ounders’ Day! Great party, ladies in fancy dresses, pull out the tux for the guys, November 11th, right? Wrong!! Try this on for size. Great party, ladies in fancy island dresses, guys in Hawaiian shirts on November 4th. That's right; change of date and change of “dress code.” You've got to stay flexible with this group. The date changed to get just the right location. The traditional dress code changed because, hey, why not? It sounds like fun! So, if Founder's Day hasn't made your social calendar because it was just too formal, we have solved that problem for you. One of the traditions that hasn't changed is that we will have the election for next year’s officers. The election looks to be just as hotly contested as it has been the last few times. James Shoffit has volunteered to run for President, Mark Gluck for Vice President, Bob Kuykendall for Treasurer and Charlie Davis for Secretary. As always, there is the option for write-in candidates. Having almost two years perspective, I appreciate the time and effort these folks will volunteer on behalf of the club. Once again, we will attempt to vote on and pass some amendments to our bylaws. Some of these changes have been recommended by the Executive committee and others have been placed on the ballot by club members. Some are merely dotting I's and crossing T's and others merit more serious thought. If you’re not usually there, I hope to see you at Founder's Day. If you normally attend, I'll look forward to seeing you again. Well, I'm really proud of myself. I didn't think I could get through the whole article without even one reference to getting "leid".

Maverick Minutes by Jan Mayo
T
he dessert cookies have started around the table so Rocky takes the opportunity to start the meeting.
Mark Gluck says our events are insured through September and that he has October in the works. He asks that event chairs save the signed insurance waivers and give them to him for storage.
Bill Dawson reports that even though it was on a holiday weekend the last DE was a financial break even. He noted that some late white and yellow group entries made planning hard on the registrar and that they are considering a late fee for the future. Unfortunately the ad for the October DE was inadvertently left out of Slipstream (Wendy apologized profusely) and since the opening day for registration was in the very near future the DE committee was going to post an internet blitz and put a banner on the front page of the website. Michael Wingfield continued Bill’s report with the numbers. There were 84 registered for September which is half of a full pack. There is a DE driver survey which was sent to a target audience looking for preferred dates. Rocky interjected some comments from the Zone meeting held the week previously. Per a National Survey sent out a couple years ago, the number one requested event was Driver Education. Some regions do a “Track Sampler” mini-session with instructor. Bill and Michael thought this may be something to think about and will talk over with the rest of the DE committee. Tracey continued to roast Wendy by pointing out that Michael was not individually picked on, that her Wine Tasting event ad was also left out. Her event will accept the first 40 callers and after wine there will be a dinner catered by Macaroni Grill. Founder's Day has been moved to November 4 in order to secure the Doubletree on Midway at LBJ. The evening's plans were discussed but I will leave you to wonder and wait with anticipated breath for her announcement. Just remember, there will be no roasted pig. Advertising collections continue to roll in according to Lisa Steele. Next on the round table was Joe McGlohen's perennial request for either flags or radios. This time it was for radios. Seems they wear out and get dropped and all kinds of “things” just happen to them. There also seems to be some or one (?) missing after loan/rent to another club. This was the perfect opportunity for Rocky to interject some more conversation arising from the Zone meeting. It was noted that if equipment we loan or rent to other clubs is found faulty and an incident occurs and our equipment possibly did not perform it's duty we *could* be found responsible. So it is National's strong suggestion that regions not share their stuff. Due to the wear, loss and damage due to the additional usage and the potential liability we will not be sharing our toys in the future. Back to Joe and his request for money, he was asked if this was in the DE budget and with only one event remaining this year would this not be a possible 2007 DE budget issue rather than a board discussion. Joe will reassess and come back next month with what he needs for the one remaining event. Seating location is everything… Jeff says we have money. Mac's Happy Hour was good according to Dennis Chamberlain. Oct 21 will be Cantina Laredo and October…. ta-daa will be at Speed Zone in Dallas. 8
Wendy was continuing to apologize when it came her turn to speak out loud. She will work with Dennis on future event ads and will ask event chairs to confirm. She needs Parade coverage - who was there and who did what. Pictures??? Charlie? Rocky asked James if he had anything to say about the Zone President's meeting and he said, “No, nothing.” He has updated the timing and scoring on the website though. Bryan Bell continues to be happy with the Time Trial and Autocross attendance. Park Place will be the sponsor for Event #6 and Autobahn is the sponsor for the Charity Autocross. Charlie was wondering, since Bryan drove the Truckster last, was it ok. He hopes so. Charlie and Teri heard from Marge Akimoto, long time member living in Mineral Wells, that Pearl Cowan died. Pearl and Leon Cowan have been Maverick members since 1969. Charlie also reported that Holly Bromberg, of Leland West specialty insurance has also recently died. Teri took over the conversation with her Rally report. She has given money for the last two to Jeff and will have results and pictures for Wendy (who is still muttering “I'm sorry” under her breath). Teri has been in conversation with Sasha Lantz about a rally and car show for MADD. It will be Oct 14 at the Fort Worth Stockyards. This event has huge sponsors and is expecting around 2000 people. You may not know but Teri's oldest son, Tony, was seriously injured a couple months ago when his car was struck head on by a drunk driver. So you see, this event carries extra meaning. Since James hadn't taken notes during the Zone President's meeting Rocky reported on some of the information presented. PCA president Tom Bobbitt attended Bryan Henderson's meeting and gave the zone regions' president's, editors, and interested members in attendance quite an entertaining talk. He shared some of the information gathered on the previously mentioned survey. The Survey Says, the number 1 thing of interest in PCA is Technical Content, number 2 is Panorama and number 3 is the regional newsletter. Reasons why people join and/or remain members is for Driver Education events (both as participant and “want to” participate). The number one reason people are not active or do not renew their membership is “No Time”. Rocky then turned back into Rocky and said that since the December board meeting historically was hosted by the outgoing president did everyone want to drive to his house for dinner. When asked if he meant the one in Colorado, he said, NO, the one in east Louisiana (Quinlan, TX.) That's even farther out than Joel! Watch Slipstream to see where the meeting actually will take place. Conversation reverted back to the Zone meeting topic of speed on club sanctioned tours. James commented that he cannot/will not go on the current slate of tours because Jasmine ends up being tossed around the back seat. Joe McGlohen, as Safety Chairman, requested that no more tours be advertised until he has the opportunity to speak with the tour leaders concerning the speeds and relative safety of the events. The remaining 2006 tours are already advertised (these DID make it in!). With no resolution to the December board meeting location I will report that the October meeting will be at the standard time and place. Meeting adjourned.

From The Driver’s Seat by Wendy Shoffit, Slipstream Managing Editor
T
his issue is one of the most packed ones I can remember. There were sooooo many events to mention and information to put in that I couldn’t put it all in. So, next month you should see coverage of the September DE and maybe some more about the Parade in Portland. It’s funny how 32 pages can get filled so quickly.
As the year winds down, so do many of the events. With the competitive autocross and time trial season over, the Charity Autocross only about a week away (on the 8th) and only one more DE left on the 28th-29th, there are fewer opportunities to drive your car fast. It looks like even the tour season is coming to an end, with the final trip to Arkansas on the 13th-15th. Socials, however, seem to still be going strong. A wine tasting event is coming up on the 21st, which looks to be a good time. Founders’ Day...ahhh... one of my favorites. This year’s event should be too much fun, with a casual island theme. I’ll have to find somewhere *else* to get all gussied up, I suppose. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s probably our biggest social event of the year. It is the annual celebration of our region’s founding. This is when the Autocross, Time Trial, Rally, and other awards are presented. Last year we even had some Drivers’ Education, Club Racing, and Tour recognitions. Not to worry, though. We’ve figured out a good way to not make it last until 2 AM with all the awards and presentations. It’s mostly just a fun, festive event. You won’t want to miss it.
10
Also at Founders’ Day, we usually have a silent auction or raffle set up for our charity. This year in particular is important for the charity because the Hope Shelter has finally reached the ending stage of construction for their new facility and have a move in date of November 15th. The money we raise that night will be sooo needed. Also about the shelter, we need workers NOW for EVERY weekend until that date for cleaning, installations, decorating, and transporting donated furniture. We also need the furniture to be donated, particularly bedroom stuff. So, if you have it, please contact me and I’ll point you to the proper person. Hope to see you soon and hope you are enjoying YOUR view from the driver’s seat as much as I am of mine!

Time Trial #6 and Autocross #6 by Bob Kuykendall
I
can't believe this is the final weekend for Time Trials and Autocrosses in 2006. It seems like only yesterday (March to be exact) that everyone was strapping on those brand new Toyo's and Kumho’s in hopes of turning faster laps than last year and showing their fellow drivers just how Mario-like they could be. Actually, there is one more driving event scheduled for October (the Charity autocross at Pennington) that is purely for fun and won't count for Driver standings. The October autocross will also have a Top Driver runoff for the top ten Men's and Lady's drivers based on final standings from this weekend. So, the gauntlet has been thrown. GENTLEMEN (AND GENTLEWOMEN) START YOUR ENGINES ! So here I am getting up at 5:30 to head out to Mineral Wells for the last time. Only contractors and bass fishermen are up this early on a Saturday morning. Along the way, I make the turn at Weatherford and duck into the pits at a local Citgo for a splash of fuel for both body and car. Think I'll indulge in a good ol' Texas breakfast, consisting of a Dr Pepper and a Mrs. Baird's cherry-fried pie. Umm…..good.
When it's my turn to work the course, I'm assigned to Start/Finish line. Not hard duty until someone impedes another driver, then keeping up with which car is on what lap becomes a bit challenging. But, the final checker flag for the morning session gets waved right before noon. Wendy Shoffit getting the green light. Time for lunch. On Saturday, most Mavericks head out to the local Braum’s for a #1 double-burger combo with fresh-squeezed limeade. Oh, so good. Or, is it just the air conditioning which makes it all taste so great? On Sunday, most folks stop by the Chicken Express for hot (and I do mean right out of the fryer hot) fried chicken, fresh-brewed ice tea, and a fried pie. Hey, we're working hard out there and chasing cones! So, the diets will have to wait.

Pulling into the Paddock area at the MineralRing, I see all the usual suspects- Charlie and the Truxster (is that a rock band?), Bryan Bell and Darron Shaffer setting up the course, Wendy and Andrea taking names and money for the event registration, James unloading the race car
The afternoon goes by quickly with only one run-set per car. So, Time Trial #6 was history by 3:00. Time to set up the course for tomorrow's autocross! Sunday brings many more P-cars to the track. Autocross #6 is the last chance to score points, so the trash talk worsens. Threats of lowering tire pressures turns out to be just that. Again, this is for fun! A whole army of 914's show up early. Those lightweight cars were made for this stuff. Very flingable, lively, and well-balanced in the tight twisties.
Robyn Howard taking the corner at speed. (which has all 5 gears again), Rick Randall doing tech inspections, etc. So nice to have these folks doing all the hard work. They're real pros !
Despite the friendly camaraderie, a little early morning trash talking begins. Jeff Atkins and Wendy Shoffit are neck and neck in class 5. Rick Randall, Chuck Machala, and Mark Steele are vying for top honors in the highly competitive Class 6. This ain't just for bragging rights, folkstrophies are on the line here! But it's all in good fun. Driver's meeting begins promptly at 9:00. Bryan reminds us for the umpteenth time that if we hit the perimeter fence, we get to roll it up and take it home, as you have just bought it. But that never happens. I worry more about people in the Port-a-Johns as cars leave the course. Shouldn't those be a 2-second penalty? The final Time Trial will utilize Course # 3, to be run counter 14

Some interesting non-Porsche cars occasionally find their way here. An old Datsun 2000 roadster makes its way to the grid for some hot laps. A few Corvettes, Subarus, and Mustangs also join the fray. In the paddock area, I notice some odd-looking extra valve stems on Dean Yamada's Corvette. He tells me these are pressure-release valves that automatically release excess pressure as the tires heat up. Pretty cool, which means that you can start off at the optimum psi on the very first run and not worry about coming off the track too hot or greasy. If they just made such a device to replace the driver, I'd be in great shape.
Camaraderie abounds - Chuck McCoy (Car #44) entertains Lisa Steele and Chuck Machala

clockwise with a medium-speed chicane in the back left corner. James Shoffit decided to try the chicane in full sideways mode, but does not recommend it (unless you are a trained professional). Despite a few spins and an occasional DNF, it's just amazing how well organized and safe these events are. This isn't just my opinion, as I hear this constantly from drivers who attend other Club's events. Mike Lockas, Joel Nannis, and others are always keeping a careful eye on safety.
Track walks expose a layout shaped like a four-leaf clover. What was Bryan thinking (or drinking) last night? But looks like fun. A little tight in places, so we will definitely be shagging cones today! As I work corner 3 with Jim Hedderick, I discover that he and his son, David, are from Houston and they run autocrosses with not only PCA, but also SCCA, BMW Club, and others. They enter their silver Boxster in ~35 events a year! They also burn thru some 5-7 sets of tires per year. Now that's some way-too-serious activity, but they obviously love it and are great at it, as both are headed to SCCA Nationals this year. I witness how freely and gladly everyone helps their fellow drivers with needed assistance, tools, and advice. Air gauges, jack pads, tire
assistance, etc. are openly and unselfishly shared among all. What a great bunch of folks and spirit of cooperation. Autocross times are very fast thru the Cloverleaf. David Hedderick takes down the fastest Porsche of the day (75.3) in his non-S Boxster. But Michael Vasey takes TTOD in his silver STI at 73.4. Wow, these guys are quick. But accolades for those drivers who drive consistently well in their lesser horsepower cars: Kevin Hardison in his 914, Mike Lockas and Chuck McCoy in their 944s, and many others. Also, those rapidly improving new drivers, such as newlyweds Christy Dominick & Denny Payne. Alas, I'm going to miss these events during the off-season. The “silly season always brings out new drivers, cars, and suspension setups before next year's driving events and driver schools. The best part is wondering what to do next- those new adjustable sway bars? R-compound tires? A race seat perhaps? And even though some of the faces may change by next season, you can nonetheless expect to see more smiles, help, and genuine pros running these events.

Splat! by Wendy Shoffit and Jan Mayo
R
ecently, we participated in the Hare and Hound Rally. The following are excerpts from our adventure..
(on the rally) J:
So, let me get this straight, we're the Hounds, chasing the Hare. We have to make a choice at each intersection and try to figure out which way the Hare went… sounds easy enough, right?
W: Hey, Jan… do you remember how to do these types of rallies? No? We'd better pay attention this time… [Foreboding music playing in the background]
W: Yeah, but they make it clear because the Hare leaves its mark in the form of lime powder within ~1/4 mile of the intersection.
J:
J:
I expected to see more cars. Chris Alvarado (from Hill Country Region) and Ron Gaubert (from Whiskey Bay Region) will definitely want to get in the car with air conditioning. It's a thousand degrees outside!
So, if we're on track, we'll see the powder and if we're not on track we have to turn around and make another choice at that intersection?
W: Sounds easy enough. Good thing I brought these binoculars. They ought to help me see further ahead, right? J:
Okay, so here's our first intersection. Is this where we make a choice?
W: No, there's a sign that says, “No Outlet,” so it's not an official rally road. How about this road? J:
Nope… that one is a private driveway, it's also not a road. This could get tricky.
W: This one is for sure! 4 ways… only 3 to choose from… Uhhhh…. I'm feeling we should go RIGHT! J: Signing up
I'll reset the trip odometer to make sure we know when to stop looking for the lime powder…
(after the drivers' meeting, ready for the odometer check) J:
Don & Taxi’s car
So, where do we start from?
W: It's here on the map, I'll get you going. No problem. Is this the turn?
W: Uhhh… no, the one we just passed was. Sorry. You can turn around, right? J:
Nah… does the odometer go down if you back up? Whatever!
W: I don't know, but I think we're about to find out. We can work it in to the calculations, no problem. I can't believe I got you lost on the freaking ODOMETER check! I'll do better… Should've paid more attention in the drivers' meeting. J:
Hey, isn't that Chris and Ron changing cars? OH yeah… we knew it would be too hot to handle in a 911 with no air!
W: Okay, turn up the air and let's get started!
J:
SPLAT! Both: SPLAT! There it is! We're on the right track. Now, how about THIS road? J:
Hey, isn't that Chris and Ron's car that just turned? We should wait to see if they turn around. If we don't see them come back, we'll know they're on the right track.
W: Okay… I'm not seeing them… we should go ahead and go that way. Oh shoot! There they are coming back! They were messing with us! Photo by Wendy Shoffit
J:
Brats! Fine! We'll know not to follow them anymore. Hope they can find their way to dinner. [There's that foreboding music again.]
Both: SPLAT! W: Wow… look at all these houses. They're amazing in this area! We'll have to come back sometime. Oh shoot… was that a road? I got so distracted at the scenery I forgot where we were going. Drivers’ meeting led by the two hares. 16
J:
No, we're fine. That road wasn't paved. Not a rally road.
(phone rings)
J:
W: Hello? Travis (Howard)? You and Robin did what? You had a FLAT? OH man. Thank goodness Cathy can come get you. I don't think we could find our way outta here with a map, compass, GPS, and a sherpa. We'll hopefully meet up with you guys at the restaurant. I could use a drink!
After all that, we ended up with a 2nd place trophy. With our total driving distance only 0.4 miles further than Don & Taxi, We had made 1 more wrong turn than they did. Well, that seems like a fitting end. After all the time we followed them? They deserved first! Dave & Jean finished not too much after us having driven a few extra miles, but they seemed to have a good time doing it. We're also glad to see the Howards made it here safely. Cathy is a good daughter. Sign us up for the next rally!
Both: SPLAT! J:
Look at that house! It's bigger than some hotels I've been to.
This is one for the record books. Let's get a margarita!
W: Hey, isn't that Don & Taxi Breithaupt (also from Hill Country)? Which way did they just come from? J:
Didn't we already learn our lesson?
J:
They went right. We'll go straight and see if we find another splat.
W: Oh man, no splat. Turn around. Again. J:
There's Don & Taxi again. We'll be nice and tell them to not go this way. We've followed them for long enough.
W: If you insist. I want that trophy! J:
Okay, so here we are… is that a road or not?
W: I have no idea. I don't see a splat in any direction. We're lost and these stupid binoculars are no help at all. What a waste of time and foot space. J:
I don't know where we were when we last knew where we were so we can't even go back to that.
(phone rings) J:
W: Well, sorta, but I don't think Don & Taxi would do that to us. Okay, now where the heck is this road going? There are like 4 choices we can make!
The victorious Hounds, Don & Taxi Breithaupt. Official mileage for the hare's route was 17.3 miles. The trophy winners were as follows: 1st Place - Don and Taxi Breithaupt did the route in 24.55 miles 2nd Place - Jan Mayo and Wendy Shoffit drove 24.95 miles 3rd Place - Dave and Jean Frick drove 32.04 miles. All mileages show were calibrated to official miles.
Hello, Ron? You guys are lost and need directions to get to the restaurant? And you're asking US ?? Considering that we're really lost, call James and use Chris' super fancy web phone GPS thingy to find your way. We're no help.
W: I guess all that trickery caught up to them, didn't it? (*snicker*) J:
There's Don & Taxi. They're lost, too. I'll pull over and we can chat. Do you guys know which way we need to go? No?
Don: Taxi has her map. Nothing makes sense. We've gone this way and that way and this other way…nothing. J:
I'm tired and thirsty.
W: I'm hungry and hot. I give up. Taxi: Let's just head to the restaurant. Go down this road. It looks like it's only a mile or so away. We're close. W: Yeah, you're right. I'm done. Besides, we haven't seen Dave & Jean Frick since we started the rally! J:
I think they re-did the odometer check. They must have made a wrong turn, too.
W: Oh, so rub it in, will ya! (we make a left with Don & Taxi right behind us) Both SPLAT! ! ! W: Oh man… now we HAVE to finish the rally! J:
Fiiiiine (snarlly voice)
(two seconds later) W: Hey, there's Charlie & Teri! We finished! Whaddya mean? We were like half a mile from the finish and almost gave up? 17

Happy Hour at Mac’s Steaks & Seafood by Dennis Chamberlain

appy Hour at Mac's Steaks and Seafood was held on August 17, 2006. Back in 2001, Mark Gluck mentioned to me that we should try a place called Mac's in Colleyville for a happy hour because he'd heard good things about it and, well, it was close to Mark's house. So for our August 17 (of 2006) happy hour, I decided to go ahead with it. You can't just jump into these decisions.
As it turned out, it was well worth the five year wait. We had a great crowd, including new faces due to the new location. We also had Michael Sorbera, president of the Longhorn Region. Michael drove up from San Antonio just for our happy hour (well, not exactly) and I was fortunate enough to get some good images of his 1993 amazon green pearl effect 964.
The food, service, and prices were all good at Mac's. We'll definitely be returning. Speaking of returning, for our October 19th Michael Sorbera Happy Hour, it's back to Malibu Speed Zone, just off of I-35E and Royal Lane. Hope to see you there.
