Drafting: Volunteers Needed By John Hamilton, Region President

Y

es, you saw that right: this month’s article is about DRAFTING, as in drafting YOU! We’re in need of a few volunteers to help fill our positions in the club. Here are the primary positions that I’m aware of: • Slipstream Editor(s): Our Slipstream Editor, Carey Spreen, is retiring from the job, but not leaving the area, and he is ready and willing to train his replacement(s). Ideally, we would like to have an editor and an assistant editor to handle the monthly job of putting our monthly journal together. •

Autocross Chair: Our Autocross and Time Trial Chair, (yes, he has done BOTH for the last few years) Travis Howard, is also not leaving the area but is stepping down from those posts. He and Robyn are already working on a schedule for next year but we need some volunteers to step-up and fill those positions

Time Trial Chair: See above . . .

Autocross and Time Trial Registrar: Robyn Howard has faithfully managed the email invites, calendar and registrations for these events. Robyn will train her replacement as our registrar for the events.

Graphic Artist: We are looking for someone who can create ads and flyers for our website and newsletter to promote our own Regional events throughout the year.

So if you’re interested, please contact the appropriate person to find out more about the position: • Slipstream Editor or Graphic Artist: editor@mavpca.org • Autocross Chair: AX@ mavpca.org • Time Trial Chair: TT@mavpca.org • Autocross and Time Trial Registration: Red86944@yahoo.com

Mav of the Month Some people just keep on giving back to the club, again and again. Such is the case of Linda Bambina, whose non-stop energy keeps our club growing and glowing. Since Linda retired as a teacher, she has made a full-time job out of being our Public Relations Chair. Most recently, she helped Richard Solomon drive our charity event in Tyler, Texas, which raised $10,000 for the Tyler Junior College Ron Wakefield Scholarship, and over $4,000 for our own HuffakerHughes Hope House charity. Her Drive, Energy, Enthusiasm and Passion makes her DEEP as a continuous contributor to our club, and as a great human being. So when you see Linda, please thank her for all her work. And Linda: enjoy your gift card to the Silver Fox restaurant in Grapevine. You deserve it!

T

here is so much information in this issue of Slipstream that I don’t know where to begin. Wait – yes I do – the cover! Since the June issue we have been teasing you with photos of a Porsche 908 that actually belongs to a Maverick Region member, eventually spilling the beans to reveal that the car was a drawing card for a very special fundraising event that happened on September 28. The cover photo, taken by our own Charlie Davis, sums up that event in a few million pixels. I hope you rotated the magazine cover 90 degrees clockwise to get the full effect. If you haven’t done it yet, do it right now. It’s ok, we’ll wait. Thanks largely to the ideas, efforts, and attention to detail of Billy Hibbs and Linda Bambina, the Tyler Junior College Ron Wakefield Scholarship fund and the Huffaker Hughes Hope House (Maverick Region’s perennial charity) both received large donations to their respective causes, and lots of Region members got a rare opportunity to see, hear, touch, and even sit in the 1968 Porsche 908 that Vic Elford drove in the Zeltweg

500 km race in Austria. Not only that, but they got to see, hear, and touch Vic Elford himself, who talked about his years of rallying and road racing as a Porsche factory driver. See Richard Solomon’s comprehensive article in the center spread of this issue for the details. But don’t overlook the other stuff that is contained in this issue. Region VP Gareth Maurice and member Bruce McQuaid are putting together a local edition of the Tire Rack Street Survival driving course for teens early next year; check out the story describing how it works and how you can get involved. We also have a Saturday Drive this month, ending up at Vetro Art Glass in Grapevine. If you have not participated in one of these wildly popular events, I suggest you jump in and try this one. November traditionally is when we hold our annual year-end celebration and election of officers that we call Founders’ Day, this year on Saturday, Nov 22. See the ad in this issue for details, and if you can’t make it, be sure to clip out the ballot and mail in your votes for next year’s board. Read on!

Gimme a Minute: October Board Meeting By Gareth Maurice, Region Vice President and Guest Secretary Our latest Board Meeting occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 and the tires screeched at 6:55pm to kick it off. All Board members were in attendance except our beloved Secretary, who handed the task of taking the Meeting Minutes to yours truly. Our cast of characters included President John Hamilton, Vice President Gareth Maurice, Social Chair Tracy Robertson and husband David, Linda Bambina, Richard Solomon, Treasurer Jim Falgout, Neill Flood, Jouni Hilton, Past President Mike Brodigan, TT/ AX Chair Travis Howard, TT/AX/ AX School Registrar/Swap Meet Coordinator Robyn Howard, Bruce McQuaid, Michael Vatter, and Slipstream Editor Carey Spreen. While we all drive rolling art, it is the people interaction that makes our club so special. Which is why it was so curious that Linda would not share her personal sugar . . . cookies . . . at the beginning of the meeting. Oh, we’ll remember, Linda! On to business. John Hamilton began by passing along news on a few of our members. John Harvey’s surgery went great and is up and walking around. Myra Sutton regrettably has had a setback and is in all of our thoughts and prayers. David Frick also had surgery, and after a couple of hurdles, is on his way to a good recovery. In October, the Maverick Region received 21 new members, which gives us 2,339 total members, 1,459 of which are Primary members. I relayed how Bruce McQuaid and I volunteered at the recent Tire 6 November

Rack Street Survival course for teens. (See the article in this issue.) The fun part about Board meetings is always hearing about great upcoming events, and Tracy Robertson did not disappoint. Our annual celebration known as Founders’ Day will be Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. Items are needed for the Silent Auction! She announced our first ever Maverick Photo Contest; winners will be announced that evening. There will be formal judging ahead of time, and then People’s Choice voting during the night. Categories to be announced, and rules are available on our website, http://mav.pca.org. Linda Bambina and Richard Soloman revealed that the recent Billy Hibbs-hosted 908 charity event was a huge success, with 97 attendees. The event brought Vic Elford and the actual Porsche 908 he drove in 1968 in Austria together at Billy’s “barn,” which is more of a museum. Don Sebert brought his RS America which Vic helped design, and Vic signed it in multiple places. Vic and Billy took a lot of Q&A, offering very detailed history. The ol’ 908 was even started up for the crowd, and attendees were allowed to sit in her in exchange for a donation. A total of $4,487 was raised for Maverick Region’s charity, the Huffaker Hughes Hope House, in Mineral Wells. The event also raised $10,000 for the Tyler Junior College Ron Wakefield Scholarship. Linda is going to begin a new series next year for Slipstream based on drivers and driving events. With over 2,300 Mavericks, she would like people who know about members with interesting stories to contact her. For instance, current DE Chair Chris Tabor came

October 1, 2014 to some Board meetings, took over the Driver’s Education program, and then bought a Cup car. Jim Falgout confirmed the club is in good shape financially. Good weather and great events. In 2014 we have donated $11K to the Hope House. It was proposed and approved to give $5,000 more, but it will be earmarked for specific projects. Mike Brodigan suggested reinvesting in member events by making the All Member Party and Founders’ Day even better. Neill Flood joined us again and is diving right in by being one of the group leaders on the upcoming Sunday Drive to Grand Pappy Point on October 12. Travis Howard reported on the Time Trial and Autocross in Mineral Wells during the final week of September and had a great turnout. Robyn says to tell everyone SHE DROVE AWESOME!!! Also, we had 43 drivers registered for the Oct. 5 Time Trial at MSR. The Maverick Swap Meet at Zims Autotechnik is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18. Oct. 26 will be the last AX of the year, while the final Time Trials are Nov. 15 and 16 at Mineral Wells. Carey Spreen: WOOOOHOOOO! Slipstream out early this month. Carey attended the recent Lone Star Le Mans weekend at COTA – lots of Porsche brass spoke to the Porscheplatz crowd. Those who signed up early got two Parade Laps Saturday morning. Zone 5 Representative Lynn Friedman donated all of the extra sodas to the Maverick Region from the event, as COTA charges big bucks per 12-pack. As a result of the aforementioned 908 Event, Porsche drivers in the Tyler area are asking for Sunday Drives closer to home. Saturday

routes . . . stay the night . . . return Sunday. Connecting to John Harvey. Tyler has at least 30-40 Porsche owners and some fantastic local driving routes. New Editor: Recent Maverick member Jim Hirsch to begin helping with Slipstream layouts. Carey envisions them partnering for a while and then turning it over, as Jim has stated he is interested in becoming Editor. Looking forward to your contributions, Jim! In closing, John Hamilton announced the November Maverick Monthly Social will be held at the Silver Fox in Grapevine on Thursday, November 20. Silver Fox will honor Happy Hour prices all night for Maverick Region members. Open Roles: We need someone to take over the AX and TT Chair roles, otherwise the series may be reduced. Next year, TT may be put on hold and focus put on a smaller number of Autocross events. Travis and Robyn may continue with the AX School. We also need a new Graphic Artist to create the ads for Slipstream and the Mav website. Mav of the Month: Linda Bambina, for going to great lengths to organize the 908 charity event in Tyler. Meeting adjourned at 7:50pm! Wendy: please come back!

Garage Glimpses: Eclectic Tastes By Linda Bambina, Region PR Chair

M

Photos by the Author

ichael Picolo has had an interesting career path, as well as owning some amazing cars in the wide variety of places he’s lived (from New Orleans to LA to Dallas.) You might recognize his name (or his car!) since he has been a long time Slipstream Advertiser, and both are part of his ad as a realtor for Ebby Halliday. While Mike has just your “standard” three-car garage, he has some outstanding examples of engineering and style, with primo examples of a Porsche, a Jaguar, and a Harley-Davidson. But before I go into details about all that horsepower, I have got to tell you about his home office and his unique array of art and memorabilia. A bit of a back-story first: Michael is Godfather to the granddaughter of William (Bill) Motta. Motta is currently the Art Editor Emeritus for Road & Track magazine. He has created all kinds of posters and art for races and racecars for decades, both for this popular car magazine and for a variety of other occasions. Michael has three knock-your-socks-off signed lithographs (the #1 copy to boot!) of races and cars in his office. He has a set of cedar shelves stocked full of books, personal items, and gifts of all kinds that connect to him, his family and his eclectic passions for life. (OH, and he’s a avid chef as well! Has a talent for landscaping, design, staging homes . . . you get the picture.) Back to the garage: It’s immaculate, beautifully painted and again, full of fabulous examples of fun memorabilia. But once you hear the stories behind the items on the walls, you begin to realize that Mike carefully selects what is displayed. Everything has important meaning for him.

Mike in the garage with his 993, E-Type, and Softail Deluxe My favorite example of this concept is a large black and white photograph of James Dean at a gas station with his famous 550 Spyder in the foreground. OK, Porsche, got it. But Mike explains: in the background of this particular famous photo, there is a 1956 Cadillac just like the one Mike’s dad once owned. Cadillacs and his dad were like forever connected, a really big deal in his family. And where was that Caddy parked? Next to a restaurant called Rosalie’s. Yep, Michael’s mother’s name. Perfect Picture. Now I wish I could TAKE the perfect picture of his 2008 Harley Softail Deluxe, his Primrose Yellow ‘72 V-12 Jaguar all-original convertible, and his ’97 Arctic Silver 993 C2S Porsche with only 31K miles AND approximately 23 three-digit factory option codes on the sticker under the front deck lid! Talk about a tricked-out-Porsche! I think he needs to bring that car out to visit more often!

Above: One of Bill Motta’s signed lithographs. Below: Harley-Davidson memorabilia also adorns the garage wall

Five-Speed Chatter: A Suspension Odyssey, Part 1: Bumps and Bruises By Ash Seidl-Staley

M

y utter disdain for the condition of the roads in the city of Plano is publically known. Bumps, potholes, uneven lanes, the constant need for construction, and dome-shaped overfillings of asphalt pepper the streets in my neighborhood. I hate that my commutes to work and school consist of me weaving in and out of a concrete mine field! A lot of my issues with the road are really based on how my car handles the danger. To put it frankly, my shocks are shot, and my suspension as a whole could use a good tune-up. I had planned on slowly purchasing and piecing together the parts needed and, during a work-free weekend, knock out the whole shebang. But again the 914 had her own schedule; instead of going quietly and peacefully into the garage, she had to start a fit and make a huge scene! My troubles began when I had just pulled into the UTD parking lot, where I hit a large bump and immediately heard the loudest THUNK I think I

have ever heard come from a vehicle. The cause of the noise was unknown at first, but I knew something was drastically wrong because it felt like my entire front end was dragging on the gravel. I quickly pulled into a parking spot and got out to check if there was any damage. Luckily, the front of the car was still up off the ground, and nothing was immediately popping out as being the culprit of the sound. Confused, I hopped back in the car, fired it up, and tried to back out of the parking space to no avail; it felt like the brakes of the car were stuck. Not wanting to burn up the clutch attempting another go of it, I turned off the engine and pulled out the old jack to lift up the passenger side front section, as this was the side I thought the noise originated from. Once the car was in the air I saw that the wheel moved freely (so it was not the brakes), but I also saw what was happening. My front right shock had fully collapsed, which made my A-arm at the ball joint rest on a section of the inner rim of the wheel. Subsequently, the grinding and dragging sounds came from the fact that the wheel wasn’t moving, due

to all the weight pushing down from the A-arm, and instead was dragging along on the gravel. I could also see that the castellated nut on the bottom of the ball joint was shaving pieces of metal off of my inner rim. Fiddling around with the strut some more, I noticed that the instantaneous release of tension had completely obliterated my ball joint. The “ball” part was completely disconnected from the “joint,” and the protective rubber boot was shredded beyond recognition. Not wanting to be late for class, I left the car where it was and called in a tow truck to bring her home. Once she was back in my parking lot and with her front tires off, the real work began. After my first inspection of the suspension components, I deduced

Busted tie rod end of this “suspension odyssey” will cover the removal and installation of all the suspension components listed above. I will try to give step by step instructions as best I can, while sharing the problems I had to overcome and how they could have been avoided, so that if a suspension upgrade is in your future, you will be better prepared for the challenge than I was. Stay tuned next month for Part 2: Tie Rods and Ball joints.

One good-looking hitchhiker that I would need: new shocks, new ball joints, new tie rods, and “while I was in there,” new rotors, a re-packing of the wheel bearings, new brake pads, and if needed, a re-seal of the brake calipers. Naturally, I chose to do the Lemfoerder turbo tie-rod upgrade, and counted myself lucky that I was able to get all the parts I needed within a reasonable timeframe and for a reasonable cost. I was doubly lucky when I learned that I wouldn’t need replacements for the front torsion bars, as they were still firmly intact and solid. But my luck would soon run out, as problem after problem surfaced from what was supposed to be a “routine” suspension upgrade. As I have already run out of space for this article, the next few installments

Le Auto Grange: Ron Wakefield Scholarship Event featuring Vic Elford By Richard Solomon

T

he story about this fantastic event, for me, started nearly two years ago. The host of our Tyler Event, Billy Hibbs, called me one day and said, “What are you doing for the next three days?” I really didn’t know what to say, except, “Why?” He said, “I need to travel to South Carolina this Sunday and pick up a rare 1968 Porsche 908 race car that I bought, and I need someone to go with me.” That was all I needed to hear. I was in! I have to say, it was one of the best trips of my life! Upon arrival in South Carolina, the broker, when Dale Miller (former PCA Historian, no less!) rolled up the doors at a warehouse revealing the 908, I was speechless! It was a historic PORSCHE race car!!! It took four-plus

Vic describes the memories that accompany his first viewing of this car in 45 years It was important to Billy to recognize Ron, create an endowment, and raise funds for Maverick’s charity.

Billy Hibbs’ Le Auto Grange: everywhere you look, there is a feast for the eyes! hours to be briefed regarding the 908, including the very detailed starting sequence (which to this day, was the notes I wrote for Billy). We then cranked it up! Wow, what a sound!! After much excitement and rushing adrenaline, we loaded up the car and headed back to Tyler. Fast forward to spring of 2014. Billy and I were talking earlier this year about his 908, his newly completed French-style car barn (called “Le Auto Grange”), and Porsche history. We talked about Vic Elford, his Porsche legacy, and the fact that he drove Billy’s 908 in competition in 1968. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, the Ron Wakefield Event was born. The plan would include bringing Vic Elford to Tyler, raising scholarship funds in the name of former Tyler Junior College graduate Ron Wakefield (long-time Technical editor for Road & Track in the 60s and 70s), and raising funds for the Maverick Region’s charity, the Hope House. 16 November

The day of the actual event began with a clear and crisp morning! We were blessed with a Porsche drive day that we all would enjoy. But before I go too far, I have to thank a special person that helped with the organization of this event: Linda Bambina. She worked tirelessly to make sure that pictures, the Garage Glimpses article, auction donors, and the 50-year tribute to the 911 was all ready to go. For that, I SALUTE YOU Linda!! Anyway, when we pulled up to Billy’s house, I was struck by the French design and his motor court area. What a perfect place for a car event! There were Porsches already on hand. Shortly thereafter, all the cars for the 50-year tribute started showing up. Let’s thank those folks: From Andrews, TX (30 miles east of the New Mexico border and over 450 miles from Tyler), Dave Walinder generously showed his red 1967 911S; Ed Mayo (although he was out of state at another Porsche event) provided his beautiful silver 1972 911S; Carey Spreen brought his gorgeous red 1982 911SC; Don Sebert brought his Vic Elford-inspired red 1993 RS America;

Fifty years of the 911 were on display outside

and Region President John Hamilton finished up the great corral of 911s with his silver 2013 991 Carrera S! Thank you AGAIN!

Host Billy Hibbs and special guest Vic Elford discuss Porsche racing history, among other topics As you walk into Le Auto Grange, your eyes move quickly to see all the memorabilia, posters, signs, and cars on display. For any car lover, it is heaven! This 6,000-plus square foot plus garage is styled after a French car barn. The walls are littered with motorsports history and movie memorabilia of the 60s. This collection alone is incredible and would take at least an hour to look at and read. For this event, he had three special cars on display: a Jaguar E-type, a Lamborghini Miura S, and a Corvette Split-Window Coupe, in addition to the Porsche 908, which remained under cover as the festivities began. Finally, for us gearheads, you are drawn to his car lift and shop area. The event really kicked off right after lunch, with a great video tribute to guest of honor Vic Elford. The film was a combination of races, interviews, and history of Vic and Porsche, appropriately in tune with 60s music! I want a copy of that! Right after that our host conducted an interview with Vic Elford. Although many years had passed since his last race, his memory of individual races, rallies, cars, and co-drivers was incredible. He mentioned that he had a photographic memory, and within

a minute or two, it seemed quite obvious. Vic spent at least an hour reliving great races of the late 60s, cars driven, and his first drives and races in those early 911s! Following the interview, Billy and Vic began the live auction with all proceeds benefiting Maverick Region’s charity, the Hope House. Vic brought several items for auction, which included prints and model cars, all of which he offered to sign personally. We also had a beautiful necklace offered by Maurice Efune of Ascot Diamonds; a Toddler 911 provided by Park Place Porsche; and tools (Snap On of course) by Billy.

Dr Kurt Reuland of Tyler was a major contributor to the success of the auction benefitting the Hope House. We greatly appreciate the enthusiasm of our Tyler-area members! The auction could not have gone better! Because of Tyler attendees and club members, we raised almost $4,500 for the Hope House! Wow!!! Great job! Once the auction was over, we then moved toward the 908, which had remained covered up to this point. Vic actually drove this car in a race in Austria in 1968 (the Zeltweg 500 km), so when the car was unveiled, you could see the glimmer in Vic’s eye. The car looked spectacular! After a few more minutes of questions and answers, Billy, our gracious host, along with his son Stratton, fired up the 908. Because of the required starting sequence, it

took several minutes to crank, but once it did, the car roared to life! After that, the event began coming to a close. Vic graciously manned a table and began signing the 908 pics provided for all attendees. For me, he also signed a set of original Porsche 908 tires and a Porsche racing banner. I was pumped!! Vic could not have been a better guest for this event. Sadly, Ron Wakefield, for whom the Tyler Junior College scholarship was named, could not make the event due to a recent car accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him. Finally, words can’t describe the gratitude we share as members to our wonderful hosts, Billy, Tisa, and Stratton Hibbs. Because of Billy’s generosity and desire to improve our community, this event was made possible. Tyler Junior College will now have an endowed scholarship in the name of Ron Wakefield, and Maverick Region’s charity the Hope House will benefit from our great auction. I also want to thank all the sponsors in Tyler, the vendors, and Charlie Davis (for photos that accompany this article) who helped make this event possible. It was first class!! As a Porsche lover, I will never forget meeting, listening to, and talking with Vic Elford. As Linda Bambina’s husband Alan famously said, “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people!” Enjoy the Ride!

Tire Rack Street Survival: Performance Drivers’ Ed for Teens By Gareth Maurice, Region Vice President

O

Photos by the Author

ver 200,000 kids are hurt in car accidents each year, and more than 5,000 of them will be killed. There is a good chance one or the other will happen to someone we know. Accidents can become mere incidents if those involved are educated on what to do. Recently PCA became involved with the Tire Rack Street Survival program for teenagers. Aligning themselves with Michelin, other sponsors, and local volunteers, the program educates teens aged 15-21 on how to handle their vehicle during emergency situations. Wanting to learn more, I reached out to PCA Nation-

well as when and when not to brake! The slalom course is always a favorite as they learn about weight transfer and how to safely pilot the huge 4,000- to 5,000-pound weapons under their control. Teens are funny. I think they all believed they knew how to drive before the day started. I mean, they have a license, right? My daughter was no different. She attended this course in 2013 when it was put on by the local BMW CCA in Fort Worth. The morning started as, “Why do I have to go to this?” and ended with, “Is there a second day?” I know she is now a better driver as a result, and told me over dinner one night how she actually had to use the emergency lane change maneuver one day. She was proud and is now confident in her abilities. With this in mind, our local Maverick Region is

al and the local BMW Car Club of America. My goal was to learn about the program and how to host one of our own, so Bruce McQuaid and I attended the event in Mesquite on Sunday, September 28. What a truly fantastic group of people, who are all donating the day in order to help teenagers become better drivers. The day begins with a classroom session explaining what to expect, followed by hours behind the wheel of THEIR car with an instructor by their side. The kids learn what it feels like to control a slide on the watered down skid-pad! They learn emergency lane change maneuvers at speed, as

interested is hosting an event or two in 2015, and you will be hearing more about the specific events as they approach. The success of the class is determined by the volunteers. Getting the kids to attend is easy. If you would like to be an Instructor, help in the classroom, or can even donate a day to help with course set up, please keep us in mind as the program details roll out in further articles. Your teens need your support! Visit http://streetsurvival.org to learn more.

Homegrown Poetry: When I Am An Old Sports Car Owner By Clay Perrine

Adapted from “When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple” by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old sports car owner . . . I shall wear Nomex and sunscreen, And carry an old helmet with me. I shall spend my social security on racing fuel and tires, I will sit in my garage And listen to hot engines tick as they cool. I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night. And race my old car through the countryside Ignoring speed limits If my old bones will allow. And when people come to call, I will smile and nod 24 November

As I walk past weed filled gardens to the garage To show them my freshly waxed fender. I will wrench and sweat and wear grease on my face as if it were a jewel. And I will be an embarrassment to all, Who have not yet found the peace in being free And the joy of a four wheel drift In a old friend made of metal and rubber and plastic Who will wait forever For the kind of person I will be When I am old.

Maverick Monthly Social: Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse By Frank Briggs Photos courtesy Stephanie Ho

W

ith about 50 Mavericks in attendance at Uncle Buck’s Restaurant, you could call the September Monthly Social another huge success. Something that continues to be evident is that 25 to 30 percent of our attendance is made up of new members, as well as long term members that have discovered the fun of another Maverick Monthly Activity for the first time.

and are already attending their first Monthly Social. They are: Greg and Brenda Dranow, Cindy Bliss, and Hossein Bagashahi. Way to go brand new members!!! We also had a large number of attendees who joined our ranks just this year. They are Jouni Hiltunen, who joined in January and is attending his fifth Monthly Social; Mark Berry, who joined us in May attending his second Monthly Social; John and Charlotte Dumford, who recently joined and are already attending their second Monthly Social; and Amanda and David Price who joined in February and attending their third Social. A warm welcome to all of those 2014 Mavericks. Keep it up – we enjoy seeing you.

New members George and Breda Shelton with Mark Berry I would be remiss if I didn’t note that the Monthly Social has become a long-distance affair as well. This month we enjoyed the company of Robbert Van Bergeiki, visiting from overseas as a guest of John and Charlotte Dumford, and Kitty and Jacques Krielen, who spend six months a year in Haarlem, The Netherlands and six months here with their Texas Maverick friends. A big welcome to the long distance travelers!!!

New members Dennis Fisher (left) and Bob Kramer flank Region President John Hamilton Our gathering included eleven Mavericks who joined in 2014 and are diving into the social scene with both feet. They include Chris Reedy, who joined in May and has made every Monthly Social (that’s 5) since then. Congrats Chris!!! I was also impressed by the number of Mavericks that joined this month

Right to Left: New members Terry and Karen Barker with son Caleb 26 November

“International” members Kitty and Jacques (Jack) Krielen Another sign of the continuing success of this gathering are the number of folks who have been members for some time, and have discovered the fun associated with our monthly social activity. They are Caleb, Karen, and Terry Baker, Dennis Fisher, and Bob Kramer, all attending for the very first time. It was also great to see George and Breda Shelton, who attended their first Maverick Social in February of this year and, after being blessed with a new granddaughter, are back with us in September.

New members Greg and Brenda Dranow If the fun evidenced in the pictures surrounding this article is something you have been missing, please consider joining us the third Thursday evening of each month for a great time with your extended Porsche family. This month we will be at the Silver Fox in Grapevine. Until then . . . Happy Motoring!
