hange - Like or not, it’s a way of life. First, the hopefully not-so-noticeable-to-you change is in Slipstream itself. As I’ve mentioned the past couple of months, we have now converted publisher programs from Quark to InDesign. Huge thanks go to Wendy Shoffit for creating the template from which we work every month. Every title, caption, line, box, graphic, credit, shading and page number was manually, lovingly, recreated. Now we are learning all the tricks and shortcuts of a new program. The keystrokes that came quickly and instinctively now have to be found and relearned, fingers retrained.

The next two changes affect you, happy Maverick readers. The October Concours previously intended to take place Saturday prior to the Charity Autocross at TMS will now be happening in November at the Village at Colleyville. This is a gorgeous setting and will provide great photo opportunities for your Beauty. Plus you now have a couple extra weeks to fine tune that polishing. Look at page 7 for the new information from Bob Bianconi. The other change is the October 7 Sunday Drive. Unfortunately the rains we have enjoyed all summer have wiped out one of the bridges so the train is no longer running. Clint Blackman is scrounging frantically for another location. The starting place and time remain the same but the rest of the day will be an adventure (see below). If you can’t make this drive the November Sunday Drive will be to Tyler. See page 16 for details on this one. Stay tuned, keep loose and be flexible. Roll with it and enjoy the scenery.

Catch My Draft ost of you who have been around a while are probably quite familiar with our discussions and fundraisers for our charity in Mineral Wells called the Hope Shelter, but for those of you who may have joined us recently, it is a good time to share a little more information.

The Hope Shelter is a refuge for victims of domestic violence that serves women and children in the North Texas area. We have been helping support it as a charity for more than 10 years. It is located in Mineral Wells and deals with many families per year. It gives the women and their kids a safe place to live while they regroup, work on legal issues, start to build up a new support system and resources, and then helps them get started in a new, better, situation. Largely because of Lanean Hughes, and her kind heart, we have taken countless loads of our old (but still usable) items out to Mineral Wells for the clients to use there or for them to take when they leave to set up their own safe homes. The gifts the club has given them over the years has added to be quite a substantial number! We thank everyone for their generosity.

The shelter had been in a house that was decades old and getting to be in pretty poor repair. A few years ago Mark Gluck (now Vice President) decided they needed a new place to stay and had a vision of what that could be. Countless woman (and man) hours later, a new shelter was created, largely based on help, assistance, and guidance from the Maverick Region.

eral Wells. An SUV or Minivan has been working great for the past number of years. Occasionally we make a big round-up of larger items, and we rent or borrow trucks for that. That is not what we are asking for here. It is mainly someone to accept the donations and watch them until they can be taken to the shelter.

by James Shoffit, Region President

The shelter has been so appreciative of our monetary donations, as well as the goods we provide. Without Maverick Region’s support over the past years, they would still be stuck in an old empty run down building with small bedrooms and one bathroom. They need us and we need them. What better way to help the community than give to such a worthy cause? Please help us to continue giving to them.

Lisa Huffaker’s, the director of the shelter, name graces the new building, along with Lanean’s. The HuffakerHughes Hope House has been in operation since December, 2006. Our Region’s contributions to the shelter were recognized by PCA National this year at Parade. We received a check for $1500 from PCA to be given to Hope as part of the National Service Award we won. On September 16th, at our Sunday Autocross, Lisa came out and we presented her with a check for the $1500 plus another $500+ in donations from members (from charity laps, autocross water donations, etc.). Lisa and husband, Mitchell, were very grateful.

After Lanean’s passing last year, Clara Lewis had stepped up and became the focal point for our efforts in getting stuff to the Shelter. But due to family circumstances, she will not be able to continue in the role in 2008. So we are looking for some kind-hearted soul to help us out in that regard. All it takes is some space to store stuff that people bring as donations (usually just clothes and toiletries and occasionally toys and other odds and ends – nothing terribly large), and a vehicle capable of getting those items to Min-

averick Region Board Meeting on September 6, 2007 The meeting was called to order at 6:55 PM.

In attendance: James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Tracey Gross, Joel Nannis, Bryan Bell, Robyn Howard, Travis Howard, Clint Blackman, Denny Payne, Charlie Davis, and Teri Davis.

Wendy started a discussion of how, which version and how many copies of InDesign to buy. After much discussion, she made a motion to authorize $600 to be spent for two copies of InDesign. Joel seconded it and it passed unanimously. Wendy then put on her Jan hat and asked the board if the charity autocross ad should be changed. We decided not to change it. The ad for the pending concours is done. She needs a new ad for the October DE, the November Sunday Drive, and the Founders Day Banquet. She also needs a report from the Nominating Committee listing the nominees for officers. [ed. Nominations have been made and the ballot can be found on page 10.] Tracey reported that the Murder Mystery Dinner turned out fine. We then discussed the dress code for the Founders Day Banquet and decided it should be upscale western attire. She was encouraged to publish that dress code. We discussed potentially having music at the event… probably bring some CDs. She is still working to find a place in Dallas for the Holiday Party.

Joel reported that his database shows 1361 members and that the National database shows 1093 active members plus 817 affiliate members. He already has 137 entrants (27 of which are instructors) for the September DE and 5-6 entrants for the October DE.

Bryan announced that Richard Diller will be at the next TimeTrial (Richard has been absent at the last few). Bryan further announced that Richard had been modifying his car, increasing the horsepower from 163 to 165! Bryan will schedule the 2008 AX / TT events when the DE / CR events are scheduled. Mark’s report was short: He has submitted insurance requests for all pending events. Robin had nothing to say.

Travis said he had done no safety inspections recently.

Clint announced two Sunday drives: One to Palestine to ride the Texas State Railway and one to Tyler State Park. The train ride will be $20.00 per person.

8

Denny said that 911 Enterprises (Barry Gibbs) wants a link to his web site on our web site. We suggested that he proactively add Advertisers to his Sponsors page. He will do this.

Charlie mentioned that he had not been driving the Truxster much lately. He again noted that the link in Slipstream for on-line registration for our DE events is wrong. The link to www.clubregistration.com should be www.clubregistration.net. Denny then noticed that the other link to our information page about DE events was wrong too. The link that said mav.pca.org/mav/events/DE.asp should be mav.pca.org/events/DE.asp. Teri said she needs yearly trophies for the rally series. The BMW Club is holding their annual convention in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and wanted access to Ed Tix’s Parade Rally. After Board approval, she will send it to them. Clint wondered if we have an interest in a Christmas Drive to see lights? He got a generally positive response. James adjourned the meeting at 7:45 PM.

Rally at the Nasher

ain was in the forecast, but it didn’t ruin our time at the Nasher Sculpture Garden. It may have been the beautiful “Walking to the Sky” exhibit that held an invisible umbrella, but we were spared the rain and 15 club members enjoyed an afternoon searching the beautiful objets d’art for rally clues. This was not your normal rally. There were no hard to follow instructions, no tire warm ups, no odometer check, in fact, there weren’t any cars involved at all. This was a walking rally.

When each of us arrived, we were greeted by Teri Davis, the event organizer, and her husband, James joins the sculpture walkers Charlie, the phowalking to the sky tographer. She simply gave us a piece of paper with 20 pictures and 20 clues and told to match them up. Everyone soon discovered that we had to find the subject of the photograph, and then match it to the correct clue. Not as easy as it sounds! Many of the photographs were taken from unusual angles, including from the back, so just finding the subject was sometimes difficult, but forced us to look closely at each piece.

for first place at 36 minutes between our president, James Shoffit, his daughter Jasmine, and Kevan Davis. Wendy Shoffit came in at fourth place and let’s say everyone else tied for fifth.

I think it’s safe to say we all enjoyed both the inside artwork and sculptures, as well as the larger, sometimes thought provoking outdoor presentations. Mr. and Mrs. Nasher have given the City of Dallas a world-class gift and I would encourage everyone to visit the Garden and take a few hours to enjoy the beauty. Thanks to Teri and Charlie for their efforts to organize this event and for choosing such a wonderful location. Let’s hope the weather holds for the next DE event – I made it to Blue Solo!

As with all competitions, there were some winners, but there were no losers on this day. Everyone got all the right answers, some were just a little faster than others. Linda Bamina and Dee Lersch

Then, determining the proper clue forced us to read the informational plaque. Imagine – it’s like they wanted us to learn something! Well, no harm done and everyone enjoyed themselves and the friendly competition.

It Was Murrrrrrder

“M

urder is always a mistake - one should never do anything one cannot talk about after dinner” – Oscar Wilde

Nineteen Mavericks gathered at the Old Mill Inn in Fair Park for an hors d’oeuvre reception, a three course dinner and a rousing Keith & Margo Murder Mystery Dinner.

Prime Suspects Joel and Erika Nannis were ready for questioning by the authorities.

Or, for Mavericks on August 4th, before, during and after dinner.

All of us guessed at least one of the players - she was nearly 6 feet tall and wearing sunglasses the size of 914 headlights. And I nailed the killer within 5 minutes of meeting him in the bar – literally - we both reached for the same piece of cheese. Ahhh, but the motive, the motive escaped me - and the victim too (well, she was very short).

A little excitement, much laughter, another marvelous Maverick “outing”.

Arrests were made, shots fired and accusations flung. They rounded up the usual suspects and our Matt Platts, Erika and Joel Nannis were questioned by the police. New members Shanna and Chris Roundtree were shocked, shocked, I say, at the shenanigans Joel Nannis was purportedly up to! Table #1 members toasting their anticipated success. Little did they know! . . . While Table #2 showed their disappointment over having just coconut creme pie (rather than chocolate)

From the Tech Q & A - 911 (1974-1983)

Q

by Harry Hall, Mid-911 Tech Advisor

uestion: Haven’t seen question like this before. Parked my car in reverse. Shifted into neutral and started car, clutch in. Released clutch in neutral and car moved in reverse! Found that shifter would seemingly engage all forward gears, but would not move forward while a gear was selected (seemed like both a forward and reverse gear were engaged and car would strain when clutch was released).

Could select all forward gears but shifter would not go into 5th / R gate. Checked shift coupler. Found in as new condition. Played with it some, reassembled. Shifted around all gears (could now move shifter into 5th/R gate). Now transaxle is in a forward gear and will move forward when clutch is released and shifter is again in neutral position. When any gear is selected, car again strains. Is this something that can be possibility corrected from the access plate to shift fork on bottom of transmission? If you would like to read more tech questions and answers like this one, go to www.pca.org and click on “Tech Q&A.” Select the car model you are looking for and then the Classification of question. From there, click on the subject you want and read to your heart’s desire. Feel free to submit your own question to have answered. These experts are amazing!

16

A

nswer: As you have surmisede, the transmission is in reverse independent of the shifter. If you put it into a forward gear and let out the clutch with enough gas on, you will break something in the trans because it can’t move in two different gears at once. Reverse is the easiest gear for this to happen in since it has no synchro mechanism to resist popping into gear.

What happened is that you generated enough momentum to put it in reverse without having the shifter firmly in the slot in the 5th/reverse shift fork shaft. The shifter moved back to neutral but left the trans in reverse. You can correct this, but not through the access plate. Put the shifter in neutral in the 1st/2nd position to get it out of the way. Then raise the front of the car higher than the rear if you don’t want to drain a lot of the gear oil out. Remove the backup light switch (It’s not easy, but I’ve done it a number of times.) and find something you can use in place of the switch pin or to push on the switch pin so as to push the shift rod back into the neutral position.

If it happens again, you will need to remove the access plate on the bottom of the trans, loosen the two nuts that hold the pivot fork for the shifter, and reposition it slightly in the direction that makes it more difficult to generate force in the 2nd/4th/reverse direction from the neutral gates.

ISTOOK’S MOTORSPORTS 2729 TILLAR ST. FORT WORTH, TEXAS 76107 (817) 332-6547 (817) 332-6548 FAX We are now building and taking orders for Porsche 924/944’s for SCCA, PCA and NASA racing for the 2007 season. With the addition of the PCA 944-SPEC (SP1-SP3) series, there is now a greater than ever venue to economically race these cars. In SCCA, you can have a GT2, GT3, EP, or ITA racer. With PCA, you can pick from a number of classes, dependent upon your car. Cars are built from mild to wild, depending upon what class you plan to enter and to what levelyou want to participate. Our experience building and racing Porsches goes back to our 911’s in the mid and late 70’s, and 944’s in the 80’s in SCCA, IMSA GTU and Firehawk, PCA in the late and early 80’s/90’s, and Speedvision GT, Rolex GT and GT in 2000 up. In addition to the Porsches, we have had ahand in building five AUDI S4’s for the Grand AM Cup, and a couple of AUDI TT’s for SCCA. We can build on our inventory of chassis’s, or take yours and develop it into the race car you want. Get ready for the 2007 season NOW!! We plan to attend and support as many race events for2007 as our racing schedule will allow. Don Istook and B.J. Jones

azzoo’s lived up to its reputation – it always draws a large group of Mavericks and there are always lots of new faces. Maybe it’s the location, or the Cajun food. Maybe it’s the beads or the special prices on the frozen Hurricanes in the large glasses. Maybe it’s the festive atmosphere.

Rennsport Reunion - Co-Grand Marshals

P

eter Schwarzenbauer and Betty Jo Turner named co-grand marshals for Porsche® Rennsport Reunion III. It expected to be the largest gathering of legendary Porsche race cars in history. Porsche Cars North America President and Chief Executive Officer, Peter Schwarzenbauer, and Porsche Panorama Editor, Betty Jo Turner, were announced as Co-Grand Marshals for the November 2-4, 2007, Porsche Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

Sponsored by Porsche Cars North America and organized by Brian Redman’s Intercontinental Events, Inc., Porsche Rennsport Reunion is held every three years. It is open to the public and brings together an unprecedented gathering of significant Porsche vintage and current racecars and famous Porsche race drivers.

“I really enjoyed serving as Co-Grand Marshal at the previous Porsche Rennsport Reunion,” Mr. Schwarzenbauer related. “At that event I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the participants and fans. It was easy for me to see that the Porsche racing community is truly one big family and this event is their exclusive gathering. I look forward to another great reunion with them.” An avid Porsche racing fan, Betty Jo Turner has edited Porsche Panorama for 38 years. The monthly magazine has a circulation of 57,000 enthusiastic Porsche Club of America members.

“Porsche motorsport has been followed intensely by Porsche Club of America members since the club’s formation in 1955,” Mrs. Turner commented. “Back then, the first Panorama celebrated Pete Thacher’s Speedster win at Marlboro and included Dick Thompson’s advice on how to race a 356A Super. Today we cheer factory driver and PCA member Patrick Long winning at Le Mans with a 911 RSR and the huge success of the RS Spyders. In between, we’ve been there in spirit for every great Porsche win and offer our own form of motorsport in PCA’s Club Racing series, where, as always, every Porsche is a race car.” Weekend Schedule Features Races for Historic and Contemporary Porsche Race Cars on Sunday Afternoon and the World’s Only Concours Exclusively for Race Cars on Saturday Afternoon

Like the previous events, Porsche Rennsport Reunion III features a three-day program including on-track competition plus a concours d’elegance, now called the Concours d’ Sport, which is open to the event’s participants by invitation. Events are also planned commemorating the awesome Porsche 917 racecars and the 25th Anniversary of the racing debut of the all-conquering Porsche 956/962 prototypes.

Under the direction of Intercontinental Events, five races will be contested on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4. They include events for production race cars, prototype race cars, 911 Cup cars, and, entries permitting, a special 25th Anniversary race for 956/962s. Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Founder and Co-Chairman, Bill Warner, and his staff are organizing the Concours d’Sport for Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3. Staged on Daytona International Speedway’s pit lane, it is the world’s only concours devoted exclusively to race cars. The event’s judged classes include 917 Coupes, 917 Spyders, 956s, 962s, 550 Spyders through RS61s, 904s through 910s, and production-based race cars.

Entries Feature Legendary Porsche 917 and 956/962 Racecars and the Drivers Who Made Them Famous

26

Highlighting the anticipated record number of 917 entries are four cars from the Porsche Museum in Germany. They include the 917 Long-tail, the 917/20 “Pink Pig”, the 1971 Le Mans winning 917/K, and the 16-cylinder 917 Can Am Spyder that is making its first trip to North America. Other expected 917s include the 1970 Le Mans winning 917/K, the 1972 Can Am winning 917/10, and the 1973 Can Am winning 917/30. Joining these and other 917s are the drivers that drove them to victories in the world’s most prestigious sports car races. They include Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, George Follmer, Hurley Haywood, Willy Kauhsen, Charlie Kemp, Gerald Larrousse, Rudi Lins, Udo Schutz, Randolph Townsend, David Piper, Brian Redman, Sam Posey, David Hobbs, Jackie Oliver, and Gijs van Lennep. The large field scheduled to celebrate the “25th Anniversary of the Porsche 956/962” features an equally famous group of winning cars as well as their drivers including John Andretti, Derek Bell, Jurgen Barth, Bruce Leven, Jochen Mass, John Morton, Vern Schuppan, and Chip Robinson.

Other drivers expected to attend include past Porsche factory drivers Joe Buzzetta, Scooter Patrick, Kees Nierop and David Murry, as well as current Porsche factory drivers Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long. Additional Events Include Street Car Lapping Session, Literature, Toy, and Memorabilia Swap Meet, and Porsche Model Car Contest

A special pace lapping session kicks off the weekend on Friday afternoon, Nov. 2. Organized by the Porsche Club of America, the event provides anyone who drives their Porsche to the event the opportunity to tour the entire Daytona International Speedway layout, from the high banking to the infield road course. The following morning, attendees will have the chance to meet many of the legendary Porsche race drivers during a special autograph session. Proceeds from both of these events will be donated to Camp Boggy Creek, a facility for Florida’s seriously ill children. Also on Saturday morning are two activities new to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion - a Porsche only literature, toy, and memorabilia swap meet and a Porsche model car contest. Parallel to the famous one held every year at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton and run by the same team, the swap meet will feature sales and technical literature for all Porsche models, factory posters, books, toys and models of all sizes and descriptions, with proceeds going to Camp Boggy Creek. The vendor reservation form is available at www.rennsportreunion.com, or call or email the organizer, Prescott Kelly (203-227-7770) or KellyCT@optonline.net. The unique Porsche model car contest features 10 judged categories for Porsche race cars. They include 917, 956/962, Pre1964, 1965-1975, 1976-1981, 1982-present, Small Scale (1/28 and smaller), Large Scale (1/20 and larger), Diorama Racing Related Subjects, and Porsche Racing Support Subjects. Those interested in entering are encouraged to contact Henry Trent at (423-745-8765) or htrent77@yahoo.com.

Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion will be published on Brian Redman’s Intercontinental Events web site (www.rennsport2007.com), and Daytona International Speedway’s web site (http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/), as they become available. Ticket information is available by contacting Daytona International Speedway at 1-800-PITSHOP.

Welcome, New Members!

You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events, while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences. You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses, and Drivers’Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer.

Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family),and regular opportunities to supportour perpetual charity, the Hope Shelter. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us...we might just add something extra to the calendar. Please also feel free to share article ideas (and submissions)to editor@mavpca.org.

We’d love to hear from you!
