My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor

P

lease take a look at the letter below from Lisa Huffaker at Hope, Inc. If you already have, read it again. Do you realize what has been accomplished here? Volunteers had a vision. Volunteers raised money. Volunteers donated supplies and went out asking businesses and other families for donations, money and supplies. Volunteers ran errands, picked up supplies, picked up donations, gave time and more stuff and more money. More volunteers drove charity laps and gave money. Volunteers painted, did electrical work and yard work, others decorated, cleaned and scrubbed. Kids picked up trash and provided drinks of water. See what Maverick Region has done? An amazing group of working, professional, retired and still in school people Volunteered to build this house for North Texas Victims of Domestic Violence.

many changes over the years. When we visit now we go to a beautiful new home with five bedrooms and four baths, private counseling rooms, a large “family” room and a wonderful play room (with glass doors!) for the kids. Most of the women smile now and the children don’t hide. We are part of the family. We built the house. And Texas recognizes the best facility in the state! It’s been a few years now since we had the dedication ceremony yet we still continue to provide money, clothes, housing items and other donations. If you want to know how, who, what, or where you can contact anyone on the Maverick Board page. We’d love to have you come join in on the most fantastic joint effort of Volunteerism that we’ve

Some of you remember the first several years that we supported the Hope Shelter, a great number of you do not. Their tiny house would sometimes have up to 20 women and children sharing two bedrooms and one bath. They were all so afraid of us coming to their front door, even when it was obvious that we were there to help. They finally started to recognize us and welcome us, then they started to help us. Some of the women still showed signs of their abuse. Some of the children still ran and hid. We have known many directors and many attitudes and, thankfully,

Catch My Draft by James Shoffit, President

Ah...

this is the best time of year. The heat wave seems to have passed; we narrowly escaped a hurricane, at least one of our Porsches is in fine working order and performing magnificently at driving events, and I only have THREE more President’s articles to write.

some Happy Hours, Founders’ Day, and then the Christmas Party. And then... THEN I get to move on to the VERY BEST job in the region – PAST President! Check the calendar in Slipstream and on the web site for upcoming events – we have exciting events for everyone. So come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Being President isn’t nearly as hard as most people think. Maverick Region is blessed with having one of the largest group of very active volunteers of any club in the country. So my main job is staying out of the way of progress, and coordinating when bumps occur. Now writing the articles – THAT is the hard work! But along with the dwindling heat, there is an opposite effect on our driving events. We have had our last two autocrosses, and by the time this prints, we will have had our last two time trials. We still have a few DE events left, and these would be great opportunities to enjoy our magnificent cars and tracks and this wonderful weather!

[ed. George and John Q. among the first of a long line of dead presidents....]

We also have a few more Sunday Drives left, as well as

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis, Secretary

inutes of the September 3, 2008 Board Meeting

In attendance: Jan Mayo, James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Travis Howard, Robyn Howard, Linda Bambina, Tracey Gross, Richard Bradley, Bryan Bell, Joel Nannis, Charlie Davis, Bob Lewis, Bob Kuykendall, Clint Blackman, and Jim

James called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM. Having no other duties at the moment, James passed. Wendy reminded us that Clara Lewis has been helping with the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Clara has suggested that we again donate Wal-Mart gift cards during the holidays.

Wendy then read a letter from Lisa Huffaker. We suggested that Jan publish it in Slipstream. Wendy requested we list information on our website about needing a volunteer with business skills. Finally, she read a thank you note from Jean Frick who is recovering nicely from back surgery. Clint reminded us that we have a special Sunday Drive on September 21st which will involve a trip to MSR during the DE there. Then on October 19th, he has scheduled another Sunday Drive…this one to Commerce for a tour of Roy Smalley’s restoration shop. Tracey reported that plans for the Founder’s Day Banquet are rolling along. She still plans to have a Casino Night in conjunction with the banquet. The board was asked to approve a $20.00 per person subsidy for the meal. Bob K said we have adequate funds to do this. It was approved unanimously. There will also be a silent auction at this event to benefit the Hope House. The Holiday Party location has not yet been finalized…she’s still searching for a location. She plans to have Macaroni Grill cater this event. Tracey gave us a hint that she would be around next year by discussing the New Member Party in January. Bob L then discussed Happy Hours. The next one will be at Reata’s in Fort Worth. Bob will select a fixed menu. The October Happy Hour will be at Uncle Julio’s on Dallas North Parkway. In November he has selected Bugatti’s Ristorante on NW Highway. Finally in December, it will be the Big Bucks Brewery near Grapevine Mills Mall. Richard, like James, (a man of few words) said he was in a support role tonight. Linda, explaining her presence, said that she had been volunteered at Parade Charlotte to resurrect Roundup. She said this will not be a serious event …everything will be a gimmick event. It will start on Friday night and end at Sunday noon. She’s planning on a $300 subsidy from PCA National which will help keep the entry fees low. Even so, she wondered if a $50 fee was too much. The consensus was t hat it was not too much. Robyn didn’t have much to say, so I didn’t write much down and Bryan said he just came to get a free meal and cookies. Travis was wearing three hats, so he had a lot to say. He reported, in Clay’s absence, that there is an Autocross on Sunday September 14th…it will be at the Birdville stadium parking lot. The last two Time Trials will be on the 27th and 28th of September. The nominating committee has candidates for all officer positions: Voting and announcement of the officers will be at Founders Day, or you can fill out and mail the ballot found on page 2. Joel (two hats) reported we have 1116 members and 822 affiliate members, for a total of 1938. He reported there were already 121 people signed up for the next DE, which

8

will be on the 3.1 mile MSR course. In October, the DE at MSR will use the 1.7 mile course. The last DE of the year will be on November 8th and 9th and be at Eagles Canyon. The 7th may be an instructor’s day? Charlie (two hats) gave the Treasurer $80 from Teri, which were the proceeds from her last Rally. And he announced that he had paid the Truxster Insurance and asked the Treasurer for reimbursement. Bob K held up the $80 dollars and said, ”We have money!” He mentioned the Rangers owe us the $1000 deposit back from Autocross #5, and will email Clay a reminder. Bob also asked where the revenue proceeds were from Autocross #5. Bryan B to get with him. Finally, Bob noted he had received a bill from Eagles Canyon for damages to the track, which Joel thought we should not pay, but Bob will check with Colin Graidage regarding the details. Looping back to James, he remembered that he had a proposal from Jeff Pohlman (who owns the UPS Store in Lewisville)… Jeff wants us to assist with a car show in conjunction with a charity event sponsored by the shopping center where his store is located. Wendy said we will be printing the club directory in January. It will not be sent out with Slipstream as we have done in the past. Only people who request the directory will get one and it will not be free. We will also allow any member who does not want their name listed in the directory to opt out. James adjourned at 8:29 PM.

A Trip to Motorsport Ranch By Scott Walthuis

otorsport... For the majority of us it makes our blood flow a little faster by providing the thrill we soooo crave...

We had a great day for the first Maverick Region time trial at Motorsport ranch! For me it was a first to drive a purpose built track. It’s quite a challenge, a lot to sort out and all at once, The Fight to maintain control over Bryan Bell, Chief TT Driving Instructor, the ever changing con- points out Corner Worker stations and track layout during the early morning ditions... not to mention driver’s meeting. the machine, strategy, and the execution of it all in less than a couple minutes. We seemed to get a refresher course on how all the delays add up to less laps, I contributed to this also! I’m sure we’ll do better next time. I’m looking forward to getting whipped into shape by the Mavericks finest. I’d like to send out a special thanks to the core group for their hard work Danny Nowack sports stars in cockpit to plan and manage these -- and matches his helmet. events. I for one am looking forward to getting back to “The Ranch”...

Jan Mayo, our official “Grid Queen”, takes a bow after a long day’s work.

What a Day to Remember by Tannia Dobbins

A

bout a year ago, or maybe during the Maverick Christmas party, I got wind that we just might have a Time Trial event at MSR in 2008. When Travis Howard asked me “What do you think?” I was speechless (and for those of you that know me ... well, that is quite a sight to see).

James Shoffit proudly gives us some great advice for the day.

Time Trial #4 Results

Photos by Charlie Davis

Once I found my voice you couldn’t shut me up. I was elated, yet there were so many questions ... How do you work the corners? Where would timing be? What about the people that have never run at MSR? Wouldn’t it be a little scary for some coming around Big Bend and into Rattlesnake? The list went on and on.

However, once the shock wore off, I went into giddy mode. This was going to be awesome! I had an advantage to be sure. After all, I’ve run MSR in several DE’s ... both on the long course and the short course. Granted I’m still a fairly new driver but this would be familiar territory to me. One thing would be for certain, I would finally know just how fast (or slow) my lap times were. Chuck McCoy shows us how to successfully maneuver through Rattlesnake.

During the long spring and summer LOTS of preparation went into setting this event up. It was not easy but those with the vision saw it through. Finally track day arrived and what an event it was! Sure we had some challenges like the wind blowing over the timing equipment and the oil slick on the driving line … but it was all worth it and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Oh yeah, as for my times, well, let’s just say Jeff Herrmann shows us a very unique I need to make sure I’m at way to run Rattlesnake...maybe more all the DE’s next year :-) exciting, but probably a little slower than Chuck!

Racing in the Netherlands

I

by Ed Gross at Zandvoort was in Amsterdam towards the end of March on business. Due to the holiday weekend, I had to split my meetings across a weekend (what a bummer). I’ve been to The Netherlands many times, and have spent a good deal of time in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Einhoven, and have always enjoyed the Dutch and the country. My free weekend allowed me to do some sightseeing in parts of Holland that I’ve never visited before.

The main attraction for me was a sports car racing event at Zandvoort, about 20 minutes west of Amsterdam on the coast. There were 5 classes of racing, from BMW 130i Series race cars, to Formula Fords, and a few other spec racing classes. I saw a number of The view of the front straight and pits from very good on top of the pits. The front straight is the only flat spot for miles around. and closely contested races in all classes. The feature races were the BMW Series 130i Cup. Not only did the races feature a number of good series drivers, but Jan Lammers, the Dutch former F1 driver, also did a respectable job in both races. Something happened in the first race, and he was assessed a “drive through penalty” which translated into English, means a drive through penalty. All track announcements were made in Dutch, so as best as I could tell, Lammers was speeding in the pits. He still finished 4th overall. In the 2nd Bimmer race, he finished 3rd despite having a decidedly inferior car to the 1st and 2nd place cars – he was trying everything to keep up and get around them, but in the end, had to settle for 3rd. Other than the front straight, there are no other level areas on the track. Every turn is either going up, down, and/ or changing camber. This track would be a real hoot to drive. While hosting more races in the past, this track, like many others, is one that big powerful modern cars can’t run because of their speed and power. It’s way too tight and has almost no run off in some areas. One series of turns, called Geralbocht, goes left slightly before going up right over a small hill, and then ending in a tight uphill left hairpin. Add some brief snow squalls, and cars were entering the following turn pointed in all different directions. In fact, after his 3rd place finish in the second BMW race, Lammers kissed the 18

Armco on the cool down lap. More than one car backed into the Armco during the day at the exit to Geralbocht

Yep, it’s the same day and same track 30 minutes of sun, 30 minutes of snow, all day long This is the hairpin exit to Geralbrocht

There were several spec races, featuring small Renaults Clios in one race and tiny Suzuki’s in another. The Suzuki’s had such small engines that you couldn’t hear the engines when they were running at full throttle down the front straight – all you could hear was the tire noise. In addition to Jan Lammers, a number of members of the Bleekemolen family raced in a number of the events, I heard at least 3 of them racing. Zaandvoort is a small coastal town, with topography more like the southern part of the Netherlands, with rolling hills, as opposed to the relatively flat and low lying areas around Amsterdam. It’s always easy to get around The Netherlands given the efficient train system. I spent the previous day down at The Hague. I didn’t get to experience much of this historic city, since it was Easter and most everything was closed.

Nor did I get an explanation why there were four men dressed in rabbit suites playing Dixieland Jass on the pier by the beach but I have to admit the Dixieland was pretty good.

My only complaint about the entire trip was the French Fries. With lunch and dinner, they served the most tasteless and bland French fries. At the racetrack, they were serving French fries at 9:00 in the morning with mayonnaise on top. What a waste of mayonnaise. I’m really not sure these fries weren’t made out of cardboard. The only difference I saw in track procedures was a furled checkered was displayed to indicate the last lap. Zandvoort is right on the coast of the North Sea, and every hour a strong 30 mph wind would kick up and it would snow hard for 20 to 30 minutes. Then the sun would come out and dry everything out. Given what the weather was doing to the track conditions, there were surprisingly few incidents due to the weather or changing track conditions. The biggest impact I saw was when someone lost it coming out of Geralbocht, then pulled out on the track and was moving slowly. An approaching car apparently didn’t see the slow moving car, even though it was right in front of him, or he just wanted to bend some metal, because he did. It was a fun day at the track, it’s was definitely worth the 20 minute train ride from Amsterdam to the track, even though snow and I don’t mix very well. Can’t wait for my next trip to The Netherlands.

Happy Hour at Texas Land & Cattle

T

by Bob Lewis

his August the Happy Hour people met at Texas Land & Cattle Steakhouse in Frisco. There were 18 that signed the who’s here roster. But there were at least 25 present. It was a beautiful night in North Texas.

Clara and I tried to get there early but alas we were just a few minutes early. It seems there is always more traffic on the roads between Irving and the Frisco area then you think is possible. We felt this restaurant would have plenty of parking. This Texas Land & Cattle is beside Stonebrier Mall. So there are a lot of shops and restaurants sharing the parking. Inside the restaurant there weren’t enough customers to account for the cars outside. Inside we were given our own room with a fire place no less. But being in August we just admired from a distance this additional source of heat. We did our usual thing, which is having a beverage and get better acquainted. Then we sat down to dinner. Once seated we occupied about one half of the table space. The food was good and so was the service. Mommy and Daddy Thaler brought baby Addison. Notice from her picture here she is asleep. She slept the whole time. In talking with both Marc and Bonnie the baby has adjusted to her food and sleeps a lot. This is not typical to most Sleepy Miss Addison of the babies we know. They, including Addison, are very lucky. There were six new couples or singles to attend this Happy Hour. And some stated they finally made it because the site was convenient to their home. For this vary reason, we do move the locations where we meet around the metroplex. If you live or work in Fort Worth for example it is a long trek to Frisco and vise versa in the just after work time. Lynn and Thomas Jones

At the Happy Hours

the attendees have a chance to learn about the many activities the Maverick Region has. For instance a number of people are surprised at how many of the Mavericks that drive their new Porsches in the track events (DE’s, Autocross’ and Time trials). We do have other events when your Porsche is a primary participant (Tours, Rallies, and Concours). Then we have a number of social events and special events (swap meets, and dealer Tech programs). Our next Happy Hour is in Fort Worth at an upscale restaurant, Reata. Then on October 16th the Happy Hour goes to Uncle Julio’s in the Addison area. Hope to see you there.
