Drifting: The Clown in the Circus By John Hamilton, Region President

W

hen asked how we successfully manage so many different programs in our region, I like to use the analogy of the Clown that each of us may have seen when we went to the circus. You know, the one who had that crazy music going and put the sticks in the ground and then started spinning the pie plates? It wasn’t too hard for the first few, but as the number grew, he had to start the new plates and then go back and re-spin the first plates that he put up. So it is with our club. We are so blessed that 52 years ago a few industrious people decided to form the Maverick Region. Then through the years the members started adding new programs: the Monthly Newsletter, Monthly Socials, Concours, Rallies, Drivers’ Education, Autocross, Time Trials, Sunday Drives, etc. Thus it is the job of your board members to keep all of those plates spinning, and add a new plate from time-to-time. In August, we added the Photography 101 program, which is much more than just a training class. It is the beginning to a photography contest (see info later in this issue) to motivate more of us to take and submit quality photographs to Slipstream. Yes, many of us take pictures at our events for personal enjoyment, but we need to share the good pics with the rest of the members in our club! Don’t you really find the articles with a lot of photos to be more interesting (especially if YOU are in the picture)? Another Plate . . . Obviously, we have too much free time on our hands. BUT in thinking about what our readers would enjoy, we’re going to add a “Tech Corner” to your Slipstream magazine. We will be asking YOU, THE READER, to submit the questions that you have about your Porsche, and then have our panel of experts provide the answers. Watch for details in an upcoming issue of Slipstream (or if you can’t wait, send your question to me at president@ mavpca.org, and we’ll get our experts working on it). 2 October

Mav of the Month This month’s Mav of the Month just celebrated the 45th anniversary of his membership in PCA and our Maverick Region, so he has been responsible for putting more than a few plates on the sticks, and for keeping them spinning. We haven’t been able to wear him out, so he just keeps on coming back for more. In fact, Charlie Davis has been the driving force behind our new photography workshop program and contest. Charlie spent weeks putting together the training program and is now hard at work on the contest and data storage aspects of the program. So for all his hard work, dedication and passion: Charlie, this one’s for you. Congratulations on being our Mav of the Month, and enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox Restaurant in Grapevine!

Carey On...

By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor

I

hope you had the chance to attend one of the many PCA events in late August and early September. If you didn’t, we have recaps of several of them in this issue: Boxstoberfest, Charlie Davis’ Photo Workshop, and the Monthly Social at the Whiskey Cake Kitchen and Bar. Events in the second half of September, such as the Time Trial / Autocross weekend at Mineral Wells, the Le Auto Grange charity event in Tyler, and the Lone Star Le Mans races at COTA happened too late for this issue, but will be covered in the November Slipstream. Leadership changes for Maverick Region are on the horizon. Two officers, President John Hamilton and Treasurer Jim Falgout, are stepping down after years of service to the club. We have new candidates for those positions, and you will have your chance to vote for them at our annual end-of-the-year celebration, which we call Founders’ Day, set this year to take place on Saturday, Nov 22. Mail-in ballots will be available in the November Slipstream, but it’s not too late to throw your hat in the ring if you would like to be a part of the process.

Two other positions that are looking for “new blood” are the Time Trial Chair and the Autocross Chair. Travis Howard, who has been involved in both of these series for the last eight years, along with wife Robyn as Registrar and Worker Coordinator, has announced that he needs to turn over the reins of these popular competition driving series to the next generation. If you have been a participant of either of these series, and have enjoyed both the competiton and the friendships that inevitably develop at these events, perhaps you would consider stepping up and taking a shot at running one of them next year. You will have lots of help, and the satisfaction of making a meaningful contribution to the club. I too, as Slipstream Editor, am looking to hand off the responsibility of putting together our newsletter each month. There is no hard deadline for this change, as I want to make it as smooth a transition as possible, but if you would like to be a part of the team, please let me know (editor@mavpca.org). I already have one or two folks who have expressed interest, but the more the merrier! I hope you enjoy this issue. Read on!

Gimme a Minute: September Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began at 7:02pm with Region President John Hamilton introducing guests Jim Hirsch, Jouni Hiltunen, Bryan Karlan, and Jim Ford. We’re always happy to have new members join us! Membership is up again to a total of 1462 Primary and 2355 Total members. We remain in the top five PCA Regions in the country for actual membership growth this year. We were proud to send a check for over $6,000 to the Hope Shelter this month for monies collected since Founders’ Day last November. John also reported that we had a very successful photography event that was oversold. The photography committee wants to hold a photo contest. He made a motion that they be allowed to spend up to $1000 for the contest. They’re also considering having another photo class for those who could not attend the first one. There was a discussion about copyrighting issues and release of photo rights, etc. The motion passed. We have several open positions needing to be filled, including Slipstream editor, Autocross Chair, and Time Trial Chair. There were questions about the editorship and suggestions of how to fill it. Fortunately, Carey Spreen isn’t in a huge hurry to vacate, but wants to move on to other positions in the club. Travis Howard also wants to get fresh blood in his AX/TT Chair positions for new ideas and improvements. We will create ads to promote the openings. Several

6 October

names and ideas were suggested. We also need a graphic artist to create ads. For the time being, Jasmine Shoffit and Abby Maurice will work to share the duties. Slipstream Editor Carey Spreen received an upgraded trophy for the Parade newsletter contest. He’d originally gotten 3rd place, but because of an error in calculations, he should have received 2nd place. That error was corrected and Carey got his rightful award. Congratulations again! David Robertson reported that the nominations committee has identified several candidates for President, Jim Falgout and Ed Mullenix, and one for Treasurer, Richard Solomon. The current Secretary and Vice President have agreed to stay, unless someone else wants to get on the ballot. Richard Solomon said that planning for the September 28 event in Tyler is coming along. There are currently about 45 participants coming from the Metroplex, and he hopes to have many more. Public Relations Chair Linda Bambina is looking for alternative article ideas. She will be done with the “Garage Glimpses” at the end of the year. Treasurer Jim Falgout reported that the club is doing well overall financially, with over $137K in assets. This is due in large part to the strength of the Drivers’ Education series. All other events have been profitable as well. Rally Chair Don Sebert said that the recently very popular Islamorada Rally netted $390 for the club!

September 3, 2014 He will be working with Neill Flood and the Sunday Drive committee to put together a rally/drive combined event later this year. Bruce McQuaid will be working with Gareth Maurice in the spring on the Teen Driving Event. Membership Chair Tom Froehlich asked about a COTA report, as he wasn’t able to attend the meeting last month. While the region did make money on the event, there was a pretty high risk involved. That prompted discussion about whether to support future events there or not. Discussion was tabled. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey was excited about the upcoming Boxstoberfest weekend. Nearly 30 Mavericks were going to attend. The Sunday Drive to Grandpappy Point is all set and ready to go for Oct. 12. The November drive (on Saturday, Nov 15) will end at the Vetro Glass Blowing shop in Grapevine, and the December Drive will be another toy run event to the Hope Shelter. He’s thankful for his drive leaders being willing to step up to larger responsibilities in the future. Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor reported that the DE at MotorSport Ranch was full in the lower run groups, and had larger-than-usual numbers in the higher run groups. He’s all about Porsche Passion. Daren Kirbo will be filling in for him this upcoming DE weekend several times, as he has other commitments that have come up. He has all the track dates reserved for 2015. We had a discussion about safety issues in the higher run groups.

Time Trial/Autocross Chair Travis Howard is still looking for replacements to take on the two programs. There’s an event coming up in Mineral Wells (a TT/ AX weekend). The AX course will be a modified version of the one from this year’s Parade in Monterey. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported that the CR committee has begun planning discussions for the upcoming event in November at MotorSport Ranch. Several of our guests introduced themselves throughout the evening. All seemed happy to have joined the club and are willing to jump in to help where they can, including providing brainstorming ideas and feedback for the event chairs. We were very pleased to have them all at the meeting, and look forward to their future involvement. Lastly, John Hamilton announced the Maverick of the Month, Charlie Davis, most specifically for his tireless work on the photo seminar. Congratulations! Meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm.

Garage Glimpses: A Most Interesting Arrangement By Linda Bambina, Region PR Chair

I

’ve been invited to garages that are big, bigger, and huge. I’ve seen garages with interesting and well-loved cars, even some very creative ways of parking them. But Jacques (Jack) and Kitty Krielen have a MOST interesting arrangement in their new retirement. They have six Porsches that fit nicely into two garages, in two very different homes, in two very different countries! And that’s a first for this feature article writer.

Kitty and Jack in their 964

Part of the “Dutch Historical Car Society” collection and attended a number of their driving schools. But the best part is that he and his friends (calling themselves the “Dutch Historical Car Society”) re-furnished an old barn so they could store their own special “historic” cars, have a place to display memorabilia, hang out, and talk cars ad infinitum. Jack has been talking Porsches since he “saw the light” at age 15. One of his brother’s friends had a 356, and that helped to create some huge dreams for this now international businessman. Jack

Jack and Kitty split the year between Southlake, TX and Haarlem, The Netherlands. His home in Haarlem is less than 10 minutes from the Circuit Park Zandvoort. Jack has watched the Dutch Grand Prix there many times

Outside the Haarlem garage with their Carrera 2, 356B, and 911SC.

Photos by Jacques Krielen He immediately joined PCA and discovered Lime Rock Park racetrack in Connecticut. Within two years he was back in Europe, and had a great time with the Germany Region driving the Nurburgring (“The Green Hell”) about eight times. He bought, sold, and traded Porsches all along the way. He has recently found and restored his first Porsche (the SC) to new condition.

A view of the garage from the bar. Then he bought a 1962 356B T6, and has had THIS one restored to join the others, namely the 1978 911SC, a 1991 964 Carrera 2, and a 2009 997 Carrera 4S. But wait! There’s more: two years ago Jack and Kitty wanted a house in Southlake near some Texas friends. This garage is large enough to creatively park three cars – one from another Jack (“Mary Lou”) – a 964 Cabriolet plus a new 997 C2S along with a daily driver for Kitty! A most interesting arrangement!

got his business degrees in Texas (scholarship to Texas Tech!), began his career with TI, and then went with Nestle until he retired, traveling all over the US and Europe.

How many garages have you seen with a bar, piano, and seating for six? 8 October

Jack didn’t buy his first Porsche until 1978 in New York. Though he went shopping for a used one, he ended up buying a brand new 911SC, in Mocha Brown, at night!

No, it’s not a post card, but it could have been!

Five-Speed Chatter: “To Shift, or Not to Shift . . .” Part 2 By Ash Seidl-Staley

L

ast month I went over my shifting problems and the steps I took to fix them. I outlined how to replace the front shifter bushings at the firewall, the side shift housing bushing, and the rear ball cap bushing; but these steps were just half of the procedures needed to get my car back on the road. Up next was the infamous firewall bushing. Now, remember how I thought that getting the pin out of the front shifter coupling was difficult? It turns out that replacing the firewall bushing is even more of a bear. Again, my online research told me to jack the car up and push the shifting rod (the one in the cab’s center tunnel) forward so it isn’t poking out the hole. Then the articles say to “simply pop in” the new bushing, but an issue with this step immediately surfaced. The bushing is too big to just pop in the hole! Even after greasing the bushing, hammering it, and applying all of my muscular force (being careful not to knock the car off jacks) I still couldn’t get the darn thing in.

Photos by the Author

At this point I went to the Internet to see if there were any “insider” tricks to accomplish the task. There were in fact several ways other owners were able to get the bushing in, but the one most commonly used was to submerge the bushing in a coffee cup of water and cook it in the microwave for three minutes. When the water starts boiling, remove the cup and quickly run to your car, carefully pull out bushing, and pop it into the hole. Now I would love to tell you that the trick worked, but in reality it did not! Time after time I would go in the house, nuke the bushing, and run outside to the car, burning myself all along the way; after four times I gave in. In my mind I believed the trick would work if I just had a little more room to maneuver under the car, but I had already wasted too much daylight in my attempts to keep on trying. Instead, I put everything else back together and, about two weeks later, I was able to visit our good friends at Jack Junkies and forcefully pressed in the bushing while it was high up on the lift. Installation of the shifter bar was basically just the reverse of the removals steps. I fed the rear section

of the bar through the newly-replaced side shift housing bushing and into the rear ball cap coupler. Making sure everything lined up wasn’t really an issue, because the cone screw that secures the bar to the coupler will only tighten all the way if the bar is properly oriented. For the front shifter coupling I fed the bar in the cab’s tunnel through the firewall hole and connected the coupler to the bar with a new cone screw. With everything back on the car, I made sure all my connections were tight and greased, replaced the rear dust cover at the transmission, and sat down in the cab to start adjusting my shift pattern.

Shift coupling at firewall installed you will get through it! For me I found that the only way I could get the pattern I wanted was to adjust then test, then adjust and then test again. I spent the next day or so driving the car and pulling over to tweak the lever to the point that there were no crunches, and at the same time, I was most comfortable shifting.

13mm bolt at base of shifter used for adjustment

Once all adjustments had been made and everything was finally put back together, I cannot begin to tell you how much better my shifting has become. I feel like I traded in the sloppy barrel of marshmallows for a sturdy, smooth, barrel of concrete with a near perfect shift pattern. Time to drive!

In order to adjust the shift pattern, all that is needed is a 13mm socket with socket wrench, a pair of vise grips (or pliers), and patience. There are two basic principles to adjustment: the first is the “fore and aft” adjustment which makes getting from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th easier or harder. The second is the rotation of the shifter bar, which can make getting from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th easier or harder. Adjusting the “fore and aft” play is pretty simple -- just loosen the 13mm bolt that holds the front shifter bar to the shift lever and move the gear shifter forwards or backwards. Be careful though -- moving the lever too far back will cause the shifter bar to unhook from the base of the lever! Adjusting the rotation is done by loosening the shift bar to shift lever bolt, then hopping out of the car and removing the cone screw from the shifter coupling at the fire wall, rotating the bar 90 degrees or so, and then tightening everything up. This might seem a little daunting at first but if you bring the all-important tool of patience to the garage

Commentary from the Left Seat: Pride of Ownership By Robert L. Turner

orsche ownership – it should have been a momentous occasion, but it wasn’t. If you will remember last month’s column, I had imported a few gray market cars and saved enough to buy one of my own. Now US$2000 does not buy much of a car, but I did find a Porsche. It was a red 1972 Porsche 914 that I saw in a vast warehouse in the dying light of the day. Fast-forward a couple of months and the car had been delivered to the US. Now it was time to live my gray market dream. I walked into the warehouse in Houston to pick up my 914 and expected to see something low and red, in perfect condition, just waiting for me to twist the key and drive it home. It was low, it was red, but where did all the rust come from? That telltale sign of bubbly paint (pushed up from what should be smooth metal) was on each lower quarter panel, along the lower edges of both doors, and along most of the other panels for that matter. And that was the rust I could see (even the slots for the jack were rusted over). I would later discover that it was underneath the car as well; the dreaded tin worm had spread to just about everywhere else. Where was the beautiful car I looked at in Karlsruhe, Germany, you know, the one I saw in the last fading rays of sunlight; that shaft of light angling through the high windows, making

the dust in the warehouse sparkle? Yeah, there was a shaft alright, but I was the one that got shafted, not the last rays of sunlight . . . The place where I picked it up did me a favor and gave me a paper license plate, good for 30 days. There was a large envelope filled with the paperwork, all the importation docs, the EPA and DOT release (being a 1972, it was exempt) and the German TUV title – an old faded green piece of paper that had a lot of scribbling in German on it. I took the keys and opened the door; at least the interior was in very good shape. Twisting the key, the engine caught on the third try and fired up. Shifting into first, the transmission gave that angry grinding cough of gears not synching correctly, so I let out the clutch and pressed it back in slowly; now the gears meshed. I started back towards Austin, hoping to beat Houston traffic. It had been cloudy, looking like rain as I drove northwest towards Austin. But as I got out of town, the clouds parted and the sun came out. Pulling over to the side of the road, I wanted to take the roof panel off and bask in the glory of a sunny day. Loosening the top, I went to the rear trunk to open it, but a sudden gust of wind caught me off guard, ripping the trunk out of my hands, it bent forwards towards the front of the car, breaking both hinges completely off. I stared at the trunk lying on top of the roof and could not believe my lousy luck. It could not get worse. It did. A short time later, I got pulled over by the State Police – I had been doing 70 mph in a 65 mph

zone. He reached for his book to write the ticket, but took pity on me when I told him my sorrowfilled story, and when I pointed to the speedo registering Kilometers per hour, not Miles per hour, he let me off with a stern warning. Finally made it back to Austin without further incident, thank goodness. I hated calling Germany during the day; it cost a lot of money, so I waited until the middle of the night (morning in Germany) and called the guy I had purchased the car from. I called and called and the phone just rang and rang, nobody answered. Really, I do not know what I expected; maybe for him to take it back, I don’t know. But I tried over the next week or so and nobody picked up. Finally I called the shipping company that had handled the transatlantic shipment, and they answered the phone alright. I was routed through to a senior manager who wanted to know if I knew where this individual who sold me the car was. I did not; I was calling to complain about the vehicle I received, I had been ripped off. He said I was not alone, there had been many people that had called to complain, but at least I had a car and a title, most of the other people that called had neither. I had to talk to the German police and told them the same thing. They thanked me for calling and that was that. I called my friend Hans and he told me the sorry tale, at least everything he knew or guessed. It appeared that this guy was collecting a lot of money from his US customers and holding it. He made up a variety of excuses telling them that cars were delayed,

shipments missed, inspections incomplete, deliveries rescheduled.

were too many people trying to sell too many cars to too few people.

He had been in this business for a long time and had a good reputation, but he had other plans. He kept all the money and skipped out with his wife to Brazil, taking over US$2 Million. What really made me mad was that he and his wife left their two huge Great Danes at the office, with just a bit of food and water. They were found several days later, very hungry, very thirsty, but only a little worse for it.

So I was stuck with this beat down 914. A few weeks later, I still had not registered the car, but knew that I should. The paper tag had just about expired when I went to register it. I had been dreading it, as all the paperwork was in German. I went into the Texas Department of Transportation and patiently waited my turn.

Hans reminded me “I told you so;” he knew this fellow’s true character. Too bad for me – and all the rest of the people that got ripped off – that we did not know how this guy really operated. I thanked Hans. I was done buying grey market cars, the tide had turned, and there was little demand. It was fun while it lasted. But in the end, it withered on the vine, another victim of its own success; there

I went to the window and placed the request for a Texas title on the counter along with all the supporting information. The gal behind the counter took one look at it and hung her head, shaking it back and forth, no doubt asking herself, “why did I get him?” She looked at me and asked what language this was in. I replied that it was German, and she informed me that she did not read German. I told her that I did not either. This was going to take a while.

She told me to wait while she went to get a supervisor; both returned a short time later, and I went through the same info once again. At one point they just looked at each other, having no idea what to do. Finally the supervisor said to the gal to do the best she could, turned and walked away. Wow! I pointed to each section and told her what it meant (I at least knew enough about German titles from all the cars I imported) and together we figured it all out. It took a long time, and no doubt all those folks behind me in line wished I was somewhere else. But I left with a temporary title, plates, and a registration sticker. The car was now US legal. A 1972 Porsche 914 with a lot of rust . . . wow, the dream of Porsche ownership fulfilled. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.

Seat Time: Charlie Davis’ Photography Workshop By John Leto Another beautiful August Saturday morning began when I woke up at 8am, thinking that I wanted to sleep in. Time to get started on those Saturday chores, oh boy. I knew I was forgetting something, when my ears started burning, and a little voice told me to check e-mail. Yeah right, something I actually do at home about once every three years. I fired up the old bit pusher and logged into e-mail. About 18 e-mails down the pile I spotted one from Charlie Davis dated 8/23. I opened the e-mail and discovered I was waitlisted for today’s photography workshop. There were a couple of cancellations and he wanted to know if I could make it. Now it’s 9am and I’m about 20 miles and 6 million red traffic lights away. I told Charlie “I’m on my way.” I think events are more enjoyable when you’re rushing to make it in time for the drivers’ meeting!

Photos by The Class

I arrived at Park Place Porsche with 5 minutes to spare, and was greeted by Parts Manager Randall Johnson with a blocked off parking spot just for me. Randall escorted me to the classroom full of Mavs. Charlie was behind a computer, a DLP projector, and a huge wall screen. Cool! Charlie introduced the topic: The Slipstream team is looking for photographs taken by Region members from the many first-class events that take place

Second Place: Will Leven, Canon EOS 50D

First Place: Bill Young, Nikon Df From my experience, if you have a chance to attend a free workshop associated with your hobby, take advantage of it. Regardless of the hobby, seat time makes you better. Especially when it is a Maverick event!

throughout the year. He introduced the workshop goals: (1) We will learn how to be Maverick Slipstream photographers; (2) we will receive an introduction to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and (3) we will be shooting photographs for an informal competition. In true Maverick tradition there are prizes for 1st and 2nd place. Prizes at a photography workshop? I learn something new every day. Then came the photo competition rules (PCR’s): We get turned loose in the Park Place Porsche multistory parking garage, for an hour, with ALL new Porsches, and a goal to take photographs with

Brian O’Hearn, Nikon D700 16 October

John Leto, Pentax K10D We judged each photo until we had the Top Three, but only 1st and 2nd place would trophy.

Steve Cloutier, Nikon D5100 Porsches and Mavs in the frame, in RAW format. Okay, Porsches and People; I can dig it! After an hour we were directed back to the classroom, where we all had lunch, while Charlie col-

Linda Bambina, Nikon D40X lected from each of us our single most favorite photograph. We then all worked through each photo as a group, cropping, shading, highlighting, and tweaking each photo before the judging began.

You be the judge. The 1st and 2nd place photos are not your grandma’s Brownie snap shots; they are winners. The first ever Photography Workshop was a typical Maverick event, professional and interactive all the way. Chores? What chores? When it’s another beautiful day in the Maverick Region? Because it’s not just the cars, it’s the people (with photos to prove it).

It’s Not Just the Cameras, It’s the People! Our Photography Workshop is history. I think we generated some enthusiasm among the attendees and the students took some good photos during the Workshop. They are in the MR Gallery: http://mavpca.org/photos/MRPhotoGallery/index.html You will find lots of other photos in this Gallery. If you didn’t attend the Workshop, all the lessons are available: http://mavpca.org/photos/PhotographyWorkshop/PDF/

The next step is our first Photography Contest, which will be in conjunction with Founder’s Day. Three professional photographers will judge this contest. All of them are current/ past MR members, so they understand. You do not have to be a professional or have attended our Photography Workshop to enter. There is no entry fee. There will be prizes and publication in Slipstream. We will have details soon; keep watching! Charlie Davis, Region Histographer

Boxstoberfest 2014: First-Timer Impressions By Linda Bambina

Photos by George Luxbacher

Y

ep! Alan and I are First Timers at something Porsche! We’ve been part of Maverick Region for over 30 years and have been active a great deal of that time. But I had no clue that Boxstoberfest has been happening in one of my favorite getaways, Fredericksburg, for 16 years!

I became interested when one of my ex-students, Derek Stutsman, saw us at the Porsche Parade in Monterey this summer and had given me quite a pitch to try it! He has attended about half the events, starting with the VERY first one back in 1998. He remembers that “the Boxster was still a pretty rare car back then, so they drew a crowd everywhere they stopped.” With guidance from Gabe Sorrells about the Hanger Hotel and how to find the registration info, we were set.

Alan and Linda Bambina, Tom Froehlich, John and BJ Harvey, and Kitty Krielen head to the Drivers’ Meeting But there was still another surprise waiting for us on the morning that we parked 112 Porsches along the perimeter of the local airport: a delightful “ghost” from the past!! Bob Bianconi had been Maverick’s Concours Chair for our 2004 Porsche Parade in Ft. Worth, AND it turns out, one of the “founding fathers” of the Boxstoberfest event! A natural innovator, he was also the one who created the popular Concours event at May at Mayo’s decades ago. There were about 25 Maverick couples this year, which was a delight. This event is organized so that you have lots of time for visiting! As it turns out, there is also lots of time for dancing! Just ask the Harveys or the Froehlichs -- they were the life of the party out on the dance floor, when the Swing Band played after Saturday’s dinner in the Quonset Huts next to the Hanger Hotel.

A total of 112 Porsches lined up for a photo opp on the tarmac. 20 October

At the Saturday night banquet. Foreground: Jeff and Kim Van Sicklen with Gabe and Chris Sorrells. Background: Mark and Susan Winkelman, Tracy and David Robertson, and Kitty and Jack Krielen.

Chevy truck and a huge Pinup Girl Billboard next to a vintage plane. The laid-back event was very well organized; its leaders were completely ready for the crowd. The tours were divided by interests, how fast and how

A taste of the sweeping Hill Country scenery that we experienced on the tours Susan Froehlich, Patti Pettit, BJ Harvey, and Gabe Sorrells at the Show and Shine. far you wanted to go, and then sub-divided into smaller run groups, quite manageable since there were written instructions for all, and radio contact for many of us. Great weather – just high fluffy clouds to keep things cool. Yes, it was all very cool.

The whole location outside of Fredericksburg is a fantastic set up for some fabulous fun. There’s an “Officer’s Club” where everyone can play pool, visit, and have drinks from the beautiful bar. There’s a ’50s style Diner with great food, fun atmosphere, and huge windows viewing the active airfield. There’s an old ’26

Susan Froehlich, Dee Luxbacher, and BJ Harvey performing their Vegas revue.

A word from your Tourmeister: Special thanks to Michael Shassere and his team in organizing another fabulous Boxstoberfest. Also, thank you Jeff Van Sicklen and Park Place Porsche for sponsoring the event. Speaking as a route leader, we had a tight group that seemed to flow through the twisties like water down a stream. The band this year was fantastic, and it was well received by the Mavericks, as we entertained the entire banquet crowd and didn’t even require a cover charge!

The spoiler inscription pretty much sums it up . . .

Some of my observations concerning the Saturday dance contest: • Susan Eagan and Brendan “Boots” Eagan: Best Gliding around the Dance Floor. • B.J. Harvey, Dee Luxbacher, and Susan Froehlich: Best All-Girl “Vegas Style” Dance-A-Thon. • Myself: Best One-Legged dancing involving a Sceptre. See you all again next year! John Harvey 21
