LL TIME HIGHS!

YES- I’M SHOUTING (all caps) BECAUSE I’M SO JAZZED ABOUT HOW WELL OUR CLUB IS DOING! • Total membership in your Maverick Region broke through 2,200! • Attendance at “50 Cars for 50 Years” was almost 300 people (and well over 100 Porsches)! • The past two Sunday Drives had 57 and 46 cars respectively! • Happy Hours have been PACKED! • Autocross School at Pennington was full despite the rain! • April Drivers’ Education was FULL in Green & Blue groups! • Attendance at Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s exceeded 100 people! I’m sure I’m missing something, but it’s been great. I hope you have joined us at one or more of these great events, because each has been a lot of fun! It has been especially rewarding to meet so many firsttime participants at each of these events. We’ve even had several Porsche owners join our club right after attending one of these events. But if you missed these events, DON’T WORRY, because we have many more spectacular events coming in the months ahead. Take a look at the calendar on the preceding page (or better yet, on our homepage: mav.pca. org) and see which appeals to you. Then write it on your calendar and JOIN THE FUN! I look forward to

2

seeing you at one of the many events that our great volunteers create.

Mav of the Month Each month we select someone in our club as “Mav of the Month” for going “above and beyond the call of duty” for our club. This month was especially difficult to decide, because so many had worked so hard on so many of the fantastic events listed above. But there was one individual who was just so outstanding in his dedication to creating an incredible memory for us all that he had to be chosen. Our Mav of the Month is our 40-plus-year member Charlie Davis, who has filled many roles in our club from time to time, but has continuously been our club’s photographer (and photographer for the national Porsche Parade.) Even if you haven’t met him personally, you probably SAW HIM above you at the 50 Cars for 50 Years event, where he was high above us all in a cherry-picker using some amazing photographic equipment to capture the 51 cars on the parking lot at Texas Motor Speedway. And after taking the pictures (the one picture is actually made up of 20 photos stitched together!) he spent countless hours perfecting the picture, which will also appear in a feature article in Panorama magazine.

So Charlie, for all you do, this one’s for you. You have been and continue to be simply AMAZING!!! Charlie receives a gift card to the Silver Fox in Grapevine as recognition for his outstanding efforts.

Carey On...

By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor

I

recently learned that advertising has been around for millenia. The Egyptians, and later the Greeks and Romans, used to advertise on papyrus posters and billboards. Other civilizations used to paint ads on walls and even rocks. During the Middle Ages, when most people did not know how to read, tradesmen advertised their wares with simple images depicting what product or service they provided, eventually becoming what we know today as logos. Print advertising appeared as early as the 18th Century in British newspapers, and were mainly unpaid promotions about new books and other periodicals. But in 1836 the

French newspaper La Presse was the first to run paid advertisements. This allowed the paper to offset its costs and charge half the cover price that other papers were charging. The rest is, as they say, history. Slipstream started out as just a one-page newsletter, with the sole purpose of getting information about upcoming events, and about events that recently took place, to the club members. There was no advertising back then, because it cost next to nothing to produce. Of course the newsletter grew into the magazine that you now have in front of you. And as you can guess, each issue costs quite a bit to produce and mail every month, so we sell advertising space to help offset those costs. All of this is sort of a long-winded

way of reminding you to think of our advertisers when you are looking for a product or service, whether it is Porsche-related or not. They pay us to place their ads in Slipstream, and in return expect a return on their investment in the guise of new or repeat customers. That’s why we ask that, when you do business with one of our advertisers, you tell them that you saw their ad in Slipstream. That way they know that their ads are doing their job. Two advertisers that have just recently joined us are Pro-Tect Mobile and The Phoenix Insurance. You can see a full list of our advertisers on page 32. Without them, this would be more of a newsletter than a magazine, so let them know that you appreciate their support! Read on!

Maverick Minutes By Madhu Rao, Secretary

O

ur May meeting started at 7:05pm. President John Hamilton welcomed the group and our three guests, M.L. Spear, Bruce McQuaid, and Renee Farinella.

for Concours competition, but for the daily rigors of everyday driving. Demonstrations will be done by PCA Member Andy Kay of Blue Ribbon Detailing. Jack also reminded us about the upcoming Autos in the Park event June 3 at the Cooper Clinic. That was a great event last year and I am looking forward to it again this year.

Secretary Madhu Rao reminded the board that planning for our 2013 election starts in June by identifying a nomination committee to manage the election process. Stay tuned for more information.

Pat Friend shared an update about several new Slipstream advertisers. That is great news! Pat also mentioned that we are current on advertising receivables. That is great news, too!

VP Tom Minnella noted he has followed up on the insurance certificates for upcoming events. He also discussed the Possum Kingdom area as a possible venue for upcoming events later this year or next year.

Bruce McQuaid, another one of our guests, was interested in attending a board meeting and finally was able to do so. Bruce, we are glad you could join us.

Newsletter Editor Carey Spreen updated the board that Slipstream production is going well. He is moving forward the mailing date by a few days so you can get your monthly copy earlier. Next up was M.L. Speer, who stated he was “enjoying the meeting.” M.L., glad you could join us. Concours Chair Jack Griffin described the annual May at Mayo’s event. This year it will be on May 5 so yes, it will truly be a “Cinco de Mayo” event. Sounds like a lot of fun. I have heard about the worldfamous margaritas and Mexican food served there from people who previously attended. That sounds good to me and so does checking out the early model Porsches that the Mayo team is working on. It’s a busy month for Jack as he is hosting a tech session on May 19 at “Jack’s Garage” on the “The Art of Preparing Your Car,” not just 8

DE Chair Lori Mauthe noted that April Drivers’ Education event was profitable. That is great news! She also described the recent training/coaching for instructors as being well received with several comments and compliments. She mentioned that having separate registration categories for instructors is going well. Lastly, Lori enthusiastically described the registration for the June 2 DE which continues to build. If you are interested, please sign up as soon as you are able to for this one day event. The entire DE team really does go to great lengths to provide the Maverick Region the best driving experience. Hey Lori, can you do anything with the 635 corridor? Tourmeister John Harvey was very happy with the turnout for the April Bluebonnet drive. A total of 46 cars and 85 people participated. There were four group leaders to help manage the flow. John also reminded everyone about the May 27 Sunday Drive, which has an

May 2, 2012 Introduction to Autocross event incorporated into the tour. Lastly, he reminded us about the June 24 Echo Springs Blueberry Farm Sunday Drive. For more information visit http://www.echospringsblueberryfarm.com/Map.asp. Renee Farinella, our third guest, shared some ideas about regional communications by increasing our “share of voice” with the local media. Renee, we are all “ears” about this idea. Membership Chair Lisa Steele was excited to annonunce that our total membership exceeded 2100 for the first time ever! Social Chair Christy Payne mentioned that the 50 Years of Porsches car, food, and photo event at the Texas Motor Speedway on April 28 had 292 attendees. She also noted the event was profitable. As many of you know, Christy and the rest of the social team do a great job planning and managing our events. If you have an interest to help out, please let them know. Our “Help Wanted” sign is up all year! PR Chair Linda Bambina added that it was great to see some surprise faces (from the past and present) show up at the 50 Years of Porsches event. I had the opportunity to attend and I am glad I did. There are some great Porsches in our region and I enjoyed meeting their owners at this event. The food was excellent and I appreciate the dedication of all of the volunteers. Charlie Davis took some great aerial photos from a boom crane of the Porsches. Kudos to Mark Steele who took some great “land based” photos at the event as well. You will be seeing the photo and article in upcoming issues of Slipstream and Panorama. Check the Maverick

Region website for additional details and the opportunity to order a poster of the photo shoot. Wendy Shoffit planted a couple of “idea seeds” for the consideration of the board. She described an idea to hold a Porsche Car Show, inviting advertisers to participate to increase their recognition. Regarding advertising she suggested capturing the website hits for advertisers to generate a return on investment analysis. It was decided to create a subcommittee to discuss this. She also asked if there is interest in reprinting the membership directory. Wendy – my two cents is yes. It would be great if we could download this or create a Maverick Region application to quickly connect with each other and access the major functionality of the website. Lastly, Wendy mentioned that over 30 Mavericks will be travel-

ing to Salt Lake City for Parade this year. Due to his position at the table following immediately after Wendy, James Shoffit admitted, “I got nothing.” Robyn Howard said the Autocross school in April had a good turnout and that she is looking for instructor help. She noted that the next Time Trial and Autocross weekend is May 26-27 in Mineral Wells. Al Silva concurred and noted that volunteers are needed and encouraged to help out at Autocross and Time Trial events. John Hamilton thanked everyone for their help and participation in region events. Meeting adjourned at 8:40pm.

riendship, Friendship, Just the perfect blendship. When other friendships will be forgot . . . ours will still be hot. Cole Porter’s lyrics said it seventy years ago (and Larry Ramsey and I sang it at Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s), but I really felt it when I learned from Champion-Registrar Wendy Shoffit that all 50 cars had indeed checked in for the once-in-a-lifetime 50th Maverick Anniversary photo shoot and car show. They came! Everyone came! It was the perfect blendship of friends and those amazing cars. One of the main reasons I was so excited (ecstatic, actually) was that for the last three weeks prior to the event, 23 of the 50 cars had to cancel. Keep in mind that I had been getting commitments from our past Presidents, Slipstream Editors, Selcer Award Winners, Board Members, Past Parade chairs, people who have been major contributors and folks who have been highly involved in the club for years and years at one time or another. Finding replacements meant I just had to dig a bit deeper and talk to more people! I turned to some Major Mavs for help. A

huge hug goes out to James Shoffit who has one of those overflowingwith-information-brains and helped me find a number of owners/ cars that would fit empty spots. But one of my Major Mavs was Ed Mayo. He knows members from waaaay back, AND he knows cars and whether or not a certain year can substitute for another year (yes, I HAD to fudge a little on certain years!). He also ended up bringing four of his early 911s to the shoot. FOUR. Now finding trusted and available drivers to a last minute all day event? Well, that’s a whole ‘nuther story! We didn’t have a Long Distance Award, but if we had, there would have been several contenders: Richard & Carole Diller from Killeen; Tannia Dobbins from Florence, south of Killeen; Charlie and Teri Davis from Weatherford; Joel Nannis from Rockwall . . . and Jan (Mayo) Michel from Colorado Springs! Over 80% of Maverick Region Presidents, starting with Don Spaulding (’72), were present. Barry Gibbs (’73) had suggested we take an “encore” of the photo that appeared on the ’83 Slipstream cover (and again on our February 2012 cover). So we took that one and then gathered all the other Past Presidents for more pictures. Talk about a “family reunion!” Astounding. Take a look at the list of the owners of the 50 cars (OK, 51 cars, since we had a 1962 AND a 2012) for our 50th.

S

aturday morning I was contemplating going on the Sunday drive since I hadn’t been to one in a couple of years and I always had such a good time driving with a group. This one started right here in Fort Worth, and just a few miles from my house, so I couldn’t use that as an excuse not to go. Everyone on the Sunday drives is sociable and is there to have fun. Each Porsche owner has a special story to tell about their car, and one always learns something interesting about the people they meet.

an astonishing number of Porsche cars. A complete range of Porsches was represented including a Cayenne and Panamera. There were so many beautiful cars it is hard to mention them all, so I won’t even try. So off we go! We were zipping down these beautiful winding roads at a brisk pace. I’m not sure what roads we were

Dee Luxbacher checks in with Barb Minnella Anyway, I had my head into driving. Before we left I think someone said we were around Eagle Mountain Lake, which sounded right. I have been around these roads for years, but never like this! We were twisting, turning, and having a blast. I was bonding once again with my car.

In the meantime I had to make plans to clean my car and get ready for Sunday. My husband and son were at a scouting event and my son had homework he needed to finish Sunday. I really don’t like going to functions by myself, but my husband encouraged me to go because he knows how much I love to drive my 911 Carrera S. Last year he put a new exhaust system on it and I haven’t had a chance to test it out. I arrived about 12:45 at the WalMart parking lot in Lake Worth to

Come fly the friendly skies! on because I had to concentrate. I am so sure the couple in front of me in their 991 twin turbo would be happy to know that!

We stopped in Springtown for a short break, then off we went again on 51 headed to 114. We traveled through Boyd to Aurora through Newark, close to Eagle Mountain Lake. Kind of a cool-down time. The backroads were sure fun. Next we headed for Meacham Field to the Vintage Flying museum. What a sight it was to see so many Porsche cars all lined up in front of the hanger. Airplanes and Porsches seem to go together. If you haven’t been there before, the Vintage Flying Museum is one of Fort Worth’s great historical secrets. If you are an aviation buff and enjoy vintage WWII planes, this is the place to cruise around for a couple of hours. Everyone there is a volunteer and has great passion for these ole gals.

They have pictures of “Chuckie,” a B-17G bomber that was restored here and moved to Virginia last year. Many people love this museum. One of my son’s friends just finished his Boy Scout Eagle project at the Vintage Flying museum last October. He was out there on Sunday volunteering. His Eagle project was cleaning the room that contains air-

craft engines, replacing ceiling tiles, and mounting an instructive plaque on each engine. So after a day of riding and a bit of socializing it was time to head to Joe T Garcia’s, one of Fort Worth’s mainstays, to have a great meal with friends. It is the people that make the cars so much fun! Thank you B.J. and John Harvey for including me at your table. I truly enjoyed the fellowship. And a big “Thank You” for putting this Sunday drive together. Note from your TourMeister, John Harvey: A special “thank you” to our Route Leaders and Sweeps: Brendan Eagan, Gareth Maurice, Khalid Zafar, Myra Sutton, John Hamilton, Paul Dippel, and Frank Labriola, for keeping all 57 cars and 107 people on course! HooRah!!!!!

There’s nothing like a table filled with Tex-Mex and friends after a long Sunday Drive!

Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s By Silva Cohen

inco de Mayo at Mayo’s proved once again that the Mavericks have to be the friendliest and most heartwarming group of people to ever get together over a bunch of cars. From the bounce house for the kids that also allowed adults after they had warmed up the Margarita Machine, to the Concours in the parking lot, to the buffet provided by On The Border, the stage was set for a great time. The focus of the get-together was the Concours held in the parking lot in front of Mayo Performance in Euless. Twenty five owners committed their time and effort to get their cars ready for the event. It

was my first Concours event, and it should be obvious to all that I have a lot to learn about gearheads and their passion. But I was happy to hear some of the comments of other attendees. Fifty Years of Porsches: Family Portrait at Texas Motor Speedway By Steve and Jonathan Perrin

Photos by Mark Steele

Editor’s Note: Long time Maverick Steve Perrin and his son Jon participated in this historic photo shoot, which featured a Porsche representing every year that Maverick Region has been in existence. Here are thoughts from both of them.

I were on our way to the track in a shiny, “better-than-new” 1972 911. I had told Jon that we were going to park the fifty-plus cars and then Charlie was going to take their picture with his motorized camera setup. I thought to myself that it would take a couple of hours. Jon was figuring 30-35 minutes. We were home … after eight hours!

From Steve:

I

magine if you will, our Linda Bambina all excitable and nervous. Now, for the few days immediately leading up to and including Saturday April 28, double that level of anxiety. As I understand it, as early as last October, Linda had arranged commitments for a representative car for each of the 50 years that Maverick Region has been around

From Jon:

T

Christy Payne: “Come on, come on, come on, RIGHT THERE!” for a special anniversary photo shoot. As of three weeks before the event, 23 of those cars had dropped out for various reasons. Months ago, Linda had called and asked if I could get my ‘72 911 up and running for the event, but unfortunately I had to decline as it was too much to do in too little time (shamefully, it has been dormant for over 10 years). Just days before the event I received another Lindacall with a proposition: Ed Mayo’s 1972 911 was available but it needed a driver, as he was already driver/ resource stretched after already providing three other cars. Would I be willing to drive Ed’s “Elvira”? YES, YES, YES!

So Saturday morning Jonathan and

he ride over was something to remember; the last time I was in a Porsche was well over a decade ago. Shortly after arrival, Dad and I were met by many friends of old, as well as the readily welcomed air conditioning. Linda called out for a strapping young man to help her arrange water bottles into tables, after the facility didn’t follow through with providing furniture in the clubhouse, and I just happened to be there. After that, we were all treated to a lunch of hotdogs, something that of course I would take any day of the week, and after a while I caught on to the theme of German cars, food, and drinks.

When I was told about the idea of what we were going to do I could hardly believe the amount of planning that must have gone into the project. The meticulous lining up of the cars by their headThe tell-”tail” look of ‘80s 911s lights took several After a while spent chatting with hours, but it was worth people that we haven’t seen in it after you got out of quite a while, we all drove into the the cars and admired

the large final arrangement. The complete cooperation and understanding of each and every driver and event staff member was needed in order to get it right. After watching Charlie Davis flying high in the cherry-picker getting his pictures, it was finally over. Time to head back to air conditioning and more hotdogs. I definitely wouldn’t have expected the sun to be so low in the sky when we left, but in the end it was a good day, and I’ll definitely remember it.

Advertiser of the Month: Park Place Porsche By Linda Bambina, PR Chair

P

ark Place Porsche has been part of the Maverick Region for more than 25 years. For those of us who were involved with the DFW ’87 Parade, we remember the original flagship Dallas area Porsche Dealership (Forest Lane Porsche) as the sponsor for the Parade volunteer workers. Besides some memorable T-shirts, the dealership hosted the 400-member Worker Party (including Mariachi Band, massive vases of yellow roses, and tables and tables of Mexican food). We packed the place, taking over the entire showroom floor and both huge staircases, spilling into the office and lobby areas upstairs and down! Little did I realize how truly undersized that earlier dealership was until I recently got a tour of Park Place Porsche. Parts Manager Randall Johnson (Maverick member for a decade) and I viewed the city-block-sized site and other surrounding Park Place facilities from the third floor of the parking garage. Provisions have been made to facilitate adding a fourth level to their parking garage when desired. Park Place Porsche is a Porsche Premier Dealer and has earned this coveted award 15 times (only 25 dealers out of 215 are awarded annually nationwide). Huge. They are also the only Texas Dealer to have ever been awarded both Premier Dealer status & the Porsche Perfect Service Award simultaneously. Again: Huge. Recently, Park Place BodyWerks won the collision repair industry’s first National FIT Sustainability Award. Doubly Huge. Park Place Dealerships has over 1,500 employees, and was voted one 18

of the Top 100 Best Places to Work in D/FW. There is virtually nothing that Park Place cannot do for you and your Porsche (or other high end European car). They provide an astounding variety of services all handled on site: paint touch-up, wheel repair, window tinting, and they can install a variety of clear bra products. They can wrap just the outside mirrors and headlights, or literally cover the entire car with clear bra paint protection, or even race graphics if you wish. They will fill your tires with nitrogen, or align and corner balance your street and/or race car suspension for track use. They can even arrange transport for your car to the tracks of your choice and provide full trackside tech support at your next Club Race or DE for you or your race group as needed, through their Motorsports program. Randall, Motorsports Team techs Charlie Lacy and Steven Taylor, along with other employees, and many of their clients, are regularly active at various track events - Autocross, Drivers’ Ed, and Club Racing - they know “serious fun.” The parts department walls are covered with their magnetic car numbers, while Randall’s race schedule is colorcoded and kept by his computer next to pictures of his Porsches. He talks, walks, and breathes Porsche! Service is key at Park Place and is headed by Service Director and 29-year veteran Terry Powell. He and his team of Porsche-certified technicians all are trained at dedicated Porsche technical centers, and have unique expertise in all aspects of maintaining and servicing Porsches that you won’t find at independent shops. Recently Park Place has expanded their newest multi-acre complex in Grapevine to include

a second BodyWerks shop. With the two shops, their Body Shop Director, Eric McKenzie, revealed that they are #1 in the country for both volume & dollars of body work and paint on high-end European vehicles. In 2009, Patrick Huston was promoted to General Manager of Park Place Porsche. He joined Park Place in 2003 as the Porsche Pre-Owned Sales Manager and helped build Park Place Porsche into the #1 Pre-Owned Porsche dealer in the country. With his leadership Park Place has continued to garner National Awards, and consequently they have an over-the-top inventory of both new and Pre-Owned Porsches. We’re talking acres of amazing cars. Park Place Porsche and its predecessors have sponsored events of all kinds for fully half of Maverick Region’s existence. Besides providing monetary support annually for several driving events, social events, three-day weekend Round-Ups, as well as two Porsche Parades, they have also given generously from their Premier Porsche Goodie Store for all of our Founder’s Day events since we started the charity raffles and silent auctions over 18 years ago. For those of you who came out in April to the 50 Years of Porsche Car Show at TMS, you know that they were our Premier Sponsor AGAIN, for this amazing and historical event! To quote Ken Schnitzer, Chairman and CEO of the Park Place Dealerships, “Excellence is hundreds of small things done right.” We thank Park Place Porsche for all the hundreds of small things done right for our Maverick Region members over the past 25 years.

You don’t have to pay a premium for premium porsche service. Give us a chance to meet or beat your service estimate, and get a Master-Certified Porsche experience. At Park Place Porsche, you’ll find high-performance service at competitive prices. Our Master-Certified technicians and advisors work exclusively on Porsche vehicles, giving them a focus and passion that can’t be matched. We also have the only on-site Porsche body shop in the area, giving you comprehensive service, all in one place. Best of all, we’ll try to meet or beat any service estimate from another shop. So you can enjoy all of the exceptional Park Place service and amenities—like complimentary Porsche loaner cars and hand car washes—and spend less than you’d think.

Maximum Smiles per Mile: Drivers’ Ed Maverick Style By Lori Mauthe

A

ny Drivers’ Education (DE) event is a success due to the coordination and cooperation of our DE Committee members to manage the complexity of the various aspects of registration, hospitality, instruction, and safety. I want to express my sincere thanks to the DE Committee for their contribution, and to our driver participants for this, my first event as your DE Chair. Here is how the weekend unfolded. Park Place Porsche was our proud sponsor for the April DE at Motorsport Ranch on the 3.1-mile course. Thank you so much Park Place for your setup of the decorative flags to welcome our guests. Park Place provided fantastic long-sleeved polo shirts for every participant along with expertise for our Porsches, and a shady place to visit between run groups in the paddock. While drivers and instructors gathered and the sun rose, they enjoyed coffee and donuts sponsored by Falgout & Associates, P.C. Thank you to Jim Falgout, Region Treasurer, for the energy start to our day. Our day began with Registrar Joel Nannis, assisted by Region President John Hamilton, greeting the participants and handing out packets. Thanks to Wendy Shoffit for her help in the preparation of individual registration packets for each entrant. The Novice and Intermediate run groups were full, and our Advanced run groups were very well attended. After our drivers’ meeting, the participants and instructors got their cars ready for a great day of run group sessions. The weather cooperated famously in spectacular 20

Texas Spring time fashion for which Joel accepts responsibility. He tried to order up a cloud in the afternoons; however we settled for a nice breeze. After registration, Joel took his next position for the weekend at Black Flag. Once the drivers meeting is concluded, no driver wants to have to talk to Joel again, because that means that they either had an on-track event, or something is wrong with their car and the corner workers signaled them to the pit lane.

participants learn and grow in their track aptitude, they can go through a check ride process and progress to the next group level.

John Sandusky, our Chief Driving Instructor (CDI), organizes our four instructor teams led by Mike Langford, David Hodges, Rocky Johnson and Ron Bibb.

Meanwhile the other groups have their initial run session. Lisa Steele did a great job as our Grid Master, substituting for our regular Travis Howard, who could not join us. The Grid Master manages the preparation and release of the run groups to the track. This person gives the 5- and 3-minutes-to-go signals, and then does a final check to make sure that all doors are closed, helmets are strapped on, windows are down, and seat belts are fastened tight. Lisa was our added ray of sunshine with a smile that brightens everyone’s day!

Instructors ride with our drivers in the Novice and Intermediate sessions to guide and coach them on safety, track position, driving the line and car management. We have a team of Advanced Instructors (AI) with lead Jim Buckley for our Advanced groups. At this event we introduced a sign-up book at the Team 4 station, where our Advanced drivers could reserve a session with the Advanced instructor of their choice throughout the weekend. Our AIs were very busy as most drivers took advantage of the AIs’ expertise, and improved their skills and performance. No matter how many track days you have under your belt, there is always more to learn and improve, and we encourage experienced drivers to join us to leverage our AI team expertise. As our

Our Driver Education events follow a schedule that sequences through our run groups which are categorized by color. Green is our novice group for first-time and early experienced participants, and their day begins with a classroom session led by John Sandusky on the basics of the track layout, instruction on driving the line, and terminology.

Our Instructor group is the Red run group, and they are first on track to check out track conditions and get the adrenaline pumping. Next out is the White group, our most advanced driver team. They are experienced enough to not require an instructor, although they often take the opportunity for assistance from our AI team. Blue, our Intermediate group, is next

out. Each driver in the Blue group has an instructor in the car for the first session to check-ride for those previously certified as Solo; otherwise, instructors are assigned to stay with the drivers until they are ready for a Solo check ride. The fourth group is Yellow, our Advanced Intermediate group, whose members, along with White, are eager to learn as much as they can from our AI team members. When the Green and Blue drivers arrive at the staging area, called “grid,” they are greeted cordially by their instructor to prepare for the weekend and discuss what the goals are for each driver and ensure the car is ready. Each run group has their time in classroom. Thanks to our classroom instructors: Craig Janssen provided advice and answered questions for the Blue group; Yellow was led by Keith Olcha, and White by Brian Amond. I heard

rave reviews all weekend with the only request being that the classroom sessions last longer! So by now the Green classroom session has concluded and the drivers arrive at grid, the first time without helmets so that they can have a clear look at the track at slower speeds. The instructor typically drives the first one or two laps, and then the student drives for the rest of the sessions. The remaining three sessions are run with helmets on, and the speed and performance improves throughout the day. Each run group has four sessions each day. Based on driver capability and demonstration of awareness and skill, a driver and instructor may mutually agree that the time has come for a test to promote the driver to the next higher run group. The test is called a check ride, where another instructor or team lead will ride with the student

to determine if they indeed qualify to be promoted to the next run group. Progressions are Green to Blue, Blue to Blue Solo, Blue Solo to Yellow, and Yellow to White. The check ride is also the team lead’s way of evaluating the effectiveness of the instructors on their team as we all strive to improve. Our lunch break featured fine cuisine catered by Del Norte, arranged by Lisa Steele, also our Hospitality Queen for the day. We had tables and chairs arranged under the covered paddock by the clubhouse so that our drivers could socialize and mingle with the instructor teams and corner workers. During lunch we feature our Charity Parade Laps, which provide the chance for drivers and spectators to drive the track at street speeds, and which raise funds for the region charity, the Hope Shelter.

continued from previous page Thanks to Luke Edson, our equipment manager, for transporting the safety radios and supplies, and assisting with the setup of the lunch area. And speaking of corner workers, thanks to Bob Benson, who arranges and manages our track safety with a team of trained corner workers who diligently watch our cars on track and communicate via flags and radios. Our goal is to make the day very boring for them, which we did! While there were a few spins and off-track events, we ran on schedule both days with no significant delays. Jim Buckley is leading a program to expand and enhance our instructor teams. The certification to be a Driving Coach includes classroom and on-track exercises, which are designed to improve and evaluate the quality and quantity of instructors, and in turn

increases our event capacity for more drivers. This Driving Coach certification program is receiving rave reviews for the first two occurrences in our 2012 season, and we look forward to the fall to have more existing instructors and recruited candidates to have the chance to go through the Driving Coach certification program. Maverick Region DEs are open to cars other than Porsches, as long as they pass the tech qualifications and inspections. Registration for each event opens approximately one month prior (we will send out email notifications), so check http://clubregistration.net to sign up. All events will offer the option to pre-purchase lunch served at the track, and Charity Parade Laps during the lunch hour. Sept 15-16 Sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche at Motorsport Ranch on the 1.7-mile course run counterclockwise. Come out and try to

qualify for Solo status, so that you can also join the October event on the same track configuration. We will feature a track walk at the end of the run groups Saturday, with narration provided by our instructor team. A BBQ dinner provided by our sponsor Boardwalk Porsche will close out our Day 1 activities. Oct 27-28 Sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche at Motorsport Ranch, when we will feature Maverick Region’s event in the National Club Race Series and DE sessions for certified Solo drivers only on the 1.7-mile course counter-clockwise. Nov 10-11 Sponsored by Park Place Porsche at Eagles Canyon Raceway. It will be a great way to end our 2012 season on this challenging 2.5-mile course. Porsches, sunshine and good friends is what our club is all about. We hope to see you at a future event.

Member Spotlight: Cyndee Ebeling By Lisa Steele, Membership Chair

T

his month’s spotlight is on Cyndee Ebeling, who is the proud owner of a 2008 Cayman S. Her niece and nephew have even given it the name “Sally” from the movie Cars. Cyndee’s favorite features of the car are the sport exhaust and the manual transmission. She loves the way Sally sounds when she accelerates and revs the engine…vroom! Cyndee and her husband Mark have an “empty nest” and they love trying new places to eat. This adventurous couple will jump in Sally and go anywhere to eat a great meal. A friend told them how good the food was in Santa Fe, so Cyndee and Mark packed up the car and

took Sally on her first road trip. This lovely couple has lived in Valley Ranch/Las Colinas for over 20 years. They recently joined our Maverick Region and have already jumped in or should I say “driven in” a Sunday drive and a Drivers’ Education event. Watch out boys, Cyndee would like to someday drive competitively…a woman after my own heart! When Cyndee is not jumping in her car for a great meal, she manages a home and gift showroom at the World Trade Center in Dallas. Mark and Cyndee also love to travel. They have been to Germany and would like to go back again someday to purchase a Porsche and drive it on the Autobahn. Please join me in giving Cyndee a warm Maverick WELCOME!

April Happy Hour: Uncle Julio’s By Mike Farrar

T

he club turned out in force at this month’s Happy Hour, held at UncleJulio’s in North Dallas. Originally, we had confirmed 30 attendees with Uncle Julio’s, but many more showed up. In fact, the attendance was so great that members resorted to commandeering tables recently vacated by other patrons in order to have a place to sit. The ebullient Linda Bambina was on hand selling $50 raffle tickets for the upcoming drawing for a trip to Germany for two. Only 300 will be sold, so anyone interested in a chance to win this wonderful trip had better hurry up . . . if it’s not already too late! The crowd had a great time meeting and visiting with many new members, and with a track event scheduled the following weekend, it turned into an opportunity to promote the Region’s “other” activities. The club is involved in many different activities, ranging from these social gatherings to the hard-core track-junkie events, and more importantly to the support of our Region’s favorite charity, the Hope Shelter.

We even had a Yankee join the festivities, all the way from New York! Actually, he had lived in NY and had been a member of Connecticut Valley Region, but he got here as quickly as he could. Several of the attendees excitedly discussed their upcoming trip to Fiesta New Mexico in Mike Lockas brought his parents to show them the Santa Fe during Memotype of people with whom he associates rial Day weekend, sponsored by Roadrunner Region PCA. Unfortunately Porsche is not exactly dominating in the American Le Mans Series so far this season,

John Poakeart, formerly of Connecticut Valley Region PCA

Paul and Veronica Ramos talking to BJ Harvey but the Porsche Club definitely dominated the scene at Uncle Julio’s in north Dallas. While the venue and location can sometimes determine the number of attendees at activities like this, we encourage you to participate when you can, to share the common passion of Porsche shared by all of us. Join us on Thursday, June 21, for our Happy Hour at the Trinity Hall Irish Pub!

Tech Corner: Much Ado about Nothing! By Ed Mullenix

I

think The Bard would agree. A couple of times this year I have had clients come to the shop and ask me to put nitrogen in their tires. My reply is that I use a special blend of gases: 80% nitrogen, 19% oxygen, and 1% other gases. This special blend is more commonly known as AIR. Several area repair shops are touting “they use only nitrogen for tire servicing.” The equipment these shops are using produce nitrogen gas that is only about 85-95% pure. Some oxygen does get into their servicing equipment. Nitrogen in tires has its roots in aviation. When airplanes started flying higher than 12,000 feet, the pilots and aircrew would suffer

from a condition called hypoxia (oxygen-deficiency). A mild case gives you a headache, while a severe case makes you take a nap at the controls (recall Payne Stewart a few years ago) and become seriously dead. Researchers discovered that if you inhaled pure gaseous oxygen, you would not get hypoxia until you reached an altitude of 50,000 feet. Oxygen for aviators, hospital oxygen, and the oxygen in my welder are all produced cryogenically, i.e., cooled under pressure until the desired gas liquefies. Since air has only 19% oxygen, what does one do with all of the nitrogen that is produced as well? Unlike air, pure nitrogen does not support combustion. High speed aircraft have a tendency to overheat their brakes, and sometimes the fluid in the brake systems will ignite

causing a brake fire. What better gas to put into an aircraft tire than non-burning nitrogen. Commercial nitrogen is called anhydrous, meaning that the moisture is removed. Since there is no moisture in the gas, it also prevents rusting of steel lines and valves. So why put it in car tires? Race cars started using nitrogen in their tires back in the 1950s for the same reason that aircraft do. In the event of a fire that would spread to the tire and cause it to blow out, pressurized air would contribute to the conflagration, while a tire filled with nitrogen would have a suppressing affect. If you are a club racer or serious DE-er and worry about a fiery crash and burning tires, by all means,

continued from previous page put pure nitrogen into your tires. I have also heard folks say that tire pressures are more stable with N2 than with air. In order to get that engineering degree hanging on my wall, I had to pass a bunch of chemistry and physics classes. A favorite topic was gas behavior under varying temperature and pressures. Until you compress them or cool them sufficiently to the point that they are thinking about becoming a liquid, gasses, be they nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, or air, all behave according to the “ideal gas

26

law” and its mathematical equation PV = nRT In a car tire, you can calculate the temperature of the gas by looking at the pressure change. For the purposes of this discussion, the “V” in the equation is the volume contained by the tire and wheel; “n” is the chemical amount of the gas in moles; “R” is the ideal gas constant; “P” is pressure, which can be whatever your tire gauge says (psi, kPa, bar); and “T” is temperature in degrees Kelvin, named after the dude that did all of this boring research in the 1800s.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 0 degrees Celsius and 273 degrees Kelvin. If you have 36 psi in your tires and it’s 32 F outside, at 104 F (40 C, 313 K), your tire pressure increases to 41.3 psi, according to the equation Pi/Ti = Pf/Tf which in this example would be 36 psi/273 K = “X” psi/313 K And to end the suspense, solving for “X” results in 41.3 psi. All of this is terribly exciting! OK, maybe not. But think about how exciting it would be NOT to spend $40 to inflate your tires!
