My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor
T
oday’s thought is not a Trivial matter. In fact it’s a thought that’s been discussed quite a few times here lately. I’m talking about the Trivia contests. [Direct eyes below.] We’ve been running the contest for several years now, started by Werner Foltz in 2002. After several years he turned it over to Steve Dodd who then gave it to Bob Kuykendall. Bob used pictures in his questions several times making them quite interesting. Last fall Bob turned the reins over to Jerry DeFeo who, after several months, created the Trivia Light with questions a little more on the light side. So now the wonderment is; “Do we continue?” Or have we worn everyone out? Would you rather see the questions, then next month get the answer explained? Do you like the information, but you don’t care about “testing” yourself? Or is it that you don’t quite get around to opening the website (remember it’s in full glorious color) in order to submit your answers? Do let us know what you’re thinking (if you indeed are). I know you are reading THIS piece of the magazine because I’ve gotten some comments. So tell me and Jerry what your thoughts are.

Catch My Draft by James Shoffit, Region President
I
wrote last time about the Zone 5 Presidents’ meeting and some of the ideas that other regions had come up with. One thing that sounded interesting to me was a Formula 1 dinner and watching party. Now I have no idea how many people out there besides me keep up with the highest level of racing. But the idea was that if the race for that weekend was held in Monza, we would find an Italian restaurant, and if the race was in Hockenheim, we would try to find a German restaurant for dinner. And then the next day we could find a local sports bar or grill that might be open for the race. It might be a crazy schedule, or it might be a lot of fun – who knows. Let me know what you think! And no, I don’t know of any Canadian, Australian, or Singaporian restaurants, so don’t ask me that. Another thing that came up at the last board meeting was regarding Founders Day. There are some people that
feel the majority of time is spent on Autocross and Time Trial awards, which is true. It is harder to award trophies for DE where no competition is allowed, and we only have one club race, so we fell into this pattern of Founders Day that we have. We do award Rally Trophies, but if you have ideas of other things we could do – or what we could do WITHOUT at Founders Day, PLEASE let me know. Seriously – I would like to hear what you think would make a fun Founders Day dinner. Casual versus Formal, or anything else you can think of. Really what I would like as President is more feedback – I can be reached at president@mavpca.org at any time, and would love to hear from you.
Check the calendar for upcoming events – we have tech sessions, rallies, DE events, autocrosses, time trials, and happy hours – this is our busy time of year! We have fun stuff for track cars and street cars and socialites. So come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Maverick Concours Season 2008 by Jack Griffin
I
can attest that Bob Bianconi has very large shoes… I know this because Ron Knight, Frank Briggs, and I have the challenge of filling his shoes in heading up the Concours events for this year. Bob has done an incredible job over the years of creating fun-filled as well as educational events that showcase our wonderful cars as the artistic achievement that they are. Through his leadership of events, many people have become interested in making their Porsche look as great as possible, and in many cases even better than when it left the factory. As daunting a task as it is, the three of us will try to make this the best year ever for this ever popular activity. We plan to create a number of concours activities, including seminars on the “how to do it” side of preparation. Ever wondered just how to make your car sparkle, including the methodology and best products to use? We plan to make that information available so that everyone has the ability to win top prize in whatever event they choose to enter. Of course, the side benefits will be numerous; the therapeutical effect of bonding with your car while transforming it into a winner, the increased value of a prize
winning Porsche, and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow concours-ites. We will also show the ins and outs of judging so that you know exactly how to score points. Or, to be more correct, how to not have points deducted. So, our initial kick-off event will be the traditional May at Mayos, on May 17. This event will be a judged event much the same as last year. The emphasis will be on cleanliness of the “visible” parts of cars and the white glove routine. In addition to seven class winners, there will be an Overall Winner as well as People’s Choice award. More on this to come later! We will be announcing the schedule for other events very soon as they are organized. In addition to our own Maverick events, we will partner with other car clubs for combined marques concours and give us a chance to show them just how great cars can look. Also, we will have the opportunity for a group presence at car shows and events that are held in the area throughout the year. For information and any suggestions you might have for an event, please let me know. We want to make it fun for everyone, including spectators as well.

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis, Secretary
M
averick Region Board Meeting on April 2, 2008
In attendance: James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Jan Mayo, Tracey Gross, Mark Gluck, Jack Griffin, Darron Shaffer, Clay Perrine, Mike Lockas, Lisa Steele, Christy Dominick, Denny Payne, Robyn Howard, Travis Howard, Teri Davis, Charlie Davis, & Clint Blackman. James called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM sharp. James started the meeting by discussing the Founders Day banquet. He has heard that most Club Racers don’t like it…they think the evening is dominated by awards for Autocross and TimeTrials. A lengthy discussion of ways to change this perception ensued. We decided to present a summary of all Maverick Region activities, including Club Racing and Driver Education. We’ll create a PowerPoint presentation to guide the presenters. James announced that he will miss the next Board Meeting. Since we had no club race representatives, Wendy (with Lisa’s support) made some announcements. Registration
opened on April 1 and there are already 6-8 entrants (this was NOT a joke). Jan reminded Teri that she needed to get her a Rally ad. Jack said he had an ad ready for the Concours. Jan was feeling good about the expanded slipstream staff: Tannia Dobbins is working on a two page Autocross/Time Trial spread (for AX 102 and TT 103)… Richard Bradley is now doing the Unclassifieds and New Members, plus he will get the Happy Hours next. Mike Kuhn has been doing the Trivia and Trivia Light layouts for several months and Matt Platts continues to help with the photo set ups. Tracey told us that the May at Mayo’s event was scheduled at 6:30 PM and will cost $20.00 per person. Founders day is no longer going to be at the Adolphus hotel in downtown Dallas. She presented several new options to the board and we selected the Marriott DFW North venue. We also chose to make this a casino night again. Although it was a bit off topic here, we discussed the need for a new AX - TT printer. Charlie volunteered to handle this. Jack suggested that Tracey consider the Cooper Aerobics Center for future Founders Day Banquets. Mark, as usual, was on top of our insurance issues. Someone asked about old waver forms and he said yes he keeps them and to send completed waiver forms to him. Jack mentioned that the first Concours event will be at May at Mayo’s. He suggested that a detailing class would be well received by our members. He also is looking into holding joint Concours events with other clubs. Darron, taking cues from both Mark and Bob K (not in attendance), said that our timing stuff works. Clay proclaimed that Autocross #1 went well, with 55 entrants. We had three local police vehicles observing the event at one time. He wants to see if they would be interested in a “Cop Car Challenge” at future events. Clay said that he was still working on upgrades to the timing program. He talked with the What-a-burger manager after AX #1 who said they did a lot of business that day. Everyone was allowed 10 runs at the first event. Mike said that Happy Hours are going well. The next one (April) will be at iFratelli. In May we go to Edelweiss in Fort Worth and in June to Abuelo’s in Lewisville. Lisa inquired about the ad space; is it good? Jan replied yes, that it was. DE catering will now be only for the fixed staff…she’s having problems finding good food vendors. She will send the e-mail to DE entrants about food! Denny suggested he can do polls on the website. James thought this was a good idea.
8
Robyn had no polls, no poles, no nothing‌but the calendar is OK. She will work with Denny to get the calendar on the website. Travis is concerned about the fee for the Time Trials at MSR. He also was not sure how to handle registration, since we can only accept 42 entrants. Specifically, he asked whether to give preference to entrants running for year-end points? Teri said her Rally School will be on June 7th. She also said the Charlotte Parade had 929 entrants. Charlie admitted that scoring for AX #1 was not going well. He doesn’t yet have any data. Clint announced a tech session on Saturday, April 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM . Cliff will not be able to attend this event so James will be the official Maverick Region representative. Clay will tell Al Zim about our May 10th swap meet. The recent Azalea Sunday Drive was successful, with 25 cars, in spite of a little rain. The April 20th Bluebonnet drive was also well attended. James adjourned the meeting at 8:36 PM.

Autocross School 102-What a Difference A Day Makes By Michael Pelletier
I
t’s Saturday morning, 6:30AM as I drive west of Fort-Worth and realize that this is one of the great benefits of joining the Maverick region and the driving school: to be doing something different. There is also something to be said about the beauty of the Texas plains, especially when you come from the French Alps as I did. It’s now 8 AM and the 944 that suddenly popped into my rear-view mirror confirms that I am getting close. As we finally reach destination, Lisa and Andrea are the first to welcome us with great smiles and go over the details of the registration process. I chat with a few participants and get introduced to my instructor for the Michael volunteers day, the Awesome Marilyn, who I am told with a big smile! is the 2007 rookie of the year. Quickly, everybody gets busy emptying the cars while the inspection is being carried out. At 9 am Bryan calls the drivers meeting and goes over the activities of the morning as well as the all important safety guidelines. The drivers are split in 3 groups for each one of the 3 work areas with a rotation every 45 minutes. Marilyn takes the wheel to show me how to approach the first exercise: an oval shaped skid pad with 2 hard left turns. I immediately understand why Marilyn was recognized for her skills last year. The drive is sharp, precise and exhilarating; this is going to be fun! Trying my best to emulate my instructor’s line, I come to realize in a matter of seconds that there is nothing else I would rather be doing than this! I Mark showis Richard clearly missed my calling! Why isn’t where to look ahead race-car driver ever presented as an option in these career fairs at school? Before long we rotate to the next exercises, and start working on a faster course which looks more like a time trial set-up composed of a short straight, a long curve, a long straight, a chicane, and a short left turn to end the course. Marilyn takes over and shows me her line. As a trained AX driver she leaves no room inside the turns and keeps a very tight line. As I question my line for the first curve, Bryan is asked to show-me his line. His driving is faster and I can see the track background as he takes longer sweeping lines to maximize acceleration and grip. Another 4 laps later, I Tannia with Megan... am still in search of my line when the looking ahead too 45 minutes resonate. Now it’s time 10

for the last exercise of the morning: slaloms and a chicane.
After a lunch break and another driver’s meeting, the drivers are split in 2 groups: one runs the course while the other works the Wayne instructs Avery cones and calls the penalties. The to go left here course compiles all the exercises of the morning in a great way: it starts fast with a long straight followed by a long curve which leads right into the almost perfectly round circle, ending into the slalom and a fast straight. A sharp left turn leads to a box and into the slow series of turns and the finish line. By the end of the day, Charles will manage the best time with a 69 run in his track Corvette. Meagan M. was the fastest lady around the track in her Mini Cooper S and a time of 74. Meanwhile, I ran my last lap at 71.5, an encouraging personal best. By then, the tires are complainMeagan gets Tannia’s ing a lot and new vibrations version of “go left” have appeared in hard turns; yes, welcome to Autocross where your tires aren’t so much yours as they are the track’s. By 5:30PM we are done, tired, ready to go, but everybody is smiling, and we all seem to have had a good time. I say goodbye to everyone and starts the drive back home thinking about the day. I must say, this was the most fun day I have had in years! I had a blast, met great people, learned a lot in a perfect environment. The volunteers are just so efficient and so friendly, so quick to make you feel “Hats off” to all the volunteers right at home and share their experience that I cannot think of a better school. My hat is off to the volunteers for giving us such a memorable experience, and making us feel welcome. I certainly encourage everyone to participate in the school programs as well as the racing events. The next day I signed up for the first Autocross at the Birdville ISD, and the 6-point harness is on order… Yes, I am already hooked on driving with the Maverick region.
Time Trial School 103 - Corner Surprises By Tannia Dobbins Photos by Charlie Davis the corner, how to look ahead, etc. During time trial he last school of the year is the “Time Trial” school which is personally one of my favorites. events an added bonus is that green pylons are used to denote corner apexes – thus This is the time to really see what you and car are making it easier for the student capable of doing at faster speeds. Today started out like most days with volunteers and students to “see” the line in the corner.
T
alike ready for a fun yet informative day. Only this day was indeed different. Sometime during the night -- for it had to be since we were just here for the autocross school the day before -gremlins left a sight to behold in corner Bryan preparing for the three. Bryan quickly assessed the situday’s events ation and concluded that this was an excellent place to ponder the day’s events. I guess our tricksters ran out of Easter eggs and left us something else to “hunt.”
Once the excitement of the find Jeff performing tech was over and the driver’s meetinspections ing was complete, the rest of the morning was dedicated to learning the finer points of time trial events. The lot in Mineral Wells is an excellent place for the time trail school as it is very large and free from obstructions. During the morning, the lot is divided into two sections that mirror the actual time trial course, John making sure the tires minus the middle section. This is a are ready great way to see the major sections of the course, learn about threshold breaking, throttle steering, under steering, what happens when you hit gravel on
Time Trial School Configuration used during the morning sessions.
The afternoon session puts everything together and the students actually have timed Be careful in Corner 4! runs! They take everything they learned in the morning and put it to the test. However, there is always a catch. Once the morning sections of the course are put together to form the actual time trail course, a new area, shown as ‘corner 4’, emerges in the center of the course. Of all the corners, this is most problematic for the stuA very windy Wendy dents because they’ve not practiced it and you really have to look ahead to drive it correctly. For the corner workers and spectators at the event there are bound to be a handful of spins in this corner.
Adam with a wheel almost off the ground!
Sunday turned out to be a great day for the time trail school. A special thanks to all the volunteers who came out to brave the wind (such as Wendy) and put on a fun yet informative school. See you all next year!

Eagles Canyon DE and the “Aha” Moment by Roy Clingman
H
aving been a PCA member and 911 owner for quite some time, adding a 914/6 to the garage meant it was time to head to the track. It had been a long time coming for me, and was a perfect opportunity to learn at the brand new facility at Eagles Canyon. Giddy as a kid anticipating Christmas morning, I packed all the necessary tools and supplies, and headed off at “O:dark thirty” for the 50 mile drive to Slidell. I could hardly wait to get there. The temperature Saturday morning was a balmy 17 degrees F, but most of the 9 inches of snow Snow was no deterent that fell in Slidell on Thursday, had already melted. Although I had read all the DE handbook info several times, I still wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The event organization was really impressive. Registration and the Drivers Meeting went smoothly, with the emphasis on safety. The communication was Eagles Canyon has a very nice, great and even though a large Grid area lot of it focused on the cold conditions, and the water on and around the track, it was geared toward all experience levels. I’m sure the organizers felt like they were “herding cats”, trying to get 100+ cars and drivers in the right place at the right time. It all came off like clockwork, and the effort by all involved was
Cars continuing around Turn One

really impressive. The classroom instruction for us “Greenies” was also well done. Thanks to Keith Olcha and John Sandusky for a session geared to novices, as well as those with a bit of Saturday morning started with Ice on experience. They most of the corners went out of their way to answer all of the groups’ questions in detail, while emphasizing safety and having fun, every step of the way. My driving instructor, Rick Del Monte, was really terrific as well. Besides just being an all round great guy, he was really patient with my learning. Rick drove first, talking me around the track, the apexes, track out points and correct line. Once it was my turn, he calmly and confidently coached me thru the headset. It really helped me gain some confidence, reassuring me as I learned the correct line. Rick didn’t even scream in fear as I got him going backwards once at about 60 mph. Now for the “Aha” moment…. About halfway thru the second day, Rick invited me to ride in the right hand seat of his 911, while he drove in the Red run group. I’m not sure he got the invitation out of his mouth before I replied yes, as this was an “E ticket” ride I didn’t want to miss. We buckled in and Rick pulled out of the hot pits and down the straight into turn 3, calmly telling me thru the headset, that Exiting the track once we got the tires up to temperature, we would get going a bit faster. WE WERE ALREADY GOING A LOT FASTER THAN I HAD EVER CONTEMPLATED in that part of the track!!! Rick was smooth as silk, dancing the car from apex to apex, once again talking me around the track. We followed Colin Graidage in the #21 car for a bit, and watching him “3 wheel” his way thru turn 1 and 2 was truly amazing. Then it dawned on me… “Aha!!” …. That little 914/6 could go a lot faster ……
Next session out, I was resolved to find out. Rick had me fairly confident in the correct line, and the most amazing thing happened as the speed picked up. The car came alive. The transitions seemed more fluid, the turns seemed carved, and the brake points and shifting all seemed easier. We were starting to pass some cars, even though they had 150-200 more horsepower than the 914/6. Though it was tough to keep up with them on the straights, thru the “twisties”, it was amazing to watch them fade off in the rear view mirror…. I have much yet to learn, and I’m sure that with the MRPCA DE instructors and organizers the learning curve will be shorter rather than longer. I can’t wait for the next DE, and would encourage others to try it. Is it time yet? During lunch you can take your friends or family for some laps around the track for a donation to the Maverick Regionn’s charity, The Hope House. Hee’s Jan with the rules and a fist full of dollars for Hope.
Maverick’s Presence at TWS Club Race
This is what happens when someone oils the track. Colin Graidage spins one way facing left in the grass. Doug Molny spins the other way facing right off the back side of the track. And the 914 from Oklahoma goes merrily on his way through the middle.

Happy Hour at Go Fish by Bob Lewis
T
he Happy Hour this past March was celebrated at Go Fish in Addison. We had a good turn out. The restaurant has plenty of parking a few steps from the door. This parking was so inviting that a number of attendees decided to show off their cars. Notice the image with the restaurant just behind the row of fine Porsches. The red vintage Porsche on the far end with the driving lights belongs to Jack Griffin. Jack is the new Nice cars! Concours chair for our Maverick Region. He has a collection of fine cars. In fact he has a new development in the process that will house collector’s cars. The concept is to make room for your car collection when you run out of space at home. It is under construction adjacent to Love Field in Dallas. I believe it will be a first of its kind in the US. This will be a very interesting project that should be widely covered in future Slipstreams. Jack has quite a history with Porsche cars. Among many past activities he has driven/raced at both Lemans and Sebring. It was indeed a pleasure talking with him at Go Fish. Marc & Bonnie
Marc and Bonnie Thaler were Thaler in attendance. Bonnie as you my recall from the January Slipstream is expecting their first child in May. She looks great to me but says her doctor wants her to gain some more weight. She is a busy gal and watches what she eats as a routine course. Being pregnant is new at the Thaler household and so is the diet for Melinda & Doug Molny same. We are excited about this new arrival and will keep you up to date. Doug and Melinda Molny were at Go Fish. Doug is a PCA Club Racer in class G. The club racers are all fun people and Doug and Malinda are no exceptions. I am often surprised at whom we meet and what we learn at the Happy Hours. Have you tasted a pomegranate martini yet? Well Clara says they are great. And she never drinks 24

martinis. Pomegranate is a popular health food product as per the May Consumers Reports magazine. Go Fish does have an extensive bar. Their fish items were wonderful as usual. But someone tried a filet and was not entirely satisfied. I was similarly non-impressed with Tammy Cordes havin’ fun! the fish at Mac’s Steak and Seafood a couple of month’s ago. I guess the lesson is to stick to the headlined item for you are in uncharted water down the menu on Thursdays. Next month, on May 15, we are going to a new (for us of the Happy Hour crowd) German restaurant. It is Edelweiss German Restaurant and is in Fort Worth where Camp Bowie meets Southwest Blvd. Clara and I scouted this place recently. It seemed to be a lot of fun. They have live music and a large bar and dance floor. The German food was very tasty too. See you soon.

Welcome, New Members! You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events, while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences. You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses, and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer. Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family),and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity, The Huffaker Hughes Hope House. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us...we might just add something extra to the calendar. Please also feel free to share article ideas (and submissions) to editor@mavpca.org.

Not so many years ago, spotting another Porsche on the road was a welcome event. Without ever meeting the driver, you could rest assured that you had encountered a kindred spirit; someone who shared your appreciation of one of the best engineered performance cars in the world. As a sign of acknowledgment, the drivers would flash their headlights. Though some still practice the tradition, many old owners have gotten lazy and many new owners have never learned this important tradition. Owning a Porsche is a unique experience. Do your part to preserve the experience.....keep the flash alive! 27
