ike is out having fun in the world this month so I said I would fill in with a few words to everyone about the region. October is always a great month with PCA & Maverick Region. It is cooler outside after the long hot summer which seems to last from May to the end of September. The leaves are turning great colors and things are everywhere to do with our cars. Just in the month of October we have: 2 Time Trials, 2 Autocrosses, a Driver’s Education at MSR, a Sunday Drive to see the leaves turning, a swap meet, 2 lunches, a Board meeting and a happy hour. Not to mention the Club Race up at Hallett. To do them all, I may need to quit my job! What better way than a Porsche and good Porsche friends, to spend your October 2010. I can’t wait to see you at an event soon and hear your stories.

Mav of the Month Our Mav of the Month is Travis Howard. Travis has been the Time Trial chair for two years now and that’s no small job with eight TT’s - two of which are at MSR. Plus, he has just taken on the job of Grid Control at our DE’s. This is not an easy job to step into after Jan Mayo had this job for about 10 years. Travis has a passion for Porsches, but a bigger passion for helping others.

2

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Travis dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Travis, thanks for all you do. Bryan

Maverick Minutes by Lisa Steele

W

ARNING: You may be shocked at how quickly you read these minutes! The reason for this warning is that our wonderful Vice President, Bryan Bell, ran the meeting for this month. You see, people are really scared of him and they get right to the point with what needs to be said. The meeting began promptly at 7:00 with Mr. Bell’s leadership. Bryan assured the group that all upcoming events are covered with insurance. We quickly moved on to the next person in our round table discussion…Wendy Shoffit. Wendy asked if we were still good on brochures and John Hamilton said there was still plenty. Wendy will not have any reprinted for now. James Shoffit announced that the Nominating Committee is doing their job. They have one person interested in taking over the President position. Three people would like to be Vice President. There is “maybe” one person interested in being Secretary and definitely one person interested in staying on as Treasurer.

Richard Bradley brought with him the September issue of Slipstream with a great picture of our President, Mike Brodigan, standing outside of the Silver Fox. Richard said that he would be dropping off some of these issues to the Silver Fox. Richard also reported that he and Ed Mullenix are working on some good Tech articles. Richard was also happy to report that he had one person answer his Help Wanted Ad. Hiram Saunders stepped up and said he would help. Any additional help from anyone would be GREAT! Tom and Barbara Minnella and Linda Bambina spoke to the group about next year’s Round Up. They are planning a wonderful event at Possum Kingdom Lake. They have all kinds of wonderful ideas and they are thinking about possibly combining their event with another driving event like an Autocross or Time Trial at Mineral Wells. Sounds fun!!! Clint Blackman reports that we have Sunday Drives! The next drive will be a great route from Duncanville to Cresson where the group will enjoy some time at MSR and get to take their cars on the track for charity laps. John Hamilton announced that the dates for DE’s have been set for next year. The schedule remains the same with the exception of a few fall dates. There was a corner worker conflict, but by changing the dates we should have our superior crew of corner workers with us. John also announced that we have a new Equipment Manager. Luke Edson will be handling this job. Our new Grid “Queen” is Travis Howard and Cathy Howard will be our new Gate Control person. John also asked Wendy if it is too much trouble to continue making name tags for the drivers. Of course, Wendy said it is no problem at all and she will have them ready for the September DE. Jim Falgout reported, “We Have Money!” He also announced that he has taken over the billing for Slipstream Ads. Payments were due in September and many advertisers have paid…woohoo!! Carey Spreen reported that he has been to a couple more SCCA Rallies to get some good ideas for next year. Travis Howard reported that there is an upcoming AX/TT in Mineral Wells. Robyn Howard reported that she will be working out on a corner at the September DE…hope you hear my honk, Robyn! We concluded our round table discussion with Bryan’s last statement: The Colorado Club Race was Awesome!! Meeting adjourned at 7:30PM. Was I right??? Shortest Minutes Ever!!

High Plains Raceway Club Race By Bryan Bell

or me, one of the best feelings in racing is the moment you climb into your SUV and head to the track. The trailer is loaded down with your completely prepared car and you click your seatbelt knowing you are headed out on a racing trip! You have all these minutes ahead of you to enjoy: the trip itself to the track, unpacking all of the track stuff, seeing and talking with friends, learning a new track, feeling the rush of the race start and the joy on your face when you crawl out of your car at the

10

Photos by Jeremy Rosenberger end of a hard day. Man, if the pros that get paid to do this still have this feeling - that sure must be close to nirvana! My family and I headed out on my quest for nirvana on Wednesday afternoon. We met up with David Hodges (fellow new Club Racer in my GTB1 class) in Denton. We hoped that traveling together would ease each other’s pain if traveling trouble came up for either of us. We made it to Wichita, KS, and stayed the night. On Thursday we finished the boring and uneventful drive across the plains and pulled into High Plains Raceway just as a 50+ mph storm rolled in! As I rushed to unload

my car, we had sideways rain (or at least as close as I have ever seen)! I was hoping very much that this was not a sign of what was to come. The storm passed, the sun returned, and I really wanted to walk around the track. Unfortunately, no one there seemed to want to let us do it, so we headed out. We were tired and still had a 50-minute drive to the hotel. I also thought that a nice dinner with my sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew would be better, anyway. Friday morning came and I was ready to go. Bring on the smell of hot brakes and burning rubber! Friday was an open lapping day for the track. I needed it very much since I had never been on this track before. As open track days go, let’s just say they were very relaxed there. There were lots of PCA racers plus about 40% of the field was every kind of street car you could think of - from $5k to $200k. The skill level was about the same, as well. I rushed out with the first group on track and quickly found Rocky Johnson close to me. I locked onto his tail knowing I could learn a pretty good line from him since he raced there last year (and set the track record in Spec Boxster). Wow, what a track! It was smooth as glass, fast, and would make you pay with slow exit speeds if you made a bad turn in on any number of blind apexes. Even with the slow unpredictable traffic and old tires on my car, the track was not intimidating as a new track normally is to me. I found myself with quick and unjustified (as you will see next) confidence that I could master this track in no time. A quick stop in the pits to check tires, (thanks to my nephew, Hunter “Pit Master for the weekend”), I was back out in the madness of a crowded track. Then on the third lap on the second run set, I found myself with open track down the long back straight. I have renamed this straight, “Enough rope to hang yourself with.” Let me explain. You come out of a challenging fast right corner at the top of third gear, shift quickly into fourth as you settle into the straight on the left side. Then you run out the intoxicating sound of fourth gear and enjoy the slow motion shift to that

wonderful pop of revs as fifth gear kicks you in the butt! Just as you start rolling past 135mph, you see that the track ahead of you falls off. So the fearful question, with nothing much around you but the grass of the plains is, “how much do I brake and when?” Next is an easy fourth gear right, but do I track out completely before the harder downhill left that Bryan working his way up on David ! is next or not? I think, “of course, track out at maximum speed!” and I quickly come off the brakes and jam the gas back to the floor. Well, I didn’t remember the downhill third gear left that was coming next… However, it remembered me as I ran straight off the end of corner 5 at 90+mph! I can laugh now about it, knowing I had no damage other than tumbleweeds in my brake ducts. By the end of the day, I had the track down and felt good enough about this track to call it the best track I have ever had the pleasure to drive. Now let’s get to racing. Saturday morning comes slowly as I didn’t sleep much at all Friday night. Sign in, tech, and drivers’ meeting pass by and then off to the first session on track. I am quickly reminded that this is a Club Race not another open lapping day! One of the GTB1 Caymans in my class finishes 5 seconds faster than any of my times from the day before. Hmmm… time to put on the good tires and start driving like I mean it! At a club race, Rocky Johnson they grid you up based on your lap times, giving the # 1 a and that makes it nice in practice for two run for his money. reasons. First, you get to run a mostly clean track and second, you can work with and Corey Harbold learn from like drivers around you. Corey making his move Harbold drives a G class car at about the on the inside! same pace as me. Yes, I have a lot more car than he does, but he is a better driver than I am. I have learned a lot from Corey (and many others) by following him around many tracks. As we start the hour long enduro race, I find myself running close to Corey and think, “Great, he will help me drive out of this messy start.” The problem came when I started running over him on the long straights and that just slowed us both down. I learned a little that race about not fighting with others who are not in your class, as it just hurts you both. I ended the enduro with first in class and 8th overall. I was feeling good that tomorrow could be my day, as well. Sunday started well with the first 30-minute sprint race going my way and another first place finish. Funny thing during that race was that I looked down with 5 minutes to October 11

go and saw I was out of gas. I radioed in at one point to my wife, “Wow, I have never put my car into sixth gear on a race track before!” I was trying to save gas to make the finish line! The last sprint race was the best of the weekend. David, my fellow Maverick in my class, started beside me and I felt it was going to be a hard race to the finish. We rolled tighter and tighter together right to the heart stopping drop of the green flag, raced into turn one side-by-side and on into corner two when the car in front of me ran though the dirt of the apex. It made a thick cloud that made me think of Ricky Bobby driving though the smoke! Now quickly running down to the fast right hander of corner three before the long straight, I squeezed over left onto the fast line ahead of David and behind a fast GTC Cup car. As we all screamed down the “hang man” straight, the adrenalin is off the chart now. Then the Cup cars in front of me (and not David) started to fight at 135 mph and started checking up early! As I started my braking early with them, David rolled by on my right into the tight apex now blocked on the left by the Cup cars and me. I remember thinking, “Man, I wish I would have stayed on the right!” As we settled in over the next few laps, I think at times, I

12

was inches from David’s bumper as we squeezed in and out of corners playing cat and mouse. I started learning where I was faster and the line that David liked to run. It was a blast making runs up beside David into corners I had no chance of passing in. But now I had a plan… I was going to back off and get a run down 13, 14, 15 into 1 and 2 where I was faster than him - making my push around the inside of turn two to claim the position. But all of a sudden, I learned I had As Bryan is about to overtake David, Corey already beat myself! feels someone breathing In my rush to run tight down his neck. to David’s bumper and brake late and hard in all the corners, I had been starving my poor brakes of that all important cooling air! Oh no, it can’t be that I boiled my brakes! It was over, as I slowed down and David faded away from me over the remaining 4 or so laps. Live and learn - I always do that the hard way! All in all, it was a great weekend on a great track. I can’t wait to do it again!

My first Porsche was a surprise from my wife. She arranged for me to meet Keith Beitter, my sales consultant, and I had an excellent experience. When the lease was up, I returned to Park Place Porsche, and they again met my needs with no hassle. My current car is a 2009 Cayman S, which is an improved version of my previous 2007 Cayman, and I love it just the way it is. Park Place does much more than just sell and service cars – they help their clients truly enjoy the Porsche driving experience. We participated in our first Park Place Porsche driving event about a month ago, and it was perfect. It was a rally-style drive through twisty roads that culminated in a wonderful steak lunch. It was fantastic to share the experience with a great group of people who also appreciate Porsches. All dealers look the same from the outside, but what matters most is the people inside the dealership, and that’s what impresses me most about Park Place Porsche. They make me feel important, and they offer that same customer experience to everyone, whether they purchase new or pre-owned. They’re professional and deal with you in an open, face-to-face, comfortable relationship so that you know you matter. There’s just no comparison to Porsche or to Park Place.

Newbies at Boxstoberfest By Tom Froehlich

t was late spring this year that our Maverick Region friends, John and BJ Harvey, told us about this great fall event in the hill country of Texas called Boxstoberfest. From their description, it was an event that was not to be missed. So we called the Fredericksburg Inn and made our hotel reservations for the weekend after Labor Day to assure we had a place to stay. But it was several months before I actually went online to register for the event. Much to my surprise, there was no entry fee, the only cost was for organized meals during the weekend.

checked in to the Inn and headed over to the Auslander to register and join our other Maverick friends in attendance. As a bonus, we were able to drink some authentic German beer and sample a platter of various German sausages and cheeses. It was a great way to get started. After the appetizers, we joined the Harveys for dinner at a wonderful place called the Herb Garden where we had a truly gourmet meal with some delicious wine from the hill country. By the time we were done, we were all ready for a good night’s sleep back at the Inn.

Friday, September 10 rolled around more quickly than I expected and after quickly packing up, we headed out. We took the back way, down US 281 through Lampasas down to Johnson City, then west on US 290 to our destination. We

Saturday morning, we got up early and had breakfast before going to the car wash and preparing for the show and shine. After a quick cleaning, we were ready and headed over to the Gillespie County Airport where all the cars

16

were lined up on the tarmac. It was impressive to see the 90+ Porsches all lined up with small aircraft in the background and while Boxsters were in the majority, the cars on display ran the gamut of the Porsche line, except for the Cayenne. There was even a new Panamera Turbo at the event. Over 150 participants wandered around socializing and checking out the beautiful collection of our beloved marque. Shortly before 10 a.m. we were called to the drivers’ meeting in preparation for the day’s drives. There were 3 events: a tour, a rally, and a scenic drive. We went with the tour drive which was the largest group and was the longest event. The tour covered 240 miles of incredible hill country roads, including 2 of the 3 famous “twisted sisters.” If you haven’t heard of them, they are 3 Texas Ranch Roads, 335, 336 and 337, that twist, turn and go up and down some of the most beautiful and remote topo of the central Texas hill country between Fredericksburg and San Antonio. The morning was overcast and cool for Texas and everyone in a drop top had theirs down, enjoying the pleasure of open air driving. 120 miles down the road we stopped for lunch at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle shop, where they also have a barbeque restaurant. Everyone got their fill of beef brisket or pulled pork before hitting the road again. The afternoon was warmer and the clouds had vanished, so after lunch most put their tops up and turned on the air conditioning for the rest of the drive. Even with the top up, the beauty of the drive wasn’t diminished, but we were spared further sun damage to our somewhat weathered brows. We arrived back at the airport around 4 p.m. where we all convened on the officers’ club for more conversation and some adult beverages. An hour later we headed back to the Inn for a cooling afternoon swim before the evening’s celebratory dinner.

The Harveys and Froehlichs at the Auslander Friday evening after event registration

Region’s own Brian and Beth Morgan won the event in their first ever rally, missing the mileage mark on the rally by only 1/10 of a mile. The most important fact, though, was that the rally didn’t damage their marriage. The only problem is that they now Brian Morgan accepting the think that this rally stuff is Rally award at dinner easy. Anyone who’s rallyed Saturday evening before knows that 1 win in a rally is 1 win and your next experience will be completely different. Congratulations on your win, Brian and Beth, and best of luck on your next rally. As former first time winners, Susan and I can tell you, “It will be different next time.” There was also an award for most lost, won by Tom and Linda Bragaw, and they had won last year’s rally! There lies a another cautionary tale for any prior winners. The rest of the evening was spent in great fun and camaraderie with a drawing in which everyone won something and some won more than once. The organizers had an amazing collection of prizes donated by many sponsors and everyone went home that night with something they won.

Chatting in the Officers Club at the Hangar Hotel after the Saturday drive

The Saturday evening dinner was held at the Inn on Baron Creek, so all we had to do was walk across the street. The food was ample and a typical Tex-Mex fajita dinner. The real treat was the awards ceremony where the Rally winners were announced. Maverick

turned north on 281 and headed home.

Sunday morning we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at the Bakery in downtown Fredericksburg. Steve Boyd and Michael Shassere had organized another “secret drive” for Sunday morning that went to the LBJ ranch for a tour but the Harveys and the Froehlichs decided we needed to start back to Big D instead. After a short detour on the way back to see Enchanted Rock near Llano, we

As newbies, we can truly say it was a great weekend of fun and regardless of the model Porsche you drive, you will enjoy this event. Boxstoberfest is a joint effort put on by Maverick, Longhorn, and Hill Country Regions. This year was their 13th year hosting and they plan to keep on going. Be sure to put this on your calendar for next year. I have been told by reliable sources it is always the weekend after Labor Day. We hope to see you there next year on September 9th thru 11th!

Cliff’s Ramblings: CVAR by Cliff Blackshear

T

his recent labor-day weekend I found myself caught up with most of my chores and had nothing planned for the weekend. So I called a friend to tell him the license plate light assemblies for his 1978 911SC had come in and I had them in my possession. He answered my call and reported that he was working flag/safety on a corner for CVAR (Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing) at Texas World Speedway and had been there all that day (Friday). He went on and on about the cool vintage cars that were there.

Photo by Cliff Blackshear the car with my cell phone. I sent them to my friend that I was talking to because she wanted to see it, as well. That is a rare car. The owner actually went out and did pace car duty for one race in it. Vey cool stuff. It just got better from there. The first group of open wheeled cars was mostly Vee’s. Not much fun to watch as a spectator, but I could see some pretty good competitive driving was going on with some. Then the next group of open wheeled cars came out. The car that was on pole, turned out to be an ex-Jack Brabham F1 car. I have yet to get the exact model. I think it could be a BT35 with a modified front wing, but I’m not sure. It was really fast and left the field with so much ease. My corner worker friend tells me he talked to the owner and he is absolutely loving the chance to experience the car. Behind him were some super quick Formula Atlantics. Watching these guys dive into turn one was pretty cool. The Formula Ford field was big and some great racing went on there.

I have worked flag/safety at two CVAR events in the not too distant past. One at Hallett, Oklahoma and one at Eagles Canyon, here in Texas. For someone of my age it is pretty cool to witness, especially from a corner station. A lotta English stuff (Sprites, Midgets, Bee’s, TR’s, few Cortinas, early 911’s, an occasional 356, etc.). You rarely see a 356, which is just Then the sedans came out. If shameful. We usually see a few what I was told is correct three of Alphas, many open wheeled cars What’s this, a Ferrari Dino? the Mustangs on course were rare (Formula Vee, Formula Super Vee, factory prep R model race cars. Formula Ford, and a few Formula Atlantics), etc. You also Unbelievable. What caught my eye during that race session get the ground pounders - big bore V8 cars from the early was a duel at the back of the pack between a Cortina and a days... Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes and such. 911. As they came off the final corner onto the main straight, the 911 was in the lead. Yet the Cortina had more exit speed The cool thing is the heritage of some of the machines. and passed the 911 midway down the straight. Then on These are not replicas. They are the real deal, saved from entry to turn one the 911 went inside and took the position the past and fell into the hands of people who still want back. They did this lap after lap. A real good dog fight. Then to race them against other cars of that era. It is interesting near the end of the race, the 911 appeared out of the last to watch. Shelby GT350 Mustang’s, Sunoco Camaro Z28’s, corner, with about an extra 2 car lengths lead. Two laps later Maclarens, Lolas etc. the checker came out and the 911 driver prevailed. It was I pulled up an email from Doug Mains about a call for awesome to watch and I was so excited for both drivers… corner workers. I had declined working a corner as I thought They had a good weekend. I was going to be doing something else that weekend, which There was a 911 on course with Jagermeister decals on ultimately did not happen. The email had the entire schedule it. It looked familiar, as if I had seen it years ago, but I was for the event attached and I printed it out. unable to get info on the car. I made the drive to the track and parked. I called a dear So here I am posting an article with a picture of a Ferrari friend while walking from the car just to chat about my Dino in Slipstream. It was deliberate. I thought about all the arrival, etc. As we are talking, I turned the corner around folks I see and talk to in my shop. No one I have met, would the concession building and there is a bright red Ferrari not appreciate what I saw this weekend. Dino. Top off, keys in the ignition and no one around but me. WOW! It was beautiful, automotive art. My camera Just Rambling Along! died a few months ago so I could only take a few shots of Cliff October 19

Member Spotlight: Chuck Bray by Andrea Bell

T

his month’s new member spotlight is on Chuck Bray. Before we start, I have a confession - Chuck is not new to my family. He IS family! Chuck is actually my brother-in-law. Chuck owns a black 2006 Carrera S. He purchased it from a friend about two years ago. Before that he was exclusively a Corvette fan - having worked on Chevrolets since he was a teenager. Bryan (my husband) kept inviting him to come out to our various driving events and he finally gave in. He brought his Corvette out several times but Bryan managed to bring him over the “dark side” (Chuck’s own words, not mine.) He’s now been converted from Chevy to Porsche! Chuck says, “The more I drive the Porsche, the more I am impressed with its handling and reliability. It’s nice to drive a car hard and

Photo by Nicki Bray have no mechanical failures. You just have to replace the brakes and tires.” Chuck was so impressed with Porsche, that he has finally joined our Maverick family. He and his family have lived in the Dallas area since 1987. He is married to Nicki (Bryan’s sister) and has two children. Whitney is 24 and is in graduate school at Oklahoma University. Hunter is 21 and a senior at Texas A&M University. It seems that Hunter may be going over to the “dark side” as well. He is attending his first DE event this weekend and sharing his dad’s car. Besides driving, Chuck’s other hobbies include golf and old muscle cars. Please join me in welcoming Chuck and his family to my “other” family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org.

Happy Hour at Trinity Pub by Chris Christensen

O

ver thirty Mavericks came out to celebrate Happy Hour at the Trinity Pub, located at Mockingbird Station. We hope everyone had a good time with plenty of good food and drink. There seemed to be adequate parking available in the two covered garages that were protecting our valuable assets!

Photos by Chris Christensen was a representative from Park Place Porsche, Jeff Van Sicklen. Jeff joined us at Roundup, as well, sporting a new Spyder- not a bad job, Jeff - this time he drove a yellow 911. Welcome Jeff, we enjoy your company and beautiful Porsche rides.

By the way, eating out on the balcony The Trinity management provided a had one significant nice touch with adding welcome signs advantage... at our location written in English and listening to the Gaelic. We had a large crowd, so some folks volunteered to move to an outside table, although there was room elsewhere inside. For those who sat outside, it was not too hot-maybe due to an earlier shower that helped cool the night air. We had a few new PCA members join us at Happy Hour this month, they were Margaret and Nicholas Klemmer, both we understand drive 911’s. They have recently moved from Raleigh, N . C . Pettit joined in the fun, they own a 911 Turbo S…they might be the early birds at all future HH’s. Congratulations, and we hope to see all of you at Happy Hours and other upcoming Maverick events. In addition, this writer’s Son-in-Law, Mark Deuber, joined in the fun. He drives a 911 and our daughter a new Panamera. Hey, we’re looking to be adopted. Also at the Happy Hour 24

Come and enjoy an evening with us next month!

We do hope that we will have a good turn-out at next month’s happy hour on October 21st. We have been moving locations so that almost everyone will have a turn at driving a bit less to our monthly HH venues. In October, Happy Hour will be at Uncle Julio’s, 16150 Dallas Parkway, Dallas, TX. There may be a surprise from one of our decorated drivers from the 1980’s. See you all there.

thought it appropriate that Time Trial Boyd in his STi and Dan Ashley in his Evo provided for the Chair, Travis Howard, started the entertainment of all. As a former STi owner, you have to Time Trial driver’s meeting with appreciate those cars as well. a moment of silence in remembrance of the nine year anniversary of 9-11. We have not forgotten! But after that somber note, the festivities began with a quick but informative driver’s meeting. With only 24 entrants (13 of those being P-car drivers) Mike Lockas, Chief of Workers, had a difficult time filling jobs with drivers. Once this task was overcome, James and Mark Wilkinson announced that Jim Hedderick stopped by Mineral Wells on his way home from out of state. the family brought trays full of BBQ brisket, The day ended early for many of the participants only hot dogs, chips, and tea for all in preparation for our to start the task of setting out the cones for the autocross lunch break. It was an excellent lunch as proved by the course for some of the others. This course was originally designed by Josh Dexter, a driver new to autocross only this year. His experience has been limited to only the Time Trial and Autocross schools and a couple events. Despite his inexperience, he submitted a course that I believe many participants would use adjectives such as innovative, inspired, and “technical without the sea of cones syndrome” to describe the design. Unfortunately, we could not use the entire course due to the limitation of only a few available corner workers per shift. But it still turned out to the one of the longest in terms of time on the course. With 12 runs for the day everyone was pretty “driven out.”

Josh Dexter gets really close to a cone.... wait!! Is that lifting I see? Better check the car for cone evidence.

overflowing donation coffee can collecting for the club’s charity, the Huffaker Hughes Hope House for battered women and children. Thank you Wilkinson family!

Looking at the results I think you will be pleasantly surprised that with the performance factor of the car taken into consideration, Avery Murphy was the #1 Driver of the Day. Of course, Ray Kelley was close behind with Mike Lockas in third. Just a note on Mike, notice how consistent he is in his times as well as placing in the top 5; truly a great driver and instructor. However, the superstar of the day was Michael Pelletier with fastest Porsche Driver of the Day. We won’t mention that David Whitener in his CRX earned the Top Time of Day award.

Onto the driving; and there was a lot of driving with only 24 drivers. The action was free of drama with few spins and fewer mechanical problems. The results showed that Ray Kelley has not lessened his game while capturing the Porsche Top Time of the Day. However, the second fastest Porsche driver may or may not surprise you. I only hope I can drive that well at 70+ years old. Well done, Richard Diller! Michael Pelletier rounded out the top three but more on him later. Of course, Ray Kelley shows us how to expertly maneuver a gate. great credit has to go to the duel that Paul 26

female that she is, so Tannia graciously allowed me to drive her newly purchased Boxster (1998 986) for the weekend. All is fine until the technical inspector (me) noticed that the rear pads were slim. Needless to say, we wore out those rear pads during the Time Trial. As Tannia searched for another pair, Michael Pelletier volunteered to ask Chris Amond for a pair. Chris happened to have a set and donated them to Tannia and me, all in the name of racing. Thanks Chris! Michael delivered the pads Sunday morning. While I have changed a few Boxster pads, I could not get the retaining pin to slide out. Within minutes of me sweating, grunting, and breaking a punch, I had 6 people helping me install those

pads. And they did, thanks guys, all in the name of racing. So we were all set for the autocross. The morning runs went well, but during the afternoon runs, it is possible that I might have overcooked the brake fluid therefore ending the day for Tannia’s car. Good thing, since the engine warning light was on. So is the lesson learned here that autocrossing will break your car? No, I think the lesson is that if the car is not adequately maintained, the car will let you know that during the autocross. That next weekend I bled the brakes. The fluid was cruddy. But I was apprehensive about solving the engine warning light. However, I used a code reader, found it was misfiring, sought sage advice, and changed the spark plugs. I didn’t even know where the spark plugs were on a Boxster before starting this project. In the end, I removed a broken spark plug and replaced the rest resulting in no more warning light and a car purring like it should. So if you have made it to this point, I commend your perseverance. You should be asking: “Jeff, if you have a point to make, make it already!” OK, so here they are: 1. Tell a friend about Time Trials and Autocrosses., then bring them!

2. Cars won’t break on an autocross unless they were previously in need of maintenance. 3. Try something new, design an autocross course, drive a Time Trial, or change your Boxster’s spark plugs.
