Mike Brodigan, President

an, it’s cold out! I am writing this in early February, so I hope by the time this reaches our mailboxes the cold weather will be just a distant memory. My problem is I have to face the cold again soon. Let me explain. The great news is we will be celebrating our mom’s 90th birthday this month (isn’t that great!); the bad news is we are celebrating it in my frigid hometown of Fargo, North Dakota. (This is where I get “I have never met anyone from North Dakota.”) My mom loves Fargo. She wears a button that says “minus 33 degrees keeps out the riff raff.” Keeps normal people out, too. If I remember correctly, they have spring temperatures sometime in July. You would think that I could deal with it because I spent my first 30 years there, but all that has done is make me appreciate Texas. In Texas I can drop the top down in my Boxster all 12 months, we have driving events from February to December, and we can wash our Porsches almost anytime we want. I guess this is the long way to say I love Texas in the springtime. So ladies and gentleman, take the time to enjoy the weather and your awesome P car and go outside and have some fun! If you need some ideas, check our website and click on the events tab. This month is loaded with activities including a Tech Session, an Autocross School, a Sunday Drive, and even a new monthly Trivia contest! Our second Driver Education event is in April, as is our first Autocross and Time Trial events. Spring is also the time of year for street festivals. Two of my favorites are Main Street Days in Grapevine, and the Fort Worth Art Festival. All the street food, music, things and people to see are a blast. I hope they can resurrect Mayfest again this year. It’s a neat place to take your kids. The Celtic festival in Dallas is a can’t miss, and the St Patrick’s Day parade down McKinney Street is a great party. I hope to see you soon, out enjoying the Texas spring.

ow, I think we did it again! A full issue dedicated to Porsche and those known as Mavericks. With the year in full swing, there are a lot of activities to pick from including social events, driving events, even cleaning events. After our recent record snow fall, I’m sure spring will soon be in the air waiting for the sound of our flat sixes or the newer V8’s. So if anyone has stories to share, this is the place. Remember, if you have done something Porsche related and had fun doing it, send me a write up. It’s always great to hear about your adventures. I’ll publish them in the coming months for others to enjoy, too. There are two new Slipstream advertisers I’d like to mention. First, there is one a lot of you are probably familiar with and that’s Texas World Speedway. They have a world class facility and host many track events. Secondly, there’s Yellow 7 a leader in marketing, advertising, design and search. They were selected by Goldline Research as one of the 10 Most Dependable Web Design Firms of Texas. So if you have a need for speed or more business, support our advertisers. It’s not just the cars!

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

M

r. President Mike Brodigan started off the meeting with giving a BIG Thanks to Christy for a great New Member Party! With 106 people in attendance, this was by far the most well attended New Member Party we have ever had. Fabulous job Christy!! Mike also reported that the Zone 5 Meeting will be held on March 27th in San Antonio. Regional issues are discussed at this meeting and it is open to anyone who would like to attend. If you are interested, please contact Mike Brodigan or James Shoffit (our Zone 5 Representative). Mike’s third item on his agenda was to discuss the suggestions we received from the suggestion box at the New Member Party. One suggestion was not to have a suggestion box because we are doing a great job with all of our events. Another suggestion was that the club should consider purchasing a microphone system to have at our events for people to hear various announcements, door prizes, etc. John Hamilton and Lisa Steele agreed to look into the cost of these systems. Mike finished his list of topics and then we were off to our round table reports from each chair.

Jim Falgout would like to have budget worksheets from all chairs ASAP. Jim also inquired about how the club handles promotion of car shows that are not put on through our club. After a bit of discussion, a motion was set that we should not promote other car clubs events through Slipstream or on our calendar due to space restraints. A vote was taken and all agreed on this motion. Jack Griffin reported that he has several Concours events already scheduled on the calendar. June 6th will be the Cooper event at the Cooper Aerobics Center. On October 9th, a Concours will take place at the Swap Meet at Zims. Jack is also trying to arrange something with Fifth Gear but it is yet to be determined at this time. Ed Mullenix announced that there is a tech session scheduled for March 13th at Autoscope. The dyno pulls will be open from 9:00am-12:00pm. The GM Steve Foreman will also be picking up the lunch tab at Babe’s in Carrollton. Please RSVP to make sure you get an opportunity to get your car on the dyno. Ed and Clint Blackman have joined together to bring you a Tops and Dogs tech session on May 8th. If you own a car with a convertible, this day is for you. There will be cleaning supplies available to you on this day to get your car in tip “top” shape. Pat Friend reported that the Goodie Store conversion is very close and members can see a sample of what the site will look like at mav.webstore.us.com. This site will accept PayPal. Bob Lewis reported that the Happy Hour at Blue Mesa had a very good crowd of 40 people. February’s HH was at iFratelli and the Happy Hour for March will be at Uncle Julios. Teri Davis wanted to give everyone a heads up that the 2011 Parade site is in jeopardy. She will keep us posted with any changes. Charlie Davis announced that he can no longer be responsible for getting the Truxster to various events due to health reasons. It will be the responsibility of the Autocross Chair and Time Trial Chair to make arrangements for someone to drive the Truxster to their events. Charlie has graciously offered to keep the Truxster parked at his home for the time being until other arrangements can be made. Keep yourself healthy, Charlie! Bryan Bell reported that insurance is ALL covered. He also wants to make sure that the secretary does not forget to put in the minutes that there will be NO Board Meeting before Parade in July. The secretary has done her job and can now check that off her list. Thanks, Bryan Bell, for keeping me in line! Clint Blackman reported that Sunday Drives are all scheduled. Check out the calendar and sign up for one

8

these awesome drives. Robyn Howard announced that the Driving Schools need workers, students, and instructors so please go register ASAP. Travis Howard would like for everyone to know that he has gone another month without a speeding ticket in his 996. He also noted that the Time Trials are getting closer so go get signed up. Lisa Steele announced that the Club Race is just around the corner and she is beginning to work on caterers and other hospitality arrangements. Christy Payne reported that she has LOTS of ideas for some GREAT Social Events. She is looking at combining a Ladies Spa Day with the car show already scheduled on June 6th at the Cooper Aerobic Center. They have a fabulous Spa on sight that could pamper our wonderful ladies of the Maverick Region. Christy also reported that there were 5 people who attended the Thursday lunch at Kincaids, one of whom was a new member. This is a new location so hopefully it will catch on and will have more people attending next month. Christy also brought up the idea of whether the officers should have name badges. There was a motion and a vote. Officers will get name badges. Christy reporting for Denny Payne wants to make sure that ALL chairs need to contact Denny if they have any information they need posted on the website. Please do not

assume that Denny will just know that you need something posted. Christy also announced that the current ad on the web for Habitat will change on the 15th to an ad for Autocross schools and course design. Wendy Shoffit is working on Club Race registration duties. Carey Spreen got some good feedback from people at the New (All) Members Party about possibly doing some combination Rally events with Clint Blackman and his Sunday Drives. Combination events seem to get more people in attendance. John Hamilton reported that the first DE is coming March 6th-7th. A pizza happy hour is in the works for Saturday night at the LaQuinta. The last happy hour which included a cookout by Keith Olcha was a huge success. Jan Mayo speaking for Richard Bradley asked Christy if she would write an article about the New (All) Members Party. Christy agreed to get Denny to write it. Jan Mayo reported that not all advertisers have paid so she is going to have to get out the Big Guns and get mean about collecting the money. I have seen her guns so I hope for everyone involved that you PAY quickly. We will also have two new advertisers (Texas World Speedway and Yellow 7 Interactive) that will start in March. That completes the round table discussion and it is back to Mike to announce the Mav of the Month. This month’s recipient is none other than‌Christy Payne!

Congratulations Christy!!

New (All) Members Party by Denny Payne

I

t goes without saying that a lot of us like to evangelize for the Maverick Region whenever we encounter prospective members and new Porsche owners. So what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than at a party arranged just for that purpose? The AllMember party was held on January 31st for the 3rd year in a

row at a splendid clubhouse in Keller at Heritage Trace that Rally Chair Carey Spreen helped arrange for us. In the past, we’ve referred to this event as the New Member Party, since it is primarily for the purpose of welcoming new members into the club and helping them to understand all the events that Maverick Region puts on. But we’ve noticed that it’s also one of the rare times of year that members that would normally attend only social events reacquaint themselves with fellow club members that might only participate in driving events, so it was fitting that the All Members Party kicked off 2010 with more than 100 club members in attendance. The event chairs were given name tags that said “Ask me about ____” with the name of their area of expertise filled in. They also brought all kinds of information so that new members could get their questions answered, from “What is a DE?” to “Where can I get my Porsche serviced?” to “What is the airspeed velocity of a swallow?” OK, well I got that tongue-incheek question because my name tag, along with a few others like Jan Mayo and 10

Photos by Charlie Davis

Wendy Shoffit, said “Ask me about Anything” - presumably because we frequent a lot of different club activities. Or maybe just to harass us. In any case, the name tags did seem to help “break the ice” with a lot of the new members. I saw many excited expressions on everyone’s faces as we chatted about our passion for Porsches and all the fun things we do as a club. Spread out amongst all the tables promoting Rally, DE, Autocross, Time Trial, etc. etc. was a feast of all kinds of snack food. For her first event as the new social chair, Christy Payne made sure that no one went hungry! None of the new members went home empty-handed either; they were given a Maverick Region Porsche Club license plate frame as well as some other goodies. Some also won a few of the door prizes that were given away during the party. Most importantly though, many of them resolved that they would be seeing the rest of us soon at the Autocross School or Happy Hour or a DE! So for anyone reading this that didn’t make it this time, come on out, this party’s just getting started!

So you want to drive a Racecar! by Bob McAfee

I

t’s every Porsche enthusiasts dream to drive a racecar. But how do you do that? Do you want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to have your own race team and an expensive to maintain racecar? No, probably not. But this doesn’t have to prevent your dream from becoming reality. So what do you do? Well, with the advent of the new and fast growing Spec Boxster series you can go racing with a small investment of time and money. What is a Spec Boxster? That is a good question, one that can be answered many ways. The purpose of this class of racing is to keep the cars relatively equal and to put emphasis on the driver’s abilities, not the size of the driver’s wallet. While a few Spec Boxsters are still street legal, most of these cars are built as track-only race cars. There are some choices that are up to the driver, but the rules require some specific modifications to be made. This limits the cost of building the car while making them safer and more reliable. Where do you get a Spec Boxster? If you have the time and skills you can build your own. For those that don’t, there are companies that can build the car for you. RAC Performance is one of many builders all across the country that build these race cars to the same specification, so you can race them locally, or race against drivers in other parts of the country. Whether you choose to build it or have it built, the first step is to choose a “donor car.” It has to be a 1997-1999 Boxster with a 5-speed manual transmission. How do you choose the right car? The main thing to consider is the drive train. You’ll want to make sure that the drive train in your donor car is stock. A lower mileage well maintained car is the best choice. The body and paint condition are a moderate priority, while the interior doesn’t 14

Part I

matter, as most of it will be removed. Since these cars have been around a long time low mileage Boxsters are getting harder to find. This isn’t a big concern since a lot have been raced with over 100,000 miles on them. There are things that can be done to help the longevity of the engine and transmission. Most of the companies that build Spec Boxsters can also acquire a donor car for you, if you can’t find a good one on your own. Now that you have your donor car what do you do? First thing is stripping out the interior and removing the entire cabriolet top. This helps in getting the car down to race weight and to make room for the roll cage and race seat. If the removed parts are in good condition, you may be able to sell many of them. The next step is to install a roll cage. You will need a full cage, not just a roll bar. It will need to meet strict specifications, so it is important to know the rules before taking this very important step. A bolt-in cage is allowed, but we recommend a welded-in cage as they are much safer and can be custom built to your specifications. Matt, at Lemco Motorspor ts, in Cedar Hill builds all of our roll cages to our specific requirements. We send the car to Lemco to get the cage built and fully welded in. Along with the car we send the race seat and new aftermarket hardtop so these can be fitted properly with the cage. Lemco starts with straight tubing specifically manufactured for roll cages, and then custom bends each section to fit. Once everything is fitted, it is then welded in. With this method, the car and roll cage become one unit. Up to this point, we have chosen a donor car, stripped it down, and taken care of the basic structural modifications. Once the car comes back from having the roll cage built, it is time to start adding parts and equipment onto the car, to make it race ready. We’ll continue to build our Spec Boxster in the next Issue of Slipstream.

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

M

avericks made the journey to Sebring for the largest Porsche Club race of the year and entered five cars and five drivers including my shops driver John Gladwill in the SP Box class. It was everyone’s first time driving this historic track so emotions ran high with anticipation. We knew we were entering the back yard of multiple others that were very familiar with the track and that a good outcome was going to be difficult, but worth the effort. Some friendly banter was tossed back and forth between the east coast guys, us and those that were running SP Boxsters. Driver/owners that came out were (listed in alphabetical order): John Gladwill #150, Michael Hsu (pronounced Shu) #377, Glenn Smith #717, Bill Stevens #190, and Steve Watkins #116. I must insert one thing Michael, is actually from Austin and a member of the Lone Star Region. His car has seen a lot of prep in our shop and he hangs with us so he is a Mav in my book as well. Test and tune day went well with all cars performing flawlessly. First recorded lap times were pretty conservative as the drivers learned the track. Most times were in the 2:42 to 2:45 second range during the first session. By the end of the final session that day, times were dropping into the 2:36 to 2:40 range. Pitted next to us were the guys from Werkstatt, Charlottesville. On the other side of us was Cory Jump from Planet 9 Eleven. These folks felt like extended family by the time the weekend was over. The guys from Werkstatt, brought 4 Spec Box cars and Cory had two 911’s with him. Cory won the night race in his field last year at Sebring and has been to the track many times. His input and willingness to help with anything was most valuable and so appreciated. Likewise, the guys from Werkstatt became major players in our overall outcome and also were very appreciated by us. The guys from Werstatt were just getting started in the Box class and their cars ultimately did not make the enduro. Yet it was apparent to us that they will be a force to reckon with in future meetings. They had one engine grenade with a cylinder liner failure, one started knocking and lost a rod bearing due to debris in the oil from spark plug tube damage (long story). One driver DQ’d due to an incident and I cannot remember what happened to the fourth car. We showed up with cars that had been tested, tested, retested. Our guys had managed to break just about everything that was gonna fail in the last year or so and

Nobody Is Perfect

the lessons had been learned about what works and what doesn’t. Yet, I could tell these guys “get it.” They just need time to develop as we have already done. Folks, we finished the weekend with not one single major mechanical failure in a rapidly growing class that has only just started to get going. Friday, Bill was involved in an incident that resulted in the end of his efforts. It was unfortunate and luckily his car was not really hurt at all. Before we found out he could no longer race due to the rules, I had his car repaired and ready for combat. This turned out to be an amazing turn of events that was both unfortunate for him and had all of us upset and yet presented an opportunity to keep one other car going. On Saturday, another driver hit John. The impact took out both radiators, radiator supports, bent the suspension and heavily damaged the left front fender. While John was away talking with Stewards and reporting his side of the incident we went to work. Bill gave us permission to use anything we needed from his car. So radiators etc. were removed from #190 and installed on #150 along with all the mountings. Fenders were beaten into submission, cooling system was bled and a little duct tape was used to ensure the left headlight did not leave it’s home............. The Werkstatt guys gave us full access to their alignment equipment and assisted in getting the suspension geometry corrected which was awesome! Michael’s car had developed two problems as well during the last couple days. Traqmate data logger suddenly

did not work and was blowing fuses. The wire harness was damaged as well, due to someone, (I’ll not name them here Michael) replacing the fuse with a larger component that overwhelmed the 1.0mm wire cross section. Wiring burned from inside the car all the way out to power source under March 17

Sebring Rambling continued...

front hood. With the use of a Volt/OHM meter I finally tracked the short to the Traqmate factory connector. Inside the connector the metal studs the wiring is attached to were intermittently touching. Once isolated, we ran new circuits and got things going. Next his exhaust broke and was emitting heat towards the bank one side of the trans mount melting the rubber surroundings. John had indicated earlier in development of Michael’s car that that system looked weak. Plus one failure had already occurred during previous track sessions a few weeks before. The guys from Werkstatt jumped right in and gave us the exhaust off the car that was on their trailer with the blown engine. How cool is that? Sunday rolls around and here we go to the enduro. Glen had been getting quicker and quicker all weekend, his car was performing perfectly. Jay was having the same luck. Lap times were coming down for everyone. Michael was solid with his repairs and his times were right in there

18

with everyone else. John seemed to be on a mission as his times consistently stayed one to two seconds ahead of the entire field. By the time the flag dropped, we had gone from 12 cars in SP box class to six. Two cars were out due to incidents and disqualification from running the rest of the weekend and four with major mechanical failures. The end result is that we sent the east coast guys home, licking their wounds beating them at their home track. Mavs took 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th. 1st place went to John Gladwill as he set the Sebring SP Box lap record during the race. Of course that timed lap was the fastest lap for any SP Box in the enduro at 2:32.05 seconds. He was flying! 3rd place went to Steve Watkins. Steve should have taken 2nd as he was quicker than the car that took 2nd. But due to pit stop timing problems he came out late. AAAArrrgggghhh. It was up to the drivers to time their

entry/exit and he had a bad moment. Steve was almost like a Ninja during the whole event. John had told me Steve was really, really quick and could easily win the class. He did win one of the sprint races though. 4th place went to Michael Hsu. This was only his second race ever and he is going to be a great competitor in the future. We noticed that Michael became very quiet 10 or so minutes before time to go out for any session. He seemed to be going over the track in his mind and visualizing what was about to take place. I found that to be quite interesting.

are) for all the work you did. This would have been near impossible to pull off without you two. I hope you guys wanna do it again next year. Now, John and I have decided we have to go back next year. I think two transporters may be needed as this class is growing rapidly. Gotta challenge the east coast guys again and let them have a year of development to see who sorts things out the best. Hummmmmmmm. OK we did not sweep the top five, but nobody is perfect. Having a lot of fun and of course still rambling along! Cliff

5th place went to Glen Smith. In my estimation Glen may have been the most studious of the group. He was working carefully and methodically. I found myself looking to him for data as he always was gathering information and studying everything. Glen just got better and better every time he went out. He battled some handling problems early on. Shock adjustments got him back on point. Many thanks to Gary and Bryan (you know who you

Member Spotlight: Don Butler by Andrea Bell

T

his month, I am pleased to introduce you to one of our new members, Don Butler. Don is the proud owner of a silver 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet. It has 79k miles and Don has owned the car since 2005. He’s actually the car’s third owner and reports that the car came originally from Park Place Porsche. Since purchasing the vehicle, he has put a lot of love into it and reported, “the fastest I’ve had it up to is 120-mph, with still pedal to go.” You can almost see him smiling as he continues, “the car handles likes new and sounds absolutely thrilling, rendering that fully aspirated rumble that is signature to the model. What I love about the car is the low center of gravity, yes; the engine, yes; the handling, yes; but most particularly, I love the model. The 944 Cabriolet is a thing of grace and beauty. I read a note online from another 944 Cab owner years ago, before I purchased my car. He said that he felt that the 944 Cabriolet is so beautiful, distinct and of timeless design that every time that he looks back after parking it, he is filled with a sense of awe, like

looking at a masterpiece. I’ve come to feel the same way.” Don is divorced, 54-years young, and has three kids, all grown adults who are alumni of Texas institutions of higher education. Don has lived in Dallas for 28 years, having worked for oil and gas firms his entire career. He moved to Fort Worth in April 2009 and now works for New Tech Engineering as a Senior Project Manager responsible for acquiring all necessary regulatory and environmental permits and developing plans that are required to drill and produce oil and gas across the U.S. Don’s other interests include photography, art, music and aviation. When questioned if he would ever take flying lessons, he said, “If I could get wings on my 944, I’d be the first to drive it off a cliff, and with the top down!” Maverick Region PCA welcomes Don to our family of equally proud car owners!

Welcome to all of you – there is something for everyone in our Porsche Club and we are happy to have you. Also Norm Schilling and his wife dropped by to have dinner with us; they own Invisibra and also advertise in Slipstream – a great product to protect your treasured investment. After having just finished reading the New York Times Best seller, “In Defense of Food” written by Michael Jeanette and Scott Lamb Pollan…it is fitting to say that no matter what restaurant you visit to partake of any of the three meals, you could become an endangered species in a hurry….that is not a direct quote, but is merely a broad interpretation assimilated after reading the book. Pollan is a believer in Organic foods, and debunks many of the so called myths fostered over the years by the FDA as to what is good and bad for humans to consume. But you know what? The heck with Pollan and his prescribed diet of organic vegetables and so forth – Mexican food tastes good and we’re going to enjoy it! Maybe not every day and of course everything in moderation – so throw on another layer of cheese – we can handle it! 24

So as you read this, we will be just returning from the Palm Springs area after playing golf and just enjoying the sun and fun in California. We will miss February Happy Hour, but we will be thinking about you all – it is California and as everyone knows – California is a great place to car watch. Palm Springs seem to have a lock on Luke Edson & Clara Lewis the most 356’s on the planet and other models as well. It is big money country – so everything from Bentley’s to Porsches is on the watch list. March Happy Hour will be held at Uncle Julio’s and is to be held on 18 March at the usual time of 6:30 PM. Bring a friend along if you can, but please come. If anyone has any ideas regarding adding their favorite restaurant to the Happy Hour schedule – please feel free to email us with your recommendation(s). Remember that whatever the restaurant, it must be able to handle a crowd of between 30 and 40 people.

Cheers for now.

hen a nationally renowned fine art museum is showcasing cars as masterpieces of art in your home town you pay attention. When you are Porsche you become a patron and help welcome the cars that represent the industry’s most incredible designs. The High Museum of Art exhibition, called, fittingly, the “The Allure of the Automobile,” is sponsored by the famous German sports car company, headquartered in Atlanta, and will feature some of the World’s most rare and spectacularly conceived vehicles ever produced. Among these exquisite collectors items from both sides of the Atlantic will be a 71-year old Porsche design that is considered the precursor to all Porsches-the 1938/39 Porsche Type 64.

Tech Corner by Ed Mullenix

A

nother month has flown by. As I write this, it’s mid-February and last week’s record snow has finally melted. My 928 that lives outside on my driveway (another forever-project that hopefully will get more attention this year) was unrecognizable with a foot of snow piled up on it. If you didn’t get to attend the January New (All) Members Party, it was awesome. I got to talk “shop” with a lot of members about their cars, their car’s issues, and club activities. A common theme seemed to be where to get technical information on their respective Porsche. Sitting here at my desk, I gaze at the shop manuals that I’ve collected over the years. I pause a moment to reflect on the occasion of my 58th birthday, that I have been in the car business for 42 years! Time flies when you’re havin’ fun, doesn’t it! Anyway, I am greatly encouraged by Porsche owners wanting to know even more about their cars. I also have several decades of experience working on the “other German car” made in Stuttgart. A noteworthy observation is that Porsche owners actually read their owner’s manuals and when something is amiss, come into the shop “quoting scripture” about what the owner’s manual stated. Most owners of the “other brand” are only vaguely aware of a rather thick pamphlet that came with their car. Porsche offers shop manuals on everything that they’ve made, and while an entire set is somewhat pricey, they are readily available. With the advent of DVDs, shop manuals are now inexpensive. My favorite place to find shop manuals is ebay. Type in “Porsche manual” and an amazing array of offerings appears. Being somewhat a dinosaur, I still prefer a bound, paper shop manual. I do have several DVD versions for the newer cars because they are usually bargain priced. Even if you have no intention of ever “splitting the case” on your Porsche, having a manual that shows the steps that your mechanic will do, takes a lot of the mystery and confusion out of the process. I encourage every owner to at least get a DVD shop manual for his or her car. Put it in the glove box to ward off “evil spirits!” Another handy tool that I have discovered is the online parts catalog that is maintained by Scott Ginsburg’s folks at Boardwalk Auto Group. Type in www.boardwalkag.com, click on the Porsche logo, and when the red field appears, click on the tab at the top that says “parts and service,” then on “parts catalog.” There is an electronic catalog there for every Porsche production car ever made. Click on the catalog for your respective car and you’ll see every part, part number, and quantity of anything that goes on your car. An amazing tool! BTW… a typo appeared on the print version of last month’s Slipstream about the location of the March 13th tech session. The online version correctly states the Autoscope, Denton Drive location. Hope to see you there. Ed 28
