My Thoughts

Y

a know, you just rock along every day, doing the things you do thinking folks are generally happy and everything is ok. Then you find out, six months later, that someone was not only happy, they were so impressed with one of our events that they wrote about their experience in their home newsletter and plan to adopt some of our practices into their own programs. Wow. Seems last fall Toby Duckett from Chicago was visiting a friend here in Texas and they attended one of our MSR DE’s. Toby’s experience, well the whole 2800 mile round trip, was so invigorating that he wrote about it in Chicago’s monthly newsletter “Chicago Scene,” expressing a nice Thank You to Maverick Region for the grand time he had at MSR. He had a list of things that our DE’s do on a regular basis that they may incorporate into their DE events, including: on-line registration, run groups and teams with team leaders, filled registration packets. Way to go Bill Dawson and your 2006 DE Team! You just got a Chicago size pat on the back. Caren Cooper, our gorgeous new Zone Rep, hosted a Zone 5 Presidents and Editors meeting in March. A representative from nearly every region was present, just the farthest south (New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Corpus Christi) were not able to come. PCA’s National Executive Secretary, Vu Nguyen, was here and

enthralled us for the entire morning (really!) with what’s happening in the National office, insurance procedures and tales of the ’72 914 which he was picking up the next morning in Tulsa to drive back to Virginia. Vu has brought a ton of energy and marvelous management skills to the job so if you have any problem or question or just want to chat with a really fun guy, feel free to call or email PCA’s National office. Vu will help you with what you need and you’ll feel like you’ve made a wonderful new friend.

Please help us to keep growing! 4

Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President

A

lot of people seemed to appreciate the article I wrote last month and told me so – thanks for all the kind words, and it is good to know someone besides Wendy reads my articles! Our Concours program is just going like gangbusters. By the time you get this, we will have probably already had our May at Mayos Concours – and as of right now, 23 cars are signed up. That is just incredible! Now I just hope it didn’t rain us out. A bit about Slipstream being late – we are in a difficult position with that. Back a few years ago, Slipstream worked like this : 1) The editor would finish Slipstream, drive it to Ussery, they would process it and print it (takes 2-5 days depending on their workload). 2) The printed copies would then be brought to my house. 3) Andy Mears would print a set of labels based on our membership database, subscribers, advertisers, and sponsors. 4) We would call a group of 5-7 people to come over as quick as they could, and spend an evening applying labels to all 1200 Slipstreams. We would then bag them according to zip code, label the bags appropriately, and put them in my car. 5) Andy would fill out all the paperwork the post office needed, and often Bob Knight would have to write a check for postage. 6) The next morning I would take off from work and drive them over to the post office in Fort Worth and manually bring the bags inside to be processed, usually standing in line as one often does at a post office.

The second thing we have discussed is moving up the deadlines and production dates. The problem with this is we are creating ads for events that are 3 months out, and reporting on events two months ago. So you would read about the Holiday Party in the February issue and Mark Gluck would have to create ads for the May at Mayo’s Concours in March. Often we don’t work out the details soon enough to be able to produce ads, and reporting on events that far behind just doesn’t suit our small-club feel we enjoy so much. If we were a big corporation, that is probably how it would be done, but we don’t want to revert to that unless we have to. We have no paid positions – we are all just volunteers, so have to do what we can to not run volunteers off. Of course the PRIMARY reason Slipstream arrives late is because I am always the last one to turn in my article! I think Rocky and Keith know what I am talking about! Come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

This was a great process as far as expediency is concerned. They were able to get to you much quicker. The problem is one of sustainability. When it wasn’t me doing the driving and delivering and labeling, it would be Tinker or Jan or Wendy or someone else. Finding volunteers to continually make that level of sacrifice is challenging to say the least. It is hard enough to get an Editor, for Pete’s sake! (thanks again, Jan!) So we decided to hire that process out. Now Slipstream gets printed and Ussery Printing delivers them to Tri-Win, who handles all the label creation, labeling, bagging, and delivering to the Dallas post office (rather than Fort Worth). So this takes a few days for them to handle that rather than the usual 24 hours it took us. Add to that the fact that the Dallas post office seems to be busier, and it sometimes takes a week or more to get the issue all the way to my house in Irving. So what can we do about it ? The first thing we are going to try is having Tri-Win deliver the Slipstreams to the Fort Worth post office. It seems like we had much better delivery times – which could shave a week off of the receipt date – when we used them. The Fort Worth office could be as busy as the Dallas office is now, so we don’t know if that will work or not. All we can do is try.

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis

I

n attendance: Jan Mayo, Christy Dominick, Denny Payne, Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, Travis Howard, Robyn Howard, Bill Miller, Dennis Chamberlain, Joe McGlohen, James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Bob Kuykendall, Mark Gluck, Bryan Bell, and Bob Bianconi. At about 6:55 PM, Bob Bianconi ran in and (between deep breaths) said he had 9 people signed up for the pending Concours at May @ Mayo’s. He then told us a story about car keys and UPS. You had to be there. Bob left as quickly as he came. James called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. He inquired about sponsorship for the upcoming club race. Joe reported that Keith had asked him to work with Boardwalk regarding the details of their sponsorship. James, trying to help Bob B out with the Concours, asked for a list of previous (old) Concours entrants (from the era when we had Concours events). We came up with a few names. James asked who delivers Slipstream to our dealers? He also asked if it might be a good idea to schedule a Tour to a Tech Session? James announced that National has a new requirement whereby both the President and Vice-President must approve a newsletter prior to printing. We discussed this a bit and concluded it might make finding candidates for Pres/V-Pres difficult, but would solve the problem of finding an Editor. Dennis and Bob will schedule with the accountant to do the 2006 audit after 4-15-2007. Dennis reported that the latest Happy Hour was good and gave us a quick rundown of the pending ones. He told a story about sharing food with Tink. The moral of this story was not to. You had to be there. Bob K allowed as how we have money. He asked board members to let him know in advance about fixed expenses. He reported that Joe/Keith got the storage unit paid up recently. Mark reported that now we have insurance coverage for officers and chairs of the Region. Joe reported that he was representing the DE Chairmen. He went on to request five radios, one gang charger (for six radios), two storage boxes, and some number boards (that won’t melt or dissolve). The board approved $3000 for these purchases. Bill said we are having a Club Race and that 12 people have signed up so far. He said Boardwalk paid for printing the Club Race flyers. Thank you Boardwalk! James interrupted: He forgot something… Chris Alvarado from Austin may try to organize a Zone-5 Charity Autocross to coincide with our last event of the year at TMS. Bryan reported that AX #1 had 57 ? entrants, TT #1 had 25 entrants, and AX #2 had 35 entrants. We discussed why the last two were small…concluded it was bogus weather reports. Bryan noted that he had not received insurance certificates for the last two events. Mark will check on this. Robyn “Takin’ Up Space” Howard passed. 8

Travis had several questions about our AXes. He noted that AX #2 stopped early and wondered why. Bryan and Charlie explained that we either do fun runs or have an AX Challenge after official runs. There were several people who came from out-of-town (Houston, Austin, Colorado Springs, and Florence, which is S of Ft. Hood) and wanted to get an early start home. When these people left, there were not enough people left to do much! We briefly discussed our new classification system. Until we know what classes all the cars are in, James can’t produce results. Travis also inquired about the $170 DE fee (he likes it), but was told it only applies to the DE at the Club Race. Dennis then took Travis outside and shot him [joke]. His picture will appear in his box in the May Slipstream. Teri reported that the last Rally made $40.00. Bob K injected that Rallies have the highest net profitability of all events. Charlie noted (not a complaint) that Darron had problems with his new TimeTrial timing software. We need to be patient as he debugs it. Denny will try to reconfigure the website so that it plays to mobile devices. Stay tuned… Christy said that PayPal was working great. She continues to add products and features to the Goodie Store portion of our web site. She reported there was not much traffic yet. We discussed some ideas for getting more Goodie Store traffic, such as creating a flier for Club Race entrants. Teri asked if the Goodie Store wanted to handle our special T-shirts for the San Diego Parade? She will send .CDR files to Christy. Jan reported that she had two articles about Rally and one article about TimeTrial #1 and Autocross #2 in the pipeline. She needs more articles, though. Bryan Bell has agreed to do a series of articles about Autocrossing. Wendy reported that the tardy Slipstreams are not Jan’s fault. The problem is with the Dallas Post Office. She suggested and the board concurred that we need to move back to the Ft. Worth PO. We believe this will cost us about $50. James interrupted again. National is starting a new e-mail service with which we can send messages to groups of members. Individual members can opt out if they do not want to receive these communications. It will use the national database and be available for use within a couple of months. It will work similarly to Constant Contact. Wendy continued by giving the Webmaster a heads up that Keith will have some Club Race info put together soon. She inquired whether we want to add an option to our clubregistration.net page to donate to our charity. We decided yes. Wendy reminded us that Jan is the National Awards Chair, and while discussing National Awards, she nominated Tracey and Ed Gross for Family of the Year. The Board thought that was a good idea. Prior to adjourning at 8:30 PM, James inquired where the cookies were? They were last seen in Dennis’s vicinity, but he left early. You had to be there!

Premier Wine Tasing by Trish Moncus

E

very now and then, you stumble across an event that sounds too good to be true and this event had our names written all over it- we love wine, it was 5 minutes from the house, and it was with car people. So we were there. Not to make it sound like we drink wine for a living (I wish), but we’ve been to a lot of wine tastings ,we’ve vacationed visiting vineyard so we know that they can run the gamut from pretentious to wonderful and this event fell into the latter category as it was really enjoyable. Photo by Lisa Steele

First, you have to love an instructor that includes a Margarita wine in the line-up. James of Premier Wines was

One of many lovely toasts of the evening even had one blue wine. Everyone was hard pressed to find something that they didn’t like.

I would encourage anyone who is interested learning more about wine to attend future events as it’s a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere shared with friends.

my kind of wine guy. He appreciates that everyone has different tastes, different budgets and different reasons for buying, drinking and gifting wine. If you were new to wine tasting, this was a great start as James was unpretentious, he was informative and he was fun, which is what it should be. Tracey did a fantastic job of starting us off with a good

Joel and Erika Nannis comparing the wines to their own vintage selection from Macaroni Grill, complimented with a nice Italian red, (when we could get the bottle away from Joel Nannis) and then we got down to serious tasting. We had bubbly wine, sweet wine, white wine, red wines and yes, we 13

My First Rally Ethan Bradley - Age 11

M

y first rally began at the Flower Mound Animal Adoption Center. My dad went as the driver with me as the navigator. At the beginning of the rally we had to read a form with all the rules on it. The cars that participated were 2 Boxsters that were red and white, one green 911, one orange 914, and one Volvo.

The main point of the rally was to time yourselves between certain points on a course throughout the countryside. After the first lap we returned to our starting point and wrote down how long it took us. Next, we started the second lap. We tried to match the time from our first lap while driving through the same course. However, the second lap included the search for

tie-breakers. For example, one clue was “Tezmeral also sold _ .” The blank was German Shepards. It was so painful to drive below the speed limit, because my dad and I were ahead of our first lap’s time and needed to slow down! One of my favorite things was driving with the top down, so I could feel the wind blowing through my hair on such a beautiful, sunny day! After the rally the group went to Friday’s where we had a snack. Also, 1st ,2nd, and3rd places were awarded (my dad and I almost got third). Meeting new people was another of my favorite parts of the day. MY MOST FAVORITE PART OF THE DAY WAS SPENDING TIME WITH MY DAD DOING WHAT WE LOVE DOING!!!!!!!!

he weather was cool and Spring was in the air in Flower Mound, Texas as Teri and Charlie hosted a fun filled Sunday afternoon rally. The rally type was known as a Regularity Rally. At my age, I thought this was something that I might need. On further explanation, I discovered that this form of rally is the comparison of two identical rally routes run with as close to the same time as possible. The instructions were straight forward and the scenery was filled with beautiful estates, winding roads and thoroughbred horse stables. There were 5 competing teams and awards for 1st thru 3rd place. Bobbie and I came in 5th only because there were just 5 cars. We navigated the route just fine, but our times were not close enough to bring home the gold or silver or bronze. I think I’ll blame it on Sunday being the first day of daylight savings time or something. Coming in 4th place was the team of Richard Bradley and his son Ethan in their beautiful red Boxter. Watch for an article by Ethan from the navigator’s point of view. He is a very mature young man and I am anxious to read his report of the day. 3rd place went to Mark and Catherine LaCroix who joined us in their Volvo. Mark and Catherine were guests who recently became members of SCCA and reside in Grapevine. Their time differential was only about 30 seconds from their first and second 14

run. You can tell times were close for there only to be a 30 second difference for 3rd place. 2nd place went to Jan Mayo and Kevin Davis in Jan’s white Boxter with a differential of only 25 seconds. The gold went to Betty and Clay Perine driving a beautiful 914. Their differential was 10 seconds. I guess they adapted to daylight savings time much better than I. After the rally we gathered at TGI Friday’s for dinner, dessert and the awards ceremony. While I came in last place, I got to spend a wonderful afternoon driving my Porsche with my wife by my side and new acquaintances in front of me and behind. With that kind of atmosphere, who minds whether they came in 5th or 10th. Thanks again to Teri and Charlie for hosting a fun afternoon. Our clocks are now synchronized—Teri, when is the next rally?

Pivot Cones Galore! by Wendy Shoffit

A

s the beginning of each autocross season gets nearer, I get a sense of trepidation. I haven’t driven our race car (a 1978 911 SC) in several months… What if I forget how to autocross?... What if I embarrass myself?... What if the car breaks or the tires completely cord?... Even though I’ve done this since 1998, I still get butterflies in my stomach. I don’t want to look bad in front of all the people I love to tease! But then, before I know it, the first autocross of the year is upon me and I fall back into the swing of things. I’m lucky this year because Andrea Bell has offered to take over the primary registration responsibilities (after having done it for about 7 years). Mike Lockas took over doing worker assignments 2 years ago. Now it seems as though I have a bit of time in the mornings to focus! That’s good and bad. Good that I can think; bad that I can think too much!

We switched to working, had lunch, and then came back out for another go at it. For my second set, I turned in some GREAT times! I had James’ times beat, but I knew he had one more session to go. You see, while HE isn’t all that competitive with me, he can afford to be that way because he nearly always beats me! I, on the other hand, am extremely competitive with him AND everyone else. I can’t use the excuse that his car is better set up than mine or his tires are stickier. I blame it on the testosterone. He has too much and I don’t have enough. I’ve said for years that I’d take testosterone injections if I weren’t so afraid of the facial hair! But I digress… As I watched him drive his final few laps, ever improving his times, I started getting those butterflies again. I wanted him to do well, but just not beat me this time. On his final lap, he drove like a madman and ended up spinning. Argh! I didn’t want it to end like THAT!... Although… I did beat his time… *giggle*

Photos by Charie Davis

Not only did I beat James’ time, but I got Bryan, too! I’ve not beaten him in forever and this time it was only by 0.009 seconds! The only Porsche to best me that day was Danny Nowak in his tricked out white 914-6! (And I’ve been told he drove for several years in Indy Lights, so I don’t feel so bad!) What a day! What an event! What a big head I now need deflating… It was fun.

The course Bryan designed for AX #1 at Texas Motor Speedway really made me crazy. I *HATE* pivot cones more than any other element available in an autocross. I can’t seem to get them right. I’ll take slaloms, skidpads, and boxes any day over pivot cones. Bryan’s course had FIVE of them, zig zagging back and forth in the same section. I, of course, thought he did it to be mean to me. He, of course, did it to be challenging and something we’d never seen before. Regardless, I grumbled about it and shook my fist in his general direction.

Wendy’s first pivot cone of the season James took his laps first and turned in some good times. After changing the car from fitting his 6’3” frame to my 5’4” one, I was ready for his sage advice. He’s a great husband in that he’s not as interested in beating my times as he is in improving my driving. He’s always quick to tell me what line to try, what gears to use, and how he thinks I can speed up. I’m usually 1-2 seconds behind his time. While in “real life,” that’s time for only a quick breath, but for an autocross lap, it feels like forever! My times end up being pretty decent. I was surprised because I felt there was more I could do.

Fun After the Storm by Jeff Herrmann and Tannia Dobbins

I Photos by Charlie Davis

n spite of the recent storms and the eight inches of rain Mineral Wells received the day before, the weekend of Mar 30/Apr 1 was absolutely beautiful and many folks made the trip on good faith that MineralRing would be in shape for the events. Those who showed up were delighted with the wonderful weather (although Saturday morning was a little chilly and windy – imagine that) and a nice clean lot. Jim Hedderick (Boxster, #39), who made the trip from Houston, found the event worthy and fun. Even Mike Lockas (944, #31) still came out Mike is bundled up after the hotel called him to per the hotels warnings discourage his trip!

Time Trial #1

Photos by Charlie Davis

The Time Trial configuration was laid out for course #1 which was nice because this was the one that the TT School students were familiar with. It is great having the confidence to take on something familiar … and something that we tackled just a few weeks before. In fact, the course was actually a little more fun since the right corner after start/finish had been opened up slightly making it easier to navigate the turn.

Well Jeff, you didn’t HIT the cone, but is backwards the quicker way around it? The opening season for time trials saw the launching of a new timing program. All was off to a great start then some SNAFU’s appeared. Several cars were given reruns … well, I guess you could say they needed them after seeing run times about 30 seconds faster than their competitors. I know Bryan Bell (996, #204) told everyone at the driver’s meeting that he was going to get the fastest time of the day (because, as he exclaimed, “Richard Diller (911S, #550) is Rick Randall doing the Wave not here!”). Indeed he did with a 65.566, but we are still wondering what he put under the hood that day! Jake’s dad, Kevin (#122), driving a BMW M3, ended up having to take ten laps all at once but after eight had said “enough!” There is indeed something odd about being out there all by yourself going around and around... 16

Since the day progressed rather quickly, Bryan and a bunch of volunteers took the time to paint the course. In fact, they were able to paint permanent markings for courses one, two, and three.

Autocross #2 Charlie Davis devised a course that used almost every foot of the MineralRing. It was one of the longest courses seen in a great number of events. He was able to combine some technical turns while still making the course easy to follow. Very few people got lost on this 90-100 second course. Of course, what would a Charlie constructed course be without the theme names for each turn. With names like Propaganda, Chi Z, Chi Cane, Tunnel and Momentum, the court could not determine if the theme was Chinese (Chi = energy), Chicago (Chi short for Chicago) or Vietnam (Propaganda, Tunnel, and Momentum). As for dinner, there was a good turnout at Baris’ (we got to sit in the back room). The only scary event of the evening was when Nancy decided she was ready to help Mike Lockas (944, #31) expand his talents. Mike received “on the fly” training on how to work the cash register and really enjoyed taking everyone’s money that night. Tannia Dobbins (Boxster, #77) who wasn’t sure Mike really know what he doing with everyone’s credit cards opted to pay cash just to be on the safe side. Maybe it was because she heard Mike say “Now…how do I run those credit cards through again?”

It’s great to see Danny Nowak back out at Mineral Wells

Danny Nowak (914, #306), back this year after a long hiatus, was having some excellent runs when the shifting linkage gave out. He really wanted to stay for the autocross on Sunday but couldn’t

Wendy Shoffit (911, #11) being the trooper that she always is, worked setup, registration etc. and didn’t have time to walk the course. This was apparent during her first run when she scared us all to death by trying to reconfigure the course on the fly! She got over it right way and came back to take the fastest time of the day among the ladies with a 98.618. What would any weekend be without a few technical car problems? It seems that Rick Randall (Targa, #161) wanted to participate so much that he drove all the way there on corded tires … raced the morning time trials, then figured he had better leave a little rubber on the tires to get home in one piece so he headed out at lunch time. Needless to say, we missed his lively radio etiquette calling in each car status at start/finish.

Just a Couple Technical Problems

Jason Rogers shows Jeff the right way to go around a cone figure out how to run the course without first and second gear. Nonetheless, he and Nan enjoyed Baris’ and a relaxing evening with the dinner group.

Photos by Charie Davis

Clay Perrine (914, #24) was having a great weekend until something went awry with his car at corner four of the autocross course. It seems that he went into the Chi Cane box and never came back out. I’m not sure that this was what Charlie had in mind when he designed it! One last note: For all of you that didn’t hear the news, Tracey Gross (Boxster, #284) was planning on attending but broke her wrist the week before. So to Tracey: GET WELL SOON. We missed you this weekend!! Clay flies by the cone, prior to the Chi Cane Chuck McCoy (944, #44) had a scare on the TT course at corner 3 (caught on camera by Charlie Davis) – which was probably not the corner where you wanted your brakes to fail. Well, actually, it was just one brake pad, but Chuck had to forego the rest of the afternoon session until he could make evening repairs. All turned out well since Chuck was able to step in and work start/finish when Rick departed. Photos by Charie Davis

Who can forget the story Christy Dominick (944, #199) and Denny Payne (944, #991) had about their 944 not starting? It seems that Christy may have a potential career in auto mechanics since she knew that a screwdriver squeezed in the right place can help free up a stuck injector every time! Both Christy and Denny missed the time trials but they made sure they were at Baris’ for dinner that night. Grab the flag, Bryan... not Connor 17

Happy Hour at Saltgrass by Dennis Chamberlain Speaking of Germany and traditions, for our happy hour on May 17th we return to the Bavarian Grill in Plano. Come ready to enjoy the German food and wine, and remember that the portions are huge, so you might want to share. Hope to see you there!

One of the highlights of the evening had to be Clint Blackman who appeared with, of all things, an HO gauge Porsche locomotive made by Marklin trains (made, of course, in Germany). It’s a replica of the Deutsche Bahn electric engine that transports our completed cars from Stuttgart to the North Sea for overseas transport. Clint knew all the statistics for it, including the fact that it had 8,200 horsepower HO Gauge and can do zero to 200 kmh in 20 seconds! The statement on the side of the locomotive says “We sit here on the rails, but our heart is on the road.”

For dinner Tinker Edwards and I shared a ribeye, and you would have thought we were at Del Frisco’s (well, almost), while at the same time debating with Karen Lincoln the benefits of eating raw oatmeal (you sort of had to be there).

Welcome, New Members! You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events, while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences. You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses, and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer. Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family), and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity, the Hope Shelter. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us... we might just add something extra to the calendar. Please also feel free to share article ideas (and submissions)to editor@mavpca.org.

We’d love to hear from you!
