Taycan. Rhymes with icon. Park Place presents a classic in the making: the new Taycan. It’s the first all-electric Porsche ever produced—and a high-performance sports car through and through. With two permanent-magnet synchronous motors generating up to 750 hp and acceleration faster than a skydiver in free fall. Plus, an 800-volt battery that can be partially recharged to add up to 62 miles of range in just over five minutes. And this iconic Porsche comes equipped with a legendary dealership experience.

That’s what makes Park Place feel like Your Place.

Board Botschaft: 2020 Events Have Already Started! by Carey Spreen, Region Vice President In case you’ve been wondering, it was Region President Bill Kruder’s idea to divvy up this column amongst the four elected Board members, so that each of us has a chance every quarter to communicate with Maverick Region members. In the past, this space belonged to the Region President only, so we all agreed that it was a great idea to allow the four of us to take turns sharing our general and/or specific viewpoints with you. So here is my Botschaft (message) to you. Since Maverick Region is in an area that typically enjoys warmer weather than much of the rest of the country, our events and event series start early in the year, then take a break in the summer, returning again in the fall. Our very popular Coffee Meets and Monthly Socials of course take place all year round. The month that just ended featured the year’s first autocross and Drivers’ Education events, as well as a Tech Session, so I hope you were able to check out at least one of them. If you didn’t, you can sample more in March: not one but two autocrosses, another Drivers’ Education weekend, another Tech Session, and the first tour of the year, to our Alle Mitglieder (All Member) Party. April has even more in store for us. See our events calendar at http://mav.pca.org/Calendar/ to see what’s coming up!

I would also like to direct your attention to PCA’s annual weeklong celebration, known as the Porsche Parade, which will be held this year near Palm Springs, CA from June 21 through 27. If you have never experienced a Parade, I enthusiastically recommend attending. It combines several competitive events, tours, social events, and banquets, all celebrating Porsches and the PCA members who drive them.

Or for those of you who consider Palm Springs too hot or too far away, mark your calendars for next year, when it will be held in French Lick, Indiana, less than 900 miles from most locations in the DFW area. It is an experience not to be missed. Registration is already open for this year’s Parade; for more details, visit https://www.porscheparade.org/. We hope you attend a Maverick Region event soon – you’ll be glad you did!

MAV OF THE MONTH: Tom & Ginger Heuerman Tom and Ginger are approaching their 5th anniversary with the PCA, and over that time they have been very active members. You may have remembered that Ginger put her talents to work when she hand-stitched the Maverick Region Logo quilt that was auctioned off during our Founders Day Party back in 2017. That’s just one of the many activities they have helped with, and it doesn’t stop there. Tom and Ginger just recently stepped in to run the Rally program as Co-Chairs. They have participated in so many Rallies - they are super-excited and preparing for the Easter Rally coming up in April. Tom and Ginger are great examples of how our club stays Fueled By Volunteers. Please join me in congratulating them as our Mavericks of the Month! 2 March

All Member Party and Tour Preview by Sam Bryant, Tours Co-Chair Spring is right around the corner, and it’s time to get your Porsche in order for a great tour season. We have to get those Porsches waxed and coated in time for the All Member Tour and Party! Our first tour for the 2020 season is the All Member Driving Tour and is scheduled for March 22 at 10 am which is the first official weekend of spring! The driving tour this year is 48.4 miles and lasts about an hour. We have two classes for driving tours. Choose Vintage class if you want a more relaxed scenic tour, or Modern class for the same tour as we have provided in the past. Whichever class you choose, it’s your decision, no matter what Porsche you drive. After you register, we will send you all the information needed to attend, three days before the tour. We also hand out packets the day of the tour with all the information as well. The Drivers’ Briefing

will begin at 10 am. Most tour attendees arrive early to meet new friends and socialize with everyone. There is a $5.00 registration fee per Porsche this year for the tour. It will start at Grayson College, 1455 W. Van Alstyne Parkway, Van Alstyne, Tx 75495. This year’s route will take us through long straightaways, winding roads, and elevation changes. You will pass through the towns of Van Alstyne, Weston, Celina, Pilot Point, and Tioga, finally arriving at our destination. At the destination, the fun will begin at 11 am. This will be at One Preston 6 March

photos by Michael Durovick

Event Center Carriage House, 50 Whispering Winds Road, Gunter, Texas 75058. Once inside, you will find the country breakfast bar, including eggs, smoked Applewood Bacon, sausage patties, breakfast potatoes, seasonal fruit. I almost forgot about the Southern Biscuit Bar! Warm biscuits, buttermilk fried chicken, and all the toppings. This was a big hit last year, so we ordered double for this year. Should be enough! Registration is now open. The brunch is $25.00 per person. New members are our special guests with FREE registration discount codes available; email social@mavpca.org to get yours!

Meet your 2020 Executive Board by the Executive Board

Bill Kruder, President

Debi and Bill Kruder

How long have you been a member? We joined in the spring of 1996, went to a couple things but as we say life gets in the way and never really did anything until about four years ago. After meeting Jim Hirsch, then Slipstream Editor, he asked me to serve the club in being the Advertising Chair. Shortly there after I volunteered to do a monthly piece that is now Coffee, Cars and Conversation. Fast forward and I was asked to run for President. Long story short, we have been members now for 24 years. Occupation? I’m a 40-year JC Penney Co veteran. Matter of fact, it’s the only company I ever worked for and was interviewed only once in my life in 1973 for a $2.50 an hour sales associate position just out of high school starting college. I’m now retired doing what I tell friends I do best … nothing. Family? Debi and I have three children, two daughters and a son. Our oldest is Maggie 28, Carson 24 and our son Conor is 22. Interest? I’m an avid reader of hard cover books, skiing, and anything Porsche. Fun fact . . . my books are time capsules. They contain photos, event tickets, and anything that might have been going on in my life while reading! 8 March

What do we drive? We are the proud owners of four air-cooled cars, each from a different decade. 1964 356C, 1972 914, 1982 911 SC, and a 1996 993. Favorite Maverick activity? Anything involving coffee and Porsches, we attend just about every Mavs & Mochas, all annual socials, as my wife Debi is the chairperson, an occasional Happy Hour and many “impromptus” organized on our FB page.

Carey Spreen, Vice President How long have you been a member? I have been a PCA member for 41 years, since 1979. I have been a member of five different PCA regions, but have belonged to Maverick Region for 25 years. Occupation? I’m a television engineer by trade, but I currently am an Integration Engineer at a company that creates software for TV distributors to provide addressable television advertising. Family? I have a daughter Geneva, age 23, who recently joined the US Navy as a Cryptology Technician/Interpreter. She is a Porsche fan too, having

Carey Spreen

competed in several autocrosses. She has attended 13 Porsche Parades and hopes to own her own Porsche someday soon. I met my girlfriend Sue in 2013 and she has become a Porsche enthusiast as well, becoming an avid autocrosser and Parade-goer! Interests? I enjoy reading, watching movies, autocrossing, and road trips, not necessarily in that order! What do we drive? I have a 1982 911SC coupe, a 2004 Boxster S 550 Edition, and a 2008 Cayenne base model. The Cayenne is the daily driver. Favorite Maverick activity? Autocross, Drivers’ Education (although I have not been able to attend a DE in awhile), Rally events, and tours top my list of region activities.

Jennifer Parma, Region Secretary How long have you been a member? I bought my 2007 Midnight Blue Boxster about four years ago, but it wasn’t until I attended my first Mavs and Mochas event in 2018 that I finally made it official and joined the PCA. Occupation? I was a paralegal for about 15 or so years, first in personal injury but then mostly in the medical malpractice field. It was a challenge every day to go to work hearing and seeing horrific stories, especially when it involved the death of a child. I made it my mission to get out of this career and subsequently I was able to retire a few years ago. Family? I have two daughters, Lauren is 26 and lives by White Rock Lake. Natalie is 17 and is attending Richland College and is about to receive her associates degree. Both girls have made being a mom very rewarding! Interest? I will state the obvious and say I love

driving my Porsche, especially with the top down on a beautiful, sunny day! I also love to hit the gym and cycle all of the awesome trails that Dallas has to offer. And kitties....Lucy and Hazel bring me great joy. What do I drive? 2007 Porsche Boxster, 2016 Jaguar F Type R, 2008 Mercedes E350

We’ll give you an assist on your future goals.

Contact me to learn how you can get the most out of retirement. Natalie, Jennifer and Lauren

Favorite Maverick activity? I try to attend every Mavs & Mochas event but for the smaller crowd, I love the Sunday impromptu meet ups for coffee where we can sit around and just talk and chill for a couple of hours. I love the concours, the tours and the All Member Party but the Founder’s Day has to be my favorite day of the year!

Insure. Prepare. Retire.

Chris Flaugh, Treasurer How long have you been a member? Although I bought my first Porsche in 1995, I didn’t join PCA until 20 years later, in 2015. One of the first Maverick members I met was Jim Hirsch, who encouraged me to volunteer for the Goodie Store role, which I fulfilled until being asked to consider becoming Treasurer.

Debi Kruder, Chris Flaugh and Frank Zack

Occupation? After completing a Finance degree, my first career was in banking. Later obtaining a MBA, I went to the lottery industry as part of the startup team for the Indiana Lottery. I moved to Austin in 1992 to help start the Texas Lottery, then on to Dallas with GTE/Verizon. I currently divide my

time between real estate and automotive brokerage. Family? My husband Frank Zack and I live in north Dallas with two dogs; both are Boxers we adopted through Legacy Boxer Rescue: Cowboy and Etta. Frank is Director of Beverage and Operations for Neiman Marcus restaurants, and has been with the company over 20 years. Interest? Travel. Our latest trip was to Greece. If you’re ever in Athens, the Hellenic Motor Museum is a must-see. One of our most exciting trips was to Spain when we ran with the bulls in Pamplona. We also love road trips, and take an annual road trip to Aspen in June, in a Porsche. Last year was in a Boxster, the year before in a 911 . . . not sure yet what it will be this year. What do we drive? We currently have three Porsches in the garage: 1980 928, 1981 928, 2008 Cayenne S. Current non-Porsches include a Mercedes S600 and Audi A3 TDI. But that lineup is subject to change at any time! Favorite Maverick activity? I really enjoy the Tours - it’s a great opportunity to get out and drive, often followed by a lunch or other social event. That’s the wonderful thing about this club . . . there truly is something for everyone. 9

I pointed to my own nearby car; it has a PDK. Based on my casual calculations, it comes up within the “I searched the whole country for a car in first four or five postings. that color with PDK. Glancing at the pad, I saw he’d added a hash in a “Real Porsche” Will I buy another manual transmission car? What?! column. I just couldn’t help myself. Of course I will, in a second. But it will be a classic like a 951 or 968. And it sure as hell will have the original “What ‘cha doing?” cassette player because when you’re going manual, you “Counting Porsches to see which may as well be completely Old School. ones are real and which ones aren’t.” And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.

February Mavs & Mochas: RAC Performance by Pat Carmichael

photos provided by Michael Durovick & Bill Middleton

It was a bright and sunny day at RAC Performance, and more than 130 Porsche cars showed up bright and early to take advantage. It all made for a wonderful gathering. There were donuts and coffee, and several of the attendees brought bags and bags of food for the M&M PCA food drive. There were also many cars lined up along the curbs on Skyline Drive from one end to the other. Several of the cars sported a run up and down the road offering tones of power everyone recognizes as Porsches, being Porsche . . . . RAC performance also had quite a lineup and display of cars inside the building being offered for sale. There were dozens and dozens of cars inside their main warehouse showroom, and there were many of the more elite P-cars of the high performance varieties, especially one of the new 911 Speedsters in Carmine Red, all in the front entry showroom behind the glass. It’s always fun at the RAC performance Mavs & Mochas. The friendly people show us a good time and open their doors for us all. It’s always a good Maverick crowd, and we were real lucky to have great weather. I can’t wait until the March event, when we’re off to Poston Gardens in Waxahachie. Everybody take care and we’ll see y’all there!

Maverick Marktpreis: 912 by Peter Wen What do you get when you put a 356 flat-four engine inside a 911 body? Well, you get a sweetness called 912, a superbhandling entry level Porsche. Back in 1965, as Porsche closed out the chapter on the patriarchal 356 with the now iconic 911 and its flat-six engine, Porsche needed a lower priced four-cylinder model to drive sales. Enter the 912. The sweet combination of the boxer four engine and 901 (911) body proved to be a huge hit. Upon introduction in 1965 through 1967, 912 outsold 911 by nearly 2-to-1. Besides the engine differences, the two models are nearly identical. Early 912 has a 3-gauge cluster compared to 911’s 5-gauge. It has a 4-speed transmission instead of 911’s 5-speed. While the 912 generated 40 hp less than the original 911, it more than made up for it by weighing 200 lbs less. Back in 1965, test

drivers reported the 912 offered neater, less tail-happy handling, and at times, could be driven faster than the 911! The original 912 was produced through 1969. It was superseded by the new 914. Interestingly, Porsche brought the 912 back for a 1-year only production in 1976 (912E), again, to bridge the gap between the end of 914 production and the upcoming launch of 924 in 1977. The 912E was based on the impact-bumper generation 911. Only 2,099 (912E) examples were produced. 912 deserves a spot in your stable. As the saying goes, it has the engine that made Porsche famous, and the body that made it a legend. Early 912 examples are still fairly attainable compared to the long hood 911s. Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder So, another chance meeting about a year ago on a cold January morning at the monthly Motoring Mavs at Mayo. As I recall, we were all huddled near the coffee when this young man walked by that I’d never seen before. We started talking, of course, about our cars and he mentioned he had a 914. Well, one of ours is a 914 too, so we struck up a conversation, and when he started asking questions about a couple of things, I quickly connected him with Ed Mayo. Shortly thereafter I went to check the cars out and I spotted this great-looking Sunflower Yellow 914 and put two and two together. I caught back up with the owner to find out that he also had a 944 and had been attending several Mav events before finally joining PCA. Well as they say, the rest is history, as this couple is now participating in Tours, Rallies, and Coffee Meets as their busy schedule allows.

photos provided by author BK: So why Wisconsin, then IU? KS: Well I took the year off after high school and taught violin, then decided to attend a small school up there and studied String Pedagogy (the teaching of strings). After a year there I decided to go to the music school at IU and pursue a degree in Pipe Organ Performance. BK: Scott isn’t that what you did? SS: As a matter of fact, my degree from IU was also Pipe Organ Performance. We both happened to start the same year.

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Scott and Katie Scheetz, members since 2019 Owners 1973 914, 1979 930, and 1985 944 Bill Kruder: So where are you two from? Scott Scheetz: I’m from Aiken, South Carolina, which is about 2.5 hours east of Atlanta. I was born and raised there and didn’t move until I left for college in Bloomington, home of Indiana University. Katie Scheetz: I’m from Bolingbrook, Illinois, a southwest suburb of Chicago, about 30 miles away. I was born and raised there until I left for school in Wisconsin. I did that for a year then I also landed at IU in Bloomington. 20 March

Katie and Scott Scheetz

BK: So how did you end up in Dallas? I understand you did not come down here together. SS: Well, after graduating from IU in 2015, I had applied at SMU for Seminary school. I graduated from the Perkins School in 2017. KS: After I graduated from IU, I took a year off to do a Fulbright in France and then I applied to graduate school at SMU, unbeknownst to Scott. That’s another story (laughing). BK: Wait, so you weren’t engaged or even dating? SS: No, we were just friends. I mean we texted or emailed now and then but that was it.

BK: So how did you meet? KS: It was at IU. We both applied to the music school and had to audition there the year before we started. The professor had a party for the new students. I remember the day. We had a huge snowstorm and Scott was there. SS: We talked and became good friends during our undergraduate studies. I tried asking her on a date our junior year, but she shut me down. We had our music in common so I guess I was ok with just being friends (smiling). KS: It’s funny, we would go to things and I would introduce Scott as my “colleague” (smiling). I didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea, I guess. BK: So, what happened to change your mind, Katie? KS: Well, once I came down here to SMU, we had classes together and we were friends . . . SS: One day we had lunch with a mentor and the whole lunch he focused the conversation on Katie. He was trying to figure out why two people with so much in common were not together. KS: It’s true. It was after that lunch I realized what I needed to do: date him (laughing). And I guess it worked out ok. We were married in July of 2018. BK: Refresh my memory, what is it that you both do again? KS: I’m the Associate Organist at Highland Park Methodist. SS: I’m the Music Minister and organist for Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Colleyville. BK: So let’s talk cars now, what was your first car? KS: Well, the first car that I bought was my ‘99 10th Anniversary Edition Miata. When Scott took me to buy it, he had to drive it home as

I couldn’t drive a stick. He taught me in my apartment parking lot. SS: Mine? It was a ‘99 Ford Ranger. BK: First Porsche? SS: That would be our 944; we found it on FB Marketplace. We took it for a drive and decided we weren’t going to buy it. As we drove away, we started talking about it more and sure enough, I made a U-turn and we went back to buy it. That was September 2017. KS: Of course, once we had it home, like all older cars it needed repairs and we would be out in the apartment parking lot at all hours

doing repairs. Then one day Scott’s dad appeared with a trailer and took it home with him. Once he had it, he would send us pictures of our car with another 944, then another. As it turned out, his dad bought three other 944s just for the parts! BK: So you come from a car background? SS: I do. My mom and dad both are car people and used to be club racers and paid instructors. My mom had a 1979 Porsche 930 and my dad a 1983 Lamborghini Countach, which he still has. BK: The 930 is the one you now have? SS: Yes it is! My mom gave it to me as a graduation present. It’s black on white, and has some factory upgrades, making it very similar to a 934. BK: When we first met you had your 914 out. Tell me about it. KS: It started after a tour of Auto Atlanta. There was an orange one they were restoring there and I fell in love with it.

SS: Well, my dad had the 944 so we were without a Porsche and we decided to start looking for a 914. We made several attempts to buy one, but each time we found one, it would sell out from under us. So in November 2018, we found one on Craigslist. It’s a ‘73 Sunflower Yellow 1.7 liter. KS: Well it was a 1.7 until we recently did an engine swap to a 2.0 liter. SS: And she does mean WE! Katie is right there with me working on it and we’re both covered in motor oil. And there you have it . . . Driving Friendships!

2020 Easter Hop: Gimmick Rally Preview by Ginger and Tom Heuerman Please join us for our fifth annual Easter gimmick rally! The Easter Hop Porsche Gimmick Rally 2020 is set for Saturday, April 11. Sign-in starts at 10 am in the Turbo Coffee parking lot at 5800 Windhaven Pkwy, The Colony, TX 75056. Note that we are lucky enough to have a Gimmick rally that we can enjoy hanging out and having coffee with our Mavs & Mochas friends first. They are meeting at the same place starting at 8:30. So let’s come early, have fun, and sign up, then have the drivers’ meeting at 10:30. Sign-up will officially begin at 10:00. We will end at the Shumardii’s Bar and Grill in Bonham for libation and lunch, a re-cap of the fun-filled route, and our prestigious award ceremony! The competition for the DLBF (Dead Last But Finished) Award is always fierce! If you joined us in the past for either our Halloween or Easter gimmick rallies, you know how much fun we have. As new rallymeisters we are determined to maintain the excitement and competition. If you are new to gimmick rallying, we assure you that it will be an enjoyable morning. Our goal is to keep everyone on the route, so the drive instructions are not (too) cryptic, as long as you follow a few basic rules. We have planned the rally to go

26 March

from The Colony to Bonham traveling over 79 miles and staying on paved back roads, out of the main stream of traffic as much as possible. This is a tiny bit longer than our normal, with a few tolls, but we know the fun with our Mavs & Mochas friends, as well as the route, is well worth the extra few miles and tolls. Two people at a minimum should be in each car: a driver and a navigator. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged; we will have over thirty cars participating, leaving at one- to two-minute intervals from our starting point, and pre-registration helps in our planning. We will send out General Instructions prior to the rally as well – it helps to understand the basic rules and guidance before rally day. We look forward to seeing you at the Easter Hop Porsche Gimmick Rally 2020!!! • • •

Dear Tire Guy Yes! DE season is back upon us once again and we’re ready for an exciting 2020. So for new PCA members, new DE drivers or even experienced track turners here’s a couple of tips. 1) Tire pressure is one of the most important aspects of tuning your car for the track. Finding this ideal pressure for a track typically involves some trial and error: setting the cold tire pressure based on past experience and then making small adjustments based on driver feedback. If you’re just starting out you’ll be just fine maintaining the OE cold pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. As you move through the next few DE's then it may be time to start playing with those pressures, altering them by 1 or 2 psi as you learn the lines.

2) You need the right tires. Race conditions put tires under FAR more duress than normal road driving, so you want to make sure you have something with aggressive grip to keep you firmly planted on the track. If your DE car is also a commuter you will want something that’s also road legal and comfortable, something like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. If you want a dedicated aggressive race set you could look at something like the Michelin Cup 2, Toyo 888R, or the Nitto NT-01. We’re looking forward to seeing all the familiar PCA faces, and getting to meet the new members as well. If you need tires, you know who to call! (Our number is right at the bottom, hint hint) Until next month Drive On! one. That’s who. Until next month, drive on! –The Tire Guy

2019 Maverick Region Financial Statement by Chris Flaugh, Region Treasurer In the continued interest of complete transparency to our membership, here is the year-end 2019 financial report. This 2019 Statement of Activity, prepared by our previous interim Treasurer, James L. Falgout, CPA, shows a net excess of $29,714 for the year, an improvement over the 2018 figure of $22,020. Our track-related events (Driver Education, Club Race, and COTA) continue to generate strong participation and revenue. This revenue, combined with the generous support we receive from PCA, our local Porsche dealerships, and other businesses, has allowed us to expand and enhance the many events our members enjoy. Our Slipstream advertisers are a critical piece of

this as well, and we appreciate their ongoing support. This strong performance across the board also allowed us to increase our 2019 charitable contributions to $23,651, up from $21,600 the previous year. As noted in last month’s Slipstream, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House has continued to be the Maverick Region’s primary charitable beneficiary. Thank you all for making 2019 another strong financial year for our club. These results make it possible to offer a wide variety of events tailored to a multitude of interests, and also to give back to our community. We look forward to another successful year in 2020!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Last month I revealed a little about my love for cars that underwent some questionable transformations in the 80’s, and that brought up some conversations about what constitutes a “real Porsche”. We’re an opinionated lot I’ve found. This month Robert Turner shares a conversation he had with another enthusiast at one of our fine events and that opens the door on my article this month. So what is a real Porsche? Does it need to have a flat six to qualify? Should only cars with the engine in the back be let into the club? Should they even have automatic transmissions, cup holders and backup cameras? We’ve heard things said in fun like: Oh, the 914 doesn’t count, it was developed with VW. Your 944 is nice, but it isn’t a real Porsche. And why oh why do we need an SUV from our favorite manufacturer? I’ve driven on of those SUV’s, a Turbo Macan, and I can confirm that not only does it have the crest on the hood, it has the soul inside. And while I’m still holding out judgement on the Taycan, I think we can trust the folks in Stuttgart to keep real Porsches rolling out the door that we’ll enjoy driving. They are real, and they are fabulous! A lot has been said throughout the years of controversial Porsches and all of the terrible mistakes the company has made. I read an article a few years ago that aimed to find

the car that represented Porsche’s biggest failure. You know what they decided? It was the Carrera GT. I’m not even going to begin to parse how wrong-headed that is, but I do think it points out something very interesting. If that beautiful and very potent car is considered the biggest failure the company has made, they are doing pretty well. I can’t think of another mainstream manufacturer that can come close to that. My day job is branding and design and Porsche is such an interesting study, on many levels. Their core product is eight generations old, and made its debut in 1963 and launched in 1964. Some perspective: the Ford Mustang also debuted in 1964. It has had six generations, but one of those was the Mustang II. It was based on the Pinto, so there’s that. Ford is making a Mustang based electric crossover, the Mach E. I can’t count the wrong. We call it brand dilution. It might be a great car but imagine if Porsche had named the Cayenne the 911 Xtra. Shudder. The Corvette has had seven generations, beginning in 1953. Not only does the new one have the engine in the back (okay, middle), it just doesn’t look like a Corvette to me at all. But a Porsche still looks like a Porsche. Still drives like a Porsche. So, keep the faith and enjoy the drive.
