LACK MAY! I tell this story at my own peril. Judy will get mad at me all over again, women will call me disgusting names, and men will wonder how I ever lived through it, never mind stay married. Oh well, I tell this mainly for the benefit of recently married men so they can benefit from my evil ways. (I think we were married seven years when Black May hit.) May is a triple Judy month: birthday, Mother’s Day, and our anniversary. My first mistake was forgetting her birthday, bad enough all by itself. On Mother’s Day I foolishly thought I could ignore the whole affair. That was a very bad idea being that by then she was the mother of our two kids. Even my mom was mad at me now. The unthinkable then happened, yea, I forgot our anniversary. I now know the terrible trouble I was in. I begged forgiveness, vowed it would never happen again, and pleaded for one more opportunity for redemption. It was then I suggested we reserve the following Sunday for a very special celebration of all the special days I had blown. Judy, being the wonderful person she is, readily agreed. I could still survive with our marriage intact. …………. You guessed it. I forgot. Again. This all happened 36 years ago, and we are still together. I have never again forgotten. I don’t think she has either. What an awesome Maverick month April is turning out to be. We are now full steam ahead on our Hope Project. The playground equipment is installed and it is magnificent! Linda Bambina will tell you all about it. The bluebonnet drive was a huge success, all the socials are great, we are Auto Crossing and Time Trialing, and as of this writing, the DE sponsored by Park Place is nearly sold out. May is just as busy. The Club Race and DE sponsored by Boardwalk will be the perfect event to cap off another busy month. All of you are welcome to watch the exciting races on Memorial Day weekend. Check the schedule and browse the event ads in Slipstream for all the other activities we have going. Man, we are one cool car club!

Mav of the Month Our “Mav of the Month” is Linda Bambina. Nobody can top the effort and enthusiasm that Linda has for the 2

Huffaker Hughes Hope House. Linda has been the driving force behind our backyard project, and it seems she can almost be everywhere at once. She is the planner, fund raiser, worker, and cheerleader. She’s a tough act to follow.

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Linda dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Linda thanks for all you do! Mike

re you ready? There are a lot of activities again this month as well as some on the not too distant horizon. There’s something for everyone so please come out and enjoy PCA. With the help of a dedicated few, the Huffaker Hughes Hope House has a new playground and for those who still have a desire to contribute time, money, or both, check out the ad on page nine. With your help on Phase 3, we can reach or maybe even exceed our goal of providing a parklike environment providing a safe playground for the children and mothers who are victims of domestic violence. Then on another front, technology is changing at the speed of Porsche! Porsche reveals its High-Performance 918 Spyder Concept with its highly efficient and ultra-fast plug-in hybrid super sports car unveiled in Geneva. If any one of you takes delivery, you will have to take me for the ride of my life, and I promise to put you and your car on the cover.

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

T

his month’s board meeting began with much gratitude for ALL of the fabulous work Linda Bambina has taken on with the current HOPE project of creating a kid friendly backyard. Linda reported that Phase 1 of the project is now complete. Claps around the room for everything Linda has done to get the ball rolling with this project! A legal question did come up about this project so Mike will investigate outside counsel. Mr. Pres also shared some ideas about how we are going to recognize our donators of the HOPE project. Christy Payne chimed in with her designs. The Millennium Club members will receive a beautiful plaque and the Century Club members will receive a lovely framed certificate. We already have 5 members of the Millennium Club, so those plaques will be ordered shortly. There is also a raffle that anyone can participate in by purchasing tickets at all events and on the website. The cost is $25 per ticket or 5 for $100. The drawing will be held on June 24th. See the Hope raffle ad on the next page (unfortunately, this Secretary does not know what the drawing is for, so please stay tuned and I

will get that information…you know it will be something GOOD!) Jim Falgout was present long enough to write a few checks and announce that “we have money.” Due to this being tax season, we were very fortunate to get Jim away for this short time. Thanks Jim for ALL you do! Clint Blackman announced that the last Sunday drive had a good turn out with 41 cars. Clint also unveiled his wonderful participation badge (sticker) that all Sunday Drive participants will receive. Kevin Hardison was the designer of these very cool collectible stickers. The next drive is the Bluebonnet Drive…wouldn’t it be cool to have a picture of Porsche smack dab in the middle of a field of bluebonnets just like the little kids on the side of the road??? I guess too many flowers would be damaged. Bob Lewis reported that the last Happy Hour at Uncle Julio’s was a success with many people staying to eat dinner. The next HH will be at the Bavarian Grill in Plano on April 15th. Jan Mayo reported that five of our advertisers still need to pay for their advertising space for this year. Richard Bradley announced that Slipstream ran a little late last month, but Ussery helped to catch us up. Bryan Bell reported that he’s got nothin’. Christy Payne said that she has created a way for all calendar information to be steamlined. All Chairs send their information to calendar@mavpca.org and this will go to the website, Slipstream, and Robyn Howard. This should make the communication for updating the calendar much much easier. Cheers for Christy!! Lisa Steele spoke for Andrea Bell about an email she received about a local event. If anyone has a yellow Porsche and would love to put it on display the night of the new Twilight movie, please contact Lisa or Andrea for more information. Lisa also reported that she is working on the Club Race in May at ECR. Wendy Shoffit is also working on Club Race stuff and everything is movin’ and shakin’ with registration. Wendy also gave a big THANKS to Lori Mauthe, Christy Payne, and Lisa Steele for coming to the Girl Scouts Powder Puff Derby. All of the girls had some awesome derbies and lots of fun was had by all. Robyn Howard is workin’ on the course for the next Autocross. Travis Howard shared that the last Time Trial/ Autocross was wet and VERY cold brrrr….18 drivers showed up and it was decided that everyone would get 2 sets of 3 which happens to be the minimum required to consider it an official event. The AX was set up in the snow but it actually turned out to be a sunny but COLD day of autocrossing.

8

Travis also reported that there is no longer a second set of timing lights so he is looking at purchasing a new set. The next TT/AX event is on April 17th & 18th at Mineral Wells. Pat Friend announced that the new Goodie Store Website is operating and off and running. Ed Mullenix reported that the tech session at Autoscope had 12 people who attended. Six people actually tested their car on the dyno. Everyone enjoyed the day! The next tech session will be a Do-It-Yourself- Tech Session on May 8th. Carey Spreen announced that he entered his first SCCA Rally to see how they run their events. This was a Map Rally where Mapsco prints out maps for each entrant. Sounds Fun!! The last item on the agenda was to announce our Mav of the Month. I think it is pretty obvious who should receive this honor this month with all of the tremendous work she has done‌Linda Bambina YOU are the Mav of the Month!! Meeting adjourned at 8:45

in class? Dad James, made sure her car was ready, with an alignment complete with corner weighting. Test runs made sure that the wheels were turning free and clear. I’m sure Wendy gave her go-fast tips as well.

So is it any surprise that Jasmine won a podium finish

Wendy asked fellow lady Maverick drivers to come to the event and bring their Porsches to show the girls that autosports isn’t just for boys anymore. Wendy, our Parade Fastest Lady Driver, brought her Parade Trophy and plaque, displayed on her Black 911. Christy Payne brought her street car with her special car numbers and Fastest Lady insignia. Lisa Steele had her racy white 911 that she is ready to take Club Racing. Lori Mauthe brought her gray Boxster S with the Komen Breast Cancer pink ribbon on the Maverick Ladies: Wendy, Lori, Lisa and Christy hood. Christy,

ould be… On Saturday, April 3rd, Wendy Shoffit supervised a Powder Puff Pinewood Derby event for her daughter Jasmine’s Girl Scout Troop. Nearly 50 hand made creatively decorated Pinewood Derby cars were entered by girls in one of four groups – Daisies, Juniors, Brownies and Girl Scouts. The track was setup – a ramp at one end and checkered flag A very fast family: James, Jasmine & Wendy Shoffit with a net at the other end, and the electronic timing equipment attached. None other than our own Zone 5 Rep James Shoffit, was in charge of timing and scoring. Wendy announced the grid and the winners of each run. To be fair, each car got a chance in each lane, and the fastest time determined class placement.

Lori and Lisa were the judges for the special awards for the Most Realistic, Most Decorated, Most Natural, Most Colorful and Most Creative design. And wow, were those tough decisions, the cars were all spectacular. After the racing was completed, the girls came out into the parking lot with their parents and took turns sitting in the Maverick cars. They asked a lot of Jasmine won with a podium questions and had finish in Class! a wonderful morning. It was thrilling to see how enthusiastic the young girls were about the chance to race their Pinewood Derby cars. So I would look to see some of these girls behind the wheel of their Porsches in the next decade, ready to drive well and fast into the future.

My family currently owns three Porsches, and I’ve made several modifications to my GT2: a DME re-flash and headers by FVD, intercoolers and wheels by Champion Motorsports and exhaust components by GMG Racing just to name a few. All of these modifications were done by Park Place, and together provide around 650 horsepower. The power in this car isn’t explainable until you ride in it. My favorite upgrade is the exhaust; the sound is glorious. I go in the garage at night and just start the car to listen to it run for a few minutes. My wife Valerie thinks I am crazy. I most enjoy Porsche’s racing heritage, and I’m amazed at their engineering abilities. I believe in the tradition, longevity, and quality. What I appreciate most about Park Place Porsche are the people. I’ve come to know many of the service managers at the front, and also enjoy talking with the guys who work on the vehicles in back – that’s not something you typically get to do at a dealership. Everyone is knowledgeable about the brand, but more specifically about my cars. They know me and always do a quality job. I have recommended Park Place Porsche to many friends because they make it very easy and enjoyable to do business with them.

Sunday Drives to Hillsboro By Matt Lemons

I

t was a day of numbers, and I don’t just mean 914, weather, and these things aren’t maintained as frequently. 928, and 911. We had seventy-six participants, A good Sunday drive is an opportunity to show your car a forty one cars, two dogs, four counties, countless little special attention. Sarah (my girlfriend) and I started smiles and waves, all on one Sunday Drive. It wasn’t unthe day with a good wash for the car. Followed by a once til I pulled around the far side of the Whataburger meetover of safety items. Then we grabbed the camera and ing spot that I saw a couple of bottled all of the cars. Wow, waters for the road I thought, I didn’t and we were off. expect this many Driving around people. This was my town doesn’t offer first Social event as this kind of scenery, a new PCA member. trees, farm land, and What luck, my first sweeping two lane event, and I scored back roads. Heck, one of the first ever even the cars around Maverick Region you are worth lookLet’s meet up and move out! PCA Sunday Drive ing at. Sunday drives badges. aren’t about speed, but they are about enjoying good Springtime is here and this was the first Sunday Drive of the year. Often times, driving is just about getting from point A to B. Spending some time behind the wheel like this brings to mind some of the finer points of owning a performance automobile. For instance, all of

those safety related items that often get over looked. When was the last time you checked your oil level, tire pressure, lug nuts, or brake lights? Maybe you drive your Porsche everyday and these things get taken for granted. Maybe you only drive it on the we e ke n d s or in good 16

company and your car. Maybe you pull the shift lever one gear lower than you normally would through the next few turns giving that P car engine a chance to breathe a little deeper and sing that tone we all love so much. Right about now is when you feel like your car is saying “thank you” for the special attention. Daily driver or not, these roads and the people on them will make you appreciate Porsche ownership way more than red lights or I-635 ever could. So whether you’re a new member like me, or a long time member that just hasn’t participated, join the group for the next Sunday Drive. It promises excellent flora and BBQ. Oh, one last number for the day, seven. Seven gallons of gas, you’ll appreciate them more than the seven you burned going to work that’s for sure.

Sunday Drives, what a great way to spend the afternoon

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

I

cannot believe the activity in the shop as spring blooms. It is as if every kind of Porsche related event that can be dreamed up is about to happen. Even events that are not Porsche car driven end up being Porsche related. Case in point. BMW club has a race scheduled for MSR this weekend. Last year they invited the Spec Box guys to come join in. It is something that was prudent for them to do as their field of entrants was kinda small and financially it was making the event hard to put on. The addition of the Spec Porsche people helped in this area financially. I went and stood at hot pit wall to see the action when enduro occurred. Fun stuff. When the green flag dropped and the first lap was over I got a kick out of how things sorted out. As cars came by on lap 2, 3 monstor motor Bimmers go by, then all the spec Boxsters, then all the rest of the BMW entrants (maybe 10 or more cars). Kind of a proud moment for a Porsche guy like myself. So the BMW event is tomorrow. Six Spec Box guys have signed up. Our guy (John) is not entered. He is busy getting ready for Heartland Park PCA Club Race scheduled for 4-17. Many Mavs are headed to Heartland. Multiple cars have suddenly appeared at the shop for some final set up work. One that caught my eye is a very rare 993RS. Beautiful factory prepared race car. I could not stop checking it out. The roll cage work is pure art. What a fabulous example of factory craftsmanship. Unbelievable. Took many pictures… The sound of the engine is so awesome... moving on. Michael Hsu brought his Spec Box up from Austin for the BMW race at MSR. He has scheduling problems that are preventing him from making Heartland. It was good to see Michael. Some alignment and corner balancing work was applied for this weekend. Multiple other race machines were in. I like this time of year. Clint Blackman came by and we had a great visit. He was most excited about the Sunday drive for Mavs thru the flower fields of Ennis (a Mav favorite Sunday drive). I was telling him about our Saturday drive for new Porsche owners and he ended up in deep discussion with Roger Reynolds (one of our parts gurus) that is going and had just completed a pre-drive of the run. I walk into parts and there they are

Spring Just Rocks with a map on the counter and a computer screen showing the drive route. Had a call from our resident Flying Lizard. He is busy with team members at Lizard shop in Sonoma California getting Bergmeister car ready for ALMS race at Long Beach this coming weekend. They were looking for the part number for a sealer (putty like material) that Porsche uses. I tracked down the number, passed it along and threatened him with horrible consequences if they do not kick Ferraris’ hind end. Ha! Corvette guys, BMW guys, etc., can win the class but they better not lose to Ferrari….. That’s important…………………… F1 racing is full on. Schuey has migrated from Ferrari. The RB6 Red Bull car is unbelievable. This series is gonna be fun to watch. Gotta love spring! Cliff

Too Many Porsches? by Jerry DeFeo

W

hile researching a few items for Trivia I came across a guy that just might have “too many Porsches!” He is the Sultan of Brunei. I have found conflicting reports of both 120 and 160. Well that certainly is more than I have, or Ed Mayo, or Jack Griffin, or even Jerry Seinfeld. I have been wondering if I wrote him a letter telling him that I have really wanted a ‘73 RS but just cannot afford one, if he would just send me one of his. Surely he must have a few of them!!! Hey, at least I am not being greedy asking for 959 or Carrera GT!!! Here is a picture of a car that he keeps in London that he had specially built for him when he is in town. It is a Factory-built Rolls Royce that is made to resemble a Porsche. Now I certainly do not think it looks as good as my ‘67 S Targa, but I sure know it costs more. But then again when you have so much money that you are making more at the rate of approximately $120 per second, $7200 per minute, $432,000 per hour, or $10,368,000 per day; a one-off Rolls Royce built Porsche is “no big deal!!!”

May Trivia It’s Easy to Play: Play here for Fun and Education and find the Answers below OR Play for Prizes on the Web at http://mavpca.org with the Answers and Winners to be posted at the end of the Month Thanks to Jerry DeFeo for putting this and the Web Trivia together! Congratulations to our March Web Winner Bob Kuykendall for getting five correct and who will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Zims Autotechnik

Member Spotlight: John Ver Vynck by Andrea Bell

I

am pleased to introduce to you another new Maverick member, John Ver Vynck. John owns a 1958 356 Speedster, numbers matching, with the original floor pans. It is silver with red and white piping. He loves the simplicity of the car and the way it handles. John also owns a 1997 993 Twin Turbo that is silver and black. He believes these two cars are the best produced by Porsche. He added the only other one he would own is the 550 Spyder. John has owned both cars for about eight years. He has put about 4,500 miles on the 993 in the past five years. He has only tracked the 993 once and loved it. He said, “I had the pleasure of attending one of the Autobahn road courses at Cresson race track. I urge all to attend.” The Speedster has some race history, but he has been unable to uncover exactly what it is.

He has lived in the DFW area for twenty years. He married a native Texan and has three boys that love cars like their dad. He said, “We spend time working on what we can, and enjoying the rest.” He also enjoys working in the yard,

speaking, and attending group activities. We are pleased to have John as a new member to our Maverick family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT’ feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org.

Happy Hour at Uncle Julio’s by Chris Christensen

S

o who is Uncle Julio anyway? Actually we were told that he is the figment or perhaps a brainstorm of someone who maybe had an Uncle who liked to cook Tex-Mex. We can only say that it really doesn’t matter all that much, it is a fun restaurant to visit with our Porsche Club friends. Parking was a small problem, which does indicate that the restaurant is popular with the locals at this location just east of the North Dallas Tollway at the Keller Springs intersection. It is easy to find and not far from the George Bush for those who are coming from the mid-cities area. With five restaurant locations to choose from in the Metroplex, and now with locations in four states, Uncle Julio’s is spreading faster than hot sauce on a chip. And, by the way, their hot sauce is a bit spicy for some, but the warm chips that seem to keep coming are great. It makes another margarita or beer seem a necessity with the usual cautions of course. In short – along with the great Tex-Mex, the bright spacious room with all its colors of reds, yellows and terra-cotta make for a realistic south of the border restaurant. So, who had a grandma who designed her big Sunday meals around dessert? It seems that in some families this was and maybe still is a custom. So with sopapillas (puffed Mexican pastries sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar, served with warm honey for dipping and ice cream) should we worry much about the main course? The cajeta’s looked awfully good as well; vanilla ice cream with toasted coconut and pecans topped with homemade caramel sauce and whipped cream. Okay, let’s forget grandma’s main course recipes and have a couple desserts, a margarita and go home happy. Now that you have all of this info, I expect all those who decided not to come out to HH will be there next time...and don’t wait for the Uncle’s to get back on the schedule – come anyway. By the way, about 30 Mavericks enjoyed mingling with friends and staying for dinner…a pretty good crowd. Okay, so I had the opportunity to sit across from one of our club racers and real Porsche enthusiasts, Mark Hanna and his lovely wife Monda at dinner. Can I say that I am a bit jealous when he showed me photos on how he stores all of those Porsche assets he owns? I think I will have to 24

start by mentioning to my better half that although I would like to rack and stack four Porsches that I will settle with just two Porsches stacked in a single car garage. Now that I revealed my strategy, I will have to work hard to promote the idea. I had no idea how relatively simple and inexpensively (relatively speaking of course) it is to modify a garage to install a stacking system. We Porsche enthusiasts have to have something to look forward to, right? Thanks Mark for sharing your garage with a neophyte. Recently a group of us signed up for this year’s Parade. Boy, are we ready to go or what…signing up on the first day of registration (March 9th). And this year I have decided to drive our low mileage Boxster to the event and even enter into the Concours. I vaguely remember someone from the group suggesting that everyone would pitch in to get the car ready on arrival. I plan to bring plenty of supplies for everyone…even rubber gloves… to keep the car as clean as possible when we go through the process. There are a few tricks to readying a car, but all of it deals with hard work and attention to detail. Even with all of the detail work, something always

gets overlooked. We will try hard and if not successful we hope at least we’ll have fun. Thanks to all for coming to this month’s happy hour and before we forget, Linda Bambina and Clara Lewis wanted all Mavericks to know that Hope House will be installing the children’s play ground known as Phase 3. Please check with Linda or Clara for all of the details. Help in installing the grounds is definitely welcome…as are donations to help offset the costs. This is, needless to say, a very important project for the young families who need a shelter. We know that many of you will pitch in with help and much needed Come have some fun! financial assistance. Next month’s happy hour will be held at Abuelo’s Mexican Food, Thu, May 20, 6:30pm – 9:00pm. Where: 2520 S. Stemmons Freeway, Lewisville, (972) 315-6057. See you at our next Happy Hour.

Arctic Weekend at The Mineral Ring By Carey Spreen

Photos by Kristi Kelley

M

arch 19, the Friday before the first Time Trial/ Autocross weekend of 2010, had been the warmest day of the year so far - sunny with temperatures near 70 degrees. Which made it all the more difficult to believe the weather reports that forecast snow and sub-freezing wind-chill factors in North Texas for the next two days. However, the weather reports were right - Saturday dawned wet and cold. Those who trailer their cars to Time Trials and Autocrosses kept their lightly-treaded sticky tires mounted, but the rest of us who drive our cars to these events had three choices: (a) Drive out on street tires, bringing the sticky tires with us to change on-site;

constant, so by the time the second run group finished, we all needed a good thawing. We ran Time Trial Course 1 in its traditional clockwise direction, with the tight left turn after the start/finish line. And even though the rain had stopped hours earlier, the damp track and cold tires made for some unpredictable traction conditions, and gave everyone plenty of opportunities to practice their skid-recovery skills, especially at that tight left.

“Turn into the skid” is the mantra we learned in those high school driver education classes, but what All smiles on the green light is usually not mentioned (c) Forget about the sticky tires and just run on street along with that is to straighten the wheel as you come out tires. of the skid, since, if you don’t straighten out, the car will recover from the skid, but will When I got there Saturday morning I saw all three continue into a similar swing choices in evidence. I had selected choice (a), but upon in the opposite direction. further review, the wind, rain, and cold convinced me that Which you then have to changing tires would not be worth fighting the unrelenting steer into again, repeating as wind, at least not on Saturday, so I went with (c) instead. necessary, until either the car Eighteen drivers showed up, a low number probably straightens out for good, or it caused by the Siberian turn the weather had taken. And finally comes to rest pointing because the rain, even though it had ended by 9 am, was in some direction contrary to supposed to turn to snow later in the day, the organizers early the one in which you would on decided to prefer it be pointing. give everyone (b) Mount the sticky tires at home, and take our chances driving to Mineral Wells on tires that are street legal but not at all intended for rainy or snowy winter conditions; or

their two sets of three runs and call it a day. Good choice, as it turned out. The entrants were divided up into the Ready to go traditional two run groups: workers went to their stations (1 per corner due to the small attendance), and drivers got in their cars. And as you might imagine, being in the car was the most comfortable place we could be! As the morning proceeded, the temperature continued to drop, but the wind remained 26

This phenomenon is sometimes known as “getting a little behind in your steering,” and all of us Who is that masked man? have experienced it at some point in our driving careers, hence the cheers that this occurrence elicits from the other competitors when it happens on course. Fortunately, the Mineral Ring is a very safe place to do this, since there is typically nothing to hit for hundreds of feet in any direction, except for those uncomplaining traffic cones, who willingly sacrifice life and limb for us on a regular basis. Anyway, we finished timed runs at about 12:30 and retired to Chili’s for a warm meal. Upon our return to the airport, a few good men and women dismantled the Time Trial course and set up the Autocross course for Sunday.

Mike Lockas did a few test runs on the course, since he would not be officially competing on it the next day, and was easily able to hit 70 mph on the back straightaway in his Audi A4. Sounded like it was going to be a fast course! I had left by that time, but as course setup was finishing, snow began falling. That evening, Ft Worth also got a light dusting of snow, but later I heard reports Travis braved the cold to of several inches of snow in launch the first TT of the year. the eastern reaches of the Metroplex. That probably accounted for the low turnout of 15 drivers on Sunday for the Autocross. However, in Mineral Wells, there was neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night to stay these autocrossers from the swift completion of their appointed laps. Chuck McCoy giving us the thumbs up. (Apologies to the US Postal Service . . .) Anyway, Sunday’s Autocross course was much longer than Saturday’s Time Trial course, in terms of time if not distance. It consisted of a few sets of offset gates, a quick slalom, a very long straightway (4th gear for most of us) containing a small kink to prevent the speeds from going even higher, and another set of offset gates with a 180 thrown in. It took us each about a minute and a half to drive around it, so the jokes about not being able to finish the morning course walk before nightfall were not too much of an exaggeration. So after 10 runs each, plus fun runs, we called it a weekend. And once again, we were reminded that, although the MineralRing does not have much to offer in the human comforts department, we always get lots of fast runs and a safe

environment in which to make them. The April events there will have taken place before you read this, but Autocross 3 will be held on Sunday, May 16 at Pennington Field (the HEB ISD football stadium) in Bedford. And if you would like to try a Time Trial on a real racetrack, mark your calendar for Sunday, May 23, which will be Time Trial 3 at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, TX, and will run on the 1.7-mile course. Hope to see you at one or both!

Tech Corner by Ed Mullenix

Deal or NO Deal?

T

he club racing season is ‘fixinta” start so last week the Prez brought his 944 Turbo club racer into the shop for its annual gremlinectomy. Sure enough, there were some gremlins lurking about. A recalcitrant DME relay that only turned on the fuel pump when it felt like it. All of the ABS wheel speed sensors had grown fur (iron dust abraded from the brake discs attracted to the permanent magnet in the sensor) and caused the ABS to do weird things. But new spark plugs, fuel filter, and reciting the appropriate pre-season incantation didn’t resolve an engine misfire.

OEM Porsche distributor caps and rotors are made from a material called “Bakelite.” It is a thermo-setting plastic that once baked in the mold of a cap or rotor, won’t melt. Although it will burn if you get it hot enough. It is the perfect material for distributor caps and rotors. A drawback to Bakelite is that it is brittle. Drop a distributor cap and it’s done! Bakelite is also more expensive to produce than other plastics that can be melted and formed into whatever. This brings us back to our story. Several aftermarket manufacturers, including Bosch, produce ignition caps and rotors that are not Bakelite and therefore, are less expensive. A bargain-brand non-Bakelite rotor was installed in #47 with the ensuing consequences. The misadventure didn’t result in a DNF but could have. You could also have the same experience on a long highway trip. Every year, my bride and I take one of our “Stuttgart” wonders to Wisconsin, a “mere 19 hours in the saddle” each way! I will buy aftermarket things like fan belts, spark plugs, and air filters but I am selective about the quality (don’t go to Manny, Moe, and Jack!). My ’82 Targa does indeed have a genuine Porsche rotor. “Nuff said”! Ed 28

The ignition o-scope revealed that almost no spark was reaching the spark plugs. Mike said that he had the cap and ignition rotor replaced two seasons Ill-fated rotor, new aftermarket ago. Usually a cap and rotor, genuine Porsche rotor rotor are good for several seasons. Hmmm? I pulled off the cap and there it was, or rather, was not! The brass end of the rotor and most or the plastic end was gone! At racing speeds, the coil directs spark thru the rotor and cap 12,000 times every minute. A 30 minute race, the coil fired 360,000 times. During a five race season, that rascal has fired 1.8 million times. Needless to say, a lot of heat is developed in the distributor cap and there is almost no venting so things like the rotor get really hot.
