reason while all this was transpiring. Found myself stroking her hair and telling her she was ok, that her car was not that badly damaged. Trying to calm her while we waited for EMT. One of the other drivers that had stopped put a coat over her to help keep her warm. It was 14
Being Safe On The Road raining pretty hard. Police and EMT arrived within minutes of my call. Their actions were so well rehearsed and dead on to the situation. An EMT driver made the comment to one of the officers that he thought she had lost control in a deep puddle about 150 yards upstream of us. I feel certain he was right. I was told that since I did not actually see the accident that I was no longer required to stay around. By then I was totally soaked with the rain and getting cold. I wanted to touch her and tell her she would be ok, but she was totally surrounded by some pretty awesome caring emergency people looking after her immediate needs. So I left and came home. When she lost control and hit that wall: G forces were measured, speed and angle of impact were considered, distance from steering wheel was well calculated, seat belt pretensioners activated. Her head rotated forward and was stopped by an inflated device that most likely prevented a very bad neck injury. She probably has burn marks on her arms and chest from the impact with the airbag. The seat belts will have burn marks where they wrap around the buckle. This is normal for impact situations above 25 mph. The front of the car has controlled deformation zones that absorbed energy as the car hit the wall. There was no damage inside the car from impact as the forward structure absorbed all the energy. A G force sensor sent a signal to a control unit (microprocessor). That unit compared that signal to a program map and then sent a signal to deploy both the air bags and to tighten the seat belt to a pre determined tension. All in a few thousandths of a second. Signals were sent via gold plated contacts at every connection point. Wiring completely dedicated to these circuits. A system we test for readiness every 4 years on all cars. Plus doors were unlocked, fuel pump was shut off. That is how the safety systems work. There are a ton of drivers out there that have no interest in their car or what it does. It is just an item they need to have, like a refrigerator or stove. They comply with whatever is needed to allow them to operate this item in their lives. Then when driving home one night in the rain this item keeps them alive and well in an ugly situation. These drivers simply are carbon units in a machine to me. Until something like this happens. I wish I could contact her and make sure she is ok. Yet I know she is ok. The little Dodge econobox she was driving did what it was mandated to do by the DOT. What a weird thing for me to deal with, right when I have been thinking about safety mandates. Cliff

May at Mayo’s By Frank Briggs
I
f you missed the May at Mayo’s concours and eatathon aka (Babe’s Fried Chicken) you must put it on your calendar for next year. With more than 80 members and guests, it was possibly one of our largest gatherings for this traditional event.
Photo by Frank Briggs and Travis Howard The weather was great, although the temperature was about 10 degrees above normal. A day like that is very conducive to bringing out a multitude of beautiful cars. We had almost every model represented and if you ask me, I would be very proud to have any of them in my garage. With 9 classes to award, we enjoyed seeing some very excited owners recognized by a wonderful round of applause as each trophy was presented. One of the best things about such a gathering like this is there was something for everyone. Lisa Steele did a remarkable job of having everything from face painting to bird house painting to pinata striking for the younger set. It was great fun watching our ten future P Car owners take swings at the pinata. Thank you, Lisa, for doing such a nice job with our little ones!!!

The event could not have been so well organized without the oversight of Christy Payne. What a nice job of making sure that everything went off without a hitch. There was plenty of food to enjoy, some beautiful trophies to award and the room (Garage) was set up very nicely with tables to seat over 100, just in case. Thank you, Christy, for hosting this fun afternoon and evening!!! I would be very remiss if I did not express my gratitude to Denny Payne for jumping in and staging the cars for the concours, as well as Lisa Steele and Doreen Petri for tabulating the winners. Thank you all for the impromptu help. Your actions were the essence of the word “Volunteer.” Hats off also to Wendy and James Another fun day in the garage... Shoffit who’s first

words upon arriving were “what can I do to help?” Wow, what a great club this is. With Travis Howard and Nathan Hardwick (my 11 year old grandson and the future owner of a Porsche 993) as our official photographers, they were able to capture the event with some pictures I hope you will all enjoy. A final thank you to Ed Mayo for opening his business to us once again. This is always a fun venue for the “Car Guy” in each of us. Please plan on making this one of your Porsche Club happenings next year. I have already ordered sunny skies and mild breezes.

ROUND-UP 2011 CANCELLED By B. J. Harvey
D
ue to the terrible wildfires in the Possum Kingdom Lake area, the committee has voted to cancel this year’s event. The devastation has been quite terrible, as most of you know, and has included loss of life and many homes being damaged or destroyed. Optimists that we are, we will continue planning for the event next year. The committee is very excited about planning this fun weekend and are looking forward to it. The agenda for 2012 Round-Up might be as follows: Friday evening happy hour (cash bar) and check- in at The Cliffs Resort pool area with options for dinner for those

who can come for the whole weekend. Our committee members plan to go a little earlier on Friday to try out the go-cart racing track that is close by. Saturday events will include check-in with donuts and coffee available, Show N Shine at the Cliffs Hotel parking lot, lunch, pontoon boat cruising and water activities; dinner, awards and a team tech quiz. Sunday will finish the weekend event with an early breakfast and Sunday Drive. After the Sunday drive, all attending are encouraged to stay around and enjoy golf, tennis, kyacking and other activities available at the Lake. Hotel/motel accommodations have been checked out and updated info will be presented when time is nearer to the July 2012 date. FYI, cell phone reception in the lake area is spotty. WATCH FOR INFO ON THIS EVENT TO START SHOWING UP EARLY NEXT YEAR. Committee: Barb & Tom Minnella (our hosts at the Lake), BJ & John Harvey and Susan & Tom Froehlich.

Member Spotlight: Rick and Brooke Herold Andrea Bell, Public Relations Chair his month’s new member spotlight is on Rick and Brooke Herold. They purchased a 2003 Seal Grey/ Black 911 C4S coupe about 2 months ago. Rick said, “We bought it because my wife had a BMW 330 coupe when we got married. It didn’t last long when we moved out of our condos into a “fixer upper” and acquired dogs etc. We both have SUVs. We thought this is the perfect time to get a weekend sports car we both would like. My wife also loves to drive the C4S. She likes German cars so much now she traded her Lexus SUV in on a BMW X5 2 weeks ago.”
T
Rick and his beautiful wife and best friend, Brooke have been married almost 5 years. They also have a beautiful
daughter Avery who is nearly 2 years old. Rick has been in the DFW area for 10 years and grew up in Wichita Falls, TX. Rick likes to fish on the coast, hunt quail and pheasants, exercise, play golf and cook. He also enjoys spending time at the family ranch house in east Texas. He added, “My wife would say I’m now collecting cars as a hobby/interest now.” Please look for Rick, Brooke, and Avery at a future PCA event and extend a warm welcome into our Maverick family. Happy Hour - BJ’s Brewhouse By Ralph Kauffman

parking lot. We had a semi-private area along the north side of the restaurant, which made for somewhat close quarters during the cocktail hour. A minor excitement occurred when a waitress dropped a full glass of beer, shattering the glass and spattering beer across the floor. Unfounded rumor has it that the presence of all the PCA notables, including Maverick President John Hamilton, immediate past president Mike Brodigan, and former international racing great Jack Griffin, made her nervous. But no matter, BJ’s efficient staff soon had the mess cleaned up and everyone enjoyed a very pleasant dinner. Some of our favorite ladies... Clara Lewis, B J Harvey, Ann Christensen, and Susan Froelich
Among the attendees were firsttimers Bud Heflin (2001 Carrera), Carol and Steve Locke (2007 Silver 911), and Anne Scheuerle (2003 Carrera). Anne is a Captain for American Airlines. We appreciate that she flew in in her Carrera and left the plane at the airport.

One attractive feature is a large garage in which to keep his five motorcycles and, we hope, multiple Porsches. All in all everyone had a very enjoyable evening of conversation and Porsche camaraderie. We hope to see everyone and more at next month’s Happy Hour extravaganza. Getting a Grip By Travis Howard
T
he Autocross School this year was held in April at one of the Ball Park in Arlington’s parking lots. Since last year, the school got a new name, new location, and better weather. This year the autocross school became The Get a Grip Autocross Academy, pretty snazzy, right? Instead of the Pennington Field lot, we went bigger with the Ball Park in Arlington. And instead of the cold, ice or snow in February, we had sunshine and temperature in the upper seventies. Tw e n t y - o n e drivers enrolled for the experience and chance to see what their cars could do in an autocross environment. The students would get one-on-one instruction from some of the best.
Photos by Avery Murphy There were multiple AX Top Driver winners and even DE instructors such as Bryan Bell there to share their experience and knowledge with the students. In the morning while the exercises were being set up, I had a chance to survey the paddock. Lined up were Porsche models ranging from the 914 (known as one of the best autocross weapons in the right hands), to a 930 Turbo which would be a handful on the tight autocross course. We also had a sprinkling of newer water cooled Porsches. On the other end of the spectrum was a Cayenne shared by Jerry and Myra Sutton. Okay down to business. The students were split into two groups and matched to their instructors. One group would start with the Braking and Slalom exercises while the other group got acquainted with the Skid Pad. The instructor drives the car first to demonstrate the correct technique, then the student takes over. The Braking exercise teaches threshhold braking. The student accelerates at maximum speed and determines were they must start braking to stop at an identified spot using maximum braking without locking up the wheels or having the ABS in newer cars come on. Half the fun is the gathering... The slalom exercise is always one of the favorites. Here the student has a choice of an increasing (cone spacing gets wider), constant (cone spacing does not change), and a chicane (an offset pair of gates similar to changing lanes on the highway quickly). The Skid Pads are a test of car physics. The student drives around the Skid Pad as fast as possible using the throttle to steer the car around the circle. The afternoon was a chance to put the practiced skills to use. While one group of students ran the autocross course the other group worked the corners with their instructors. They had an excellent vantage point to observe the car as
