id you know that our region is one of the most active of all the Porsche Club regions? Well, it’s true and was mentioned several times at the National Porsche Parade this summer. Our recent and upcoming events prove that we continue to be that way. As I write this, about 23 Maverick cars have just returned from Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg, while several more are caravaning out to Porsche Escape in Flagstaff, Arizona. Meanwhile, our Autocross and Time Trials were going on at Mineral Wells for those of you who preferred to stay more local. Plus our fall DE’s are starting and it’s about to get a little cooler out! Of course, as a Porsche enthusiast you’ve probably been hearing about the upcoming 7th edition of the Porsche 911 Carrera (code named 991). It made its world-wide debut on September 14th at the Frankfurt Auto Show to much acclaim! Its U.S. debut will be at the Rennsport Reunion IV at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca October 14-16, 2011. The first U.S. deliveries of the car to customers will be on February 4th, 2012. The new Porsche 911 is quite the car. I encourage you to visit Porsche.com/ usa to find out all about it. How about some more great news? Our region has now grown past 2,000 members! Nationally, the Porsche Club of North America is now well over 104,000 members (an all-time high), and continues to be the largest singlemarque club in the world. 2

What events are upcoming? 1. Please turn back to page 1 and look at our calendars and references to ads in each issue of Slipstream 2. Please visit our website mav.pca.org and check out the upcoming events at the bottom of the homepage. 3. I’ve started sending out a Calendar preview email at the end of each month so you’ll know about upcoming events since the following month’s Slipstream hasn’t arrived yet. Please, If you’re not getting my email, but would like to, please send the email addresses for you and/or your associate member to president@mavpca. org. I’ll edit the list and keep your email addresses up to date.

Thanks for all your suggestions and participation. We’re looking at updating our website as well, and have had two or three members with those skills already volunteer to help us. We’ve each got our talents and likes, so please feel free to jump in where you can assist.

Mav of the Month

Each month we look for the volunteer or volunteers who stand out in how they’ve contributed to the club. Sometimes because they’re so efficient and effective, we overlook the ones who have contributed continuously year after year. Such is the case this month when we discovered our faux-pas by not recognizing the ongoing contributions by Bill Miller, who is the Cochair for the Club Race that we host each year. Bill runs meetings, coordinates with National, gathers the workers, adjusts the schedule and makes sure everything runs smoothly. And does so quietly without any hiccups. So Bill, we finally figured it out - you’re Mr. Steady whom we can always count on. So receive your just rewards: Mav of the Month and a gift card to the Silver Fox. Enjoy your dinner! John

President John Hamilton C-817-907-7823 president@mavpca.org

John enjoys DE’s, Happy Hours, Porsche Parade and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab so that’s how it got in his blood.

Chris has been a Maverick for over ten years and owned a 2000 Boxster S. He recently sold it with tears in his eyes… Welcome, dream car; a 2010 Carrera Cab. Now that the tears have dried up, he’s having a blast! Here’s to sharing the fun in our events with many Mav’s throughout 2011.

an you believe it’s already October? With less then 90 shopping days left before Christmas, we’re in full swing with no less then ten Club events in this month alone. How fun is that?!!

I want to take a moment and tell you that if you aren’t already involved in one or more aspects of the Maverick Region, you’re missing out. Over the summer, as well as this last month, I’ve had more fun with my daughter, Amanda. At first it was working on Slipstream together, but lately it’s become more intense. You see, she caught the itch that so many of us have in driving our cars. She has found out how fun it really is when you are at full throttle running against the clock. Have a look at the cover, can’t you see the excitement? If any of you have a spouse, children or other family members watching from the side line, get them behind the wheel and experience the thrill and the fun of building your relationship. I look forward to each and every time Amanda comes home from school so we can have another triple D weekend... Daddy, Daughter and Driving! It truly is a blast so before the year is over, sign up and share the excitement.

“It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

Maverick Minutes

Madhu Rao, Secretary

I

would like to thank Lisa Steele for her willingness to record the minutes from this meeting on my behalf.

John Hamilton started off the meeting with the statement, “I hope this meeting is efficient and not lengthy.” Everyone in the room looked happy to keep their reports quick and to the point. Madhu Rao was unable to attend the meeting but John happily reported information on Madhu’s behalf. Madhu thanked everyone in the region (that is you!) for your great response to the Maverick Region survey. Our region generated☺190 completed surveys for a 16% response rate. Great job! For more information check the September edition of Slipstream for an article which presented a synopsis of the survey. Additionally, Madhu presented an update regarding the 2012 Maverick Region elections. He thanked the nominating committee for their help with the election as they have produced a full ballot for the Executive Council offices now. The ballot will be printed in the October issue of Slipstream. Those interested in voting may do so via mail and/or in person at the Founders’ Day event on November 12, when the results will be announced. Madhu also shared a concept idea of posting the ballot on the Maverick Region website. He is looking into the feasibility of doing this. Robyn Howard confirmed to everyone that there will be a Swap Meet on Oct.1st at Zims. She also reminded everyone of the Time Trial and Autocross for the upcoming weekend. Jim Falgout reported that $14,000 still needs to be paid by advertisers. We have a current club balance of $38,000. Richard Bradley announced that Slipstream is going very well and he still has several Parade articles to publish in the upcoming months. Chris Christensen informed the group that all insurance is covered. He also reminded the group that the next Happy Hour will be at Trinity Hall Pub which is always a great location for Mavericks to get together. Carey Spreen announced that there will be a Tour/ Photo Rally to San Martino Winery on Oct. 23. Carey also brought a few samples of older Slipstreams and would like for them to be on display at this Founder’s Day to show how far our club has come over the past 50 years. Ed Mullenix is still working on possibly confirming a Tech Session for October. He plans on talking with Nerces at Autoscope to set up a Dyno Day for October 22. 8

Brendan Eagan has been busy contacting the local dealerships to help promote and encourage people to join PCA. Park Place, Boardwalk, and Autobahn all agreed to put a Slipstream, Panorama, and our local brochure in every right seat of new and used Porsches that go out the door. Way to go Brendan! Are you trying to tell Lisa Steele that you want the Membership Chair position? Mike Brodigan noted that he had a meeting with the DE committee. The focus of the meeting was to decrease expenses. One idea that came out of the meeting was a special one day DE/TT event. This one-day event will run two events, a DE in the first half and a Time Trial in the second half. This exciting event is scheduled for May 2, and the event has a special name, The Texas 2-Step! More to come... John Harvey was excited to announce that he would be leaving Friday for Boxtoberfest in Fredericksburg. He sure was excited that we will have 23 couples from the Maverick Region attending this year. The event has an all time high of 111 cars this year. John also reported that on September 25, the Sunday Drive group will drive to Cresson and visit the track, Motorsport Ranch, to get a little introduction to DE. Denny Payne reported that for the first time ever we submitted our local Web Page at Parade. He was pleased to announce that we received high marks from two judges with some really good feedback that Denny plans on incorporating. Denny is also looking for people to help redesign the website. Christy Payne did not have much to report. She reminded the group that this year’s Founder’s Day will be on November 12, at the Hilton in Southlake. Lisa Steele was very excited to report that we have exceeded the 2,000 mark for membership. We currently have 2,012 members in our wonderful club. She was elated to share that the number of non-renewals is decreasing each month. WooHoo! Way to go Membership Team!! Linda Bambina is working hard with the 50th Anniversary events and activities. She is starting to write Articles containing special events, activities, or quotes from Mavericks. She will be contacting people via email so make sure you respond with all of your special memories of the Maverick Region Porsche Club. Wendy Shoffit announced that she has about 30 directories available. She also noted that our local Club Race registration will open this weekend. Wendy has also been busy getting ideas from other editors of other regions. She shared with

September 7, 2011

the group a printed postcard from one Region, which listed several upcoming events. Another region has a Wounded Warriors Project which helps people injured in war. These individuals are invited out to various events. She posed the question: “Are there additional charities we should look at in addition to Hope Shelter?” Barbara and Tom Minnella were present and had nothing to report. However, you will see Tom’s name on this year’s Officer Ballot as he will be running for Vice President. Look for the Ballot soon with these names: President – John Hamilton, Vice President – Tom Minnella, Treasurer – Jim Falgout, Secretary – Madhu Rao. Travis Howard noted that 11 people were currently signed up for the upcoming Time Trial and 14 cars were registered for the Autocross. John Hamilton ended the very efficient meeting with announcing that Bill Miller has been chosen as this month’s Mav of the Month. Congratulations, Bill! Meeting adjourned at 8:11 pm.

Too Fast, Too Furious By Amanda Bradley Photos by Richard Bradley

I

t’s that time of year again - Time Trial and Autocross are back. The Mavs met on September 10th and 11th in Mineral Wells to kick off the second half of the season. It started with a bang – literally! There was even a track puppy, Femke, and a track bird, Birdy, or “Chicken” as we called it. It was my second time to attend a Time Trial. I felt a lot more confident this time – especially in driving a stick. I started out with a slower time, but quickly knocked off eight seconds or more with the help of Ray Kelly, our Region’s number one male driver, instructing me. The track was slightly different than last time, just enough to make it more interesting. And the best part, my dad, Richard Bradley, was participating as well. My inner-competitive nature came out,

but he still beat me, just barely! It is so nice to be able to share such a fun weekend experience with my dad. It was a little difficult having to share the Boxster all day, (all the more reason to get my own, right?), but it got especially hard when my last run came around. I was finally going to drive on my own. My dad had just finished his last run of the day and had spun out several times (way to go daddy-o!). As I pulled up to the starting line, everyone came running towards me telling me not to go anywhere. My back tire was corded. I tried to look on the bright side by telling myself I drove so fast I burnt through my tires. The same day, Robyn Howard drove so fast she cracked her top driver numbers. Deane Yamada drove so fast in his beautiful Chevy Corvette that he broke his front rotor. To follow that, Michael Pelletier over heated and had to be pushed back to the tarmac. But

you know what they say, “You got to risk it to get the biscuit!” We were all pushing the limits, and most of us were very happy with our outcomes.

That evening we went to dinner at the Mesquite Pit with Tannia Dobbins, Jeff Herrmann, Travis and Robyn Howard, Al and Pat Silva, and Joel Nannis. We enjoyed drinks, barbeque, fried food – even fried bacon! It was a nice time. The next morning started off bright and early again. Tannia Dobbins was nice enough to let me drive her Spec Boxster in the Autocross since my tire was still ruined. It was a little bit of a change having to shift with a lightweight flywheel. Who knew such a little change could make such a big difference? However, I still was able to get my times down and had my fastest time, a 105, in the afternoon run. It may not have been a great time in comparison to others, but it was enough to please me. I’m sure I could have done better in my own car, but there is always next time. At the end of the day, Ray Nannis, corded his tires as well. I guess we were all driving too fast and too furious, but hey, sometimes you got to drive it like

you stole it. It is more fun that way. The Autocross event had a lot more drivers than the Time Trial, as well as several attendees driving Nissans, Mazdas, and Infinitis. It was nice to see other people enjoying the Maverick events as much as we do. At the

end of the day, we all had a great time. The weather was not too bad, and although we were exhausted, it was well worth it and a great experience. Oh, and Travis, don’t forget you have two cases of water left for the next event!

Is PCA a Car Club? Article and Photos by Charlie

W

Davis

hy do we attend PCA events? Is it because of the cars or the people? The short answer is, of course, “Yes.” The longer answer is, “We are attracted to people who love Porsche cars,” but it’s more complex than that. That complexity is the reason for this article...read on. Years ago, a wise MR member coined the slogan, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people,” and this has become the PCA motto. Those of us who attend Parade yearly go for the people. We have made friends who are almost extended family members. We only get to see most of them once a year. And each year, we make new friends. Sure, we like the cars, but the real reason we go back each year is our friends. At Savannah, I learned that one of my old friends had passed away. I first met Gary Johnson at the Portland Parade in 2006. There was a row of folding chairs and he was sitting in one of them, in the shade surrounding the Concours d’Elegance. I struck up a conversation because Gary had the most interesting face I had ever seen! It was mid-day and many people were getting in line for lunch. I was taking pictures with fewer bodies in the way. Gary didn’t have a lunch ticket. Hmmm... I asked why? He said he was the truck driver for Skip Shirley and hadn’t been provided with a lunch ticket. Knowing Skip, I knew it was an oversight and I offered to go talk with Skip, but Gary declined my offer...something about not wanting to be a bother? I sat down and made a new friend. Took a few pictures of his amazing face and learned that he was very poor. Gary had a tough life and his face showed it. I loved one of those pictures of Gary and sent him a copy of it. I saw Gary again at the San Diego Parade in 2007 and we went to lunch together. He hadn’t gotten the picture I sent! I got his address again and sent him another 12

one. I never found out if he got it? He said he wanted to give it to his kids... This year, I asked Skip about Gary and he told me that Gary had died of a heart attack. Sad, but I was pleased to have had this friend, even for just a brief time. Skip’s obituary for Gary was short: “He had a good heart!” Skip told me a story this year about Gary: When he was 17, he was in a bad car accident and his left eye was left dangling. The doctors put it back, but it was a bit lower than it should be. I guess that contributed to the “look” that I found so intriguing? Without Parades, I would never have met Gary or seen/photographed his fantastic face. This year, I was on the Photography Team. One of my fellow photographers on the Team is now my best friend in PCA! We’ve been using e-mails, Facebook, and the phone to extend our friendship. Jean-Francois Bulycz (Americans can’t pronounce his last name...he says “bullets” is close enough) has some amazing stories! He’s a 35-year

PCA member, but this was his 1st Parade! During that time, he also was a member of the Porsche Clubs in Hong Kong, England, France, and Germany. He explained that his jobs took him to much of the world and he was never able to get active with PCA... but he always kept his membership. He lives in Old Greenwich, CT and is a member of CVR. He is now an active CVR member...helps Prescott Kelly with events and takes pictures for their newsletter. He’s an old man at 76, but doesn’t look it. He runs and cycles and he’s small and wiry like a runner/cyclist. He shaves his head, but he showed me a picture with hair...he looks better with a shaven head. [grin] So, how did this Frenchman get to the USA? He graduated from Adelphi University in 1958 and was anxious to make some $$$, but he received a nice letter from the French government with a one way ticket to Algeria’s killing fields (you youngsters can Google this and learn some history). He discovered that the USA and France had a reciprocity agreement that allowed him to serve in the US Armed Forces

Gary Johnson of San Diego, a man with a good heart.

and it would fulfill his French military obligation. The US Marines were glad to have him...his fellow Marines could not pronounce his last name, so they gave him his nickname: “Bullets.” That seems an appropriate name! Best of all, he managed to stay out of Vietnam, in spite of being fluent in French. Bonus: He got his US citizenship! His 1st Porsche was a 1970 911S Targa. He sold it years ago, but has recently located the current owner and plans to go see it this summer... he is thinking about making the guy an offer? He has decided that his old 1970 911S was/is his first love. His current Porsche is a 2008 C4S Cab. He’s gotten the racing bug and is thinking about getting a race car, so that may dictate what his next car is. He didn’t bring his car to Savannah, so we gave him a few rides. We went to dinner on an off night. He bought the bottle of wine (I owe him now). Now to the important stuff: He has Nikon gear. I have difficulty liking

people with Canon kits! [joke] Jean-Francois LOVED his 1st Parade! He is planning to attend the 2012 Parade in Salt Lake City. I told him about all you guys in Maverick Region...said you were friendly, active, and some of you were crazy (you know if I’m describing YOU). If you attend Parade next year (and you should!), I’ll introduce you to my new best friend, Jean-Francois. Heck, he could be one of our many Honorary Maverick Region members? You new members really should try a Parade. The People are outstanding! And there are some nice cars too... Footnote: After I had completed this article, I got an e-mail from JeanFrancois...he was in the Emergency room! He went out for his normal 25 mile bike ride on back-country roads...he says it was a beautiful morning. About 6.5 miles into his ride a truck pulling a trailer had to stay right to avoid oncoming traffic and hit Jean-Francois. He doesn’t

Jean-Francois “Bullets” Bulycz

remember the hit, just the driver telling him he was sorry. So far, he seems to have “dodged the bulycz”...nothing broken; brain and spine intact. I asked him how he felt and he answered: “Sore like when you get hit by a truck or spent the night in a food processor!” I’m just thankful I didn’t lose another friend...

Driving the Tail of the Dragon By Jean and Dave Frick other than straight line interstates.

Jean and Dave Frick ready to run the Tail of the Dragon!

W

hen we first decided to attend the 2011 Porsche Parade in Savannah, we looked at an AAA map to see the best way to get there. A straight shot on I-20 would mean two long days or three easy days. As we did reviews of the map a few other ideas began to form. We had relatives in Nashville, TN, we had not seen in a few years and this would be a nice time to visit. From Nashville, the route became a little more interesting. Looking at a Mad Map of the area, BINGO... The Tail of the Dragon seemed to jump off the page. We had heard about it and wondered if we would ever get a chance to drive it. Now was our chance. Further review of the Mad Map, plus searches on the Internet, resulted in our scheduling a week for our trip to Parade. After Nashville, a stop in Knoxville, TN and a stop in Dillsboro, NC, would give us some time to enjoy the Cayman on roads

Curve ahead...

16

The first road of interest is named the Devil’s Triangle located north of Oak Ridge, TN. Considered a little more challenging than the Dragon, it wound its way up the side of a mountain and down the other side. Taking about two and a half hours for the 44 mile drive, we arrived safely at the other end. No problem with “road boredom” here. Not only are the turns and switchbacks a challenge, a coal mine at the top had trucks lumbering down. This must be a real thrill for those drivers. No other Porsches or motorcycles were encountered on the triangle, which was a surprise. After a night in Knoxville, we drove to the top of the Dragon. We stopped at a motel/restaurant for a breather and to see if there was any news we should be aware of. While talking to the owner, two orange Porsches pulled up. Lee and John out of the Chicago Region had stopped to take a break. The contrast of the Boxster and the GT was striking and we wondered which would have more fun. Talking to them at Parade, they both had fun. At least 20 or more motorcycles drove by while we chatted. Since this was a Thursday, we were curious as to why they were not at work. We later found about 80 cycles at the bottom of the Dragon, so I guess this is where they spend their vacation. But I digress. We turned on the GoPro camcorder I had mounted on the dash and entered the Dragon. Ten point five

Garmin on the job.

miles and 318 turns showed us why the Dragon is considered one of the best motorcycle drives in the country. As we drove, I remembered something an instructor kept telling me during one of my early Drivers’ Ed classes. “Use the whole road - you paid for it, so use it.” I wished many times I could use the whole road, but this is not practical on the Dragon. Jean had a ball taking pictures with her new VR lens. One highlight was passing a cyclist during the run. We were passed by a few, but think we think we held our own. At the bottom, we stopped at the Deals Gap Motorcycle Rest Stop. Lots of cycles, but only a few cars. After a few pictures to record the moment, we left for our stop that night at Dillsboro, NC. To find additional information about the Dragon and other great roads in Tennessee, go to tailofthedragon.com. Now, next year’s Parade is in Salt Lake City, UT. Hummm... if we drive a little south of Denver, I think there are some neat roads in Colorado. Have to get a Mad Map of that area.

“Enchanting” Drive to High Plains Article and Photos by Bob Kuykendall to get out of town and hit the road! And so, the journey begins……..

O

Early departure.

K, so August is a hot and awful time of year in north Texas. My water and electric bill just hit all time highs! Worse yet, there are no Maverick track or driving events to look forward to. Guess I will just have to wait until September. But, as I peruse my latest copy of Panorama, I began to wonder about events in other states that are within reasonable driving distance from Dallas/Ft Worth, where the temps might be a little more bearable. And then I saw it- the PCA Club Race and DE in Denver. Yes! It would be fun to try that new track that the Club Racers were raving about last year- High Plains Raceway, just east of Denver. So, I signed up online for the Driver’s Ed, and was good to go. Now, for route planning. Google showed the same route that I took two years ago for the Denver Parade- up through the panhandle, Amarillo, corner of New Mexico, Raton pass, and I-25. Boring, but scenic once you finally get out of Texas. So, what could I do to enliven the trip? I have always wanted to drive an area of northern New Mexico known as the “Enchanted Circle,” considered one of the great driving roads in North America. Hey, it’s not too far out of my way. The communities of Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, Angel Fire, and Taos Ski Valley are challenging me 18

First up, get the car packed. Radar detector- check! iTunes synchronized with the classics- Stones, CCR, Three Dog Night, Doobie Bros - check! OK - so I’m an oldie, but goodie! My Michelin Sport Cups, fresh brake fluid bleeding, a spare tire in the back seat of the 997, and a car jack. Oh, and my helmet and car numbers.

Maggies’ Diner. Yes, this is where John Travolta and Tim Allen duke it out with the notorious Del Fuegos biker gang. Too bad the Diner is now a touristy t-shirt shop, but the town itself is a really cool art and antiques shopping village. I sat outside a local B&B sipping a cappuccino and bought a copy of the “Green Chile Bible,” after all, hatch peppers will be here soon.

Amarillo by morning- just as George Strait beckons on the radio. Gotta stop for two things

I actually skipped Santa Fe, even though it is one of my favorite towns, as I have been there numerous

I’ve got a full tank of gas, it’s not dark... and I’m wearing sunglasses. in Amarillo, besides gas- The Big Texan Steakhouse, and the (weirdly) infamous Cadillac Ranch. T-bones and tailfins - only in Texas! On to New Mexico. Next morning, I jump off the Interstate, and take back roads around the east side of Sandia Peak instead of going through

The Enchanted Circle.

Albuquerque. I actually used my in-car navigation here, and I was surprised at how well the factory system works. It guides me through a small valley area just south of Santa Fe into the small town of Madrid. Where have I heard of this place? Wild Hogs! I am transformed into the set of the movie as I stop by

times. I’m anxious to get to Taos and start my “drive” around Wheeler Peak. But first, I will be stopping at Michael’s Kitchen Café and Bakery in downtown Taos for real “New Mex” food. It’s where we always ate on our way up to the ski mountain years ago. It’s still the best! OK, now for the fun part- It’s 53

Michaels Kitchen, watch out for the Del Fuegos!

miles to Red River, I’ve got a full tank of gas, it’s not dark... and I’m wearing sunglasses. Hit it! Unfortunately, the road north of Taos has been freshly graveled, so it’s slow going for twelve miles to avoid rock chips. But then, the going gets good as I drive the twisties into the mountain pines

on Route 38. Windows down, A/C off, no more Doobie Brothers, this is sheer nirvana. And I’m in a 911 with Sport Cup tires. Geez Louise! Red River is a cool little mountain town and good for a double pit stop. A nice local person spots my car and laments: “You’re not from around here, are you?” No, but I would like to be. More mountain roads. Slow moving traffic ahead, so I pull over and give them a 10-minute head start. I’ll catch them in five, but no hurry here, this is the good stuff and I’m loving every minute of it. The Audi station wagon I pass thinks about keeping up, but soon becomes lapped traffic.

Oooh, getting a little nippy as clouds move in, better put on that jacket. Alas, the mountain roads east of Eagles Nest eventually give way to flatlands, but I have gotten my fix, for now at least. All I have left to look forward to is two track-filled days in Denver……. is this a great country or what? High Plains is one hour east of Denver, next to a pasture filled with Buffalo. What a great 2.5 mile track! Lots of topo and similar to Laguna Seca, including the corkscrew blind drop.

Cooling down between runs...

There are at least ten Mavericks here, including a Texas flag proudly flying over the Spec Boxsters and other race cars. Awwww….the smell of Cup cars in the morning. I’ve decided it’s not just the cars or the people, it’s the Enchanted Circle and High Plains Raceway!

Cup Cars at High Plains.

Proudly flying the Texas flag!

disinterested in doings, some agitated and almost all have suffered through this check many times. Car after car I perform this menial task. It became readily apparent to me that these were some very experienced race cars. Many had the DME unit barely held in place with one fastener. Some even had the DME metal cover held in place by plastic tie wraps as they had been opened multiple times.

I would like to share some moments that stand out for me when it comes to interacting with him. About my 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of working as Chief Bottle Washer/Tech Inspector/Technician for the Maverick Region at the annual Mav sponsored club race I met Colin. The scrutineer at the event decided he wanted to check all cars in Colin’s class (F, I believe). Scrut decided we needed to pull all fuel/ignition control units (DME micro-pressors) out and open them up. Remove the chips inside and ensure software map was legal. So here I go; dive through a cage, work my way under the driver’s seat, remove the fasteners holding the unit down, disconnect the harness and hand it over to our scrutineer. Then reinstall it after his check is done and send the tired driver on his way after the wait. Most drivers are

CRUISE

We’re going to miss seeing # 21 on track.

Then this one 911 is next on my to-do list. It seems cleaner than the rest. Yet had rubber tire marbles collected all over it, much black tire fine mist all over it. It had seen much competition and was ready for more combat. It looked super well cared for. I dove through the cage and as I was starting to look under the seat, I thought, “Man this floor is clean.” When I looked under the seat it was absolutely spotless under there. The DME was firmly anchored to the floor and fasteners felt good when removed. Break away torque seemed correct. As I came out of my crouched position and found myself exclaiming, “Who is the driver/owner of this car?” A man in a driver’s suit steps up and says, “That would be me!” I looked at him and said, “This is the cleanest race car I’ve ever seen!” “You should look at the engine!” he replies, beaming with pride. We open the deck lid and it was spotless. Spotless after a test and tune day and a day of qualifying. Two days of track work and this car was absolutely as clean as any I’ve seen after one session at the track. Since that time I have had many interactions with Colin and always thought, “What a great guy to have in our Region.”

At Hallett Club Race a couple years ago, Colin was having a very good weekend. Things were going well. He was showing good lap times and finishing well. I think it was Sunday morning that I saw him talking to other drivers in his class. He walks by and he starts talking about all things occurring. At some point in the conversation he says, “Ya know I never seem to pass anyone that is not having a problem! Tires going off, down on power!” He then gives me that wry smile and goes about his business of enjoying the event. We will all miss you Colin, be safe my friend... Cliff

rish, Irish, Irish, that was our theme as our Maverick group descended through Dallas traffic to Trinity Hall Pub at Mockingbird Station.

Not only did our group enjoy, Irish stew, bangers and mash, as well as shepherd’s pie, Alan and Linda Bambina, had just returned from Savannah, where Porsche Parade was held. They said it was a wonderful time, visiting with friends old and new. Mike and Judy Brodigan, shared their stories of their past travels to Dublin Ireland. Mike and Alan even had Irish shirts on from their travels, see Mike’s in the picture. We had new members join us, Steve and Carol Locke, they have a Porsche 997. A warm welcome to them and we hope to see you again at one of our events. One of our Maverick member, Bob Aines, has purchased a Black 964 and is modifying it at his race shop in North Carolina. Tech Corner Article and photo by Ed Mullenix

W

ith the approach of cooler weather we are all anxious to take our Porsches out for a nice drive. Hopefully this year we will actually have some pleasant weather before winter. This year’s spring was beautiful, both days of it! If you’ve been driving your car all summer and observing the recommended servicing, just check the tire pressure and oil level (and coolant level for those that have it), pack a blanket, a nice bottle of wine, the main squeeze, and find a destination. If you haven’t driven your Porsche for a while, I would encourage you to look at the belts and investigate any unusual fluid spots on the garage floor. Porsche builds a wonderfully reliable car and when properly serviced, failures that would leave one stranded on the side of the road are rare indeed. I have my own personal list of things to inspect or address before I head out on a road trip. I have just added another item to the list! With the introduction of the 964 in 1990 and 993 in 1995, Porsche changed the shift linkage for the G50 transmission. The new linkage made a world of difference in the ease of gear changing. As part of the linkage, a shift lever stabilizing rod with a nylon ball socket on either end attaches to a ball on

26

the bottom of the shift lever and on a bracket mounted forward in the tunnel. This past week, I have replaced the stabilizing rod on three cars. As the nylon ages, it becomes brittle and less resilient. The rod is mounted directly to the bottom of the linkage so if a ball socket fails (see attached photo) the rod falls to the bottom of the tunnel and changing gears is no longer possible. The transmission will be in whatever gear was last selected. The shift lever has the feel of a spoon stirring soup. This failure is one of those that absolutely will leave you stranded. Accessing the stabilizing rod requires removing the tunnel closing panel (on the very bottom of the car and has 30 10mm bolts). Replacing the rod takes less than an hour and the rod itself (it comes in two parts) costs around $230. There is not a recommended replacement interval for the rod, but compared to the expense of a having to call a tow truck and the inconvenience factor (envision this happening on some winding road in Arkansas on a Saturday night) the replacement of the rod every ten years or so would seem a bargain.

All original minus the stereo and tires. A factory whale tail has been added by a previous owner and the factory deck lid comes with the car. I have a 3-ring binder with the service history detailed by month and year. I’m the 4th owner and the 3rd owner owned the car from 1995-2011. The car has had paint work done on the driver’s side as the result of being keyed. To my knowledge, the car has never been in an accident and has a clean car fax. The odometer/speedometer stopped working twice during the life of the car and both times it was removed by the Porsche dealer and sent for factory repair. This caused a mileage note on carfax, but the mileage is accurate per the history of the car, inspections, dealer services and the title statement by the previous owner. Receipts for the service are in the file. The car has just undergone an extensive cosmetic freshening and is in great mechanical condition. The engine doesn’t leak a drop of oil and the recent updates are listed below. $20,500 Chris- 214-354-9220 (2) For Sale: 1978 Porsche 928 Euro, Cockney Brown, Black leather / Tan cloth insert interior, No Sunroof (rare) & No side “Rub strips” (rare), 5 speed manual Transmission, S wheels & original phone dials, Current odometer reading is 14,883 miles ( Estimated 65,883 miles ), Immaculately maintained, Headlight “Dip” Switch (currently disabled), 2008 Dallas Autorama Outstanding in Class Award, $9,500 or trade for TDI Mike 972-786-3978 cell.
