Sprockets:

Not so Unique

By David Robertson, Region President

T

he longer I am in this club, the more I realize that my life-long obsession with Porsche, and more specifically the Porsche 911, is not as unique as I had previously thought. Each individual Porsche model stands on its own and has a following within the club, but we all have our favorites for different reasons. My love affair with the 911 began when I was very young and it has just stuck into, well, let’s just say advanced adulthood. I will cover that story in another episode, but whenever I see a Porsche 911 in the wild, including the one I am lucky enough to own, I always get a bit of a rush. I used to think that my constant checking of the typical new and used car sites for Porsches that I wasn’t remotely in the market for could be a unique quirk, but as it turns out, not so much. I have also been able to get within $5000.00 of doubling the base price of a 911 S by adding options on the Porsche car configurator. I know that with enough time and effort I will be able to find those unique options that I have missed in there somewhere. Is this a good use of my time? Of course not, but the task is begging to be completed. This is not something I would admit to in the mixed company of non-Maverick members, although through many conversations I realize that many of you have these same tendencies. If you are like me -- and I know most of you are -- there Our tagline are plenty of ways to meet up is “Driving with fellow Maverick members Friendships” and get your dose of the expeand there is rience. Our tagline is “Driving no better way Friendships,” and there is no to meet new better way to meet new people or catch up with old friends people or than at one of our social events. catch up with From a lunch or Happy Hour/ old friends than Dinner gathering, to just at one of our checking out some great cars social events. on a Saturday morning at Mavs & Mochas, all you need to do is just show up. If you want to get out and take a drive you can go low key with a Tour or a Rally. If more adrenaline is required, you have your choice of several track events. Did I also mention we are having two Driver Education (DE) events at COTA in Austin this year for all experience levels? If you have never driven your car on a track, this world-famous venue in Austin could be your first experience! I look forward to seeing everyone at one of our events this month! 2 May

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 MAV OF THE MONTH: Jim Hirsch Jim Hirsch joined PCA in 2014 when he and his wife Sharon purchased a new Boxster S. He had been an active member of the Ford SVT club for years, and in fact was their newsletter editor when he saw the light and bought his first Porsche. His first contribution to Slipstream came in the form of a gift idea article in the July 2014 issue. Not long afterward, he heard that Maverick Region was looking for someone to take over editorial duties for Slipstream, so he generously offered his services. After a brief climb up the learning curve, he took over as Managing Editor in May 2015, and has been making significant improvements to our In the Porsche pits at newsletter ever since. Road America Not only that, Jim has continued to be an advocate of promoting our events via social media, and was instrumental in designing and producing a Maverick Region calendar. As if he didn’t have enough to do, he is now involved with our popular new Mavs & Mochas program. Thank you, Jim, for your contribution to Maverick Region!

Gimme a Minute:

April Board Meeting Minutes

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

P

resident David Robertson started the meeting at 7:01. He reported for absent Social Chair, Tracy Robertson. May at Mayo’s is coming up and we need to do some promoting. There will be a special 20th Anniversary of the Boxster display. Concours Chair Andy Kay added he will have a special award for the Boxster winner, and he has new medals featuring the new region logo. He will also expand the number of winners to include 1st Place and Class Winner for each group. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho was also not in attendance but sent her report. The March event at Uncle Buck’s was an enormous success with about 140 in attendance (about 100 of whom stayed for dinner). The cars drew a crowd in the parking lot. The April 20 event will be at Hard 8 BBQ in Coppell. Treasurer Richard Solomon will be stepping down in November. Driving in from Tyler is too far. We will be looking for qualified individuals to run for the position. We have a healthy bank account currently with ~$151K balance (including money going to COTA). The February DE netted a positive balance as well. He is exploring electronic payment options for corner workers to save future Treasurers the drive to DEs to hand-deliver checks. David also reported that the Social Media Policy committee met and came up with a set of guidelines dealing with our venues like Facebook. They will post online when it’s finalized and approved. Tech Session Chair Nikolaus Klemmer has ideas submitted by members at the last meeting and will start planning them. He wants to do up to four per year. He also presented a business card design for board members who want them. CR/DE Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported we had a successful race at COTA in Austin. Registration numbers were up some from last year 6 May

and it was a good event. Registration for the upcoming DE in April is underway and going well. She also mentioned that she and James just returned from Treffen Hill Country, which was an awesome four-star event. Registration is now open for Parade and she hopes to see many Mavericks in Spokane. DE Chair Chris Tabor reiterated that the February DE was in a good time slot and made for a successful event. We have fewer entrants for April. He mentioned the COTA DE in May advertised in Panorama, which he will consider for future events. He began a discussion about raising prices because of continually increasing track expenses. We decided to raise $25 beginning in September. We will publish an article in Slipstream later this year to explain. Rally Chairs Don and Jeff Sebert are excited for the April 22 Easter Rally. They have a great route planned, ending at a German restaurant in Muenster. The restaurant only holds 60 in the back room, so RSVPs will be necessary. It will be an open menu and everyone is on their own to pay. He requested several email blasts to promote it. Jeff also suggested that the club could possibly do an off-road tour like Land Rover has. He will work with Bill Orr to investigate. Content Editor Carey Spreen attended the Zone 5 Presidents’ Meeting and wrote a report about what all went on. It is posted on the Zone 5 website at http://zone5.pca. org for those who want to know the inside scoop. Editor Jim Hirsch reported for John Hamilton that we have 1,701 primary members. We’re down seven primary and eight affiliate members from last month, but overall still on track for the year to add 300 new members. We have added 93 new primary members and five transfers for the current year. Newsletter printing count remained the same. There is a committee discussing

April 5, 2017 moving to full color printing and increasing ad rates to help cover those expenses. Reporting for Bill Kruder, the first newly christened Mavs & Mochas had 120+ cars, which was a huge turnout. The next one is April 8 at Zims Autotechnik. Matt Wilson has volunteered to host a second Mavs & Mochas impromptu gathering in the Fort Worth area. Concours Chair Andy Kay stated that Autos in the Park is not happening this year, so he is working other possibilities. He mentioned a July 15 event at Stonebriar Church, and possibly doing a people’s choice event there. He needs volunteers to help like the M&M “Crew.” Mark Pitarresi said that tours are always attracting new members. He suggested that drive leaders get name tag lanyards like the M&M crew and possibly even special shirts to help them be more identifiable by those new members. He will explore options. Tour Chair Bill Orr has been working on multiple designs for the special PCA Texas license plate. As a board, we agreed that the mostly black plate with a star and a Texas symbol would be the choice moving forward. He has also been working with Stephanie Ho on a Drive-in Movie Social for May. It will be held on FRIDAY, May 19 at the Coyote Drive-In in Lewisville. We are limited to 140 cars, and Bill is trying to find a sponsor who could have cars on display. The cost is reasonable and all entrants have credit towards food/drink. We must pay up front, as they run rain or shine. There was a motion made by James Shoffit to approve the $3,600 commitment. Chris Tabor seconded. The motion passed. The Mav of the Month was Jim Hirsch for his tremendous work on Slipstream and help in many other areas. James Shoffit, Karl Poulsen, and Bob Kramer were also in attendance but had no additional reports.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

J

onathon and I first met about ten months ago at the United Real Estate Car Show at Lincoln Center hosted by Brenda Thompson. Since then Jonathon has attended Porsche DFW Cars and Coffee, now Mavs & Mochas, and many of our “impromptus” with his ducktail Targa. Over that time, we’ve had a chance to get to know each other, and I’ve walked away thinking WOW. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Jonathon Clarke, owner 1974 911 Targa, member since 2015 Bill Kruder: So are you from the Dallas area? Jonathon Clarke: Well I’m not but my wife Lauren is; we actually just moved here about four and half years ago. Her parents live here and we decided we wanted to be closer to them. BK: Where do you call home? JC: I grew up in the Washington D.C. area until about high school, then we moved to Panama City, Florida. After that I pretty much stayed along the Florida panhandle through college. BK: And where did you attend college? JC: I did my under graduate, Pre Med, at University of West Florida in Pensacola. BK: That’s right -- I heard you were a Navy man. How did that happen? JC: While I was at UWF I worked part time on the Navy base as a civilian employee; upon graduation they had a program in which I could join the Navy and enter as an Officer. The real enticement was that they would pay for my Med School. BK: And where did that take you? JC: Well pretty good -- I didn’t have to leave the state. I did Med School at University of Miami and was part of the Navy Reserve for those years. Upon graduating and doing my internship I became a Flight Surgeon. BK: I’ve heard of Flight Surgeons but have no idea what they do. JC: A Flight Surgeon is basically the Primary Care doctor for pilots; I was assigned to a Marine squadron. My job is to care for the pilot’s health and understand their stress and needs. 12 May

BK: So did you fly with them? JC: That was the fun part. I wanted to be a pilot but my eyesight wasn’t good enough. But yes, I would go up in F-18s actually being part of the crew at times, kind of part time doctor and part time crew member. I’ve logged about 100 hours flying; it truly was the best time in my life. BK: Well let’s talk cars: what was your first experience in a Porsche? JC: Let’s see. I was sixteen and I was dating this girl. Her dad had a 944, and for some reason he thought it a good idea for a kid who just got his license to go out in a Porsche (laughing). BK: So that’s all it took? JC: Well no, as luck would have it, some ten years later I was dating a girl who had a Boxster, and I guess that sealed the deal -- on wanting a Porsche, not the girl! BK: How long was it before you bought your first then? JC: Boy, that was a while later yet. It wasn’t until my 40th birthday. Matter of fact, on my birthday I went out and bought one. BK: And what was it? JC: You mean other than a mid-life crisis? It was a 2008 Arctic Silver over Black six speed 997. The car was so bloody fast and was such a refined car it seemed a waste to drive on the streets of Dallas. BK: And you still have it?

JC: No. Again, like I said, it was such a refined car, I wanted something that I could feel the road in, so I started looking for an air-cooled. I found the ‘74 Targa at Dallas Motor Sport. So for about six months I was living the dream of having two Porsches.

Benjamin is ready to take Dad for a spin

BK: And did that work out? JC: It was great but Lauren said we needed to make a decision on which to keep. So we had a family vote and we decided the 997 should go. BK: So tell me about the ’74. What’s so special to you about it?

JC: Well guess besides it being air-cooled, it was the first to have impact bumpers, and of course I liked the Silver on Black combo; there were, I think, only about 3,110 produced. And what I really liked was it is kind of an “outlaw” in that it has a 3L 180HP SC engine in it. BK: And have you done anything else to it? JC: A few things. I put in a Wevo shifter, added a Carrera oil cooler, and pretty much

restored the interior, though I’ve taken out every ounce of extra weight hence the no back seats. I have it down to about 2,290 pounds. BK: Any other Porsches of interest to you? JC: Oh sure! I’m thinking about a 981 (Cayman) for my daily driver. But I would also really like to own one day a late ‘80s 911 coupe. And to think that a few chance meetings would uncover yet another great personal story of a guy and his car. In fact, rumor has it that, since our last conversation, he’s back owning Porsches (plural). I wonder if Lauren will take this back to a family vote! Lastly, remember we are “driving friendships.”

What do they have in common you ask....they both fly

Maverick Autocross Series: By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

S

unday, April 2: The first MirrorCross autocross event for 2017 was supposed to run rain or shine. MirrorCross uses two similar but mirror-image courses, set up side by side, and a real Drag Race Christmas Tree light system for the start. Pairs of drivers begin at the same time, one on each side, then trade sides and repeat. Their best left and right side times are combined to determine class and overall winners. About 80 drivers braved the weather and were ready to play in the rain at Mineral Wells. Unfortunately the lightning would not stay away and the decision to cancel was made at about 10 am. Sunday, September 10 is the rain date, and has already been updated on the websites for both Maverick Region and Equipe Rapide.

14 May

Sunday, April 9: Autocross returned to the always terrific large, swooping, and hilly Lone Star Park site in Grand Prairie. The weather was much better than the previous Sunday, but the wind was just amazing. There was a record turnout of 130 cars that made over 800 runs. Seven Porsche drivers participated, and there was very close competition in class as well as for fastest Porsche. Less than six tenths of a second finally separate the top three times, and those cars were in different classes! First to third were Mark Schnoerr, Black 993; Ed Mayo, Blue/Orange 911S; and Mike Syler, Red 991. The new guys are getting good!

he third PCA Tour of the season takes us to Fortunata Winery in Aubrey, Texas. The winery was the destination of the Halloween Gimmick Rally last fall, and the participants liked it so much we decided to add it to the PCA Tours schedule this year. It’s a little bit of Tuscany in Texas. The main building is set in the woods with a front and back patio area, so you can have a great glass of wine and enjoy some authentic Italian food. We have chosen Saturday, May 20 for this tour, and the weather forecast is sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. It should be a perfect day to go for a drive and enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine. The tour starts at Westgate Shopping Center on US 75 at West Louisiana Street in McKinney at 10 am. We will travel north, then west, and then south down to Aubrey. It’s about a 72-mile trip that ends at Fortunata Winery (http://www.fortunatawinery.com) for lunch. We should arrive at the winery sometime around 1 pm. In addition to its wine, Fortunata Winery is known for Maverick members have made full use of the great its brick oven pizzas, but patio area at the winery due to our large group they have opted to offer an Italian buffet with either a Vegetarian Lasagna or Italian Pasta. Both come with bread and a side salad. So stay for lunch, or if you prefer, just do a little wine tasting. Cheese boards are also available. If you are not interested in staying for lunch, there are many independent and chain restaurants in the area. The winery is located just a few miles north of US Highway 380. It’s 11 miles from downtown Denton, 16 miles from Frisco, and 23 miles from downtown McKinney. If you plan to attend the Tour, it is imperative that you RSVP beforehand. When you RSVP, it gives us an accurate count to alert the managers of the winery so that they can be prepared. Additionally, three days before the Tour, you will receive an e-mail with the fol-

Treffen Hill Country:

A 1,400-Mile Journey

By Peter Wen, Mark Palmer, and Wendy Shoffit

ditor’s Note: PCA recently offered their second “Treffen” experience, this one located in the Texas Hill Country. We had quite a number of Maverick Region members who participated in the event. What follows are three perspectives from Peter Wen, Mark Palmer, and Wendy Shoffit as they attended this national PCA Treffen.

Over the course of Treffen, we drove well over 900 miles, all over the Hill Country. From Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock, to historic Gruene, we enjoyed beautiful scenery, open roads, and most importantly, each other’s company. We participated in group drives with 30+ P-cars. We explored lesstraveled roads with just the three of us. Each day was a new adventure. Cattle guards, oh my! To top it all off, we even drove on the silky smooth Formula 1 track at Circuit of the Americas! Bucket list: check. Five-days and 1,400 miles later, I am back home in Dallas. My 911 “1 of 1” and I took our relationship to the next level. We bonded. I met interesting people from coast to coast. I spent time with fellow Mavs and listened to their stories. It was a wonderful trip. Hats off to the National PCA team for a job well done! PCA: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

Always great places to stop and eat

Meeting people from all over America was great and our common passion was Porsches. Whether is was meeting Jay from Ft. Worth or Tony from California, the PCA drives or our own drives, sharing a meal or the stories of the day, the people I met were great, kind and made my first Treffen a terrific experience. I drove 1,372 miles from Wednesday to Sunday on some awesome roads encountering turkeys, cattle and even a Park Ranger (well that is another story). We visited around the fire pit at night, had a car wash area set up for the “OCD” Porschephiles, had our photos taken on a Texas Longhorn and enjoyed a Texas Two-step BBQ. Home base was the beautiful Lost Pines Resort, complete with golf course, horseback riding, and a lazy river, which we got at a fraction of the normal nightly rate. Each morning we were met with a wonderful breakfast buffet that changed daily so we wouldn’t get bored. Most social activities and dinners were accompanied by live Austin music and even the final one with Texas Two Step Dance lessons (for the out of towners). Screen Test: By Mark Doerner

Protecting Your Porsche Radiators With Grille Inserts

f you’ve had a water-cooled Porsche for any length of time, you’ve had to deal with a very odd design feature of your masterpiece of German engineering: the radiators and A/C condensers are practically flapping in the breeze, protected by a few thin louvers in the front. Sure, those louvers would probably stop a two-by-four from reaching your delicate radiators and condensers, but anything smaller than that, not so much. This is what us Porsche fanatics would call a “special” design feature that gives our cars “character.” While GT track-oriented versions of the 911 and Cayman have some nifty screens in the front grille, the rest of us are stuck with the problem of excessive road debris mucking up and possibly damaging our radiators and condensers. And in the Dallas/Fort Worth area there are plenty of stones flying around on the roadways with our endless parade of road construction. Of course you can just accept that lots of crud will get through the front bumper louvers, necessitating periodic bumper removal and extensive cleaning around the radiators and condensers (as outlined in an excellent article in the January 2017 Slipstream). Or, you could get some aftermarket screens for the front bumper to prevent much of that debris from getting through in the first place. I opted for the latter. And after a little online research, and lots of discussion with other Porsche owners, I narrowed it down to two aftermarket options for front grille screens: Zunsport and Rennline. Zunsport (Zunsport. com) is a British company that makes a very nice-looking set of screens for the front bumper. The sets are cut and formed for most Porsche models, ready for installation. One of Zunsport grill set the nice things about the Zunsport screens is that they can be installed without removing the front bumper. For the do-it-yourselfer who does not have the time and/or expertise to remove his or her bumper, these are a great option. The screens pop in from the front with various clips and screws, all provided with the kit. The other option is a set of screens made by Rennline (Rennline.com), a company out of Vermont in the good ol’ U.S. of A. These screens require the removal of the front bumper for installation. While that may be 20 May

a negative if you want to install the screens yourself, it does allow for a somewhat more secure attachment. Once the bumper is removed, the screens are installed from behind using a set of screws and clips provided with the kit. The kit comes with installation instructions, and the Rennline website has a video showing how it’s done. Of note: the video on their website does not show how to remove the bumper, but such videos are readily available on YouTube. For the less mechanically inclined, you could take your car to a good Porsche mechanic and they should be able to handle the installation with ease (although not without cost). There is one other option I’ve heard of – buy some sturdy grille screen and create them from scratch. Without a pattern this could be a real challenge, and well beyond my skill set. But I know there are many talented Porsche owners in our Maverick Region for whom this would be a fun and challenging weekend project. I opted for the Rennline screens, just because they seem a little more secure in their attachment to the bumper. But I have seen the Zunsport screens on a couple of Porsches and they look super nice, and they are probably plenty sturdy for most people. I had my Rennline screens installed at RAC Performance, and I was happy with the outcome. They seem as sturdy as factory-installed grille screens, without any kind of rattle or looseness, and the installation hardware is fully hidden from view. As you can see from the photos, the layout of the screens is a little different from the factory screens on a GT3 or GT4 in that they are recessed behind the original horizontal louvers (the GT cars have no louvers to contend with). But this is still a very clean look, worthy of your Porsche. Both the Zunsport and Rennline screens come in black or silver. I opted for the black, given all the black trim Rennline grill installation on the on my Porsche. But if author’s 991 GTS you want to get wild and crazy, I can see how the silver could look great with the right color combo.

Peter even posted that he was “pumped!” The setup crew arrived at 7:30 am, ready to put their cones out, and to their surprise, Al and team had prepped their shop and lot and were ready for their first Mavs & Mochas! Cones were already placed, the shop was immaculate, and they were ready for their friends! By 8:30am, at event start time, both Bills agreed that there were over 75 Porsches in place.

Zims was quite the host, featuring a fresh-cut lawn that added additional parking, as well as providing Felix Coffee, which poured out the brew as fast as our 914! Thank you to all “The Crew,” Zims Autotechnik, Felix Coffee, and all those who work behind the scenes to drive friendships! Looking forward to seeing all of you and making new friends on May 13 at Frisco Railyard. It’s a cool new spot in downtown Frisco, featuring food trucks and even a little something to add to that coffee if desired, with their bar and trucks opening early just to welcome Mavs & Mochas. First Hand Experience: By Michael Parkhill

Porsche Sport Driving School

H

ere’s my experience in the Porsche Sport Driving School, 2-Day High Performance Driving Course. Porsche has a Performance Driving School, held in 15 locations around the world. The one in the U.S. at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama is the largest. The Barber Motorsports track is a 2.38-mile loop with 16 turns and with over 60 feet of elevations changes. They also run IndyCar and other professional races there.

Barber Motorsports track layout

All of the instructors are handpicked by Porsche based on their racing background and their ability to explain the techniques to those of us who have never been on a track. The couple of times, locally, I had someone force me to turn at certain points on the track, aka “the driving line,” without explanation as to why, left me more confused than when I started. I’ve been driving my 2002 Targa 6-speed for five and a half years. I knew I would have some bad habits to unlearn to drive correctly. As soon as we arrived, we went to registration, which was completed quickly; then on to breakfast. We wasted no time eating, then into the classroom for introductions. The head instructor explained driving dynamics, the contact patch, and how far you can push your tires. Then they divided our class of 26 drivers into six groups, placing us in four vans that took us down to the track. The first three groups headed to the track; the other three groups, one of which I was in, were sent to

the autocross, skid pad, and performance steering and braking courses. Being allowed to drive a 718 Boxster S on the autocross course and not having to worry about tearing up my own tires was a blast. The skid pad (the instructors said it was the slickest they had ever been on) didn’t help my pride; I ate a large slice of humble pie. When you come off the skid pad, you wonder if you should be allowed to drive on dry streets. The fact that it was raining all day didn’t help. The performance steering and braking session added to my skills for driving my Targa to work every day in Dallas traffic. After the lunch break, it was track time in a 2017 Carrera S. We played follow the leader for several laps, then switched to the 2017 718 Boxster S for more laps. Then we were rained out and returned to the class room to finish up the first day’s instruction, then completed day two classroom work. First thing on day two, we were back on the racetrack for our full run in the Carrera S, this time on a dry track. Then they foolishly put us in a 2017 911 Turbo S (my dream car!). I found out how much more I have to learn before I can drive that car properly. For those of us who drive manual transmissions, we spent time in a Carrera S and learned proper downshifting, heel and toe, and blipping the throttle. For the final runs, they split us up (based on how well we had learned the track) to put the polish on what we had learned. We also experienced the “turbo launch” and drove a Cayenne in true off-road form. For all of the time on the track, my group was constantly passing the other two groups. My group had two professional drivers from Bogota, Columbia, and myself. My wife, as my paid guest, was given laps with the instructors in every event I participated in.

I strongly recommend the class for those who have never had time for weekend DEs due to work; those who have run in DEs will learn even more from the class. Check out the Porsche Sport Driving School (www.porschedriving.com) website for more details. Now I’m planning my return for the second class!

Liability Stuff: By Carey Spreen

Information from the PCA Insurance Chair

was invited to attend the Zone 5 Presidents’ Meeting back in February of this year to cover what goes on at one of these conferences. One of the speakers at this meeting was Ken Laborde, the PCA Insurance and Risk Management Chair. Ken is a member of Mardi Gras Region, right here in Zone 5. What he had to say was important enough to merit its own article. I’ll follow up with what else happened at the meeting in a subsequent story in Slipstream. Ken has been the Insurance Chair since 2003, and is an insurance defense lawyer. He began his presentaKen Laborde, the PCA tion by Insurance and Risk stating Management Chair that liability insurance is PCA’s second largest expense, behind the costs associated with producing Porsche Panorama. To date, the club has an excellent record regarding insurance claims, but premiums can increase if that good record changes. However, if our premiums become so expensive that PCA can’t pay them, we lose insurance coverage, and without insurance coverage, there is effectively no club. Ken explained that PCA has a group policy, which means that a claim from any one Region affects all Regions. It is for this reason that all Region officers must be aware of the proper safety procedures and forms. PCA’s policy is a $10 million annual aggregate, which covers all

events, but any claim is paid out of that aggregate amount, so a single large claim can use up some or all of that $10 million. The policy covers event participants, event officials and instructors, and crews and sponsors. Losses covered include bodily and personal injury, property damage, and advertising claims. Losses not covered include vehicle damage, structural damage, and spectator claims. Ken made it a point to impress on us the fact that PCA does not want anyone at an event to be classified as a “spectator;” this is why we insist that anyone present at a so-called “moving car” event, in which cars are moving while the event is taking place, must sign the insurance waiver, thus classifying them as participants and not spectators. This is also a reason the PCA events cannot charge admission, since someone paying an admission fee could be construed as a spectator. Regions must submit a request to insure a particular event at least three weeks in advance of that event, in order for the request to be processed efficiently. An event that does not involve moving cars, such as dinner meetings or Concours d’Elegance events (because the cars are moved before and after the event, not while the event is taking place) are automatically covered; we do not need to request coverage in these cases. However, for all moving car events, including tech sessions (during which cars can be moving up and down on lifts), tours, rallies, autocrosses, time trials, Drivers’ Ed events, and Club Races, insurance must be requested specifically, with extra fees applying to the latter three types of events due to the higher speeds and potential for greater damage involved.

Everyone at an event must sign a waiver, including adults and minors. There are separate waivers for minors, which must be signed by a parent (ideally both parents) or a guardian; other relatives or friends of the family don’t count. A point that Ken stressed was that the organization must have a system in place for getting waivers signed in order for the event to be covered, showing that the event officials took reasonable steps to minimize risk in their event planning. Having both an insurance certificate as well as signed, dated, and properly witnessed waivers are indicators of risk awareness and mitigation. Waivers must be retained for seven years plus one month after the end of the event, although digital copies are completely acceptable. One little-known fact that Ken noted was that when someone signs a waiver as a witness, that person is stating that he or she actually witnessed each person actually signing the form. In situations where a single person did not witness all of the signatures, additional witnesses must sign the witness area to show that all participant signatures are valid and authentic. Simply having an event official witnessing a waiver after the fact is not sufficient and will not hold up in court. Something to consider when someone is about to hand around that clipboard containing a stack of waivers! Speaking of waivers: some states require that certain statements contained in the waivers be printed in red, so make sure that if you copy them, they are color copies. All waivers and other safety forms can be downloaded from https://www. pca.org/forms-documents after you have logged in with your PCA username and password. 31

hat does a typical Maverick Region member find to do each month to keep that Porsche properly exercised? If you’re a regular reader of Slipstream, you probably already know the answer to that question since all of our Board Officers and Event Chairs do a great job in providing recaps of past events along with previews and schedules for upcoming activities in each issue. At the risk of being redundant, I’m going to echo and reinforce some of what David Robertson, our Region President, mentioned in his Sprockets column on page 2 of this issue. Take the month of May for example. For those members who like to take a drive during their lunch time, and perhaps get together with like-minded Porsche owners, there are eight Maverick lunches scheduled at four different locations in the Metroplex. May also happens to highlight one of our club’s long standing social activities that includes a People’s Choice Concours at the May at Mayo’s event. This year promises to be even more special as we are providing a featured display - 20 Years of the Boxster.

36 May

For all of our Mavericks who appreciate getting together in a relaxed social setting, we have our Monthly Evening Social, which in the month of May is our first gathering for a Porsche Drive-in Movie Night. Our four-door Porsche owners can attend this event and use those extra doors to bring along guests! In addition, our newest monthly social event, Mavs & Mochas, will once again bring together over 100 Maverick Porsche owners for a Saturday morning coffee meet with a chance to stroll through a wide variety of our favorite German engineered marvels. Plus, you’ll always see old friends, and more importantly, meet new friends. We have a PCA Tour visiting the roads leading to the Fortunata Winery. Of course, our more competitive drivers are also well taken care of during the month of May. We have our fourth autocross of the season and our club is a co-sponsor of the Austin Schnell Fest DE being held over three days at COTA. I hope you take advantage of the many events offered to you by the Maverick Region in May and throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you over lunch or coffee, at the drive-in, or somewhere on the road or track. Carpe Viam!
