My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor

o you know this pretty lady? Clara Lewis has been quietly taking care of the Hope House, Hubby Bob, Hostessing the Happy Hours and countless other things for Maverick Region many years now. She was even seen swinging a hammer at the Habitat for Humanity house last spring. This is her third year overseeing the Christmas bags and gifts for the Hope House women and children. By staying in constant contact with Hope Director, Lisa Huffaker, and the other women working at the Hope House, Clara knows who is there and what they need, whether it be diapers and baby things or young teenage make up and video games. The stockings are stuffed with some things each child wants, something they need and some more fun stuff just because.... That’s the way she is. The mothers also get some things that they need plus some things to make them feel good, maybe a lipstick or perfume or bubblebath. Plus every bag gets a Wal Mart gift card just in case there’s something Clara didn’t think of. [By the way, she will be gathering Wal Mart gift cards at the Holiday Party next month. If you can’t get by Wal Mart, she’ll happily take $$ and get the gift cards herself.]

feel welcome and at home. If you would like to be a part of either the stocking stuffing this year or attend the Hope House party, I’m sure that Clara would be more than happy to get you details. What better way to become part of our charity than to be involved in this special time of year? Bring the kids for a very valuable lesson. It’s a way for them to connect with kids who are in need and realize just how good they have it! Throughout the rest of the year Clara has made countless trips to Mineral Wells helping sort incoming donations. I think she single handedly straightened up their “clothes” room several times. She sorts blue jeans and shoes by sizes and stores them in huge plastic bins. Blouses and dresses are hung, children’s t-shirts are folded. It’s quite a job. From the beginning ground breaking of the new Hope House, Clara has been there, quietly changing the world one woman and child at a time.

Clara has some help delivering the gift bags.

The past few years not only has she gathered and purchased the items for the stockings, but she opened up her home and played the role of the perfect hostess for the stocking stuffing “party” to assemble them. She welcomes a handful of Mavericks each year to make sure it all gets done in the course of one afternoon. After the stockings have been filled, she also has coordinated the date and time for us to deliver the gifts to the shelter and celebrate with the staff and residents alike. It’s quite a party, if you’ve never been. Everyone at the shelter pitches in to make US 3

Catch My Draft by James Shoffit, President

ell as I write this, the economy seems to be tanking (ok, maybe it is just the stock market). A number of people gauge the general welfare of the country based on the number of Porsches in the classified ads of the newspaper. The more Porsches for sale you see, the worse things are. A friend mentioned that the same holds true for eBay – he saw the number of Porsches for sale skyrocket over the past few weeks. An unstable stock market makes it hard to want to put money there, so I of course turn to the car listings and search for Porsches for sale. There are some really nice vehicles at very reasonable prices available. And of course as the weather cools off, it gets even MORE pleasant to get out and drive the Porsche, just for fun. As I type this, I am at Keystone resort in Colorado, amongst the mountains and trees and wishing I had a Porsche to drive up here. This is going to be the site of the 2009 Parade (the Porsche Club National Convention), and it is going to be fantastic. I will write more about that in next month’s article.

The year is winding down now as far as our events go – our last Sunday Drive, the Holiday Lights tour, ended up conflicting with the Holiday Party on Sunday, December 14th, and so had to be cancelled. We have tried to find an alternate date that might work, but have been unable to do so. Email Clint Blackman, the tourmaster, if you have some clever suggestions. Founder’s Day will be a bit different this year – less of the hours of handing out autocross and time trial trophies, and more recognition of other events. The event is going back to formal wear again, so it is a good reason to dress up and support our charities and have a nice meal with your PCA friends. Round Up is also going to be a bit different than in years past, and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Linda Bambina has been working hard on this, and has some big plans! Sign up now! Finally, the Holiday Party will be on December 14th at the same place we had our New Member Party this year – a wonderful facility. So come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis, Secretary

M

averick Region October 2008 Board Meeting…

tory in January or February. Hopefully, the ads in the September and October issues of Slipstream will boost sales.

In attendance: James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Jan Mayo, Bob Lewis, Tracey Gross, Mike Brodigan, Christy Dominick, Jim Falgout, Teri Davis, Charlie Davis, Travis Howard, Robyn Howard, and Bryan Bell.

Jan admitted that nobody who needs to provide articles or ads was here. Unless people write more articles, Slipstream will have two blank pages!

James called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM. He immediately gave the floor to Wendy… Wendy confessed that directory sales are slow so far… she has sold approximately 12. She plans to print the direc-

Bob L reported that only 16 people attended the recent Happy Hour at Reata’s. We’ll be at Uncle Julio’s in October, Bugatti’s in November, and Big Bucks Brewery in December. Bob then led a discussion about how to increase Happy Hour attendance. Tracey is pleased to have her Founders Day committee set. They are working well together. They have a goal to raise twice the donations through the auction as we did last year. Travis wondered how long the cocktails would be served and seemed pleased with the answer, which was 5:30 to 7:30. The Holiday Party will be at the clubhouse at Heritage in Keller on December 14th. Mike said he was still learning which exit to take to get to Hackberry Creek Country Club. Christy said she had a new laptop, a new job, but no new goodies. Bummer… Lisa, with Bob K missing, announced that she had money…something like $2700 from Slipstream ad sales.

My notes were not clear but I think she plans a shopping trip? She said the recent DE was great! Due to the influx of customers on the Sunday Drive, we made about $500 for our H4 charity. Bryan put on his food critic hat and gave one thumb down to the grouper and one thumb up for the salmon. Actually, he’s still trying to figure out what the vice president does? Jim didn’t say much. Teri had a classic failure to communicate. She got an insurance certificate for the October 12th Rally…but there is no October 12th Rally. Charlie recently sold the old air conditioner out of the Truxster for $25. He wanted Bob K to know that finally his Truxster account is showing a profit! Unfortunately, Bob K was not in attendance, so he kept the $25 until next month. Travis was relieved that our Time Trials are over. The last two were well attended (47 & 35 entrants). The results of the Bryan Bell vs. Marilynn Moseley grudge match were unexpected…Richard Diller won! Lisa jumped in with questions about awards. Robyn had nuttin’ to say. James reported that some of the DE’s are already set for 2009. Jan, after a call to Linda, said that plans for Roundup were complete. We wondered if it was advertised on the website? If not, it should be. James adjourned the meeting at 7:54 PM.

Autocross #5 - Forcing the Instructor to Make a Tough Choice By Mark McSweeney

I

wheeled into the pit area in the cool early morning air with great anticipation. Not only was this the first time I had tried an autocross event with the Porsche Club, but the Arlington Ballpark lot was a new site for all the Metroplex clubs. What would the lot be like, how would the surface respond to a day of heavy autocross? Several of us had wondered the day before at another autocross event what adventures awaited at the lot. Seeing the rows of wonderful German machines only heightened my anticipation. A pleasant surprise awaited me, Mark McSweeney, in that here there seemed a greater the “MiniMac” pushes abundance of instructors more than his instructor to test his willing to ride with newbies (I mean, Depends! novices), like me. This club was very friendly and helpful, and so was the instructor who crawled into my Mini Cooper with me. He was honestly glad to help. As my ensuing laps unfurled, I hoped he was able to maintain that joy of helping, for I feared I might have pushed him toward a difficult decision between two unpleasant options (the third option of bailing out of the car at 45 miles an hour not really being a viable one for either of us): would he reach first for a Depends, or for the “help me Jesus” bar (located Kirby Allison gives the “thumbs over his passenger door - grab- up” as he mentally prepares for bing all the bars in the car would his next run. require a Cirque du Soleil feat). Mind you, slightly scaring one’s instructor might be an impressive thing if the feeling of mild panic were caused by one’s confident and intentional handling of the car. To effortlessly glide through the course with a “mind like water,” crossing the finish time in a record time, if only for a rookie (uh, novice), would be both surprising and a little scary. But such was not the case for me. The courage that must have been demanded of my instructor was more due to my totally novice status with my Cooper, being both new to the car and to autocrossing in general. I wondered as this hero Cathy Howard is all smiles stepped out of my Cooper after 4 as she, and dad Travis, get laps with this crazy Irishman, if ready to run. the Porsche club prepared their instructors by first sending them on an active tour of duty. 10

Thanks to all the club organizers and members for a great day of driving, and to those unsung heroes of autocross, the driving instructors.

Autocross #6 -

I(‘d) Like Ike (to stay away)!

By Carey Spreen

T

he sixth and final points-paying event in the Maverick Region 2008 Autocross Series was scheduled for the weekend that Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and the Texas Coast, and there were dire predictions of high winds, torrential downpours, and apocalyptic lightning strikes. There was much discussion by the Maverick Region board as to whether to cancel the event, and if it was to be cancelled, when that decision was going to be made. Other automotive and non-automotive events in the area had already been canceled due to safety concerns, but of course no one was sure what Ike was going to do once he made Carey Spreen, braving the landfall. Would he cut a swath of predictions of Ike, came out destruction through the DFW area, to play anyway. or head toward East Texas? At the beginning of the week, the weather predictions didn’t look good. But as the actual day of the event got closer, it appeared that Ike was going to head east, so the board made the decision to stage the autocross as scheduled, rain or shine. As long as there was no lightning, hail, flooding, or standing water, the event could turn out to be an exercise in wet condition car control, which is something we could all use as well! Birdville Stadium in North Richland Hills, where this event took place, is also where we had the first autocross of 2008, and Rick Gonzales demonstrates it is the smallest venue we have how he achieved the fastest used this year. The course laid out time of the day. for that first event was very tight and technical, and required shifting between 1st and 2nd gear more than once for the majority of entrants. So I figured that this would also be the case for Autocross 6. However, for this event, Clay acquired the services of a guest course designer: Jerret Jan, of the Metroplex Miata Enthusiasts. Jerret used a large loop at the first portion of the course to extend the lap length, and, because he placed fewer (and larger-radius) turns in the rest of the course, it was more wide-open, with most cars able to stay in 2nd gear for each run. There were some exceptions to this, but the majority of us only had to shift once per lap. Speaking for myself, the less shifting I have to do during an autocross, the more I can focus on Mike Lockas shows us some accelerating, braking, and turninguplifting driving. -always a good thing.

Photos by Charlie Davis

As it turned out, the day dawned cool and dry, and was one of the nicest autocross days we have had all year. Turnout was on the low side (28 participants), probably because of the threat of rain, but those who did show got 12 runs each (plus fun runs for those who needed more than 12!), and we still finished before 3pm. This was the last points-paying autocross of the year, but if you It must be that extra lean want to try your hand at autocross- from inside the car that gives Bob Kuykendall his ing with a twist, sign up for this lifting power. year’s Round-Up, a multi-event weekend scheduled for November 21-23 (the weekend before Thanksgiving). See the ad or article for it elsewhere in this issue. It will be a fun one!

Around and Around We Go by Clay Perine

Ok

... Let’s get something straight right now. Betty and I are Autocrossers. Hard core Autocrossers. Up until we joined PCA, we had one experience with a Rally, and that gave us two things that we remember vividly.... “What is the difference between paved and unpaved? 45 Minutes.” And “Rallies were invented by divorce lawyers.”

Photos by Charlie Davis

There was some beautiful driving around Lake Grapevine, and some really nice twisty roads that I didn’t know existed. Betty wants to go back and explore the roads when we are able to really drive and not have to keep looking for stuff on the side of the road.

But a single rally with the Maverick Region changed all that. We now love to go on the rallies, and the August 23 Loopy Rally was no exception. We showed up at the Grapevine Mills mall ready to go, and excited to be there. Eight cars showed up, and we were the oldest car there, and the only air cooled car! As usual, Teri had the rally course all set out, with some interesting twists. We even got bit by a rule that we explained to one of the other competitors during the event.

Clint is astounded as Teri shows him how dizzy he really was.

Afterward, we all went to Braums for Ice Cream. Teri had to come up with a bunch of Tie breaker questions to find a way to separate the three couples who tied for second, and she can really come up with some tough ones. We got to have fun arguing with Teri over an instruction (Teri was right), and we met some really nice new friends. So, when is the next Rally?? The Shawnee Trail Rally was held on July 20th, 2008. There were 12 cars and 24 people in attendance. Congratulations to Clay and Betty Perrine on their victory! I guess no divorce attorney is needed after all!

Teri’s renowned rallies bring people all the way from Wisconsin!

From the looks of the pictures, everyone seemed to have a great time. Thanks again, Teri, for a fantaxticand fun rally! Now if only the rest of the country could learn how to put on such great events.

he fourth annual PCA Escape was held on September 18-21 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was hosted by the Road Runner Region – the same great crew that has been organizing Fiesta del Porsche for several decades. With over 160 cars registered, PCA members took over the Marriott-Albuquerque for three event-packed days, with the emphasis on social get-togethers and driving tours.

Horse Power v. Horsepower.

Car wash and Concours prep.

The Escape weekend began with a Concours on the greens of the Tanoan Country Club with beautiful mountains and sunset providing an amazing backdrop. For the next two days participants were able to choose among ten different tours – options included checking out the Very Large Array, visiting galleries in Santa Fe, touring the Acoma Sky Pueblo, and driving your Cayenne in an offroad tour. Friday evening festivities were held at the Anderson-Abruzzo Balloon You really must look at this issue on the Maverick Website to get the full impact of the south west colors in front of this Santa Fe Gallery.

Guests were treated to a performance by a Native American dance troupe on the patio overlooking the mountains. On Saturday night, attendees were regaled with great stories by special guest and Porsche racing legend, Vic Elford, the first driver to race a factory-backed 911 in rally competition. The Road Runner Region did an outstanding job organizing the event and many thanks to all the Zone 5

Happy Hour at Reata’s

T

by Bob Lewis

he Happy Hour travelled to downtown Fort Worth for their September Happy Hour. This location is as west in the region as we usually travel. In addition Reata’s is somewhat upscale to our regular restaurant. These factors could have contributed to the smallest attendance we have had this year. But those that attended had a wonderful view, wonderful food and drink as well as exemplar service. Reata’s told us that we could occupy their best dinning room if it were not booked by another group for that evening. The Dome Room is on their top floor and over looks downtown Fort Worth and points east. It is a truly magnificent venue. We had two waiters that served our tables exclusively. The staff at Reata worked with the committee in preparing a menu just for the Maverick Region of the PCA. It Wayne Corbell & Chris Hamilton was comprehensive and wide ranging in cost. But enjoying fellow Mavericks. of course there are always those that want something else. One of our members just loves the Grilled Double Bone-in Pork Chops with Apple Chipotle Salsa. So the servers brought him that. He enjoyed them so much that the next time at Reata’s I am going to be sure and have them. Then my wife decided she wanted the Bacon Wrapped Asparagus side. She did enjoy this and thanked the servers for this additional item. When it came to the deserts Clara and I indulged on the Dutch Oven Apple Crisp with Cajeta. It too was memorable.

A new person to the Happy Hours was Avery Murphy. Avery is not new to our regional events. He enjoys our autocross events at Mineral Wells. He and Mike Lockas talked at length about these events and Avery’s Porsche. I believe it is a custom Yellow 914. Murphy & Mike talkin’ cars...

Joy and Bryan Corbell brought Bryan’s father Wayne. Wayne doesn’t drive a Porsche, but does pay attention to his son’s Porsche hobby. Wayne lives in Oklahoma but started the family business in Fort Worth. All in all the evening at Reata’s was very nice. Yes, it took a little longer to drive Joy & Bryan Corbell to downtown Fort Worth in Living it UP! the evening traffic, but we always enjoy the company of our Maverick Region friends. And this time the ambiance with the excellent food was worth the trip. Join us in November as we go to a fine Italian place, Bugatti’s Restorante just north of Love Field at Bachman Lake. See you there.

Maverick Yellow Pages by Wendy Shoffit

H

ave you ever wondered who in the club is a lawyer, doctor, accountant, architect, investment banker, general contractor, or other professional whose services you could use? Well, MRPCA would like to put together an online only yellow pages for members. These are NOT recommended referrals and we certainly make no promises or guarantee for these services. It will still be up to you, the consumer, to find the right person for the job. That being said, we are always seeing requests for club members’ referrals. What better way to support your PCA family than to increase their business? Need a flooring contractor for your next home renovation? We have one for you. Need someone to turn your daily driver into a race car? We have a few of those, too.

This FREE advertising service will be available to all MRPCA members and will ONLY be online. All members will have an equal opportunity to list their name, company name, phone number, website, email address, and simple business category. No logos or long advertisements will be allowed. Keep it simple. If you are interested in putting your information (listed above) on our website, send an email to yellowpages@ mavpca.org. If the listing is too long, not to worry. We’ll trim it down for you. We look forward to having this service online for you by sometime in December. It will be an ongoing project, so feel free to send your information at any time. Obviously, though, the sooner you get your information in, the sooner you can get increased business from your PCA friends.
