Š2011 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

Skilled driving wins races, but having a Porsche Certified Service and Parts department behind you is a good start. Dedicated to Porsche vehicles above all else, our staff must complete over 80 hours a year training in the latest diagnostic technology and techniques. You'll also take comfort knowing all Porsche genuine parts are factory-backed for two years when installed by Boardwalk Porsche. Better still, there is no substitute for having your vehicle serviced by professionals who not only know Porsche, but live Porsche every day.

Boardwalk Porsche would like to congratulate Denis Boulle, John Gladwill, Michael Hsu, Thomas Jones, Bernard Nussbaumer, and Greg Wallace on an impressive finish at the 48 Hours of Sebring.

ello, fellow Mavericks!

By the time you read this, the snow and ice will be long gone and we’ll have our cars cleaned up for a full season of great events. The weather was so bad in February (cue: “How bad was it?”) that we had to cancel our once-postponed board meeting. We’ll be continuing our work on our 50th anniversary celebration at the March board meeting. I hope you made it through the weather without incident. However, the weather DID clear up magnificently for our All Member Party on January 29th! As we had hoped, many new Mavericks (and a few not-so-new) came out to their first Maverick event to see what our region is all about and meet some great people who have at least one common interest: the Porsche. Great thanks go to Christy Payne and Lisa Steele and the rest of our social committee who made it all happen for us. I’ve heard first hand from several firsttime attendees that they really enjoyed meeting the people in the club and finding out more about our many different events. By the way, you do realize that we have one of the most active Porsche Clubs in the nation, right? You don’t have to attend everything, but hopefully there are several activities that you will enjoy. Speaking of active, it appears that the good weather and good driving season is upon us. Look at some of our activities for March: - Our first Sunday Drive of the year is back on March 6th - Drivers’ Education is back March 12 & 13 - Autocross is back on March 19 - Time Trial is back on March 20 And of course our very popular Happy Hour (most everyone stays for dinner) is back on March 17th at Abuelo’s. See details later in this issue of Slipstream.

Mav of the Month Speaking of this issue (and all issues) of Slipstream, I’m very happy to announce our March Mav of the Month. The winner is our amazing, tireless volunteer editor of Slipstream, Richard Bradley! He spends countless hours each month acquiring articles and photos, then moving them all around to make them fit. One of his biggest 2

jobs is BUGGING US to get our articles in on time (sorry, Richard). But he makes it happen, month-after-month. And just when he finishes one issue, he’s starting all over again on the next. So congratulations and thanks, Richard. And don’t you dare edit any of this praise out! You deserve it! For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Richard dinner for two at their award winning steak house. So THANK YOU, Mr. Editor, for all you do! John

Chris has been a Maverick for over ten years and owned a 2000 Boxster S. He recently sold it with tears in his eyes… Welcome, dream car; a 2010 Carrera Cab. Now that the tears have dried up, he’s having a blast! Here’s to sharing the fun in our events with many Mav’s throughout 2011.

John enjoys DE’s, Happy Hours, Porsche Parade and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab so that’s how it got in his blood.

know I may be a little different than most, but tell me if I’m that far off base when I tell you my heart races when I see another Porsche on the road. Am I the only one that gives the go pedal a little more with the attempt to catch up and elevate my driving experience next to another enthusiast? I found myself in this situation just the other day on my way to work when I saw a Seal Grey 996 Turbo on the road. I never got quite close enough to see the driver, but the experience was memorable. That very evening, I saw the beautiful shape of that same car in the distance, but was denied the chance to catch up again. Twice in the same day... I hope you will find this issue as interesting reading as I did at putting it together. With our National Parade coming up soon, we need to begin making plans to enjoy not only our Porsches, but also some pralines. Thank you again for choosing me as the Mav of the Month, I am truly honored.

From Pralines to Porsches… By Cole Scrogham

A

nyone who has visited Savannah knows the “Old Town” part of downtown, the riverfront area of Savannah, is replete with history. Walking on cobblestone streets and exploring storefronts and small restaurants is a calming vocation to be sure. Actually they are ballast stone streets, as English ships would leave their ballast stones in return for American merchandise, tea and cotton; but that doesn’t sound as quaint, does it? On these streets you can find handmade pralines, the curious local favorite of boiled peanuts (think Japanese edamame) and as many oysters as you care to eat. If you prefer, you can walk a block or so to the park bench made famous by “Forrest Gump,” and recall that life is like a box of chocolates. What is really surprising about Savannah, however, is that this is just the beginning of an exploration that many have spent entire lives embracing. To be in Savannah is to be in history. Everywhere you turn there is another reminder of this port city’s involvement in the growth of America. One website, http://www. savannahga.net/, literally has hundreds of destinations neatly organized alphabetically for lodging, dining, tours and other activities. Georgia’s first city has much to offer, not the least of which is that it will be shared with thousands of Porsche enthusiasts the first week of August. This is one of those areas that Porsche people will love; the Southern Hospitality that is legendary all over the world, the small and intimate settings where friends can enjoy a casual evening, and the small town feel that can lead you out of the city to country roads in a matter of minutes. Location, location, location is the focus of Parade 2011. Parade headquarters is the Convention Center which is located on picturesque Hutchinson Island. The view of downtown Savannah across the river is unforgettable. The 8

Convention Center is surrounded by Parade activity sites. The autocross will be held adjacent to headquarters, as for the first time in recent memory sufficient asphalt exists for a good size course within walking distance! But if you still need to get your track fix the local region will hold a Driver’s Education event at nearby Roebling Road Raceway the last weekend of the Parade. With the Concours event held at downtown’s Forsyth park and the Rally featuring lovely local roads, the main attractions of this year’s Parade are all in the same neighborhood! When you are ready to relax from the competitive events, feel free to take in a Carriage Ride, Ghost Tour, Fishing Trip, Dolphin Watching Expedition, Casino Boat, Local Beaches and Museums including the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum as well as local sporting events. The list goes on and on. You can try out a cooking class or go on a shrimping cruise, and of course the local towns of Bluffton and Beaufort feature very historic downtown areas as well. Savannah itself has a feel more like a big town than a bustling city, and as with many of the port cities in the South you can find open spaces quickly and easily. Tybee and Hilton Head Island are famous for their white sand beaches and slow pace…you may want to stick around the area for a while after the Victory Banquet concludes! Be sure to check out the Parade activities at http:// parade2011.pca.org so that you don’t miss any of the action. Registration begins on March 8th, so bookmark the registration site now and be ready when it opens! You will also be able to view the traditional Parade event schedule

for the week at the website, and learn about air conditioned Concours prep areas; Parade 101 classes, that make sure the first time Parade goers are prepared for the week; Hospitality and Goodie Store hours; and opportunities to volunteer as a Parade worker for some of the featured events that you may not be competing in (a great way to get a front row seat to all the action!). Other events like the popular RC Car races, Ice Cream social, Tech Academy, Art Show and Driving Tours will complement your week, unless you plan to spend it studying for the very competitive Tech Quiz…you can make your Parade experience in Savannah as action-packed and exciting, or as laid-back and relaxing as you prefer. Won’t you join us for a spectacular Parade, the highlight of our PCA experience this year? Anyone that has attended a Parade can tell you this is not just a normal multi-event weekend, this is the highlight of what PCA has to offer, full of exciting things to do and see with literally thousands of Porsche owners in attendance. Everything has been planned out and is ready for you; all you need to do is bring yourself, your family and your Porsche for a vacation experience that you won’t soon forget! Check http://parade2011.pca.org for more information and be ready to register on March 8th… see you there!

hat a GREAT party! It was so nice to see some Many thanks must be given to Christy Payne for putting very familiar faces and some wonderful new faces this wonderful party together with the yummy food, beer, mingling around the Heritage Clubhouse and wine. She also gave away in Keller. We had a good turnout of about 70 people some great door prizes and and 20 of those were “new members.” I phrase it in some special gifts to the New quotes because Members. Also, thank you to I talked with Carey Spreen for getting the several people Clubhouse for us. I feel so who have been fortunate to be a part of such members of a wonderful group of people our club for a who put so much time and while but this effort in this organization… was their first It’s not just the cars, it’s the event they have people! attended. I have a feeling we will Erika & Myra have fun talking be seeing many Patrima & Pat Patel about old times... if not all of these enjoying their first club event! “newbies” at our various events this season…so much enthusiasm in the room! As I walked around the room, I heard discussions about Sunday Drives, Happy Hours, Autocrosses, Time Trials, Drivers’ Education, Tech Sessions, and the various Social Parties we put on throughout the year. So many questions about all of wonderful events offered by this club and I had the pleasure to talk to several people about my passion within the club…driving on our two great tracks, Eagle’s C a n y o n Raceway and Motorsport Ranch on our Drivers’ Education weekends. Watch out men…several ladies are anxious to get on the track! Our 2011 Enthusiastic President, John Hamilton, had a few words for the group about all of our events and encouraged everyone to get involved in the club. Whether you want to participate or volunteer, this is YOUR club to make it a wonderful place to meet new friends and talk about our passion…Porsches! I had the opportunity to walk out front during the party and it was a glorious sight to see the diverse collection of Porsches parked in the parking lot. 10

orsche lovers everywhere can’t wait to drive their amazing cars, especially on new and twisting roads. Fiesta New Mexico has just what those enthusiasts are looking for and more. Our State’s marketing group describes our state this way: “New Mexico welcomes you with color and art, music and dance, breathtaking landscapes, and a heritage of Indian, Anglo, and Hispanic cultures that cannot be found in any other state in the union.” Over Memorial Day Weekend you will have a chance to see for yourself how true this statement really is. The Roadrunner Region of the PCA is once again hosting Fiesta New Mexico (formerly Fiesta del Porsche). This year we are returning to our State capital with our theme “Return to Santa Fe.” In addition to drive outs through some of our breathtaking landscape our event will also include a Show & Shine Concours, Autocross and a Gimmick Rally with a twist. The Schedule of events includes a welcome party at 6:00 PM Thursday, May 26th at our host hotel, the Hilton on the Plaza. Friday will feature a Show & Shine Concours at

www.fiestanewmexico.com

Museum Hill (www.museumhill.org) featuring the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the Museum of International Folk Art, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art and the Wheelright Museum of the American Indian and followed by a splendid buffet at the Musem Hill Cafe. Saturday will feature an autocross at a special location. Because we will be in Santa Fe and within walking distance to the famous Santa Fe plaza, Fiesta organizers are turning attendees loose on Saturday evening to seek out and enjoy one of the many fine restaurants that surround the Plaza. The Gimmick Rally will be ongoing throughout the weekend and conclude on Sunday. If you are not into competition, each day will also include a choice of two Tours. As always our farewell awards banquet will be held Sunday evening at our host hotel. Check our new website www.fiestanewmexico.com for registration and other information. Cliff’s Ramblings: Sebring 2011 By Cliff Blackshear

H

ere we go. Return to Sebring for the Mavs. 7 drivers have signed on including Michael Hsu, Bernard Nussbaumer, Greg Wallace, Denis Boulle, Thomas Jones, Billy Stevens and my Porsche workshop’s John Gladwill. Monday, Jan 31st the transporter showed up and picked up the cars. Greg Wallace came to the shop in his RV and hooked up to a 30 foot race car hauler belonging to Michael Hsu. We packed it full of spares, tools, gear etc. John talked to Greg and transport driver about what we consider ideal spot at Sebring paddock, hoping they could grab that location. If not available they would do what they could. Greg really made a great gesture by coming by and lending his RV for towing, caring for everything we should have at track. Michael readily offered his hauler for the effort. My dear Maverick friend Kim Zeh indicated she was willing to come out and use her photo skills to record everything. Plus about a dozen others we all know were in attendance. This is what makes a family out of a group of people going racing. Good stuff. Arrived at track Feb 3. Left 19 degree F weather behind that morning. It was mid 70’s when we arrived at the track. In DFW the winter storm from hell was occurring. Called home that night and they again reported 19 degrees. Wow. Even Houston was shutting down for bad weather. Good time for a club race in Florida Gary (a life-long friend, track rat, safety/flag guy) and I arrived at the end of test and tune day on Thursday. I was most anxious. My wish was for all cars to be performing correctly and drivers to be working on their skills. That’s all I wanted. Arrived at Chateau Elan Hotel and as we got out of car Michael Hsu cruised up on his pit bike. He was running to his hotel room to get something. He informed us of the following: John recorded a 2:31 flat that day (not official but from Track Mate Data Logger) during practice with ¾ tank of fuel. That’s over a second off the Spec Box lap record (which he set at this time last year). Oh my!!!!!! All cars were performing as designed. No problems have occurred. Honestly I really expected this kind of news but was totally paranoid something awful might have happened. That’s racing… no matter how well you prepare expect the worst is my motto…….. Michael was in the 2:34 range and unhappy. I was not worried and knew his times would improve. Besides, 2:34’s

Photos by Kim & David Wilks, RaceShotsResource.com were very competitive for Box class. He is only going to get better with experience. I installed a communications radio in his car Thursday, consisting of antenna, radio, steering wheel, microphone button and connection for helmet. It was so weird when I was installing it sitting on right floor board, temp was near 83, no ventilation inside car and I was sweating like crazy. Hours earlier I was in cold weather directing dash vents to blow at steering wheel 10/2 position to warm my hands while heading to DFW airport in 19 degree weather. Thomas seemed happy. He has just started racing in last year or so in P club like Michael and his times were amazing for someone with so much time to learn in front of him. He was turning mid 2:33’s. Wow! Denis and Bernard were learning the track and having a great time. The two of them had Topp Racing looking after their cars after we got them to the track. There was no way John and I, even with Gary’s help, could deal with 6 cars that weekend, so that was great to have Todd looking after them. Plus Billy Stevens was there with his GTC4 Cup car also with Topp. I wish he had come out with his SP Box car, but if I owned a Cup car that is what I’d take to Sebring. Good choice B i l l y. B i l l y, Denis, a n d Bernard all hung out in our paddock when not on the track. As a group we were having the time of our lives in Florida enjoying the weather. Everyone got a tan while DFW was frozen over. Greg had everything under control. His car performed flawlessly all race weekend. Just needed tire maintenance and fuel which he took care of himself. Twist the key and go. He provided so much lateral support for the entire effort. “Thank You So Much Greg.” Greg’s quiet support cannot be underestimated. It was extremely necessary and helped so many things go as well as they did. Friday was a great day for Gary and myself. No one broke anything or had an issue of any kind. John accused us of “sloughing off.” Watched night race practice Friday night. Always interesting. Witnessed a Cup 997 whose lights went completely out for about 2 seconds on entry to turn 14. Do not know who that driver was but jeeezzeee did he or she have an interesting moment….. This track is not lighted and is very dark where the lights blipped off and then on. Oh well car was only carrying about 90 mph into corner... continued March on page1719

Cliff Rambles on: continued Saturday all hell broke loose. Thomas got squeezed going into turn 5 (I think it was 5, not positive about that). In the corner just before 5 a couple cars went off track (driver’s right) and kicked up a huge cloud of dust. The huge pack of cars coming in could see near nothing in front of them. Car in front of Thomas suddenly came in from driver’s right, immediately off his nose and he had to make a millisecond decision. Have a metal to metal collision or drive off track driver’s left and deal with whatever happens. He chose driver’s left. It happened at the worst possible place on the track. A bridge was there with a tire wall protecting it. He could not avoid the tires and the impact was severe. I have seen video from a car that was behind him and it was really a very, very violent

impact. Tires from the wall flew into the air and it looked like an explosion had occurred. The whole left side of the car was severely damaged. Front nose as well with left radiator involved. Driver’s door mirror was gone, impact intruded all the way to his seat halo. There was a scrape mark on the seat from the impact. I cannot begin to explain how well all the safety equipment worked for Thomas. Cage, window net, Hans device, harnesses, drivers helmet, face shield etc. all did their job. He came away sore, yet intact. The car was another story. I simply looked at it in the Paddock and went blank as to whether we could get it put back together for Sunday or not. I needed to process what I was looking at. John had no hesitation in his assessment. “We do not show up and not

finish” was exactly what he said to us all. I had to agree as it was now a mission for all of us to get Thomas back out there. And I mean all of us. Michael also had come in with problems. While everyone else started taking Thomas’s car apart for damage assessment I looked into Michaels’ problem. He reported on the radio to me during that session that the engine just died then came back to life after a few seconds. Plus he was down on power big time. I hooked up the PIWIS system tester and found that the air mass circuit was open circuited and his car was running on a default software map. Removed top, accessed engine compartment and found MAF (mass air flow meter) connector had disconnected. Reconnected, started engine and looked at MAF numbers to see if all was well. It was not. The voltage reading was flat and completely out of range. Replaced MAF with spare we brought and all was well. Back to the Thomas situation I went. By then the guys were pulling off the front nose and getting ready to remove hood and left fender. Everything came together from there. Door was beaten out and still latched properly. Another racer that was out for the weekend due to an incident loaned us his driver’s door mirror assembly. Left fender was removed and John beat it back into a usable shape. We replaced the radiator with a spare John had that was somewhat questionable yet had been proven to be ok. It had a crack that had leaked on John’s car some time back. He repaired it with plastic repair material. Bryan Henderson had borrowed it when in a pinch and it had worked ok for him. So we installed it. Reassembled everything and bled cooling system. When we started the engine it ran terrible. Barely idled and had sluggish throttle response. Hooked up system tester and ran some checks. Found O2 sensors flat lining and indicating air leak. I had pulled the left air inlet off earlier during repairs as it was smashed in and air snorkel leading to air cleaner was continued on page 25 March 19

Member Spotlight: Jill & Scott Williams Andrea Bell, Public Relations Chair his month’s spotlight is on new members Jill and Scott Williams. Jill and Scott own a beautiful white Carrera 911 4S. They actually purchased the car on the day after Thanksgiving this past year. They went shopping for a vacuum cleaner and came home with the car. In case you were wondering, they got the vacuum too! Jill said, “It was a pricey one, that’s for sure!”

When Jill and Scott got married, they had a company car and a 1990 Mazda RX7 Turbo. It was a great, racy red car that they thought moved pretty nicely. They sold it just before the birth of their first son who is now 18. Since then, she has been driving anything that can fit 3 boys comfortably, mostly GMC Yukon XLs. Scott has been driving Mercedes sedans. Now

T

that the boys have (or will have) their own rides, they have been contemplating a revival of youthful ideas. Scott loves motorcycles, but Jill is not too keen on the danger aspect of driving around Dallas. She shared, “It’s not his driving that I’m worried about, it’s everyone else’s!” Subsequently, he always has been fond of his first car, a VW Bug. Before they were married, he almost bought a Porsche 924, but went with a Toyota Supra instead. Jill added, “This Porsche has replaced all of his desires for a motorcycle. We both feel it is VERY fun to drive and truly a sports car experience.”

As mentioned, Jill and Scott have 3 boys. They are 13 (almost 14), 15 (almost 16), and 18. Their 18 year old would have suggested we purchase a GT3, GT2 or GTS. She added,

“Maybe on the next one.” They have both been in the DFW area nearly all of their lives.

Jill and Scott work in their company and when time permits, enjoy playing golf. Of course, they have things keeping them busy with the boys. She said, “We are interested in participating in Porsche events, including driver instruction and racing on a track.” I think they are “on track” for making that happen! Look for Jill and Scott (and the boys) at a future event and please extend a warm Maverick welcome. hat a turn-out! Over 50 people came out to our first warm-weather Happy Hour of the year, including several firsttime attendees. Relocated from the San Francisco area, Ben and Suzanne Hidalgo and their niece joined us and met their Porsche cousins. David Visser brought Denise, a first time attendee, and they met quite a few friendly Mavericks (is there any other kind?) Plus, the former Miss Georgia, Kristyl Evans, was in attendance and plans to attend the Porsche Parade in Savannah this summer, so I hope you do! Our overwhelming turn-out surprised us Come join Allan, Cathy, Mark & Randy at our next Happy Hour! and the restaurant, so they kept on moving in tables and chairs to fit the demand. Fortunately, we had reserved their big room which barely held us all!

Larry & Donetta Ramsey

So we had yet another great Happy Hour get-together, where we caught up with old friends and made new ones. The rest of the February Happy Hour is best reviewed in the

pictures. See anybody you know? We can’t wait until our next Happy Hours in March at Abuelo’s and in April at the Wildwood Grill in Southlake. Hope to see you there!

This was one of our best turnouts...

Cliff Rambles on & on: continued blocked with broken debris. Cleared debris and reassembled. Only thing I could deduce was that we had some kind of intake air management issue. The car ran as if it was running lean or that is to say “false air was entering combustion chambers that MAF could not see.” Bryan Bell comes by as we are accessing engine compartment and got involved. We all agreed that it had to be an air leak somewhere based on everything we knew. All of us looked and looked in engine compartment and listened for the noise of an air leak. That’s not easy on the water cars as they already have a lot of air movement noise that is inherent to design. Finally I put my hand on throttle valve housing to rev up the engine and by shear accident I found the leak. A tube coming off intake that is normally blocked by a closed plug for race application had come off. My index finger covered it as I reached for the butterfly shaft cable mount and the engine perked right up. How funny and lucky is that? About a 3mm inner diameter pipe was allowing air into the engine that was not being managed by DME system. Next we had to find a plug. Could not find the one that came off and no one in paddock had one… Jeeeze. Then in just the right light Bryan spots it. We fish it out after some trials and tribulations. It had a huge crack in it and apparently the impact forced it loose. I repaired it with some shrink tubing Michael had and all was well once again. John drove it around paddock for final determination of suspension clearance, looked to see if steering wheel was

on center and determine if suspension might be suspect. We had found no suspension damage that was apparent to that point. Plus Thomas had reported that 3rd gear was starting to be a problem on upshifts (grinding). John came back and indicated trans was not good and suspension needed alignment assessment/adjustment. So at 7pm we began replacing trans with a spare we brought along. At 10 pm trans was replaced and working correctly. We had to wait till morning and get Topp to align and give us vital numbers for suspension geometry. That morning Todd at Topp was overwhelmed with things to do. John went over and eyeballed the suspension into what he thought would be close. Todd checked it with his equipment and it was dead on. How cool is that? During warm up runs the repaired radiator let go. While we pulled off nose another radiator was found and borrowed. Installed, bled and here we go. Whew! Ninety minute enduro. Each car had to come in for a mandatory 5 minute stop. I talked with drivers and each gave me the time they wanted to pull in. Michael was coming in at 30 minute mark. Thomas wanted to come in at 45 minute mark. John at 1 hour and Greg at 1 hour 5 minutes. Thomas suddenly showed up at 18 minute mark. I went over the wall in hot pits to see what was up (only driver with a radio was Michael so had no idea why he was in). He reported a huge vibration from the rear. I looked at right rear wheel quickly and found dirt fully packed around the wheel. continued on page 27 March 25

917 - 020 For Sale! Found on 962.com 1970 Porsche 917 Chassis No: 917 020. $2.25m Contact: Wayne Jackson Telephone: +001 (410) 493 2883 E-mail: Wayne@962.com Chassis 917.020 remains arguably the single most correct, meticulously restored and one of the single most historicly important surviving vehicle of its type in existence. Chassis 917.020 is fully documented from the very moment built by the Porsche Factory, through each of its individual races and on to its one and sole owner since new. It is in fact the only one-owner-from-new Porsche 917 in existence. It is also the only 917 known to still have its original Porsche Factory Invoice. While it is most always associated with its overall victory at the gruelling 12 Hours of Sebring, this is but one small part of this most fortunate vehicle. Chassis 917.020 is one of the few fabled Porsche 917 Coupes which swept the board in endurance racing in both 1970 and 1971. It also has the distinction of being the winner of the Sebring Twelve Hour Race in 1971, driven by Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse. This car is one of just five 917 Coupes to have won a major World Endurance Championship Race remaining outside of Factory ownership today. 917.020 started its racing life on April 2, 1970 when it was driven by Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann at Brands Hatch for the BOAC 1,000 Kms race, using a 4.5 liter Flat-1 2 engine. Attwood and Herrmann qualified 9th and finished 3rd in a race run in atrociously wet conditions. Monza was the next venue for 917.020 for the 1000 Km race held April 25th. Attwood and Herrmann were teamed up again but, despite running 6th, were forced to retire when the engine failed. The very fast Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium was the venue for the next race, another 1000 Km event where Attwood and Herrmann finished in sixth place. For 26

Submitted by Jerry DeFeo

the 1971 season, “020” received a new 4.9 liter engine plus wider wheels and a four-speed gearbox. 917.020 was used as a practice car for the opening race at Daytona but at Sebring, for the 12 Hours Race in March, “020” was to be driven by Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse. “020” was qualified 4th by Vic Elford and, in the first hour, was delayed by contact with a b a c k - m a r k e r, which cost the car a complete lap. Elford and Larrousse then began to press on and by the third hour, “020” was up to 4th place. The leading Sunoco-sponsored Ferrari 512 was now in collision with Pedro Rodriguez’s Gulf-entered 917K, leaving “020” in second place, behind an Alfa Romeo T33. Lapping ever faster, Larrousse caught up to and passed the Alfa Romeo to leave “just” 572 miles to go for the well-earned victory which awaited the English/French driver combination. At the end of the season, Vasek Polak bought all three of the Porsche Salzburg Team 917’s, chassis numbers “019”, “020”, and “023”. Mr. Polak sold “019” to an American collector and kept the LeMans winner, chassis “023” and the Sebring winner, chassis # “ 0 2 0 ” . 917.020 has b e e n meticulously rebuilt and restored by R o b e r t Hatchman Autocraft of Grants Pass, Oregon with all the mechanicals being restored by Gustav Nitsche, Vasek Polak’s ex-Porsche Factory Team engineer. There are no finer sports-prototype racing cars than the Porsche 917. This coupe, with its Sebring Twelve Hour Victory and immaculate preparation is, arguably, the finest 917 today.

Cliff Rambles on & on & on: continued Asked if he had gone off track. He answered “yes I spun off Wallace 10th, again good consistent driving in a huge field into the dirt.” This became his 5 minute stop. Cleared dirt for a driver that had never seen the track before. Michael Hsu from both rear wheels and checked car over. Got him back 11th. I owe Michael an apology for not keeping him out when out and all was well. green flag dropped. It cost him many places in the race as his Just before Michael was due in, a 944 Turbo had an engine sprint finishes were stellar. He was 3rd in Sprint race 1, 4th grenade on the front straight right in front of us. Gigantic in Sprint race 2. That’s among near 20+ cars in class. Michael cloud of smoke, looked like when engine was really quick and improving with every let go it locked up and simultaneously lap. Bernard Nussbaumer 12th in class in locked up rear wheels and poured oil enduro. Bernard was having fuel delivery beneath car. The locked up rear wheels problems and his car was down on power sent the car spinning by us going straight in the enduro. He was finishing in top 10 down the front straight. The car did not prior to fuel delivery problems. hit anything it just spun round and round Next year we must do even better. That is and came to a stop, driver’s left, 2/3rds of my mantra for next year. All cars finished the way down the straight. Holy cow! Full this year and that is very important. We course yellow condition. have to go back next year. So John, Denis, You cannot pit under yellow in this PCA Bernard, Thomas and Michael start getting race. So Michael stayed out. Clean up took ready! Plus Steve Watkins, Glen Smith, forever. Workers were picking up debris Bryan Henderson and Cheryl McCally from engine and cleaning oil from track need to join us… Ha! surface forever. His stop was starting to I wish I had more space to write here. crowd when John and Greg were supposed Billy Stevens spent all his spare time in our to come in. Finally the yellow flag lifted paddock despite the fact that he was driving and full on racing was on again. The green Billy Stevens with his winnings! a cup car. While we worked feverishly he flag came out just as Michael was entering brought us all food. He constantly worked area of “pit in.” He immediately ducked in. Bad move. After a with everyone and helped in a huge number of ways. Billy yellow you have to go by start finish, complete a lap then come was always there to help calm drivers and give advice. He in. I was caught off guard and did not realize we had screwed absolutely was on fire in his GTC4 Cup Car class winning up here. Guys in pit next to us ran over and made sure I knew both sprints. Turning pretty consistent 2:13’s-2:14’s… WOW! this was not going to count toward 5 min stop. Arrrgh. Sent When the enduro came along his car suddenly developed Michael back out. Before he could get another lap in another brake bias issues (the weather and track temps had changed yellow flag came out. Someone dumped coolant all over turn quite a lot). We watched him lock up the front wheels “big 10. More waiting to get all stops completed. The folks next to time” going into bus stop (massive smoke from tires). He had us knew we had 4 cars to deal with, only 2 pit boxes assigned front tires replaced twice before all could be sorted in pits. I to us, 3 cars still in need of a stop and came over to let me believe a cut tire started off his bad luck very early. It was not know the pit box behind them was available (not assigned hard to see that he was simply making the best of his situation to anyone). So when green flag came back out all three cars and still turning respectable times. Ended up 4th in class in came in. I ran and stopped John as far forward as possible, enduro. Way to go Billy. We rooted him on during enduro as checked his tire pressures, then moved to Michael’s car with the class our Spec Boxsters’ were in was over. We were able same check, while looking upstream for Greg. Sure enough to relax and watch his race. For someone that is just getting here comes Greg. I ran into neighbors pit area and let them going in Cup class I believe a gauntlet has been thrown down. know I had 3rd car about to pit behind them. Pointed Greg TWS Club Race is coming up and it looks like everyone is into position and checked him over. Good grief…… going including Billy in his SP Box car, Steve Watkins, Glen Next year we will have radios in all cars or I’m gonna kill Smith and all that were at Sebring this year plus many more somebody. Plus I will be more attentive to pit strategy. Make Mav folks in the same class. This is a drivers’ venue. Many better notes, and have more meetings with everyone over of the cars have been prepped in our shop and I know they entire effort. We will get better at this effort in all phases. are legal. That makes them equal in capability. A true driver’s End results? John Gladwill 1st place in our class. I never venue. The racing in this class is very pure for now as far as doubted that outcome barring any mechanical malfunctions. car build goes. Everyone should come out for this one as it is Denis Boulle 6th in class as he drove with great consistency. close to home. Gonna be very entertaining and fun!…. Pray Thomas Jones 8th, watching him come all that way from for good weather…….. the rear after his car was reconstructed was awesome. Greg It’s All Good! Cliff March 27

Tech Corner Ed Mullenix, Tech Chair

O

ur thanks to Aaron Woods, the service manager, and Larry Irby, the parts manager at Boardwalk Porsche, for their help in our most successful tech session to date! Not counting Bob Benson, the Safety Chair, Mike Brodigan, the DE Chair, and myself, 46 eager Porsche owners showed up to listen to Bob explain the what’s and why’s of the tech sign-off sheet. My Teutonic heritage compelled me to jump in and pontificate about things technical. I think we were successful at showing and explaining what to look for on a tech inspection and how it relates to track safety. There were a lot of questions and folks appeared to enjoy the presentation. We might entertain having another one of these sessions next year prior to the start of the driving season. As always, we ask for our members’ feedback on how the sessions were received and what we could do to improve them.

Spells, Incantations, and Service Procedures Other than I am happy to see the end of the ice and snow for this year, not much news to report from Lake Wobegon, or central Richardson for that matter. Last May, we had a tech session at my shop where we applied preservative to convertible tops. That session had a great turn-out and we might have another one, although I want share the love and host it at another location. I invite our members to suggest topics that we might present in future tech session. We try not to keep rehashing the same old thing. Some topics merit encore presentations, but we are always looking to expand our horizons.
