Shifting Gears: Something for everyone By Jim Falgout, Region President

W

ell, October finally arrived. Cooler weather is here and lots of activities for you to enjoy your Porsche. We have everything from Time Trials, Drivers’ Education, Rally, and Autocross, for those of you who like competitive driving events. Lunches, Socials, and Sunday Drives (could be included in driving event) for those of you who prefer events that are not so competitive. Of course, many of you go for both types of events. So enjoy! Soon after October we will have our biggest social event of the year, Founders’ Day. It is a celebration of our Region, and it includes a Photography Contest and a silent auction to raise money for one of our charities. It is a black tie optional event at Bent Tree Country Club, which is where we held it last year. It was a fun event. This event is planned and organized by our Social Committee which is chaired by Tracy Robertson. Get ready, here it comes! She NEEDS YOUR HELP. We need folks to assist her, especially with obtaining items for the Silent Auction. If you can assist her in any way with this important event, please contact Tracy at social@mavpca.org.

Soon after October we will have our biggest social event of the year, Founders’ Day.

I have another request for assistance. At the September Board meeting your Board approved establishing a committee to evaluate charitable requests. Part of our charge from Porsche Club of America is to support our communities. I had some volunteers from the Board, but I want some non-board club members to assist with this important task. If you would like to support your club in this area, please contact me at president@mavpca.org. YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU . . . to get involved. You will really be glad you did. I recently attended a Cars and Coffee that is held at a competing auto dealer in far North Dallas. There was section coned off for Porsche, thanks to one of our members. I met other members and non-members. Two of the non-members whom I met actually joined the next day. However, there were at least two long-time members who said they never come to club events. They did indicate that 2 October

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 they read Slipstream. So, if you are one of those, please try something. We have so much to offer and you can meet some really neat people. It really is “not just the cars, it’s the people”. Finally, remember to vote in your club’s annual officer elections. The ballot can be found on page 11.

Mav of the Month And speaking of people: it is the dream of every volunteer organization to have a new member come along who takes on a major task, does a great job, and then takes on additional tasks which enhance the club experience for others. Your club has been the benefactor of just such a member in Jim Hirsch. Soon after joining, he took on the gargantuan task of Slipstream editor. He is not only doing a great job at that, but also set up a Twitter account and is monitoring our Facebook page. For all those reasons, Jim Hirsch is our Mav of the Month. Thanks Jim for all you are doing.

Gimme a Minute: September Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he September 2 board meeting began with President Jim Falgout making a motion for the club to donate $500 to the GoFundMe set up for our DE corner worker coordinator and tower control person, Mary Coney. The motion was approved. Jim also mentioned the Boot Campaign charity. Richard Solomon summarized the presentation from last month’s meeting. This would be in addition to the Hope House. Charity Chair Chris Hamilton sent her approval for the Boot Campaign charity via her husband John and said that we normally contribute about $5000 annually to Hope. Other clubs have reported giving as much as $20K to their charities, and they would like us to increase our giving. Vice President Gareth Maurice said we should give of our time and not just money. All were in favor of keeping our ongoing commitment to the Hope House, as well as adding other charities. A motion was made to support the Boot Campaign, and a committee would be created to review and evaluate charitable requests going forward. Jim Falgout pointed out that the Masonic Lodge of Dallas has a car show on Nov. 14 to benefit a local charity. This year’s theme is Porsche. More information later. Jim then reported for Chris Tabor that Amber Stice will be taking over for Mary Coney for the upcoming DE Events while she recovers. VP Gareth Maurice noted that all insurance was ready for fall events. Membership Co-Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich reported our primary members are now at 1589 and total members are 2497. We’re all excited about the continued positive trend. Social Chair Tracy Robertson indicated that Founders’ Day will be Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas as it was last year. Charlie Davis needs support for the photo contest. Several offered their help. Tracy also needs help for the 6 October

FD event. She would like to have a social committee established for ongoing events and activities. Sunday Drive Chair Tom Martin discussed the upcoming Saturday Drive on Sept 19 to East Texas. The Boot Campaign will be there to create awareness of their organization, but not to fundraise. The October 17 drive will start at Lake Worth and finish in Granbury. Future events may include wineries. Slipstream Editors Jim Hirsch and Carey Spreen said that 1,775 copies were sent out for September. All praised for the great work, including four newly added pages. Richard Solomon said the printing invoice increased more than $600 and wanted to verify. Jim mentioned the New Member Directory buying information will be in the October Issue. He then handed out guidelines for Slipstream to be discussed later. He will have a sample 2016 calendar at the next meeting for approval. Carey then suggested we cap the page count at the September size and start a waiting list for advertisers. Tom Martin suggested we post ad rates in Slipstream and maybe have a business card sized space at a reduced rate. Rally Chair Don Sebert discussed the Oct 10 Rally [Editor’s note: now scheduled for Oct 31] at the Frisco Museum and ending at the Lewisville Witherspoon Brewery. Tasting tours will be available for attendees at $10 each. Treasurer Richard Solomon reported that we have roughly $150K available to us currently, including advertising revenue and a PCA National Subsidy. Total revenue for the year minus expenses for the year gives us an $11K excess. Time Trial Chair Travis Howard noted that he renewed the registration for the Truxster and is moving it to a temporary location for storage, which will not be the same as the club’s other storage (price too high). Registration for the Oct 4 Time Trial event is now open on clubregistration.net. Reporting for Swap Meet Chair Robyn Howard,

September 2, 2015 Travis said the Swap Meet is scheduled for Saturday, Oct 17 at Zims Autotechnik, who will be giving 15% off new parts on that day. Tech Chair Ed Mullinex will write an article on winterizing your car. John Hamilton presented a Porsche wireless mouse to purchase for $20 plain or $25 with a logo. We discussed that we can sell for $40-45 at Founders’ Day, giving the proceeds to the Boot Campaign. More details later. As Nominating Committee chair, he said that all was set for the elections and a ballot in October’s Slipstream. Concours Chair Andy Kay said there might be a detailing event at Autobahn. He also mentioned that the 928 group meets the first Saturday of the month. He has written an article about the Pebble Beach Concours event. He also attended a Concours event held by Lone Star Region (Houston area). For $20 visitors got a hat, shirt, and raffle ticket. He would like to put on such an event with sponsorship. There seems to be interest and will follow up. Lastly, he indicated he needed to order new Concours medals. John Hamilton made a motion to approve up to $500 to purchase them. Motion passed. Monthly Dinner Social Chair Stephanie Ho said that the Wildwood Grille Happy Hour had great attendance of 80+ with 60+ staying for dinner. The September event was on the 17th at Arthur’s in Addison with discounted drinks, hors d’oeuvres , and an extended happy hour. October’s event will be at Love & War in Texas. November will be at the Hilton Garden Inn in Richardson with 50% off drinks, etc. No December event due to its proximity to the holidays. Jim Falgout recognized the efforts of a fairly new member and his outstanding contributions to the club. Congratulations to Jim Hirsch on being Maverick of the Month! Many thanks to Richard Solomon for taking notes in my absence. Meeting was adjourned.

“. . . it’s the people”: Richard Solomon As told to Linda Bambina by Richard Solomon

I

n past articles, we have highlighted long-time Mav members that have been involved for decades with our club. Now it is time to introduce you to relatively new members that have jumped in there and gotten involved. The first Mav we’d like to highlight is none other than our newest Treasurer, Richard Solomon. Richard just became a 5-year member (Happy Anniversary!) but started coming to our Board meetings about a year and a half ago to see what was going on in the club. He really got involved in 2014 when he introduced us to his long-time Tyler friend and car lover, collector, and Mav member, Billy Hibbs, Jr. Mr. Hibbs invited the club out to a one-of-a-kind fundraising event at his car barn highlighting his 1968 Porsche 908 and special guest, legendary Porsche driver Vic Elford. What a great event! Richard was elected as our Treasurer in November and has been active ever since. Let’s learn more about this relatively new member! Richard lives in Tyler, but works several days a week in Dallas for a community bank. Richard has been in the banking business for nearly 30 years in the North Texas area (probably a good choice for a Treasurer). Richard is married to his long-time love of nearly 27 years, Kelly. He has two boys, one of which is in Dental School and the other is a senior at Texas A&M University. By the way, Richard is Texas A&M class of ‘86 and loves his Aggies (check out the plate on his 911: “AGS911”). He works in the Addison area of North Dallas several days a week and The Aggie plate has been a Porsche lover for roughly 30 years. When Richard was about 18 or 19 years old he pulled up in the parking lot of Brookhaven College during the summer of ‘82 or ‘83. He looked over to his left and saw his very first up-close 911! It was a beautiful Guards Red 911 that looked pristine and had the one-of-a-kind aircooled engine sound. It was at that moment the Porsche love affair began. He vowed that day that he would own a 911. After he married Kelly in 1987, he let her know early that he was going to own a 911 one day! However, as you can imagine, growing a family and other responsibilities caused that dream to be put on the shelf. Well, the time had finally come! In early 2008, all the “planets” lined up for Richard to start looking for his 10 October

Photos by Richard Solomon and Linda Bambina first 911. His boys were 17 and 14 at the time, and they couldn’t wait for him to buy his first car; some would say the whole family was tired of hearing about 911’s, stopping at dealerships around the country during summer vacations to check out the latest models, and seeing all the magazines around the house (of course that is just rumor)! So Richard had his eye on a 2004 996 911 C4S with Arctic Silver exterior, finished with full black leather. To hear him speak, he didn’t get much sleep while searching the universe for that perfect car! While all this was going on, the crash of 2008 hit! Oh NO!!! Although determined and relatively not affected, his search continued on. One day that fall, Richard’s wife asked him, “Should a banker buy a Porsche 911 during these tough economic times? How would it look to your customers?” Oh, what a wise girl. After some discussion and thought, Richard thought it best to wait . . . . We heard from folks within the Solomon camp that depression set in for Richard. He was soooo close to buying his first car! After a few months of good cooking from his wife and going to some Fight’n Texas Aggie football games, his depression faded. We fast forward to 2012. It was now time again for Richard to find that perfect car! The detailed and relentless search began. Because he had waited to Richard’s 911 buy the 911, he could now buy a better and more highly-optioned late model car. So the search began for a used 2009 997.2 S model. In August of that year, he found a beautiful silver Carrera at Bob Moore Porsche in OK City. Although not an “S” model it was a fully optioned car with S wheels, sport exhaust, sport tuned, Alcantara trim throughout, and for a great price! On August 18, 2012, Richard picked up his first 911, a dream come true!!

Smile for the Camera: Second Annual Photography Workshop By Charlie Davis

O

n August 15 we held the second MR-PCA Photography Workshop. Our goal in conducting these Workshops is to encourage and enable members to take excellent pictures, which usually requires they be edited. We need more great pictures for Slipstream and our website.

Photos courtesy of the Author Not all the images had both People and Porsches, but many did. The cover photo for this issue was taken by Stephanie Ho. It was one of the pictures that didn’t include a Person, but it had her shoes as human surrogate.

Now we know the Person whose reflection is in Bruce’s shot!

One style that was popular was reflecting a Person in Porsche paint. This example by Bruce Hildewig is a good example:

I made the subject the antique mailbox of the Old School, but also got People and Porsches in the background.

Some attendees this year had new cameras that they needed help understanding. Others had old cameras that they still hadn’t mastered. I think we answered most questions and also provided ways to get more information. We had several Porsches in the parking lot at the Old Bedford School in Bedford, where we held this Workshop. I challenged the students to go outside and take pictures with both a Person and a Porsche in each picture. They could make either one the “subject”, but I wanted them to capture both in one image. They did pretty well with this task! There is a gallery of their submissions on the Region website: just click on the “Photo Gallery” tab and keep going down to the gallery: 2015/Social Events/Photography Workshop.

12 October

Not only did he get P&P, he also got the Old School in the background. He was captured taking this picture by two other photographers, including this one by Steve Perrin:

Another genre is the ubiquitous short depth-of-field capture, where much of the background is out-offocus. A couple of us did this type shot. Here is one of mine:

Barbara Kauffmann’s approach was to take a “selfie in Porsche paint [Travis Howard’s Boxster]:

We encourage all photographers to join us for the next Workshop. We have fun, and most everyone learns something about their camera and the process of taking and editing digital pictures. You can view more photos in full resolution from the workshop at: http://mavpca.org/photos/PhotoDrop/ PhotographyWorkshop2015/ In the meantime, there is a large group of lessons on the website. You can find them at: http://mavpca.org/photos/PhotographyLessons/ I have made them available as both Power Point presentations [.PPT] and as Adobe Acrobat files [.PDF]. We encourage all photographers to submit their pictures to our Photo Drop at: http://mavpca.org/photos/PhotoDrop/ This requires an FTP client on your computer and a secret password to upload. To get the secret password, contact me at chuxter@1derful.info. There are instructions about how to setup your computer to do FTP transfers, which can be difficult for beginners: http://mavpca.org/photos/FTPinstructions/ Hope you can make it to the next one!

First Porsche: Germany Region PCA By Voy “Mitch” Mitchell

S

o there I was, a young Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer in Germany, stationed at a communications unit which was completely surrounded by the forests of the Rheinland-Pfalz. Having recently placed an order for a new Porsche 356 C, I was pretty much looking for anything that would take my mind off the months before my car would be delivered. Little did I realize that I would be involved in something the PCA had never attempted before: the formation of a Region outside the continental United States. In early April 1963, I was approached by a friend in my unit who owned a 1961 356B 1600 Cabriolet. He knew that I had a new Porsche on order and asked if I wanted to accompany him to a meeting to investigate the possibility of forming a PCA Region covering all of West Germany. A day or two later we drove to a Gasthaus in Kaiserslautern, the Barbarossahof, where we joined 13 other Porsche owners and were greeted by Frank Beckett, the moderator/chair of the meeting. If approved, he said that this region’s members would consist of military and Department of Defense civilian employees. On May 6, I met with Frank Beckett and signed the petition requesting that PCA approve the creation of a Germany Region. I was the 15th and final person to sign. The region was approved, officers elected, By-Laws written, and the Germany Petition creating a PCA Region was off Germany Region and running. Frank Beckett was elected as first president. The club grew as more Porsche owners learned of its existence. The region was very active, with social gatherings, rallies, and gymkhanas. Gymkhanas were always conducted on a military installation, usually Ramstein Air Base, with socials and rallies held “off base.” 16 October

Photos courtesy of the Author At some point PCA Badges must have been manufactured by E.F. Wiedmann, a German company in Frankfurt am-Main, before a suitable American company was given the contract. Frank Beckett was aware of this and received permission from PCA National to have the German company manufacture badges for the The original Germany Germany Region since they Region PCA badge still had the badge dies. Not only did this speed up delivery of badges to our region but, in my opinion, we received a superior quality badge. Along with the badge, we received a region tab with the word “Germany” on it. The badges were expensive though: $10.00 per badge! In other club business, a newsletter was established and named. “Das Blinking Blatt” was drawn from several name submissions, and in short order members were receiving then state-of-the art newsletters produced using the mimeograph process. By today’s standards, a mimeographed paper would be akin to a child’s first writing attempt, but many copies could be reproduced so it served our purposes very well. I was known for my contacts in both Army and Air Force units and was able to get the Air Force printing plant at Ramstein to produce a master, which consisted of just the newsletter header and art work. This ensured that the header location would be consistently reproduced from month to month. My Army contacts printed each month’s newsletter (all bootleg work of course). Personally, I wasn’t too impressed with the newsletter name. After all, who had ever heard of a “Blinking Paper”? I still have a copy of the November 1963 newsletter, probably because it lists the results of an early rally in which my navigator and I placed third out of twelve entrants. At that time, rallies were becoming harder and harder, incorporating map reading and overlays, and it was clear that my navigator and I would soon be one of the bottom dwelling teams. After approval by PCA National, membership was soon extended to German Nationals, and the two salesmen at Rittersbacker were quick to join. They in turn recruited other German members, thus giving club membership a quick boost. I remember one of the Germans had a contact who owned a winery along the Mosel River and we were able to visit for a wine tasting. After the rallies

became more difficult, another German could always be seen parked at some Gasthaus along the way and it was clear that he had decided it was no longer worth his while to continue to compete. Once or twice I stopped to join him and each time I found him sitting near the front of the Gasthaus with a glass of beer and an order of Escargot in front of him. I considered trying the Escargot but could never get past the look of the green “mess” stuffed into the shells on his plate. He claimed that not only were they good, but they were good for you. I never found out! It wasn’t very long before Colonel Beckett was reassigned to duty in the states, and only then did I find out that he was one of the founding members of PCA. Apparently he had a history of forming PCA Regions when he was assigned to areas where none existed, and his Germany assignment was no exception.

Archives and the Rennlist forums, but basically an issue with insurance coverage doomed the Region. When the Region was founded, competitive events were held on US military bases. These bases were considered part of the United States for insurance purposes, and therefore PCA coverage was extended.

Alois Ruf was a 25-year member of the Germany Region I left Germany in July 1964, and the club was still flourishing. I do know that it was a great club and, like the Maverick Region, offered many events and fellowship with great people who all loved the Porsche marque. The Germany Region was active for over forty years before its Charter was recalled by the PCA. Its demise has been well documented in PCA

After 9/11, for security reasons, access to the airbases was not possible. Events were being held on local German airbases. It appeared the Germany Region operated for a number of years like this, without our insurers, PCA, or ourselves realizing there could be any problem with the coverage. PCA renegotiated their insurance coverage at the start of 2008 and discovered the problem. No solution could be found, and it was “game over” for the Germany Region of the PCA.

Atlanta Dreaming: The New Porsche Experience Center By Pat Frye

Photos courtesy of the Author

I

’m a new transfer member from the Florida Suncoast Chapter, where I enjoyed my ‘03 Boxster S and attended a few Autocrosses and DEs at Sebring International Raceway. I relocated to the Dallas area for work last year, and my Boxster was a casualty of a smaller garage and logistics. I decided a newer Cayman might be a better fit for North Texas. I found a car I wanted in Atlanta, and Abraham Caracheo, a Porsche Brand Ambassador at Hennessey Porsche in Roswell GA, offered a private tour of the new Porsche Experience Center / Porsche Cars North America corporate offices in Atlanta – very near to the airport, not yet open to the public, and clearly too good to resist.

Full restoration center in the lower level ing a feel of what high tech was to come. Inside, on the lower level, is a Porsche custom restoration center, where they will perform whatever level of “one-of-a-kind” restoration work on your car that your wallet can afford. The building is full of graceful curves, similar to those found in our cars, which also serve to focus your attention outwards toward the 1.4-mile test track, of which there is a large model in the main lobby.

Before I took delivery of my ’14 Certified Pre-Owned 981 Cayman S in late May, we spent the morning at the Porsche Experience Center. The 27-acre $100 M site features an amazing building with “uber” modern architecture and a cool test track. But the first thing to get your attention is pulling into the parking garage and seeing that at least half of the cars in the garage are Porsches of all models and years. Cool Beans! A 918 Spyder was positioned by the underground entrance near multiple charging stations, provid18 October

Look up for the 918 sculpture grill badges; a fitness center; multiple conference rooms; and, unique objets-d’art to capture one’s attention. In short, it qualifies as visual and sensory overload.

Model test track in the lobby

Pat and his 2014 Cayman S

There are many other really interesting features, such as a large design center to help a customer spec out a new car; an accessory/apparel store with all of those specialty items one never seems to see in person; a bistro, “Restaurant 356,” with attractive fare; a fascinating Porsche car history timeline with models of each of the cars; Porsche historical archives; a collection of Porsche

There are numerous rally, race and special edition cars inside and out, including an original 917, all the way to the new Le Mans winning 919 Hybrid race car. The day I was there, Porsche was producing a film in the museum (numerous stars were there participating, including Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson) and it was closed off to visitors, but there was still an abundance of things to see. There were a number of special edition cars, such as a PCA special edition custom blue 911S, a ’16 Boxster Spyder and a special edition two-tone extended length Panamera.

Outside, on an elevated drive overlooking the track, was a parking area with three beautiful silver Porsches: a Cayman GTS, a 918 and a Panamera. From that elevated area, one has a spectacular view of the track where, on this day, a group of dealers from the northwest U.S. was driving the stable of all of the Porsche models in what looked to be a really fun experience. Multiple sections of the track, designed to emulate a traditional road course, include a low friction handling circuit, a circular

Three GT silver Porsches

skid pad, and an off-road course designed to demonstrate the often untapped capabilities of the Cayenne and Macan, which I understand to be more than challenging to any SUVs. The driving experience is available for purchase by owners, is priced at different levels, and is designed to provide custom tailored driving education experience for novices to experts, on whatever specific areas the individual wishes to improve.

Other Maverick members have also made this trek to the Porsche Experience Center: The Porsche Driving Experience in Atlanta was the best birthday present and an awesome learning experience. My favorite parts are the launch control and the kick plate. One allows you to feel the awesome power of a finely crafted, powerful car and the other is a confidence building exercise that showed me how to handle the car on slick surfaces. After my time on the track I’m more confident in my skills while driving any of my three beloved Porsches. Daphany Prewitt

View from the porch of the Carrera Cafe After reading this, I hope I’ve piqued your interest, as there are few places to see the score of all things Porsche on full display, plus the ability to take some customer designed driving classes to hone your skills. Remember, it’s only a two-hour flight . . .

I visited the PEC in May as Porsche’s guest for their new Forever Amazing marketing campaign. And it was truly a Forever Amazing event. The PEC is a worldclass facility as one would expect from Porsche. All in attendance were able to drive nearly the full range of cars on the track - 911 Turbo S, Carrera GTS, Cayman GTS, Panamera GTS, Macan Turbo, and Cayenne. And we each got a thrilling ride-along for hot laps in a GT3. To top off a wonderful day, I received a call from my sales rep at Porsche Plano while I was at the event, and he informed me that I was confirmed for an allocation for a Cayman GT4. It was a Perfect Porsche Day. Edward Chin

Concours on the Avenue: Prepping for Monterey Car Week By Andy Kay, Region Concours d’Elegance Chair

M

onterey Car Week and Concours d’ Elegance this year was August 10-16, 2015, part of which was the Carmel-ByThe-Sea Concours on the Avenue, held Tuesday, August 11. Sixteen blocks of downtown Carmel-By-TheSea showcased over 175 collector cars from multiple marques for years 1940 through 1973, with Porsche and Ferrari thru 1989. Maverick Region member Roger Tyson and his 1988 Porsche 928 Club Sport SE was one of the fortunate few whose application was accepted. About the car: only sixteen 928 Club Sports were built for racing purposes. Porsche added some Special Equipment to add comfort, like air conditioning, a radio, and different seats to create the Porsche 928 Club Sport SE. Only 42 were built, and only for the UK. Roger believes less than half are still road-worthy. This all-original 928 CS/SE is the only one in the United States, and was imported within the last two years. It is a Single Stage Guards Red, right hand drive 5-speed manual transmission with less than 64,000 miles. Roger asked me to be his Project Manager, responsible for preparing this 928 for this very special “invitation only” event. Since this is the most prestigious Concours d’ Elegance I’ve been associated with, I thought I would share my eight-day Detail including my paint correcting, perfecting, and finishing stages. I would be using only the finest car care products available: Griot’s Garage, of course! I hope you enjoy my journey, which started in June with preparing the car for the Concours. 22 October

Day 1, Thursday, June 25: I started off with an overall inspection. I needed to wash the 928 and strip the car of any old waxes and chemicals. I used Dawn as a mild stripper, and lots of different Griot’s Garage cleaning products. The Oil & Grease Cleaner and Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner really cut through the engine grease and grime. Both are pH balanced and recommended for engine cleaning. Long-handled brushes make wheel cleaning much easier. Then I moved to the engine compartment for a gentle scrubbing.

Photos by the Author ot’s. The Oil & Grease Cleaner and a 3-inch yellow pad did a great job. I would seal this area with Griot’s One Step Paint Sealant when I was done. The red single stage paint is really starting to POP.

Dirty pads, towels, and polish

Clean engine bay After blow-drying the car and engine bay, I pulled into my garage and started claying and polishing the hood with Griot’s Polish #1, #2 and #3. I used the Fast Cutting and Fast Finishing pads with Polish #1 and #2, and an Orange pad with Polish #3. At this point, I was still removing oxidized paint. I used Griot’s Micro Fiber & Foam Pad Cleaner to clean up my supplies and called it a day. Day 2, Friday, June 26: More Paint Correction! By the end of the day, I had used Griot’s Polish #1-4, four different pads from Fast Cutting to Fine Polishing, and more than a dozen Micro Fiber towels. The worst part of any detail job is removing tar from the lower rocker panels. Over the years, I’ve tried everything from Diesel fuel to Bug & Tar Remover, but once again, the answer is Gri-

Tomorrow I would be filling in low areas with Paint Glaze and then starting the five layers of Griot’s Best Of Show wax. Each coat needs at least two hours to set up. I allow eight to ten hours between each coat. On Monday evening, I would be removing all five layers at once with Spray-On Wax and the 6-inch orbital Polishing pads. While the wax is curing, I’ll have 2-1/2 days to work on other areas, like claying the glass, treating the carpet, leather, rubber, and vinyl, and polishing all the plastic lenses. The 3-inch Orbital will come in handy while cleaning under the hood.

Some of the many products used Day 3, Saturday June 27: First project of the day was to clay the 928 one more time with brand new clay;

I wanted to make sure there was no remaining polish before applying Paint Glaze. I applied the first coat of Paint Glaze by hand. While it was setting up, I started working on the interior. After about 30 minutes, I applied the second coat of Paint Glaze and let it cure for a few hours. The two coats of Paint Glaze would fill in any scratches that didn’t buff out from the four polishes I used the day before. By this point the two coats of glaze were rock hard. To aid in the removal, I used Spray-On Wax and a Micro Fiber towel and the Griot’s 6-inch Random Orbital with more Spray-On Wax.

Day 4, Sunday June 28: The Best Of Show wax had just come out of the microwave, so I headed for the garage to apply the third coat of wax. At this point, the wax was really building up. I had applied on the diagonal this time so I could see where I’d been. The creeper had been very helpful these past few days . . . and yes, I wax door jams and gas doors! I applied the fourth coat of wax that evening.

The creeper comes in handy

Paint glaze and hand applicator At 4:15 I was ready to apply my first of five coats of Best Of Show wax. But first I needed to go to the kitchen. Here’s a secret I learned from the creator and long-time friend, Richard Griot. Microwave the wax for about 90 seconds, 30 seconds at a time. Be sure the bottle is not full, as the wax will thin, and remember to remove the cap! The first coat of Best of Show was curing. I would put the second coat of wax on tonight and the third tomorrow morning. It had been another long, productive day.

Microwave the wax first

Day 5, Monday June 29: Time for the fifth and final coat of Best Of Show Wax. While it was curing, I spent the rest of the day finishing the interior. When it comes to Concours judging, this is where most points get deducted. If it didn’t come from the factory, it can’t be in the car, PERIOD! That means no garage door openers, sunglasses, aftermarket floor mats, cup holders, radar detectors, GPS units, cell phones, etc. Check the glovebox too. Nothing should be in here but the original Owner’s Manual in its original case. One final note; make sure all your interior Interior cleaning lights work. That evening, the new Griot’s Ultra-Premium Micro Fiber Towel and Spray-On Wax blasted through five coats of Best Of Show Wax with ease. These new PFM towels are Pretty Freaking Magical! The Paint Correction was finished and the results were beautiful! The paint was

soft, and the red was so incredibly deep. This was my very best work, and I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving than Roger Tyson.

Using Spray-On wax is the secret Day 6, Tuesday June 30: With the Paint Correction completed, I couldn’t cover it with a dirty car cover, so it was off to the laundromat with an eight ounce bottle of Griot’s Micro Fiber & Foam Pad Cleaner and 14 quarters for one of those jumbo washing machines. I let it air dry in the back yard. Day 7, Wednesday July 1: Another box from Griot’s arrived. It’s like Christmas in July, and I’m taking the day off.

Christmas in July! Day 8, Thursday July 2: Interior cleaning continued. The black leather was beautiful and really softening up. Moving to the cargo area was like opening a Time Capsule from 1988 -- everything was in perfect condition. There was an extra timing belt, Flat Tire bag, and Touch Up paint still in their original Porsche bags. I vacuumed one more time and applied and the Vinyl & Rubber Dressing. At this point, my contribution was almost finished. One last inspection, and back under the car cover it goes, until Roger picks it up! I’ll write again as my adventure takes me to Carmel, California. 23

Autocross Update: Lone Star Park AX #7 & #8 By Mark Schnoerr

E

vent #7 was the first of the combined PCA/Equipe Rapide events to have a PCA member as Event Master. This created an opportunity to design a course with some of the classic Porsche Club elements and to open up some more higher-speed sections of the Lone Star Park site. PCA Members stepped in nicely at this event. John and Gary Leto are now on the permanent tech crew to help speed the on-site tech process. Sigrid Schnoerr is the permanent Worker Chief and keeps that part running smoothly. I got to step in as the Event Master at this event.

Photo by the Author Three very fast 914s with four drivers fought it out in in class P10. Rick Gonzales brought his black 914/6 in just 0.2 ahead of Richard Reeves’ recently acquired fully-prepped 914/6 race car. Richard was sorting out some transmission problems that finally took him out. Rick is going to have a good fight with Richard. John and Gary had some issues with their, of late, great-running 914/4 race car. In class P7, it was a Cayman vs 911 battle, with Cayman driver Brian Ogle just ahead of Matthew Cords, followed closely by Ray Gibson in his very nice Carrera 4S. Ray found oversteer and got that 4S nice and sideways, maybe a little too sideways at least one time, keeping those guys honest.

Ninety-six entrants, almost 40 of whom signed up on site, were split into two groups for morning and afternoon runs. Everyone got six timed runs, and the first car off was at 10 am. Timed runs were finished at 3:30 pm, followed by the awards and PAX cash payouts. The Porsche classes have their own PAX cash payout now, so some drivers went home with something more than the Designer Award Shirts.

Stan Whitney and Su Brude run their beautifully prepared white Cayman S PDK in the SCCA Expert Class. What a great sounding and terrifically fast Porsche! They are going to the SCCA Autocross Nationals in September. Event #8 was on September 6, again at Lone Star Park. The nice grassy and shaded spectator areas were important on this unusually hot September day. It was a fast and challenging course that made good use of the elevation and camber changes. We had some close battles in the Porsche classes, some new members, and some first-time autocrossers. Sunday, October 4 is the PCA Time Trial on the 1.3-mile course at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. Let’s hope some of the fast Porsche track cars make this one to wrest the top time of the day away from the BMW that has been quickest the last few years. The next scheduled event is on Sunday, October 11 at Mineral Wells. Check the Equipe Rapide website (www.autocross.com) for updates. Come out to see the fun you are missing and play with us!

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

You may have heard this

before: “Good amateurs practice until they get it right; good pros practice until they can’t get it wrong” as attributed to E. Paul Dickinson, driving coach. Left unsaid is the difficulty of having enough time to practice even one thing to that level of perfection in any profession or activity. That’s one reason why Jerry Seinfield can’t hit a golf ball like Jordan Spieth while at the same time, Jordan can’t deliver humor quite like Jerry. I’m certain that each of us can pinpoint those areas in our work, home, hobby, and Porsche life where we are more amateur than professional. As members of the Maverick Region and PCA, most of us are closer to the professional side of the equation when it comes to the “people” relationships. It’s easy to experience the camaraderie of our club the first time you attend a Mav event of any kind. As we move to the “car” side of our Porsche club, the difference in performance level among our activities becomes more apparent - and I’m not simply talking about horsepower differences! Whether it’s driving in a rally, Sunday Drive or racing, wrenching, detailing, customizing, taking photos of our cars, or organizing social events like Cars & Coffee, each of our members has different levels of talent and expertise.

36 October

It seems to me that membership in the Maverick Region gives each of us a great opportunity to “practice until you can’t get it wrong” by actively participating in those events that fit our lifestyles best. Further, mimicking and talking to those members who are closer to that “pro” level in each event helps us move further along in our own continuum of improvement. Consider using this strategy to more quickly further your performance curve. When someone makes a suggestion as to how to do something better, whether it’s driving or detailing related, your ready reply might be, “Tell me why that’s better”. It’s important to understand the reasoning behind these suggestions. Too often, people blindly follow suggestions without following up with additional questions or understanding why the change will improve whatever activity they are involved in at the moment. If you are interested in getting a printed directory of all of the Maverick Region members, please look at the ordering information on page 7 to find out how to get your copy. Finally, November traditionally is when we hold our annual year-end celebration and charity event as well as the election of officers that we call Founders’ Day. This year that event is on Saturday, Nov. 7. See the ad on page 15 in this issue for details, and if you can’t make it, be sure to clip out the ballot on page 11 and mail in your votes for next year’s board.
