Shifting Gears: Your Club Wants You! By Jim Falgout, Region President

I

hope you made it out to the All Member Party on January 24. Over 250 of our members (and some guests) did. There were over 123 Porsches for everyone to enjoy viewing: everything from 356s to a 918. It was held at the Hackberry Creek Country Club, which was a very good venue. We will have that function there again next year. I even met a couple in the parking lot who belonged to the club, owned a Porsche, but were not members. They were so impressed with the party that they are joining - and they are not the only ones to do so. Maverick Region was fourth among all PCA regions in new members in 2014, and we had 30 new members in January. Joining is the first but not the last step. Next is finding a activity that you enjoy. We have a variety to choose from. Please look through Slipstream, our website, and the calendars to find those you might be interested in. Then after you have found an activity that you enjoy, see how you can help making that activity enjoyable for others. We are a volunteer organization and volunteers are the heart and soul of it. Plus you will get so much more enjoyment by participating. While our region has a variety of activities for our members to enjoy, there are other PCA activities that you can enjoy. PCA has a few national events that it sponsors each year. The most significant one is Parade. Parade does not always involve a “Parade”, although I understand that it often does. There are several activities including organized drives through the countryside, autocross events, social events, and much more. Best of all, you get to meet Porsche owners from other parts of the country. It is being held in French Lick, Indiana this year from June 21 through June 27. Registration opens on March 17, so go to www.pca.org to register. Closer to home, Maverick Region, along with Lone Star (Houston area) and Hill Country (Austin area) Regions, is sponsoring a Club Race and limited Drivers’ Education event at the COTA track in Austin on May 8 - 10. The DE is limited to only advanced classes, so not everyone will be able to participate, but if you have never seen that facility, you should go for this event. It is truly a first class track and facility. You can be a spectator or you can volunteer. (Do you de-

2 March

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 tect a recurring theme in my articles?) Either way it can be a lot of fun. So follow the three steps: Look through Slipstream or the website for activity or activities you might enjoy, attend some to find those you enjoy the most, and then help in the running of those activities. (This is not to say you cannot enjoy more than one – I certainly do.) YOUR CLUB WANTS YOU . . . to get involved. Come join the fun.

Mav of the Month I continue to be impressed with the level of passion and enthusiasm of so many members of your club. It was really difficult to select one person each month to commend. This month’s selection does a lot of his activity behind the scenes. He has been arranging sponsorship for our DE’s and Club Race. When the chairman of the DE committee has a time conflict with an event, he steps up and fills the responsibilities of that position. The Mav of the Month for March is Daren Kirbo. Thank you Daren for all that you do. Your great passion and enthusiasm is a great example for others.

A

s I write this in mid-February, the northeastern US is experiencing record-breaking snowfalls, while here in the DFW area we have been basking in 60-70 degree temperatures, at least during the daylight hours. While those of us with allwheel-drive Porsches might want to try a drive in that New England snow just to see how the cars deal with the white stuff, it’s nice to know that the rest of us, whose rear-drive Porsches wait impatiently in our garages for the driving season to begin, don’t have much longer to go. By the time you read this, the first Autocross of the year in partnership with Equipe Rapide will have taken place at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. If you missed it, or are still on the fence about what it’s all about, check out Autocross Chair Wes Lincoln’s article on page 22. He answers a lot of questions you might have about what to expect at one of these very fun, very competitive, yet very safe driving events. As you have likely heard before, “every Porsche is a race car,” and there is no better place to safely learn the limits of your car than

at an Autocross, so come on out this month to see for yourself. There are two in March (22 and 29), both at Lone Star Park. For something a bit more high-speed, the second event in our Drivers’ Education series takes place the weekend of March 14-15. If you have wondered what it’s like to drive your car on a real racetrack at speed, a DE is the place to be. Your instructor will show you the fastest and safest way around the track, and you will have a blast learning how to do it! If you’re wondering just what it takes to pass a DE Tech Inspection, you’re in luck. Our Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix will be hosting a Tech Session on just that subject at his shop, Mullenix Motorsport, on Saturday, March 21. Go see what will pass and what won’t . . . Sunday Drive Co-Chairs Tom Martin and Neill Flood also have their inaugural tour this month, starting in Garland and ending up at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum at Addison Airport. Should be a fun drive. We have lots of stuff to do, so try something new! Read on!

Gimme a Minute: January Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

P

resident Jim Falgout began the meeting promptly at 7:00. He first reported for absent Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich. We have reached a new all-time high of 1506 primary members and 2371 total members. Our region was ranked 4th nationally last year for actual member growth. Jim mentioned that it’s time again for the National Awards (Enthusiast, Family, Public Service, and Region of the Year) submissions. The board members will think of possibilities and make suggestions directly to Jim. Monthly Dinner Social Chair Stephanie Ho said that there were more than 80 people at the December event and more than 60 in January! Our February event is at the Hilton Garden Inn, where they will give us 50% off drinks. The May event is scheduled for Lavendou in Plano, with a 25% food discount. She is also working to organize a wine dinner in addition to the normal scheduled events. VP Gareth Maurice has all insurance taken care of for DE events. Concours Chair Andy Kay has set up a detailing session for Saturday, April 18 at Jack Griffin’s Garage (see ad for details). May 2 will be the May at Mayo’s Show and Shine Concours event, and June 7 will be the Autos In the Park concours at the Cooper Aerobics Center. He is working with Griot’s Garage for giveaway items for concours events. Social Chair Tracy Robertson reminded us that board meeting dinner needs to start promptly at 6:30 to ensure there’s enough time for food serving and consumption before the 7 PM meeting start. Due to the huge success of the All Mem-

6 March

ber Party, she has already reserved next year’s date again at Hackberry Creek Country Club. Many thanks to the event chairs for being there, and for those who came early to help organize everything, particularly the parking! Even with this year’s sponsorship from Vatter Financial, the club spent around $1000, but it was well worth it for our turnout. She will be looking for a sponsor for next year. She is also working on the details for the May at Mayo’s event. We might have to limit attendance to avoid overcrowding. We discussed several solutions, including limiting dinner to just those who pre-registered. A date for Founders’ Day has been set for Saturday, Nov. 7, moving it back to the traditional time frame. PR Chair Linda Bambina thought the parking at the All Member Party was fantastic this year! The Slipstream target date is to be in mailboxes by the 1st of the month. Carey Spreen has consistently been spot on with his part of it. The only delays have been with others. She is excited to be helping new Editor Jim Hirsch as much as possible. Incoming Editor Jim Hirsch mentioned that Richard Solomon recently started a MRPCA Linked In group and suggested that we could utilize other social media outlets like Twitter. Jim is willing to manage the Twitter feed for us. We were in agreement to try and also that the Linked In site should be kept professional, with Facebook having the more casual social content. Editor Carey Spreen reported that we are up to 1700 printed issues (+50 from last month) due to increasing membership. Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix has planned an event on Saturday, March 21 (see ad for details). He commented that at the All Member Party, once we had the “formal” presentation, there

February 4, 2015 was no time afterwards to talk with people. Several suggestions for improvement were made. Sunday Drive Co-Chair Neill Flood said that the drives planning is coming along nicely with guidance from past chairs John Harvey and Brendan Eagan. They are set for 2015. Rally Co-Chair Don Sebert is planning a Gimmick Rally for Saturday, April 25. He is looking for an interesting destination. Several members tossed around ideas and he will continue asking for other suggestions. Mike Brodigan mentioned that Alexis Campbell has retired from the Silver Fox, but the chef has taken over in her place and will graciously continue to provide us with gift certificates for Mav of the Month. Mike will be working with Stephanie Ho to help find monthly dinner social locations. The concept is to alternate months East and West of I-35E in the metroplex. He also inquired about reviving the Round Up event for the summer. It’s a 2-3 day “multievent weekend” that is a lot of fun, but a lot of work. Linda Bambina will take it under advisement, as the most recent event chair. Travis Howard announced that there will be an end-of-year Autocross Awards banquet on Feb 21 at North Main Street BBQ in Euless. AX/TT awards will be presented. The location has an all-you-can-eat buffet, but is BYOB. Autocross Chair Wes Lincoln reminded everyone that Feb 22 is the first event under the Equipe Rapide umbrella. He encouraged everyone to sign up by going to autocross. com and following the links. Sign up for one or all (for a discount). Events will be nearly every month. Sunday Drive Co-Chair Tom Martin has the first Sunday Drive planned for March 22. He was

thankful that the pre-drive he did showed a major road closed, so he can now re-route appropriately. Starting at the Firewheel Mall (Potbelly Sandwich Shop) and ending at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, it should take maybe 2½ hours. He is looking to take RSVPs, as the drives are getting too large for “driveups.” He also wants to upgrade the technology we have to make sure all drive leaders have a good GPS to use. Saturday, April 18 will be the next Drive to the Ennis Bluebonnets. He is busy planning others. DE Registrar Wendy Shoffit mentioned that the Feb 14-15 event has lower attendance than expected, probably due to it being Valentine’s Day. Still hoping to have a surplus at the end, but we’ll see. July 18, the War Bonnet Region in Oklahoma City will be hosting a Ladies’ Autocross and wants to get some Maverick ladies to attend (quite possibly will have an instructional element). Jim Falgout reported for absentee Treasurer Richard Solomon that we have money. He passed out financial reports for everyone to see. As a follow up to last month’s board meeting, Jim suggested that the club hold $120K in reserves for future club needs. Lastly, Jim announced that the Mav of the Month is Daren Kirbo because of all his hard work at DEs (sponsorship and filling in for the DE chair). The meeting was adjourned at 8:36 PM.

“ . . . it’s the people”: Fran Ussery – “Driving Friendships” By Linda Bambina, Region PR Chair Author’s note: As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, Fran came up with the perfect tag line, “Maverick Region: Driving Friendships for 50 years.”

M

averick Region is a remarkably strong and active region. Throughout our 53 years, there have been some really devoted members who have made a huge difference in a variety of aspects of running our club. I’ll start with one of our most remarkable members: Fran Ussery. Fran joined Maverick Region in 1980 along with husband Carl and their killer ’73 914 (Ayisha). Avid Autocrossers, Fran and Carl quickly joined the Board as Autocross Chairs. The Ussery family: Adam, By 1982 Erin, Fran, and Carl the couple had received the coveted Selcer Award. She would win this award again in 1987 while juggling her third year as Slipstream Editor, as well as being DFW Parade Goodie Store Chair extraordinaire. But her real contribution to our region began when she was enthusiastically elected President in 1984. Fran brought a strong sense of organization to the Board and Region while she set her sights on getting more women involved in all aspects and activities of the club which was an unusual idea at the time. Fran organized “Ladies Only” Autocross School events where not even 8 March

the instructors or observers were men. We had Big Hat Luncheons, and other social gatherings. At our monthly Dinner Program Meetings, we women focused on the wives of our members to find out how they felt about driving their husband’s Porsche. Our goal was to help the women get past their fears about driving such special sports cars. It worked. After visiting with other regions in Texas and at Parade, we discovered how really unusual and versatile our club was becoming with so many women on the Board. In 1987 we hosted the Parade with a woman (another true-to-life maverick, Teri Davis) as Parade Chair. Fran went over the top as Goodie Store Chair with four separate hotel meeting rooms stocked with all things Texan or Porsche: clothing (the likes of which has never been surpassed), car parts, books, memorabilia, glassware, art, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, and more. When she was Hospitality Chair at the San Antonio Parade in ’97, she offered so much more than snacks and tables for visiting. She found sponsors for funky food and beverage tastings, she had space and activities for kids; video games for bigger kids, visits from the Michelin Man, and the Orca from Sea World. She had music, she had slide shows, she had vendors, and she had notebooks full of things to do in San Antonio! At the Fort Worth Parade in 2004, Fran did even more as Hospitality Chair since she had an even bigger room! Fran went on to join the National PCR (Parade Competition Rules) Committee for 11 years. She remained the only woman on that prestigious committee the whole time. She has also won many

Parade driving trophies in Ayisha as well as their 2000 yellow Boxster S, “Jezabell”. Fran has always been an original Lead Foot Leader with Ed Mayo, Bryan Henderson and Les Moncus as her instructors. Son Adam has obviously inherited his mother’s Lead Foot talents. Fran and Carl (Ussery Printing) have printed Slipstream since soon after they joined. To reduce costs for the club, Fran organized Slipstream “parties” where we members collated, stapled, trimmed, labeled, sorted, counted and mailed the “newsletter” to the DFW area. It made for some terrific memories and cemented some great friendships. She remains our #1 touchstone with getting Slipstream printed and mailed and she is still one of my best friends.

Lisa Steele congratulating Fran as a Parade award winner Maverick Region has had three people win the highest individual National Award at Parade, known as the “Enthusiast of the Year.” In 1985, that honor went to Fran Ussery. Lanean Hughes (deceased ‘06) got it in 2000, and Wendy Shoffit in 2005. Wendy will be my next Wonderful Woman of this feature “. . . it’s the people.” I would also like to invite others to contribute to this monthly column with your favorite Maverick member.

Destination Restoration:

Five Speed Chatter: Newest Maverick Member!

By Ash Seidl-Staley

I

want to start off this month’s article with an apology regarding the coverage of my suspension rebuild. This month was supposed to be about the replacement and installation of my 914’s brake pads and rotors, but this will not be the case.

Although I am happy to report that my build is complete, I was not able to write up the step by step process I took to remove, clean, and reinstall these components. I have had a crazy month, one that has changed my life forever! I will be picking back up with the brakes next month, but with a heavier emphasis on rebuilding brake calipers and installing rotors. I will omit the procedures and steps regarding brake pads and brake bleeding for now. Maybe a fellow Slipstream contributor will tackle the project in an upcoming maintenance article. (Wink-wink, nudge-nudge!) Having said all that, I would now like to take the time to introduce the newest member of Maverick Region PCA. Everyone, meet my beautiful son Christian Hans Seidl-Staley, who came into this world on February 4, 2015 at the Lake Pointe Medical Center in Rowlett, Texas. His very existence has jolted my soul and altered my perception on life. I now know what millions of parents and a majority of Mavericks feel—an overwhelming sense of love, devotion, and happiness for my family. My life will never be the same again! All of The newest Maverick! my obligations and priorities have taken on a deeper meaning; my goals and ambitions are now all centered on my new family’s wellbeing. It is impossible to describe the emotions I have running through my body right now. In the past month I have become a nurturer, a protector, and a role model for one of the most precious gifts anyone can be given. In short, I have become a Father and I Love it! With a family history deeply rooted in admiring and owning vintage Porsches, I have little doubt in my mind that Christian will take up the torch I will pass on 12 March

to him – the very same torch passed on to me from my Grandfather. Jenny and I are already trying to inadvertently steer Christian down the winding Porsche roads. His room is heavily saturated with cars and large Porsche models from both my childhood and my grandfather’s collections, and when he is old enough to lift a wrench he will be spending quality time with daddy under the hood. Realistically, I know that whether or not he dives down the Porsche rabbit hole will ultimately be up to him. I would be just as happy and proud of him if he decided to become a doctor or a lawyer rather than a Porsche-sponsored race car driver. But a father can dream right? Personally, my money is on the race car driver. Everything about Christian screams race car driver; he loves his five point harness, he smiles on car rides, and he even musters a squeaky little chuckle when I make hair pin turns with his stroller. To top it all off, Christian was born at 9:24 in the morning! If that’s not divine foreshadowing, then I don’t know what is.

All Member Party: Hackberry Creek Country Club By Carey Spreen Photos by Charlie Davis

E

very year in January for many years, Maverick Region has held a get-together for new members to meet with the club on an informal basis to find out what we do and why we do it. We used to call it the New Member Party, but after a while, we realized that only the new members were attending, which was great, but we also wanted the more experienced members to Although the Porsche lineup was colorful and show up so that the new memmesmerizing, the All Member Party highlights bers would have someone who that our club is “all about the people” could answer their questions. For that reason, a few years ago, we renamed our little get-together the All Member Party, so as to attract new and “experienced” members alike. Each year it got a bit bigger; originally they were held at members’ homes, but pretty soon there were so many folks showing up that we needed larger venues. Last year we decided to host the All Member Party at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. This is the same facility at which we hold our monthly board meetings, so we know the place well (and they know us). A plus is that it is centrally located in the Metroplex. Last year’s event was such a success that returning this year was a foregone conclusion, and the icing on the cake was that Maverick 16 March

member Michael Vatter offered to sponsor the event to help defray the costs that we necessarily incur in putting it on. And like last year, we broke the attendance record. More than 100 Porsches and over 200 members and members-to-be arrived to view the wide variety of cars in the full-to-overflowing parking lot. Every decade of Porsches was represented, from the 356s and early 911s and 912s of the ‘50s and ‘60s, to 914s, later 911s, and 928s from the ‘70s, and onward to what many feel is currently the pinnacle of the Porsche family, a real live 918 Spyder showed up.

It seemed that some thought it was going to be a “cars and coffee” type event, until they found out that there was food, drink, and an actual program waiting for them inside! During the program, newly-elected Region President Jim Falgout took the time to introduce each and every event chair, giving them time to describe what events they ran, and why the membership might be interested in trying them out.

Not even the widest angle lens could begin to capture all of the members’ rides in one frame. Photo by James Weber

We hope you had a chance to attend this year’s All Member Party, but if you weren’t able to do so, rest assured that there will be plenty of chances to meet your fellow Porschephiles this year. And yes, the 2016 edition of the All Member Party will be right back here again!

All Member Party: A New Member Perspective By Jim Hirsch Photos by Charlie Davis

I

’ve been a PCA/Maverick member since March 2014. I joined as soon as my Porsche Boxster S was in production and assigned a VIN. Almost immediately I began to receive information from the Maverick group about the wide variety of member events provided locally. In addition, the PCA organization kept me informed of national events. Everything from social get togethers, to club racing, to PorschePlatz areas for TUDOR Championship races, to detailing and tech sessions, to Sunday Drives, and much more was offered to me as potential opportunities to get involved. At this point, there was no question in my mind. The PCA, and in particular the Maverick Region, were certainly delivering on their motto: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”!

Frank Briggs, Stephanie Ho, and Jeff Sebert

Scoash Moore

After attending a few events, including Board meetings, it became obvious that the longtime members were excited to meet new members and anxious to get everyone involved in club activities. So, it was a “no-brainer” when it came time to attend the All Member Party in January. It would be a chance to see an amazing number and variety of Porsche vehicles, but more importantly, an opportunity to meet even more Maverick members and begin new friendships. As Carey mentioned in the previous page, the attendance was great. My wife and I met so many new friends that this event will be a permanent fixture on our future calendars. We hope to see you at the next one! And since this is “about the people”, please enjoy these member photos from the event.

Beginning Autocross: What to Expect at Your First Event By Wes Lincoln, Autocross Chair

B

efore my first Autocross, I did not know what to expect. I was apprehensive because it was new to me. I feared the unknown aspects of this sport. Little did I know how much fun I was going to have. The interests that led me to the Porsche Club in the beginning stirred my interest in Autocross. First, I wanted to meet people who were Porsche enthusiasts. I wanted to experience the social aspect of Porsche ownership. Second, I wanted to improve my driving skills. There are many ways to become a better driver. Autocross is one of the most stimulating, safe, and costeffective methods of accomplishing this goal. Third, I wanted to experience the thrill of “spirited” driving.

Education and Autocross that are not typical of normal driving. For example, the brake systems, for cars that are used in Autocross, must be checked and flushed annually. The cost of a brake flush is worth every penny, and all of the Porsche repair facilities that advertise in Slipstream will discuss this with you. Before I bought my 1994 911, I formed a relationship with a local shop that has continued to this day. Several times each year I will stop by and discuss repair or upgrade plans I have for the car. They are always willing to take the time to talk to me, and sometimes will steer me away from unnecessary work. Porsches are race cars that are built

Most of the preparation for Autocross takes place before you arrive at the event.

Before The Event Make sure your car will pass Tech Inspection. Most of the preparation for Autocross takes place before you arrive at the event. Your car must be ready for braking, accelerating and turning in ways not usually experienced on the street. However, this is easily accomplished. The Porsche repair facilities around the Metroplex are experienced in this type of inspection. In fact, most of them complete the inspection in a complementary manner. The inspection follows the requirements for cars entered in our Drivers’ Education program. This “inspection checklist” can be found at mav.pca.org/Events/ DE.asp; click the Tech Form link to download the tech inspection form. The reason we do this is because there are certain requirements for cars used in Time Trials, Drivers’ 22 March

to handle everyday driving, and are well equipped for the demands of Autocross, but the inspection process is required for your safety and the reliability of your car. Select a driver number. Consult the Equipe Rapide website (www. autocross.com) for help in choosing a unique number. If you want to use vinyl or magnetic numbers, they will have to be ordered ahead of time, so give yourself plenty of time to receive them. Painter’s tape is perfectly acceptable, but must be of a color that contrasts with the color of your car so it can be easily read from a distance. At most events, shoe polish or window paint is not allowed. Also note that, if there will be more than one driver in the car, each driver will need his/her own number.

Wash and clean your car. Washing the car makes it look great, provides a clean, grit-free surface for your numbers, and clears all the bugs off your windshield so you can see perfectly. Clean out all loose items from the interior and trunk. This is easier to do at home rather than at the event. Loose items include all the things in your door pockets, glove box, and trunk that are not bolted down. My spare tire is bolted down in my trunk and I leave it there, but you can choose to remove it if you so desire. However, I would recommend removing it at the event in case of a puncture en route. Floor mats should be removed because you do not want them to float under the accelerator or brake pedal. Check your tire pressures. Inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s recommendations printed on the inside of your driver’s door panel, or as published in the owner’s manual, and check those pressures the morning of the event. Please do not skip this step – it is extremely important. Check the lug nuts on each wheel. Your owner’s manual has torque specifications for your lug nuts and it is advisable to use a torque wrench when tightening lug nuts. Consider buying this tool if it is not already in your toolbox. Alloy wheels have a tendency to crack if the lug nuts are over-tightened. As you become more experienced, you may want to purchase an extra set of wheels and mount high performance tires. This means that wheel changes will become more frequent and a torque wrench will become a necessity. Fill your gas tank. You do not want to run out of gas at the event and your car may have better balance with a full or, nearly full, tank.

Buy a new helmet. The best way to have a helmet that fits well is to buy one. Sometimes loaner helmets are available at the event, but they may not fit, may have been worn by many sweaty guys, and are usually not very cool in appearance. Please read the rules for helmets, posted on www.autocross.com. Old helmets from your dirt bike days will probably not meet the current requirements; they must be in compliance with one of the three most recent Snell standards (2005, 2010, or 2015 when they become available). There are many helmet manufacturers, but fit and comfort are very important aspects to consider when purchasing. This piece of safety equipment is to protect you from head injury. The question comes down to this: how much is your head worth? Sign up and pay the entry fee for the event. This can be completed online (www.autocross.com). The sign up procedure will include what car you will be driving, your drivers’ identification numbers, the class in which you will be competing, and other important details, such as emergency contact information. Now you are ready. Your shop has inspected the important aspects of your car, suspension, brakes, tires, oil and fluid levels. You have prepared your car by choosing your number, cleaning inside and out, checking tire pressures and torque specifications, removing floor mats, filling your gas tank, and you have bought a helmet and signed up for the event. When You Arrive At The Event Please arrive early. The earlier you arrive, the more information you will receive and the more time you will have to walk the course. Autocross participants are allowed to walk the course prior to the event. We do not drive our cars on the course until told to do so.

Find a place to park. Leave enough room in front or in back of the car to unload. Find the registrar. Let him or her know who you are, and sign the waiver. If this is your first event, let the registrar know. They may suggest an instructor. If they don’t suggest an instructor, inquire about instruction – it is free. Unload the car. Clean out any loose items, tools, lug wrench, phone, garage door opener, etcetera. Take this opportunity to place your numbers on your car, typically on the doors. Raise the hood and trunk of your car and place your helmet in a location where it can be inspected. This signals that your car is ready for the course and can be tech inspected. A final tech inspection is completed at each event. Cars

Crawl, Walk, Run. This of course means to start slowly and increase your speed as the day progresses. cannot enter the course until they have passed tech inspection, shown with a small sticker that the inspector puts on the windshield. Find out when you can walk the course. This is most important. You will be amazed at how much this helps. If this is your first event and you have been connected with an instructor, walk the course with your instructor. If you have not been assigned an instructor, find a group of people who are walking and talking about the course. In addition to learning the course, observe the location of the grid, pits and start and finish lines. Attend the drivers’ meeting. The drivers’ meeting is mandatory; if you do not attend, you may forfeit your morning runs. Your work

assignments, driving order, and special instructions may be part of this meeting. This meeting is full of information that is used to run a safe and successful event, and you will find that safety is the most important characteristic of Autocross and Autocross participants. The purpose of the drivers’ meeting is to focus on your safety. For example, the maximum speed in the pits (the place where you parked) is usually 10 mph. Know your work assignment. In order to safely and effectively run an Autocross event, everyone’s help is needed. Your work assignment will give you a bird’s eye view of how to drive the course. I learn more about “the line” (a term you will become very familiar with) by observing other drivers than by driving the course myself. Typically the entire field of competitors is divided into two groups. While one group is working, the other is driving. Now you are ready to proceed either to your worker assignment or to the grid, depending on which run group your car is in. Remember to be patient, relaxed and focused. If you are waiting on the grid, recall the course in your mind. Think of the line you will take through each corner. If you are lucky enough to have an instructor, put on your best student demeanor and follow his or her instructions. Your instructor will ride with you until they believe you know your way around the course and are ready to drive solo. The words that, to me, are most appropriate are: Crawl, Walk, Run. This of course means to start slowly and increase your speed as the day progresses. You will end the day with a feeling of elation. The type of feeling that causes you to anticipate the next event like a child waiting for Christmas. So get your car prepared and sign up for the two events scheduled for March! 23
