What does it mean to be a lead Porsche service department? In our service department, we have always strived to be the best. In 2005, Porsche came to us and asked us to start sending in reports to a group of engineers and tasked us with looking for any area of vehicle development that could be improved. We are currently 1 of 18 dealers in North America that they have chosen to ask for this help. It is an honor we simply accepted. Since that time we have strived to always report accurately and have received great feedback from engineering. Our feedback to Porsche has given us an opportunity to be at the doorstep of their leading edge technology. We were chosen by Porsche to take on the task of spending our time examining our repairs then forwarding exactly what we saw, how we diagnosed it and how we resolved it. It is an honor to be recognized by one of the foremost automotive engineering companies on the planet in this way. When you bring your Porsche in to us it will be examined in a very special way. It is what we were doing before Porsche asked us for our help in improving their cars. Now we simply record and pass on what we do.

Proven performance in the workshop or at the track. It is our passion.

Drifting: Fifty Years Young By John Hamilton, Region President

Y

up - your Maverick Region is just 50 years young this year, with the actual anniversary date falling on December 24. We’ve had a great 50th year so far, with our “50 Cars for 50 Years” celebration at TMS, and our upcoming Holiday and Founders’ Day celebrations. This year’s Founders’ Day (Saturday, December 1 - mark your calendar now) will be particularly meaningful, since it’s when we celebrate the founding of our club back in 1962! To add to that celebration, we have two nationally known guests attending and participating: • Master of Ceremonies: Mark Shevitz, who continues to be the emcee for the national Porsche Parades, and is the president of SJI Inc. in St. Louis, which specializes in managing promotional events. A professional speaker and business consultant, Mark is also a great friend of the Maverick Region. • Keynote Speaker: David Hobbs, who has a vast 30-year history of international driving experience at all levels of motor sports, including sports cars, touring cars, Indy cars, IMSA, Can-Am, and Formula One. He has participated in the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Daytona. He made twenty starts in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, finishing in 8th place at the first attempt in 1962, following with a pole position and a best finish of third (in 1969 and 1984) to his credit. In 1971 Hobbs won the U.S. Formula 5000 L&M Continental Series championship, driving for Carl Hogan out of St. Louis, Missouri, in a McLaren M10B-Chevrolet. He 2

won five of the eight rounds that year at Laguna Seca, Seattle, Road America (Elkhart Lake), Edmonton and Lime Rock. Twelve years later, he would claim the 1983 Trans-Am Series championship as well. He also made two NASCAR Winston Cup starts in 1976, including leading two laps at the 1976 Daytona 500, and drove a race in the 1979 International Race of Champions. Today, David Hobbs provides commentary for Formula One and GP2 races on the Speed Channel (alongside Bob Varsha and former Benetton engineer Steve Matchett), the SCCA Valvoline runoffs, and parts of the 24 Hours of Daytona. He has also worked for CBS on its Daytona 500 coverage, working as both a color commentator and a feature/ pit reporter from 1979 until 1996. So mark your calendar now for December 1, and watch for the announcement when we open registration to attend our 50th Anniversary Founders’ Day celebration!

Mav of the Month Some people wait to be told to do something. Others see something that needs to be done, and just go do it! This month’s Mav of the Month comes from the second group. As a regular participant and helper for our Autocross and Time Trial events, Travis Howard has spent

many hours operating our equipment vehicle, lovingly known as “The Truxster.” This vehicle has been through a lot over the years, without much attention to maintenance and upkeep. So last month, Travis got together several of the people who normally work the events, and together they repaired and performed necessary maintenance on it. New oil, brake fluid, back doors: they did it all and more. So thank you, Travis, for taking the lead on getting the old Truxster back in shape. Enjoy your well-deserved gift card to the Silver Fox Steakhouse!

ometimes things don’t get as much publicity as they should. Other things get much more publicity than they deserve, but I am going to concentrate on the former category this time. For instance, Maverick Region’s annual Swap Meet, which has been held at Zim’s Autotechnik every October for the last few years, just sort of crept up on us. Scheduled for Saturday, Oct 13 this year, it has been on both the on-line and Page 1 calendars for several months, but until now, it has really not been talked about much. It is a very popular event, both for buyers looking for that special part at a very special price, and for

sellers who finally have a chance to unburden themselves of a few items taking up needed space in their garage, living room, closet, kitchen, or other inconvenient location. It only lasts 4 hours, so get there early before the good stuff is gone! Another event, and one that just showed up on the calendar, is a Tech Session called “Where Have All the Electrons Gone?” about automotive electrical system troubleshooting and diagnosis. Our own Tech Session Chair, Ed Mullenix, will be hosting this Tech Session on Saturday, Oct 20 at 9:00am. Ed will be hosting it at his shop, Mullenix Motorsport Engineering, located at 610 S. Sherman St. in Richardson. See our on-line calendar at http:// mav.pca.org for more details. And something else which has been almost totally unpublicized,

not an event this time but more of a monthly feature, is located on the PCA national website. Just go to www.pca.org, then click on the Panorama link, followed by the Panorama Photo/Video Gallery link. There you will find photo galleries that outgoing Panorama editor Betty Jo Turner and husband/photographer Leonard Turner have been putting together every month since September 2008. Just choose a year and month, then click on one of the “orbiting” photos to get a description of it. Chances are good that you will find something interesting that you perhaps didn’t know about, so spend a few minutes and check out some little-known photos that you just might recognize . . . Read on!

Maverick Minutes By Gareth Maurice, Guest Scribe Editor’s Note - once again, Gareth Maurice has stepped up to fill in for Secretary Madhu Rao.

N

either snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these attendees from the swift completion of their Not Gareth Maurice Board Meeting! However, with a high of 103 degrees and the season opener between the Cowboys and the Giants occurring at the same time, it was touch and go. We kicked off the September Board Meeting at 7:16pm and proceeded for the next two hours. Despite the Cowboys game, we were still nineteen strong around the table. Mike Stafford joined us, attending his second Board Meeting ever. Of course, with eight years since his last meeting, we do not expect to see him again until around 2020. Also, why the sixteen minute delay in beginning, you may ask? Well between us, Linda Bambina, PR and Member Relations, just turned sixty-five and treated herself to a Mediterranean cruise with her best friend whom she met in elementary school. Happy Birthday Linda! Region President John Hamilton kicked off the meeting with some great news. The Region recently gained seventeen new members and we are now 2,177 strong. Keep sharing your copies of Slipstream and Panorama with other Porsche owners. Carry them with you in your car, as they are great ice-breakers when meeting other Porsche owners. The sheer number of events that the Region puts on became the main topic of conversation 8

September 5, 2012 for the meeting. Because there are so many events and activities, be sure to check the Events page at the Maverick Region PCA website (http://mav.pca.org). Lori Mauthe, DE Chair, reminded everyone that these events often raise money for charity and are just a great way to meet people that have the same interests as we have. Christy Payne, Social Chair, has eighty-seven Raffle tickets left for the 50th Anniversary Germany Vacation. At $50 per ticket, with a portion going to our charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, these last few tickets will go quickly. This really is an incredible trip for the couple that wins. Please contact Christy with how many you want! Here are but a few of our upcoming events, also listed on the MRPCA website Events page: • Sept 29 – Grapes to Wine Saturday Drive. This is a combination Tour and Rally, starting at The Village Shopping Center in Allen and ending up at Grapes to Wine in Bartonville. Sunday Drivemeister John Harvey will be leading the Tour, and semi-retired Rallymeister Carey Spreen will be leading the Hare and Hound Rally to the same destination via a different route. Social Chair Christy Payne and John have organized Wine Tastings and an Italian dinner to be held especially for Tour and Rally participants. The dinner and tasting will require an additional fee, as will the Rally, but will be a great way to relax and enjoy the weekend! • Oct 20 – Tech Session: Electrical system maintenance at Mullenix Motorsport Engineering. See details elsewhere in this issue. • Oct 21 – Sunday Drive. “Teaser alert” – this one will get you

out of the doghouse, gentlemen. Set this date aside as you’ll want to take your spouse on this drive. (Details to follow.) • Nov 4 – Holiday Party. This year our traditional event becomes a Thanksgiving-themed party. • Dec 1 – 50th Anniversary Founder’s Day Gala. This will be held in the Grand Ballroom at Texas Motor Speedway, and will feature keynote speaker David Hobbs of the SPEED Channel. • Dec 2 – Charity Autocross at Texas Motor Speedway. David Hobbs will be attending this too. Next month we will no doubt report how successful the DE at MotorSport Ranch was over the September 15-16th weekend. As of this Board Meeting there were already over one hundred and thirty registered participants. Also, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program was already at its limit of twenty children for the weekend. The event is so popular and appreciated by the program that they have a waiting list of children trying to attend. Please do not forget to sign up for the Charity laps at these events and take a child for the ride of his/her life. We will videotape the parade laps with the children and provide all of the kids with a copy of their track time. 2013 Planned DE Dates: • March 9-10 -- Eagles Canyon Raceway (ECR) • April 20-12 -- MotorSport Ranch (MSR) 3.1 mile course • June 1 -- ECR • Sept 21-22 -- MSR, 1.7 mile, counterclockwise • Oct 26-27 -- Texas Showdown PCA Club Race at ECR • Nov 9 -- MSR, 1.7 mile, clockwise

drives follow a viable route without hazards as forty to fifty Porsches navigate the back roads of the Maverick Region; and the upkeep of all equipment we rely on.

The Nominating Committee is currently addressing two open positions: Vice-President and Secretary. If you are interested, please reach out to Lori Mauthe, Bruce McQuaid or Luke Edson at the numbers listed on page 3 of this issue. Autocross Chair Al Silva and Time Trial Chair Travis Howard reminded everyone that we have several events planned over the next few months: • Time Trial: Sept 29 and Dec 8 at Mineral Wells, and Oct 14 at MotorSport Ranch, on the 1.3-mile course • Autocross: Sept 30 and Dec 9 at Mineral Wells What I learned about and appreciated is the tireless effort that goes into supporting all of these events. The last minute proof-reading of next month’s Slipstream in the

parking lot of the publisher; the registration of all the necessary forms to ensure the events are safe and fun; the pre-drives that must occur to ensure the Sunday

Everyone who has attended an Autocross or Time Trial has seen “The Truxster.” This pre-Industrial Revolution van houses all of the equipment for these events and was recently given an overhaul by Travis and Robyn Howard and Clay and Betty Perrine. They spent a full weekend building and replacing panels and applying new paint. Spoken as a true, proud papa, he said, “It now looks great…from fifteen feet away.” Thank you for your dedication! aving joined the Maverick family in ’81, Alan and I became a very active couple almost immediately. There were a number of couples who lived and breathed Maverick back then in the 80s and early 90s: the Davises, Gibbs, Usserys, Mayos, Suttons, Blakewells, Breihaupts, Knights, Hammills, Nannises, Underwoods, and of course, Brian Scudder and Lanean Hughes. I began to back out of helping and planning and devoting weekend after weekend to Maverick events in the late 90s when I went back to school to get another degree while still working full time. It was about that same time that another couple joined with their nine-monthold daughter and their first 911 that had a “big enough back seat for a baby seat, but was something that could successfully autocross.”

Enter the Usserys, who put the Dugan’s green 914 on THEIR trailer. That, of course, left the Ussery’s 914 needing transport. It was the only street legal car that was involved. At that point, Nancy Dugan graciously offered to drive it back. All this for a couple they barely knew. We were very grateful.” Well, James and Wendy, WE are very grateful that you both have

To review: A year after joining, Wendy and James became Slipstream Editors when Brian Scudder was President and Lanean was “bending arms.” (Just ask Wendy about the “Margarita Story.”) Wendy continued as Editor when Charlie Davis returned to the office of President after 25 years. Charlie prophetically chose Wendy as the Selcer Award Recipient after only two years in the club. Little did any of us know… this was just the beginning. (Oh, really?) But wait! There’s more! The Turbo-Twosome are BOTH competitive and incredibly skillful inside their 911s (they’ve had four),

winning top honors at the 2007 Parade in Rally Unequipped and countless other trophies in all competitive events. (And not to be outdone, daughter Jasmine has trophied in the Art Show!) Then Wendy went on to a never-been-donebefore “three-peat” (’09,’10,’11) with Ladies’ Top Time in the Autocross, against hundreds of the best drivers in PCA. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the BEST part about them. . . as a couple, as individuals . . . they are interesting, clever, generous, funny and fun folks. I’m thankful they’re part of our Maverick Friendship Family.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: What a Week! By Cliff Blackshear

I

t’s Club Race time for the Mavs. And DE time, and well, you get the picture. Oh wait, this goes on year round. What is it about fall that seems to really get everyone wound up hard? Must be the weather. I just came off a week that seemed to have end-to-end heart attack events. Monday through Wednesday was training with Porsche and a “hands on” Gold Meister test in Atlanta. I tried to make light of the testing when talking with people, but honestly? The anticipation of it was nerve wracking. Turned out it was 4 hours of time allotted to find three specific problems bugged into cars. How we approached the car with protective covers, how we logged and recorded our testing and test results were all watched and scored. It is strange working

in an environment like that. I do not like that kind of pressure. Passed the test and two hours later was on my way to Mid Ohio Raceway. Michael Hsu, Thomas Jones, Bernard Neusbaumer, and Billy Stevens were there in their Spec Boxsters along with Paul Alexander from Shenandoah Region in Virginia. Initially we thought the turnout for this NASA Championship event would have many Spec Box cars. Did not happen. Nonetheless it was serious fun. Bernard has nicknamed Thomas “The Emperor,” as he has been seriously quick this year. Seat time, dedication, and attention to detail have been his mantra. It shows in his performance at the track. Bernard was having tire issues when I got there but the Topp guys seemed to have gotten that corrected. He was rock solid after that and dogged Michael then Paul all weekend.

Michael was also having tire issues. He had a set disappear during the event. Kinda weird and he blames himself. It is a long story. He left them at the mounting shop, returned to get them after a long period of time and they were gone. No other sets he had were working as well. Friday his car was all over the place. Plus he had not had any seat time in the car for somewhere near a year. “I know yer quicker than that Michael, as you do.” Sunday he went with his best tires. Billy also had not been in his Spec for a year. He had been concentrating on his Cup Car and many different events. His Spec just refused to stop oversteering. It appears that his shocks were not responding to adjustments. Yet he took what the car gave him and got what he could out of it. Hallett is in three weeks, and Billy has committed to doing it. Shocks will be addressed, some sorting time will have been spent, and he will be back with a serious attitude to do well I’m betting. Paul had a terrible weekend. He showed so much speed and an ability to run up front. He had an off on Friday and the car was never right after that. Topp guys aligned and then after a couple sessions the camber and toe on right front were off again. Like Billy he got everything out of the car he could and was actually very quick. But he was working hard to manage the car and the right front tire was wearing incorrectly. Plus at one point he got a call that his wife had been admitted to the ER. He immediately loaded his car and was about to head out when she called and said “I’m OK - finish what ya started”. A true Porschephile couple eh?

continued from page 12 Thomas was on fire at the event. 1.5 to 2.5 seconds faster than everyone else. His car was working flawlessly. For him it all came down to tire management and patience. The run group was 944 Spec, SpecE30, Spec3, and Spec 986. The 986 was clearly the fastest of the group. Midway into sprints, Thomas was all over the E30 BMW cars and lapping them. All other Spec Box guys were also having to sort through them. It was interesting to watch and required great patience to get by them. In the 45-minute Enduro it got really interesting. Paul was holding off Bernard for second place. Billy was right there looking for an opportunity. Michael was struggling with a car that just needed more grip. Billy could not overcome his car’s issues enough and it became Bernard nibbling at Paul’s brake

14

fifth. Then with a couple laps to go Paul’s engine let go coming out of Turn 2. He coasted over and got well off track so as to not create a yellow flag situation. Unbelievable. We all felt so bad for him.

The view from one of Mid-Ohio Raceway’s observation mounds lights, while Paul mandated the car around the track. Thomas just left everyone behind. While most were working hard to get into 1:40 range times Thomas was turning consistent mid to upper 1:39s. With a couple laps to go, Thomas was nearly 30 seconds ahead of the Specs and was overall leader. Paul was second overall with Bernard in third, Billy fourth and Michael

Thomas 1st, Bernard 2nd, Billy 3rd, Michael 4th. So the Maverick Porsche guys showed up for the first NASA national Spec Box event and took all the podium spots . . . what a weekend! Now Hallett is in everyone’s sights and then MSR (Maverick event on Oct 27 and 28). DE coming weekend Sept 15 and 16 will have happened. Plus more events I have no space to go on about here. I need to get back into workshop mode. Gold Meister test is over. As Porsche integrates all their outlets around the world into one global family I have passed my challenge and am happy to be done with it. Cheers!

Advertiser of the Month: Boardwalk Porsche By Linda Bambina, PR Chair

B

oardwalk Porsche has been a good friend and supporter of the Maverick Region for thirteen years running. They have supported Maverick Region as a sponsor and advertiser and also have provided raffle items for our charity auctions throughout the years. For the last twelve years Boardwalk has been the Premier Sponsor of our PCA National Club Race. This year the Club Race is October 27-28 at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. Boardwalk’s service department supports a number of Maverick Region racers and Drivers’ Education participants. Many Mavericks have their track cars maintained by Boardwalk, and it’s not uncommon to show up on any particular day and see a Maverick or two in the showroom, parts dept., or service area. Cliff Blackshear (Slipstream’s “Cliff’s Ramblings” author) is much more than Boardwalk’s Shop Foreman, as those of you who regularly read his column know! What’s more, our own Frank Briggs has figured out a way to combine work and play in a most unique way at Boardwalk! Many of you also know John Gladwill, a Master Porsche Technician in the Service Department at Boardwalk. He will also be racing the Boardwalk-built-and-sponsored “Spec Boxster” at October’s Club Race. But Boardwalk is much more than just a sponsor for our track events. As Client Relations Director Nicole Clarke writes, “The philosophy behind Boardwalk Porsche was simply to create a friendly, excellent 16

experience while representing one of the most respected and prestigious names in the automotive industry. What has developed is the Boardwalk Porsche Family.” That concept of family is truly the feeling that I got when I entered the showroom and offices of Nicole and GM Mike Marsh. I also noted a number of significant quotes from Ferdinand Porsche and other Porsche family members all around the dealership that echoed that same focus on having an excellent experience in relationship to the car. They know that a Porsche is very different from any other vehicle you’ll ever drive. They want your experience at Boardwalk Porsche to be unlike that of

any other dealership you’ll ever visit. They work hard to do some special things for their customers, past, present, and future. “Throughout the year, Boardwalk hosts many events, from our Owner’s Rallies on some of North Texas best back roads, to a handful of Launches in celebration of the ever-evolving Porsche, to the Annual Client Appreciation Events and the Hot Summer Nights Car Shows. Boardwalk Porsche is proud to sponsor many community charities throughout the year, striving to make every event mean a little something extra,” explains Nicole.

She told me “Boardwalk isn’t out only to sell and service cars. There is a way of life, a community and culture that is represented through every experience clients have when they come through the door, whether it’s to visit their favorite Parts Specialist, see what the newest release is, or talk racing with John Gladwill. Boardwalk exists to enhance and enrich the community that Porsche creates.” The man driving this philosophy is General Manager, Mike Marsh. Joining Boardwalk Porsche in late 2009, Mike has amassed some three decades worth of knowledge and experience working with German cars. Most of that skill-set has been earned with the Porsche marque. A native of Amarillo, Texas, Mike operates under a simple proviso: provide an easy, streamlined, and ultimately enjoyable experience for each client. To execute this, he leads a high-performance sales, management and technical team. “It’s the best I’ve seen,” he says. “They take absolute pride in this dealership. That’s remarkably uncommon. There is something special going on here.” I encourage you to take a peek at their unusual webpage if you haven’t checked it out already. Besides some links to help you “Build Your Porsche”, “Compare Models,” and even a link to Estimate Payments, there are Photo Gallery Pages, their Porsche Blog, and pages of Porsche Posts as well as personal Reviews galore. I’ll post one more right here: Boardwalk Porsche, you and your people are phenomenal. Thank you for being a part of our Maverick Family for all these years.

Tech Corner: Guardian Angel, Karma, or Just Lucky? By Ed Mullenix, Tech Session Chair

T

his past May, our beloved club Treasurer brought his 968 to the shop to have a noisy strut replaced and servicing done prior to the June D.E. I wound up replacing both struts because they had lost their fluid and no longer damped the suspension. The 968 had a little over 100k miles so we changed the transmission filter and fluid (Jim’s car has a Tiptronic), front brake pads, an oil change and a D.E. inspection. Everything looked good.

of pulleys and timing belts with their attendant bent valves, damaged cylinder heads, or worse. Jim had had the timing belt and water pump replaced about 40k miles earlier. Typically the water pumps and belts and such last much longer than that. “Stuff happens”! What didn’t happen was a broken timing belt. During the test drive I drove Jim’s car an extra two miles to a parts store and back to the shop. Had I not, Jim would have picked up the 968 and headed back to his office on I-75. It would have “died” at about the Campbell Road exit. The extra repairs caused Jim to miss the D.E.

The 944/968 variants tend to be a little “noisy” in the engine bay because of the timing and balance shaft belts whirring around, the alternators whistling a little, and the power steering pumps whining. Jim’s 968 emitted the usual noises but a little louder than normal. I took the car out for a test drive. The new struts really improved the feel on corners and everything worked as advertised.

In an earlier column I listed the trials and tribulations of another 968 owner with a Tiptronic transmission. Well, in August Jim’s guardian angel had taken the day off. The rubber drive plate on his car sheared. When the rubber on the drive plate shears (see photo), the steel travel stops on the plate and flywheel bang together.

The noise is similar to an engine connecting rod trying to escape the confines of the engine. The drive plate is mounted in the same place as a clutch pressure plate and connects the engine to the driveshaft like a conventional clutch. The “Tips” and the manual transmission cars use the same drive tube and bell housing. The “Tip” cars even have a pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft that never spins but only centers the drive shaft. The drive plate on Jim’s 968 is 20 years old and had 110k miles on it. Considering that the working part of the plate is made of rubber, I suppose that’s not too bad. The drive plate is $1200, and if the thing wasn’t so difficult to get out, I would experiment with replacing it with a manual trans. flywheel and clutch. The clutch disc would never wear out because it would always be engaged. Maybe I’ll work on that when I retire.

I brought the car back into the shop to wipe the “paw prints” off the fenders. I was cleaning my hands when I heard the 968 suddenly get quieter. I turned to look and saw smoke coming out of the timing belt shroud. I ran and shut off the engine. After removing the upper section of belt shroud, I discovered that the water pump bearing had seized and the belt was sliding on the pump pulley rather than turning it. The friction quickly overheated the belt and it was probably seconds away from breaking. I mentioned in a previous column about the catastrophic failure

We Owe It to Our Cars! By Ash Seidl-Staley

W

hen I was brought into this world, my grandparents dressed me in a shirt that read “My first car will be a Porsche,” and it was. It was a Fisher Price toddler buggy with a large Porsche decal stuck to the front of it, but to me that still counts. Since then I have lived and breathed Porsche. My youth was filled with dreams of driving each year’s new 911, and the loving memories of my grandfather working on his 914/6, 928 and 911/935 projects. In April of 2011 the time finally came when I could buy my own Porsche. A quick search on Craigslist led me to my Guards Red 1987 944. I was warned by my family that an early Porsche would require a lot of time and money, and man were they right! Since the steal of a deal, I have had to replace numerous parts, some of which included a fly wheel sensor, the entire rear axle assembly,

22

practically all the interior, water pump/belts, and a brake package.

ing the more expensive performance pad was the right choice.

That last item is very important and is the stem from which this article flowers. Living with older Porsches, we owners are bombarded with upgrade kits and OEM parts, but which parts are right for our cars? I was faced with this dilemma when looking to replace the brake package. I do not make ungodly amounts of money; if I did I would be driving a GT3 RSR, so my choices are not only limited to available parts but to ones that are financially feasible.

A month or so back, we had a typical Texas afternoon rainstorm. With the unexpected rain, as many of us know, the roads become full of “terrible drivers.” I was driving home from work turning left on K Avenue from Spring Creek when directly in front of me a Lexus swerved out of his lane across mine and crashed into the median. Startled, I applied my breaks in a pumping motion but was still fish tailing thanks to the wet pavement. Holding the slide, and missing a collision with the car in the lane next to me, I skidded to a halt. I went from 0-45 to 45-0 in a matter of 15 seconds with only an inch to spare!

After weeks of searching, I ended up going with a standard set of Sebro Vented brake discs and a rebuild kit for each of my calipers. It’s weird to say, but I was stumped on what pads to get since every discussion board and magazine I saw endorsed different products. After searching a little while longer I was left with a decision to get either cheap AC Delco pads from AutoZone, or save one more paycheck to spring for some EBC Yellowstuff 4000s. I cannot express how choos-

Owning a Porsche has changed my life; I can’t imagine not having one. So from one multiple Porsche owner to the next, I ask you to always give your car the quality parts it deserves. You never know when those parts will save not only your life but your car’s as well.

Matt shared a funny story about his wife driving his car. “Penny has never liked driving my cars. I think she did not want to be responsible for anything that might go wrong, but one day I had to beg her to drive it to the dealer for service because I was not able to do it myself. She finally gave in and said ‘Yes.’ I told her it was just a car and to have fun with it.

er? And how does the spoiler come up?’ Penny was having a BLAST driving the car! I guess I will have to buy her a Panamera this fall.” Look for Matt and his wife Penny at the track or next PCA event you attend and extend a warm welcome into our Maverick family. T

he location for the August Happy Hour turned out to be ideal. We started the evening in a private room just inside the door of the Fox & Hound in Lewisville. Shortly after I arrived, I was visiting with the manager, who offered to cone off part of the parking lot so we could line up all of the cars— next time, just call in advance. It is always impressive to see a line-up of Porsches in any location, and it just facilitates the discussions that occur at every Happy Hour: talk of our prized possessions. After an hour or so of visiting, people moved into the dining room for dinner and to continue the various conversations amongst the groups. Maverick Happy Hours always include a variety of interesting people, from new members, to regular attendees, to a couple who split their time between Texas and California. One of the first couples I had the opportunity to visit with were Squire and Nancy Manar. Squire recently purchased a 1986 944, and they joined the club just 2 weeks ago (Squire can’t wait for his

Photos by Linda Bambina first issue of Slipstream). He owned a 944 25 years ago and has always wanted another one. Both Squire and Nancy worked in real estate for many years. Squire is now retired and Nancy is working towards retirement as quickly as she can. Chris and Ann Christensen also made a guest appearance. Chris was the Social Chairman responsible for organizing the Happy Hours for many years until he finally had to give it up. He and Ann now split their time between homes in Texas and California. It was a nice surprise for many in attendance to see the Christensens present, and lots of time was spent reminiscing about past activities.

loaded into the car and delivered to the Post Office in north Fort Worth, to be mailed out to all of the members. Today, it is obviously a much more automated process and the end result is a publication that is recognized for its excellence by the national PCA organization. Linda has been very active in the club for many years, and my respect for those people who continuously contribute their time and effort into the club is tremendous. Another very interesting story was told by Ash Staley. He came to the Happy Hour in his grandfather’s Germany Region shirt. It turns out that his grandfather was the President of that Region of PCA, and the Porsche spirit definitely runs through Ash’s blood. He is currently working on two Porsches: a 944, and a 911 that he wants to convert into a 935. Ash is an aspiring writer and would like to begin contributing to Slipstream as a columnist. And as it turns out, his first contribution is in this issue!

Warren Bischoff and Ann Christensen Speaking of past activities, I had the opportunity to visit with Linda Bambina as she regaled me with stories of the early days of publishing Slipstream. Back then, it was a completely manual process; they laid out each issue by hand and the first issues were printed at Ussery Printing, where it is still printed today. With the assistance of many volunteers, they had to staple the issues together by hand, apply the labels, and then they had to sort all of the issues by zip code. The issues then had to be rubber-banded together by zip code (very specifically per Post Office rules) before they were

visit to the Happy Hour scene. Also there were grandfather George Luxbacher and his grandson Drew Abel. I never did find out if Drew has permission to drive his grandfather’s car. It is phenomenal when you can pass the passion on to other generations. I know my daughter, who is a senior in high

Our passions are revealed in many different ways, notably Don Gary and Squire debating which Porsche model is better, the 944 or the 924 Turbo. I wonder who won that debate? Don, who owns a ’91 924 Turbo, was crushed to find out there were no 924s present in the 50th
