Prez Says by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President

O

ur annual Parade issue is finally here – I wish there was some way we could truly communicate how much fun it is, but this will just have to do! Another event my family and I just enjoyed was RoundUp. This year it was at Possum Kingdom Lake, about a half hour Northwest of Mineral Wells. We all had such a good time there, and I was trying to figure out why it seemed like so much fun. It finally came to me that at so many of our events, there is a lot of structure and a strict schedule to make sure things run smoothly. Autocrosses, Time Trials and Drivers Ed events all must be timemanaged so that participants can fully enjoy the events. But at Round Up, even though there are events that are scheduled, the pace is just so much more laid back.

. . . cheaper, closer, and doesn’t require vacation days. . . Another difference is the amount of time you get to spend with the others. I love going to the Happy Hours, but for me, they seem to be too short. I talked to around 50 people at the last one, but only got a few minutes with each one. At RoundUp I was able to spend hours with various people, while doing various fun activities, and really felt like I got to know people a lot better than before.

And finally, RoundUp is great for the whole family. We not only took Jasmine, but brought Geneva Spreen along with us so Jasmine would have someone her age to play with. The biggest challenge at that point was getting clothes for 4 people and toys for 2 people into a 911 Cab! We had clothes and towels stuffed into every cubic inch of the vehicle! So next year, try and remember to sign up for RoundUp – it is a unique experience, and in some ways, even more fun than Parade. It certainly is cheaper, closer, and doesn’t require vacation days! The Autocross and Time Trial season is winding down. After a long summer break, we have TWO time trials back to back at Mineral Wells. The first day is the annual Leadfoot Reunion, on October 5th, where we invite autocrossers and time trialers of years past to come out and show us what they remember. The second day is a rare opportunity for our Sunday-only crowd to try out a Time Trial. Our final Autocross (#6) is on Saturday, October 19th, at Mineral Wells, so if you need season points, make sure to show up for it! We also have the Porsche Lunches in Bedford, Plano, and Addison, and a Happy Hour on October 17th, if you prefer the social events. And on the 26th is the Swap Meet at Zim’s. Bring out everything in your garage, and trade it for stuff out of other peoples’ garages. At least that’s what I do! We’ve got something for everyone, so come on out, and join the fun!

Because I Said So by Wendy Shoffit, Editor

O

h my goodness…is it really October already? I can’t believe I only have 2 more issues to put together until Matt Platts takes over the editorial reins. We’ve been talking about some of the changes he wants to make to Slipstream. I’m sure you’ll be looking forward to it, as I will. This month, finally, is our Boise Parade coverage. As is true for every event, I had way too many pictures (hundreds) to try to squeeze in, so I tried to be selective and pick the best ones to tell the whole story. The only bad thing is that the pictures just can’t convey the level of fun and excitement of the week. They just can’t do it justice. The same goes for Round-Up. If only I could find a way to bottle the euphoria from these events, I would be rich and be able to buy one of those yummy Carrera GTs! As it is, I find myself lacking the words to convey the experience when trying to talk others into attending. Now, for the most important part of the issue... which happens to come at the back. It’s time for you all to vote for the 2003 Maverick Region Board. See page 26 for the official ballot. If you are not planning to attend Founder’s Day (another wonderful Maverick event), please make a copy of the ballot and mail it to our Secretary, Andy Mears. His address is printed on the ballot. I look forward to seeing you all at an event soon!

Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Secretary

T

he September board meeting had a great turnout. Pre-meeting dinner and dessert were much appreciated by everyone. President James Shoffit began the meeting just after 7 PM. Slipstream advertising rates will be increasing for the next year and notices will be sent to all advertisers in the month of September. The increase will be approximately 15%. Dennis Chamberlain reported on the success of the Colleyville happy hour. Also, we’re looking forward to upcoming happy hours including Moonlight at the Oasis and Sea Grill. Much thanks goes to Dennis’s efforts in building a more active region. Teri Davis reported on the August Round-Up/Retreat at Possum Kingdom Lake. Everyone had a good time in the sun, water and boat rides with Captain Bill Dugan. Keith Olcha gave an update on the progress of the September DE. Registration has been completed and everything is ready including the Saturday night cookout. A motion was passed to purchase end-of-year driving trophies and awards to be given at the November Founder’s Day dinner. Meeting was closed just after 8:30. The next board meeting is scheduled for October 9 and will be held again at the Shoffits. 8

Happy Hour at the Railhead Smokehouse

W

orking in Ft. Worth usually means an hour or more drive to the Happy Hour restaurant, through traffic, so I was delighted when some wonderful person scheduled the gathering at the Railhead Smokehouse on 121. I don’t know who it was – but THANKS! The timing Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Dee Lersch, and Mark Gluck couldn’t have been better either as I had a serious case of withdrawal from not having seen any of my PCA friends since the last DE, and the next one was in September.

Patti and Steve Hensel

About 50 PCA members and guests filled the bar, including the Lapps from Austin – Mike races and is the Chief Driving Instructor

for Hill Country and we’ll be seeing Sandy in her new red Boxster at MSR DE events.

Lanean brought her newly acquired red 1987 944 turbo, ready to be ooooed and ahhhhed over, which we did. Aside from our group, the place was almost empty - the parking lot full of Porsches was a cool picture.

. . . a serious case of withdrawal . . . Lots of news and interesting conversations – some folks had been to Parade, Monda had been to a racing school, there were new members, new engines, new cars.….. If you wanted to eat, you picked up your food in a service line, and rejoined the crowd in the bar. Really nice – you didn’t have to miss out on conversations because you had to sit and be served.

Dennis and Karen Poquiz

Rumor has it that we could have more of these on the Ft. Worth side of the area if someone would volunteer to set them up – so here’s an idea – let Dennis know what you think about Joe T Garcia’s (stockyards downtown Ft. Worth for those who might not know). For those that enjoy the fruit of the vine, in the fall, a wine establishment now on Main Street in Grapevine will be opening a location in Southlake, complete with the facilities for wine tastings. Speaking of wine… I occasionally scan the social events for the Hill Country and Lone Star Regions – Hill Country does regular wine tasting evenings before F1 races - they even call it the “F1 Wine Tasting Series”. Hmmmm – ‘food’ for thought. Anybody interested in similar events?

Thanks to all who attended the Smokehouse happy hour – your company was the ‘fix’ I needed to get me through to September. You just can’t beat the variety of people we have in our club. See you on the track, or the next Happy Hour!

Beeline to Boise by Don Breithaupt

D

ay 1: Ted Morgan (Maverick’s newest member) & I hit the interstate in Comfort way before daylight, destination Pueblo, CO. Three hours and 270 miles later (you see, the speed limits are higher in west Texas) we turned off I-10 and headed north. It’s hard for a native Texan to admit, but not all of Texas is beautiful & that part is NOT. At a quick fuel stop in Pecos, the guys at the service station said the highway from Pecos to Vaughn, NM was never patrolled just in case we wanted to make a little extra time. We did. After Vaughn, the scenery improved, we picked up I-25, traffic stayed very thin, & we cruised on into Pueblo without incident. The first thing we noticed when we stopped for the night was how much cooler the weather was.

get un-lost, Eric called and said he had somehow ended up in downtown Ogden. We understood completely. I told Eric we were also lost and to just try and find the motel. After a couple of loop-d-loops we found our destination and Eric pulled up right behind us. About an hour later Bob pulled in. His comment about the construction and confusion was classic. It was great having dinner with friends, talking about the day’s trip and of course, those wonderful Porsche cars.

. . .understand why James seems strange. . . Day 3: We didn’t have all that far to go to Boise so we decided to do a little sightseeing and headed out to Promontory Point where the east and west railroads were joined with a golden spike. It was very interesting even though the spike has been removed and replaced with an un-golden one. After a short stop at the Thikol Rocket Museum and a few great photos of the cars and the rockets, we headed for Boise.

Day 2: We knew that if everything was running as planned, Eric Erz was somewhere ahead of us & Bob Knight somewhere behind. We were heading for a meet-up in Ogden, UT. Driving through Denver is like driving through Houston. If you sit there long enough, traffic will actually move forward and it did. It’s just something you have to endure, there’s no reasonable way around.

Once we crossed into Idaho, we had several demonstrations of just how good a Valentine 1 radar detector really is as Eric picked up radar, how many and where before anyone else even got a signal. The rest of us now have Valentine 1's on our Christmas lists. Even though we had a couple of close calls with the DPS, we arrived in Boise unstopped and unticketed and really enjoyed the trip.

After Denver there was no more traffic. In fact, after Laramie, WY there wasn’t anything at all except miles and miles of miles and miles. We arrived in Rock Springs, WY, birthplace and ancestral home of our President, James Shoffit, in good time (now that I’ve seen it, I understand why James seems strange at times). Rock Springs was a happening place. The wind had died down to about 75 MPH and all the local citizens were out enjoying the unusual weather. We ate lunch at Wendy’s, which in Rock Springs has a special meaning, & then headed toward Ogden. The scenery got better and better.

When you leave the interstate and head into downtown Boise, you go down a long hill. Taxi Breithaupt & Linda Knight (who wimped out and flew) were watching for us from the hotel and said all the Porsches coming down the hill made a very impressive sight. One turn into the parking garage and we had arrived. GREAT TRIP, GREAT FRIENDS, GREAT CARS

My Views of Parade ‘02 by Wendy Shoffit

T

wo years ago when James and I were at our first Porsche Parade in Sacramento, we heard that the 2002 Parade was going to be in Boise.“Boise?” we said.“Why on earth would we ever want to go to BOISE?” Well, after this summer, we are no longer asking. It is such a delightful and quaint place to visit. The people are very friendly and the downtown area is extremely clean. It was amazing to see the facilities available to us. Thanks to the Parade staff who put on a wonderful event. Everything was well organized and we all had a great time.

Generally, all Parades follow the same sort of schedule. It begins with the welcome party, typically with German cuisine and an oompah band. It’s pretty much the only time I ever get to eat my fill of bratwurst, sauerkraut, and spaetzle. This year’s variety was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, the party wouldn’t be the same without the Maverick Region flair. As a salute to Idaho, Taxi Breithaupt encouraged many of us to create our own versions of

. . .ice cream shaped to look like a baked potato. . . “potato hats.” We got a few stares and weird looks, but most people got a kick out of them (once they realized what we were wearing). As a special treat, the mayor of Boise came and spoke. Not only was the mayor thrilled with our presence, but also so were many of the shop owners and the police department. It seems as though our little group increased their ticket revenue a bit during our stay. After the welcome party, the teenage attendees enjoyed their own private dessert party. Until this year, there were no organized events for them to get to know each other. About 20 teens came together and had a ball, proving the get together should be duplicated next year. The second “official” day of Parade is always the concours d’ elegance. This year it was held at the beautiful veteran’s hospital. There was, as always, a stunning array of Porsche excellence. In addition to all the “normal” cars, one of the cars on display was a 1952 356 America Roadster. Only 16 of these cars were produced (11 remain) and it will probably be the only time that I will ever get to see one. It was quite a sight. Unfortunately, not a single Maverick member entered his or her car in the concours, but c’est la vie…we still enjoyed the show! The concours award banquet is the most formal one of the week. I guess if you spend weeks (or more) cleaning up your car, you want to spend at least a little extra time cleaning yourself up! The food, once again, was fabulous. Not only are the concours awards presented that evening, but also all of the national awards, including Region of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, Newsletter, etc. This was the first year in awhile that Maverick Region hasn’t won a major award. Just wait until next year, though… The day following the concours is usually the rally. James and I have never entered a Parade rally and this year was no different. The combination of 4+ hours riding in uncomfortable racing seats with hot weather, no air conditioning, and devious rally masters has just not appealed to us…yet. Plenty of Mavericks entered, however, and 16

did well in the placings. Out of 141 cars (that finished), our very own Bob and Linda Knight won 4th place! Not only that, Don and Taxi Breithaupt trophied at 23rd. First time Parade attendees and new rallyists, Bill and Nancy Dugan, probably ended up with the best souvenir, though. While navigator Bill was trying to figure out the right way to “Frozen Dog,” driver Nancy took a break…right into a woodcarver’s shop. She returned a few minutes later with her very own birdhouse. While the carefree Dugans placed out of trophy range, they accomplished their three tasks: to finish, to not finish last, and to stay married! Good job! While the rally was going on, many of the kids were at the historic Boise Train Depot practicing for the RC autocross. As if that weren’t enough of a draw, the depot was the site chosen for the ice cream social. Participants had their choice of a make-your-own sundae or the local special – ice cream shaped to look like a baked potato (but it sure didn’t taste like one). Maverick Alex Philipp did extremely well in the RC competition, as did Eric Erz. Eric surely would have taken top time (instead of 2nd), but just before his runs, one of his wiring contacts broke and a soldering iron was nowhere to be found. Eric vows to return next year to re-claim his throne. The banquet for this year’s rally wasn’t held on the evening of the event. They waited until the following day for their presentations (making sure all the scores were right). The menu was a “Taste of Idaho,” featuring some of the area’s culinary specialties. Although I was a bit nervous about the food, we all ended up pleased.

The following 2 days was the autocross. Many Mavericks entered this event and did quite well. The site was the Police Training grounds, about 11 miles from downtown Boise. Spectator parking was horrible, but the course was lots of fun. Rather than there being only cones marking the course, we used parts of the police “city streets” training. This included several 90-degree turns and a slightly banked sweeper. The most challenging part of the course to do right was the finish. You see, the finishing timing reflector light was * exactly * on the right exit line. As you can imagine, it got hit a few times. Once by our very own timing and scoring chairman (and my husband), James Shoffit, now nicknamed “Mr. Excitement.” If that wasn’t exciting enough, the organizers arranged for an Idaho State Police car and motorcycle to be onsite. The kids and adults alike enjoyed watching the police cruiser (with siren and lights going) tackle the autocross course. I’m not sure how the officer explained to his supervisor how the word “Goodyear” got scrubbed off the side of his tires. When the kids weren’t watching the adult autocross action, they were participating in their own. They rode bicycles, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, strollers, or just used foot power through a simple, but extremely tight, course. Two Maverick kids participated, Alex Philipp and my daughter, Jasmine. Even though her suspension was not set up right, Jasmine pedaled her heart out. During one of

The final evening’s festivities involved the Victory Banquet, where they gave out the tech quiz trophies and, oh yeah, the trip to Germany (given out every year, just not to me). This evening featured entertainment by the Boise Highlanders, a festive bagpipe band. I never thought I would enjoy bagpipes, but I certainly did.

Being the trooper (and competitor) that she is, she brushed herself off, got back on her bike, and completed her final run…faster than her others! That’s my girl! Lanean Hughes, who was instrumental in many of the kids’ activities, presented adorable medallions made by Karen Erz, which the kids just loved.

The autocross awards banquet was held later that day. The evening featured a Basque meal and a demonstration of Basque dancing. Idaho is home to the largest Basque population outside of their homeland in Spain and France. The entertainment was fun to watch and the food was delicious, although I avoided the lamb. The awards were exciting, though, as most Mavericks who entered brought home a trophy. It was also interesting, that in every instance, the women placed higher than their male counterparts. In some

instances (Jan & Nancy) the times were even faster than the men, not that we’re counting or anything! The men had their vengeance on the following day at the tech quiz, where the men in most cases got more questions right and placed higher than their female counterparts. Ed Mayo in the early 911/912 class not only took his class, but took top score overall. Even the younger kids got in on the tech quiz action, where Alex Philipp

Oh yeah, I almost forgot…Maverick Region will be hosting our OWN Parade in 2004 in downtown Fort Worth. The Parade chair is Jan Mayo and we are looking forward to this opportunity. We need your help, though. This is (obviously) a huge event that needs lots of people to volunteer. If you have an interest in helping out in * any * area, contact Jan or me (see page 4 for all contact information) and we will happily get you connected with the right event chair. We look forward to seeing you, maybe in Tampa. You’ve just got to be there to understand!

I’ve only just covered the highlights of the Porsche Parade events. There are so many other activities that fell within this single week, including a golf tournament, a 3.5 K walk/5 K run, a walking rally, an art show, seminars, and loads of tech sessions. It is impossible for me to cover everything that happened. The only way you will know how much fun there is to have at Parade is to go to one. Next year’s will be held at the Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa, Florida. I can’t wait!

The day following the autocross, Friday, was an unusual planned activity for the group, an actual Parade through downtown Boise. This was only the 2nd time in the 47 years of the Porsche Parade that this was done. While James and I weren’t in one of the cars, we had a great vantage point to take pictures and see all of them pass by. It was quite a sight to see over 200 Porsches driving side by side through the streets of Boise!

2002 Round-Up

T

he weekend of August 23-25 we had a great Round-Up at The Cliffs Resort on Possum Kingdom Lake. In fact, it was our first roundup since we organized the 1990 Roundup in Fort Worth, we think. We’d like to thank the Davis’, Teri and Charlie, for a great weekend! We arrived somewhat later than expected on Friday night but got an early start on Saturday morning with the breakfast buffet. The first event was a challenging team tech quiz created by Keith Olcha. It included technical, historic questions and Maverick Region trivia. We were put on “Mr. Ed’s Team” with the Mayos, Teri Davis, and Bob Bianconi. Our team won, thanks largely to the presence of the tech

Sunday began early with preparation for the Shine & Show Concours. There were 4 Boxsters, Davis’ 914, Shoffit’s and Mayo’s 911s, and our 1965 356 SC Coupe, the “Grey Ghost”. We were surprised when we cleaned up on the awards; we had done minimal cleaning. We attributed the win to the smallest deductions for age points as we hadn’t done much “shine”.

After checkout, it was off on the Hare and Hound Rally, with Teri and Charlie as the hares. They were appropriately in costume with hats with large rabbit ears. They got a 10 minute head start. Then the hounds started their pursuit at one minute intervals. We were the last to leave. The distance was advertised to be approximately 56 miles; the time limit was 90 minutes. We had to answer 22 questions about things we saw along the way. We checked out historic buildings/markers….an old jail built in 1880, a marker documenting the first couple to marry under the laws of the Republic of Texas in 1836, etc. Winners in Hare and Hound rallies are

from their house at the top of the cliff down to their large boathouses. We cruised to Hell’s Gate and saw where the locals gathered for partying….nesting their boats. It was a perfect place to jump in and cool off….and we did! And then we returned to the beach and enjoyed a wonderfully cold watermelon.

Just short of two hours, we completed the rally in the town of Strawn and Charlie sent us on to Mary’s Café for lunch …..and were we ever surprised, we were the first to complete the rally…and we came in first! It was a great weekend with great people. The “Grey Ghost”, and passengers, enjoyed the weekend on the road again.

Hydraulic Clutch Master Cylinder - Part 3: Installation By Michael Wingfield

Master Cylinder Installation

9. Remove the right front wheel. 10. Bleed the right front brake caliper until the fluid in the forward-end of the reservoir falls below the blue hose that feeds the clutch master cylinder, but do NOT empty the brake fluid reservoir completely. Note: The brake fluid reservoir has a partition inside. You can bleed the fluid out from the front partition (via the right front brake caliper), which feeds the clutch, without compromising the level for the brake system. However, keep a close watch on the fluid level to ensure that you do not expose the brake master cylinder ports to air.

1. Attach the new fluid feed blue hose onto the new clutch master cylinder. Attaching the new hose before installing the clutch master cylinder to the firewall eliminates the risk of breaking the small plastic fitting for the hose on the master cylinder. Figure 6 illustrates the new clutch master cylinder with the new fluid feed blue hose attached. Also shown are the new gasket and the pushrod lock nut.

Figure 6

. . . a pressure bleeder makes bleeding the clutch slave quick and easy . . . 11. Remove the hose clamp from the clutch master cylinder blue hose feed on the side of the brake master cylinder.

2. Remove the lock nut from the pushrod of the old clutch master cylinder and attach it to the pushrod of the new clutch master cylinder. Run the nut down the pushrod as far as possible.

12. Use a utility knife to carefully cut the blue hose off the brake fluid reservoir fitting. Carefully cutting the hose prevents the possibility of breaking off the fitting or creating stress fractures in the brake fluid reservoir. Expect a very small amount of fluid to drip from the hose. 13. Route the new blue hose from the top of the clutch master cylinder to the brake fluid reservoir, and trim the length to fit. The hose should be about 12 inches in length. The length of the new hose I purchased was 29 inches so I had plenty of hose. Remember, measure twice and cut once.

3. Install the new gasket to the firewall. 4. Install the clutch master cylinder into the firewall and attach loosely with the spring washers and mounting bolts. Leaving the clutch master cylinder loose will allow you to manipulate the orientation until all fittings are secure.

14. Attach the blue hose to the brake fluid reservoir with a hose clamp. Bleed the Clutch System

5. Insert the pushrod into the clutch pedal clevis in the foot well. Run the pushrod into the clevis as far as possible initially. The pushrod position will get set later after bleeding the system when setting the clutch pedal free play. Note: the pushrod can come out of the bellows. The pushrod is a separate piece from the piston and is held in position by the bellows until the pushrod is connected to the clutch pedal clevis.

To complete the clutch master cylinder installation, you must bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Unfortunately, in order to properly bleed the system, you must access the clutch slave cylinder bleeder valve, which is not easily accessible and under the car. 1. Fill the brake fluid reservoir with fresh fluid. Attach a pressure bleeder if you have one. (I highly recommend one for bleeding the clutch lines)

6. Attach the high-pressure line to the forward-end of the clutch master cylinder. By leaving the clutch master cylinder loose (step 4 above), you can position the line more easily into the opening. Note: this step takes time and patience to get the proper alignment. A pair of very small hands also works well here since the available space for manipulating the end of the line and the end of the clutch master cylinder is minimal. Take care to not crossthread the line nut in the clutch master cylinder.

Note: At this point the clutch master cylinder is installed in the car. However, the fluid feed blue hose is not yet connected. We need to remove some brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir before connecting the hose.

3. Remove the heat shield (if applicable) that protects the starter.

7. Tighten the clutch master cylinder firewall mounting nuts to secure the clutch master cylinder to the firewall.

2. Remove the bottom pans from below the engine.

8. Jack up the front of the car and secure it on jack stands. Figure 7 20

4. Disconnect the wires to the starter and remove the starter. The clutch slave cylinder

sits above the starter as illustrated in Figure 7. Within Figure 7, label “A” ” identifies the bleeder value on the end of the clutch slave cylinder, barely visible but not accessible; label “B” identifies the starter blocking access to the clutch slave cylinder. Removing the starter allows easy access to the bleeder valve on the clutch slave cylinder. 5. With the starter removed, bleed the clutch slave cylinder. Figure 8 illustrates the access to the clutch slave cylinder bleeder valve with the starter removed. Within Figure 8, label “A” identifies the bleeder value on the end of the clutch slave cylinder; label “B” identifies the disconnected starter wires. The large black cylinder in the right of the photograph is the clutch slave cylinder, now easily visible and accessible with the starter removed.

6. Check the system for leaks. 7. After bleeding the clutch hydraulic system, set the clutch pedal free play. Adjust the distance between the pushrod and clutch master cylinder piston by rotating the pushrod in the clutch pedal clevis. Set this free play such that the lowest point of the clutch pedal footpad travels one-half inch before engaging the piston. 8. Tighten the pushrod-locking nut firmly against the clutch pedal clevis to secure the clutch pedal free play. 9. Install the starter and connect the starter wires. 10. Attach the starter heat shield (if applicable). 11. Attach the engine bottom pans. 12. Install the right front wheel. 13. Remove the jack stands and lower the car.

14. Reconnect any hoses and other components removed in the engine compartment (Part Two: Removal – step 1) that allowed access to the clutch master cylinder.

Figure 8 Using a pressure bleeder makes bleeding the clutch slave quick and easy. It also helps prevent frothing the fluid caused by actuating the clutch pedal when priming the clutch master cylinder. Without a pressure bleeder, you bleed the clutch in the same manner you bleed the brakes. However, unlike the brake pedal, you will need to pull up on the clutch pedal after depressing it to the floor until you fill the system with fluid. Pay particular attention to the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir as to not allow the fluid to drop below the level of the fluid feeder blue hose to the clutch master cylinder.

That completes the hydraulic clutch cylinder inspection, removal, and installation. After driving the car a few miles, check the clutch pedal free play once again and adjust if necessary. If the system did not bleed out all air, driving the car can help purge the clutch master cylinder of air. Recall that the clutch master cylinder receives fluid from the top, so any remaining air can self bleed back to the brake fluid reservoir. Otherwise, you may find yourself back under the car and bleeding the clutch slave cylinder again. Corner Balancing Tech Session By Doug Molny

The scales set up on the alignment lift. "tubular bars" are faster acting than solid bars. Adjustable spring plates were then installed. These are designed for torsion bar cars; this is the best way to lower and raise a car. They also allow weight balance so that the rear of the car performs the same in a left turn as in a right turn. The ride height and corner weight can be varied by a turn of a screw along with toe and camber adjustments. I caution you that these are expensive upgrades as the parts alone exceeded $2,000.

The C-2S 993 was used for this session on corner balancing and was adjusted for alignment and corner. In the pictures below you can see that we were given a cursory look under a Boxster as Jimmy answered general questions from the participants. We then moved on to the alignment area for the corner weighing session. We placed Noby's Boxster S on the scales and it weighed 3,081 pounds. No adjustments were necessary as the Boxster is close to

The recent additions facilitate a greater ability to fine tune the suspension which was completed the following week. We stayed within the PCA "G" stock class regulations for Club Racing. Weltmeister sway bars were also added which control rolling around the roll center (also called "anti-roll bars"). Weltmeister hollow torsion bars and new bushings were installed to stiffen the ride and reduce mass and weight in the suspension. These torsion bars also provide a constant spring rate and ensure that both sides of the car are equally suspended. Stock bars are at an effective rate of 18.8 mm front and 24.1 mm rear, the new torsion bars are 23.5 mm front and 31mm rear. It is generally accepted that

PCA Club Race specs require a minimum total weight of 2,552 lbs. in "G" stock class for a 1979 911 SC Euro without driver. We then weighed the car with driver, helmet, with approximately onehalf tank of gas and ended up at 2,652. lbs total. Our intention here is to balance the car so the weight is equalized on each wheel when the car is fully loaded. I am optimistic that the changes we have made will result in a better handling car, balanced, with improved input to the driver under heavy braking, turn-in loads and drift control. There is a plethora of available information on racing suspension. I recommend "Competition Car Suspension", Design Construction Tuning by: Allan Staniforth.
