hat a great year to be a Maverick! “Maverick” means being unconventional, as we are in many ways. Example: our 50th year celebrations (not just one, but many), which are a far different concept from what many other regions have done to celebrate theirs! WATCH the pages of Slipstream (or go online to mav. pca.org) to see what’s coming up. How about the raffle for a trip to Germany!?! Fifty dollars buys you one chance out of 300 to win this week-long trip to Germany FOR TWO, including Airfare, 7-night hotel stay (Marriott Stuttgart), $500 rental car allowance, and tours of the Porsche Factory and Museum. And the proceeds benefit your club and our charity: the HuffakerHughes Hope House. How can you lose on this? You may purchase tickets by sending a check, payable to MRPCA, to Christy Payne 513 Elaine St., Keller, TX 76248.

Please include: Your Name, Phone number, Email address and Mailing address. Good luck to you!

Mav of the Month How do we pay to keep Slipstream running? Certainly, your membership dues contribute a part, but the majority of the cost to maintain our magazine is borne by our Advertisers [PLEASE support them]! And just WHO manages our advertisers? Well, it’s this month’s Mav of the Month, Pat Friend. In his “spare time,” he stays in touch with them, manages ad size and location, handles billing and collections, and keeps our advertising pages full by bring-

ing on new advertisers as space allows. Not the easiest or most fun job, but certainly one at which Pat has done an outstanding job. So the next time you see Pat, give him a hearty pat-on-the-back and a big “thank-you” for keeping our Slipstream magazine afloat. In the meantime, Pat will enjoy his dinner on us at the Silver Fox restaurant. Thank YOU, Pat, for keeping us going and growing!

nce again our Mavericks have joined in with the local Veterans' organization, but this time it was to assist with a send-off for our troops being deployed to Kuwait and Afghanistan. Twelve of our members picked up Veterans at their homes and delivered them to D/FW Airport, where Veterans and Mavericks served lunch to the troops being deployed and shared stories of times past and present. What a great way to let our deploying troops “I will never know that they are appreciated forget today!” - Mr. and cared for, AND a great way Blatnik, above for our Veterans to participate. 2

S

o March is finally here, and our various series are all gearing up for another year.

The weekend of March 10-11 kicks off the Drivers’ Ed season at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Slidell, north of Decatur. If you have ever thought about trying your Porsche out on a real live racetrack, take the short drive up there to see what it’s all about (hint: it’s all about safety and fun)! The next weekend begins the Time Trial and Autocross event season at the expansive facility at Mineral Wells Airport. Want to explore the handling limits of your Porsche? The MineralRing is the

place to do it - if you get out of control, there is nothing to hit but poor defenseless traffic cones! Or if a scenic drive out to the countryside with a bunch of likeminded Porsche enthusiasts is more your cup of tea, the first Sunday Drive of the year happens on March 18. This one is for you folks in the western part of the Metroplex - it starts in Lake Worth and ends up with a tour of the Vintage Flying Museum at Meacham Field. And from there it is off to another Fort Worth landmark, Joe T. Garcia’s. And don’t forget that registration for the 57th Porsche Parade, that week-long celebration of everything Porsche, opens on March 13. If you haven’t been to one, consider going to this year’s event in Salt Lake City, running from July 8 to 14. Maverick

Region will be well represented there, and I’ll hazard a guess that there will be at least one Maverick 50th Anniversary party that week! But before any of that takes place, you still have time to read about a couple of big events that happened in Florida earlier this year, covered in this issue. I won’t spoil it for you except to say that Maverick Region was well-represented at both venues. And I would sincerely like to thank our contributing authors and photographers for giving me so much to work with this month. If you like to write or take photos, we would love to hear from you Read on!

January Happy Hour at theWildwood Grill By Katie Schwausch

I

recall looking out across the patio at the row of Porsches gleaming under the lights: 911s, Boxsters, a GT3 RS, and what's that? A Chrysler Crossfire smack in the middle of the line! One could say that it was inexcusable, driving a Chrysler to a PCA event, let alone parking it there as if it belonged among such beautiful performance cars. But in doing so, I would be obligated to say the same for the snafus that occurred at the PCA Happy Hour held January 17th at the Wildwood Grill in Southlake, and I can't.

John Hamilton dined at Wildwood and casually mentioned to Dave, Wildwood's owner, that PCA would be there for the Happy Hour, but PCA was not on the schedule - at all. (We discovered later that the reservation had been made under a different name, same night. Oops.) Dave, being a Porsche owner and enthusiast himself, arranged for the location outside, reserved the parking across the front of the restaurant (remember the Crossfire?) and even put a "Welcome Porsche Club" message on the chalkboard sign at the front door.

We had a fantastic turnout on what was an unseasonably warm evening, quite fortunate considering our party had been moved from a cozy inside dining room to the bar area and outdoor patio, all due to a clerical error; but wait, the story goes on. Two weeks prior,

Porsche owners certainly are a passionate lot. Choosing from Wildwood's delicious and extensive menu was the most difficult task of the evening for most. Some of that Porsche passion shined again when members from Dallas and Plano labored through glacial traffic caused

by an 18-wheeler accident on 114, making it just in time for dinner. Note the absence of pictures from January's happy hour. That was the final snafu of the evening. I forgot the camera. It's painfully obvious, so I'll just admit it: This was my first attempt at hosting a happy hour. The mishaps aside, the evening was delightful, a mix of new and existing members, drivers and instructors, and very supportive spouses all brought together with a single passion uniting them. Oh, and it turns out the Crossfire was owned by our January Mav of the month, and a very active PCA member. Oops. If asked to host again, I will gladly accept the opportunity. I'll have a great time, meet some new friends and see old ones, and who knows, maybe come away with another story to tell. March 5

h yes, what a difference a year makes. Last year we were in the midst of an unexpected winter snowstorm just before the start of Super Bowl 45. This year the weather is perfect. Ah yes, what a difference a year makes. Our meeting started at 7pm with a welcome from John Hamilton. He shared a request from the VFW association to provide transportation to veterans participating in parade on February 11, 2012. Several individuals who also happen to be Maverick Region members have graciously provided support to this association in the past. John also described a request from charitable organization called My Possibilities. This group will coordinate having a car show with us at a location to be determined (perhaps Boardwalk Porsche). The purpose is to raise awareness of what their organiza organization does and to gain volunteers and program participants. For more information please visit www. mypossibilities.org/about-mp. I had the opportunity to attend our recent all-member party in Keller, TX. The attendance exceeded our expectations with 130 total attendees. Forty of these were new members. The board discussed ways to further engage with new members. Our current process, led by Lisa Steele and the member membership committee, is to personally contact new and renewal members to welcome them to the region. If you are a new or existing member, please tell us what we can do better

8

to meet your needs. Feel free to use our online suggestion box to do so at http://mav.pca.org/ Contacts/suggestions_submit.asp. Rob Adams attended this meeting as a guest. He brought up a good point about Autocross (AX) and Time-Trial (TT) events. He noted that these events may come across as intimidating to participate in, yet once someone participates they are hooked. He suggested creating a “VIP” tent or having an ambassador at our events to explain these to those interested in learning about them. Thanks again Rob for your member-centric feedback. Robyn Howard shared that a second swap meet will be scheduled later this year. She noted plans are underway to find alternate venues for AX and TT events. She also not noted that an AX school is scheduled for April 15th and that a one-day TT event is planned for October 2012 at MotorSport Ranch (MSR). As always check the Maverick Region website for all of the driving events scheduled within our region. Jim Falgout reminded the board that budgets are due prior to the March 7 board meeting. He and John Hamilton reminded the board chairs to be fiscally prudent about expenses this year. Richard Bradley noted that the editorial transfer of Slipstream to Carey Spreen is going well. Thanks again to both of you for making the transition flow so smoothly. Pat Friend described that he has been in contact with advertisers to ensure that they continue to see value in advertising in Slipstream and that we appreciate

February 1, 2012 their financial support. Al Silva described initiatives to communicate the value of AX and TT events to the region. One such tactic involves developing a video about Drivers’ Education (DE), AX and TT events. He is seeking production staff to help him with this effort. I bet there is no shortage of drivers who want to showcase their talents! Cue up the Paul Simon song, “You Can Call Me Al!” Brendan reiterated the need reto continue to market our re gion to new Porsche car owners with a packet of information Pancontaining Slipstream, Pan orama, and PCA National and Maverick Region brochures. Mike Farrar mentioned that next Happy Hour will be at Ruggeri’s Italian Kitchen. That will be a fun update to read about in Slipstream! Mike Brodigan described a combined Drivers’ Education and Time Trial event on June 2. He also described a half-day Introduction to DE which would allow for classroom sessions, feedback from instructors, as well as charity laps. Registration for the first event on March 10 at Eagles Canyon is underway. He described an incentive entitled “go for four, get one more!” This drivis for yellow and white level driv ers, including anyone promoted to either of those levels this year. Pat Heptig mentioned that the April 21 DE is the 3.1-mile circuit at MSR. He also described a concept idea to partner with the BMW club for two events in a year. This will allow us to benchmark other clubs and “drive” DE attendance.

The goal is to offer high quality events that generate revenue for the region. Your Porsche will thank you for the workout. Pat also described our Club Race scheduled for October 27 of this year. Make plans to join us at this event. If you have any questions please email de@mavpca.org. Wendy Shoffit alerted us that registration for the PCA Parade event this year in Salt Lake City opens on March 13. General information about the event is available at http://parade2012.pca.org. Be sure to register early as events will fill up quickly. Wendy also updated the board about changes to the Maverick Region website which

include active menus and iPhone compatibility. For those of you reading Slipstream electronically she is working to create active links to content and advertisers to create a great interactive experience for all. Christy Payne noted the success of the All Member Party and the upcoming “Love Your Porsche” event at RAC performance with more than 30 advance registrations. She reminded us that we have several events coming up later this year, including Founders’ Day on December 1, 2012. Here’s the perfect reason to avoid that Holiday Party that you have to go to on that night - just join us at Founders Day! It is on the calendar at our home!

Lisa Steele noted that we have added 26 new members to our region and our total membership is 2,074. The membership committee is always appreciative about your feedback and any new member recommendations. Feel free to contact Lisa at membership@ mavpca.org regarding these. Russell Walker joined us as a guest for this meeting. He feels that the Maverick Region is a welcoming group and is happy to help out the region in any way. John Hamilton concluded by thanking everyone for their help and participation in region events. Meeting adjourned at 8:20pm.

S

ocial events of all kinds have been a vital part of our region’s history. Beside having dinners, lunches, and Happy Hours, we’ve had many three-day weekend RoundUp events, and then many of us hard-core crazies spend a full blown week-plusdriving-time to a resort across the country to attend the annual Porsche Parade - the ultimate in social activities involving cars, cars, cars and people, people, people. Our region has hosted two Porsche Parades: DFW 1987 and Ft Worth 2004. Plus we were basically co-hosts at the San Antonio Parade in 1997 since so many of our members were chairs and workers for them. Alan and I have been to more than twenty Parades and after the first three, I felt like we were attending a Family Reunion of some kind! It is still amazing fun.

PCA level over and over again.

Turn 17 goes under a bridge and there is no way a driver can see a super slow car upon entry at speed. He was flying and gonna win the class by somewhere around half a lap, as he had done all weekend. Such a shame.

lending a hand during Jim’s stop if we could. I think it was lap 12 that he goes by us on the front straight with smoke coming from the rear of the car. It looks intermittent and we start to worry. Next lap looks worse. Lap 14 he retires with a right cam feed line pouring oil on the exhaust. AAAAArrrrrrrggghhh. Bryan Bell has a good run with his brother-in-law Charles Bray. They finish 1-2 in SP996 class. Unfortunately they are the only two in that class. I hope it grows. They stay out of trouble and get the job done. Way to go guys. Charles is also a Mav so HEY, Mavs dominated SP996 class. Ha!

Thomas Jones’ Spec Boxster after Turn 17 in the Enduro Billy also has some bad luck. He is dueling hard somewhere near 30 minute mark. I do not know what position he is fighting for in class - I think it is either first or second place. Nose to tail with another Cup car, they enter a corner with Billy having his left front corner slightly left of his competitor’s right rear wheel. Right rear of the opposing car goes flat and they collide. Unbelievable. Jim Buckley has been looking pretty strong all weekend. We thought he could finish top three and even possibly win in E class. His wife Leslie was gonna help with his refueling and they had a pit stall assigned two away from ours. I visited with her multiple times before and even during the Enduro. We were planning on running over and

over yer bumper till the green flag dropped!” That exclamation has us all rolling around laughing for quite some time. When the Enduro finally gets going? He simply goes out and gets it right. Second in class at the checker and is only a couple feet from first place. Nice work James! Gary and I are up at 6:30 am each day, watching the sun come up with a cup of coffee while overlooking the track from our balcony. It is always being cleaned by workers driving sweepers, etc., as we sit and watch in the pre-dawn light. Palm trees in the background sometimes with fog surrounding the trunks as the sun comes up. Then go from 7 am to dark thirty with meetings, practice sessions, warm ups, qualifying, sprints, and the Enduro. Standing in hot pits, checking tire pressures, replacing brake pads, worries over possible brake fluid seepages getting worse, tire maintenance, fuel usage calculations, and pit stop strategies.

Then there is James. Our very own Mr. Shoffit shows up and simply works at Oh My! getting quicker. Never at a loss for humor is James. He comes in at one point and is steaming with anxious emotion. “I got schooled out there, I got killed every lap!” The D class starts with nine cars in qualifying. By the time the Enduro starts there are five cars left including James. On Saturday he comes in and looks at Thomas and Billy Stevens in his GT3 Cup car says “I was all

The 50th Rolex 24 At Daytona By Alan Bambina

H

ey Alan, you need to join me at the 24 hours race in Daytona!” That’s what started this entire adventure. Joel Nannis blurted out this invite at the Maverick Region’s Holiday Party in December. It took a few days and some looking into the cost of flights for me to finally call him back and say “I’m in”. Next I get an email from Joel with yet another surprise invite. Joel’s time-share near Daytona will also be housing Maverick members Lori

Mauthe and her husband Peter. Now Lori and Peter have some connections as they are customers of Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville, Florida, and Brumos is fielding a car for the race. Brumos is also sponsoring a suite in the timing tower which is perhaps the finest location for viewing the entire race course, as well as supplying cold water, soft drinks and most importantly, clean bathrooms! So here I am, expecting to stand out in the warm Florida weather for 24 hours straight watching the titans of endurance auto racing do battle, and now I have a warm bed to sleep in and a comfortable, quiet suite from which to watch the race. Life

Photos by Joel Nannis doesn’t get much better than this! This was my first visit to this amazing facility in Daytona, and it soon became a feast for the senses. From the parking lot, you can hear the cars. From the tunnel, you can smell the rubber and hot brakes. And from the stands, you can FEEL the vibration deep in your chest as engines of all configurations pass by. The Daytona Prototype cars were mostly V8s, as were the Camaros and Corvettes in the GT class. You’ll soon realize that if you listen carefully, you’ll hear a twin scream from these enormous displacement engines. There’s the high pitched whine of the

revs, as well as the low rumble of the exhaust note. I’m sure all the engines have multiple frequency reports, but it is most obvious with the ground-pounding V8s. The four of us walked the infield, visiting various vendor tents, stopping by the PCA Parking Corral and tent, talking briefly with PCA National President Manny Alban and PCA Executive Director Vu Nguyen. Patron Tequila had a tent offering $3 shots right next to a cigar vendor. What a brilliant idea placing those two adjacent to each other. Eventually, we made it back to the Brumos suite and sat down for a while. Lori, Peter and Joel are all in much better shape than I, so I was happy to park my butt for a short while. Now it’s off to find the time-share condo and get ready to meet friends for dinner. Gene’s Steakhouse was the location, and our party of 11 was a contest in remembering everyone’s names and what their connection was to others

Sir Jackie Stewart was on hand for the 50th Anniversary celebration

A Porsche 917K, one of the historic race cars on display in the party. Perfectly prepared steaks, warm, flavorful wines and sparkling conversation dominated the evening while scanning the restaurant for drivers and celebrities who also know that Gene’s is a tradition for a good meal. Saturday morning found us walking the infield yet again before retreating to the suite high above the thundering crowds for all the pre-race festivities. Each of the 48 teams were introduced before they walked to their cars on the starting grid. There were fourteen Daytona Prototype (DP) cars with their distinctive Riley or Corvette DP shaped bodies followed by 34 GT class cars. It was these GT cars that really piqued my interest. Sure, they are all purpose built race cars and have the most up-to-the-minute modifications and safety features, but they look like the cars you and I drive every day, well almost. Twenty of the 34 GT cars were Porsche GT3s, so there was no shortage of eye candy from Stuttgart. It was during this driver introduction period that Lori and Joel made it down to the grid and visited with Brumos’s most famous driver, Hurley Haywood. Hurley

and Brumos have a long history together, and Lori has known him for years, so it was no surprise that they greeted each other with a big hug. Wow, what a thrill. An endurance race is just that, a test that proves who can hold their act together for 24 hours without catastrophic failure. This goes for the fans as well as the racers. For the fan, it’s more a contest of time management of when to take a short nap in the empty stands, or walk the track to view the action up close in a variety of corners. The back straight has a chicane called the Bus Stop where cars decelerate and turn in sharply before accelerating again onto the high banked Turn Three. This is a favorite viewing spot at night as the carbon fiber brake discs glow soft red in the darkness, converting all that kinetic speed energy into heat. The best photo locals are elbow to elbow as the pro photographers jockey for a good angle. This isn’t NASCAR with lots of rubbing, bumping and crashes. Sure, there is occasional contact between cars, but it rarely results in a caution flag and a long period of down time interrupting the flow. March 17

Actually, restarts after a caution flag are fun to watch as the two classes are split and all the DP cars bunch up and take off about 200 yards ahead of the GT class. That will make the change in your pocket jingle (literally) when all those ground pounders accelerate together. As day turns into night, the Ferris wheel lights up, the fireworks over Lake Lloyd brighten the sky, and the action in the pits become more visible. A driver’s stint is one tankful of fuel, which takes 40 to 45 minutes. Drivers are expected to endure at least two stints, and most teams have at least one driver who prefers to drive at night. That driver will do two, three or even four stints. This gives the other drivers a nice sleep period. That’s good for the drivers, but no such break for the pit crew. They can expect a car sliding into the pit every 45 minutes. Talk about grueling. Unlike most of the die-

The DP cars on grid hard fans that populate the camp grounds and infield, we decided to head back to the comfort of the condo around midnight. There are many large tents covering parts of the parking lot both inside and outside the track. Perhaps the most interesting to us was the collection of vintage race cars that have won the 24 hour race since its beginning in 1962. Twentynine of the 50 cars have been found and brought together for viewing, and the history was amazing. Here in one tent was the Lotus Climax 19B driven by Dan Gurney in 1962, among the Ford GT40, the Ferrari 330P4, the Porsche 907 (my favorite), a Viper with the sandblasted paint and dirt and oil still on the car, multiple 962s, the Kremer Porsche K8, and many others. You couldn’t touch the cars, but you could get very close to see how cramped the cockpit is. This trip down memory lane was a highlight of the weekend.

Lori Mauthe and Manfred Jantke. Jantke was PR and Racing Director at Porsche AG in the heyday of the 935 and 956/962, and is now Team Manager of On-Track Events for Audi 18

Sunday morning found us walking the infield again. Surprisingly, only two

cars had dropped out overnight, so activities on the track were still fast and furious. With about two hours to go, “our” Brumos team showed a bit of poor planning with their pit road strategy and got out of sequence with the others. The 59 Brumos car led the GT class virtually since the start of the race, but fell to third place in class at the checkered flag. A.J. Allmendinger drove the number 60 DP car to victory for the Michael Shank Racing team, as the post race festivities in the Winner’s Circle culminated in the presentation of Rolex watches to the four drivers. Another hour or two and it was back to the condo, dinner, then some much needed rest. My ears are still ringing, the smell of exhaust is still in my nose, and the quarters in my pocket are melted together.

Apparently not everyone was there to see the race

GEORGE EDWARDS, PARK PLACE PORSCHE ENTHUSIAST:

I bought my 1990 Porsche C2 because it was previously owned by a Park Place client who had his service done at Park Place Porsche. Since then, the cosmetic and performance upgrades have been performed there as well – from Big Red Brake Calipers/ Rotors, RSChip and Suspension to racing pedals and the RS America Wing.

PUSHING THE PERFORMANCE ENVELOPE.

It’s both street-worthy and track-worthy and, even though it has more than 180,000 miles on it, runs great. Unlike other brands, a Porsche is built strong, so as a high-mileage car, it’s still strong and robust enough to track at high speed. And I love that you can drive it in a high-performance fashion and still drive it on the street the next day. It doesn’t have to be a garage queen; you can drive, and drive hard, and the next day it actually starts. As someone who does his research to properly maintain his vehicle for the track, while keeping it street legal, I most value the quality service and detailed advice I get at Park Place Porsche. I feel good knowing that I’m using genuine Porsche parts, and that both Park Place and Porsche stand behind them with warranties on the parts and labor. It’s so important – I can’t emphasize this enough – to have the confidence and peace of mind that the work has been done correctly, and that Park Place stands behind it.

Maverick Region All Member Party By Valerie Fitzau

ven without our GPS, Bernd and I knew we had arrived at our final destination. Porsches of various makes and models were the first to greet us in the Heritage Clubhouse parking lot for the Maverick’s Region “Meet & Greet” event on this sunny but cool Saturday afternoon in Keller, Texas. The road trip from McKinney, in our convertible, was already half the fun and now the other half was waiting for us inside.

At the entrance to the Clubhouse, we walked past the Maverick Region sign and I felt a sense of anticipation and excitement. My husband Bernd had attended two previous Maverick’s Happy Hours since we joined the club in August 2011, but this was my first club event. My name is Valerie Fitzau and I am a new member of the Maverick Region PCA. Upon entering the clubhouse, Christy quickly found our names,

20

welcomed us as new members and handed us our color-coded badges appropriately colored green. I scanned the clubhouse for others like us and immediately noticed we weren’t the only “newbies” here. What a relief. Members of all ages and club status were deep in conversation with each other smiling and enjoying refreshments. Bernd and I had just walked into the main meeting area, when Jim Falgout stopped to meet us. Jim was wearing a red 50th Anniversary Maverick Region PCA badge and official Maverick Region PCA pin. In talking with Jim, we were amazed when he said that he was a CPA with an office in “old square” McKinney and drinks coffee at the same café in the square like us. Not only is he as warm and friendly but he is also the club’s Treasurer. He let us know that the club was formed in 1962 and that 2012 was going to be an exciting year in celebrating 50 years of Driving Friendships Maverick Region style. Speaking of style, midway through the event, Linda Bambina, in her beautiful beaded Porsche vest, announced 50th Anniversary club events planned during 2012 that included Happy Hours, Lunches, Autocross/Time Trials and Driver Education and the end of year Founders’ Day Gala. In addition, she has said that on February 18 at 10:00 AM, there is a Love Your Tech Session where, cross my heart, you can register to win a free clear bra with installation. The guys had a lot of fun with the session “prize” and most of them agreed that the clear

Photos by Charlie Davis

bra would be even better than a wonder bra. We women countered asking why we need to attend this technical session, since we have been wearing them for years.

In the spirit of charity, the Maverick Region is sponsoring a 50th Anniversary Germany Vacation Raffle with a portion of the net proceeds benefiting the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Christy let us know the drawing will be held on December 1, 2012 at the 50th Anniversary Founders’ Day Gala in the Texas Motor Speedway Grand Ballroom. The trip to Germany is designed to give you one full week of the

Porsche experience that includes two round trip tickets to Stuttgart, Porsche Factory Tour and Porsche Museum along with hotel accommodations and car allowance. If you haven’t already, please support a good cause and purchase a raffle ticket for - you guessed it - $50. John, our Maverick Region Club President, then took over and talked about the 50 years of the club. Laughter filled the room, when Charlie Davis was recognized as the “oldest” club member in the room at 43 years of Maverick membership. In Porsche model years, Charlie is a “classic.”

the Porsche 911 started to be built, and the last year of the Porsche 356 which, in model years, makes me more of a “classic.” I love this club! While Bernd was outside with other Porsche aficionados checking out the cars in the parking lot, I was inside talking to

photography studio, and Gordie Cohen. Unfortunately, I don’t remember all the names of the members we met that day but I had a great time and hope to see them again soon. As we were getting ready to leave, we did meet up with some Maverick members whom Bernd had met at the previous Happy Hours, and who also have direct ties to Germany. We said our final good-byes including the German “tschuess” meaning “bye,” we bought a Maverick Region member directory, and headed out the door.

This year is special for me too because I also recently turned 50. Most women would never admit their age but based on my

first event experience, this club uniquely embraces people of all ages, diverse professions and drivers of Porsche models including the “classics.” In Porsche model years, I would be a 1961 Porsche 356 convertible although my husband would say I was more like a coupe due to hard-headedness. Not only do I admire the German engineering of the Porsche, but my better half Bernd was also made in Germany in 1965. Yes, he was born four years after me, two years after

Wendy, Charlie, and Denny about driving our Porsche. I learned that I should start driving with a car that has less power like a Porsche 914, not trying to offend any 914 owners, or dare I say a Miata. Until today, I did not realize that the sequence between completing the Autocross/Time Trials first or formal Drivers Education first could cause such a “friendly” debate. But no one debated that I should not drive our 911 without training and I could just picture my husband smiling.

As the Heritage Clubhouse door closed behind us and we passed by the Maverick Region sign again, we stopped to reflect on our first Maverick event together. We agreed that our Porsche was what drove us here today and unites us as Maverick Region members but it is friendship that will keep us coming back, hopefully for another 50 years.

We continued to mingle throughout the afternoon with Maverick members like Ken Cox, who has a March 21

hat had I done? I thought as I drove home the 1971 914 1.7L Porsche I had just bought. The large front window, the funny exhaust sound, the unfamiliar gearshift pattern - 5 speeds!! Quite a bit different than the 1972 Chevelle Malibu SS I had just sold. It took me about a day to fall in love with the little 914; in fact, after buying that first one in 1972, I quickly went through 3 more in the next few years. A new yellow 1973 914 2.0, a new 1974 just like the ‘73, and then another ‘73 into which I installed a cam and made fit a pair of 40P11 Solex 356 carbs. I picked up a 1972 911S with airport gears in 1974 - 117 top end - but brother, would it get

22

there quick! In 1975 an Anaconda Green 1971 911S was my pride and joy. Hhhummm. A blue 1971 911S with a bad motor - my first foray into building a 911 engine. Ok, with one 911 engine rebuild under my belt, if I take out the 66mm stroke crank on my 1971 and put in a used 70.4mm crank and rods I found, and slightly lower the compression…Momma Mia! A real high revving rocket!! This all led to me building my first Porsche 911 race car in 1976. Barry Gibbs had just started 911 Enterprises and he gave me a parts deal on my building an SCCA 2.0L DProduction 911. After a few seasons of racing, that gave way to an ultraquick 911 DP Targa that found me a 3rd place finish at the SCCA Na-

tional Championships. Soon, 924, 924 Carrera GTR, and 944 race cars followed. I was selected by Al Holbert to race one of the original seven 944 Firestone Firehawk cars in the inaugural 1985 series. Fast forward to 2012 as we prepare for the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge series with a 420 hp 2012 Audi TT RS. I’ve raced in SCCA Club, SCCA Pro World Challenge, IMSA, Grand-Am Rolex and Cup, Motorola Cup, NASA, and PCA. Been there, done that, at every major track in the U.S. and Canada. Forty years of driving and 34 years of owning a Porsche repair shop and almost that long as a Slipstream advertiser…Thanks to all!!

firm. As soon as they got in the Dallas area, Jason began searching for an earlier 911 because this has been a car of his dreams. Jason and Carrie attended Cars & Coffee in Plano last summer, and that’s where Jason met Jack Griffin, who had just pulled up in his 1976 911S (white with red interior) which of course was very highly tuned and had a brand new engine/transmission.

am so thrilled to introduce Jason and Carrie Morski as this month’s new member spotlight couple. Jason’s Porsche experience started while living in Manhattan, where he began his career on Wall Street, and when he bought a triple black loaded 2001 Boxster S. He used to take early (like 5am) blasts up the west side highway on Sunday mornings to White Plains and back. Even though he loved that car, he had to let it go after a few years as his garage rental in mid-town was about $500/month (in 2004). OUCH!

“After speaking with Jack for about 15 minutes I asked him if he would sell it, and he said he actually drove it to Cars & Coffee to do so. I followed Jack back to his house and after an inspection I was driving it home an hour later. I had just been bitten by the Porsche bug again.”

Jason and Carrie moved to Dallas in 2006 with a promotion and Jason now works as an executive for a large New York based financial

This summer Jason and Carrie completely renovated their garage with a Porsche theme including

a custom painted fridge and a ceiling fan in Gulf livery. Jason just recently took delivery of a 997 Carrera S with paint-to-sample Riviera Blue, carbon/ceramic brakes, loaded, with 11k miles.
