Drifting: What a Year for Events! By John Hamilton, Region President

W

hat a year for events! Here is a sample of what’s been happening and what’s coming up: • Autocross (“AX”) is going strong and has sold out at the first events held at Dallas Raceway in Crandall • Drivers’ Education (“DE”) has sold out for the Green and Blue run groups, and we are having two ONE-DAY events: Saturday, June 1 and Saturday, November 9 • Three regions have pooled their resources and have rented the Circuit Of The Americas (COTA) in Austin for a combination Club Race and DE on May 10, 11 and 12 -- SOLD OUT (but you can be a spectator for free!) • Our annual “May at Mayo’s” car show and dinner (fun for the WHOLE FAMILY) is just around the corner on Saturday, May 4 at 5 p.m. (sign up fast if you haven’t already!) NOT sold out! • Father’s Day Picnic is being reimagined as the Summer Kick-Off Picnic! • Sunday Drives are tons of fun! • And the annual Porsche Parade in Traverse City, Michigan is June 23 through 29, with at least 22 Porsches from your Maverick Region headed there!

2 May

And there will be plenty more, I’m sure! So take a look at our calendar (the best way is on-line on our home page, mav.pca.org) and see what works for you. I hope you can join us at one of these fun events.

Mav of the Month Our top contributors just keep ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor on contributing, 1235 William D. Tate Ave and this month is no Grapevine, TX 76051 exception. When we agreed to rent COTA the volunteers. Panic set in for a for a combination Club Race and moment, but then our volunteer DE, that all sounded pretty simple of volunteers JUMPED at the (we just needed money). But then chance to be the volunteer lead. the real work began, and the call Yes: this is the SAME person who went out for volunteers AND for a told me she was going to take a volunteer to recruit and head-up break and not be so involved (ha!). But whenever a need arises, she is there to support our club and drive a successful event, program, public relations, whatever. So THANK YOU, Linda Bambina, for once again rising to the occasion and jumping in with both feet to make COTA the success that I’m sure it will be with your leadership. Enjoy your gift card to the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine. Well-deserved, along with the thanks from all the members of the Maverick Region for all the things you do.

Carey On...

By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor

A

s I write this, it is still snowing in parts of the US, but here in north Texas, spring has seriously taken hold. The first weekend in May is typically an active one for the Maverick Region, and this year is no exception. Our annual May at Mayo’s Concours and dinner last year fell on May 5, so it wasn’t much of a stretch to rename it Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s, with (what else) a Mexican theme. And that worked so well, we’re doing it again, although the actual date is Saturday, May 4. This year’s Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s will feature a Peoples’ Choice Concours d’Elegance at 5pm (no entry fee, so bring your beauty out and show

it off!), followed by dinner at 6 (catered by On The Border) and awards presentation at 7. Admission is $25, and kids 12 and under can eat for free. Soft drinks, beer, and margaritas are included. The next day, Sunday, May 5, heralds the return of a very popular Sunday Drive that Tourmeister John Harvey put on in 2011 -- a tour to Rancho Sereno. This is a reining horse ranch, as well as a small inn, a few miles south of the Red River. Owners Lisa and Mike Maberry are former Maverick Region members, and gave us a friendly welcome on our last visit. This year’s Drive will feature the twisty roads, elevation changes, and rural scenery that you are familiar with if you have participated in Sunday Drives in the past, and this one will culminate in barbecue

and beverages on the patio of the Pine Room. It will be quite a scenic tour, both the drive and the ranch, so please join us. A week later, May 10-12, is Mother’s Day weekend, and also the inaugural Carrera of the Americas PCA Club Race and Drivers’ Education, jointly hosted by Hill Country, Lone Star, and Maverick Regions. These driving events, held at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) near Austin, sold out minutes after registration opened, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come down to watch. If you have not been to COTA in person, this is an excellent chance to see it without spending a lot (there is no charge for spectating), and also to see what PCA’s Club Racing and Drivers’ Education events are all about. Read on!

Maverick Minutes: April Board Meeting By Lori Mauthe, Drivers’ Education Chair

A

t 7:00 pm Region President John Hamilton called the meeting to order, and recognized guest Les Linenschmidt in attendance. Region Secretary Renee Farinella could not attend, so Lori Mauthe filled in for her to take down the meeting minutes. Drivers’ Ed Equipment Manager Luke Edson shared that many radios are in need of replacement, or at least battery replacement. Lori Mauthe, DE Series Chair, confirmed that there was an approved budget item to cover these costs. Luke has also volunteered to provide equipment support for the PCA Club Race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in May. Social Chair Tracy Robertson noted that she attended the Autocross Academy and had a wonderful time, and expressed her appreciation for the great work of the many volunteers who made this event possible. The next social event is May at Mayo’s on Saturday, May 4. The theme is the same as last year - Cinco de Mayo - with the People’s Choice Concours d’ Elegance and great food. Tracy requested an update on obtaining a club credit card for the expenditures to support the social events, and John Hamilton will follow up. Tracy is working on the June Father’s Day event, and is looking to expand attendance by remaking it into the Summer Kick-Off Picnic on Saturday, June 8. Consideration for a venue includes Cedar Hill State Park, with a possible Rally leading to the park prior to the picnic itself. Admission per car to the park is $7, and to cover to pavilion and food costs she proposed $15 per adult 6 May

plus a pot-luck dish to share. New members, the Ferenholts, have a property near McKinney for an event tentatively called “Cars and Cattle” in the fall, with possbile dates being either September 28 or October 5. They have 8 head of cattle and a donkey to provide great photo opportunities for the non-Concours d’Elegance. Slipstream Editor Carey Spreen reported that the latest issue was mailed Tuesday morning April 2. Putting on his Rally hat, Carey announced that he will be working with Don Sebert to coordinate a Rally for later this year, most likely the aforementioned rally to the Summer Kick-Off Picnic. Public Relations Chair Linda Bambina is getting a list of those Maverick members registered for the Parade this June, and will plan a pre-Parade gathering the end of May or start of June. The Car Show committee met, and they are checking on a venue for a future event. Wearing her “worker wrangler” hat, she is also responsible for getting volunteers from Maverick Region to support the COTA Club Race over Mother’s Day weekend. She asks that any Maverick Region members who are willing and able to volunteer to work one of several available positions at the Club Race to contact her at bina42@tx.rr.com. Jack Griffin, Concours co-chair, is all set for the People’s Choice Concours at the May at Mayo’s event on May 4. On Saturday, June 2, we are looking forward to the car show at the Cooper Aerobic Center, where the Porsche Club will have its usual spot in the shade, and the construction is finally completed, so the restaurant will be open. The timeframe is an hour earlier this year, from 11am to 3pm.

April 3, 2013 Concours Co-Chair Frank Briggs asked about the certificates for the class winners at the May at Mayo’s event, and will research this with Christy Payne. Frank will take care of printing the ballots and placards. Don Sebert, potential Rally Coach, has volunteered with Carey Spreen and George Luxbacher to assist in putting on a Rally or two this year. They want to have the Rallies coincide with a social event such as a picnic as the destination, or with the ever-popular Sunday Drives. Don also suggested a Saturday evening event at Devil’s Bowl dirt track in Mesquite, and will coordinate with Tracy. Vice President Gareth Maurice reported that the Autocross Academy was a lot of fun. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey discussed the upcoming events. The April 21 Sunday Drive will end at the Driver Education event at Motorsport Ranch for parade laps and optional lunch. Sunday, May 5 is the drive to Rancho Sereno with a BBQ dinner after the tour. Lori Mauthe reported that the March DE went well, and appears to be a break-even budget success. The April event at Motorsport Ranch is full for green and blue students. The Charity Parade laps will benefit Komen for a Cure, with guests from Big Brothers Big Sisters on Saturday, along with the Sunday Drive gang. Autocross and Time Trial Chair Travis Howard received a round of applause for having two consecutive sold-out events. He reports that the alternator in the Truxster is fixed. The April 14 event is the second of the Autocross series at Dallas Raceway in Crandall. The new timing equipment is still being tested and results look great.

James and Wendy Shoffit reported on the recentlychristened Carrera of the Americas Club Race planning at COTA, May 9 – 12. Registration for the Club Race entries sold out in 12 minutes, and the garage registration sold out in one minute! The accompanying Drivers’ Education registration is anticipated to sell out quickly as well. There will be a test and tune day on Thursday as an option for confirmed participants. Wendy is requesting assistance for the registration on Thursday starting at 3pm and will coordinate with Linda Bambina. On-site event payments were approved to be processed through the Maverick Region PayPal account. Park Place Motorsports is the sponsor for the Club Race and Driver Education aspects of the event. Wendy also reported that the email went out to the membership regarding this year’s Membership Directories for those who wish to opt out. Directories will be sold on the clubregistration.net site. John Hamilton presented the Mav of the Month award to Linda Bambina as “Wrangler of the Month,” for being the volunteer coordinator for Maverick Region’s contribution to the COTA event. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.

Destination Restoration: Introducing Mel By Ash Seidl-Staley

T

he story behind this car is an overwhelming emotion-filled roller coaster for me and my family. Personally it has brought me tears, laughs, pride, uncertainty, and hope. But more than anything, it has given me a purpose in life: to follow in my Grandfather’s footsteps, trying to achieve a dignified spot in the world that is the Porsche Club of America. In 1997 my Grandfather, Delbert Wayne Milleson, nicknamed Mel by my German relatives, was working on this 911 when the jack slipped, sending the car crashing to the ground, which ended up taking his life. Since that terrible day, I have made it a goal of mine to do whatever it takes to get this car back on the road and eventually the track. For a first-time Porsche owner, this seems like a daunting task. But I have learned that with starting anything new, it’s best to take baby steps, so let’s start by listing what the car is. My research has yielded the fact that it is a true numbers-matching Euro 1972 911 Targa (T.V). It has the original 2.4L engine with the factory-sent Zenith 40 tin Carburetors in the bonnet, hooked up to the standard 915 transmission. A dusty stock brake package and mostly stock

Mel’s slant-nose 911 conversion 8 May

suspension components, minus the sport Bilstien rear shocks, dominate the undercarriage. As you can see from the pictures, the numbers matching only goes so far, and there is plenty of my grandfather’s infamous customization going on.

First time under the boot Back in the mid to late 80s, the fad was the converting of 911s and 930s to a sort of 934/935 look. Thanks to the domination on the track by the behemoths like the prestigious Moby Dick and the genius that is the Porsche- Kremer team, PCAers all over wanted their own 935. Slant nose packages became widespread, to the point where Porsche even started sending cars with these packages off the line to meet the fad’s demand. But, never wanting to just settle with what everyone else gets, my Grandfather upgraded the package, and sprang for the Kevlar bumpers, flares, and slantnose fenders. With the help of my Great Uncle Fritz, he cut up the old body of the 911 and hand-grafted the Kevlar kit with lots of bondo and fiberglass. He hand-sanded and smoothed out the seams with only time, a level, and a good eye.

Photos by the Author The car’s PCA history is also evident in the stickers that pepper the rear glass and side windows. The highlights include a Germany Region PCA sticker and a RUF Technology sticker on the glove box. The RUF sticker has a story all on its own which includes meeting Alois Ruf himself! I have described what it is. Now for the bad news: what it is not. It is not drivable, and though the engine rotates and only has 56K miles on it, it will need to be cleaned and resealed with new gaskets. While inside I plan on checking off the items in the “101 projects for your 911” category, including upgrading head studs, chain tensioners, and valves. The body kit itself, though a little scratched up, is immaculate; it’s the chassis that is the problem. Since

Lovely ladies! the car is a pre-’76, no sheet metal has been galvanized. Consequently, I have rust stretching from the engine bay to the brake master cylinder, all along the driver’s side of the car. Whether or not I can save this car is still undetermined, but I am ready and willing to try. Would you like to have your restoration project featured in an upcoming issue of Slipstream? If so, contact me at ashseidlstaley@gmail.com so that we can put together an article about it.

Robyn Howard, Driving School Chair, along with her husband Travis, who is our Autocross/Time Trial Chair, assembled a great field of volunteers who made this event possible. I am new to the club so I am sorry I can’t name the many people who worked so hard to organize the event, set up cones, nor the many instructors who helped

The author at speed in his 968 10 May

In the morning drivers’ meeting, they let it be known that just about anyone can spin out when pushing these cars to their limit. They said if you spin out well enough, you might expect a big round of applause! In other words, no one is judged at these events for trying to push a little too hard. Even the best drivers were Wendy Shoffit pointing the way for once out here for Region Social Chair Tracy Robertson the first time.

The day started much like any autocross would, with a tech inspection of the vehicles. In this case, the instructors went over the cars with the drivers explaining what the tech inspectors are actually looking for to help make sure that all autocross events are safe for drivers, spectators, and the cars. Next, a group meeting was held to explain the basics of autocross and to explain what could be expected as the day progressed. The drivers were then broken into smaller groups with their instructors to go over various exercises to help build skills and confidence. One group started working on slalom courses that are found in all autocross courses. Then the groups moved on to an area where braking methods were taught so drivers know the limits of the cars’ brakes and how to use them properly. The final group worked on the skid pad, a group of cones set up to form two different rings for the cars to drive around. This was a great way to learn how to push the car to get the most from the suspension and tires without losing traction and spinning out all together.

After a lunch break, everyone gathered together for the afternoon session. That’s when the real fun began. The volunteers had moved the cones to form a typical autocross course, which could be set up in just about any wide open parking lot, provided they don’t

March 24 was the date for this year’s school. It was a brisk Sunday morning with what felt like 25 mph winds. I’m told that this year the school was moved to a later date because of too much winter weather in previous years. The cold weather was not enough to keep the soldout crowd from making their way to Dallas Speedway in Crandall, Texas for the event. The parking lot was filled with not only Porsches but, as with all of the Maverick Region’s autocross events, other cars were present including several Mazdas, Vettes, Nissans and more.

f you are a Porsche owner and you have never been to a PCA autocross event, you are really missing a lot of fun. These cars are made to be driven, and autocross is a safe way to test the limits of the car and driver. A great way to get started is the Maverick Region’s annual Autocross Academy.

Jeff Herrmann keeping the grid moving during the autocross runs have light poles. Autocross is an event that has the driver racing the clock, with only one car at a time on the course. The cones don’t hurt the cars, and with only one car at a time it seems much safer than the highway drive to the venue. Our afternoon session started with the instructors driving the course with students along for

Volunteer workers setting up the skidpad exercise women, were running as fast as the men and having just as much fun. Autocross school is a great way to get started, but if you missed this year’s school, don’t let that keep you away. Tanya and I started at the end of last season, and at every autocross we have attended there have always been instructors ready to help get you started. Once you get your first set of runs in, you can ride along with one of the experienced drivers to get the feel. They are more than willing to ride with you, as well to make sure you have a fun and safe experience.

After all, “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

my short “speedster” windshield, Rick and Lori got to feel the wind in their hair, and teeth! It was a cool brisk morning, and my engine was making lots of horsepower as we drove to the beach, to a fort, and then to town. Along the way we waved at many folks anticipating the parade of lovely automobiles, one of a kind, just like me.

After having every nook, cranny, nut and bolt cleaned, shined and polished, I was deemed READY. I was loaded into a trailer with my sibling, Stonegray, a 1958 356 Speedster, and we were transported to Amelia Island. On Friday morning before the Concours, Rick and Lori drove me to the host hotel, the Ritz Carlton. WOW, amazing cars everywhere. I received a special invitation to participate in the Marque tour; only 25 other cars were included. We lined up in the queue between Ferraris and Mercedes. I was reunited with Peter, who sat in the driver seat and told the story of my beginning in the factory during an interview with Bill Warner, the president and founder of the event. Then we took off on the tour. With 16 May

The Group at The Gala (see text) locals came out to greet us. I got to park in the shade while many came to admire, hear my story, and take pictures. Rick prepared my “baby book,” which contained pictures of me in all of my configurations, and the notes from the factory, about my transformation from a stock cabriolet, and all the parts and pieces involved. Friday afternoon I spent tucked safely away in my trailer. The gang went back to the Ritz to attend

the special panel presentation in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the 911. Peter Schutz was joined on a panel with many great 911 fans from the past and present, including Bobby Rahal, Hurley Haywood, Vic Elford, Patrick Long, Jack Atkinson, Jeff Zwart, Alwin Springer, and Harm Lagaaij. The attendees were lined up for an hour prior to the start in anticipation. The event was a sell-out! Bob Varsha was the host moderator as each told their story, starting with Peter’s account of the day he told Professor Helmut Bott that the 911 was not going to be discontinued. He recalled walking into Helmut’s office and seeing a chart on the wall with chronological bars showing the anticipated development of each Porsche model, and the subsequent actions he took as a result. “The 911 had a little short bar that quit at 1981, which was just one year away. I went over to Mr. Bott’s office and I picked up a big black marker from his desk. I walked over to the chart and extended the bar from the 911 all the way to the end this chart, off the chart, on to his wall, behind his desk, around the corner and into the edge of the window. I looked at Helmut Bott and said ‘Mr. Bott, do we understand each other?’ He had a grin from ear to ear like he had just escaped a violent death. That was it -- the 911 still lives,” quipped

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Batteries By Cliff Blackshear

A

couple days ago I was talking with Al Zim, and conversation turned to how different things are these days, compared to what we would maybe call “Back When.” Interestingly, he brought up battery technology and how amazingly expensive it has become to replace a battery in today’s cars. I replied that that should be the subject of my next article. I then started thinking about replacing a battery in any Porsche built in the last 10 or so years. What I decided I wanted to write about

is the latest battery replacement procedure in the newest cars.

an interior light and access an emergency opening device.

They are AGM batteries. I could go on and on about why they are better batteries; however, I am thinking about what is done if one goes bad. I’ll use a Panamera as an example, while in warranty, requiring a lot of documentation.

Next, access the battery and be sure it has failed (voltage check) to confirm that something else is not causing the loss of battery power. A tester we have will be connected and it might say something like “recharge and test again.” If the battery is completely flat, it will simply indicate “replace.”

First of all, we have only seen a couple of these die. They were simply defective from new. They are too new to know how end-ofservice failure will be, but the work procedure will be the same. For starters, the rear lid will not open, as it is electronically activated. This results in our having to crawl part way over the rear seat to remove

So now we grab a new battery and make certain it is charged 100%, install it, and bring all the on-boards to life. Next, generate an analysis protocol, and attach that to a job that is generated in PPN (Porsche Partnership Network) -- two to three hundred pages of data. In this

log we can actually see the on-board systems starting to be shut down by an energy management system as the available voltage skews from the norm. Alternator output is logged as well. If the engine is shut off and the battery is failing, it will not restart, as the battery is below minimum amperage to run a starter. Next we have to tell the Gateway that a new battery has been installed, and we enter the battery serial number. If this is not completed, the system will register faults, as it knows something is different - the battery management system is not happy. Next, all control units are queried for faults and then erased. If a fault does not erase, we have to track down the issue. At this point, multiple control units have lost their adaptations. The cars adapt

to environment, driving style, mechanical conditions etc. etc. We cannot simply put a battery in and park the car. It needs to be driven a few miles. Fuel/ignition (DME) will start to adapt quickly; PDK as well. Many systems on the car do a selftest on start up, and a number of them require the car to be moving to complete the self-test -- things like speed signal, steering angle, and suspension movement. At this point, systems such as Lane Change Assist and Automatic Cruise Control can be quickly checked. Then it’s back to the shop for a recheck for faults in all systems.

information along to all microprocessors via a vehicle handover. The handover simply reintroduces all the units to one another. Unfortunately, that procedure will have introduced communication faults, as the units are rebooted in some cases. Now faults have to again be pulled up and erased. Weird, huh?

Once in a while the final checks will reveal amnesia somewhere. Bluetooth no longer works, and codes in the systems indicate that it does not have Bluetooth. In that case, we must recode, then pass that

All this is a long way from when I first replaced a couple of 36-amp 12-volt batteries in a 1972 911S.

I’ve witnessed one hybrid battery failure. Hey, it only weighs 150 lbs. Safety procedures alone are tedious. Replacing one under warranty really requires a lot of documentation. I could probably acquire the launch codes for a cruise missile with less paperwork.

Cheers!

Sunday Drive: Cavanaugh Flight Museum By Barbara Geiger

On a beautiful Sunday in March, 42 cars met in Garland. I was assigned group three -- the “Cows.”

There were ten cars in my group. Wahoo! Others wanted to go at my pace at the beginning. Instead of a lady friend, I enlisted the help of a car guy acquaintance, Rich (owner of a 1966 Rambler among other cars), to be my navigator.

We were loaned a Garmin GPS. Uh oh. What is this new thing? OK, we don’t need the paper instructions after all. We checked our lights and turn signals. Oops. Several miles into the drive we discovered that I didn’t check Photo by John Harvey

I

enjoy Sunday drives and looking at the scenery. In going on the Maverick Sunday Drives I found that I could not see much as I was busy shifting and trying to keep up with the ones in front of me. Since I have a 1987 911, I like to baby it and not drive very fast. I complained to the leaders and others. Unlike other groups, I got an answer in the form of a question: Would I like to lead a group? I said sure, I can do that. A learning experience to be sure.

As I looked forward to hosting our March Happy Hour, I was hopeful for a large crowd, as Love & War in Texas is a great venue with excellent food and service. continued from page 17 from PCA), and Dario Franchitti – WOW!! Dario looked at me with sentimental eyes, and told Lori that his first Porsche was a 1989 Guards Red Speedster, same color as me. And then they came back to me for our next special invitation event. I’m in the Fashion Show! With a real life model, who we

made sure was of legal age! She was stunning, and Rick was quite happy to have her join him. I was one of six asked to join in the History of Automobiles and Fashion for the past 100 years. When Rick drove me up to the front of the lawn-stage, somehow Bill Warner had manPeter Schutz recounting Speedy’s aged to story for the crowd find Peter We got back to our place on Schutz, so the lawn, and Rick’s pager for that Peter could tell Stonegray was ringing. He scurried the story of how I came to be, in his own back to find out that he had won second place in class – and not words. What a great just among Porsches of that era, way to honor Peter but all entries in the class. He and and the 50th AnNeil drove onto the lawn stage niversary of the 911.

All afternoon, Lori and Rick greeted folks who came by to see me, and told my story. Many had seen or read Neil Goldberg and Rick Riley: about me, and winning smiles in Stonegray thanked us for being at the together and accepted the beautiful show. I got several trophy. Rick thanked Bill Warner more invitations to for postponing Stonegray’s invitaother events; however, tion to this year so that Neil could my next outing is to participate. Smiles all around!
