any of you know that I have a track prepared 1989 944 Turbo S. It is a really nice car when it is not being temperamental. It is a pretty fast car and is very good looking. It’s named “Chauncey” after my nephew. Chauncey (the nephew) is a pretty good athlete. He is currently playing American football in Vienna Austria. (I know life is rough!) I named the car after him because they have three things in common. They are both fast, black, and handsome. Chauncey is pretty cool with the whole idea of having a race car named after him. Earlier this year as we were visiting family, Chauncey’s football team, The Vienna Vikings, won their way into the Euro/American Football Championship game. They were to play Berlin Adler for all the Euro marbles. As my wife and her sister were consuming a few glasses of wine, they decided that it would be great fun to fly over and watch Chauncey play in the Euro Bowl. Next step: Call a third sister (Chauncey’s mom) and talk her in to going. That was pretty easy. By about 2:00 am, they all had tickets. They were to converge in Chicago from Minnesota, Arizona, and Texas, and fly to Austria. Berlin won the game on a last second field goal. Chauncey played great. He intercepted 2 passes and scored two touchdowns. The three Sisters had a great time, Judy logged country number 40, (Slovakia) and I am a couple thousand dollars poorer. What a life! We spent the first weekend in August with about 40 of our closest P-car friends in Grapevine for our annual Round Up celebration. What a blast! The weekend was jampacked with all sorts of fun activities. The food was great and plentiful, the Elvis show was lots of fun, and all the car activities were 2

just right. Next year, we are having Round up at Possum Kingdom Lake. I am already looking forward to it. I would like to extend a big thank you to Susan and Tom Froehlich, Barb and Tom Minnella, and BJ and John Harvey for all the work and planning that made the weekend such a success.

Mav of the Month Our Mav of the Month is Bob Benson. Bob is the safety chair for all our driving events. That is a big job. Bob is the go to guy that takes care of all the corner workers, and makes sure all our events are run safely. He must be doing well, because we have never had a serious problem at our DE’s, and our Club race was “without incident,” the best kind. Bob also is the moderator for our chat boards, aka, the computer cop. For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Bob dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Bob, thanks for all you do. Mike

t’s another scorcher today at 104 degrees and I’m glad to be inside finishing up this month’s issue. I would like to apologize to each and every Maverick concerning the timeliness Slipstream has been reaching your mailboxes. Some months seem to go off without a hitch while others, well you know what I’m trying to say, they just don’t seem to get to you soon enough. There’s a lot that goes in to each issue’s 36 pages and for a bunch of volunteers, I think we do a great job. If anyone has input that could improve how things are done, please step forward and share your ideas. Drop me an e-mail at editor@mavpca.org. Also, as a reminder, if you ever need to find out any information concerning when, where, how much, how close, or just about anything else about an event, everything is listed on our Club web site. There’s everything you could ask for from our History and Bylaws to past issues of Slipstream to classifieds, Contacts, an on line Trivia contest, a Goodie Store, even Yellow pages where you can advertise to other Mavericks. So take advantage of what we have to offer and put a bookmark at http://mav.pca.org.

fter taking a month off from having a Board Meeting, we certainly had a FULL HOUSE for our August meeting. The 25 people present included Bryan Bell, Richard Bradley, Frank and Bobbie Briggs, Mike Brodigan, Chris and Ann Christensen, Jim Falgout, Pat Friend, Tom and Sue Froehlich, John and BJ Harvey, Travis and Robyn Howard, Tom and Barbara Minnella, Ed Mullenix, Joel Nannis, Christy Payne, Madhu Rao, James and Wendy Shoffit, Carey Spreen, and Lisa Steele. It was nice to see such a large group even though it did feel like “bring your spouse to the board meeting” night! The One and Only Mike Brodigan began the meeting promptly at 7:00 with the announcement that he has a BIG ROCK that needs to go to the Hope Shelter. Hopefully, he can find enough “man power” to get that rock where it belongs. Next item on Mike’s agenda was that the post office receipts have been going to Jan Mayo’s address. With Jan moving on to Colorado, the receipts will now go to our treasurer Jim Falgout.

Sue Froehlich passed out the schedule of events for Round-Up 2010 and asked if there were any questions. She gave a BIG “Thank You” to Barbara & Tom Minnella and John & BJ Harvey for ALL of their work they have done for Round Up. Barbara Minnella showed the group some of the wonderful door prizes. She had gift certificates, cool hats, and some awesome shirts…lots of GREAT stuff! Carey Spreen, announced that John Harvey came up with a nice Tour for Round Up and according the schedule of events the tour will end at RAC Performance with a tech talk from Hans. Joel Nannis reported that we currently have 1,117 members and 724 affiliated members for a total of 1,891 members of MAVPCA. He also announced that the September DE at Motorsport Ranch in now on clubregistration.net. Jim Falgout says “we have money.” Chris Christensen reported that the last Happy Hour at Uncle Bucks had 23 in attendance. The August HH will be at the Trinity Hall Pub & September’s will be at BJ’s in Plano. Frank Briggs has been working on details for the Show and Shine at Round Up. He will have ballots for people to fill out including people in the community. With the Show and Shine being set up on Main Street in Grapevine, the Porsches are sure to draw a crowd. Travis Howard reported that the last two Time Trials were not too bad. The May 23rd TT at MSR had 45 drivers and the July TT had 35 drivers. Travis is thinking that he would like to move the second Time Trial due to the heat in July. The next Time Trial/Autocross is on September 11th – 12th. Travis also announced that he will be the new “Grid Queen” at the DE’s… Should we still keep the “queen” part???? Christy Payne had several things to report on…being Social Chair is a big job! Christy reported that the Father’s Day event at Speed Zone was well attended with 47 people. It was a great place to have an event… an air conditioned room for people to hang out and talk, lots of good food, and everyone loved driving on the tracks. Christy also reported on the Porsches and Ponies event at Lone Star Park that had 14 people attendance. The group had an air conditioned room that was trackside with lots of great food. The big winner of the day was Trish Christensen winning $219. Way to Go Trish!!! The next item on Christy’s agenda was Founder’s Day/Holiday Party. It will be held at The Gaylord Texan on December 11th. She would like help with gathering items for the silent auction. Christy also announced that our very own John Hamilton will be the DJ as well as our Master of

8

Ceremonies at Founder’s Day. Founder’s Day/Holiday Party will be one big party this year especially since the Autocross/ Time Trial end of season celebration will be separate from Founder’s Day this year. This celebration is scheduled for November 16th at Dave and Buster’s in Dallas. The cost will be $30 per person and everyone receives a game card to go play all of the fun games.

reminded the group that Maverick Region will be turning 50 in November 2012. Does this mean we should plan a BIG celebration??

Robyn Howard had only one thing to say…she beat her husband (Travis) at the last Time Trial at Motorsport Ranch!

Pat Friend reported that all of the Black and White ads in Slipstream will stay at the same price, but the Color ad rate for the front and back cover are ridiculously low and have been increased. Pat also had some examples of some really nice name tags to show everyone. These name tags will be for all members who attend events. The first name tag will be FREE. Christy will make a form for members to complete with information they would like on their name tag.

Bryan Bell only came to the meeting to eat the cookies. James Shoffit announced that the Nominating Committee members are Carey Spreen, Robyn Howard, and James Shoffit. If anyone is interested in any of the Board positions, please contact one of these three people. Wendy Shoffit had all kinds of cool stuff in front of her that are now for sale on the National website. She had some cool Porsche flags and other neat stuff so go check out the website. Wendy also had some beautiful trophies in front of her from Parade (of course the trophies belonged to the Shoffit family because they always drive fast). Congratulations Wendy for bringing home the Fastest Lady Award for the 2nd time in a row!! Slipstream also won 2nd Place in Class. Wendy also

As well as enjoying his second place accomplishments for Slipstream, Richard Bradley had $1,000 that was raised through the efforts of RUF Auto Centre/RAC Performance and their Swap Meet benefiting the Hope Shelter.

After making our way around the table, Mike Brodigan had one last thing to announce…Mav of the Month is Bob Benson! The meeting adjourned promptly at 7:45 which was really good considering the number of people at the meeting.

Maverick Roundup 2010 By Tom Froehlich

F

riday, August 6, 2010, was a typical hot Texas August day with afternoon temperatures above 100 degrees. As a dedicated group of 39 Porschephiles gathered in the late afternoon, storm clouds gathered over Dallas. We wondered if a summer thunderstorm would cool us off or just leave us hotter with the post rain humidity. But the question never got an answer as the rain missed our gathering in Grapevine, TX and moved away as the evening progressed. So the fun was never dampened as our gathering started Friday evening during Happy Hour at Love and War in Texas. Conversation, stories, meeting of new friends and a great meal were had by all on the first evening of our multi-event Maverick weekend. Saturday morning dawned as expected, warm and cloudless. The group began to gather shortly after 7 a.m. at the old train station in historic downtown Grapevine. Ultimately we had over 15 beautiful Porsches on display at the Show and Shine. Ballots were cast by club members and passers-by for their favorite car and later that evening we found out that Alan and Linda Bambina’s 1994 Speedster was chosen as Best in

Photos by Tom Froehlich Show, earning them a wonderful bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape to celebrate their victory. As the heat built Saturday afternoon, we all retreated to the air-conditioned confines of the Grapevine Opry to see the return of Elvis. A superb Elvis tribute artist who helped to prove that Elvis is still alive and well, even if not in his original body, treated us to a fabulous concert. BJ Henson sang along and it was rumored that she knew all but about half a dozen of the words to all the songs sung, including a gospel song Elvis loved and performed. After the show, we drove a short mile or so to La Buena Vida Winery for a tasting. We sampled some of Texas’ best wines over the next couple of hours and spent more time talking about cars, and the meaning of life. We tried 2 whites and 2 reds and for me the clear favorite was the Becker Claret out of Fredericksburg. But I suspect that if you asked, others might give you a different opinion. When 5 p.m. rolled around we moved on to the Silver Fox Restaurant where our esteemed president had arranged for Happy Hour. We were feted with a fabulous table of hors d’oeuvres by a very gracious staff and spent another hour socializing and enjoying each other’s company.

We then returned to the hotel where John & Madhu enjoying a cold beer... Cheers!

10

we had a catered dinner of fabulous Mexican food from Esparza’s and the results of the earlier voting where Frank Briggs announced the Show and Shine winners. Following this, our esteemed president conducted a team Tech quiz where the format was a single elimination oral exam, with each team of 4 or 5 fielding a single question in succession. Answer it correctly and your team stayed in for the next round, but answer it wrong and you were out! The Master of Ceremonies repeated chant throughout was, “It ain’t fair, but I don’t care.” It proved to be a spirited competition, won by “Team Testosterone,” the only team with 4 guys, who for their effort and knowledge each got a T shirt, which was probably a fitting reward for the competition. Following this, we had our door prize drawing for fabulous prizes that Tom Minella had obtained for the event and everyone went home a winner. Sunday morning we gathered around 8 a.m. for the instructions prior to our tour, ably led by our newlyweds, John and BJ Harvey. After getting instructions and directions and signing the waivers, the group lined up and departed shortly before 8:30 a.m. The tour went smoothly until Three sweet ladies out to Alan and Linda have a little fun! Bambina blew a tire in their award winning Speedster and had to put on their lightweight spare. But this allowed them to finish the drive at RAC Performance in Carrolton where Hans and his staff treated us all to a great tour of the facility, lunch and a very interesting tech talk by their man who does all their work restoring interiors. I think I can safely say that it was a side of cars that was

fascinating to everyone, but something none of us knew much about. By early Sunday afternoon, we all dispersed to return to our regular lives after a great weekend of fun and camaraderie. BJ, John, Linda & Alan Everyone who attended at the hotel where it was expressed their high all fun and games. level of enjoyment and all are looking forward to next year. The present plans for 2011 are to gather at the Cliffs at Possum Kingdom where the Minellas have a condo and our activities will spread out from there. So make your plans to join us next year, I guarantee you will have fun! I would like to thank my wife, Susan, for A friendly chairing the event and conversation while her extremely energetic enjoying each other. and effective co-chairs, Susan, Judy, Hans & BJ and John Harvey Mike having a look at and Barb and Tom Jackie’s new GT3 RS... Minella. Without their energy and dedication, this event could never have occurred and we would all have missed an unbelievable weekend of fun!

Having a look around RAC with Hans, a new red Boxster Spyder and Mike Brodigan , John & BJ Harvey learning a new trade.

RAC for Hope Swap Meet By Robyn Howard

D

edicated to our dearest friend Lanean Hughes, RUF Auto Centre/RAC Performance donated all of the proceeds from the day’s event, which totaled $1000.00, to the Hope Shelter. As the day warmed, so did everyone’s heart as a steady stream of people came looking for that one special and

Photos by Charlie Davis & Richard Bradley unique item. I found mine, in a shiny gearshift knob with the Porsche shield in the middle. It doesn’t fit either one of my cars, but that doesn’t matter, it was one of those “I can’t live without it” moments! It looks awesome on my shelf and knowing the proceeds went to help someone, makes all the difference. Another benefit of the swap meet was the camaraderie that was shared as old friends reunited and news faces were met. And when you stopped and took it all in, there was a good selection of parts and conversations ranging from the early 911 to the new 997 and of course, the 914! The biggest draw about going to RAC Performance, other than the fabulous people, is the collection of cars that you will find. This seems to always include, but isn’t limited to all types of exotics including RUF, Ferrari, Lamborghini, American muscle and a very nice spread of Porsches. Hans, if you ever need someone (me) to test drive or baby-sit the green GT3, you can call and know I will be there for you… Betty and I counted our monopoly money to see which one of your cars we could buy... dreaming is so much fun!

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

O

nce in a while something comes through the shop that gives me an unusual task to perform.

Not long ago a 2010 GT3 entered the shop. It had very few miles on it and was for sale by another shop. It had already been in an original owner’s hands, and whoever that was, had sold it off.

It came to us for an oil leak at flywheel/transmission bell housing area. I checked the history in the Porsche database and found that it was the third time for this complaint. Interesting. The car had nearly no miles on it. I don’t remember the exact number of miles now, but it was under 1000 miles on odometer. We had never had it in our shop prior to that day.

Just get it right cleaned. Followed by sending all photos over seas and stand by for further instructions. So we move forward. We find out that the seal is not correctly seated and at an incorrect depth. Seems like an easy fix to me, just implement a correct procedure! Porsche decides they want complete satisfaction that this is corrected for once and for all. Their correction was so “Porsche like!” I could tell serious engineers were involved in what we were directed to do. Mark spent about three hours polishing the crankshaft surface with a compound we had to track down along with a polishing cloth. Before polishing the surface area he measured crank endplay and run out. Next I forwarded data and found it was all spot on measurements. Next the seal was installed and the depth of the seal was set and measured to the .01mm variable depth tolerance in four places. Then a trace powder compound was sprayed on the entire area around the seal. Everything was then reassembled.

Mark Cooper draws the repair and we discuss it at great length. I then contact Porsche for their perspective and see what they want us to do to get this cool car correct. Many GT3’s have been in our shop, as John always A look after fifty miles... seems to be needed to get them Next my support in this effort track prepared for the various is employed. Mark goes on to work on something else. I owners. We are used to seeing them with all kinds of track have to drive a 2010 GT3 25 miles. Let sit overnight and related needs, but pretty much never with mechanical issues. then drive another 25 miles. Then Mark has to remove And absolutely none with repeat mechanical issues. These the transmission and check trace powder areas for any cars are bulletproof monsters. Yet this one was definitely lubrication intrusion. leaking oil out of transmission/engine joint area. These late GT3’s have an inverted flywheel seal. The So I file a request with technical and ask “How do you crankcase is under a slight negative pressure when running. want us to pursue this?” We know we want to pull the This pulls the sealing lips tighter to the flywheel and transmission and investigate, yet we want the factory guys helps oil removal thru the drain path inside the seal area. involved all the way. So technical guys on our side of the Considering the huge rev range of the engine, it is a really pond respond and say they want PAG guys in Germany interesting way to keep the engine dry, and it works, if the completely involved in this situation. This took a couple car is driven as designed. If someone buys it, and lets it sit, days of waiting to let everyone come to an agreement as it can have very miniscule seeps that accumulate and appear to how to move forward. The main reason for the delay is to be a problem. The only problem there is that engine is Germany being so many hours ahead of us. not being exercised. Buy one and put it on a pedestal in a garage and it’s not happy. But buy it and drive it and all is The word comes back to pull the gearbox, take lots of good, really good! high resolution photos before any cleaning, remove the flywheel seal with huge care and make certain no damage We have been told that if you maverick this repair and is done to the crankcase during removal then save the seal go old school, the seal install will not leak. This might and do as little damage as possible during removal… Take create a whistling noise due to negative pressure pulling more high-res pics after the seal was removed and its area at the sealing lip and cause it to slightly detach from the September 19

continued ramblings... crankshaft surface. Plus this would allow un-metered air into the crankcase and then influence the injection system adaptation numbers. Hummm. For me, I’d bet it would only whistle if the seal that wasn’t perfectly seated and therefore slightly higher or lower in contact pressure evolves, thus creating a whistling noise. I love the engineering idea behind this sealing resolution. It is about sealing an engine designed to run constantly between 4000 and 8000 RPM. At those levels of operation this sealing system adds HP to the overall output that you cannot have when running a traditional sealing solution. It is so Porsche. “If it is not leaking oil it probably doesn’t have any in it” used to be a mantra for us in the old days of pushing the limit when dealing with Porsche engineering. Sooooooo, I had to drive a 2010 GT3 50 miles and get paid for it! The factory paid for my drive time. Are you kidding me? I sometimes still feel like a little kid in these cars after 38 years of doing this. I drove it with the revs down and grandma-ed it the first 25 miles just to tease the technology and see if I could make it leak. Short shifted at 4000 RPM, sometimes less. Cruised down the tollway in an upper gear and yawned a lot, then let sit overnight knowing I had not driven it in a way that could maybe mask

a slightly abnormal leak. Next day… here we go. Pulled the red whenever possible and never let revs fall below 4 grand. Pulled the red in 4th a few times too. Uhhh the velocity at that point is quite high. Yet hit 5th and it still pulled like crazy. Always behaved at those speeds. Transient response at high velocities was so crisp, laser sharp and predictable. Undulations in the road created some interesting moments, especially in long sweepers, but all I had to do was let the car do the work. Not overdrive it. Just let it negotiate these things with some somewhat hairy moments of 10/10’s driving. Had not done that for a while. Loved every minute of it.... Transmission was pulled off again and no leak was found. Not even a trace. We were most happy. Just for the record. Never opened it up to maximum engine operating limits and got into 10/10’s situations when around any other drivers. I would not do that. I drove this car when I knew traffic was gonna be at it’s lightest. Havin Fun And Trying To Not Early Apex In Life! Cliff

Member Spotlight: Lem Miller by Andrea Bell

I

would like to introduce you to our new member in the spotlight, Lem Miller. Lem and his wife, Nell own a loaded 2009 911 S. He said it is painted “Speeding Ticket Red.” The car came into the family in February of this year. The Porsche was actually a surprise gift to Lem’s wife. He presented the car after dinner on her birthday by having the valet at Al Biernat’s Restaurant in Dallas pull up in it as they were leaving. They drove to the restaurant in her other car, a red Infiniti G-35 Coupe which Lem’s neighbors picked up for him. She didn’t notice the Porsche until he actually pointed it out to her. Then Lem recalls, “She was basically in shock.” Everyone in the restaurant knew about the plan and many of the employees came out to witness the event. There is actually a video of her reaction posted on You Tube. You can watch it at http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=OB9S6DUuP7A&feature=email. Not a bad birthday present, right? Guys – are you taking notes? Yes Bryan, I like red too! But I digress – back to Lem! Lem has been married to his best friend and wife for 27 years. They both actually enjoy the Porsche and love to take road trips in it. Through work, he has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. to every state with the exception of North Dakota. A road trip is planned to knock that state off the list via the Porsche! They have one daughter who is 22 years old. She lives in New Jersey where she is a junior attending Rutgers University. They also have 4 dogs that they walk every day. Lem has been in the DFW area most of his life, but briefly lived in Illinois. Nell grew up in the DFW area so they actually consider themselves as DFW “Natives.” Lem and Nell also both like to fish, travel overseas, and shoot pistols at the gun range. Lem also admits that he occasionally plays some golf. We are so glad to have both Lem and Nell join in our Maverick family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org. September 23

kay, so there was a bit of traffic year’s scheduled events in Savannah, Georgia. We hear that to get to Uncle Buck’s, but that in 2012, Parade will be held in Salt Lake City, which I’m is no excuse for not coming out sure has some exciting future venues to visit. for some good food. We had a fairly Round Up has come and gone, but for those of you who small turnout of were able to attend, thank you. I’m about 23 folks who sure you had a wonderful time and braved the warmer are looking forward to next year’s temperatures and festivities. Your club has worked the traffic. We know that 114 is a hard to put on this great event in challenge, but it will be for some Grapevine this year. Some of those time to come. So please give yourself who are working hard and deserve some extra time and come to Happy a big thank you are pictured in this Hour, we want to see your smiling article. There are so many activities “Porsche” faces. And for those of in our very active Maverick Club, so you with really good excuses - like please check the events section in you were on vacation and having a your Slipstream or go to http://mav. really good time or something close pca.org for timely updates. to that, we hope to see you at our Proud Texan’s, John Harvey & Barbara Kauffman & Well, we are going to keep this BJ Harvey...Hope we saw you there! next HH. The truth be known, the month’s article on the abbreviated summer months do cause change of side, but we do hope to see more of you all at next month’s plans with travel and we wish everyone safe travels wherever Happy Hour to be held at BJ’s, located at 1101 N. Central you are this season. Expressway, Plano. Cheers for now, see you there. The food was again very good at the Uncle’s, the warm chicken salad and Ahi Tuna were excellent and looking around, it would seem everyone was enjoying what they had ordered. Prices are about $10 less per entree compared to an upper end restaurant, but in reality we are not sure the extra ten bucks in most cases is worth it. Oh sure, every once in a while we like to go to an expensive restaurant, but sometimes it is hard to justify in our current economy and if you are looking for a Buffalo Burger this is the place. Beer choices were very good, whether you select a micro-brew or a commercial standby. We had our usual location at the end of the restaurant that offers privacy behind a restaurant provided screen. You will all notice a picture of our driving champ (no guys it’s Wendy & James Shoffit a young woman), with one of her trophies! Wendy Shoffit. Proof again that when women put their mind to it, they can do as well and in some cases better than the boys. So look out and over your shoulder guys, this gal is on the move! Congratulations Wendy on your winnings at Parade this year. Unfortunately we had to miss it, but we will hopefully be ready for next 24
