SPROCKETS: Unexpected Connections by David Robertson, Region President

I connect with a lot of Porsche people, certainly in Maverick Region, but also in everyday conversations with people in my travels, other social clubs, and in speaking with business partners and clients across the country. In many cases I have known these people for a long time but never realized that we have this passion in common. Sometimes I see them getting into or out of a Porsche and say, “Hey, you never told me you have a Porsche, are you in the club?” Sometimes I see them at club events and never realized that they are members. Once this connection is made, the conversation always seems to end up in the same place whenever we see each other again: Porsche. I have met so many people that turn out to be passionate about Porsche I often try to determine ways to find out if someone I am talking to may be in the Porsche camp. It seems a bit strange to come right out and say that I drive a 911 every day, rain or shine, and don’t think I could live without it. In addition, I don’t mention in everyday conversation that I am in the Porsche Club, where we spend just about every weekend getting together and either driving or talking about our Porsches or gawking at and talking about each other’s Porsches.

One cannot assume that an individual is or is not a Porsche person, but once the connection is made, there is never a lack of conversation. All Porsche people have an interesting story to tell! MAV OF THE MONTH: Bob Kramer One of the most important people at our track driving events is the Safety Chair. This person makes sure that these events are safe for everyone and all procedures are being followed at or above the National PCA standards. This is obviously a very important role and sometimes requires tough on-the-spot decisions to make sure the event is as safe as possible. 2 March

Bob Kramer is the Maverick Region Safety Chair, and anyone involved in our track events will tell you that we are very fortunate to have him in that role. The 2019 Drivers’ Education program includes some great changes, making it more enjoyable for participants, and there are also new mandates from PCA that must be implemented this year. Bob has spent countless hours working with the rest of the team to include all of these updates into the program from the perspective of safety being our first priority. He has deep experience in other track programs and brings this to the Maverick DE program as well. Thank you Bob for everything you do for the Maverick Region!

So You Want to Sell Your Car by Mike Mahoney

So you want to sell your car. Now what?

Do you consign it to a dealer? Trade it in on a new car? Or do you try selling to a private party? If so, where do you market it? PCA classifieds? Facebook marketplace? Hemmings? Craigslist? Or what

about a live auction? Or an online auction like Ebay or Bring a Trailer? All good ideas, and many sellers have success stories for each. But what is the right market for your car? This past December, I found myself asking these same questions when I decided to sell my Emerald Green Metallic 1976 911S Targa. After much reflection, I was compelled to try Bring a Trailer, despite my mixed emotions. My hesitation comes from my experience window-shopping and bidding on BaT, which -- don’t get me wrong -- I thoroughly enjoy. But, if you’ve been on the site and shopped or bid, you know what I mean. When you post your car on 6 March

photos provided by Michael Durovick BaT, you’d better have your ducks in a row. Because if you haven’t prepared appropriately, the BaT faithful auction trollers will point out your listings shortcomings very quickly. You need to enter the auction with your eyes open, and understand that the BaT

auction audience is watching and will not hesitate to comment and ask questions. Your responses and

responsiveness will make or break your auction. I knew that before I listed my car, but was still a little leery. I did have an advantage though, because last summer I had won an auction and experienced it up close and personal. But I also knew being a seller would be a very different experience. Listing your car BaT has a basic process for preparing your car listing, which typically takes about two weeks. Upon completion of the initial sign up form, which requires having a credit card on file, and after your car is accepted by BaT (not every car makes the cut), and you pay your $99 fee, you’re assigned an auction specialist. Together, you and your specialist, over email, work to assemble an accurate and enticing listing of your car. The listing includes specific details about your car, like mileage, previous ownership, maintenance, accidents, and major work done, along with professional-quality photos and videos of interior, exterior, undercarriage, engine

compartment, and receipts. You will also need to decide on a “reserve,” which is a minimum selling price you are willing to accept. Once you’ve submitted your car information and photos, your auction specialist will review, and after about a week will email a draft of your listing. They will also review your reserve price and either agree or suggest an adjustment. Note: you don’t have to have a reserve. Some suggest that a “no reserve” auction is a way to create excitement and interest, since the car will definitely sell, which it does, but it is a risk for the seller. You really never know how an auction is going to go. But all you need are two bidders interested in your car to create an environment where you are most likely to get your price. Anyway, back to the listing prep. After any editing that’s needed, you will approve the listing and submit it for posting. It usually takes a day or two before your listing is “live,” at which time your seven-day auction begins. The auction Having your car go live on BaT is pretty exhilarating, waiting for the first comment and the first bid, and holding your breath that an auction troller doesn’t ask a question you’re not prepared for. You really need to stay close to your phone or computer during the auction. You are notified via email each time a bid is placed and when questions are asked. But you need to keep tabs on the auction within BaT so you can answer questions in a timely manner. I’ll pass along some advice I was given before my auction. A friend in the club told me to stay calm and keep my favorite adult beverage handy, and it was much appreciated and needed.

It’s always the comments and questions from the auction followers who you know full well have no intention of bidding. They’re the ones that hit a nerve. But you just have to remember to stay calm and don’t respond with a knee-jerk reaction. Pause, take a swig, and ponder your response before posting. It’s important to note that not all questions or comments require a response. But when responding, it is most important to use the handle of the user to ensure they see the answer and that it doesn’t get lost in the sea of comments. The last thing you want is someone questioning the seller’s responsiveness. As you get close to the end of the auction, this is where the excitement begins. That is, if you have a couple interested parties. And you don’t always know that until you get to about the 1-hour mark. the most exciting time is within the 2-minute mark. Most of the time it’s a bidder that has not commented or asked a question. And suddenly within 30 minutes of the auction’s end, they place a bid. When the auction end is within two minutes, the clock is extended by an additional two minutes after every bid, but that ends after about the fourth extension. One reason for this is that BaT takes a 5% fee from the bidder’s credit card on file when they place a bid, which ensures serious bidders only. It is refunded if they are not the winning bidder. When the auction is over, the fee is charged to the buyer’s card. And hopefully you have sold your car. If not, the auction ends with “reserve not met.” Something important to note here: if the auction gets close to your reserve, BaT reserves the right to make up the difference to make the sale. This makes sense but obviously the final bid needs to be

close enough where they still make money from the buyer’s 5% fee. After the auction Upon completion of the auction, and you’ve sold your car, BaT will send you the contact information of the winning bidder. They suggest you reach out to the winner as soon as possible to set up a time to complete the transaction and take delivery of the car. BaT suggests that you have funds wire transferred rather than cash or cashier’s check. And I agree. It’s easy and the safest way to get paid. In the event the transaction between the buyer and seller can’t be completed, there are steps you can take through BaT to have your buyer’s fee refunded. All in all, I’m a fan of Bring a Trailer. I think the environment actually protects both the buyer and seller and is a good option for selling your car. But I recognize that not every car is a good fit. I will say, though, that in my case, it worked well and I think the buyer felt the same. So how did I do with my auction? Well I sold my car, for a price I thought was fair to both parties. The transaction after the auction was painless. The auction itself was smooth, fun to watch, and got really exciting during the last two minutes. So I was happy. If you choose to sell your car on BaT, in my opinion the three most important factors for a successful auction are: 1. Set a realistic reserve and understand the true market value of your car. 2. Invest in professional photos. 3. Be upfront about your car’s flaws and point them out, because, believe me, if you don’t, the BaT faithful will. 7

Mavs & Mochas: Neiman Marcus at Willow Bend by Pat Carmichael

It was 35 degrees as I rolled into the Neiman Marcus parking garage at Willow Bend Mall about 8:15 am, and lo and behold, everybody was already there! I snagged a parking place near the end of the fourth row of Porsches and started making my way to the coffee bar inside Neiman’s. What a spread! Gratis coffee, breakfast burritos, and orange mimosas all ready to go for the PCA faithful. The Neiman Marcus staff, led by Marjon Zabihi and Rusty Smith, personally welcomed us.

10 March

pphotos provided by Paul Moseley

They had set up tables with several drawings for luxury specialty items near the entry, prompting a frenzy of activity filling out entries. Did I mention the exclusive opportunity to shop? What a great time this all made, with a warm cozy place to gather and enjoy the special Neiman hospitality. A half dozen “more than fun” track-worthy Porsche cars lined up at the south entry porte-cochère, offering special up-close photo ops. The “official” count of attending cars was well over 120. This is certainly one of the more popular venues, being under cover and protected from the elements, especially on a chilly day like this. Our buddies from Park Place Porsche were there with their latest white Cayenne and offering service insights to the PCA members. Mark and Monda Hanna were there, with not one but two 914 race cars, and I know all the 911 9xx flavors were in attendance. I don’t believe anybody had their tops down in any Cabs or Boxsters -- ha! Even with the cold there were plenty of people mingling outside and sharing stories on all things car-related and beyond. By 10:30 am, we were leaving, and there were almost eight full rows of Porsches. Another completely successful Mavs & Mochas! We’ll be looking forward to the upcoming All Member drive and party in Gunter, TX!

2019 Autocross Series: Autocrossing is “Four” Porsches by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by Robert Kirby of Lightspeed Images

Autocrossing is for all Porsches, including the new four-door and and old four-cylinder models. For 2019, to better align our autocross car control classes to the majority of the new 4-door Porsche owners, as well as bring some of those neat old four-cylinder cars from the ‘50s and ‘60s back from the museums and Show & Shine events, we added a class that will put you all together to have some fun. No longer do the Cayennes, Macans, and Panameras have to mix it up with Boxsters and Caymans. No longer do any of the early four-cylinder Porsches have to take on the 914 mid-engine brigade. You guys get to come play in your own class. Modern, big, and powerful vs early, small, and light cars are all in class P0. This should be fun! Even SCCA has added a class for Classic Sports Cars: HCS and R for the old real race cars. No more excuses! Come out and show us what you’ve got, what you have or what you had, or to learn to drive again! See our 2019 autocross schedule on the facing page.

Also, at the 2018 year end awards banquet, below are some of the Porsche class winners showing off their awards. In particular, one driver out of over 300 participants in the 10-event series last year, who ran in a highly competitive class, had to come from behind more than a few times, got lucky a few times, and won his class in all ten events, earning 100 points for the season: Mark Schnoerr, your MAVPCA Autocross Chair.

Choose Carefully: Part Two by Robert Turner It’s not so much that I am an automotive journalist. I’ve checked, the pay ain’t so great. Or an autoindustry pundit, ditto about the pay part. No, I think of myself as an observer of things automotive. More of an automotive chronicler about all things Porsche. A monthly column kinda guy that writes from the heart. Most of the time. But there are times when I would love to be that guy that gets the call from an automotive manufacturer—BIG hint here Porsche— and a voice says something pithy like “How do you feel about The Steffel Pass in Zandfortin or the lovely Isle of Marjorie in the Delfinium Islands? Think you might fancy a trip there? Oh, and we will throw in some cars for you to drive.” At this point, the writer is supposed to pause for a few seconds to leave the automotive marketing types hanging—like you’ll really turn them down—before saying very causally, “Let me check my calendar and see if those dates work.”

Inside you are shouting, YES! I would cancel my wedding or try to delay the birth of my child to go there. And YES! I may even possibly be persuaded—definitely maybe—that I could squeeze in driving some fast cars too.

(Oh, and I hear that they ply you with good food and very good drink. Lots of it.) So you deliberately slow down your brain and try to be uber cool and nonchalant and work your mouth very carefully to say each word S L O W L Y, so you don’t end up sounding like an idiot. But that never works. You’ll blurt out “ Ye s I w o u l d l o v e t o g o t o Z a n d f o r t i n y e s p l e a s e thankyouverymuch.” Or something that is probably very close to unintelligible. The suave auto-marketing types knows what your response will be, so he tells you to check your inbox, ‘cause the itinerary will be forthcoming. You hang up and start packing right away, even though the trip is five weeks out. You do want to be prepared after all. What does this have to do with a car company’s configurator? Well, I will get around to it - eventually. See the auto companies want the Journos to write glowingly about their new offerings. They pick beautiful places, take over high-star hotels and make those hardworking Journos sit through a mind numbing half hour to forty-five minutes of marketing speak before turning them loose in the car of the moment. But wait there’s more. They usually put every bell and whistle on the car to make sure that all the good stuff gets tested and written about. 14 March

Problem is, when the writer is talking about this button here, that switch there or this sub-set of commands in the dark innards of the car’s performance capabilities, we are left lusting and wanting for things that we may not need or are too expensive to buy. I mean I would love to listen to a gold-plated Bergfarb Grand Marquis sound system, but probably won’t pony for the seven large to buy it. And the micromium plated multi-faceted sport design exhaust at a mind numbing four big ones will probably not be one of the boxes I tick off. But the Journos? Man they love it. It’s pretty easy to turn a $60K car into a $80K (or at least $70K) car nowadays. And in Porsche’s case, a $100K car into a $150K car in a snap. Someday when I configure my 911, I may remember some writer with his hair on fire, going 120 MPH into a screaming long sweeper and talking about how the PDCC with Sport Chrono really sets the handling tone. But me, I will just opt for the PASM Sports Suspension at $890 and be done with it. I don’t mind if my eyeballs giggle on the road, I just want to take that corner at 125. Oh Baby. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.

by Mike Mahoney, Concours Chair The 2019 Concours season is finally upon us.So fire up your buffers and shine those tires! This year we will have four events, beginning in April. April 7 - Judged Show and Shine at Brookhaven July 14 - People’s Choice at Lakeside Market Oct 6 - Judged Show and Shine at Brookhaven Dec 7 - People’s Choice in conjunction with Founder’s Day events

The April 7th Porsche Promenade is a “Top down show and shine” event meaning the judges will only be looking for cleanliness of easily visible parts of your Porsche and not checking every nut, screw, and clamp for originality. Your preparations for the event are pretty straightforward. Clean your car the best that you can. This includes the interior and exterior, engine bay, luggage compartment(s), wheels (rims and barrels), door jams, and other less noticeable areas you may not normally clean. Judges will be looking at each car in great detail for cleanliness only to differentiate clean from extremely clean. We will have multiple judges for each class to ensure consistency of scores. Each class is individually judged and competition is within each class. Good Luck and we look forward to seeing you there.

Rolex 24 Hours: At Daytona Press Release Daytona Beach, FL— Nick Boulle and team survived error and flood to finish in seventh position at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona. Despite epic floods and quickly changing conditions, the team recovered in order to

16 March

record its highest place finish in the twice-around-theclock classic since its inception. Team Principal, Patrick Lindsey, started the race and quickly set about moving up several places as he ran well within the top 10 for the first hour of the race. The car was then handed over to Boulle and later Porsche Young Professional, Matt Campbell, and Porsche Factory Driver, Patrick Long, for their first stints of the grueling endurance race. “This race is so competitive from the moment you get in for your first stint,” Boulle said. “The first time I got in the car it was immediately a sprint.” Endurance Driver Boulle’s second stint in the car would be double-stint – referring to a twohour run with two stops for fuel and tires rather than a single hour run in the car before a driver change. During this run from roughly 9PM to 11PM, the team saw Boulle take the lead of the race before eventually pitting to hand the car over to Campbell in second place. “When I got back in for my second stint, I was faced with class traffic as well as trying to maintain the lead. The car had great pace and the crew did a

clean job in the pits. We’ve got a really great foundation to build on moving forward.” Adversity struck for the first time here as the right rear wheel became dislodged as Campbell exited pit lane which led to the #73 Porsche GT3R losing several laps on the leaders. As the race continued, through strategy and pace the team of drivers and crew recovered to get the car back on the lead lap by the time the sun was coming up on Sunday morning! Boulle, Lindsey, Campbell and Long all felt positive as the race wound down despite red flags and uncharacteristically heavy rain. Long and Campbell, spent the majority of their time in the car searching for any sign of grip on the track in the final hours of the race. A combination of oil and water sent multiple competitors off track, into walls and each other. Long barely escaped a multicar pileup, maneuvering the #73 through turns 10 and 11. Campbell steered clear of any on-track drama and made his way to the front of the field. Boulle and Lindsey handled a majority of the driving Saturday and Saturday night. The race compiled 18 fullcourse cautions in total, nine of which Lindsey and Boulle endured over the course of their stint. Both drivers kept the #73 de Boulle Porsche clean and turning consistent lap times while fighting to earn laps back. With two hours remaining and hours of hard work by the drivers and a sleepless night for the crew, the #73 Park Place Motorsports de Boulle Porsche 911 GT3R was leading the pack around the Daytona Road Course. As

the rain began to fall more heavily, the team opted to in hopes of coming out ahead as the race wound down and go for the top step of the podium. However, just as the pit sequence began a red flag was thrown due to the flooded conditions of the race track. After waiting for two hours on an update from the officials on, it was determined that the 57th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona would finish under red. “It obviously is heartbreaking to pit from the lead and lose out on winning the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, but it’s a big year and we just need to focus forward now.” Boulles next race is at Sebring International Raceway for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Advanced Auto Parts. “I’m looking forward to the 12 Hours of Sebring and seeing what we can do,” said Boulle. The weekend is part of a Super Sebring weekend featuring the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship. Lindsey will race in both the traditional 12-hour race Saturday, March 16, and the FIA 1,000 miles of Sebring Friday, March 15, with Project 1, both supported by Park Place Motorsports.

Maverick Marktpreis is proudly sponsored by:

Maverick Marktpreis: 911 Speedster by Peter Wen Last year during its 70th year celebration, Porsche unveiled a 911 Speedster concept car. It was based on the outgoing 991-generation 911. With the overwhelming positive response, Porsche later announced they will begin production of the new Speedster in 2019. It will be the fourth 911 Speedster, following the 1989 G-series, the 1994 964, and the 2011 997 Speedsters. The original Porsche Speedster was produced 19541958 based on the legendary 356. Porsche resurrected the

Speedster nameplate in 1989 to close out the G-series 911 (1974-1989). It generated much needed brand excitement and sales boost for the new 964. They repeated this successful formula through today. All 911 Speedsters are end-of-gen specials with limited production numbers. With their unique styling (lower windshields and twin-hump tonneau covers) and top performance parts, 911 Speedsters are true collectibles from Day 1.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder This month’s “conversation” is another one that took me my surprise. I have “known” this guy through Slipstream in my 25 years of membership, but not until the last few years did I ever meet him. Come to think of it, with all of you reading Slipstream, it’s safe to say many of you will know him from his picture every month, typically on page 4 with the rest of the board members, as well as numerous articles he’s written over the years. Once you meet him you quickly realize that not only is he the nicest man you will ever meet but he knows more about our club than most and certainly than many of us remember. It’s my privilege to share his story as he celebrates his 40th Anniversary as a PCA member.

photos provided by Pat Carmichael BK: What was your first car in high school? CS: Actually, I didn’t have a car. I had a motorcycle that I would ride to school. Funny as I think about it now; I was in the band and played trumpet so I would have this big case to carry on the bike. Must have been quite the sight (laughing). BK: Presume you eventually got a car right? CS: I did; but wasn’t until my second year of college. It was of all things a 1974 VW “Thing.” It was even in this olive drab color. It was a great introduction to “momentum” cars!

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you….

BK: So how long did you live out there? CS: Oh, I didn’t find a job and my dad finally said, “think it’s about time you come home,” since he was paying my travel expenses. I came back and actually ended up in Austin working for the local PBS station as a videotape operator, back when tape was the only way to record video. If you have ever watched Austin City Limits back in the ‘80’s, I’m actually in the credits (chuckling).

Bill Kruder: So are you originally from the Dallas Fort Worth area? Carey Spreen No, I was born in New Jersey and lived in Connecticut and Rhode Island until I was about 15, when we moved to Plano.

BK: Wow so you went to high school here then? CS: I did. I went to the old Plano High School, now Williams, before there was what is now Plano Senior. I graduated in 1974. 20 March

BK: What was your first Porsche? CS: Well like I said I was really taken by that 914 so in 1976 I traded the “Thing” in for a ‘74 Lime Green 914 that had the 1.8-liter engine. I had a lot of fun in that car. When I graduated college my cousin and I needed a job so we decide to drive out to San Diego. It was that trip that I did my first PCA autocross. I signed up for it and ran a couple of laps before someone came up and said that I needed to be a PCA member to enter, so I joined on the spot. That was 1979 and it was one of the best decisions I was ever forced to make! BK: How long did you keep the 914? CS: I kept that one for about six years, selling it in 1982.

Carey Spreen, Member since 1979, Owner 1982 911SC, 1987 924S, and 2008 Cayenne

BK: How did you end up in Plano; not sure there was much there back then? CS: Well my mom’s sister had moved here in 1972 and we came for a visit, and I guess my parents really liked it as my dad took a banking job in Dallas the next year.

a family friend had a 914, I just thought that was the coolest car. Guess you can say I dreamed about owning one some day.

BK: How about College? CS: Went to Texas A&M for my first two years then transferred to Texas Tech, so I graduated a Red Raider, although once you’re an Aggie, you’re always an Aggie. BK: How did you get interested in Porsche? CS: When I was in high school

BK: When did you return to Dallas? CS: After Austin I was in Dallas through 1989 as a Maverick, then got transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I was an active member of the Golden Gate Region. I then spent about 18 months in Portland (Oregon Region) until finally returning back here in 1998 and settling in DFW again.

BK: Let’s go back to PCA then. You started in San Diego, then you became a Maverick? CS: With my moving around I have actually been a member of five different regions, including being a Maverick twice. My first was from 1986-89 then again from 1998 till now, so I have been a Mav for 25 of my 40 years in the club. BK: Whoa - you have seen some changes, and I know you have always been involved. What are some of the positions you have held? CS: Of all things I think the first was Co-VP but I have been Editor, Time Trial Chair, Rally Chair, DE Instructor, Content Editor, and currently Region Secretary. BK: I’m told you have been to your fair share of Parades? CS: Guess you could say that. My first was in 1987 right here in DFW and I have been to 22 others over the years. BK: Let’s talk about cars; I hear you have had your share of Porsches over the years? CS: That I have. After the ‘74 914, I bought a ‘70 914 that had been converted to a six, with a 2.2 S engine, which was Signal Orange. In 1985, I bought a Tangerine

Opposite Page: 1982 autocross class win Above: Carey with ole pal Derek Bell at Rennsport V Below: Wolfgang Porsche presenting TTOD trophy to Carey - 1989 Porsche Parade

Well as usual I always walk away surprised at what life brings us in meeting people when we just stop or are stopped to say hello. As Carey told me several times during our chat: over the 40 years, it’s really about the people. It doesn’t matter if you are an attendee or a chairperson - it’s the people. Today we call that Driving Friendships. Here’s to 40 years Carey!

1970 914-6, a real one this time. I kept this one for over 20 years, selling it in 2006. I also briefly owned a silver 1973 911S, but ended up selling it when my daughter Geneva was born. BK: Ok, so tell me one thing that most will never know about you? CS: Well I kind of mentioned earlier that I play the trumpet. I played in both my high school and college marching bands. Then after college when I was in Austin, I was a member of the Austin Community Band; we would play two to three concerts a year. Guess you could say music has always been kind of a hobby to me. 21

Aging Gracefully: No A/C, No Airbag, No Problem by Kurt Scaggs The other day I was watching an older episode of The Grand Tour with famous Porsche-hater Jeremy Clarkson, and it got me thinking. The hosts were complaining about the cost of classic cars and how they are better to look at than to drive. They cited examples of older cars that had been updated by the likes of Singer and AMG, or an E-Type with a 6.1 liter V12 as what it took to make older cars entertaining. I disagree and I think I’m not alone. I’m not sure what the statistics are comparing classic and modern owners in the club but I know we have a healthy contingent of older cars. I know that many have had many Porsches over the years (some still do) and have first-hand experience with these cars even if they do not have one currently. I am a classic owner and I’m relatively new to the brand. I’ve always kept up with the latest and greatest 911s through the pages of Car and Driver, but for some reason I got hooked on the old ones. My previous “classic” cars were motivated by fiscal responsibility. While they would technically qualify as antique cars today, I can assure you they are not collectible today or any day. But don’t think I picked Porsche because they were collectible. What I think Clarkson and crew are missing is the joy of having fun on public streets.

is that they don’t need much anyway. The ‘87 Carrera pictured has needed oil, air filters, tires, and a clutch after 76,000 miles and it’s still bank vault solid. I doubt any car I’ve ever owned could say that -- even the Hondas. I’m not saying that old Porsches are the best cars in the world (they are, incidentally) I’m just saying that somebody knew what they were doing and cost savings did not get in the way of executing their vision. That’s part of what gives these cars their mystique. They aren’t flashy. They aren’t trendy. They do what they do and they do it well. As long as you don’t want

It’s hard enough to find a place to wring out a 33-year-old turbo and not scare little children. I can only imagine what I’d do with 700 horsepower on the way to the grocery store. Chances are I’d only be doing it once.

to be cool during the summer. But who needs that really? It doesn’t make it faster, or handle any better. These cars are just a joy to drive. The parts work together, mostly. And it’s kind of a kick to see someone look for the ignition on the right side of the wheel. What they lack in power massaging memory seats, they more than make up for in auditory and olfactory bliss. Take that Tesla. Old Porsches are still my favorite cars to drive. I never look in the garage and think, I really need to take that SUV out for a drive and clear my head. There is nothing better than sitting down low, turning the key and listening to flat six fire up. An air-cooled flat six. No, there is one thing. Sitting down low with a chorus of Porsches nearing redline. Truly driving friendships.

To me there is value in doing things yourself, whether that is troubleshooting the vacuum system or keeping the brakes from locking up. Why does anyone bother to open the hood of a modern car? I remember a comedian joking about the chances of opening your hood only to find a big on/off switch under there. We keep taking steps in that direction, don’t we? Anyway, my experience with “old” Porsches thus far 30 March

PCA events at the track! Also 930’s finally appreciating to decent levels! I’ve owned them since 1986 and 1990.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

One year ago on these pages I made my editorial debut if you will. It began with equal parts excitement and trepidation. That has since cleared up and looking back now, I can almost remember what it was like to not have a reoccurring 15th of the month deadline. I can also remember the first Maverick event that I attended and wondering what I had gotten myself into. It turns out I had gotten myself into a great situation for once. Friendly people, and as the Grinch would say: oh the noise, the noise noise, noise, noise. I celebrated my 5 year anniversary last year and prior to agreeing to be the next editor, I was a part-time member. I would attend 3-4 events a year that mostly centered on driving the car, and not talking to the people. Luckily that’s allowed, but I found that they also encourage the talking if you’re so inclined. You can probably see where this is going. It’s our annual fund raising drive and if you just call the number on your screen, one of our operators will be happy to chat you up. If only it were that easy. No, what I’m attempting to do is get you excited about volunteering. I don’t have a surprise celebrity guest or a tote bag, but I can tell you that you’ll get to know some great people and find a way to spend all that extra time that you have.

And there’s also the corporate jet. (There is no corporate jet) Kidding aside, if you’ve ever thought about volunteering, or you really do have some free time, it’s a great thing. Did you know that you can volunteer without committing to a board member position? It’s true! Drive leaders, corner workers, event check-in, photographers no experience necessary. Well, there is some experience necessary, but if you’ve made it this far, I think you can probably manage. I know our event chairs are always looking for someone to share their experiences or photos of their events. What I’m saying is that if you have an interest, we’ll find a spot for you. Just think about the fame and notoriety you’ll garner with your friends and family and event fellow members at the next Maverick event. I have really enjoyed being your editor for the past 12 issues, and look forward to continuing. I’ve gotten a lot out of being a more active member of the club, and if you’re not I think you might too. Give it some thought, contact Landon Stogner our volunteer chair or check the website to sign up. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming. It’ll be fun. Enjoy the drive!
