My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Slipstream Managing Editor arade has come and gone but the pictures and the memories remain. What a rush! Both figuratively and literally. The head rush of seeing a gazillion Porsches of all shapes, sizes, models and colors is awesome. And new or old every Porsche has its very own distinctive sound. At Parade you get dizzy as you react to the sound, constantly turning to see who/what is coming or going. With a new Parade location every year it’s fun to see how quickly you can maneuver to all the places you want and need to go (Goodie Store, Registration, Banquet locations). This year everything was smooshed into 5 days where last year it was 6 and previously it had been 7. That created the literal rush. Conversations with old friends were rushed because both of you were headed to some event or activity. Afternoon events were rushed so you had time to get gussied up for dinner. And there was a dinner/award presentation every night. No room to explore the area or sample local cuisine. I hope this smooshing will change. I missed seeing and visiting with a lot of friends because there was no time. Speaking of rushing . . . The end of the year is on roller skates heading this way at a very high speed. September’s DE, October’s Charity AX and Concours, November’s Founders Day and December’s Christmas Party and much more. Watch the event calendar so you can pencil in the upcoming activities and not miss anything. A new activity that’s about to be in the works is another Dyno Day. Travis Howard thought that sounded like a good
P
thing to have so “Viola!” he’s in charge of scheduling one. Stay Tuned. Over the year there have been some subtle changes in Slipstream. Every new Editor takes that liberty to add his or her own touches. One of the changes you probably won’t see is the extension of the Slipstream Staff. Or at least I hope there will be an extension. We’ve grown - substantially. And there are pieces of the magazine that can be done remotely, then combined later into one cohesive book. We’re working on a way to do that. If you have the desire to be a “little” involved but without taking a huge leap, let me know. I’d love to add you to the team. If you didn’t know, there already is a team working in the background. Since he was editor, Matt Platts has “pinked” the electronic copy, taking out the previous month’s articles in preparation for the new month’s information. For the first part of the year Mike Kuhn helped me by preparing photos and doing the Trivia page. For more years than I can count Andy Mears has been our liaison with the Post Office, most recently facilitating the change from the Dallas to the Fort Worth Bulk Mail Center. Proof readers Tracey Gross and Tinker Edwards nit pick the issue for me before anyone else sees it. Lisa Steele keeps our advertisers happy and their ad copy updated. Speaking of ads Dennis Chamberlain and Mark Gluck have been providing the beautiful upcoming event ads. If anyone was depending on my creativity here we’d have a real problem. And always at my elbow is Wendy Shoffit with tips, tricks, advice and often physical presence helping get the book prepared. But there’s plenty of room for more. And I welcome anyone with interest.

Please help us to keep growing! 4
Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President ell Wendy, Jasmine, and I just got back from another Davis and Davis Rally. Teri and Charlie make a wonderful team for these lighthearted, fun, rallies. This last one was at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, so in addition to having a blast with fellow Porsche people, we also got a little bit of culture. Which I desperately need!
W
Charlie took the photographs, and Teri set up the sheets and did the timing and scoring. This was a Photo Rally which is kindof like a scavenger hunt where you go and find the artwork shown in the picture. Charlie is very tricky with those, so it took a lot of work to figure some of them out. There was a lot of camaraderie and helping each other out, since we were in such a relaxing atmosphere. Everyone got every answer right, so it came down to who got the answers the fastest. There are other photo rallies where you have to drive to find the things you are looking for. There are no specified courses for the photo rallies – you just wander around until you find everything. Or time runs out! Another type of Rally is the Tulip Rally. I don’t think we have had one of those in a few years, but it is a Time Speed Distance rally where you get small diagrams of each intersection you come to, directing you through it. These small illustrations often look like Tulips, thus the name. The goal for these is to go the speed specified in the instructions, find all the turns, and complete the rally at
the right time based on when you left. That’s where the time, speed, and distance come into play. The traditional Porsche Club TSD Rally (like the competitive one at Parade) is more tricky – you have a set of instructions and things to look for to guide your path rather than diagrams of intersections. The goal is the same – arrive at the perfect time based on when you left. Charlie and Teri put a lot of effort into these rallies, and they have been pretty well attended this year. If any of these sound like fun, send an email to Teri at rally@mavpca.org, and let her know what you would like. She is also asking for help with ideas and initial layout of Rallies. Typically we look for interesting roads and scenery (could be city or country). If you are interested in helping out – she can fine tune the details and the timing, let her know at the above email address. Other job openings I should mention are Editorial Assistance. Familiarity with a computer is required – and not much else. We can do the on-the-job training. We are moving towards using Adobe InDesign to lay out Slipstream now so we can use both Macs and PCs more efficiently. If you have InDesign experience,WE WANT YOU. So if you think you can help out in ANY way – and there are lots of ways to help, some that don’t require much time at all, please let Jan know at editor@mavpca.org. She will love you forever! We have had a few shifts in the board as well – Dennis, who has given us about a thousand Happy Hours now, is turning over the reins to Monda Degan and Mike Lockas. And we have a new Calendar Person to help us keep all our calendars (web, slipstream, events, etc) straight – please welcome Robyn Howard! We also have a nominating committee consisting of Wendy Shoffit, Jan Mayo, and Travis Howard. If you want to run for any elected position (President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer), please let them know at nominating@mavpca.org. Crickets ? All I can hear is Crickets ? I haven’t heard many reports from the lunches, except the Lewisville one. Hey, if ANYONE is going to ANY of them (besides Lewisville), please write me at president@mavpca.org if you haven’t figured out the pattern by now. The hot season (can you call it that since it took so long to break 100 degrees?) is almost over, and our driving season is about to get started and finish off with a bang. We have an AX/TT weekend coming up on Sept 15/16 in Mineral Wells and our Season Finale Charity Autocross is on Oct 14th at Texas Motor Speedway. The DE season is going to be rolling again with Drivers Education events at Motorsport Ranch in September and October so you can get your skills up to try out Eagles Canyon in November. They have been doing a lot of work there to get the track ready for us, and we can’t wait to try out the new track. And Founders Day will be on November 10th at a place called Austin Ranch in Grapevine. Stay tuned for more details. Come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis August Board meeting. In attendance: James Shoffit, Wendy Shoffit, Jan Mayo, Teri Davis, Charlie Davis, Christy Dominick, Denny Payne, Lisa Steele, Bob Kuykendall, Joel Nannis, Colin Graidage, Mark Gluck, and Travis Howard. James called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM. He then declined to comment, preferring to save his remarks until the end of the meeting. He did introduce Colin as our new DE Chair. Colin’s first report was short and sweet: All critical positions are filled. Joel chimed in and said we are possibly looking into a night DE at TMS for next year. Denny continues to update the website. He needs event chairs to contact him via e-mail to ensure the website has accurate information about their events. Wendy took this opportunity to tell Teri that her rally on the 18th is not on the website. She also said the results of the last rally are also not there. She will send everyone a list of what needs to be updated on the website. We discussed whether the Club Race page should be pulled or left as it is. This led to a discussion of the DE ad for Slipstream. Wendy mentioned that submitting a word document with embedded photos was problematic for use with Quark. Bob K suggested that DE ads should show more street cars and not so many race cars. Colin promised to have better pictures next time. At the moment we’re looking for DE pictures. Someone suggested that Dennis Chamberlain might have some. Christy asked about artwork for the Selcer trophy. Jan had it. She will scan it and send it to Christy. Someone suggested we should list all the past Selcer winners on the website. Christy said we needed do a Goodie Store ad and wondered what size? Jan suggested both a full and half page ad be produced. Lisa suggested we have several tiers of advertisers, to make it easier to locate important sponsor’s ads in prominent places. We clarified that all Slipstream advertisers get website ads too. Lisa said she was ready to send invoices for 2008 Slipstream advertising and wondered if we were happy with ad rates. We weren’t. Bob K mentioned that he thought that we had agreed to bump ad rates. Joel made a motion that we raise the ad rates 15% without a second. Wendy made a motion that we increase ad rates 20% and it passed unanimously. Bob K passed out copies of our quarterly financial report. He explained that the apparent loss of $26,000 was a bit misleading. First, $10,000 was the loss from the recent Club Race. Much of the rest is due to our having to make deposits on the venues for future events (AX, TT, and DE). Lastly, we bill our advertisers on a yearly basis, which is pending. He insists that our financial standing is not nearly as dire as it appears, and that adding a third fall DE should help our cash situation. Travis reported that tech inspection has been slow this month. He inquired if we have ever had a Dyno Day? We have, but it has been several years. We discussed having one again. 8
Mark said he will start laying out ads, real-soon-now. Teri reported that the walking rally of the Nasher sculpture center is almost ready. Bob K announced his company, the Beck Group, will sponsor the event, absorbing the $8.00 entry fee. A standing ovation ensued. Joel thinks we have over 1300 members, but he didn’t seem too sure about this. He announced he had over 61 registrations for the September DE. He further reported that Joe McGlohen has resigned as Safety Chair. Bob Benson is the new Safety Chair for DE’s. Darron Shaffer continues as safety chair for AXTT. Charlie brought the Truxster insurance and license renewal paperwork and gave it to Bob K for payment. Jan asked about the September Board Meeting. We had decided to have it on Thursday instead of Tuesday, due to the holiday. She needed ads. She mentioned that without a sponsor the charity autocross would probably lose money, somewhat defeating its purpose. Wendy wondered if Keith can get us a sponsor? Wendy made a motion that the region purchase a copy of Adobe InDesign (which is a $199 upgrade from PageMaker). The motion passed. Jan again stressed that she needs Parade stuff. She is looking for one article per major event at the Parade.
James, after making us wait two hours, only announced that the winter National Board Meeting was scheduled for February 2. The location has not yet been decided. James adjourned the meeting at 8:55 PM.

Peparing Your Car for a Maverick Concours d’ Elegance by Bob Bianconi
Tips and Tricks from Our Judges ur May@Mayo’s Concours event drew lots of interest and participation. The cars were well prepared and were separated only by a few points within each class. So what’s it take to beat the car sitting next to you? That’s the idea, right? Well, read on. This is the first of 2 articles on Concours car preparation. This article will explain some common exterior preparation mistakes as seen by our judging teams. A future article will discuss preparing your interior.
O
So, with microfiber towel (and beer) in hand, follow some of these tips and tricks from our judging teams and you’re almost guaranteed to… have a really clean car. And, maybe even collect a trophy at our Fall Concours.
Exterior Paint Waxing is good: too much wax is bad. After you apply a nice coat of wax, go back and look for wax buildup between body panels, on door/hood edges, around the Porsche crest(!) and on rubber trim. Use your towel or even a few Qtips to wipe away excess wax. (Note: after a beer or two, this may actually become good therapy). This doesn’t take long and it may make the difference between first place and second. Judges will always look for wax buildup in nooks and crannies. Another common mistake: Many folks spend all of their time putting a nice finish on their paint to the exclusion of the rest of the exterior. Pay attention to things like smudgefree glass, clean the visible portion of your brake calipers, clean the gas cap area and wipers/blades and don’t forget you’ll want bug-free license plates. Check out the judging guidelines on the Maverick Concours page for a list of things the judges look for (see link at the end of the article). This list is really your best guide for car preparation. Quoting one of our judges…
right side up and continue with the cleaning. Next, wax them. 356 steel wheels are gray paint or chrome and take the wax well. Fuchs mags with flat black areas should not be waxed but the polished portion can be. Wheels painted body color take wax as well as the rest of the paint. While the wheels are off, touch up the lug nuts if needed.

News Bite: Fall Concours Scheduled for Saturday October 13th!
Paint Chips You may lose a point or two for untouched-up rock chips. Use a tooth pick and let a tiny drop of paint flow into the chip through capillary action. Touchup techniques could be an entire article unto itself. Better yet; go to the carcare-online website for everything you ever wanted to know about paint touchup (see the “How-To” link on the left)
Trim Make sure your rubber trim has a deep black uniform look to it. A number of products are available to turn that washed-out trim back to black such as Back-to-Black, Vinylex, etc. Got a white wax residue on your black rubber trim? Rub some peanut butter on it! Betcha the residue disappears.
Wheels Wheels are easy. Take them off, lay them face down on the lawn, scrub everything in sight with strong soap (Dawn dish washing detergent again) and a stiff brush. Flip them 13

My Parade - A Kid’s View by Jasmine Shoffit - age 10 really clean and pretty, but one of my favorites was a green one with a smiley face on the front. I took a lot of neat pictures of cars. You might even see one of my pictures here. That night was the Concours banquet, so that meant babysitting for me and the rest of the kids. It was pretty nice. It had a movie, two laptops, Legos, a video game, and snacks and drinks. Most of us just played hide and go seek. I wish I could have done the slot cars during the babysitting, but we weren’t allowed to unless we were accompanied by our parents. But they were having a long boring fish smelling dinner instead. We were pretty lucky to have pizza!
thought the San Diego Parade was really cool. I’m sure the next one will be good, too.

On the drive there we went through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. It was really cool. There were a ton of bats and cave swallows that live there. When we were waiting for the bats to come out, we kept looking at our watches wondering why they were so late. My dad finally realized that he forgot about the Time Zone change. It turned out we were one hour behind! The caverns were really cool and deep. It was very humid and slippery. We spent the night in El Paso. The hotel was very confusing. There were two towers and paths that connected between them. Odd numbers in one building and even numbers in the other. We met up with quite a few people there. Our Author When we got to San Diego on Friday, we were pretty tired, so we checked in and went to our room. I have to admit I actually thought it would be nicer. Oh well, we can’t always get what we want. The next day we checked out the mall. It was really cool. We then got registered for Parade. Then in the evening we had dinner at a restaurant in the mall, called the Crocodile Café. We got dessert at the Cheesecake Factory. The line was out the door and down the street! Sunday while my mom worked in registration, my dad and I hung out. We met a really cute dog n a m e d Bullw inkle. Then later in the day, we had the We l c o m e Party. Since most of us kids didn’t exactly like Smiley Face the German food they had, there was a special kid’s area. No adults allowed, unless they had a little kid. On Monday it was the Concours. My dad had to get there earlier to work, so my mom and I slept in and went there later. It was very hot and sunny outside and unfortunately for us, we forgot to put on sunscreen and got major sunburns. The cars were

To me, the most hectic part of going to Parade is the packing and the drive there, but mostly the packing because it’s hard to pick what outfits to pack and all the shoes and accessories that go with them. But this trip was a little bit cooler because Geneva Spreen came with us most of the time.
Tuesday I hung out with Geneva and her mom while my parents rallied. During most of the time, there was an art class for kids. After we finished the crafts there, we went swimming. Geneva finally learned how to dive by some older kids who taught her how. There was also the ice cream social and the beach party that day. During the beach party, my parents won first place in their first Parade rally. Yay! The water in the ocean was very cold, but I waded in pretty deep anyway. The next day was the autocross. We had to get up super early for that because my parents had to walk the course. Why can’t Jasmine’s 1st in the Art Show! they just bike it like I did in the Kids’ Autocross? We went to lunch at Carl’s, Jr. They make a mean Teriyaki Burger! Yummmm! For dinner we went to Sea World. Most of the lines were too long for us to ride. The banquet dinner was really good, but I fell asleep in the middle of the award ceremony. Then my parents woke me just in time for the fireworks. They were so close I could smell them burning and I could feel the rumble when they were launched. On the last day, we went to the San Diego Zoo. There were so many different kinds of plants and animals. We saw a peacock that had escaped and was eating Doritos on the sidewalk. My parents went to the last dinner on the USS Midway, but Geneva and I stayed again at babysitting. We had fun. This Parade was an amazing experience that I will never forget. But, of course that’s just like all the other amazing Parades. I can’t wait ‘til next year!
Parade Tech Quiz by Teri Davis his Parade’s Tech Quiz was different. History questions were included and it also was shorter - 50 questions instead of the normal 100. This cut the time in half, but that didn’t matter much to me as five minutes was plenty to cover as much technical knowledge as I have. I spent another half hour trying to “logic” out some answers, but it comes down to either you know it or you don’t. Even those who are experts mis-guessed some of the multiple choice questions. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting exercise and I’m sure the gear-heads enjoyed it.

My First Parade Rally by Wendy Shoffit allowance (how RUDE). But, believe it or not, we actually SAW the scenery along the way! Southern California is spectacular. I highly recommend it.
hinking about our upcoming trip to Parade in San Diego, James and I decided several months ago that we would take our (new to us) 1983 911 SC to Parade rather than bring the race prepared 1978 911 SC. While we knew we were giving up the extra oomph we have become accustomed to for the autocross, we wanted to try something different and knew we wouldn’t last 4 hours in race seats with no a/c. We had never participated in the TSD rally in any of the six Parades we’d attended. Maybe we were too intimidated by everyone’s opinions of it, maybe we were afraid of getting too hot, or maybe we just couldn’t fit Jasmine in the back of the race car with the full roll cage. Whatever the reasoning, we didn’t do it until this year.
T
At the end of the rally, we had met our goal. Have fun, not get too mad, and avoid a divorce attorney at all costs. We tallied up our results and were happy with our calculated score… three hundred something. The lower the score the better. At every checkpoint you’re given your elapsed time. Your score is calculated in the hundredths of a minute that your time is off of the perfect time for that leg. One point is given per hundredth of a minute you’re either fast or slow. Zero is the perfect score. (We didn’t have any zeroes.) We turned in our scorecards, enjoyed the ice cream social, and hung out that afternoon by the pool with the Spreens while Jasmine and Geneva happily swam. It was a good day.

Many of you know that I’m a tad bit on the competitive side. Okay okay…a LOT on the competitive side… so far gone that I can’t even see the line! I get irritated with myself when I perform poorly at autocrosses and am not much fun to be around then. Few people in this world have seen me at my worst, “casually tossing” a pool cue when I miss a critical shot or nearly beating my doubles tennis partner to death for hitting me in the back during his serve… TWICE! So, when I have heard countless stories of couples wanting to kill each other after a TSD rally, I had pretty much figured I had set myself up for failure. I decided at that point to change my definition of success. If I made it through without getting upset and tried to enjoy myself, I would count that as winning. If we happen to do well in the standings… so be it. My mantra became, “The fate of the world won’t be decided if we win a trophy.” I scribbled it down on every paper in the rally packet to remind me, along with smiley faces. Yeah, I know it was cheesy, but it worked. Only one time did I get frustrated, but we worked through it. Teri accurately predicted two traps the rallymaster used and we didn’t fall for either of them! I also decided that I’d let James be the only driver and worry about Myra & Jerry Sutton going for their the speed changes and I Rally trophy would be the navigator, reading ahead and looking for the clues. James and I worked very well as a team and never felt completely lost. We did, however, lose track of what time of day it was in the middle during a break. You end up getting so wrapped up in minutes, half minutes, 100ths of a minute that the hour simply falls away. This prompted one of the more memorable exclamations of, “What the hell time is it?” Okay, so maybe there was a *little* more frustration at times. Sometimes it was more at the cars ahead, clearly going way under the designated speed (“MY sheet shows a CAST of 34… why are you going 27???) or at a stop light that went over the time 16

In preparation for our new adventure, we decided to take Teri Davis’ TSD rally school in June. She’d said that the focus would be on the Parade rally and she wouldn’t go easy on us, wanting us to be really prepared. Despite maxing out two of the three legs, we actually FOUND the one that most people didn’t and ended up taking first place. Amazing! It was not without a price, though, as I spent much of it thoroughly peeved after we maxed the first leg, when we fell for a trap and I thought we could have done better.
That evening was the beach party. We watched everyone make sand castles, nearly killed ourselves in the tug of war contest (for the Zone Challenge), and watched in amusement while some people participated in the Frisbee challenge. After the Mexican buffet dinner, everyone gathered around the clubhouse building to watch the rally awards. We stood around Myra and Jerry Sutton who asked if we’d seen the results. We hadn’t thought much about it, but decided we wanted it to be a surprise if we were in trophy range. We’d heard a few mentions of some high scores and realized our score wasn’t the worst! When they got to the unequipped class, they started counting down James & Wendy blown away at their around 12th place first 1st place Rally Award with the Suttons winning that trophy with a score of 902. Oh cool! Since I thought our score was in the 300s, we realized we’d won a trophy, but how good? The scores were dropping, the place was getting better and better. They finally called our names with a score of 261 and FIRST place (out of 72 cars)! I may be bad at math, but it turns out that I do okay at rallying. Excitement and elation followed as we went to the front to collect our trophies AND special Yokohama jackets. It was awesome! People try for years to get this coveted place and here we were able to achieve it our first time out. I think maybe we ought to quit while we’re ahead, as perhaps the only way to go from here is down. Nah… it was too much fun. Next time, we’ll even bring a digital watch so we don’t leave a minute late from a checkpoint because James can’t read which minute his analog watch is on! I wonder how low our score could have been if we’d had an accurate time piece? Hmmmmm… I guess we’ll have to find out next year in Charlotte. Is the scenery pretty there? I wonder. Why don’t you come with us next year and see for yourselves?! Remember to have fun and for SURE take Teri’s rally school! Thanks, Teri!

Happy Hour at Rio Mambo by Dennis Chamberlain et’s see – we learned last December that Rio Mambo is a Mexican Food restaurant. We learned that it was inexpensive, and that the food was good. And Judy Brodigan gave us a tip – to try the seafood quesadillas. This time, we assembled first in the bar and found that it is colorful and inviting. It was deja vu all over again - Ed and Mark Demas (the “car talk” guys) were there and they brought their wives Janice and Lara Tafel, Roger, Heather & Thomas Briggs Janet. Bob Lewis was there with his gadget of the month – his new iPhone. Roger Briggs was a new member attendee, and he brought his wife Heather, his sister Lara Tafel, and his son Thomas. Cheryl and Doug Koeppen were attending their first happy hour after having purchased a low mileage, Cheryl and Doug Koeppen 1996 arena red C2 in Boston. They drove it from Boston to Dallas and the owner said “what – you’re going to put all those miles on my car?” So we’ll definitely be returning to Rio Mambo in the future. And speaking of Mexican food, make a note of our September 20th location – Uncle Julio’s in North Dallas.
