Prez Says by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President

T

alk about a rough start to a burgeoning concours program! Let’s see – we had three events scheduled for the same day (Piney Woods tour, Tech Session at Park Place and Driver’s Edge event at MSR), and the weatherman predicted rain! But 10 or so of us went to the top level of the Dillards parking lot at NorthEast Mall, and had a wonderful time! The Boy Scouts all appreciated our cars, and we enjoyed showing them off as well. It was definitely a lot of fun for Wendy, who drove one of the winning Scouts on a thrill ride around the parking garage! Our first Autocross and Time Trial were also huge successes – we had 43 time trialers and 48 autocrossers. There was a 2 hour delay for hail, but there was no damage other than wind damage to Ezups. The autocross course was one of the most fun ones I have driven in a long time – big thanks to Cody for setting that one up! In May, we have the autocross and time trial on the first weekend, the Hill Country Drivers Education event on the 18th and 19th, and then our premier event of the year, the Club Race. The Porsche Store is sponsoring our Club Race this year, and we are aiming higher than ever! We now have experience at this facility, and expect this club race to be a first class show!

Come on out during the Memorial Day weekend to see the cars and the people! If you are Blue Solo’ed, consider driving in the DE we will hold in conjunction with the race – I know I can’t wait! There will also be a Concours event at the track, including both street and race cars. You don’t want to miss this! Check out our website for all the details. If you are less interested in competitive driving, but still want to participate, then we have plenty of other events. There is a tour to Louisiana, a few Porsche Lunches, and a Happy Hour on the 16th at Cuidad in Dallas. So, come on out, and join the fun!

Happy 40th Anniversary, Slipstream! We’ve come a long way, haven’t we?

Because I Said So by Wendy Shoffit, Editor

T

here are some exciting things going on this month. James has already done a good job of reiterating them. If you have any questions, look at the calendar page and/or our webpage at www.pca.org/mav. The most interesting turn of events that has happened is that Maverick Region will be the host of the 2004 Porsche Parade. For those of you who might be new members or haven’t heard of it before, Parade is a week-long event for PCA members. It is held at a different location every year. Last year was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this year is in Boise, Idaho, and next year will be in Tampa, Florida. Roughly 1000 PCA members from all over the country (and other areas of the world) get together during this week to participate in a plethora of events. These include: a concours d’elegance, a TSD rally, an autocross, tech quizzes, an art show, tech sessions, golf tournament, a 5K/3K Run/Walk, an RC autocross, a kids autocross (with bikes, scooters, rollerblades, etc.), and so on. For areas like ours with a road course nearby, Parade is starting to include a Drivers’ Education event as well. As if that weren’t enough, all but 2 evenings during the week have banquet dinners, some casual and some formal, but always delicious! Maverick Region has hosted Parade before, in 1987 and helped again in 1997 for the one in San Antonio. We thought we would wait another few years to do 2007 (to make it an even

10 in between each time), but circumstances arose nationally that needed to be taken care of. So, we’ll be a couple of years “early” from what we originally expected. We don’t have a whole lot of details as of yet. A planning committee is surveying possible sites to serve as the host hotel. There is a huge list of criteria that needs to be met, including large enough banquet facilities, plenty of parking (including trailers) and hotel rooms, a large open outdoor area for the concours, and so on. There’s a lot to it. This is an incredible opportunity for our region to shine. We will be asking a lot of you Mavericks, including volunteers of all sorts. We will also be asking members of other regions to help out in their areas of expertise to put on the best show possible. This will be a lot of work, but there will be a lot of benefits. Besides, when else might you get to see Peter Porsche in his swim trunks? I look forward to this exciting event in 2004 and hope you will be, too! Oh, I almost forgot... who wants to be editor next year? I’m quite certain I will be heavily involved with Parade planning and implementing and honestly won’t have time to do Slipstream. So, I’m looking for a willing volunteer. I can offer on the job training and help next year. Contact me with any questions or to volunteer. I will be more than happy to talk to you about it! It’s a very rewarding job!

Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Secretary

A

pril’s meeting was called to order at 7 PM at the home of the Shoffits with a busy agenda and a full house of Maverick members for this meeting.

Top of the agenda was the official announcement that Maverick Region has been asked to present a bid on hosting the 49th Annual Porsche Parade in 2004. More information will be forthcoming as the details get hammered out. On a topic related to Parade, Maverick Region is looking for national award nominations for the 2002 Parade in Boise, Idaho. A few of the nominations include Public Service Award, Family of the Year Award and Enthusiast Award. If you would like to find out more information on how to make a nomination please contact any of the Maverick Board members. A motion was presented and passed for the region to purchase a radar gun for use at region sponsored Club Races. The equipment is required for monitoring vehicle speeds in the pits. Also, the upcoming May Club Race and DE registration is starting to fill-up, if you want to participate or volunteer checkout the Maverick Region web site for all the details. An important change in the May schedule is that the annual 8

May at Mayo’s has been moved to from May 11th to May 18th. Look for the ad in this months Slipstream. Tinker Edwards reported on the successful first Spring tour and reported that everyone had a good time. Also, there are several tours planned for 2002 so watch the Region calendar for upcoming events. Finally, the March AX school was a great success and everyone had a great time and the club made few dollars to help pay for future events. The next Maverick Region Board meeting will be on May 8 in Irving at the Shoffit’s.

Maverick Region PCA Board Meetings are held once a month. The meetings are open to all PCA members and your suggestions and opinions are welcome. And there’s free food!

Boxstermania by Keith Olcha

We attracted the attention of two Tech-Art equipped 996s with wheels, full bodywork, etc. who followed some people over. We had Eric Beebe visit us to shoot the breeze. Dennis Chamberlain even threatened to come, but got up too late. The best surprise, and the winner of the "best-looking" Boxster from my daughter and her two teenage friends was the Yellow car of none-other-than Tom (I finally bought the damn car) Snodgrass!

February 18 - We had, at one point- 9 Boxsters and 3 911s. It was fun. We did 5 brake flushes, 2 oil changes, and 1 trailer hitch install!! And lots of talking!

Darron Shaffer, a.k.a. “Mr. Car Tools”

. . . the freshest brake fluid on the planet . . .

Darron is now Mr. Car Tools (hand me that spanner, will 'ya...). Rocky Johnson has the freshest brake fluid on the planet right now.

Thanks, Porsche cars, and Dr. Wendelin Weideking for your Japanese consultants who told you how to make the new cars easy to service. Forget you, Dr. Weideking for your Forbe's Magazine comments about how racing is foolish and Ferrari is backed by Fiat- Ha-Hawe'll never race F1. Sorry Jeff Gordon lost the Daytona 500 for blocking (bang), but that's racing!

We covered brake pad replacement procedure, Brey-Krause roll-bars, Valentine-1 mountings. It was a ball.

Texas Hill Country Tour By Bill Coates

O

nce again if you only relegate your Porsche membership to Social Hours or Driving Events you miss a very enjoyable part of owning a Porsche. You don’t see many of the Porsche owners that go to the Driving Events and these are the ones who should not miss the tours. These tours are driven at an aggressive pace that would be enjoyable to those with the talents learned at Driving Events. I am going to try a Driving Event once Stuart’s is finished with my car (new paint and wide body work).

through a two-year cycle of being plentiful or scarce. We must have had the scarce year since no place had many flowers. We started to turn around right then and go home—NOT. From the Willow City Loop we drove the back roads to Comfort, Texas and our home away from home, the Haven River Inn. These people at Haven River Inn are like family to the Porsche Club. They know us and look forward to the visit. Most of us made our reservations last year when we where there and it was the same thing this year. Last year my best friend, Ted, saw my room and reserved it out from under me for this year. This caused a lot of fun this year. As soon as we arrived at the Haven River Inn everyone visited each other’s rooms to look at the color and set

The tour was what I expected from Ted Glover. Nobody likes driving through the countryside better than Ted does. He and Bonnie will take off on any given weekend and drive somewhere in Texas or the United States just to see the country and have the pleasure of driving. Of course when you have over 30 cars to choose from it can make a difference. But seriously, Ted really would rather drive to California for a Dentist meeting than take a plane and when he can he does just that. This makes Ted probably the foremost authority on Texas roads and roads of the great USA. We get the benefit of this knowledge with an extra benefit of knowing all the good Bed and Breakfast and eating stops; extra notice on eating stops, huh gang?

Keith Bird getting a little close to the local cattle. up. Doors where opened and we just wandered in and out of all the rooms. Then I started the stampede and made my reservation for next year and took Carl and Judith’s room on the reservation list. When this got out it was one after another running and scheduling rooms. We enjoyed heckling each other about getting the other one’s room. The Steves family out of San Antonio built the Haven River Inn in 1911 for a summer home. It stayed in the family until 1992 when Johnnie Merchant bought it to rework the home to use as a Missionary retreat. This is when the bathrooms where added to each sleeping area. In 1994 the house was changed to a Bed and Breakfast and the top floor of the hotel, which was an attic, was changed to have a small kitchen with two rooms. The house did have a large porch that went from the front of the house around three sides. This area is now enclosed and is where you check in.

Now we get to the trip. We left Friday, April 5th, from Hillsboro at 9:00 am to head south. This did make it easy for the Ft Worth group to meet up and take as little extra distance as needed to the starting point. We had fair weather for Friday while we traveled down to Kingsland Old Town Grill in Kingsland. This grill was in an old house that was moved after the filming of the movie “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The house was moved and joined other houses to form a small hotel. The setting was like an old railroad stop including a Depot and several old cabooses that were also used for rooms for your stay. We left from there on Texas back roads to the Willow City Loop. For those who do not know, the loop is through an area of open range that normally is covered with Blue Bonnets. Last year you could look into the valley and see a blue carpet. This year it had hardly any flowers because of the lack of rain. We also heard that sometimes Blue Bonnets go

There were not as many Blue Bonnets this year as last but telling people you are going on the tour to see the Blue Bonnets is like saying you are going to the Super Bowl to see the Cheer Leaders. We go first for the driving, second to see the country, and last and best to see old friends. Just like other events there are a group of Porsche owners who are always there.

This is probably the first time this store has seen so many Porsches! 10

The Haven River Inn provided the perfect central location.

. . . one hole for both sexes. . . Most of the group followed Carl to the car wash. Standard procedure for Carl to wash his Porsche after it accumulates the least amount of dust and wet road film. He is nearly as bad as Ted and me. Normally we would arrive and just have time to change then get in our cars to travel to some nice place to eat but this time Ted changed it. Ted had the Inn cater a meal of beef tenderloin, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, vegetable medley, Caesar salad, soup, and sherbet. It was nice to have time to settle in and relax before eating and then not have to get dressed to go eat. Don’t get excited we did dress to eat at the Inn; we’re not that close of a group. We began the morning with a good breakfast at the Inn and started driving. Now do you remember me mentioning that Ted also knew good eating-places? You better come on this trip hungry and not have a problem with sweets. First stop was a little bar-b-que place called Gravens Store. This is a small store at an intersection of two state roads that has some wicked bar-b-que and good beef jerky. Of course it is only 10:00 am but we had a sandwich and stood in line for the one hole. Really one hole for both sexes that had a water faucet about one foot off the ground out side the door to wash your hands and Ted supplied the paper towels. But you don’t stop there for the rest stop - only the eats. We then were back on the road headed for Utopia. Don’t misunderstand, utopia may be the experience of driving our Porsches, but it is also the name of a town. In Utopia we had lunch, 2 hours after the sandwich, then started towards Kerrville. Remember the eating. We again stopped in a small town of Medina at Love Creek Cider Mill and Gift Store. This place is known for making anything with apples. You name a dessert made with apples and it was there. Most had hot apple pie and ice cream while others enjoyed apple strudel and ice cream. We were back on the road to Kerrville to make a stop for the other half who put up with our Porsche toys. This was the James Avery Store so the women of the club could enjoy some shopping. Several nice things where bought and a lot of good will was established. From there it was back to Comfort and the Haven River Inn to change and rest up to make the trip to the German restaurant

in Waring. Good food again and fun talking about all the stops to eat. You will have to ask Tinker about getting pranked since it cannot be described in this article. Sunday was started by another good breakfast at the Inn and then followed by the return to Dallas and Ft Worth. We traveled back roads up through Burnet and had lunch on the way. Another great trip with fantastic people. Ted has several day trips planned and you Porsche owners need to take advantage of hiss knowledge of the Texas highways and eating stops. The next one on May 18th-19th is a two-day trip out to the Kissatchee National Forest in and around the Nacogdoches area. There will also be a short trip into Louisiana. See page 3 for details. The Inn has tables that are set up all along the old porch for eating. The outside porch was added at the same time to go around the front and one side. This was the meeting place for the club where we sat in rocking chairs and talked and laughed about the events of the day. The Inn sits on top of a hill with a creek on one side and a great view of the countryside on the other. I am not sure when the bat house was built but you can see it over the top of the trees behind the property. The railroad once ran through Comfort but was later moved. The old tracks that go through the countryside and through tunnels were dismantled for the metal and the old tunnel near the Inn is now a large home for bats. We did not make the trip to see the bats, but at dusk every day you can go out and see them leave. There was wild life on the property in the form of a small heard of deer that slept in the grass every night in front of the Inn.

There’s just something about a country store that draws people in.

Happy Hour At Sea Grill By April & Steven Dodd

S

ea Grill, hmmmm…..the name in and of itself seems innocent enough, But the word Sea brings to mind all sorts of scary thoughts for the Dodd Family. First, we have not had a vacation near any body of surfable salt water for at least four years. So we need to be by the sea. Second, we have not Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Dee Lersch, and Mark Gluck had the chance to eat good seafood in quite some time. I believe the last good seafood we sampled / inhaled was at Galveston at our favorite haunt, Gaido’s. Last, but not least, the sea contains salt, and makes things rust, so keep the non galvanized 914 away from the sea or anything that contains that word.

Ok the review of Sea Grill. The food that we had was nothing short of perfect. More importantly, the car showing was beautiful. I am not sure if the weather warmed up enough for everyone to put wax on within the last several weeks but the cars looked beautiful. This beautiful display appeared despite the three days of flooding that preceded the happy hour. The display was an impressive site to see for both long time happy hour attendees and newcomers alike. April and I met a few new folks and that is one of the best parts of these events. Peter Weyandt and I talked about strut replacement and how much we loved driving cars that are set up with stiff suspensions. April spent her time hanging out talking to just about everyone there. My nephew, Addison picked up warnings from ex drag racer turned road racer Brent Yager. The warnings included stories of his past street racing and how much more exciting it is to race on a real track. This was well-appreciated and great advice for a new driver who happens to drive a Porsche. He now plans to autocross and Time Trial, both of which are cheaper than speeding tickets. All hats off to Dennis for offering free tax advice and setting up a great happy hour.We had a great meal, sat by great friends (and our new neighbors Alan & Debbie) and were served by some of the best wait staff in North Dallas. We watched John Leto rev up and speed out of the parking lot with incredible acceleration. Who could ask for more?

On the upside of the word Sea, we asked our nephew and new Porschefile, Addison Rogers to join us at this month’s happy hour, his first ever, at the Sea Grill. He hates seafood but loves Porsches. He is not old enough to drink, but old enough to have a learner’s permit, own a very clean 85 Red 944, and old enough to drive Steven and April to happy hour. He was kind enough to help transport us down the short jaunt from Coppell to the Tollway. He bummed a free meal, (lamb chops) courtesy of Aunt April and Uncle Steve and got to speak with the entire usual happy hour group. He even got to purchase some goodie store stuff.

Mineral Wells Autocross School By Mike Bridges

Aubrey Sutton driving the family 911 to the limit. this point in my training. The most enjoyable exercise of the morning was the “oval” or “football” skidpad. There I learned how to properly spin my car! “Once you lose it, just put in the clutch and DON’T lock up the wheels.” Then I was given a goal of spinning my car out at least one time (Mitch demonstrated the proper spinning technique to me). As it turned out (no pun intended), I spun on the very first apex.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! What a blast for a 2-day “crash” course in Autocross and Time Trials. It all got started on a shaky note, as I found that my checkbook had managed to escape me and I didn’t have enough cash to pay for the school. No problem: a lady named Monda Degan loaned me $100! I was speechless (which is hard to accomplish)! She had no notion of who I was, other than a fellow student with a problem. When I asked her if she was OK loaning a virtual stranger that much money, her reply was “you’re with this group, don’t worry about it.” WOW, what a statement about the attitude of the PCA Mavs!

Then, after lunch from Subway, the instructors set up a full autocross course building on the segments we had practiced in the morning. I managed to improve my times every lap, and was beat by the end of the day.

Then a fellow student, Will, and I were paired up with Mitch Williams. Will has a late model Ford Cobra and I have a ’94 Camaro Z-28. Mitch said he was paired up with us because “they call me ‘TorqueMan’! <insert Tim Allen grunt sound here>

The Saturday autocross school started out with separate sessions on three slalom courses, two skid pads, and a braking course. I probably got five times as much seat time during Saturday morning as I had in the two autocross events I had participated in previously, and seat time is EVERYTHING at

Monda Degan driving the slalom like a pro. Sunday was the day I was REALLY looking forward to. Up until then my racing hadn’t gotten out of 2nd gear. Today would get MUCH faster. The morning exercises were basically two halves of the overall Time Trial course (#2, I think). One half was pretty technical, introducing decreasing and increasing radius turns, the Start/Finish line, flags, etc. The other half introduced a braking zone going into a hairpin turn. I had cooked my brake fluid pretty badly on Saturday, so I was a bit conservative (OK, timid) on this exercise, only getting it right once. But, WOW, what a rush! Flat out in 3rd, almost to the rev limiter, then on the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS, thinking “there’s no way I’m going to make this,” then off the brakes, down into 2nd, and through the hairpin. THIS is what performance cars are all about.

I only got one good picture of my car on course Sunday, when Mitch borrowed my Z to come up to speed on the track layout. He’s coming across the Start/Finish line in this one.

. . . spun on the very first apex. . . two days of outstanding training by some of the most dedicated, hard-working, and FUN people to be around, and you even get fed lunch both days!

Fixing Your Porsche Oil Leaks By Ted Glover

A

s everyone who owns a Porsche knows, they leak oil. This article will deal with one of the areas that is susceptible for leaving a Valdez-sized oil puddle under your car.

Being a dry sump system, the oil is scavenged from the bottom of the block and stored in an oil tank. The oil is then pumped back to the engine to function as a lubricant and a coolant. To get the oil from the heads back to the block it must pass through four oil return tubes located on the bottom side of the engine. These thin-walled metal tubes have large o-rings on each end to prevent leakage as the oil passes through them. This works well until heat, damage, and time takes its toll and they no longer function as they should. Then the leaks start.

. . . without grunting, swearing, and peeling the skin off your knuckles. . . Some evidence of failing o-rings will be oil drops on the ground under the engine, oil film on the underside of the engine, and the smell of burning oil as the engine and exhaust system gets hot. The cure is to remove these O-rings and replace them with new ones. Sounds so easy. However, the only way to get the O-rings out to replace them means having to remove the oil return tubes. There are two ways to remove these tubes. One way is fairly easy and inexpensive, while the other way can be time consuming and expensive. You either crush these tubes (they are thin-walled) and twist them out, or you can remove the engine and disassemble it. Crushing is a whole lot quicker. The removal and installation of oil tubes can be done with or without the exhaust system on the car. When I did mine (1977 Turbo), I removed the exhaust manifold on the right side of the car but left the exhaust manifold on the left side of the car. Access to the oil tubes will determine which way you will have to approach it.

Replacement tubes come in various designs, but to be able to install them on the assembled engine in the car, they need to be in two pieces. These two pieces fit/slide over each other so you can place the tube into the head and the block and slide the two pieces (make the tube longer) until the O-rings are in place and the tube secured. You then have a clip that keeps the tubes under tension and they cannot back out. Being an OEM type of guy, I decided to use genuine Porsche tubes to repair the leaks. Their design is the two-tube system, which you install by sliding the tubes out into the head and block. This system utilizes four O-rings. Two of the O-rings are small and fit between the two tubes to create the seal as the tubes are spread out, and two large O-rings, which fit into the head and block. There is then a circlip that fits into an indentation and prevents the tubes from sliding out. Sounds simple, but unless you are Arnold, you can forget about trying to do this with the engine in the car and limited access. I could barely pull these tubes apart when I held them in front of my chest with both hands firmly grasping them, never mind trying to do this with fingertips under the car. So, I resorted to the spring-loaded tubes. This system has a spring between the two tubes and creates pressure by resting on two lands and trying to push the two halves apart. You install this system by compressing the spring by pushing the two halves together (easy to do), placing the tube in its proper location and essentially releasing the spring and the two halves. It takes a little force to get the O-rings to seat in the head and the block, but installation of the tubes with this system takes only minutes. All without grunting, swearing, and peeling the skin off your knuckles. There are many Porsche suppliers who sell oil return tubes of various designs, but I got mine locally at Nine-Eleven Enterprises, a Slipstream advertiser. If anyone has any questions, please call me at 972-248-7751 or speak to me at one of the Maverick Region events.

Boxster Boulevard - The Leaf Catcher By Bob Bianconi

The Boxster Leaf Catcher Take a peak. The leaves are there… along with candy wrappers, cigarettes, pebbles, stones and anything else floating around on Texas highways. Where? Why, the two air intakes on the front bumper (or 3 on a “S” model). If it’s been a while since you peaked in the radiator air intakes (or maybe never…), you’ll be sure to find all manner of road debris. Surely all of this debris can’t be good for the cooling efficiency of your radiators, especially on a typical Texas 100˚ summer day. When it’s hot, you want the air flow to your radiators to be unimpeded so they can perform at their best.

T

his is the first installment of what we hope will be a regular column dedicated to the Maverick Boxster owner. We’ll be reporting on Boxster events like the February tour, Boxster tidbits and other useful information for the Boxster owner. This month, we’ll provide a spring cleaning tip intended to keep your Boxster running cool this summer.

Vacuum out the air intakes vacuumed up. Be careful to not hit the fins of the radiators. As a finishing touch, take your garden hose and rinse down the radiators, not too strong, not too weak. So there you have it; a simple trick to keeping your radiators operating at their best for the upcoming summer months. Save those paper towel rolls, you’ll be needing them.

So, maybe it’s time you spent a few minutes this spring performing a leaf-ectomy. It’s not hard once you know the trick. If you’ve taken a look at the openings, you’ve already noticed that the air intake grills are not removable (without removing the whole bumper cover). This makes access to the debris a bit more challenging.

I think you’ll find this spring cleaning tip also works on the Boxster’s big brother, the 996.

A simple vacuum cleaner will be the tool of choice albeit with a slight modification. Your standard vac attachments won’t work because of the intake grills; they are just too large to fit through the openings. But we can take care of that. Besides, your trusty vac, you’ll need 3 cardboard paper towel rolls; you know the kind, the cardboard roll that you throw away when you have used up the last paper towel. Here’s the trick: Insert one roll into the other and then flatten the first 2 such that they fit in between the lower set of louvers on the grill. Insert the end of the vacuum into roll three and turn it on. A flashlight helps you aim the end towards the far corner; that’s where you will find most of the debris. Leaves, wrappers, stones and pebbles will all get

Standards in the Cayenne By PCNA Modern technologies set standards in the Cayenne Porsche has pursued a new path and developed an off-road sport utility vehicle. Stuttgart. With the Cayenne model due to be launched in the fall of 2002, the Stuttgart-based automobile manufacturer Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG intends to set standards in the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) market segment. The new Porsche model with off-road capability is to be available in two versions, the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. It is a totally new design incorporating many impressive, pioneering technologies and not based on any previous model. Porsche has conceived the Cayenne as an extremely sporty vehicle capable of being driven off road when necessary. Its entire character, shaped at the company's research and development center in Weissach, reflects its close affinity with the Porsche sports cars that enjoy worldwide success. Among the many technical highlights to be found in the new design are totally new 4.5-liter, eight-cylinder engines. The Cayenne S is rated at 250 kW (340 bhp) and has a peak torque of 420 Nm; the Cayenne Turbo's engine develops 331 kW (450 bhp) and a torque of 620 Nm. Both these engines guarantee exceptional performance: for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h, the naturally aspirated Cayenne version needs 7.2 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 242 km/h. The Turbo version accelerates to 100 km/h from a standing start in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 266 km/h. Both Cayenne engines easily outperform the EU 4 exhaust emission limits that will be in force from 2005 on, and also all other regulations of this kind anywhere in the world. A six-speed Tiptronic S transmission is standard equipment on the Cayenne Turbo. Both Cayenne versions naturally have permanent all-wheel drive and the well-known Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system, which has been further developed to suit the specific needs of this type of vehicle. An inter-axle differential lock and additional low-range gears are evidence of the new Porsche's potential on loose surfaces. As well as offering the driver and up to four passengers sportscar standards of performance, agility, handling and braking, the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo feature the latest chassis and suspension design developments that yield standards of ride quality and refinement never before available in this vehicle category. The Cayenne also goes to the top of its class when it comes to towing a trailer, with the high load limit of 3,500 kilograms. The Cayenne's low engine hood and strikingly styled headlamps identify it immediately as a true Porsche. Both Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo combine elegance with an aura of power. The range-topping Cayenne Turbo has certain visual features that distinguish it from the naturally aspirated version: additional air inlets at the front, power domes on the engine hood and four exhaust tailpipes. The latter have a slight effect on the overall length: the Cayenne S is 4,782 millimeters long, its more powerful turbocharged counterpart 4,786 millimeters long. The width of 1,928 millimeters and the height of 1,699 millimeters are identical, and so is the wheelbase of 2,855 millimeters. 23
