My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor

F

ounder’s Day - We celebrate it every year at this time. In November 1962 a small group of people decided they wanted to be a region of the Porsche Club of America so they went through the effort and made it so. And here we are still actively doing the things this small group started over 40 years ago.

One of the traditional awards presented at the Founder’s Day banquet is the Richard F. Selcer award. While not a founding member, Dick Selcer was a very early member who displayed the optimum enthusiasm for life, Porsche and the Maverick Region. He was active in all the events and as Treasurer he coined the phrase, “We have money,â€? while strumming his ukelele during the board meetings. That phrase continues in every board meeting to this day, though the ukele has long since disappeared. One evening, as was typical, he stopped to help a fellow PRWRULVW FKDQJH D Ă€DW WLUH +RZHYHU WKLV HYHQLQJ WXUQHG tragic when he was struck by another car and killed.

A few years later a plaque honoring Mr. Selcer was created anonymously to be presented by the president to a deserving member. It was given to one who displayed the enthusiasm and committment to Maverick Region as Dick did. The plaque has a line drawing of a 356 engine which was Dick’s car and has a list now of 31 names. &KDUOLH 'DYLV ZDV WKH ¿UVW UHFLSLHQW RI WKH DQRQ\PRXV award in 1976 and has received it a second time in conjunction with wife, Teri, in 1981. Our beloved Lanean Hughes was awarded the honor three times; 1994, 1998 and 2004. The latest recipient was Tracey Gross. Who will be recognized this year? Who has been a constant energetic driving force within our region. Stay Tuned.....

Catch My Draft E\ -DPHV 6KRI¿W 5HJLRQ 3UHVLGHQW

I

realize the Autocross/Time Trial season is over, but we just had a meeting of the AX/ TT Rule Committee and have made some big changes for the upcoming year. I bet there will be an article about it soon enough. I am very excited that it won’t take a spreadsheet and internet access to classify your car! There will be some simple charts and four questions about Tires, Suspension, Weight, and Horsepower that could bump you up in class. The Predicted Performance Factor GH¿QLWHO\ PDGH IRU VRPH JRRG FODVVL¿FDWLRQV WKLV \HDU EXW LW was so complex I got frustrated when people would ask me what class they are in and I couldn’t tell them without running to a spreadsheet! Now I have a confession to make.Wendy beat me at the last Autocross of the year, the Charity Autocross at Texas Motor Speedway. This is the 4th time she has bested my best time, and three of those times were at TMS. For some reason I can’t get the hang of that surface. I feel like I am going fast – just not as fast as she goes! I had brand new R compound tires and everything! I had no excuses! So now all you guys snickering to yourselves about getting beaten by my wife, think of it this way. How many times KDV <285 ZLIH WROG \RX WR JHW RXW WKHUH DQG ¿[ KHU VXVSHQsion. Or make sure the brakes are bled. Or dadgummit, it’s time for some new tires! So I think I have it pretty good, even if my ego suffers from time to time. As Jan mentioned in the last issue, some things are changing, others stay the same. We have new software for Slipstream (partially responsible for some of the delays), we have a new racetrack we will be trying out in November, and we have a new place we are going to have fun at for Founders 'D\ %XW XQOHVV WKHUH LV D YLJRURXV ZULWH LQ FDPSDLJQ ZKLFK I welcome, by the way!) it looks like I am going to be PresiGHQW IRU DQRWKHU \HDU ,W VHHPV OLNH WKH ¿UVW \HDU \RX QHYHU quite get as much done as you wished, and hope for another year to accomplish your goals. Maverick DE Supports Komen Charity Event by Lori Mauthe

The event is very special to me in many ways. My Mother, Adrienne, survived her breast cancer at age 47, after a mastectomy and 9 months of chemotherapy. Known as Adie to her friends, she was a wonderful woman and a ‘mother’ to many. She survived colon cancer 12 years later as well, but unfortunately we have not yet found a cure for lung cancer. She passed away 5 ½ years ago, and I think about her every day. So, in her honor, my car number is 480 – For Adie. From the Tech Q & A - Early 911 (1965-1973) by Ed Mayo, Early 911 Tech Advisor

Q

uestion: My car was just put on a Mustang Dyno and only registered 156 hp at the wheels. I was a ELW VXUSULVHG DV , XQGHUVWRRG WKDW WKH PRGL¿FDWLRQV 56 FRPSUHVVLRQ 6 FDPV PRGL¿HG 0), SXPS etc) were to deliver approx 220 to 230 at the crank. I would have expected at least 180+ at the wheels. We didn’t weigh the car but listed it at 2700lbs and used 12hp at 50 mph in the data set up. A thought came up that the MFI pump might be off a tooth as a cam seal was just replaced a while back. The car runs and idles great, very smooth, but feels like it vibrates at high rpm when under hard acceleration, like it is trying too hard. It also leans out over 4000 rpm like the pump is just not delivering the fuel. The mixture is perfect at idle and low rpm. What would be the symptoms of a MFI pump belt off by a tooth one way or another? If not that, what might you suggest I look into.

A

nswer: First you must realize that chassis dynos are QRW D ZD\ RI PHDVXULQJ À\ZKHHO +3 $ FKDVsis dyno is good tool for measuring HP differences so that you can tune an engine. If not properly tied down wheel slippage can affect the reading. All that said, there are numerous things that can cause your low reading, a very

12

common fault is misadjusted throttle linkage not allowing full throttle. The MFI pump could be incorrectly timed and can easily be checked. Ignition and cam timing should also be checked. The linkage rods for the MFI need to be of a certain length and can cause the mixture to be incorrect. This is also a very common mistake. I can’t tell you exactly what one tooth off would do, but I can tell you that I’ve seen cars come in that were 180 degrees out of time and still ran reasonably well, but you naturally still need the pump timed correctly. What you may not know about Drivers education‌. You don’t need to know what you are doing, you will learn. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman. There are women instructors too. When Rubber Meets Asphalt by Meagan Moseley

T

he sun had risen early Sunday morning, almost like it was coming to greet me. The parking lot was disserted and the gravel was still loose from the race before. I leaned against the bitter, metal fence and stared out at the vast, open sea of grey. As I breathed in the soft morning air, I quickly imagined myself in a car, speeding across the track in hopes of getting the best time. I could feel adrenaline already pulsing through my veins and my whole body tense with anticipation. I looked from my red Mini Cooper S, to the coned course and back again. As I walked towards my car, I could tell that this run would be one of thrill and intensity. As I opened the silver, smooth handle of my door, P\ PLQG ZDV DOUHDG\ ¿[HG RQ WKH FRXUVH , VDW GRZQ LQ the black leather seat, pushed the clutch in, and turned on the car. The engine revved up like it was going to take off at any second. There was so much power in that one noise, that I felt like I was a part of the car. I reached over in the passenger seat for my baby blue helmet and grey gloves. As I slipped on the helmet and gloves, I felt the world before me change and the intensity grow even greater. Leaning back, I gripped the black leather of the steering wheel and drove toward the starting point of a realm of fearlessness and freedom. The car rolled slowly to a stop at the starting line and a man in a jet black jumpsuit told me that it would be a minute before it was my turn. I took that last minute to gaze out onto the hazy grey abyss that I had become a victim of. The man to my left with the extremely comic looking headphones on gave me the go ahead. With that, I let go of my clutch and slammed on the gas. As my RPM immediately jumped to the red OLQH P\ DGUHQDOLQH DQG HPRWLRQV ÀRRGHG P\ ERG\ , effortlessly shifted into second gear while making my ¿UVW WXUQ &DUHIXO QRW WR KLW WKH YLYLG RUDQJH FRQHV WKDW could cost me the whole race, I slung around and shot towards the slalom. I came at it on the right side of the cone, tackling each sharp motion twist by twist, just how I had been taught. Right then left, then right again and left while at the same time trying not to lose control and throw the race. My eyes veered up and to the right to see what was coming next. I came out of the slalom and straight into what seemed like a right angle curve. 18

Quickly pressing on the brakes, without losing to much momentum, I directed my car towards the next obstacle. To my surprise, my tires came within inches of the turn in cone without hitting it. Loose gravel slung across the track and my tires screamed at me from the contact with the asphalt. My eyes shifted to my next destination on the course. My car veered towards the gate to the next turn as if it had a mind of its own. I glided in and out of what I have come to call the big “Sâ€? with extreme ease and Ă€DZOHVVQHVV )URP WKHUH , UDFHG GLUHFWO\ WRZDUG P\ JRDO DQG ÂżQDO GHVWLQDWLRQ WKH ÂżQLVK OLQH , KDVWLO\ QRWLFHG WKDW WKH HQGLQJ ZDV D VWUDLJKW VKRW WR WKH ÂżQLVK line. I maneuvered my car into its proper spot back in grid and popped the hood to let the engine cool off before the next run. As I took off my helmet, sweat rolled off of my forehead and down my already steaming face. I looked to my left to watch the next person become intertwined with cones and gravel. Moving almost rhythmically between the cones and the gates, the car seemed to almost know exactly what it was doing. Watching that car I began to see that racing is not just a sport, but it is also an art.
