SPROCKETS: Something Old and Something New By David Robertson, Region President It dawned on me last month that the Maverick Region has something going on just about every week. In fact, I am pretty sure things never really slowed down last winter. Now that we are well into spring, our members have a choice of multiple club events almost every week. There is something for everyone, and if you haven’t been out to see us, now is the time!

Not all Porsches are 2-door sports cars, and Maverick is one of the first PCA regions in the country to organize driving events specifically for 4-door models. Did you know that approximately 80% of all new Porsche sales have four doors? Although still in the early stages, we have had both an off-road event for SUVs, and have dedicated DE time for all 4-door Porsches. Expect to see more options for 4-door owners in the future. By the way, we welcome your suggestions and feedback on ways we can better serve our members. I know there are many of you out there with 4-door models, and we would love to hear from you. A big thank you to Carey Spreen and Jeff Sebert for all of their work in getting this program off the ground. Porsche Panameras, Cayennes, and Macans are always welcome at all of our events, and I encourage you to come out in one of these models! One of our newest programs is being developed around 4-door Porsches but we have also focused on restarting a couple of programs that are a big part of Maverick history. Our Tech Session program is bigger and more popular than ever. In fact, when these sessions are announced, you need to RSVP quickly to get a spot. Due to the sometimes limited space in the venues where the tech sessions are held, the number of attendees has to be capped. Don’t hesitate or you might miss out! Our new Tech Session program has had events that focus on all aspects of owning a Porsche. Tech Session Chair Michael Baynton has done an amazing job of making this one of our most popular events in a very short period of time. Another area that is a core to the colorful history and traditions of the Maverick Region is our Concours program. If you haven’t noticed lately, it is kind of a big deal again. Our new Concours program includes events for everyone wanting to show off their Porsches, ranging from casual events to more formal and competitive formats. Everyone is excited about this newly re-energized program, and I for one can’t wait to see what Concours Chair Mike Mahoney has in store for us! 2 May

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 It is going to be a great May and I look forward to seeing you on the road!

MAV OF THE MONTH: Mike Mahoney There have been several times in my career when I have chosen someone for a position based on enthusiasm vs experience, and appointing Mike Mahoney to Concours Chair has been a brilliant decision from the start. Mike had a smile, a pitch, and a plan that made it hard to refuse. What he initially lacked in Concours experience he quickly gained by recruiting such local Maverick Region legends as Alan Bambina and Ed Mayo to train and consult himself and other volunteers on the finer points of conducting world-class Concours events. Mike’s first big event as Concours Chair was the Concours d’Elegance at Brookhaven Country Club back in March, which exceeded by far all expectations. The Maverick Concours program is back and better than ever. Thank you, Mike, for everything that you do for our club.

Motoring Mavs at Mayo: A New Tradition By William Middleton To start with, I’ve been a somewhat regular at Ed Mayo’s shop for a number of years – when I purchased my Porsche way back now 18 years ago, they became my “go-to” mechanics – and have remained so ever since. As such, I’ve been to frequent events at the shop, especially the annual May at Mayo’s, which has always been a winner of an event; great food, wonderful people, and more Ed Mayo auto eye candy than pointing out some of the should be legal all in finer details one place at one time. So – when this new event popped up on the calendar, I knew I wanted to attend. I’d heard of the somewhat official get-togethers that occurred at the shop on certain Saturdays, mainly just several guys getting together for coffee, sweets, and shop talk, so I thought this would be much in the same vein – maybe a few more folks, but a small, friendly get together to look at cars and chat about – well, cars. HOLY CRAP was I surprised!! Turning off the main road into Baccarac Court, the short street that goes down to Ed’s shop, I was greeted with a veritable tidal wave of Porsches. They were parked on both sides, in the grass, on the dirt, in every parking lot in the vicinity, and there were others too cruising the street looking to land somewhere. It was like someone had beaten

photos by author and Landon Stogner on a hive of Porsches somewhere and they all flew out at once! I managed to park, then got about what I came for – getting photos – and WHAT an opportunity for photos!! Everywhere I looked, there was something to shoot that was beyond spectacular. I was just glad that I’d brought an extra battery and stuck in the 64 GB high speed memory card. I’d need them both! The main event of the morning was a great presentation by Ed Mayo, Alan Bambina, and others from the Concours team, about Concours preparation. It was hands-on, using one of the cars for demonstration of judging items, pointing out what’s looked at when, including some tips on getting things prepared to the “next level,” and a really good discussion of car prep. While that was going on, there were small side groups discussing various things mechanical, looking at some of the cars in the garage, and discussing this item or that repair with Tom Petrushka and others from the Mayo Performance staff. As I wandered about, seeing and greeting old friends and chatting between pictures, I realized again how much this is about people, and not just the cars. The cars are, really, nothing more than a catalyst that brings all of us together. I was also taken by the fact that everyone was actually engaging in genuine face-to-face conversations with each other. All too often I see people so busy texting or emailing, they easily spend an entire day without one meaningful conversation. All around me, conversation, laughter, human interaction, if for nothing else, our events are special because they get us out of our daily grind and actually enjoying the company of others in meaningful ways.

Autocross School and Event 2: MirrorCross By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by LightSpeed Images

The Autocross School at Mineral Wells Airport on March 17 was sold out with a waiting list. Participants got one-on-one instruction on four skill-focused sections: double skidpads connected by a figure 8; a slalom; a mini autocross course; and a special staggered highspeed offset-gate section. After lunch, students were able to run activities until they wore themselves out, which most did! Sunday was Series Event 2 – MirrorCross. This consisted of two mirror-image courses set up for dragstrip-style side-by-side starts.

We got to see our first Voodoo Blue Cayman 718-S PDK, driven by Chris Craig, run at this event. Wow! Fastest Porsche of the day, and stunning to watch. It looks like the new Porsches are becoming the fastest Porsches at autocross now also. Chris won a trophy, Chris Craig Cayman 718-S

The starts consisted of staging lights and a drag-style “Christmas tree” which counted down from yellow to green. Reaction times at the start were important, with a perfect light taking a 0.50-second reaction time. Anything less was a “red light,” which disqualified the run. Fran Ussery Boxster S

The system also recorded 60-foot times that demonstrated who could not only get going at the right time, but make the most of the start. Of course, lap times were also recorded. After each run, drivers traded sides and repeated the procedure. Each driver got six nearly back-to-back passes early in the run group, then six more later on in their run group. Best time on the left side was added to best time on the right side to determine class and overall winners. With 88 entries, a side-by-side drag race start took place an average of every 20 seconds. It was a fast-paced event and a lot of fun.

Top Porsche payout (yes, Equipe Rapide pays cash!), and also an overall top 20 performance index (PAX) payout. We collected his money and trophy to hold for him at the next event. Owen Coulman, a transfer to Maverick Region from San Diego, brought out his beautiful red 996 GT3 and was really flying. He was topping second gear twice on the first half of the course. He finished second quickest Porsche for that payout at this event. Fran Ussery brought her yellow Boxster to challenge Carolle Liu in class P1. Carolle attended the AX School so we saw some significant improvements from her. Class P4 was the largest Porsche class again, with three 914 2.0 and two 924S drivers. It was very close to see which 914 could cut the best reaction time at the start light, but then Ed Mayo was doing the best 60foot times, followed by Sigrid and Mark Schnoerr. Best 60-foot times were 2.201, 2.219 and 2.261 seconds, a spread of just six hundredths of a second. (Must have something to do with driver weight!) Those short first gears really helped us at the start! Mark was third quickest Porsche and first in P4, for that payout, just 0.4 seconds behind the GT3 on a combined 90-second course! (We pedal those little old cars really hard in the tight sections.) Ed and Sigrid were really close, each quicker on one side, but Ed’s left-side times were enough quicker to hold on to second in class P4. Sigrid was overall event fourth quickest Ladies’ Performance Index for that payout at this event. Carey and Sue were wrestling to get the most out of the 924S but drag race starts are really not a staple for those cars. Next event: Sunday, May 20, at Mineral Wells Airpark.

Hill Country Rallye: Kerrville 2018 By Paul Mosley

photos by Paul Moseley

The Hill Country Rallye might be the best Porsche event you’ve never heard of. The way things are going, though, it won’t be that way for long. This year’s Rallye sold out in less than an hour. The host hotel in Kerrville was completely booked. Porsches came from New Jersey, California (including the well-known AutoKennel 911, complete with loaded roof rack), Mexico, and Wisconsin. Kevin Devlin realized he had a weekend off, so he booked a flight to DFW to pick up his 911 stored at Zims Autotechnik. Kevin lives in -- wait for it -- Australia!

They know the Texas Hill Country like the backs of their hands and it shows. A lifelong Texan, I had little knowledge of the Hill Country except that it is there. What got my attention on the HCR route map was the Twisted Sisters routes, hundreds of miles of roads kinda sorta west of Kerrville, where the Rallye is based. The name fits. Looking at the map, I’m reminded of a cliché bicycle road racing phrase announcers might have used way back when: “The riders rode on roads that resembled a fallen ball of string.”

Take about 160 pre-1989 air-cooled Porsches (sorry post-1989 owners, you’re outta luck), maybe 175 people, and hundreds of miles of the best driving roads in the country, and you get three days of absolute fun. Begun along with our very own Ed Mayo in 2001 as a way for Porsche owners to get together and do what our cars do best, the HCR is now the passion of a group of loyalists based mostly in and around Austin who have honed this event into a well-run getaway.

Upon check-in you receive a route book and a route map, a double-sided thing of beauty, and note this: you save the map, because during the year, you’ll want to go back and retrace your routes. Then you pick your drives -- four offered each day -- that you’ll go on. Friday night pizza and beer is served up in the Porsche-only parking lot, the center of the social scene all weekend. Lean against the Martini-liveried transporter belonging to RS Werks from Delaware, at the HCR supporting client and Tejas Treffpunkt founder Michael Meldrum. Closing time is – well -- there isn’t one. Hello midnight!

Drive days are where it gets fun, because you won’t go out for an hour, or even two; maybe four, but more likely six. You’ll see gorgeous two-lane Hill Country passes with rock walls on one side, valleys on the other, tight 10 May

twisties, ok, very tight. And quick. Very few stop signs and stop lights. Few towns and zero cell service. You’re way out there. And cows. We have cows, and sheep, because the public roads do run through private ranch property. Keep your eyes open and your tank full. Hint, hint. If you are feeling frisky and fast, here is an example of one Friday route choice. Red: Spirited (Hah! Understatement of the year). A 391-mile “Long as Hell” route where you are urged to bring walkie-talkies and swim trunks. Yes, swim trunks. Because at the end you’ll be pretty drained and there is a swimming hole. If you forget your trunks, don’t be shy. Get it?

The next three groups offered 254-, 212- and 177-mile options, so there is something for all drivers and all cars to choose from. Photo breaks and lunch stops give you a chance to make friends along the way and look at how filthy dirty your Porsche has become. You could wash it for the Friday night car show takeover in tiny downtown Comfort, Texas, or what the heck, leave it dirty. I did. Cool, double cool. The closing Saturday night banquet is loud, funny, a chance to recognize those who worked hard for a solid year, plenty of Porsche raffle items. Then there’s Al Zim’s annual T-shirt toss: yell, jump, earn that shirt! You’ll seriously regret the end, and you’ll act quickly when 2019 registration opens!

My cousin was having a staple them, sort them, and mail Emily Saunders: We are both birthday party, and he and a couple them yourself. originally from North Florida, the friends just “crashed” it. BK: Now what about some of the other Porsches you guys have had? HS: Well after the Targa, about 1982 we bought a 1974 914 2.0 in Olympic Blue; that was my daily driver with 100K miles on it. Also, about this same time, a coworker had a 356 project car we bought, along with boxes of parts. Then in 1988 we bought a pristine black 1973 914 1.8. That car was exceptional. BK: And what became of them? HS: Well I retired in 2001 and I thought I might work on the 356 as a long-term project. ES: I really wasn’t too keen on the “project” as I was afraid that’s all he would do, so I convinced him to sell it and buy something newer. BK: What did you guys do then? HS: We bought a red 1995 911 (993) cabriolet and kept it for the next 11-12 years. We drove that car everywhere.

BK: What do you guys have today? HS: In 2016 we bought a Midnight Blue Metallic 2009 Boxster S with the PDK transmission. For us, “sports car” has always meant an open car. BK: Ok, so now tell me how and why has your name appeared on the back of Slipstream since 1980? HS: We became part of the Maverick Region in 1979. In 1980 the club was looking for an Editor, and since I had done that in St. Louis, I said I

would do it. Back then, Slipstream was a very simple newsletter. We turned it into a more substantial magazine. However, in doing that, we had to move from first class mail to second class to get the mailing costs reduced. The caveat was that you had to have a return address on the back cover in order to do that, and as Editor I used ours. So to this day, Slipstream is registered in Fort Worth. Hence my name still appears 38 years later. Well, as usual, I always walk away surprised at what chances life brings us in meeting people when we just stop or are stopped to say hello. As Hiram and Emily told me several times during our chat: it really is about the people. It doesn’t matter if you are an attendee or a chairperson; it’s the people. Today we call that Driving Friendships.

Maverick Tour Recap: Wine M Up, Blow M Out! By Olga Taylor

photos by Susan Tierny and author

A huge shout-out and thanks to the Tour Volunteers—y’all are awesome! With 93 drivers, 157 adults, and six minors, it took a lot of coordination and patience to keep

Harvey, Young Slack, Karl Poulsen, Mike Ferrell, Brant Worrell, Tom Gomer, and Mark Pitarresi. Then, at last, Edward Martelle called out our group, the Vintage Group.

us on track. To the first-timers, all 49 of y’all, I send a warm welcome to the world of PCA Touring. The logistics and organization were terrific. First, smiling volunteers took care of registration.

The route was simply a fun, safe drive -- mostly smooth roads, spring greenery, and some excellent curves. Over the course of about two hours, residents of Rockwall, Lavon, Josephine, Farmersville, Merit, Blue Ridge, and New Hope were treated to a spectacular rolling parade. Newcomers and experienced drivers know that Tours are a wonderful way to commune with our cars, P-car comrades, and the outdoors. For me, this tour was nostalgic; it’s been 30 years since our (Baby’s and my) last PCA Tour. So, here’s a point of view from a driver in the Vintage group. Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, the 911SC was almost brand new. Although not as powerful as the 930s or the 3.2-liter Carreras, her 3.0-liter engine held court in the more spirited PCA tour groups. Though everyone admired the grace of the vintage 356s, we all knew they would struggle to keep up with us as we whizzed through

Then, every driver was placed into a group, assigned a group leader, and awaited instructions. With so many cars, I appreciated the staggered departure times. Group 1, led by Derrick Tate, appeared to be populated with some fast P-cars -- at least that was my perception. I noticed the same for each group led by Group Leaders Tom Martin, John 14 May

the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Fast forward to 2018, when Derrick described how driving skill and style come together on Mav Tours. I was enthralled and shared my love for touring. Then, I recognized his admiration for the styling of my 911SC, and his simultaneous fear that Baby might not be able to keep up. This was my reality check. It was time to yield to the newer and more powerful models. No longer in denial, I resigned myself to life without PCA tours. All that ended on March 25, 2018. Tom Gomer and Mark Pitarresi heard my silent scream for help, answered with a Vintage group for the tour. As I approached the meeting place, three magnificent vehicles appeared next to me in a flash: a Boxster, a Cayman, and -wait for it -- a white 911 Turbo S! Things got better. On arrival at Mitas Hill Vineyard, I was greeted by a vast expanse of P-cars. I shared a smile with owner of a maroonish Cayman -- we’d flashed when passing each other the previous day! From a vintage perspective, I could not have been happier. At 38 years young, Baby was the most vintage of the Vintage group. But thankfully, Ed Martelle and his Sable 1987 944 didn’t leave us behind. Patriot PAWS was also at the Vineyard. They collected $416 in donations from the tour participants. We had a blast. I’ve already registered for the next tour and advise you to do the same. Above and left: Scenes from the Vinyard. Below: The author’s SC ‘Baby’in the Cascade Mtns..

Maverick Inaugural Porsche Promenade By Mike Mahoney, Region Concours Chair

On an overcast yet very comfortable spring Sunday, March 25, the Maverick Region held our inaugural Porsche Promenade Concours event at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch. With almost all of the region’s early long-hood 911s in the Texas Hill Country, and many other Mavericks enjoying a nice driving tour, we managed to have some 50 cars and meticulous owners in this top-down show and shine event. Some 100 guests enjoyed all of the beautifully cared for Porsches, food, and refreshments. In addition, a big thank you to our Porsche Promenade exclusive sponsor Porsche Plano for making this entire event possible, as well as providing a 2018 Panamera for everyone to enjoy. Breakfast tacos and mimosas were just a sampling of the brunch and libations served on this car show Sunday. Thanks to all of the Maverick volunteers who assisted with parking, judging and registering. The event ended with all of the winners being recognized and celebrated at an awards presentation in the Brookhaven Country Club conference facility. Our next concours event, a People’s Choice car show, will be held on Sunday, June 24 at the Lakeside Market parking lot in front of Weirs. Look for information on Facebook and via email.

March Tech Session: Alignment & Suspension By Landon Stogner So you’re thinking about trying a DE at a local track, or the back roads for a PCA Tour, or maybe just the daily drive up and down the Dallas Tollway. Either way, no matter how you drive you Porsche, there are simple improvements to its handling that can be made.

On a nice spring Saturday morning in March we had not one, but two insightful tech sessions about alignment and suspension, hosted by Charlie Lacy and team at Innovative Autosports. We had such a high demand for this topic of “garage talk” that it was broken up into two sessions, each covering the same topics with different attendees. The first started at 9 am and second kicked off at 11:30 am. As with any other early-morning Porsche event, we had a wide variety of donuts and coffee. For the second group the buffet got larger with sandwiches, wraps, pizza, and sweet treats. If the hospitality wasn’t already great, the education we received once stepping into the garage took it over the top. Charlie was all set with his demonstrations by having two Spec Boxsters set up to explain how the shop performs precise four-wheel alignments. One setup showed how they could tweak the

These are the types of changes that can be made to get the most grip and performance from & Mochas, or cruising the twisty your tires when making the turns roads looking for bluebonnets, around the track. Easter Rally Recap: Maverick Bunny Hop By Mike Barnett

photos by George Luxbacher & Bill Orr

When I saw the email for this year’s Bunny Hop Rally, I thought, wow, this could be fun! I have organized many simple rally/poker runs for my Ford club but

were really clear and easy to follow. When we made it to the last check point, we agreed that we were both hungry, and eagerly anticipated lunch at Hard 8. We shared a table with a nice couple from Ft Worth. It was fun comparing notes. When we started the rally, Laurie and I agreed that our goal was to just finish and not get lost. As George was going over the answers, we thought, “Wow, we did pretty well after all.” Then he announced that two teams tied for 4th, then announced 3rd place and then 2nd. Laurie said, “I guess we didn’t do so well after all.” Then George announced the winning team

have never run a rally that was put together by someone who actually knows how to do it. I asked Laurie if she wanted to navigate and she said sure, so we signed up. The Friday storms just missed us to the north, so we were good for Saturday morning. What a miserable day! Cold, misty and a strong north wind awaited the roughly 50 hardy souls who came. Most everyone just stayed in their cars with engines running to await the Drivers’ meeting.

was Mike and Laurie. I looked around to see who they were, until it dawned on me that it was us. What a surprise! Kudos to Laurie, who, as navigator, figured out most of the answers. I helped as much as driving and staying on the road allowed. It was a lot of work to put together a Rally as well organized as that one was. Hats off to the Rallymasters, Don and George. If you have not had the opportunity to run a Maverick Region Rally, you are missing out on a neat challenge and a lot of fun!

When the time came to start, Don and George ran what had to be the shortest meeting ever, and we were off. We were glad that Porsches come with great heaters and seat warmers.

What was amazing to me was that the tire pressure monitoring system said the tire pressure actually dropped as we drove. The tires were cooling off, rather than warming up. Laurie and I quickly found that we were going to be busy looking for the many pictured locations that we were supposed to find and to answer the questions along the route. The biggest challenge for both of us was to keep our eyes moving, looking for clues. Our Rallymasters found some interesting roads we had not seen before. Fortunately, the route instructions

Tour Preview: Aloha, Maverick Style By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair As May arrives here in North Texas I think we can all say we are NOT ready for summer season. I bet we all agree that our spring and fall seasons are spectacular. Its time to get some great driving in! There is no better location to do this than farm-tomarket Road 455! Our 3rd tour for 2018 will take us just north of our metroplex on Saturday May 19th. On this tour you will experience a route that many call the best drive that is closest to home.

If you own a Porsche and have never heard of farm to market road 455 then pay attention. Our start location for this tour will be in Van Alstyne which is just North of Dallas. Long straights, twisty turns, and beautiful open country scenery can be expected! You will see countless white picket fences, rolling pastures, picture perfect Porsche visability and we will also be

encompassing Ray Roberts lake! This tour will take us through eleven cities. The route is two hours of drive time and 90.4 miles long. We will also have a rest stop on this tour. Our Mavericks will be completing this tour at Hula Hut located at 210 E Eldorado Pkwy, Little Elm, TX. 30 May

photos by Bill Orr Hula Hut serves Mexonisian food with a perfect atmosphere for Maverick Enthusiasts. The location overlooks Lake Lewisville and Hydrous Wake Park. Views of Wake boarders doing flips and various stunts will be likely. Hula Hut also has a great parking lot and its owner is also an Porsche Enthusiast. You can register for the tour at http://mav.pca.org/Events/Tours/ . We have two classes now for our tours. Choose Vintage Class for a more relaxed scenic tour or Modern Class for the same type of tour that we have provided in the past. Which ever class you choose its your decision no matter the type of Porsche you drive. After registration we will send you all the information needed to attend three days before the tour. We hand out packets the day of the tour with all the information as well. The Drivers Briefing will begin at 9am so please arrive early so that you are signed in on time. Most tour attendees arrive early to meet new friends and socialize with familiar faces. Arriving early also helps our volunteers get everyone signed in on time so the tour is on schedule. No special navigation will be needed. Our Group Leaders will be familiar with the route and will guide each group of 14 cars or less in their group on the route.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor By Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

It occurred to me this past month, after switching from my fun car to my everyday car, that I have become comfortable driving an automatic. I know, it sounds crazy. It wasn’t long ago that the mere mention of such a thing would have sent me into a long monologue about driving for enjoyment and the appliance driving drones on the road around us. Just think of what we’re leaving to our kids. Ooops. This story that I’d been telling myself was quickly falling apart. I’d much rather be driving a manual but having a computer pick up some of the work in the everyday morning school drop-off line actually had its place. Sometimes. Right? Fast forward to the evening of March 15th. My wife and I went to the Winspear to hear Steve Wozniak talk about founding Apple with Steve Jobs and all things geek. The last place you’d think a car story would start. Steve was explaining something I think many of us can relate to. He longed for a Tesla, but he did not have complete spousal approval. So he continued to dream until one day, one of the long line of “good reasons” he had been proselytizing finally landed home. His wife told him to buy one. He wasted no time and quickly did just that. Sound familiar? He was hooked by the idea of

calling his car from the restaurant and having it meet him and drive him home. Setting cruise control in San Francisco and waking up in New York. The ultimate automatic. Great geek stuff. After a few months of ownership he remarked, “It’s definitely Artificial but not very Intelligent. I trust the A much more than the I.” He sold his Tesla and freely admits that he doesn’t think autonomous driving will happen in our lifetime. And he really wants it to. I’m overjoyed. I’m sure there are so many good reasons for flying around like the Jetsons. But think of how hard it would be to find a break in traffic to squirt through with all of the computer driven vehicles packed 5 feet apart on the freeway. With new stories everyday about another car company trying to make it’s own self-driving car it seems inevitable. But according to Steve, it ain’t going to happen. And Porsche hasn’t given up on the stick just yet. So there’s that. As a member of the Manual Transmission Preservation Society, I will rest easy with the belief that we’ll live to shift another day. (In a car with a steering wheel.) With any luck, our children and grandchildren will be able to do the same. Enjoy the Drive!
