Drifting: To Plate or Not to Plate -- That is the Question! By John Hamilton, Region President

T

he changes in Texas law effective September 1 reinstated a fine for not having a front license plate. One of our long-term members, Milton Barley, did some extensive research on the subject and sent around his findings: “1) Over a year ago, HB2357 was passed, which was an attempt to streamline and clarify a number of points in the motor vehicle registration and licensing laws, and it “inadvertently” omitted the provision for a fine for not having license plate(s) on a vehicle. The net result was that there was a law with no penalty, and almost all jurisdictions stopped trying to write tickets on it. Technically, no front plate was still a ‘probable cause’ for a traffic stop, and that was your greatest risk. “2) Last year, HB 657 was introduced, to change the law to require only one plate in the rear, and that bill died in committee, due mainly to opposition by law enforcement. Their latest opposition is partially based on new camera/software technology which allows them to randomly scan plates, looking for outstanding wants and warrants. “3) Last year, HB 625 was introduced and passed, which adds back the provision for a fine of up to $200 for driving a vehicle without current license plate(s). This bill became effective September 1, 2013. “In summary, it appears that we go back to the way it was in 2012 and earlier, and it will be up to the local jurisdictions to determine what level of enforcement takes place. We are, in my opinion, left to the tender mercies and attitude of the officer who stops you, and then, how you present yourself (courteous and friendly goes a long way, I think). I also believe that if you are driving a Porsche, it is probably best to not use some story about not being able to find a bracket or ‘the dealer said I didn’t need one.’ Most of them have heard that line and don’t like to hear it again.” Thank you, Milton, for your research, insight, and recommendations. By the way, it should also be noted that there has been a Texas court case that ruled that having your license plate in the front windshield does not meet the intent of the law, and that your plate must be attached to the front of the vehicle. 2 October

ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 So the final decision is left up to you, the Porsche owner. Were you stopped before September, 2012 when the fine was still in place? Do you think having the fine back will increase the likelihood of being stopped now? There is no perfect answer, but it’s up to you!

Mav of the Month As some of you may have heard, our Drivers’ Education Chair, Lori Mauthe, has relocated to a different part of the country due to employment. Thus, we started running an ad in Slipstream for a new DE Chair. Well, one day this summer, in walks Maverick member Chris Tabor and says he’s interested. After an in-depth investigation of the job and its responsibilities, Chris accepted the position. So a huge thank-you to Chris and all the great Maverick volunteers who step-up when help is needed. And to Chris, as a token of our appreciation, enjoy your Gift Certificate to the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine!

ur Fall season is now in full swing, with several events scheduled for October -- how many can you attend? Saturday, Oct 5 is our Cars & Cattle Poker Rally and Concours d’Non-Elegance (see ad below for details). Wondering what the heck that is? A Poker Run is a type of rally in which participants stop at various locations along the route and pick up a playing card. At the end of the route, whoever has the best poker hand wins. As for the Concours d’Non-Elegance -- well, it’s a car show at a working cattle ranch. ‘Nuf said? Sunday the 6th is our annual Time Trial held at MotorSport Ranch. If

you haven’t registered by the time you read this, it’s probably too late! The next weekend consists of our annual Swap Meet on Saturday the 12th, again hosted by Zim’s Autotechnik in Bedford. Got a part you no longer need, or are you looking for a used part for the right price? The Swap Meet is great for both. Sunday the 13th is a redux of the very popular Sunday Drive to the San Martiño Winery in Rockwall that was held in 2011. John Harvey’s Sunday Drive crew has chosen a route that they know you will enjoy, to be followed by a picnic lunch (which you bring with you); the winery asks that you purchase a bottle of wine, as there are no outside beverages allowed. They also offer wine tastings at $8 for five samples. The weekend of Oct 26-27 is when Maverick Region hosts its PCA Club

Race and DE at Eagles Canyon Raceway. If you have never attended a Club Race and are interested in finding out more about it, come on out to Eagles Canyon, north of Decatur, to see what it’s all about. We can always use volunteers as well, so if you feel like contributing your time and seeing what goes on behind the scenes, contact Wendy Shoffit at crreg@mavpca.org to see what positions need filling. Finally, our annual Founders’ Day banquet will be held this year on Saturday, Nov 2 -- see the ad on page 17 for details. This year’s event, our 51st, will be a return to normal for us after last year’s big 50th Anniversary blowout, but it will be a fitting look back at the year nonetheless. Read on!

Maverick Minutes: September Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary

R

egion President John Hamilton began the meeting at 7:03pm by welcoming new and visiting Maverick Members Jim and Linda Curzan, as well as our incoming DE chair Chris Tabor, praising the club for how well we function in general as an organization. Former Social Chair Christy Payne sat in on the meeting as well, as she is assisting current Social Chair Tracy Robertson with several upcoming events. Also, because Vice President Gareth Maurice was unable to attend, John gave Gareth’s report, requesting up to $400 for a graphics package to be used to create Slipstream event promotional ads. After some discussion regarding version and necessity, this was approved. Flowers were purchased and a $100 donation request was made for Hope Shelter, on behalf of longtime contributor Maverick Ed Mayo at the passing of his mother. Approved. The 2014 Nomination Committee announcement was supposed have been ready for publication earlier this year; however, all elected board members are re-running for 2014. John is sending an email to the Region membership to serve as notice that the Executive Council offices are open for nomination. Thank you to John Harvey, Travis Howard, and Carey Spreen, who volunteered to serve as the nominating committee. More specific information is available on page 14. Tracy Robertson said the social calendar is all lined up through January 2014. Cars and Cattle is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 6 October

for which Tourmeister John Harvey kindly mapped a great route. The event includes a poker run, prizes, and Concours. Should be a fun photo op. Christy Payne is helping with our annual Founders’ Day event, which will be held Saturday, November 2 at the NYLO hotel in Las Colinas. She asked board members to help get donations lined up for a really great auction! Think holiday! She will send a reminder to everyone to be reaching out for donations. Chris Tabor volunteered to donate a fancy car wash from one of his “Shine” facilities over near Fort Worth. Thank you, Chris! Our charity, the Huffaker Hughes Hope House is the beneficiary of the Silent Auction, and their annual holiday party is planned for Saturday, December 21 from noon to 2pm. As a reminder, the raffle tickets for the one-year lease on a Porsche Macan are available for purchase from board members at various events for $50 each, as well as through a link on the mavpca. org home page. Anyone can purchase these tickets; sales are not limited to PCA members only. Next up was Slipstream Editor Carey Spreen, who highlighted an opportunity for folks to participate in an SCCA “Rally Master” school, on September 21. He also expressed support on behalf of several folks who would like for Don Sebert to bring his many years of experience to chair the Maverick Rally program. Region Treasurer Jim Falgout gave his report next by saying we are in good fiscal health; the DE tracks are paid for, and we are due about $8,500 from our advertisers. New Driver Education Chair Chris Tabor appreciated the warm

September 4, 2013

welcome, and that he was looking forward to participating with the Mavericks in this way. He said his group is ready to go for the September 21-22 DE at MotorSport Ranch; had some general operational questions for discussion; will meet with Lori Mauthe for additional transitional info; and made a suggestion to consider breaking up the Blue and Green run groups into faster and slower sub-groups for increased efficiency. Membership Co-Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich began their report by mentioning that our Region continues to grow, now at an all-time high of 2,270 members, including affiliates. They said that we (as chairs and other board members and volunteers) are working to address the non-renewal issues; further discussion ensued at this point, and good ideas were exchanged regarding a solution. Concours Chair Andy Kay chimed in and made a great suggestion: Have we asked our members why they join? I believe our collective interest here is to maintain a highobjective standard of continuing to grow the value provisioning of the club, and facilitate the best interests of the membership. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey was excited to say that there were 31 couples that made the drive from the Metroplex to Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg, which was held September 6-8, with over 200 cars total participating. The San Martiño Ranch drive and wine tasting event is ready to go for Sunday, October 13! Additionally, a Sunday Drive on November 17 to Fort Richardson is in the works, and an event that he is calling the Frick’n Toy Run (in honor of Jean and Dave Frick, whose idea it was for the event) will be on Sunday,

December 8. Please check the Maverick Region website calendar regularly for all event details and updates. Calendar Boy and Sunday Drive Deputy Brendan Eagan said that their event route mapping predrives are available for others to join, if interested. PR chair Linda Bambina asked that someone write an article to cover the Club Race in October, since she and husband Alan will be at the PCA Escape in California that weekend. We look forward to hearing all about it and seeing some great pictures as well! Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix is planning one of his always-informative Tech Sessions for the January time frame; topics tbd. Autocross and Time Trial Chair Travis Howard reported that all is on track with his events. Please check the Maverick Region website for details, and don’t forget to register for the Time Trial at Motorsport Ranch on Sunday, October 6, but note that only entrants with track experience will be accepted. Linda Bambina noted that Bill McBride, our long-time Slipstream back cover advertiser for State Farm, is retiring; Autobahn Porsche has taken over as the full back cover advertiser. Club Race

continued from page 7 Registrar Wendy Shoffit mentioned that she needs volunteers for the Club Race at Eagles Canyon Raceway on October 26-27. Please contact Wendy if you have always wanted to get your feet wet in PCA Club Racing but didn’t know how to get started. We were excited to hear that Andy Kay expressed interest in writing at least one article on the best practices for the wash and detail of your Porsche! Stay tuned! There was some discussion at this point of considering changing the name of our Happy Hours to something else like Dinners or Social Gatherings, so as to make it more obvious that these monthly get-togethers are for more than just drinks, as most attendees stay for dinner afterwards. More brainstorming to come on this, and of course if you, the membership, have any ideas, please let us know! John then did his routinely best Carnac imitation, and awarded Mav of the Month to new DE chair Chris Tabor. Chris, we’re glad you’re aboard and appreciate all your insights, commitment, and support. Meeting adjourned at 8:51pm.

Destination Restoration: Turn of the Page

By Ash Seidl-Staley

M

y 944 troubles of the past few months have really brought me to the point where I truly don’t want to own a water-cooled Porsche EVER again! Obviously, this is an exaggerated statement, but the circumstances of my present situation really do hurt, and bring me to the edge of insanity. It all started to go downhill about two weeks after I had my 944’s cylinder head re-surfaced and belts changed. I was on my way from work, heading to CCCC (aka Collin College) when the timing belt snapped while I was at an Avenue K stop light. After being honked at, flipped off by Plano’s finest, and finally bumper-pushed off the road by a police officer, I was able to begin trying to figure out what my next course of action was going to be. I’m not going to lie; at first, anger poured out of every ounce of my being. I hated everything to do with engines! But I quickly calmed and cooled down as I assessed the damage in a CVS parking lot.

Taking off the nose plate and belt housing plate, I found that the new timing belt was completely shredded and wound up around the balance shaft belt. Upon further inspection I found that the timing belt pulley was crooked and offset as well. This struck me as a little odd, so I reached in and spun it only to find that it wouldn’t turn freely at first, but when it did, it wobbled slightly as it turned. The culprit for the breakdown was found!

Infamous engine murderer!

As I sat on the curb waiting for the tow truck, I couldn’t help but wonder what Porsche was thinking when they designed the 944 2.5L four cylinder as an interference engine. I mean I understand that the counter-rotating balance shafts make the four cylinder engine feel as smooth as a flat six, but how can it be that the only thing keeping the camshaft and valves in time with the crank and pistons are two relatively cheap rubber belts? Doesn’t it bother anyone else to know that the shoddy rubber timing belt is just a ticking time bomb of death, waiting to kill our engines? It seems like a more sturdy chain-tensioned component should have been installed, like on the 911s, but I’m not a concept designer or an engineer so what do I know? Instead of taking the 944 to a shop this time, I began the work myself. I stripped the car down to the long block (again) and sent the cylinder head off to the machine shop (again). Thankfully, only one out of the eight valves bent when the timing belt snapped, so the process of purchasing my replacement parts and gaskets came at a fraction of the shop’s quoted price.

up: the 944 has got to go. I currently have the car up on Craigslist as it sits, and will continue to raise the price as more of the to-do list becomes completed; just waiting for a serious nibble.

With the help of my Uncle, we slowly but surely began putting everything back together. Though I have made it my mission to fix the car and bring it back roaring to life, my mind has been made

I Get Around: Words to Drive By By Dick Badler Editor’s Note: Denver resident Dick Badler writes regularly for outlets that include TFLCar.com, Planet-9.com, and High Gear, the publication of the Rocky Mountain Region of the Porsche Club of America. Over the years, Dick has owned six Porsches. He still has number three, a ’78 911SC, which he bought in 1988.

A

nticipate or Perish. I used these words with my daughters when they were learning to drive. It worked. My daughters survived their teen years behind the wheel, intact. Although I can’t quite say the same thing about the Civic they used, occasionally as a bumper car. There was the incident where the older one, parking her car in front of the garage, said her foot accidentally slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator . . . the car then slammed into the garage door. She called me in the office, and I had the presence of mind to ask if she was all right. I’m very proud of that. Then I called my wife, and asked how the garage door was... and she said there was no garage door. But the girls remember those words, to this day. Which is the point, and which got me thinking about sayings for driving. And, you know what? I couldn’t actually think of many adages at all. Oh, there’s the Stirling Moss’ comment about straightaways: “The boring bits between the corners.” And there’s the 911 mantra: “Slow in, fast out.” There’s also the line attributed to A.J. Foyt about driving at Indy: “If you’re not scaring yourself three times a lap, you’re going 16 October

Courtesy High Gear, the Rocky Mountain Region Newsletter too slow.” Let us not forget, of course, “Speed is a matter of money . . . how fast do you want to go?”

safe harbor, and catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover” -- Mark Twain.

I got an e-mail from the online magazine Winding Road, offering slogan tee shirts, but all they had were “Keep Calm and Carry Speed” and “It’s surprising how many people, including Formula 1 drivers, think the brakes are for slowing the car down,” a quote which is attributed to Mario Andretti.

Or: “We must all suffer from one of two pains; the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is that discipline weighs ounces and lasts a moment while regret weighs tons and lasts a lifetime” -- Jim Rohn

Not exactly inspiring, are they? Which is very ironic, because if you’re a runner, you get inundated with all manner of profundities. One magazine, Runner’s World, actually sends you a “Daily Kick in the Butt” by email. And it’s even more ironic, because many of the lines I see relate to a lot more than running . . . like competing in general . . . and like life. Take this one: “A man can fall many times, but he isn’t a failure until he begins to blame somebody else,” attributed to Steve Prefontaine. And another one from Pre: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” Here’s my favorite from Steve: “A lot of people run a race to see who’s the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts . . . ” In point of fact, the running world picks up these quotes from all sorts of places, and makes them their own. Try this one: “Success is a peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming” -- John Wooden. Or: “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the

Now, understand, I don’t see any of this anywhere in the automotive world, or motorsport world for that matter. I don’t know why. Because when it’s a hot and steamy day, and you’re wearing a multi-layer Nomex driving suit and full-face helmet, and you’re fastened hard into the roll-cage of your car, and you’re pounding around a bullring for an hour and a half, and your pulse is soaring, and you’re manic to get to the checkered flag, first, l don’t care how good your cool suit and your drinking tube are -- it’s the same challenge. Here’s how Patton described it: “Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired. You’ve always got to make the mind take over and keep going.” Ahh, that little voice. When I ran my first half-marathon, I got to mile 8 or 9 and started having a conversation with that voice. It was telling me to stop. And I answered with “what would I say to people?” And the voice kept coming up with scenarios, so to speak, like “I tripped” or “it was too hot.” And my conscious kept rejecting them, saying, “no that won’t work, nobody will believe

me.” This went on and on, and on . . . until I reached mile 12 and realized the end was in sight. Here’s what you’re up against: “It’s very hard to understand in the beginning that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants to quit” -- Dr. George Sheehan. So what’s the problem, drivers?

Try this one on: “Keep the dream in front of you. Never let it go, regardless of how farfetched it might seem” -- Hal Higdon. Or the gray haired mantra: “Once you’re over the hill, you pick up speed.” Will they work for you? Only time -- your time -- will tell.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Software Updates and Server Crashes By Cliff Blackshear

J

ust a few weeks ago, a 997 owner brings his car in and reports the following: “While driving along, the radio just goes off, then comes back on at times.” We take a look at the car. It is a 2011 model with low miles. It is equipped with a PCM (Porsche Communication Management) system. Most of the cars have a PCM system with various add-on accessories. It can play CDs, has XM radio, Bluetooth to link to phone, Navigation, a port for an iPod connection, display back up camera, trip data, etc., etc. It works well and usually has a Bose amplifier speaker sys-

tem. The super high-end units are equipped with Burmester systems. Porsche constantly has updates for these systems. We can access software and update it. This starts with a simple check of what software level it currently has and what update might be available, so that is where we begin on the 997. No update available for this type of issue. I start thinking it has a hardware problem, and maybe as the system warms up, something internally is failing. Before we can make a decision on what we are going to do, a 2011 Cayenne comes in with the same symptoms. Then a Panamera. Hummm. I file a request with Porsche technical support, and supply all pertinent information

including VIN, mileage, and software levels, plus we generate analysis protocols for each vehicle (these run several hundreds of pages of raw data about each car). Next, I get a phone call from technical support. They are getting these reports from all over the US all at once. Engineering is on red alert and DEFCON 1 has been declared. I am then sent an email with very specific instructions to gather information from each PCM and load it on a memory stick from the onboard USB connection, transfer it to my computer, and forward it ASAP! I am told this seems to be affecting only 2011 cars (all models). Meanwhile they want us to reset the systems to original factory settings, erase any phone-

books, stored data of any type, and retest, then report back. The problem is still there. In about 24 hours I get another call, and am told that XM blasted out a software update over the weekend, which seems to be where the issue started. We are asked to disable XM in a few cars and see what happens. So we go to XM Enabling in our tester and enter a 16-digit code that disables the XM system, then wait to see if problem goes away. Lo and behold, it does. Then we are told to stand by and ask our Porsche owners to be patient. Three days later, on PPN (Porsche Partnership Network), a fix is posted, with very specific instructions. A link to a file is included, and we put the file on a disc. We are instructed to go into the PCM system, reset it again to original factory settings, disable XM, and load the new file. Then re-enable XM,

clear any faults from all software in all systems, and test. It works! We are still dealing with this even now; it takes about an hour to resolve. So today, a car that had this issue orbited into my radar zone when I got to work. The owner had traveled about 150 miles to get to us so we could repair his 2011 Panamera PCM system with a known good fix. I go to PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) to get the 16-digit enabling code needed to complete the repair, and find that Germany’s server is down. Are You Serious????? I get a call from technical, and they want to inquire about a car from last week that we had, regarding the fact that the fix should already have been implemented during the build process. They want more details about what we found, and how we took care of the issue. It was a noise issue in a 2014 Cayman (long story).

After answering their questions, I inquire if there is any way they can get me some enabling codes for an owner that is here and waiting. “No,” I’m told, “We have no access either,” and enabling codes are not stored anywhere else. Major server issue. Just before we hang up he says, “The system is back up.” I run to my computer and get the codes, fix the Panamera, and get the car cleaned as quickly as we can. Good grief . . . Computers can be my best friend and my worst enemy. Cheers all, and thank goodness cooler weather is on the horizon. I counted five track cars in the shop today. There’s a DE coming up, the Club Race at Eagles Canyon, and then Hallett looming. Oh, and all you Mav racers out there? Think Sebring! Man, I love this time of year.

Tech Corner: OH THANK HEAVEN -- Um, Maybe Not! By Ed Mullenix, Tech Session Chair

L

ast November, white group DEer Larry O, PhD type, and current owner of DE instructor Craig J’s ’01 Boxster S, had a catastrophic engine failure. Larry has become quite fast, and with “sticky Hoosiers,” the engine finally became a casualty of Eagles Canyon Raceway. Without any of the after-market mods to preclude oil starvation on hard cornering, Larry’s crankshaft and number six connecting rod gave out. Larry brought me the car just about the time I was moving the shop to Carrollton. After an unintentional three week delay, we totally rebuilt his M96 3.2. This time, it had the “LN” two quart deep sump mod, the “x-51” oil baffle, and an underdrive crankshaft pulley. I own several nice cars, so I don’t particularly want to drive someone else’s car unless absolutely necessary. Whenever I rebuild someone’s engine, I try to put between 50 and 100 miles on the new engine to sort out any glitches. Larry’s rebuild was a classic example why I drive the cars. It wasn’t an issue before, but after the rebuild, the bank one (cylinders 1-3) pre-convertor oxygen sensor decided to die. I replaced the O2 sensor and continued my testing. I drove the car to our monthly club board meeting in March. I had it up to 80 mph on the Bush Tollway and it performed splendidly. That was a Wednesday. By Friday, I had accrued around

26 October

100 miles with no further issues. I called Larry and told him his Boxster was ready to pick up. Because the car had only been driven 100 miles since November, and after road testing had about ¼-tank of old fuel, I suggested that Larry put some fresh fuel in it. That he did. He stopped at the nearest fuel station, which happened to be a franchise station of “Big Slurp” Corporation (the names have been changed to protect the guilty). The Wednesday that I drove the car to our board meeting, it had been raining cats and dogs. Larry filled up the Boxster that following Friday and drove it about a mile to the Bush Tollway on his way home, when the engine just died! He called me and explained what happened. I thought he might have run out of fuel but he said that he just filled up the tank. I hopped in my shop truck, fuel can and code scanner in hand, and met Larry and his recalcitrant Boxster on the shoulder of Bush. I sat in the car and tried to start it. It started right up but ran terribly. I pitched Larry the keys to my truck and had him follow me while I drove his Boxster back to the shop. Let’s see, it runs great before he puts fuel in it, and one mile after filling the fuel tank, the engine dies. Hmm, I smell a fuel problem. The following Saturday morning I hooked up the test wires to the fuel pump relay and raised the car on a lift, trying to get a fuel sample. I connected my sample jar to the fuel return line under the car and energized the fuel pump. Nothing emerged from the return line.

I connected a fuel pressure gauge to the feed line but only saw 45 psi on the gauge. The regulated pressure should be about 55 psi; the fuel pump had failed. I replaced the fuel pump and again tried to get a fuel sample. This time, I got what looked like a quart of dirty creek water and some fuel in my sample jar. Larry had indeed filled his fuel tank with contaminated fuel. I continued to drain fuel from the tank until it no longer contained water. I again started the engine. It ran better but had a misfire on cylinder number three. The number three injector is directly under the inlet fuel line. Any contaminant will affect that injector first. Typically, whenever water enters the fuel tank, which could be a result of moisture condensing from the air, either in the car’s tank or that of the gas station, it is usually only a small amount. Water doesn’t burn so it will cause a brief misfire. Unfortunately, a misfire long enough to set a fault code in the engine computer and turn on the Check Engine light. I prefer not to think about how many times I chased my tail trying to diagnose a water-caused misfire only to find nothing wrong with any component; the minute amount of water had long since exited the tail pipe. Not so with Larry’s S. I had a sample of absolutely nasty fuel. With no more water in the fuel tank, the engine should have run normally. Larry’s did not. I pulled the spark plugs out and performed a compression test on bank one. Cylinder #3

had only 50 psi of compression compared to 150 psi in # 1 and #2. I understand how a bunch of water could have caused the fuel pump to fail, but why would it affect the compression? This is the type of question that is posed on the Master Tech test. I postulated that water had caused the injector to seize in the open position and allowed fuel to collect behind the closed intake valve. When the valve opened, the amount of fuel exceeded the volume of the combustion chamber resulting in a “hydraulic lock.” A resulting bent connecting rod would not allow sufficient compression. A call to Larry ensued with all of the gory details. Calls were made to Big Slurp Corp. and a couple

of attorneys. Big Slurp denied any responsibility and threatened to impound the car until any litigation had concluded (read two years in civil court!), and the aforementioned counselors thought $20,000 sounded like a reasonable fee to pursue the case. No, that’s not the route Larry and I decided to take. I pulled the engine out and removed the 1-3 cylinder head. I rotated the engine and checked the “deck height” of all of the pistons in case there were other casualties. No, all of the pistons came all of the way to the top of the cylinders. What I did find was a broken intake valve spring on cyl. #3. It maintained sufficient pressure to keep the valve from coming loose from the spring keepers, but the oil pressure behind the hydraulic

lifter caused the valve to lift off of the seat, allowing compression loss. In 45 years of working on Porsche automobiles, I have only encountered three broken valve springs. The water-caused fuel pump failure and the broken valve spring are TOTALLY unrelated. Larry had his heart set on attending the DE at Circuit of the Americas last spring. The fuel/valve spring misadventure precluded that from happening. In conclusion, I only buy fuel from the major suppliers, and keep records of my fuel purchases. The broken valve spring issue, be it fate, karma, or the intervention of a higher power, falls into the “sometimes things happen that we cannot understand” category.

Record Broken at the Nürburgring: 918 Spyder By Thomas Becki, Communication Porsche AG

A

s the first vehicle to boast global road homologation, the Porsche 918 Spyder* has conquered the 20.6-kilometer (12.8-mile) lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes. Achieving a time of exactly six minutes and 57 seconds, the super sportscar equipped with a hybrid drive shaved 14 seconds off the previous record. Wolfgang Hatz, member of the Porsche AG Board of Management in charge of Research and Development, had the following to say: “We promised a great deal with the 918 Spyder, namely to redefine driving pleasure, efficiency and performance. We have kept our word.” As is always the case with Porsche, the 918 Spyder is also leading the way for future generations as the latest in the line of super sportscars. It recently made its global debut at the International Motor Show (IAA). With its unique spread, the model blends maximum driving dynamics with minimal fuel consumption. By taking the Nürburgring record, the sportscar is demonstrating the enormous potential that lies in Porsche’s pioneering plug-in hybrid concept, and is

underpinning the leading role the company enjoys when it comes to developing sporty hybrid vehicles. “The radical hybridisation of the 918 Spyder from the very outset is what made this lap record possible” says Dr. Frank Walliser, head of the 918 Spyder project. “The lap time on the Nordschleife is and remains the toughest measure of a super sportscar. Posting a time of 6 minutes 57 seconds, we achieved a result of which everyone in the development team and at Porsche as a whole is rightly proud.”

Marcus Schurig, editor-in-chief of sportscar magazine Sport Auto, was on hand as an objective observer of the record-breaking runs. The two sportscars, which deliver an output of 887 bhp (652 kW), were equipped with the optional “Weissach Package” to increase the driving dynamics, and lead out on the standard Michelin tires developed specifically for the 918 Spyder. * 918 Spyder: combined fuel consumption: 3.3~3.0 liters/100 km (71~78 mpg US); combined energy consumption: 13.0~12.5 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 79~70 g/km The record, which was previously held for four years, was even broken during the first attempt in the test drive on the morning of September 4. All three drivers -- former European Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, Porsche test driver Timo Kluck, and Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb -- were quicker than the existing record with each lap driving the two 918 Spyder models used, and posted lap times of less than seven minutes on numerous occasions. Ultimately, it was Marc Lieb who posted the absolute best time of 6:57, driving at an average speed of 179.5 km/h (111.5 mph), as measured by Wige Solutions.

Š2013 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times. Porsche recommends four winter tires when driving in cold, snowy, or slippery conditions.

Simultaneously breaks new ground, while clinging to the current one. Take the performance that Porsche is known for. Then add to that the strength of a 400 horsepower engine, the design and greater stability of a wider body, the extraordinary traction and agility of all-wheel drive, and an unmistakable illuminated rear light strip. The sum of which is a sports car that holds your attention as tightly as it holds to the road. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Experience the control of all-wheel drive. The new Porsche 911 Carrera 4S.
