Rocky is active in Club Racing, Drivers Education, Autocross, and Time Trial. He also instructs at Drivers Education and Autocross, and Time Trial events. His daily driver is a Boxster S and his track car is an F class 968.

Mark drivers a Boxster S and has been a Maverick member since 1999. He is active with Drivers Education, Tours, and Social events, as well as with many Hope Shelter charity projects.

Michael has been a PCA member since 1982 He has been President, VP, editor, and membership chair in two other regions. He is on the DE staff and a member of the PCA National Club Racing staff. He owns a race prepared ‘86 944 Turbo.

The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, the Maverick Region President

A

dmittedly, there are those hardy souls that participate in a variety of competitive driving events all summer long, even in the Texas heat. Without question, it can stress both car and driver. Therefore, many people prefer to pursue cooler activities during July and August. The two month hiatus provides sort of an extended "mid-semester" break. Speaking personally, by the time September rolls around I am itching to get behind the wheel again and get up close and personal with the smell of melting rubber and super heated brake pads. Fortunately, for those of us in the Maverick Region, there will be lots of opportunities in September to go through the gears. We have autocross, time trial, the Palo Pinto tour and Drivers Ed events. The 914 SIG and the 928 Shark gatherings are also scheduled during the month. In late September lots of us will head out for Hallett for "Octoberfast", the Cimarron Region Club Race and DE. October holds more of the same. Of course, the social aspects of the club continue in full swing all summer long. (Thank goodness for air conditioning.) We have the usual monthly happy hour and lunch gatherings. Thanks to the good work of Dennis Chamberlain, Monda Degan and Mike Lockas we have had the chance to meet lots of new members. Hopefully we will be seeing these folks at some of the upcoming driving events as well. I know I'll be there!

Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield

W

endy Shoffit hosted the August 2005 MR Board meeting on August 1, 2005. The meeting might well have been called the August BoxsterFest based on the number of Boxsters parked in front of her house. The August meeting had the following 19 members in attendance: Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, Mark Gluck, Jeff Atkins, Michael Wingfield; Board Members: Bill Miller, Bill Dawson, Joel Nannis, Lanean Hughes, Dennis Chamberlain, Mike Brodigan, Chuck Machala, Ed Gross, Tracey Gross, Wendy Shoffit, Joe McGlohen, Matt Platts; General Membership: Jan Mayo, Clint Blackman, and Tinker Edwards. Rocky called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Before beginning the ‘round table discussion, he asked our newest attendee, Clint Blackman, to introduce himself. It seems Clint, a one-month-old member, had nothing better to do Monday evening than attend the Board Meeting, bringing his new 500 mile, 987 Boxster. Jeff Atkins: “We have money,” and presented the Board with the Second Quarter financial statement. Bill Miller: We have a Time Trial (TT) scheduled for September 10. It has been a long time since TT#4 in June. Bill Dawson: We have Driver Education (DE) events scheduled for September (9/17-18), and October (10/22-23). The October event will include the annual Instructor Clinic on Friday 10/21. Rocky requests that the Instructor Clinic focus on driving MSR in the clockwise direction. Bill indicates that he will take the suggestion under consideration. Joel Nannis: “We have members,” approximately 1,100. Rocky notes that our web site states we have 648 members and asks that the web get updated with the current membership count. Lanean Hughes: The ’05 Club Race (CR) generated about $7,000 in surplus. The CR review meeting has not happened yet, nor has a ’06 CR Chairman been identified. The Charity Autocross (AX) schedule for October 9, at the Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) bus lot does not yet have a sponsor for the lot rental fee. Plans include inviting other car clubs (Corvette Club, BMW Club, Miata Club) to participate in the Charity AX to benefit Hope Shelter. Carter Blood Care will set up a donation center at the Charity AX, for donations by friends and family. Hope Shelter has impending building expense estimates include $9,700 for lumber, $5,000 for trusses, and $12,500 for labor. The foundation is complete and the plumbing work donated. The shelter currently has approximately $83,000 in their building fund, the majority of which came from Maverick Region and member donations. Dennis Chamberlain: Has some new ideas for upcoming Slipstream (SS) Ads. Happy Hour (HH) at the Railhead Smokehouse in Colleyville had ~40 in attendance. The August HH (8/18) will be at Go Fish in Addison. Mike Brodigan: He is ready to invoice advertisers for the ’06 year. He expects some cancellations, but may be able to fill the vacancies from his waiting list of advertisers. Discussions continue with Steve Boyd (webmaster) about putting together advertiser links on the Maverick web site. Price estimates include an additional $100 per year for web links for renewed advertisers. Jan Mayo: Mentioned that the Maverick web site URL is changing, planned for September. The new URL will be http://mav.pca.org. The new URL will allow PCA National to collect web site statistics for the regions. Michael Wingfield: Bylaws review still considered and discussed. September DE registration is open and has received 56 applicants in three days. The October DE application appears in the August issue, with registration opening September 1. 8

Chuck Machala: The Z-car Club will hold their national event in the metroplex in June ’06. The Z-car Club wants us to run their AX, providing all necessary equipment (van, timing equipment, cones, operational staff, etc.). Rocky points out that we provided just the timing gear and an operator to the Jaguar Club for a $500 donation to Hope Shelter in the name of Maverick Region. Chuck will ask the Z-car Club to provide a $1,000 donation to Hope Shelter in the name of MR for the use of all the AX equipment. Wnedy, Jan and Lanean volunteered to help as staff for the Z-car Club AX event and maintain control over the MR equipment. Lanean and Chuck will investigate getting a contract for the equipment usage based on a suggestion from Clint. Chuck and Bill M. are still hoping to test some new Icom radios, at the September DE, before purchasing the new radios. Mark Gluck: All August events have insurance. Ed Gross: Discussing with Steve Boyd how to put the Goodie Store on the Maverick web site. Steve is currently building a Goodie Store Admin interface to enter/update products and prices. PayPal is still in the discussion stage. The Goodie Store was at the July HH, but items did not sell well. Tracey Gross: Goodie Store will be at the Post Parade Party (8/13) in hopes of selling the remaining Parade ’04 items. Looking at new inventory to include fall fleece jackets and helmet bags. The Holiday Party will be hosted by Bob & Clara Lewis. Jan Mayo: Encourages more Zone 5 participation, such as Hill Country Region (HCR) Porschedillo on October 1. Porschedillo information can be found on the HCR web site www.hcrpca.org. Would like to see more Zone 5 events listed on the MR calendar. Rocky asks about the status of Peter Schutz as a guest speaker (see June Slipstream minutes). Jan will follow up. Wendy Shoffit: AX#4 back in June had ~60 participants, and generated ~$800 in region surplus. The Las Colinas Photo Rally (7/23) had 9 entrants. The next photo rally is scheduled for 8/13 in the Grapevine area, and will end at the Post Parade Party location. The August Slipstream is printed and on the way to the mail house, thanks to extra time and effort by Kevin Hardison. Her PCA Enthusiast of the Year trophy is set out for all to see, and it is filled with Hershey chocolate candies! Joe McGlohen: Suggests the region consider making an award named for long standing member Roger Chaney. Wendy suggests it be a periodic award, perhaps for lifetime achievement. Bill D. suggests honoring Roger at Founder’s Day (11/12/05). Joe and Bill D. will investigate further. Rocky Johnson: The AX van needs an exhaust manifold, which is no longer manufactured. It may have to be custom built. The 914-SIG wants to use the AX van and equipment 9/1-4 for an AX at Mineral Wells. Since the SIG is a part of PCA, it may use the equipment at no charge. It is time to form a Nominations Committee for the ’06 officers. Joe asks the currently sitting officers who would not care to serve a second term. When no officers objected to serving,Wendy, Dennis, Chuck, and Lanean agree to be on the Nominations Committee. The October 6, Wings & Wheels event (not a Maverick event) was promoted on the Maverick Region message board Maverick member Jack Griffin will show several cars from his collection at the event. Bill M. needs to generate an ad for SS to sell the old radios. Would like the region to consider a single location for Board meetings. Lanean suggests Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. Lanean will investigate scheduling the October, November, and December Board meetings at Hackberry. Mike Brodigan will host the September Board Meeting at his home on Tuesday, September 6. Meeting adjourned at 9:24 PM.

Mark Vaughan was one of the new members in attendance. Mark has a 1984 911 Targa and a 1993 928. The location was good for Mark since he lives in Colleyville. Robert & Donna Byrd have been members since August of 2004, but this was their first happy hour.

e had around forty in attendance at the Railhead Smokehouse happy hour on July 21. We had some new members, but also several “not so new” members attending their first Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Monda event ever. Then there was Don Degan and Mike Lockas Osborne. Don has been a member since 1976, and he said this was his first event in ten years.

This month's article is on a Maverick PCA member Mark Wilson, or rather Mark Wilson's foot. Mark's foot has demonstrated great levels of achievement and has gotten Mark out of (and into) plenty of jams. Mark Wilson's foot is no stranger to controversy or mayhem, but Mark knows that when it's time to put something down, his foot is always there for him. That wasn't always the case. MH: Mark, I realize your foot cannot speak for itself, but perhaps you will be able to provide us a little insight on that in-step. It has been said that the foot provides the driver with the ability to accelerate, shift and brake. How important is your foot in this regard?

The 911 Waits...It’s Day Will Come

MW: Yeah, well Mike, I do appreciate your discretion. I am recovering from recent surgery on the right foot/ankle. The procedure is called Subtalar Arthrodesis. In laymen's terms, this is where the foot bone is in fact connected to the leg bone - with a screw. The Doctor tells me it was caused by years of running. I suspect however that the right foot was sneaking out at night and had an accident. Rumor is that it was seeing another foot. As you can tell, I'm still pretty sensitive about the subject. MH: I can see which foot is your favorite! We will keep that between us. Has there been a time when one of those hoofs got you into trouble you couldn't walk away from? “Rightie” Gets Put into Place

MW: Honestly yes, there was that incident in the ladies shoe department at Nordstrom's, but the statute of limitations won't run out for another 17 months. This is off the record, isn't it?

MH: Interesting, so as far as the left one versus the right one, do you find yourself favoring one over the other? Now before you answer, I am well aware of the argument "I love all my feet the same" as would a mother say referring to her babies, but we all know we have favorites. So, tell me, which one is your favorite? MW: Actually Mike, I think I'm safe in saying my left is the favorite. See, my right has always had a poor attitude and has constantly led me places I probably shouldn't have ventured. Yes, I fight tooth and nail with that foot. On the other hand, my left foot has always been much more compliant and willing to listen to reason. Sometimes I stay up late into the night having conversations with the left foot about politics, religion, food, podiatry etc. Overall though, I'm attached to both and plan to keep them around as long as there is a good understanding. MH: Well, I can see that you don't want to create any tension 10

MW: Well Mike, first my feet and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest. My feet are particularly happy during shifting and acceleration. American LeMans Series “Controversey at Infineon” By Bill & Marilyn Stafford

T

The Race: The flag dropped and as usual the Audi’s started to disappear into the distance. It was a relatively clean and uneventful race until the most significant “event” occurred in the ALMS LMP1 class with just 39 minutes left. Overall leader, Marco Werner in the No.1 car (Audi R8), came out of the pits and collided with Alex Figge (Corvette C5-R GTI) at turn 1. Werner continued on the track, but the collision caused his front right tire to lock forcing him back to the pits. Audi replaced the front wishbone in about 4 minutes; Werner went a lap down and never recovered. The collision caused the Corvette to spin off course and a few minutes later

he American Le Mans Series at Infineon Raceway this year was filled with a different type of controversy throughout the weekend. Although the outcome of the races has been predictable for a couple of years with the only suspense being “which Audi will win,” this race had the trappings of a schoolyard dispute.

Local Dallas Corvette racer, Lou Gigliotti in #28. comment that “I’ve never known the Audi team to want to crack cars or be overly aggressive,” causing groans to be heard throughout the Media Center. This is a kinder and more forgiving Robb Dyson than we have ever seen. Can there be an Audi in his future? Werner placed third behind Audi teammate, Frank Biela, and Emanuele Pirro in the No. 2 Audi R8. Andy Wallace (who beat out Werner for the pole, thereby raising some eyebrows in the Audi pit) with codriver, Chris Dyson (Lola EX257), finished second. Californian Liz Halliday and Clint Field won the LMP2 class in a Lola B05/40. This was Liz’s first win in ALMS. Liz has raced previously this year at Sebring and in Europe in the British GT series but figures that there are more opportunities for female drivers in the U.S. When asked about FIA racing, she commented that Bernie Eckelstone’s comments regarding women in racing were both “stupid and childish. If you prove yourself and respect the car, then are no problems being female.”

was forced to retire due to the crash. Werner contended, in typical Factory Driver-ese, that Figge took too tight a line around the turn and should have seen the Audi (which towers above the track to almost the height of the pit wall). According to Werner, “There was plenty of room on the right side” (which, at speed, would put your race line headed for the White Suits, the wrecker, and the boons). “I really don’t know why he hit me. He can’t go through me.” Figge, of course, not being paid by a mega-factory, had a different point of view. He suggested that the Audi’s “don’t need to be that pushy as they are the fastest cars in the field.” Surprisingly, Dyson Team owner, Rob Dyson, agreed with the Audi Team. He went so far as to

Ron Fellows and Johnny O’Connell (Corvette C6-R) won the GT1 class and became the first drivers to post 5 straight victories at the same venue and also won their 24th career race, both ALMS records. The Saleen S7R came in third with Terry Borcheller at the wheel. Timo Bernard and Romain Dumas driving the Alex-Job #23 911 GT3R took their third straight GT2 race in a Porsche 911. Former Porsche autocrosser, Randy Pobst is paired with relative newcomer, Ian Baas, in the other Alex Job Porsche #24. The SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT race also had its share of controversy. Early in the race, second and third place runners, Wolf Henzler (#55 Porsche 911 cup) and Leighton

Reese (#6 Corvette C6), battled side-by-side, bashing each other until on lap 9, they came together rather hard at turn seven. The incident caused flat tires on both cars, forcing them into the pits and neither of them recovered although Henzler did manage a 7th place finish. Also early in the race Tommy Archer (#1 Dodge Viper) had an incident with Max Papis (#16 Cadillac CTS-V). The incident meant a violation of Archer’s 2-race probation for another Cleveland incident, plus he was penalized 5 points, fined $3000 and had his probation extended. Local Dallas Corvette racer, Lou Gigliotti, won the race in his C6 ending a Corvette win drought that began after Mossport in 2003. Other support races such as the Star Mazda Championship provide an opportunity to see racers of the future. This year the series includes heirs apparent, Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal. Marco finished 2nd.

Tidbits: Frank Biela and J.J. Lehto rode their Harleys 3300 miles across America from Lime Rock to Infineon in sort of a Finnish “Easy Rider.” Watch for a Special on TV soon…“Big Buck Bikers Battle Montezuma” or something like that. The Maserati MC12, racing under special dispensation (and probably big bucks from Pirelli and Risi Competizione) in the GT1 class (it’s too long), ran well, finished 4th and nothing fell off. Support your local Racetrack. Imagine these two machines in your rearview mirror!

Las Colinas Photo Rally By Ed Gross

n July 23rd, Tracey and I participated in the Las Colinas photo rally. It was a great way to spend the afternoon, especially in July. We all met for the rally briefing around 2:00. OK, so we were a few minutes late, but that’s only because Tracey used to work across from the meeting point, Williams Square, and knew a “short cut” to get there. I don’t generally follow directions well, so let’s just say there was a shorter way to get to Mustang Square than the way we took. It wouldn’t be the last time on this day where I didn’t follow the navigator’s instructions. But this type of rally is really very easy, and very non-stressful, even if you can’t follow directions, or listen very well, or ….

April Dodd took their black on black 928S (more on that later). James Shoffit and his 8-year-old navigator, Jasmine, drove their white 911 C4 Cabriolet with the bike rack on top (also more on that later). Kevan Davis was driving solo – I wouldn’t think it would be much fun to do a rally without a navigator to argue with. The next two and a half hours were spent trying to find the clues and landmarks. There was plenty of time to cover and search the entire map area – you just have to be quick and efficient about it – and you really don’t have to break any traffic laws to do it (I’m not saying we did that, however). Tracey and I had found all but two of the landmarks in two hours, and spent the last 30 minutes searching for the last two. We found one as we were about to give up. We spotted it from afar, and if we had driven closer to the landmark, we would have seen the last one, also (maybe?).

All participants were given a 3 page hand out. The first page was a map showing the area of the rally, which was a relatively small area of Las Colinas, primarily centered around 114 and MacArthur. The next two pages consisted of 16 photographs of so called prominent landmarks within the rally area. They were certainly prominent if you knew where to look. Some of the landmarks could not be seen from the road, you had to decipher their locations from other keys in the photographs. The photos were the only clues you had to go by.

In the process of doing the rally, we saw lots of interesting things in Las Colinas. I knew that there were metal horses in Williams Square, but I didn’t know that Las Colinas also has metal cows. I didn’t see any other metal farm animals, however. One of the objects we were hunting for was a sculpture near the canal; it reminded me of a really large salt shaker. The 2.5 hours went by very quickly, and we were all happy to show up at Paciugo for the rally scoring and some great soft ice cream. Bill and Drew Campbell won the event with an incredible

score of 33 1/2 points (out of a possible 35 total). The rest of the results are below. In addition to rally results, I think there were some other notable items to mention. First, James Shoffit drove the event even though he wiped out on his bike earlier in the day (remember the bike rack?). In addition to wiping out, apparently his biking buddy decided to run over him after he hit the ground. Maybe James needs to find a better cycling buddy, but he drove the rally with large bandages on various parts of his body regardless, as well as having torn both rotator cuffs in his shoulders. I was most impressed by Steve and April Dodd, driving their black on black 928S. The AC wasn’t working in the car, and they knew it, but decided they wanted to drive their 928 regardless. In the middle of July in this area, that’s really wanting to drive your Porsche. Everyone had a great time. We’re looking forward to the next photo rally in August in Grapevine.

Autocross #4 - Making us think... by Jan Mayo

T

his was one of those deceiving courses. Walking it you felt like it would be longer than it really was. The first time around the course you felt like you were always a half a thought too late. Then the smart folks got ahead of the car and were reacting to the next action before the last one was done.

The first action was a tiny circle about 6 inches from the start line. OK, so that’s an exaggeration, but it DID feel that close. Some people were even staying in first gear. A tip from Charlie Davis was that I was not as aggressive attacking the circle as Ed was. How aggressive can you get in five feet? OK I’ll try it.

Easy to do, simple for the new folks, but if you set up right, Ed says, nearly flat out! So I tried it. WOW! ! What a ride. The next part was up for debate way into the wee hours of the following week. Again, upon walking it you felt like the option was a no-brainer. You could enter the long curving slalom high and wide (the”long” way) which gave you a faster exit to the finish line, or you could take the other option and take the shorter route which cut out the first cone and also kept you inside the curve. No Brainer = take the short cut even tho that made the finish a tad awkward. Watch the other drivers…. what were they doing? Many took the short route… some took the longer…. WAIT A MINUTE… the longer route WAS faster… Noticeably faster. Let’s try it. Yup feels awkward, nope, don’t like it. Wait a minute, look at the time. hmmmm OK, get out of the comfort zone and work it. For a course that averaged 35 seconds, this one took a lot of thought. Punch the circle, jab the slalom, hang on for the lefts, pray thru the curving slalom, flail thru the finish, breathe …. Whew, it takes longer to read the sentence than it did to drive the course. It was one of those fun, easy, thought provoking, hard courses that make autocrossing one of my most favorite activities. Thanks, Joel, for designing a great course.

The Fricks Go To LeMans By Jean Frick

W

hen we found out we were # 390 on the wait list for the Hershey Parade, we decided to be realistic – we looked at our “Do Before We Die” list and chose the 24 hour LeMans. We read the Slipstream article written by John Evans (Maverick member from Flint) after he went last year, and found out by e-mail that he was going again this year. We talked to Linda Bambina about the trip she and Alan made several years ago. Both conversations added to our excitement, so we started the months of planning, list making, sorting, organizing…all listed on a spreadsheet, of course.

We left DFW on June 15 at 5:50 pm. It was an overnight, straight-through flight to Paris (CDG) arriving at 10:00 am on June 16. We found our way to the train station at the airport and waited around for about 3 hours, had lunch, Dave took a picture of an abandoned suitcase right before the police detonated it (never a dull moment). We boarded the 1st class coach at 13:37 (had to get used to the 24 hour clock) and finally arrived in LeMans at 15:10. So far, so good. We waited in line for a taxi to take us to the Campanile Hotel, our home for the next four nights, and we arrived there at 16:30…about 25 hours after we left DFW.

Many folks walked the pit area looking over the cars, most of which were in pieces for the final “shakedown” before the race. After checking out the cars we walked to the most famous spot seen on TV, the Dunlop Bridge, where Dave enjoyed taking pictures from different angles. By now we were ready to go back to town for the Parade, so we went out front to stand in line for the bus. The purpose of the Parade is to introduce the driving teams, made up of three drivers (or “pilots”) for each car. They would share the driving time for the 24 hour period. All the teams were riding in antique cars from the museum. Each car was preceded by a motorcycle with an attractive female passenger holding a sign with the names of the “pilots” and their car make and number. Things came to a complete stop as fans rushed up to the cars for autographs. Several marching bands and dancing groups were mixed in, and a few actual race cars. The Parade was still going strong, but after 2 hours we were tired of standing and very hungry, so started looking for a place to sit down and eat. A cold beer improved things a lot, as we visited with a nice couple from Denmark. Tired of the bus routine, we decided to take a taxi back to the hotel. We are convinced there are only 3 taxis in the entire city, but we finally got one and arrived back “home” at 10 pm. Tired, but happy.

Dave and Jean taking it all in. The French bus system leaves much to be desired. On Friday, June 17th we started out right after breakfast to ride to “the Circuit” and have a look around. We started waiting for Bus #17, but each bus driver stopping by told us something different in broken English and gestures. We wound up going across the street to catch Bus # 4 into City Center. Again, conflicting directions, so we went to the bus station office, and a man who spoke NO English. We finally found Bus # 6 – that driver didn’t understand us either, but he took us to the end of the line and then we walked 3/4 mile to the track entrance, arriving about 10:30. There was quite a crowd assembled already, since the pit area is open to the public the day before the race. We walked past the bleachers and through a tunnel to the pit side, where we met some blokes in Club Arnage T-shirts. These were the Brits who invade France for the race each year. One of them told us it was his 8th time to come to the race, and that all of the estimated 100,000 visitors from the UK think it’s mighty nice for France to throw this party for them every year! John Evans stayed in their camp last year and had told us that he would bunk with them again this year. They gave us directions to the Champagne Bar and invited us to join them when they all meet there about 9 pm Saturday night, during the race. We found our way up to Suite # 117, the Porsche AG office in 24

the grandstand, and visited a bit with Mr. Kristen and Mrs. Schuh. Their window on 2nd floor looked right out on Pit Row and to the track beyond. We were directly above the spot for the Porsche # 71, which later won its class. If you remember, June was a hot month everywhere, and especially so walking around in the sun. I’ve never seen so many men without shirts except at the beach. Many of the shirts became headbands to absorb the sweat. And everyone cooled off with a cold beer.

Saturday, June 18th – the race starts today at 4 pm, but there is much activity before then. At breakfast we visited with two gentlemen from Audi (which had a HUGE presence at the track) and they gave us a ride to Lot 12 where they had a parking pass. Traffic was really heavy. We watched the Le Mans Legend Car Race, where we saw some really neat cars and watched as 75 year old Sterling Moss, a racing legend, drove a 1952 Jaguar C-Type to 5th place. The crowd was really picking up, and everyone was carrying chairs and beer. After sitting on the ground and on the curb to rest, we purchased a couple of three-legged stools, which turned out to be a very wise investment. It was still hours before the race would start at 4 pm (pardon, I mean 16:00). As the crowd grew much larger during the day, the temperature continued to rise. By race time it was 95 degrees F, with high humidity, so we got no break from the Texas heat. Finally it was time to “start your engines.” And they all started, except for one Audi – it just wouldn’t start. We had our little radio tuned to the English announcers so we could tell what was happening. Since the track, including some public roads, measures about 8 1/2 miles, the laps are very lengthy. Right away the two LMP1 Pescarola cars were ahead – one driven by S. Loeb, Rookie of the Year. The Pescarola cars were 5 seconds a lap faster than the other cars. A Lola started overheating. Aston Martin is falling behind. # 17


After a couple of hours we visited a WC with separate facilities for men and women – it was the old “squat over the hole” routine that they have in France. I was glad I brought my own TP. We found a place to get pizza, but it was so hot, and no breeze. We went through the tunnel to the other side, and now have the sun to our backs. Lola # 39 dropped oil, so they were under yellow for awhile. Had to put a new wing on #16. As flags turned green, the pace car was still in control when the leaders were coming up on it. # 17 had a run in with a Panoz, then tires and brakes got cold. # 58 still ahead in GT1. 15 mph difference in Audi and Pescarola. # 30 leading LMP2. In case you thought the entire crowd came to watch the race, well, not quite. This is the largest party I have ever seen. At every turn folks are gathered together, laughing and drinking and having fun. And now, it’s time to meet folks at the Champagne Bar. We saw John Evans right away, and some guys we had met yesterday. Here was a very large group of Englishmen, overflowing with beer and champagne and frivolity. We were made to feel very welcome. Everyone knew someone who lives in the US…a fellow named Chris even had a buddy who works at Lockheed Martin. John was concerned about where we would sleep – let’s see, George had an extra tent, John had ground cover and a blow-up pad and pillow, Andy had a blanket and pillow. They got it all together and about midnight Dave helped set it up in the “Liverpool Boys” Campsite. Their main tent, used for meals and visiting, had a Texas flag prominently displayed. It was courtesy of John, who stayed with them last year and brought them the flag as a gift. There were several “bottle sculptures” around…shapes created from hundreds of empty beer bottles. We finally laid down about 1 am, but what Linda Bambina told us was certainly true – you CAN’T sleep because the cars never stop. The sound of the cars, the popping of brakes, shifting of gears, and helicopters went right through the earplugs. At least we closed our eyes and stretched out for about 5 hours. We were grateful for the hospitality of our new friends. We got up about 6 am and walked to the tribunes (bleachers) with the big screen. Carrying our 3 legged stools, we could stop anywhere there was a bit of shade. Dave brought croissants and some strange liquid they called coffee. It was really loud right beside the track, but the standings were listed frequently on the big screen, so we could catch up with the leaders. Then Dave wanted to take the bus to the Mulsanne Corner, so we waited about 30 minutes across from the main gate. When the buses finally arrived, it was like a Chinese fire drill, only the drivers wouldn’t let anyone board. They moved around and got several double buses lined up and then finally let the tired and hot passengers on. Quite a few got off at Armage, but the rest rode on to Mulsanne. It was VERY LOUD, a straight after a sharp curve. Dave wanted to take pictures here because you’re

on a hill and can see over the fence. The cars have to slow to about 40 mph to make the curve, so it’s easy to get a clear shot. Someone said it was a good location for night pictures – as the driver puts the brakes on hard, there is a red glow from the brakes.

Pescarola pits for fuel and goes from 2nd to 8th. Leader # 16 into pits for fuel and Dome # 5 takes lead, with an Audi in 2nd and 3rd. Porsche # 71 leading in GT2. Now Pescarola is ahead again – ahead by 1 minute in 12 laps. They kept giving updates about the # 8 Audi that was not able to start, and now it must get on the track before 5 pm, or have to scratch – finally they did get started, just in time.

The esses du Rouge. It was a wooded area, and the shade was most welcome. A large number of folks took the opportunity to stretch out on the grass for a little nap. By now only about 3 hours of the race remained. We rode the bus back and found a bite of lunch and more important, cold beer. There were places to eat everywhere, but the tables were all filled with so many people. Out come the three-legged stools again, and we could even move them to the shade – who cares if we eat off our laps? I waited in a cool spot while Dave went back to the “Liverpool Boys” camp. Our tent had been too damp to take down in the early morning, but we had folded the things we used and left a note of thanks. Now he got the tent put away and thanked George properly. It seems all we have done since 10 am the day before is walk and stand and walk and stand, always looking for a spot of shade. But now the end is drawing near. What was so surprising is that people just kept coming in the main gate. Huge crowds of people. I guess they were just coming in for the finish and all the excitement afterwards. Well, after several mishaps and with one of the leading cars off into the woods, we finally had the winners, and the USA did quite well. Audi USA won LMP1, Corvette USA won GT1, Porsche USA # 71 won the GT2. Audi came in 1st even though their speed couldn’t match that of some of the other cars -- they were just SO dependable. No problems, and their pit stops were “fuel – fuel – tires” –-- “fuel – fuel – tires” – just like clockwork. Their average time in the pits was 28 seconds, while the average Pescarola time was 58 seconds. Well, we took a cab back to the hotel and had a SHOWER and a NAP. We didn’t leave for Germany until 7 pm the next day, so it was time to catch our breath. But we had a great time and loved every minute of it – even the bus disasters. As an engineer, Dave could give them a few suggestions to make transportation easier for their foreign guests, but knowing the French, they wouldn’t listen. From here we go to the RUF Factory in Pfaffenhausen and then take the Porsche Backstage Tour in Stuttgart…what a wonderful way to spend retirement!
