March 2013 - Published by the Maverick Region June 2007 -Porsche Published byof the Maverick Region Club America Porsche Club of America

To us, a checkered flag doesn’t mean stop. After each race, the question is always: where do we go next to compete? Sebring? Watkins Glen? Mid-Ohio? Texas World Speedway? Eagles? When the race is set, we are always ready to go. Lap records are usually set in class. Wins come with hard work and everyone contributing. Even when a win doesn’t come or if we go metal to metal during the race, when the track goes cold, we are still a family. That is what it is all about.

Proven performance in the workshop or at the track, at Boardwalk Porsche, it is our passion.

Drifting: Support Our Advertisers - Please! By John Hamilton, Region President

Y

our Slipstream newsletter is supported primarily through the businesses that advertise on these pages. They advertise expecting that they will receive good will and customers by doing so. One of the ways in which we can help them is by patronizing them whenever we can. When you do patronize any one of our advertisers, please do us all a favor: let them know that you’re a Porsche Club member and that their advertising pays off! Otherwise, they won’t know the true value of their ads.

Spring is coming! As you can see by our activities calendar, things are heating up just as the weather is warming up. So March includes a broad range of activities, including Autocross, Time Trial, Drivers’ Education and a Sunday Drive.

2

I frequently receive emails (president@ mavpca.org) asking what Autocross is and how to get started. The quick description of Autocross is on our website (mav. pca.org) under the tab “Events.” How to get started? Go to our Autocross School on March 24 at Dallas Raceway. It is absolutely the best way to learn the capabilities of your Porsche, and YES, TWO CAN SHARE A CAR!

Mav of the Month

ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051

This time our Mav of the Month is a relative “newbie!” When we started looking for a new Social Chair last fall, we had several qualified applicants, and Tracy Robertson got the job. Tracy rose to the occasion and literally took over everything Social. She and her team did a spectacular job of organizing and executing our “New/All Member Party” in January. So congratulations, Tracy!

Thanks for already jumping in with both feet to keep us running. And enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox Steakhouse! P.S.: The Silver Fox Steakhouse is one of our Advertisers.

John enjoys DEs, Happy Hours, the Porsche Parade, and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab which is how it got into his blood.

Gareth still remembers the cover of the car magazine that drew him into a lifetime of loving cars. He spent many afternoons riding his bike as a young kid to the local newsstand to buy and read everything he could. He now owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys driving it in wonderful Texas!

y the time you read this, Maverick Region will have had our first social event (the All Member Party) and first competitive event (Autocross at Dallas Raceway) of the year, as well as the inaugural Getaway Weekend. If you missed them, there’s more where that came from. In this issue you will find Part 2 of Joel Nannis’ and Lori Mauthe’s article about what to expect for your first Drivers’ Ed event. If you have decided that this is the year that you will take the plunge and see what it feels like to drive your Porsche on a real race track, that article is where you should start!

The first event in our ever-popular Sunday Drive series takes place on Sunday, March 3 -- see the ad below. Depending on the whims of fate and the USPS, you may or may not have received this issue by then; if not, I hope that you were able to visit our website, http://mav.pca. org, and find out about this Drive, whose destination is the Cavanaugh Flight Museum at Addison Airport, with a large collection of airworthy aircraft ranging from World War I vintage to the Vietnam era. The next weekend opens our Drivers’ Ed season at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Slidell; again, see “Your First DE Part 2” in this issue. And for another flavor of driver training, our annual Autocross Academy will take place on Sunday, March 24 at Dallas Raceway in Crandall.

Autocrossing is the time-honored tradition of navigating your way through a course delineated by pairs of traffic cones set up in a large parking lot. The goal is to get from one end of the course to the other in as little time as possible without hitting any cones. Those of us who have been autocrossing for a while know that there are two main benefits to the sport: (1) you learn how your Porsche behaves at, and sometimes beyond, the limits of traction, and you learn how to use that behavior to its utmost effect; and (2) you have a great time, spending very little money, with virtually no risk at all of damaging your “baby.” Check out the calendar on page 1; if something sounds interesting, I can assure you that it is!

Maverick Minutes: February Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary

A

t 7:08pm, Region President John Hamilton began the meeting by introducing our new Social Chair, Tracy Robertson and her husband Don. Tracy has big ideas for us, and asked that any ideas for social functions be sent to her at social@mavpca.org! Richard Cross delivered a card that folks at the New Member gathering signed for Myra Sutton, and said that the chemo is working! Radiation is next… Please continue to keep the Suttons in your prayers. Projected budgets are due next month. Treasurer Jim Falgout has forms, which are available electronically, for each committee chair. Please email Jim to request a form if you did not get a hard copy at the meeting. John will be sending in nominations for National awards via email, which are due before the end of February. Lisa Steele, our former Membership chair, was mentioned as a candidate for Enthusiast of the Year. Region of the year? We may have a shot because of our 50th anniversary this past year. And we will try again for the Overall Newsletter Award, which was an excellent victory for us last year! John noted that Tracy Robertson jumped right in and did a great job with the New / All Member gathering January 26. The event was an excellent opportunity to get to know folks, and learn more about all the various functions and facets available to club members. Suggestions were made requesting possible new locations for this annual Member party, as it appears

Heritage is kind of far away for some folks. Also, John introduced Susan and Tom Froehlich as our new Membership Co-Chairs. We are thrilled to have their support and experience, which will substantially contribute to our board and strengthening of our membership.

velous Mystery Tours” there. Linda is working on more Advertiser of the Month articles, and everyone is excited to be interviewed and featured. Thank you for all your hard work, Linda! It is showing up as lots of fun, and you are clearly very much enjoying what you are doing.

With that, John turned to Tracy for her report on her first social! She said we hosted about 120 attendees. She ensured that more information was shared by each committee in an organized fashion about what we do as a club to inspire involvement.

Wendy Shoffit reminded us that the PDFs of Slipstream are available to advertisers, as well as ad clickthroughs to capture data. Also, we will be putting a link for Lisa Steele’s interview video on-line, in addition to the time lapse of the 50th Anniversary celebration at Texas Motor Speedway. Reminder: Registration for the Porsche Parade (Traverse City, MI) opens Tuesday, March 12. Parade 2014 will be in Monterey, CA.

Mark your calendars for May 4, when we reconvene for our annual May at Mayo’s Concours and dinner. Sunday Drive assistant Brendan Eagan mentioned that the May Sunday Drive may be moved to follow this Saturday gathering. Tracy is in the processes of gathering transition details regarding her new role, like needing accesses, becoming familiar with the PCA calendar, other board volunteer roles, and related policies and procedures, etc. Brendan is also our new Calendar Boy (yes, that is what he prefers to be called!) PR chair Linda Bambina is continuing to work on, and is getting very excited about, the Fredericksburg Getaway. People from as far away as the Austin, San Antonio, and Tyler areas will be going. The Feb Slipstream was out really early this month. Kudos! She submitted an article to Porsche Panorama for the “From the Regions” section about our 50th Founders’ Day Gala. She is soliciting planning support for more Getaway Weekends, and member Marlee Shaw has experience from her days in San Diego; they were called “Mar-

She asked if we want to do the Regional Directory again; the majority said yes. They will be available to any club member for $5.00, as long it is not used commercially. It will not be made available electronically. We sold about 70 last year. We will print 200 this time. They are typically done in April. An opt-out notice is published in March. On the New Member page, we will advertise that they will be available. An email will be sent to members as well. Wendy mentioned the idea of having a Car Show, possibly this fall, so as not to conflict with the Autos in the Park show at Cooper Aerobics. This time we would invite vendors to put up displays on-site. We would need a chair. Linda said she has a friend in California who has done this. I mentioned sponsorship and philanthropy partnering. Bill Miller and James Shoffit then gave us a Club Race report. They put together a five-member co-

chair team combining a DE and Club Race, tentatively scheduled for May 10-12, at the COTA track in Austin. Verbal agreement was reached and a signed contract is pending. This will be a sellout. Look for an email regarding when registration will be open. DE Chair Lori Mauthe reported with a reminder that business cards printed with the 2013 DE schedule are now available. Keith Olcha will be standing in for her at the March DE, as she will be out of town that weekend at the Amelia Island Concours in Florida. For the April DE, parade laps are planned for Big Brothers Big Sisters. From last meeting, a budget request is still pending for training equipment. Last year there were seven new and four existing Instructor re-certifications. We are building. The unpredictability factor is challenging; Green and Blue groups will be limited to 25

entrants each to help remedy this planning issue, so we can be assured of enough instructors. iPads are being requested; they can connect to the Internet at Eagles Canyon, but not at MotorSport Ranch. $2500 is being requested. This upgrade will allow capture of the ratings /progress which would be uploaded and stored digitally. Histories could be looked up by Instructors without referring to student notebooks. Various possible options were discussed. Some board members offered that theirs be used as a trial first. An Apple TV (box) sells for $100, and Lori offered to donate hers. The idea is to put camera in students’ cars, then reviewed in class later. Jim Buckley will discuss enhancements for the coaching program: data acquisition in the car, analysis, and feedback. Tom Froehlich affirmed what a helpful mechanism that would be. An extra fee for this service would

be charged. Lori proposed borrowing the two iPads, try with Apple TV, and go from there. Tom also asked if the screens were readable in sunlight, and the answer was yes. The DE committee meeting venue got moved. Terry Powell is the new manager at Park Place, and Lori

Destination Restoration: Breathing Life Back Into a 914 By Ash Seidl-Staley

T

he beautiful little Carrera 914-6 (pictured on this page) and my uncle have had a stop-andgo relationship. My grandfather originally bought the car in 1988, and then sold it to my uncle in 1989, only to sell it back to my Grandfather in 1990. Within that year, though, he drove it, tinkered with it, and fell in love with it. Still to this day he says the only reason he sold it back was because he wanted the money so that he could use it towards buying a more practical car that he needed while he served in the Army. In the next 7 years, while in the hands of my infamous Grandfather, the car evolved into something

The 914-6 waking from its 15-year slumber altogether unique. To this day I cannot even begin to tell anyone what he did to it. And since I can’t ask him, all we have to go on is our own research and bits of documented evidence scattered about. I have found that the car was last registered with the Palmetto Region in South Carolina, and before that it was a documented Germany Region track car which my Grandfather used mostly to race in AX/TTs. From what we can see in the car itself, my uncle and I have come 8

Photos by the Author to realize that my Grandfather was never satisfied with the drive train. He took the original 2.0-liter flat four as far as it would go but ultimately upgraded to a more powerful flat six. Whether you

We do know that the car is a 1973 914 that had been converted into a 914-6. It has a unique-looking 916-style body kit, the hubs were changed to the 5-lug variety, the rear brakes are stock but the fronts are from a 911, and, based on serial numbers, the engine is a 1983 3.0-liter 911 SC engine with 40 IDA Webers, hooked to a 901 transmission.

Raised off the floor, inspection begins hate 914s or love them, you can at least agree that these cars can utilize the interchangeable Porsche parts catalog just as well, if not better, than their 911 brothers. After a long hiatus, my uncle acquired the car again in 1997, and since then it has been cooped up in the garage, hiding underneath various boxes and moving blankets. When I moved down to the Dallas area from up north I insisted that something be done with this car. Little did I know that what we were about to get into would change my perception of car mechanics and strengthen my admiration of Porsches forever. We started the first phase of restoration as anyone else would: lifting the car up, banging for rust, and diagnosing problems while generating a new parts list. Doing even this was no simple task because we had no idea the full extent of customization my Grandfather put into the car.

As we looked around we found that the body was practically rust free, minus a couple of bubble spots near the targa bar. We took to the easy tasks first: replacing all the fuel lines, pumps, and cleaning out the sludge-filled gas tank. We attempted to take down the engine to just the long block, but hit a snag when opening the plate covers to find a broken piece of the passenger side rocker assembly. Not knowing what else was damaged inside the case, or even whether it was worth fixing, weighed on my uncle’s mind, and stopped the project for close to a year. To be continued in next month’s issue . . . Would you like to have your restoration project featured in an upcoming issue of Slipstream? If so, contact me at ashseidlstaley@gmail.com so that we can put together an article about it.

All Member Party: Maverick Region’s Kick-Off-the-Year Event By Gareth Maurice, Region Vice President

ell, if you didn’t do anything the afternoon of Saturday, January 26, you will be kicking yourself after reading this article. The Maverick Region held our 2013 New Member Party at the Heritage Clubhouse in Keller, and we had an absolute blast! Where else can 120 people get together to stare at each other’s cars and have no one be offended if a few people drop their tops! (Car tops of course . . . ) The meeting kicked off at 2pm and thanks to our new Social Chair, Tracy Robertson, as soon as the

rumbling began she unveiled lunch. Now the rumbling was actually coming from the 24 Hours of Daytona on the TV in the other room, which tied in perfectly. Everyone spent the next few hours mingling, getting to know each other, and asking each other where they got various items on each other’s plates. Tracy’s deli

platters to the left and Sherry Zafar’s homemade desserts to the right . . . just awesome! At about the halfway point, Region President John Hamilton invited several of the Event Chairs up to share what our region offers its members. There are so many events of all different types that this region really has something for everyone to enjoy.

It is hard to believe you can wake up in Europe, fly home, and still have time to watch the Cowboys game on TV the same evening. Amazing stuff indeed. The reason for our European travel was to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Admittedly we are doing this a year late, but this was a special trip. Our Porsche buildings in Zuffenhausen travels included a wonderful six-day barge trip through the heart of Burgundy in France, on the French Country Waterways boat Nenuphar. Prior to the barge trip, we traveled to Stuttgart to visit Roshni’s cousins and TOUR THE PORSCHE MUSEUM. (We also saw the Mercedes-Benz Museum, which is definitely worth a visit, as well!) Can you believe this? What an awesome anniversary present! I really want to thank and recognize Roshni for tolerating all things “car” for a few days. Our Stuttgart journey began with a quick ride on the Metro to the Porsche Museum. From there it’s a four 16

The 1989 Panamericana concept car We arrived at noon and toured the museum. While there, we saw several of the cars one would expect to see there, as well as several experimental models. See above for one unique off-road model, the Panamericana. Of interest was the newly-opened museum exhibit about the recently deceased Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, also known as Butzi, eldest son of Ferry Porsche, and the designer of the 911. As you might expect, the automobile displays were spectacular, as was the exhibit about Dr. Porsche. I highly recommend the audio guide too. As spectacular as that sounds, what I am going to describe to you next is a true blessing for an autophile

like me. As many of you know, I attended my first Porsche Parade this year in Salt Lake City. While there, I had the opportunity to hear Mr. Dieter Landenberger, head of the Porsche Archives section, present the history of Porsche engineering and Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. Dieter is a very approachable guy and a truly great ambassador for the company. I mentioned to Dieter that I would be visiting Stuttgart to see the museum. He invited me to contact him while visiting (a gesture that I think speaks volumes about him) and guess what - I did just that! I contacted him upon arrival and, and he left me a message to meet him at 2pm, as he wanted to introduce me to some fellow PCA members who were also visiting. At 1:59pm, who should I see but Dieter on the escalator with fellow Mavericks Clint and Judy Blackman! They had just arrived from Paris, and, having known Dieter with the last Dieter for some Cayman R produced time, were having a personal meeting with him. Dieter had no idea that we already knew each other! Imagine traveling several thousand miles to Stuttgart and seeing a fellow Maverick at the Museum.

Sanjay Tripathi, Dieter Landenberger, Schlok Tripathi, Madhu and Roshni Rao, and Clint and Judy Blackman In all, was truly a great happening, one that both Roshni and I really enjoyed. We are forever grateful to Dieter, and happy we had a chance to meet fellow Mavericks Clint and Judy while in Stuttgart. It is a small world after all.

Dieter graciously gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the Porsche archives. One photo depicts the “library area used by journalists and researchers - very cool stuff. There are hundreds of Porsche magazines, books, and manuals right there. You really could spend a day just looking around and learning about Porsche. As the head archivist, Dieter escorted us to the storerooms containing thousands of photos, videos, and interesting items from various Porsche clubs all around the world. All of these are arranged with the German sense of efficiency and expediency you would expect.

Advertiser of the Month: Louden Motorcar Services, Inc. By Linda Bambina

L

ong time Maverick Steve Louden has been a Slipstream advertiser since 1978. SCCA racing was the foundation of Steve’s mechanical passion. It started when he built from scratch an H Modified Devin-bodied Crosley-powered race car at age 18. As he was too young to get a competition license, he had a friend race it at SCCA races at Daytona and Sebring. He later drove at such tracks as Road Atlanta, Riverside, Sebring, Daytona, Mexico City, and numerous other tracks, while winning several divisional championships and setting several track records. When Steve left his 12 year FORD management and SCCA racing career behind (ask him about Gordon Smiley and that decision), he opened his shop with a contract to build an IMSA GTU 911. He later transitioned into

18

retail maintenance and repair. He opened his shop with 4 jack stands, a card table and a full set of tools. Steve then put the simplest ad in Slipstream to grab our attention, which he certainly did, because that tiny business took off. In fact he still has his first retail customer, and many more, who have been with him 30-plus years. Steve accredits his loyal following to his personal and business code of integrity, attention to detail, and a strong, strong sense of courtesy and professionalism. Steve doesn’t do restorations or even work on cars more than a decade old anymore his focus is now on award-winning service for the newer cars. He has ASE Certified Master Technicians at this “First ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Shop in Dallas.” In addition, Louden Motorcars has been rated

“Best BOSCH Authorized Service Center in the Western U.S.” A+; Top Shop; “Best-Dallas”; “Best-Texas.” The accolades are all there, but so is a very personable and professional Owner/President. While he is very generous with a great many personal charities, he has always been there for us Mavericks and our events and charity needs. But mostly Steve just loves cars. He stays INVOLVED with cars. However, be assured that his attention to detail, from his racing days, carries over to street cars. Speaking of streets, getting to his shop can be a bit challenging with all the local highway construction, but he has a great interactive map on his website, or check the map on his color ad on the inside back cover of Slipstream. We congratulate you, Steve. Thirty-five years and counting!

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Driver Assist Systems By Cliff Blackshear

H

eading to Atlanta for training on suspension and alignments. I suspect the class will focus at least one full day on ACC (Automatic Cruise Control) and LCA (Lane Change Assist) systems. We have been dealing with these systems for a few years now, and so far they have been pretty bullet proof. Setting up calibration equipment is cumbersome and timeconsuming. Everything depends on accurate set up when calibrating these systems. I have only done the set ups for LCA and (oh yeah) back-up camera in class, and it has been a while. Meanwhile our main alignment technician, Robert

McDaniel, has got a good handle on the ins and outs of set up. Several others in the shop have also done this at least in a training class. The ACC set up seems the most interesting to me. Sensors are set up on a jig (or adjustment device as the factory likes to call it) and on the rear wheels. Once everything is leveled and steering toe angle is set to the optimum setting, a laser beam is then used to see if the radar unit is also ready for calibration. If the laser isn’t happy, you pretty much have to tweak everything. If you have not driven a car with Automatic Cruise Control, it is, to say the least, interesting, especially if you become brave enough to try it in town traffic. The car will brake all the way to

a stop when car in front stops for a red light. The system can be set up to maintain different distances from cars. It’s kinda spooky at times. On the highway it is a nice feature for long trips, where spirited fun driving isn’t possible. There is one thing that is particularly aggravating, and isn’t a fault of the ACC system. When in heavy traffic, like around DFW tollways, and the system is trying to maintain, say, three car lengths from the vehicle ahead, if people keep diving into your lane in front of you, the car immediately applies the brakes to get back to distance at which it is set to run. Either you set it to follow as closely as it will allow, or just do not use it. I like the lane-change assist system also. LEDs in the mirror

housing light up when a car is off yer 6 and hard to see. It too is a cumbersome system to calibrate. The back up camera is the same thing, although I gotta admit that the back up camera, especially when backing up in the workshop, is an extremely useful device. Again, I have to say, as complex as these systems are, they have been virtually trouble-free systems. The only Auto Cruise system I have seen that needed adjustment was on a Cayenne that had been crashed and the front unit had been replaced. It is possible Robert has done some that I am unaware of. Anyway, off to Atlanta on Monday. We will of course look at PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management), PSM (Porsche Stability Management), PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control), and I’m sure much will be discussed about TPM (Tire Pressure Monitoring).

TPM can be challenging to diagnose at times. While in the shop the systems will not only see their own wheel sensor but other cars’ sensors as well. If the system is put into “learn” mode to calibrate

This Hunter alignment system uses digital cameras to assist with adjustments to new sensors, or recalibrate to existing sensors, the car has to be out of the shop and not too close to other Porsches. We can monitor the

system while in motion and see the sensors identified to each wheel. Values are available for each showing not just tire pressure, but also battery life left and temperature of the sensor. When the battery life gets near 20 months remaining, the sensors seem to get a little sketchy as far as reliable signaling. That’s usually after around 3-4 years of service life. Bear in mind TPM is a DOT mandate since 2006. This seems far from that first 1962 356 on which I adjusted the valves when I was 16. Or just the fact that when I started at a Porsche franchise, the cars did not come with radios or air conditioning. They had a horn, lights, wind up windows, a heater, and manual seats. Fuel systems were limited to mechanical injection or carburetors. No automatic transmission . . . well, OK, Sportomatic was available. Cheers!

January Happy Hour: Wildwood Grill By Rick Schwausch

cannot think of a better way to start off the New Year than spending time with friends who share a common passion: cars, and especially Porsches. The January Happy Hour was spent at Wildwood Grill in Southlake.

This year, the accommodations turned out a bit better than last year. A year ago was the first time my wife, Katie, and I hosted a Happy Hour. She had called ahead at least a month in advance to reserve space at the restaurant. When we arrived there to set up, the manager was a little concerned because the private room had al-

they had the private room booked in her name, not for the Porsche Club. (I kept wondering why the private room remained empty all evening as we sat outside on the patio.) Oh well, best laid plans. This year we had all of the logistics worked out - the private room was ready and waiting when we arrived.

A little while later, Katie received a call on her cell phone from the manager asking if we were coming. She informed him that we were already there. It turned out

The restaurant also provided some delicious appetizers which the group quickly devoured. ing a new concept for the club: Driving Friendships Getaway #1. The idea is to get a group of fellow club members to take weekend trips together. The first of these events is scheduled for February 15 through 18 and the destination is Fredericksburg, TX. The drive to Fredericksburg is beautiful and will be a lot of fun in your Porsche, plus the town itself is a great place to explore. It is also known for the shopping and restaurants. There is also a number of wineries in the area. I highly recommend Becker Vineyard, located just west of Fredericksburg on Hwy 290. It is my understanding that President George Bush bought out the entire inventory of their 2002 Merlot to serve to dignitaries visiting his ranch in Crawford. I personally prefer the Cabernet Reserve, sold exclusively at the winery. John Harvey and his wife BJ were also in attendance. I understand

that John has added another Porsche. He recently purchased

Madhu and Roshni Rao, Happy Hour Chair Mike Farrar, and BJ and John Harvey a 997 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, in red no less, to go along with his Boxster. (I assume that Porsches are another shared passion between BJ and John, like their love for tandem bicycling.) I was also able to spend a lot of time visiting with Doug and Cheryl

Once you are on grid, your instructor will find you. During the first run session, your instructor will drive your car (with your permission) slowly for 2-3 laps. Then you will pull in to the pit lane and change seats, after which you will drive

the remainder of the session. Remaining Sessions of the Event You will be wearing a helmet for all subsequent sessions, so please bring it with you. Arrive on the grid when the green flag is flying, or 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time (adjusted by announcements if needed). The Grid Master will give the signal indicating five minutes to go; this is your cue to get into the car and secure your seat belt and helmet. Shortly you will receive the three minute signal; start your car if it is not already running, with sunroof closed and side windows down. Turn the air conditioning and radio off, and check your gauges. Your indication to the Grid Master that you ready is to give the thumbs-up signal out your window. He will signal to you and wave you out of grid. Proceed slowly to the pit lane and onto the track.

Your instructor will be with you both days. If you have any questions, or for some reason you are not comfortable with your instructor, please talk to the team lead or the Drivers’ Education Chair, and a different instructor can be substituted if necessary. Second Day For two-day events, a mandatory drivers’ meeting takes place at 7:30 on the second day, and once again there will be a Green group meeting at 8:00. Please repeat the car preparation process from Saturday. Porsches, Sunshine, and Good Friends The Drivers’ Education event is an excellent format to enjoy what your Porsche was built for – performance driving. The Maverick Region is proud to present these opportunities for you to experience the most from your Porsche, and meet some fantastic new friends. See you there!

continued from page 25 Koeppen. They split their time between Texas and New Hampshire. Doug is a retired pilot with American Airlines, and they now live in a fly in/fly out community in Sanger where they each have their own planes. Cheryl recently earned her pilot’s license and flies a classic 1946 Cessna “tail dragger.” This is an airplane that is built for cruising and not for speed, but sounds very cool nonetheless.

I will also have to admit that since I am a long way away from any retirement, a mere mention of someone retiring for the second time makes me doubly jealous. Frank Briggs is doing just that. He worked in the banking industry for a long time, and he is also one of the hosts for the PCA Happy Hour circuit, contributing many articles to Slipstream over the years. He had gone back to work for Boardwalk Porsche and seemed to truly enjoy his time being around customers and their cars, but now he is now giving all of that up to live the easy life that is welldeserved. Is Bobbie smiling in that photo because Frank will be home more often, or is that a grimace? Be sure to join us in Grapevine at Love & War in Texas for the March Happy Hour!

continued from page 27 promotional piece to get the information out, targeted to the folks that have not been running with us. As of this writing, we already have enough folks signed up for the Feb 24 Autocross at Dallas Raceway in Crandall (which is bigger than Pennington Field, our AX site in Bedford) to break even. A bonus is that there is a concession stand there, open from 11am to 2pm - good burger-type food. Bill Miller quipped “I might bring my 914 -- is there a fire station nearby?” (laughter all around…) Region VP Gareth Maurice shared that there are new observer reports and new insurance provider requirements. Gareth is also writing the New Member Party article - see elsewhere in this issue. Thank you! Slipstream editor Carey Spreen took his report platform opportunity to add to Brendan’s report about the Rancho Sereno Tour in May by saying that the plan is to have a Rally to the destination as well, although taking a different route. He also noted that, at the All Member Party, he had a couple of people express interest in the Assistant Editor position. The meeting went full circle back to John, who announced that the Mav of the Month is

the new Social Chair, Tracy Robertson. John then closed with “Great job on the New Member Party, Tracy! And thank you, everyone!” Meeting adjourned at 8:39pm.
