Drifting: When is a Porsche . . . Part II By John Hamilton, Region President

M

y March “Drifting” article focused on some of our legacy Porsches like the 928s, 356s, 914s, 968s, etc. But we must also include the newer members of this great big Porsche family, namely the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera (soon to be joined by the Macan SUV and the 918 uber-car!). Porsche has been working on expanding its product line-up to cover the life-cycles of its owners, while still maintaining that special Porsche feel (luxury, sportiness, exclusivity) in each car. And by the way, Porsche sold just over 42,000 new Porsches in the U.S. last year – roughly what GM sells in 4 days! Many Porsche owners like me have gone through the cycle: single-no-kids; married-with-kids; married with empty nest, and have modified their automobile needs (and wants) along the way. Some of our members have been fortunate enough to solve those challenges with multiple Porsches: a sports car and a Cayenne or Panamera (must be nice!). One nice thing about having a Porsche Panamera or Cayenne, is that it doesn’t have to cramp your driving style one bit. Last month I participated in the pre-drive for one of our Sunday drives. Of the ten cars checking the route, TWO were Panameras! And check out our Autocrossers: we have all types and have national award-winners Myra and Jerry Sutton who compete in their Cayenne! Plus we’ve had Panameras and Cayennes at our Drivers’ Education events, too. So which Porsche you drive doesn’t matter. You’re a member of the largest single-marque car club in the world, and as such, you’re just getting a little more enjoyment out of life!

John enjoys DEs, Happy Hours, the Porsche Parade, and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab which is how it got into his blood. POSITION

Gareth still remembers the cover of the car magazine that drew him into a lifetime of loving cars. He spent many afternoons riding his bike as a young kid to the local newsstand to buy and read everything he could. He now owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys driving it in wonderful Texas!

T

he events are cranking up. The Club Race at COTA runs the first weekend in May. If you have never been to this world-class race track, this is your opportunity to get in for free! Remember to RSVP for May at Mayo’s, to be held on May 10 -- there will be good food, friendly folks, and lots of cars being shown. The Autocross Academy at Pennington Field on May 18 is a great way to safely learn what your Porsche does at its limits. The Sunday Drive to Grandpappy Point has been pushed back to June -- watch mav.pca. org for updates. Drivers’ Ed Chair Chris Tabor is looking for an Equipment Manager. You can contact Chris at de@mavpca. org. Also, please welcome two new advertisers to Slipstream: Dallas Fort Worth Clear Bra, and Tomato Werks Detailing. We are delighted to have their support, so please consider using their services! Read on!

Gimme a Minute: April Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began at 7:05 pm. Region President John Hamilton welcomed returning guest Richard Solomon and new member Javier Guillermo and friend Svetlana Trukshamania. John attended the Zone 5 meeting in San Antonio. Maverick Region was mentioned several times very positively. PCA is strong and continues to grow. It remains the largest single marque car club in the world! Because of its financial strength, we will be getting a region rebate from PCA of about $7 per member. He also again mentioned the Street Survival Course, with which VP Gareth Maurice is interested in helping. One possible venue is Texas Motor Speedway, which John will investigate. John reported for Editor Carey Spreen. Slipstream was delivered to our mailing house on time, but was short by eight advertiser copies. He has increased the print copy count to 1650 to keep up with expanding membership. Good problem to have. Treasurer Jim Falgout reported that the April DE financial numbers are very strong. We are up to around $80K total in the bank. Jim declared, “We’ve got money!” Tyler-based member Richard Solomon, despite being new, has already been working hard with Linda Bambina and his friend, Billy Hibbs, to organize an event in Tyler. Billy has a huge car barn and is happy to show it off. They are working it as a charity event to benefit the Hope Shelter and Billy’s charity. Currently, Sunday, Sept 28 is the best weekend available. More 6 May

details to be announced, including a Sunday Drive to get there. Concours Chair Andy Kay is writing an article about car Spring Cleaning. He’s also working on a Show & Shine Concours at our annual May at Mayo’s event on Saturday, May 10. He will have great awards for winners and is hoping to have Griot’s products to raffle. He is working diligently to grow and elevate the Concours d’Elegance program for more serious interested parties. He has set up a tech session at Jack Griffin’s garage on May 18. Autos in the Park at the Cooper Aerobics Center is set for June 1, where he will have a lightly judged event. He is also working on another judged event, possibly in October. Social Chair Tracy Robertson is working on the May at Mayo’s event and will help promote the improved Concours awards. Sign up for M@M through the link on the website calendar. She mentioned that she uses Slipstream distribution numbers to negotiate catering discounts. She has booked Hackberry Creek Country Club, where our monthly board meetings take place, for the New/All Member Party next year. She would like to continue promoting events to other Porsche special interest groups to increase event participation. She is working on a location for the November 22 Founder’s Day (new date). We all discussed entertainment options. VP Gareth Maurice said all insurance requirements were done and he’s working on getting ads completed for Slipstream. Drivers’ Education/Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit said that registrations looked good for the April DE event. To continue improving the DE program, Jim

April 2, 2014 Buckley wants to purchase two data acquisition systems which we would rent to interested entrants for $20 per run set. It was approved for $1600. The COTA event is currently in the black, although we are still trying to increase registrations for the Club Race. In late-breaking news, DE Chair Chris Tabor announced that he needs a new DE Equipment Manager. If you are interested, contact Chris at de@mavpca.org. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey said that despite bad weather, we had 46 cars total in four groups for the Chicken Run, and most people stayed for dinner at Babe’s. Due to increased popularity of the “pre-drives,” he will look to have insurance coverage. He is considering asking for drivers to pre-register for events. He has combined several lists of interested Sunday drivers into one that he will use. The next drive is on Saturday, April 26, to Muenster for Germanfest. Later in the year, there will be a Sunday Drive to Lake Texoma and The Point Bar & Grill. He is working on the date, as well as details for the trip to Tyler. Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich reported another record month. We are up to 1435 primary members and 2361 total for March. They are continuing to contact people to renew memberships each month and find that email works best. Autocross/Time Trial Chair Travis Howard is using an event-free April to work on the Truxster, our driving event support vehicle. May 18 is the Autocross School at Pennington Field in Bedford, and a week later (May 25) is Autocross #2, also at Pennington. He will officially be Gridmaster at the COTA Club

Race/DE. There was a discussion about again doing a Ladies Only Autocross school. Look for a survey out soon, or contact Travis to show your support. PR Chair Linda Bambina continues to work on perfecting the Slipstream process with all involved. She reported that we have over 25 Mavericks going to Parade this year (registrations were over 850). To show region unity, she is suggesting to attendees that they buy Maverick Region windbreakers from the Goodie Store to wear at the Welcome Party. She’s working on details for the pre-Parade party in May at Spring Creek BBQ. Rally Chair Don Sebert has scheduled a gimmick rally in July and will announce details later. Right now he’s trying to wrangle up volunteers for COTA. The registration website is hard for new comers to use, so he’s trying to make the process easier for those interested. John finished the meeting by announcing the Maverick of the Month: Jerry deFeo, for his many years of doing the Trivia Contest for the website and for Slipstream! Congratulations Jerry, and thanks for all your hard work! The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm.

he first Autocross of the year, held the first Sunday in March, ended up being very wet, but the entrants still got some runs in before it was called because of the weather. April had no competitive driving events, but Autocross/Time Trial Chair Travis Howard and Autocross School Coordinator Robyn Howard are making up for it in May. May 18 is our annual Autocross Academy, held at the large parking lot at Pennington Field in Bedford, where you get an instructor to show you what Autocrossing is all about, and how to get the most out of your Porsche. The next Sunday, May 25, is our second Autocross of the year, also held at Pennington Field, so you can put those freshly-learned autocrossing skills to work. A couple of weeks later is our first Time Trial/ Autocross weekend (June 7-8) at Mineral Wells Airport, aka The MineralRing. Time Trials are higherspeed events (you get into fourth gear) and the Autocrosses held there have long courses for a lot of seat time. Come on out and see what your Porsche can really do!

Destination Restoration: Darrell Jones’ ‘72 By Ash Seidl-Staley

I

t has been well over a year since I introduced the column “Destination Restoration” to our prestigious and award-winning newsletter, Slipstream. My original intention for the column was to create a space where all Mavericks could flaunt pictures of their gorgeously finished restoration projects, or at the very least, a space where they could share a heartfelt story about their Porsche so that everyone in the Region would know that they are truly Porsche enthusiasts. I am happy to report that I finally received a submission for a Destination Restoration article that wasn’t about one of my cars! (Must have been the spiffy advertisement.). Darrell Jones, a member of the Maverick Region for 15 years, sent me the three-yearplus restoration story on his 1972 911T, and since I have had it in my inbox, I haven’t been able to wait to submit the story on down the road to publishing. Darrell’s 911 story begins in 1982, when he and his wife found a killer deal on a 1972 911T. After the purchase, Darrell rebuilt the engine and drove it daily

The thirteen years of driving was amazing, but what he really wanted to do was conduct a complete Grade-A scale restoration on the vehicle. Due to insufficient time to begin the intense project, though, Darrell put the 911 in storage. While the 911 slept, Darrell continued work on other car projects, something he has been doing since a young age. According

to Darrell, he was “neglected as a child;” he wasn’t told what a wrench was until he was four, and wasn’t allowed to drive by himself until he was at least six! All joking aside, working on and driving cars has been an important part of his life from the very beginning. The fact that Darrell served in the United States Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer for 27 years only added to his extensive knowledge in mechanics. In September of 2011, after 16 years of hibernation, Darrell decided it was time to restore his 911. His first action was to visit our good friends at Zims Autotechnik in Bedford, TX. There he sat down with Al Zim and discussed everything he would need to do in order to accomplish the vision and goals he had set for the car. Darrell really wanted to keep the ‘72 completely original; that choice added to the time the rebuild would take, and required a considerable amount of machine work on the engine components, but man, was the end result worth it! With his strict plan in place, and with the reassurance that Zims had his back in the event that something were to go wrong, Darrell set out on the tedious and daunting task that is a Porsche Restoration.

The finished car, loaded up for final inspection at Zims. “One of the most important things to remember when rebuilding any car,” Darrell says, “is to establish a schedule of events, and make a complete inventory of everything that is going to be reused, or replaced.” Darrell did everything right: he took gobs of pictures, he checked for rust on the bare tub, he cleaned the oil tank, fuel tank, fuel lines, and he inspected/ replaced all suspension and braking components. As far as the engine goes, the magnesium case used on his MFI 2.4 T engine had warped a whole .005 in. over 40 years. To get it back into spec, it had to be completely torn down and line bored; Zims took care of this, as well as rebuilding and cleaning the heads and cam towers. When Darrell finally received all of his engine components back from the shop, he initiated the next step in the build: reassembling the engine.

Ready to roll! As any mechanic knows, or rather should know, the first step in rebuilding an engine is to make sure all of the pieces are clean so they will fit properly when bolted together. “Clean it, clean it again, check to see if it’s dirty, and then clean it again” was the mantra Darrell followed during the entire build process. Weeks went by, months went by, and after each work day, the car was getting closer and closer to completion. When he finally finished his rebuild, the last step he took was to put the car on a flatbed truck and send it off to Zims for a final inspection. Darrell admits that this might be an unnecessary added cost to some, but he would rather be safe and have his worked double-checked than to destroy the fruit of all of his efforts after the first turn of the key. After a few minor changes and adjustments, Darrell received the keys to his car and has never been happier. Darrell has had many cars during his life. He has built four street rods and three custom cars, one of which, a ‘37 Dodge with a 392 Hemi, posted a blistering 193 mph top speed at a Formula 1 Track near Madrid, Spain! But as many of us Mavericks know, there is just something about a Porsche that grabs your attention and holds on for life. Darrell and his wife are firmly in the Porsche grip and are planning on driving their ‘72 across the United States. Sightseeing in an early 911, is there anything better? I think not!

Commentary from the Left Seat: The Great Texas BBQ Tour, Part II By Robert L. Turner Editor’s Note: Rob Turner is author of The Driver, a Marc Lange series of novels (available through Amazon).

S

o last month, we had made if out of our driveway and down my least favorite stretch of interstate highway, otherwise know as I-35. Our mission -- to sample some of the best BBQ in Texas (and probably in the world for that matter . . . ), check out some music at South by Southwest (SXSW), and of course drive the Cayman S. Not too shabby ingredients for a road trip if you ask me. Our first taste was before us and we had built up quite an appetite as we rolled into Taylor by 2:30, easily finding Louie Mueller BBQ (206 W. 2nd St Taylor, TX 76574 / 512-352-6506 / www.louiemuellerbbq.com). Many consider this to be the mecca of BBQ in our great state. Walking in the place sure felt like it -- the smell of smoking meat was everywhere. The walls were covered in dark brown soot; the business cards tacked to the wall had turned brown and brittle from years in a smoke house. Even though we arrived late, we stood in line twenty minutes to get the Q. We ordered one pound of brisket and two pounds of pork ribs and three sides. What were we thinking? It was almost a case of our eyes being bigger than our stomachs, but you know what? We ate all of it. The meat was moist with a deep pink ring of smoke surrounding the edges. The fat was rendered nicely and it had a deep salt and pepper crust on it. The ribs were tender against the bone and got chewy at the tips -- just how I like them. We were transported 14 May

to BBQ nirvana. We ate ourselves into a BBQ coma and a food baby. Just ask your nearest teenager if you do not know what that means . . . SXSW started calling to us from twenty-nine miles away. There are so many venues to go to, you could close your eyes and throw a dart at a street map, easily hitting two or three places crammed with bands. My friend, Kelly Knapper, opened a food truck called Rainey Street. Think tacos, but with a kick-ass rock and roll attitude. He had bands stacked up to play into the evening.

You’ve seen it. It’s that smug hipster glance that says “We’re saving the world, one gallon of gas at a time.” But, since Nick and I were in a Porsche, we were decadent. So to get there, we went back roads. Smart old Austin “hand” that I am, I figured my knowledge of the back way in to downtown would come in handy. Problem was, all the other old Austin “hands” figured the same thing. To add insult to injury, all my secret parking spaces were taken. Hmmm . . . maybe I’ve been away from Austin too long. Note to self: find new back way to downtown and add a few new secret parking spots. We loved Kelly’s new food truck and stayed to hear two bands, but we wanted more so we walked about twelve blocks to the heart of SXSW, the Sixth Street/Warehouse district. Nick had never been to Sixth Street before and

was in for a shock. The street was closed to vehicular traffic and was filled with thousands of people, some just hanging out, but mostly hundreds in lines, all waiting to get into clubs to hear music. For those not wanting to stand in line, there were street musicians galore, from solo acts with an acoustic guitar, to full bands with batterypowered portable amps. There was something for everybody. We roamed for hours and listened to several bands. I wanted to go hear one of my favorite British bands, The Kaiser Chiefs, but was told there was no way we could get in. Fair enough, so we called it a night. Score: one BBQ restaurant, four tacos and about six bands. Not bad for a first day. Friday morning, it was cloudy and humid, courtesy of early Spring in Central Texas. Nick and I decided we didn’t care. The February issue of Texas Monthly featured a story about two BBQ pit masters who had recently opened up new BBQ joints in Austin. One was said to have brisket that was magical -- sweet and spicy at the same time. So tender, if you cut a big bite, it fell off your fork. People stood in line, waiting up to three hours for a taste of the smoky meat. There were whispers that this new kid was special, otherworldly even, the Q was that good. Of course we had to go. We pointed the Cayman towards Franklin BBQ (900 E. 11th St Austin, TX 78702 / 512-653-1187 / www.franklinbarbeque.com) to see and taste for ourselves. We got there at 10:30 and already the line snaked down the hill through the parking lot. People had started lining up at 8:30. As it got closer to opening time, an employee came out with the unenviable task of

finding the “Last Man Standing”: the last person in line who was assured of getting ribs. The rest of us would at least get brisket, but ribs? Maybe. Some people decided to leave, and the line closed up. We were hopeful. The skies opened up for twenty seconds, a few more left, and the line closed up some more. We snaked forwards slowly, making friends with those around us, becoming a BBQ community. We waited two hours to get to the front of the line. This time we ordered a brisket plate and a rib plate with coleslaw and beans. We ended up sitting with the folks that we’d been in line with, a high school teacher and her husband, also on Spring Break. We all laughed that we’d waited in line for well over two hours for BBQ. We took that first bite. It got real quiet at our table. Some serious BBQ consumption took over. Somehow two hours didn’t seem that long. There are those who will argue with me, but the brisket from Franklin is the best ever. In fact, I will say it right here and now, best brisket on the planet. The meat had a deep rouge ring of smoke and was seasoned by a master. The fat was rendered into an almost silky smooth consistency. It was perfect. We each ate the entire slice, even the fat. Every few seconds, I had to lick my fingers

just to make sure I did not miss anything. The ribs are my second favorite ever (my favorites are from Arthur Bryant’s in KC), but these are great. The first taste is sweet, then a bit of heat sneaks up and hits you, POW!, just when you don’t expect it. Incredible. If you go to Austin, go to Franklin BBQ. Yes, you’ll wait two to three hours. Trust me, it’s worth it.

their hipness meter might take a dip if they admitted it. Please note that their disapproving glances did not make me think, even for a second, of trading in the CS for a Prius, Leaf or Volt. I’m totally cool with my personal hip factor based on fifty-plus years of experience. And that hip factor includes a Porsche. Just ask my boys. They say I’m pretty cool for an old guy.

Funny thing about Austin: it’s truly hipster heaven. They’re everywhere, and even more so at SXSW. They aren’t hard to spot. Usually pierced and tatted with funky accessorizing, accompanied by too-hip cowboy boots or Converse All Stars without laces, of course oversized too-hip glasses and the ubiquitous Fedora hats. As we drove from one venue to another, Nick would say “Hipster Alert,” but got tired of saying it every five seconds.

We drove the CS to another friend’s food truck. Owned by long time Austin restaurateur Hoover Alexander, it’s called Hoover’s Chicken and Biscuits (2021 Manor Rd Austin, TX 78722 / www.hooverscooking.com) and is famous for its Chicken in a Waffle. Don’t ask, just order it, you’ll be happy. It’s also famous for its frozen Margaritas. Thank goodness they’re smallish. We listened to a couple of bands before heading out to have dinner with an old friend. My poor son had to endure hours of stories based on a thirty-year-plus friendship. Hope it didn’t give him any future ammo -- just saying.

Normally when I drive a Porsche through streets thickly packed with people, I get the occasional thumbs up or approving nod. Not so much in Austin. Now, if we’d been driving a Prius or were on an electric powered scooter, we’d have gotten those approving looks and nods. You’ve seen it. It’s that smug hipster glance that says “We’re saving the world, one gallon of gas at a time.” But, since Nick and I were in a Porsche, we were decadent. I’d venture, they secretly want one, but

Score: one BBQ restaurant, Chicken and Waffles, two bands, more Tex-Mex, and yet another food baby. Think I’m gaining weight! On that exhaust note, we’ll see you next month when we continue our adventure sampling BBQ, hearing great music and finally taking one epic drive home.

eafless trees gradually morphed into tall, green pine trees as we drove over 200 miles through the gently rolling land of East Texas toward Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, where there are many reminders of individuals who played a significant role in the state’s establishment and development. Six signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence have their final resting place in Nacogdoches.

Chris and Bob Morris at the head of the 356 lineup. was at the home of Randy and Joyce Legler, where we had an opportunity to browse through an amazing toy collection, which reflected a time gone by. Every square inch of the building was jam-packed with an astounding variety of old toys, all of which had been restored to their former glory.

The group parked on downtown Nacogdoches’ brick streets. Our group of a dozen 356s arrived there on Friday, March 14. Locals James and Becky Standley coordinated the weekend excursion with Tub Club Prez Jim and First Lady Lee Usher. James had a fabulous schedule of events planned during our stay at Nacogdoches, starting with a social hour supplied with snacks at the hotel. Yummy!

After the toy collection visit, James had seven different tours around the Nacogdoches area planned for us. Due to the inclement weather, however, our group chose to remain together and focus our sight-seeing experiences within the town itself. We first visited several gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University with James as our guide. He told us about the Texas-sized beavers that lived there, but, unfortunately, we never saw them. A number of us in the club are avid gardeners, so the numerous plants in these gardens were an intriguing sight.

The itinerary for the Saturday events James had planned for us was quite extensive. Our first stop

We left the gardens to go on the historic sites tour around town. James had provided everyone with a packet describing the various notable locations, and those of us not driving were able to read aloud detailed

information about the places we were observing, including their historical significance. I was struck by the impeccable condition of these old buildings, most of which had been built in the 1800s.

Nacogdoches was a journey to the past for the Tub Club members, and one that we, as Texans, can reflect upon with pride as we consider the founding fathers of our great state.

inally!!!! Finally!!!! Spring is here and the Sunday Drive team got to fly the coop. We’ve been busy scratching around planning our spring series of drives, and they’re finally here. Even though we had a huge rain storm the Saturday before the drive, and a lot of wind on Sunday morning, there was no stopping us as Sixty-Four participants took to the roads in south Dallas County.

Mike and Faye Parkhill take home a few leftovers. To finish off a great day of driving, we converged onto Babe’s Chicken House for an early dinner, “Family Style.” Platters of fried chicken, creamed corn, home style green beans, mashed potatoes, and homemade biscuits all shared by our Mav PCA family. It was great fun catching up with our Sunday Drive Pals and meeting many new members. Special thanks to our Sunday Drive team for making this such a great event: Brendan & Susan Eagan, Gareth & Elizabeth Maurice, Mark & Cyndee Ebeling, Botond Laszlo & Kristyn Starr, B.J. Harvey, and Gabe Sorrells.

After gathering everyone for a Drivers’ Briefing, we lined up and blew the “Myra Sutton Whistle” to kick off our drive. With four drive leaders and sweeps we split into groups of about 12 cars and were off to some of my favorite backroads: Hwy 916 to the south and west and Hwy 917 to the north and east. These roads were just made for Porsches, with many twisty switchbacks and some long, carving sweeps. If you weren’t there, you missed a good one!

When Babe’s says “Family Style,” they’re not kidding! 18 May

Elizabeth and Gareth Maurice caught redhanded with a “few” leftovers of their own.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: I Cannot Believe I Did That! By Cliff Blackshear

N

ot long ago all of my techs were enduring a very busy day with multiple Porsches in the workshop. A transporter showed up with seven or eight new cars on board. When new Porsches arrive from PAG, many buyers are already awaiting the arrival of their new baby, so we always have to integrate new arrivals into a busy work day. Each has to be prepped for delivery to the new owner: the car is in transport mode, PCM is shut down, top speed is limited to 25 mph, and thick shims are installed on the shafts of the front shocks to keep ground clearance at a higher level and avoid scraping spoilers, etc. One of the cars was delivered with the shims still on the shocks. Owner returns and is pretty sure the suspension has a problem. I drive the car a short distance, come back to the workshop and immediately look into one of the front fender wells. Pull the shock boot up and see the shims are still there. Arrrggghhhhh. Remove them and problem resolved. There is no technician on this planet that has not made a mistake, an oversight, an incorrect diagnosis, or slipped with a tool and damaged something. It Happens! Being open and honest when something like that occurs is the mark of a truly caring technician. Making certain it never happens again is the signature of a Meister. I know that I have had a few situations like that over the decades, and I beat myself up over it for a good while. Anyway, that incident led me to thinking about one of my biggest 20 May

blunders, and how that blunder led to a saying that I have. I finished replacing the clutch assembly on an early 80s 911 Carrera, let the car down off the lift, washed up, and hopped in for a test drive of the work I had done. Zinnnggg goes the starter when I twisted the key. I forgot to switch over the ring gear from old clutch release plate to the new one. The starter had nothing to engage when activated.

One guy mixed up the breather hoses on a 996 Turbo oil tank, which resulted in massive smoke plumes after starting the engine. Mind you I was a 10+ year veteran when that occurred. I had probably replaced 50 or more clutch assemblies. Cleaned, inspected everything, lubricated all the right moving parts, packed the throw out shaft needle bearings with great care. Adjusted the cable, actuated the clutch multiple times and rechecked the adjustment geometry. “!@##$%^&***” comes out of my brain as I realize what I have done. I took the engine/trans assembly back out and switched over the ring gear. So -- was it that someone came up and started talking to me, did I get called away to talk with an owner about something, or was it just brain fade? I don’t know, but things like this happen! “You are not a true Porsche technician until you have replaced a clutch and forgot to switch over the ring gear” became a saying I use from time to time. Then I usually follow that with, “. . . or

you do what you have just done.” This always flies out of my brain when I see a mistake in the shop by someone that I know would rather be stabbed in the eye than screw up a repair procedure. Someone I know that could, or is, developing into a Meister care giver. A couple weeks ago I posted an inquiry on PPN to all techs asking them to share things they are certainly not proud of, yet are honest enough to talk about. I broadened my inquiry to hopefully include the silly mistakes we can sometimes make. The responses were so fun to read. This request went out to all Porsche dealers in the U.S. and Canada. First response on the forum was from an old timer like me. He admitted to a mistake I have witnessed happen to the person that was training me in the early 70s. He had replaced transmission synchros in an early 915 gearbox. When he re-installed the trans ring gear, he installed it on the wrong side. Folks, this results in the transmission having five gears in reverse. When you shift it into reverse gear the car goes forward. The overwhelming mistake reported was one that has happened in my workshop. There is a special tool we use to align the drive shaft (cardan shaft is the proper name) on a Cayenne. It is a black plastic molded tool that is placed against the body, and the cardan shaft housing is pushed into its cradle, thus aligning the shaft between transmission and rear differential. Push the shaft into place and torque all bolts from front to rear, then forget to remove the tool. It takes so much time to tighten everything that apparently many of us are looking at final procedures that we forget to extract the

tool. Just to prevent this sort of thing from happening, one shop reported that their tool now has a bright yellow paint job. Another reported they have a two foot red flag permanently attached to theirs. One guy pinched a wire under a cam cover. Think you have all of the door panel clips aligned, then apply quick sharp energy (hit it with yer palm) to pop them into place, but have one that became misaligned, thus destroying the clip. This results in removing the panel (undoing inner pull cable, connection after electrical connection), and chasing down a new clip. Forgetting to re-install a major ground cable which is way up high and not easy to see. This happens on 996/997 cars after reinstalling the engine/transmission assembly. This results in the starter going “click when you twist the key.

One guy mixed up the breather hoses on a 996 Turbo oil tank, which resulted in massive smoke plumes after starting the engine.

seal assembly, the Freon exploded out and into me with an initial 270 lbs. of force. That is a dangerous mistake. No injury, close call.

One tech was under pressure to finish a car and did not ask someone to counter-hold a front pulley on a Turbo motor. In the attempt to simultaneously counter-hold and torque the very large bolt, the torque wrench slipped off and broke his nose . . . Arrrggguuugghhh.

Mistakes like these make us all pause and reflect. Sometimes someone demanding this or that has to be correctly dealt with. Sometimes we have to look at how we go about a procedure and reset what we are doing to avoid mistakes. Sometimes it is something new we are performing and whatever else is on our plate has to be completely forgotten while we figure out and implement a correct repair.

I once had a full plate of work for the day and suddenly had to stop and look at an A/C problem on a new (just delivered to owner) 911. Found it to be out of Freon and the compressor shaft seal was leaking at a rapid rate. I ran to parts and procured a new seal and drier, then moved forward with old seal extraction. Forgot to remove the Freon with which I had charged the system for a leak check. When I removed the circlip holding back the pressure/

To me it is interesting. Forty-two years and counting, working on P cars. It never becomes dull or mundane. I do find myself reflecting upon and marveling at how techs evolve, engineering evolves, owners evolve. COTA is coming up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Insurance Tips: On-Track Insurance By Justin Husman, The Phoenix Insurance Editor’s Note: Justin Husman is one of the principals of The Phoenix Insurance, an independent insurance agency specializing in classic, custom, and exotic car insurance. Justin has been in the business for a decade, and was awarded “Best of Dallas 2013” by D magazine. Justin is on his second 944, and can generally be found in and around car shows with his daughter in tow.

S

o if you have read the columns I wrote earlier in the year, you know how to properly insure your street cars. However, I’m not stupid (or at least quantifiably so) and I know what you all re-

24 May

ally want to know. Everyone reading this either has a fast car, wants a fast car, or is in the bathroom of someone with a fast car, and the big question is, “How do I cover it on the track?” Unfortunately for most of you the answer to that is “if you’re an amateur, you don’t.” That doesn’t mean you can’t cover your car if it’s a vintage (or modern) racecar, it just means that you can’t buy on-track physical damage coverage – but you can cover your car for most of the other time you have it. So what makes a racecar? We should probably establish that first. Very simply, a racecar, for the purposes of this article, is any car that you are driving on the track fast. It can be street legal, it can be pure

racecar, it can be caged, numbered, liveried, or it can be stock rhodium silver metallic – but all we are talking about here is covering it when you are in and around the track. So I’ll get the easy one out of the way first: if you are an amateur racer, you are going to be self-insuring most of the time when you get on the track. Just about any insurance that you can have on your car, whether it be a classic policy or a (shudder) Geico policy, won’t cover you when you go racing. Some agents will tell you that they can get it, or that they can cover it, but unless they are named Lockton Motorsports, they are misinformed. Even through Lockton, the coverage only applies to approved road courses

and only to certain approved events on those specific courses. The coverage is agreed value coverage, and is fairly inexpensive, but as I said, it is only available for certain events on certain tracks, and only for the duration of the event. There is no blanket coverage for the year that covers your car, and there is no coverage available on a random Saturday at Eagles Canyon. Lockton is a national PCA advertiser, and I can confirm that when it comes to on-track coverage, they are the only game in town. So what if you are a professional racer, and you happen to be in a championship series, and also happen to be in the reading room of a PCA Maverick member, and for some reason you have not yet secured coverage for your race team? Then today is your lucky day. Your team can get on-track physical

damage as part of your complete race team insurance package. This type of coverage is for an entire season, and usually is purchased for

Just about any insurance that you can have on your car, whether it be a classic policy or a (shudder) Geico policy, won’t cover you when you go racing. all cars the team owns. It generally starts around $100,000 and goes up, depending on the series, the team record (crashes), and the value of the cars. This coverage is an option if you buy the race team insurance package, which includes General

Liability, Workers Comp, and Inland Marine (tools and equipment) coverage, but it is not available unless the base package is purchased. I generally won’t write about something I don’t sell (Lockton on-track coverage) but in this case, I think it’s important to make it crystal clear what is available to you as a consumer. Unfortunately, there are lots of what I call “jailhouse agents” out there – people who are not insurance agents, are not licensed, but are more than wiling to give insurance advice as if it’s gospel, despite being very misinformed. Before purchasing any insurance policy, be sure to talk to a specialty agent, especially for a specialty policy. Would you take your Porsche to Firestone? No. Treat the insurance on your car the same way and deal with an expert; not all agents are created equal.

Maverick Monthly Social: Mavericks Meet at Historic Tolbert’s By Frankie Andrew

Photos by Stephanie Ho

RAPEVINE, Texas—About 48 members of the Porsche Club celebrated with a “bowl of red” at Tolbert’s Restaurant here. Frank X. Tolbert, the restaurant’s namesake, was food editor and chili aficionado at the Dallas Morning News, along with Wick Fowler, whose chili mixings are available at most grocery stores. Tolbert was one of the originals who started the chili-cooking contest at Terlingua, Texas.

New Members Margrit and Mario Bazan New members like Allen and Barbara Liebnick said it was their second meeting and thoroughly enjoyed the socializing. Mike Brodigan, who has been a member for quite some time, was still talking about the fun of the club’s Driver’s Education events. John Harvey was telling exciting stories about coming to a stop at 100 miles per hour. Joe McGlohen and Terry Laney spoke proudly of his 1976 912E and her 1974 914, known as “The Dragon.”

Judy and Mike Brodigan, Sue and Ben Connell, and new member Daniel York “Hostess with the mostest” was Stephanie Ho. Stephanie always helps introduce attendees to each other and promotes great good will at the gatherings. It is said that Stephanie can work 24 hours and still be at Happy Hour. B. J. and John Harvey, early at the social, opted for a Frito Chili Pie. Jerry and Myra Sutton were early as well in their new Baylor-green Cayenne.

New members Javier Guillermo, Mollie Moxey ,and Jouni Hiltunen Enjoying the live music were long-timers Barbara and Ralph Kauffman. Barbara always has a great smile for everyone. Denise and Bruce Moore talked about grandchildren and their 911 C4S Cabriolet.

New members Deanne and Kirk Kindred and Barbara and Allen Liebnick 26 May

Many were commending Paul and Veronica Ramos, who have been doing a wonderful job of selecting Dinner Social locations that are central and easy to find. Paul said they are looking for more location suggestions.

Š2013 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times. Porsche recommends four winter tires when driving in cold, snowy, or slippery conditions.

Simultaneously breaks new ground, while clinging to the current one. Take the performance that Porsche is known for. Then add to that the strength of a 400 horsepower engine, the design and greater stability of a wider body, the extraordinary traction and agility of all-wheel drive, and an unmistakable illuminated rear light strip. The sum of which is a sports car that holds your attention as tightly as it holds to the road. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Experience the control of all-wheel drive. The new Porsche 911 Carrera 4S.
