Road Ramblings by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President

A

h, the month of May. School is ending for the kids, everything in the garden is green again and growing like mad, nice warm days and still-pleasant evenings. Oh yeah, and the most important stuff- the Indianapolis 500, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Memorial Day Weekend PCA club race at Texas Motor Speedway. May is also the launching point for the racing season in the northern US and in Europe. When I lived in the Midwest, I looked forward to our first Drivers Education in May at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. What a track! Four miles long shaded by the numerous large trees of the Kettle-Moraine Forest, with big elevation changes. Most professional race drivers say it is the finest road course in America for racing. It’s very similar, in my opinion, to one of the greatest race tracks in Europe, Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. Spa is nestled in the tranquil, wooded Ardennes Forest, hardly evoking today the memory of that area, the site of the brutal Battle of the Bulge of World War II. Let’s pray that the battlegrounds of today’s conflicts go back to more useful, peaceful ways in the future, and allow the bitter memories to subside over time for future generations as well. I received some responses to my list of favorite Porsches mentioning that I left out the first generation of water-cooled, front engine Porsches, the 924, 944 (and turbo), 968, and 928. Yes I did, not for any reason other than that there were too many good cars to choose from when forming my list. Personally, my favorites of those cars are the 1988 and 1989 944 Turbo S cars. They were faster and handled better than their 1988-1989 3.2 liter 911 siblings. Not a feature Porsche wanted publicized at the time.

an inexpensive chip-set change for the computer and boostcontrol, these cars make 300 bhp. The only thing you have to be careful of is where you are in a corner, and where the front wheels are pointed when full boost comes on- very much a surge that can break the rear wheels loose easily even in third gear. While these cars like all Porsches are expensive to repair and maintain, they can be bought for around $11,000-$16,000 today depending upon condition and are also great-looking machines. Okay, we’ve got a full calendar in May. Besides our Club Race and DE during the Memorial Day Weekend (Sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche- Thank you), we’ve got another track event put on by our pals at Hill Country Region- a Drivers Education at MotorSports Ranch (MSR) on May 17-18. Mavericks can sign up as you read this for what is always a great event at the best small race track I’ve ever driven. There is another DFW local area autocross at Pennington Field on May 4th, and our ever popular “May at Mayo’s” social on May 10th. This annual Saturday evening dinner social held at Mayo Performance (race and repair shop) in the Mid-Cities is always a blast. I’m planning on attending everything I’ve mentioned, but don’t forget our May 15th Happy Hour and our weekday lunches. I think I’ll be in town for that Thursday evening Happy Hour. Last month we had 65 people mix it up together with several new members attending. Now I’m excited. The mail came and there is another Harbor Freight Tool catalog in the pile. Yesterday there was one from Tweeks. I need to go out in the backyard and lie in the hammock, finding yet another tool I must have for the workshop or the track. Till next month…

The ’88 Turbo S, and 89 Turbo (the S was dropped but the specs were the same) had 250 bhp, big brakes from the 928, ABS, and heavy duty suspension with larger front hubs and carriers, and 50/50 weight distribution for excellent handling. There also was a European spec-racing series, the Rothman’s Turbo Cup that featured these cars in race trim, like the Cup series of today. I enjoy driving these cars today when I can bum a ride.

I had the pleasure of driving Rob Granger’s Red 1989 944 Turbo at a DE at Texas World Speedway a few months ago. With

Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor

A

nother month has gone by and I still haven’t made it to an Autocross or Time Trial! Maybe I shouldn’t say that I haven’t made it, I have, but not to drive. I have taken several pictures and tech inspected several cars, but having an entire day or weekend to spend driving has eluded me. I hope that you are not suffering from the same schedule overload that I am, you are getting out there and driving, right??!? I will be correcting this problem very soon... you’ll see my red 924S weaving in and out of cones at the next AX and TT, I promise. Once again, this issue is chock-full of good reading. The competitive driving season is now in full swing and many of you have also enjoyed the tours. There are several tours this year, some are one-day, some are 3-day, pick one that sounds like fun and go for it. Talk to anyone who has gone on a tour, they are a blast! We are lucky to have so many cool places to visit and fun roads to drive to get us there. The months of May and June have some very special events, our annual Club Race and Drivers Education at Texas Motor Speedway, 2003 Parade in Tampa, and our second MotorSport Ranch Drivers Education. Sign up for a DE soon, you don’t want to miss the fun of driving and learning on either great track!

Happy Hour at Saltgrass by Dennis Chamberlain

Amid the excitement, Kristi Kobell from Park Place rolled up in a new Cayenne, causing heads to turn (some of which were for the Cayenne). Meanwhile, a sideshow was happening at my table – Lisa Jue, who surely must be in training for a standup comedian role somewhere – proved to be all the entertainment I could handle. From my perspective, the Saltgrass seemed to be a hit. We’ll be returning in the future, but for the May 15 Happy Hour, we’re going to try a new place in Irving called Cafe Vienna. See you there!

Tom Tierney, Tom Widmer, and Kristi Kobell

An hour earlier, I had been concerned about whether we would have a decent turnout. Only a few of us had arrived, and after all, it was the first full day of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I thought that a lot of our members might want to stay home and watch the action on television – and I figured Jay Easley would be somewhere Jennifer and Debbie outside in the cold wind protesting or something -- but fifteen minutes later about forty members including Jay exploded onto the scene and all of a sudden I was worried about the ability of the Saltgrass to handle all of us. At the peak, we had sixty attendees, several of whom were either new or attending for their first time (including Ernie Swersky and his 928). Forty-five of Tinker and Jay us stayed for dinner.

t the Saltgrass, before we were quite ready to sit down and eat, Jennifer Lage stopped the waiter and ordered a 32 oz Porterhouse steak. I didn’t pay much attention because I thought she was kidding, but later, after she Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker had finished the steak and a dessert, Edwards, and Mark Gluck and as she quietly scanned the rest of the table for any leftovers, I realized this was no joke. And I felt that old familiar longing – to be young and thin again!

Straight Arrow Rally by Jack Wales Knuckles white on the wheel, tires squealing and with the Driver fighting to hold the car on course, the Navigator chants a litany of directions to the Driver. Okay, maybe since this was our first Rally event, perhaps, we were just a tad bit excited about it. We might also have had expectations from watching events on the television that didn't quite apply.

How to decide the placement? Mileage? Time? Well this was not a Time/Distance event, so maybe that wasn't the best way to do it! Then Mark had a moment of insight! Ahah, that entry misspelled a word! Great they are in third, OOh that one had extra punctuation! Great, now its easier to put them in the order!

Meeting at Cozymel's for a bit of lunch before the event, we listened to the event coordinators, Teri Davis and Mark Gluck, give a short class on how to do a road rally. Since out of the seven cars in the event, six of them had never run a rally before, this was most informative.

After the plaques for placement were passed out, everyone went outside and chatted for a bit. I know Darron and I both decided this was an event that we would like to do again. It seems ALL of the Novice teams decided this was something that they could get in to and pestered those in charge to let them know when the next Rally was to be. All in all, perfect weather, good driving, lovely scenery, and a bit of fun with the instructions made for an event that all who participated will have fond memories of for quite some time!

After covering what the general road rules were, and how to use the Numbered Route Instructions, they led us all outside to give us the pages of Numbered Route Instructions. From looking around at the blank looks on other navigators faces, and having the feeling that same look was on mine, I was suddenly worried about even finishing the event, much less sticking to the instructions for more than a few minutes. I leaned over to one of the other navigators and ask him if he understood the second instruction, he look back at me and whispered, "I haven't gotten that far yet!" As we lined up ready to depart the parking lot, a local Grapevine police officer pulled past, quickly circled into the parking and and sat, staring at a line of Porsches. I wondered if there were dollar signs in his eyes as one by one the cars rolled out of the parking lot, proceeding to follow the directions on the list.

Away we went, I gave the turn instruction to Darron Shaffer, being careful to keep a lookout for the answers to the questions we would need to fill out, reading ahead a couple of instructions trying to figure out what to tell him -- ok is that next stop light the one we need to turn left at? Or is it the one half a block further? One would be the correct way, the other would lead us into a wild goose chase.

I would like to thank the organizers Teri Davis and Mark Gluck, and the course designer, Carey Spreen.

Rally participants showing off their hard-earned awards After only a few turns, we both realized the instructions were really quite clear, but only when you came to the point you need to use them. Okay maybe it was the top down driving through a beautiful day, the flowers just starting to bloom, the amazingly clear instructions that had at first seemed so arcane and confusing, but this turned into a most amazing drive the the countryside. Only at one point did we have a problem, and that was in noticing the goats on top of some guy's house, we almost missed a turn in the route. Not sure if that was what the people that laid the course out intended, but it worked well. Other than that, it was quite a fun drive, following the instructions, looking at the scenery, looking for the answers to questions, watching for the signs we needed to keep track of, writing down all the cities we passed through and their populations, okay and did I mention watching the very pretty countryside? Oh yeah and Darron watched the road! We all found the ending point, filled out the sheets, turned them in and waited for the results. Seemed like a very long time, only to hear Teri Davis muttering to herself that she had never had this many all correct answers. 11

Davey Dogwood: The Maverick Tour Season Begins by Bob Bianconi

I

t seems Ted and Bonnie are ‘branching’ out this year. The first Maverick tour of the season started on a Sunday with an all day romp through the roads of east Texas. The idea, of course, was to catch the dogwoods in bloom, particularly in the area surrounding Palestine.

at Giovanni’s in Palestine. From there it was back behind the wheel in search of the elusive dogwood. And yes, there were dogwoods and some wonderfully purple trees too (well if this were Arbor World instead of Slipstream, I guess I’d have a name for ‘em). Perhaps the highlight of the dogwood bloom was our visit to the Davey Dogwood Park just north of Palestine. Situated on 200 acres,

The now infamous “Walmart” was our starting root, er, point. With nearly 40 cars and 70-some Maverick members, this tour was a success before it even began. Lots of new Mav’s showed up, some with only a month or two since joining (great!). For other seasoned Maverick’s, it was their first tour. By late morning the temperature was pushing the low seventies and the cab’s and targas had lost their cover in favor of topdown driving.

...if this were Arbor World instead of Slipstream... the park is known for acre’s of white dogwoods. Once in the park, the caravan twisted it’s way through what seemed like miles of one-lane roads lined by dogwoods (and them purple things again). It was an amazing place. So the season begins and I’ll bet many of us are looking forward to the next trip.

But begin it did and the caravan wound it’s way east on the now famous Glover roads. Dual lane country roads, one lane back roads and an occasional sprint on a connecting highway, as usual, the Porsches experienced it all. It was Italian for lunch

Boxster Boulevard by Bob Bianconi Boxster Owners Bane: The Dead Battery It’s Midnight, you turn the ignition key on your Boxster and the battery is dead. What next? Hot shot the battery from another car? Sounds good, but how do you get to the battery? A simple question and usually a simple answer: pop the hood. Well, it’s not that simple on a Boxster with a dead battery. What you’ll find is

Remember: Plugging the cable in is not good enough, you have to remember to turn the key! The cable is cheap insurance – less than $15 at most auto supply stores. So where should you keep the battery charging cable? Under the front hood? Not unless you want to walk home. Keep it in the passenger compartment. You’ll be glad you have it at Midnight.

. . . it’s not so simple on a Boxster with a dead battery . . .

To open the hood, you may follow the instructions found in the owner’s manual (you do have the manual with you right?): this can be tricky depending on your model year. The 1997-2000 model years listed some oblique instructions. From 2001-on, Porsche provided a terminal in the fuse box for connecting a battery charging cable. Look inside the fuse box (by your left knee) for a small booklet with instructions. A more simple method is to carry one of the battery charging cables with cigarette lighter plugs at each end. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for using this cable – usually the small end at the car with the good battery, the fat end plugged into your Boxster. This method won’t start your car but it will provide enough juice for you to cycle the alarm system so you can open the hood.

that the hood is locked and the hood switch by the driver’s seat (lever on a pre-01) will not unlock the hood. This is a function of the alarm system.

• Increased Horsepower • Lower Temperatures • Superior Protection • Longer Oil Life • API Certified

An example of a cigarette lighter battery charger 1. Plug the cable into both cigarette lighter receptacles (again follow the instructions) 2. Put the key in the door lock and turn. You should be able to hear the alarm cycle off and on. When in the off position, press the hood switch (or on pre-01 models, lift the hood lever) 3. Your hood should now open using the lever under the front edge of the hood.

Mavericks at TWS Club Race By Keith Olcha

E

TWS was closed down in the late 1980s as a professional commercial racetrack but has thrived with almost 50 weekends per year and several mid-week dates as a club track with SCCA, PCA, and several other clubs running driving events and race weekends. It is rarely used as a banked oval anymore. The club race format used by LSR at TWS is practice on Friday until the afternoon, then practice race-starts followed by a fun-race of 5-7 laps. The field was divided into two major run groups, the red group and the green group. Each group had about 36-40 cars with several separate classes of cars within each of the two large groups. The green group ran E-K stock, plus GT4 and GT5, the red group ran GT1-GT3, GT, C, and B-D stock. Saturday was qualifying and two separate sprint races for each group, while Sunday was reserved for qualifying and a 90 minute Enduro, with a mandatory 5 minute pit-stop and optional refueling. While club racing has been growing in popularity nationally over the last few years, this year was the biggest appearance by Mavericks at TWS, and the most chance for several first-in-class, as well as overall group (red, green) wins by Mavericks. In addition to a large number of Mavericks

very March for the last seven years, the Lone Star Region has held its annual Club Race. This year, as in the last few, there was also an endurance race, in addition to the sprint races. Just to give you a little background on the venue and the format of club racing, Texas World Speedway is located in College Station and is a 3-1/2 hour drive from the DFW Metroplex. The course itself is a 2.9 mile road course constructed by using the main straight from the 2 -1/2 mile NASCAR oval integrated with a twisty challenging road circuit complete with elevation changes and a couple of limited- visibility turns.

Wayne Brown first into a very crowded infield corner. returning to TWS, there were a large number of rookies who were using TWS as their first race, or their second after getting their rookie licenses at Hallett last October.First-time Maverick racers included Steve Patti,David Baker, Steve Watkins and Brian Amond. Rookies included Jorge Vargas and Doug Molny. Returning Mavericks included Lee Wilkins, Bryan Henderson, Wayne Brown, Wade Kolody, Hamp Williams, Carl Amond, Jim Collier, Jim Buckley, Joe McGlohen, John Souzelka, Glen Gatlin, Ed Cullen, Ned Cullen, Barry Moore, and Yours Truly. Add the Hill-Country group that many of you know from our MotorSports Ranch and Texas Motor Speedway events, and our Oklahoma pals (including Wally Ruiz

and Brooke Van Horn) and it was clear our gang and our buddies were a major influence on the attendance as well as the outcome of various races.

The Sunday enduro included a first: three zone 5 region-presidents, and their zone-5 representative all driving against one another- Brooke Van Horn zone 5 rep from Oklahoma,Stan Wenger President of Lone Star Region, West Dillard President of Hill Country Region, and me from Maverick. With my superb pit crew of Joe McGlohen,Lee Wilkins, and Pat Benson, plus a boost problem with Brooke’s car I squeaked to the finish line ahead of them all. As they say… that’s racing!

There were also a host of Mavericks volunteering in timing and scoring, grid, safety, and working corner stations. The weather was great Friday, but rain on Saturday created some interesting grids for the sprint races based on qualifying in the wet. The weather was perfect again on Sunday for the enduro. Mavericks did very well, with Lee Wilkins and David Baker placing first and second overall in the green group Enduro and each winning their respective classes. Jim Buckley and Joe McGlohen won their Saturday sprint races, and Doug Molny won the Sunday enduro

in G stock after a strong start against Jorge Vargas and Jim Buckley and others retired with mechanical problems.Glen Gatlin and Jim Collier each won races in C-stock as well, with Glen winning the enduro. Rookie Steve Watkins tore up the very competitive F-stock class with a great showing and a first-in-class. Wayne Brown unfortunately suffered mechanical problems throughout the weekend, and did not place as high as usual throughout the weekend. However, he and Carl Amond both set the fastest lap times of any Mavericks entered – low 1minute 52 –second lap times. Similar times from vastly differing cars. Autocross #1 and Time Trial #1 by Bob Lewis there are the rest of us just trying to improve on our times. It’s really fun to watch from a corner and hear the times as each driver tries again to better his/her time. On AX day Mark had the lowest time by about 2 seconds over the Yellow BMW.

H

aving recently driven in the Autocross 102 and Time Trial 103 schools, I was ready to drive an actual Autocross (AX) and Time Trial (TT). I had my opportunity at the first such events of the season for the Maverick Region. When I arrived on Saturday for the Time Trial, I noticed that the layout was the same as I had run at the Time Trial 103 School, so I had some familiarity with the preferred line. I also had plenty of time to consider what I wanted to do differently from when I was in the school. One thing was that not spinning my car previously meant I could drive faster or take a more aggressive line. I started off in third gear as I did at the school; my times were down 4 seconds to 78.02. This seemed like a good improvement for me. In the afternoon I reduced the time 2 more seconds. I now wanted to start shifting gears. I was approaching the hard right turn after a long sweeper right at 100 MPH. Hard on the brakes then turn. The blood rushed to my head, as the G forces were more than I am accustomed to. This car really has a higher level of braking than I expected from a street car.

Sunday, March 30 was the day for the AX. A new course was implemented on Saturday after the TT. All the participants walk the course and plan their strategy before the runs begin. Again began the runs in third gear only to learn the course. My first run was at 108 sec. Mark said

...This is the consistency for which you strive... that it was a good first run since I did not DNF. I brought the times down as the day progressed by learning what I could do. I did spin once with Mark in the car. The car hadn’t yet stopped and he was saying, “You know what you did wrong don’t you”. I was still realizing that the spin didn’t even take me out of the driving line. That is, I did not DNF.

As a form of personal pride, some of the veteran drivers look at each other’s times and try to be lowest for the day. A newcomer to the Maverick Time Trials driving a Yellow BMW M3 with a considerable number of suspension modifications had the low time. Mark Steele was about 1 sec behind in his modified 993 C2. Mark’s wife, Lisa, was only about two seconds more. I think good driving runs in the family or the car is really well setup for the Mineral Ring. Some of the 914 drivers watch the other 914 drivers’ skills, driving technique, and times. Then

Everyone is attentive at the drivers meeting Photo by Wendy Shoffit

I think what I did was enter the corner with too much speed and compounded the problem with turning the wheel. This was unsettling the chassis during the corner. This is a no no. Mark taught me a technique on the skid pad; he had me over steer and push the front end around the circle with the throttle. I did it once pretty well but this skill needs more practice from me. I ran two consecutive runs at 100.2. This is the consistency for which you strive. I started shifting gears late in the day without much to do. However, after the scheduled runs I ran some “fun” runs. I spun the car again but at a different point. Here again I cranked in more turn during a tight turn that unsettled the chassis. As before, I felt the rear end coming around. The last run was at 98.9 sec. I had lowered my time almost 10 seconds from the first lap. I was really pumped. I was making progress and learning the “feel” of the chassis. I can hardly wait for the next driving event. Since I have now experienced several driving schools and a DE, I know I have progressed as a driver. My goal at the next DE is to solo and move to the Blue Group. I hope you will consider some of these driving events yourself, you will learn more about the capabilities of your car. You will have more confidence in every day driving, and these Maverick Region events are fun! 20

Hill Country Tour by Dee Lersch

I

f possible, the Spring Hill Country Tour gets better each year. More than 30 Mavericks and 20 cars gridded up at the Hillsboro Country Courthouse on Friday morning, April 11, for another of Ted and Bonnie Glover’s enthralling tours. We had perfect driving conditions all weekend: cool and sunny weather, glorious back roads and, for the most part, little traffic. At the suggestion of Bobby Briggs, we also implemented a practice of numbering cars at each start and using those numbers in our radio communications. As a result we covered a lot of ground in record time with dozens of thrilling runs and no off-road incidence.

From Hillsboro we headed southwest over the first of a series of SixFlags-quality roller coaster roads to Gatesville and Llano. “Eating BBQ at Coopers BBQ in Llano” is the third item on Texas Monthly magazine’s 2001 list of “50 Things All Texans’ Should Do” so we stopped and did our duty. Coopers was also voted by Texas Highways magazine readers as “#1 Texas BBQ Joint”.

After lunch, we rolled south to Xanadu (aka the Willow City Loop). The Willow City Loop is the most beautiful wildflower trail in Texas, voted by me. Millions of bluebonnets mass along the canyon bottoms and then march into a half mile wide river of flowers that meander through the valley. Did you know that bluebonnets have a fragrance? I didn’t! No book, friend or tour had ever hinted of the sweetness of their

. . . 50 Things All Texans’ Should Do . . . perfume. Bluebonnets scented the warm humid air with a delicate blend of lilac and freesias. I had spent the morning identifying flowers along the roadside (bluebonnets, paintbrush, coreopsis, primroses, wild mustard, and at least four different daisies). On the Loop I found white prickly poppies, purple wine cups, lilac prairie verbena, and three rare Cherokee roses crowning an old barbed wire and cedar fence.

Perfect planners, Ted and Bonnie had recognized that some of us would have difficulty leaving this fairyland so we were offered different route opportunities for rest of the afternoon. Dinner would be at the Haven River Inn in Comfort. Some lingered taking pictures. Others cruised over to charming Fredricksburg to visit antique shops, wine tasting rooms, and brew pubs. Some drove on into the Haven River Inn with its hummingbirds and inviting rockers on those wide verandas that overlook the Guadeloupe River.

Saturday Famous Cooper’s Pit Bar-B-Que

Saturday’s destination was The Alamo…no, not the San Antonio Alamo, but the Alamo that John Wayne built in 1957-58 near

We had a long way to go: we were less than 25 miles from the Mexican border and more than 180 miles away from Comfort. Our luck held and we had more excellent runs up 334 and 337. We stopped in Medina at the Lone Creek Orchards, cider mill and country store to savor their cider, wolf their pastries and devour their apple ice cream. (Hey! We hadn’t eaten in more than two hours!)

Brackettville in which to film the movie of the same name. As part of our journey into the past we took our morning bio-break at Gravens Store, a regional center for hunters that is too colorful for words. The BBQ sandwiches are man-size, the beef jerky portable, and the bathroom unisex but during our wait we were entertained by a male peacock in full breeding plumage so vivid he seemed to glitter in the morning sun.

The cow pauses from his busy day to pose for a portrait

True Texas Beauty

The roads and runs were so perfect the morning seemed to script and direct triple digit speeds. Just outside Rocksprings, Bonnie Glover good-naturedly allowed a few drivers who longed for an even faster forward motion to scout out our next filming and eating locale: The Alamo.

We had a late dinner at Joe’s Jefferson Street Café in Kerrville where the seafood was fresh, the conversation rollicking, and Tinker Edwards came up with a computer to showcase a few of the digital photos shot during the day. As days go, it was pretty OK. <g>

Bill “Bear Bait” Coates lead the charge, an action that was particularly heroic since Bill was flying sans radar detector. The Edwards County Sheriff who ticketed Bill remarked that Bill was the most cheerful driver he’d ever clocked doing 30 mph over the speed limit. Bill later confided to us that his cheer was the result of his own wise decision just moments before he was clocked to slow down from twice the legal speed limit.

Sunday brought us more wild flowers (and a few feral iris from old ranch houses) and more triple digit runs and more roller coasters around Park Road 4. We checked out Luckenbach: Waylon was there in spirit. (Willie and the gang had been riding bikes around Fredricksberg all weekend.)

Sunday

After lunch a couple of Mavericks developed car trouble. The first car we repaired with a tie wrap to hold the belt switch in place but, when a second car lost its accelerator cable, good shepherds Ted and Bonnie, Bill Coates, Mike Oakes and Tinker Edwards shooed the rest of us safely home while they remained with our grounded flyers.

As we drove north we saw a dozen cars stopped on the shoulder of 35E, their occupants roaming in the bluebonnets, snapping pictures. “I bet they think they are on a drive in the country to see wildflowers,” I thought. If they only knew. The next tour is around Jefferson on June 7 and 8. We hope you will be there.

Happy Shahan’s Alamo Village is a monument to farsighted Brackettville businessman Happy Shahan and his wife, Virginia, who were the first to bring the film industry, and it’s economic benefits, to Texas. Historical interpreter, Rich Curilla, eloquently told their story and more of the film stars and directors who had filmed there. (Rich also arrested Bill Coates and put him in jail, BUT, that was such a good story, we forgave him.) Happy Shahan’s widow, Virginia, welcomed us to her village and led us inside the Alamo to pose for a dramatic group photo. At 87, Mrs. Shahan seems like a very glamorous younger sister of Cowgirl Hall of Fame-er, Hattie Stillwell. With great difficulty Ted rounded us up and headed us north again.
