Ranch in Cresson with one of our DE’s going on. You’ll also get to drive your car (low speed) on the track to experience the thrill and a little classroom time.

Mav of the Month:

Our Maverick of the Month award goes to TWO people, Susan and Brendan Eagan, who have jumped in to assist John and B.J. Harvey on setting up, pre-driving, and managing our Sunday Drive program. How did they get involved? They came to our monthly board meeting, listened, perceived a need in an activity that they already enjoyed, and decided to contribute. That’s it, folks: giving back to a volunteer organization so it can continue to improve. Thanks, Susan and Brendan, for all you do, we honor you as our Mav of the Month, and reward you. Enjoy your dinner at the Silver Fox!

CONGRATULATIONS RICHARD AND ALL OUR CONTRIBUTORS. Well it’s back to busy with all the events we’ve got scheduled for September (see page 1). If you’re looking for a good, fun way to get introduced to our Drivers’ Education (DE) program, join us on the September 25th Sunday Drive which will end up at Motorsport 2

Chris has been a Maverick for over ten years and owned a 2000 Boxster S. He recently sold it with tears in his eyes… Welcome, dream car; a 2010 Carrera Cab. Now that the tears have dried up, he’s having a blast! Here’s to sharing the fun in our events with many Mav’s throughout 2011.

John enjoys DE’s, Happy Hours, Porsche Parade and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab so that’s how it got in his blood.

arade, it’s a wonderful thing! For all of you out there that have attended, you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who still are confused about all the hype, read through this month’s issue and you’ll see what I’m talking about. To be honest, I have only been able to enjoy the Maverick hosted 2004 Ft. Worth Parade, but next year’s looks to be taking advantage of another one of America’s beautiful locations, Salt Lake City, Utah. As PCA members, we are so fortunate to be associated with an organization that puts 100% into everything they do. I hope you put everything you can into it as well. I’ll have more of this year’s Savannah Parade to share next month, so if you went and have an experience to share, send it to me, editor@mavpca.org. Finally, I want to thank everyone of you that has ever contributed to Slipstream, because without your continued help and support, it wouldn’t be what it is today. Today, for the third time ever in our almost fifty years, we have won first place. Our past two winners are Julia Underwood in 1991, and Teri Davis in 1984.

Maverick Minutes

Madhu Rao, Secretary

O

ur August 2011 board meeting started at 7pm with a review of the recent Porsche Parade event in Savannah, GA. John Hamilton reviewed the successes of the region which include several first place awards for driving events as well as, (cue the trumpets, please), a first place finish for Slipstream! As the results were announced, we began to drum the refrain “We will rock you… We are the champions.” Have you ever had that kind of fun at a board meeting? Well then, why not join us at a future board meeting? John opened the meeting with a simple comment, to let the Maverick Region know that “we hear them.” To this point, the recent Maverick Region survey highlighted the need to optimize our communications with you. To achieve this, John will be sending out a monthly summary of events via email. As a follow up to the July meeting John asked everyone to forecast their anticipated expenses and utilize a ‘revenue favorable’ budget mindset going forward. At the meeting committee chairs discussed how they could achieve this objective in their report outs. Madhu Rao, (yours truly) reviewed the recent Maverick Region survey. The results and number of responses were extremely encouraging. Thank you for your feedback. This will help all of us plan more expediently for the future. Additional survey information is contained in an article in this edition of Slipstream. After presenting the survey data, Madhu reviewed the timeline associated with the Maverick Region 2012 election. Maverick Region members interested in an executive council office may contact Brendan Eagan, John Harvey or Carey Spreen at nomination@mavpca.org. Brendan noted that the Vice-President position for 2012 is currently open. The next issue of Slipstream will contain the ballot of candidates and instructions for voting. Results will be announced at Founders Day on November 12, 2011. Fresh from his victory lap, Richard Bradley was smiling from ear to ear. He mentioned that it has been helpful to have an intern, Amanda, assist with the copy and layout of Slipstream. He also reminded each committee chair to submit their articles and photos to him before the 17th of the month. If you are reading this next month, you’ll know I was compliant! Jim Falgout noted that our fiscal position continues to improve. He reviewed our cash position and discussed our future expenses and revenue from upcoming events. The team of Carey Spreen, Brendan Eagan, and John Harvey described their plans for upcoming Sunday Tours and Rallies. 8

It appears that members of the region really enjoy these events as evidenced by your recent survey feedback. Carey described a Bring Your Own Porsche (BYOP) Rally event scheduled to be held on October 23 in conjunction with the Sunday Drive to San Martino Vineyards. Oops, did I just disclose the final destination of this Rally event? Judging from the success of the May Sunday Drive mark your calendars to join your fellow Mavericks on this date. You can always watch the Cowboys game later… Brendan and John reviewed the historical success of Sunday Drives and shared some concept ideas to incorporate these events with other Maverick Region events. Brendan noted that tour maps for Garmin GPS units are available on the Maverick website. If you have a question or a different brand GPS unit (e.g., Magellan, Tom Tom) please contact tours@mavpca.org for additional information. John reviewed the upcoming Boxstoberfest event in Fredericksburg, TX, September 9-11, 2011. The event is open to all Porsches. John also described the next Sunday drive on September 25 which includes a brief visit to Motorsport Ranch. Details are here > http://mav.pca.org/Events/Calendar.asp. Bring your Porsche, your driving partner, and your Maverick Region badge and introduce yourself to everyone. Pat Friend noted that advertising placements are healthy and discussed some advertising ideas for our 50th anniversary celebration. Stay tuned for details. James Shoffit also reviewed the recent Parade event in Savannah, GA, and next year’s event in Salt Lake City, July 8 –14, 2012. (Note to self – post the event on the refrigerator at home). James also reviewed our current Facebook page and opportunities to update/integrate this into our regional communications plan. Based on feedback from the survey we know this is important for several Maverick Region members. Wendy Shoffit updated us about how other regions are communicating with their membership (e.g., websites, newsletters, etc.). She noted that an opportunity may exist to create videos of our various events (e.g., Autocross, Drivers’ Education, etc.) to provide an overview of these for region members. She also reminded us that Maverick Regional directories are available for $5 at www.clubregistration.net. John Hamilton presented a report on behalf of Christy Payne and the Social Committee. The 2011 Founders’ Day event will be held on Saturday, November 12, at the Hilton Hotel in Southlake, TX. Please join us at this fun event! John also described the upcoming Holiday Party and All Member’s Party. Additional information will be posted on the Maverick Region website about these two events. Lisa Steele announced that in July we gained 27 new and

transferred members, thus growing our total membership to 1984 total members (1188 primary & 796 affiliate). The process outlined by the membership committee to contact new and existing members is resulting higher new and renewal memberships. Lisa is also seeking your photos from recent or past Maverick Region events. Find your four best photos and send them to Lisa at membership@mavpca.org. Linda Bambina described the process to develop an anniversary logo for the 50th Maverick Region celebration. She also presented an idea to create awareness for the Hope Shelter at various Maverick Region events. For additional information about how you can help the Hope Shelter, please contact Chris Hamilton at cheerin104@hotmail.com. Mike Brodigan described the upcoming Drivers’ Education events September 24-25. Early registration is strong with 50 registrations. Mike described the value of Maverick Region events as they offer a significant amount of instructor time. Building on this theme Mike described a concept idea of ‘Texas 2-Step’ event. This could include a mini Drivers’ Education event in conjunction with a Driving Tour or AX/TT event. I have seen Mike and his wife Judy dance the polka so when he starts talking about “two-stepping” get ready for something special!

August 10 , 2011

Fresh from their victory laps at Parade, Travis and Robyn Howard described the AX/TT events on September 10-11. Travis discussed the value of Maverick Region driving events as these include up to 10 runs per session. That is great value for the total cost! Travis discussed the opportunity to return to Pennington Field in Bedford for AX/TT events in 2012. Robyn mentioned our upcoming Club Race on October 2930. Robyn, Travis, and Mike stressed the need for safety at all driving events including recruiting and fairly compensating the corner workers at such events. Our guests attending this meeting were Bob Lewis, Mike Picolla and Jason Trent. Bob Lewis has been a longstanding contributor to the success of this region in various roles. Mike provided some very relevant insights about Maverick Region events from a member perspective. Jason drives a 2007 Cayman and attended the June Happy Hour at Ruggeri’s. He enjoyed the event and described his interest to help out the Maverick Region. If you have an interest to help out the region please let any Board member know your interests and we’ll take it from there. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm.

Parade TSD Rally By Fran Ussery

I

’ll start by saying that I’m married to the infamous Billy Bob Evil, rally master for both the DFW ’87 Parade, and Oklahoma ’96 Parade. He evaluates EVERYTHING, and takes this pretty seriously. I’ll continue by saying that I Rally when arm-twisted and I’m not very serious. This time, I did the arm-twisting, and after much discussion, we decided to Rally, Carl the driver and myself the navigator. Now our goal was to finish without tears, without yelling, and still married! Carl attended the Parade Rally class, and came out with great notes and a grocery list of items we needed, including sticky notes. He made three sticky notes that we put on the steering wheel, the passenger window and the radio – “Have Fun.” Those silly little notes and the message, that this was a fun thing to do, actually worked! We laughed about the odometer magically changing to kilometers (we had to read the manual to go back to miles), and Carl’s inventive math skills to recover from our “pause” error.

10

It worked so well, that we actually won the unequipped class! How did that happen? The Rally Master used tricks that were not punitive, his instructions were clear and fair, with signs that could be seen at Rally speeds, we paid attention to CAST speed changes and WE HAD FUN. The area around Savannah is beautiful with lovely little towns and waterways. We discovered the key to having a great Rally experience is to enjoy the moment, enjoy the scenery and enjoy each other – just HAVE FUN.

Fran & Carl off for the win.

Who Are We? By Madhu

Rao

A

fter completing our initial review of the 2011 Maverick Region survey it is very obvious that those who responded (you) are very passionate about the region, its success, and are willing to share feedback. As we approach Maverick Region’s 50th year of existence this is a great foundation to build our future on. Listed below is a brief overview of survey responses.

Rationale - In 2009 I bought my first 911 (mid-life crisis Red) and became a member of the Maverick Region through PCA membership. In 2010, I was fortunate to join the executive council as your secretary. At our board meetings this year we began to discuss the need for a membership survey to better understand the current situation and future expectations of the Maverick Region. Methodology - On July 6, 2011, John Hamilton, our Maverick Region President, sent out an email to all primary members containing a link to an electronic survey. An overview follows:

Survey Overview - Surveyed Members 1200, Completed Surveys 190, Response Rate 15.83%, Number of questions 18, Survey completion time 5’30”. 1. The response rate is extremely encouraging in light of the many competing priorities we all face. 2. The survey completion time reflects the fact that many questions allowed respondents to submit additional comments. For example in question 15 nearly 50% of respondents provided feedback. 3. Throughout the survey the number of completed responses was very high.

Current Situation - Here are some selected highlights from the survey. The responses help illustrate our current situation. 1. 30% of respondents purchased their first Porsche in the past three years. 25% purchased their Porsche between four and nine years ago. 45% purchased their first Porsche over ten years ago.

The Maverick Region Survey SAID!

2nd choice = Plano, 3rd choice = Grapevine, 4th choice = Las Colinas. Total mentions (1st to 4th place) include: 1st= Grapevine 71%, 2nd = Dallas 65%, 3rd = Las Colinas and 4th = Plano. 7. Quality of communications, Slipstream awareness and quality were all very high. 8. Nearly 60% of respondents are aware of the Maverick Region 50th Anniversary in 2012. 9. Cliff’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear

I

suddenly remembered something from the past tonight and was dwelling on it.

It has been so hot lately - 100-109 temperatures daily. I found myself fondly remembering working in a no AC shop in Boulder, Colorado. We rarely suffered from severe heat in the dead of summer. A 90 degree day there seemed harsh. The winters could be brutal outside, yet we had sufficient heating, so it was not a big deal inside the workshop.

Jeeezzee It’s Hot Outside Lately

He just indicated snow that had fallen into his eye and it was most unfortunate. I do not remember the story he gave now, as it was near 30 years ago. When he came back to work, his eye was red as a beet and swollen up like a tomato. We hugged each other and laughed like crazy. I love what I do!

Cliff

How we P Techs dealt with the weather is what I am remembering fondly right now. The first snow in the fall always produced monumental snow ball fights amongst us. We wanted to be first to drive a Porsche in with about three to seven inches of snow built up on it so you could hit somebody with the first-lobbed three- to four-incher that’s well packed after a carefully planned attack. This will incite carefully planned counter attacks as well as major offensives for the rest of the day. It was not unusual for managers to get involved and then be on the list of “High priority targets” for us.

Snow covered 911

We were first and foremost a family and knew how to have fun at work while being productive, much like the terrain I am currently deployed in. I feel so lucky to do what I have been doing. Anyway, when an environment like this exists it is only a matter of time until something unfortunate happens. One day, a tow truck pulled inside to drop off a 911. The weather outside was awful. The 911 had a dead battery and engine temperature was about 15F. There was no way to jump start it without extreme measures. The pavement outside was so slick and cold that it would have taken every breathing soul in the dealer to push the car up the mild incline into the shop. The tow truck backed it in. There was about ten inches of snow on the car. A tech who had harassed me earlier in the day with multiple well placed ninja strikes was in front of the tow truck and had begun peppering me with shots as I was directing the tow driver. I gathered up a large, well packed, retaliation shot. I lobbed it over the 911 and tow truck in his direction as he bent down to gather more ammunition from the truck’s front bumper. He stood up, looked up, and boom, my incoming ordnance landed directly in his wide open right eye. Off he went to ER. Mind you, this kid was a hockey player from Minnesota. He had a huge scar on his cheek from a high stick incident. 14

Park-in-the-Paddock includes genuine German biergarten, real turf, and lots of opportunities to relax and enjoy the magic

Rennsport Reunion IV Will Feature Porsche Park

W

ith the rolling landscape and park benches on a perfectly-groomed lawn, you might think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly what Porsche Cars North America intends with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock—located amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, October 14-16. This area, located behind the media center (where the tire companies usually set up for a race weekend), will feature an authentic German biergarten as well as German food and and a park atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break from the on-track activity and absorb the experience. But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have plenty of sports car activity as well, according to Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport. “Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock will include a center stage where driver introductions and all the autograph sessions will take place and live music will be played, as well as the very popular model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS movie star Sally Carrera—maybe our most famous 911—and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,” said Harling. “We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased. Other activities around the paddock are taking shape as well for the October event. “Porsche Motorsports North America, headquartered in Santa Ana, will have a display not only to show its modern and vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to take advantage of the company’s free technical advice offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling. With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911

displays which help capture the history of this iconic sports car. The first is a special collection of the most significant 15 race cars in 911 history. The other 911 display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club has assembled 40 examples representing significant models across time. PCA will assist Rennsport Reunion IV with several activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display, Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that exciting contest. The assembly of exceptional examples of 911 production models for the History of the Porsche 911 Display is well underway, representing the 911 model throughout its generational life. To apply to participate in the display, please contact Tom Provasi for information and registration at tprovasi@netgate. net or 408/947-0980. Many PCA workers have volunteered to assist with our activities at the Rennsport Reunion IV. If you are interested in supporting the effort, please contact Sharon Neidel with the PCA Volunteer Pool at sharon neidel@yahoo.com or 650/508-1308. We will have a very special event memento for the volunteer workers. Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV are published on the following Porsche web site: www.porsche.com/usa/rennsport-reunion-iv/. The Cover that Never Was... Article and Photo By Charlie Davis

S

shhhh...it’s a secret! Don’t let him know...

We all love surprises and the Savannah Parade had more than a few. But, at least for me, one surprise was special. It started about a week before Parade when I got an e-mail from Linda Bambina...she was forwarding a query from Lynn Turner-Kessler for pictures of her father at work at Parades. The “at work” part is unnecessary, because it seems like Leonard is always taking pictures! Anyone who has looked at Porsche Panorama has seen his talent...go to Parade and you’ll see how much effort and dedication is required. Lynn wanted pictures for some kind of tribute to Leonard...I sent her a bunch. My security clearance is not high enough to ask about the details, so I didn’t. A little history... I met Leonard in 1971 at the Sun Valley Parade (that was my first). He was an engine judge in the Concours...I have a prized picture of him at work. An interesting factoid: That was the only time Leonard was a Concours judge. He holds the record for the longest tenure as Zone 3 Representative...20 years! Note that during those years, Zone 3 included a MUCH larger area, but with much fewer members than it is today! Following that job he had a long stint as Policy Chair-

man. The Porsche Panorama Chief Photographer is a rather late undertaking and his current passion. Leonard and I have been friends for many years...not only because of the Porsche connection, but also because of the Nikon connection. We both carry Nikon gear around and like to take pictures. I remember an incident at the first San Diego Parade in 1977...Porsche AG introduced the 928...it was located on stands in the middle of a big pool (to keep people away)...it was illuminated with spotlights (it was nighttime), but they were not very bright. Leonard wanted to take a picture and use a long exposure time, but he had not brought his tripod. He borrowed mine. Friends. When I got to Savannah, Lynn whispered in my ear: Leonard was going to get the Sholar Award. She had a “special” video/slide show to accompany his recognition. She asked that I take pictures of Leonard during the video and afterwards. I was, of course, thrilled to do this! Lynn apparently had made similar requests of other photographers, because as the moment drew near, I noticed that I was not the only one heading for Leonard or the stage. I crouched in the isle to Leonard’s left. He’s used to me taking pictures of him (he hates it!...we often compete to see who can surprise the other with a photo ambush)...I think he at first just thought I was being a pest and ignored me. I took a couple of pictures to reinforce the idea that my drawing near was nothing other than one of his friends being invasive...I didn’t want him to figure out what was happening until later! It worked. Lynn and Betty Jo had put together a wonderful video production and I was subsequently able to get some very nice pictures. I liked one so much that I asked Betty Jo to break the “rule” prohibiting having people on the cover of Panorama...that was not to be. Leonard is in charge of selecting/processing Panorama covers and wanted no part of putting himself there! I still think it’s a good picture of Leonard enjoying his “moment”...one that he very much deserved. I printed it up and sent one to the Turners, just for their enjoyment. I titled it “The cover that never was...” and now you get to enjoy it too... Leonard may be too modest to do this, but I’m not! After all...what are friends for if not to publicly humiliate each other?

Happy Hour - Mac’s Steak & Seafood By Ralph Kauffman

D

espite the hot temperature and vacation season, we had another excellent turnout of Mavericks at the August Happy Hour. About 44 Mavs gathered at Mac’s Steaks and Seafood restaurant on Highway 121 in Colleyville. Early arrivals socialized in the bar and then moved to the dining area as more people arrived. Those who attended Parade this year had stories to tell about their experiences en route and at Parade. As Happy Hour regulars know, this event is one of the best for new (and not so new) members to get to meet and talk with other members. Among new and relatively new attendees this month were Pat Patel with his 2011 Boxster, also Debbie and Randy Leal with his and hers Porsches - his: 2005 Turbo S, and hers: 2002 C4 - and their guest Lee. Another new attendee was Dave Nelson driving his 2011 Turbo S. Some longer-term Mavericks who were present this month included Carey Spreen of Rallymaster fame who said this was his first Happy Hour in years, also Frank and Lois Olson (2003 Boxster) who are 13 year members but this was only their 2nd Happy Hour, Bobby and Mimi Norbin, Frankie Andrew, Denny and Christy Payne, Alan Lage, Clarence Wyatt, Gordie and Sylvia Cohen, and Myra and Jerry Sutton. Myra and Jerry were among Mavs

who brought home numerous awards from Parade this year. We also had prospective member Glen Weber who currently drives an E550 Mercedes, but was lured to Happy Hour by John Hamilton who is in the process of interesting him in converting to Porsche – way to go John! Happy Hour should be a great way to convince prospects to sign on to the world’s best marque! In addition to socializing, everyone enjoyed Mac’s varied dinner menu, including bottomless salad, the large variety of draft beers and wines, and the convivial atmosphere. Next month’s Happy Hour will be Thursday, September 15, at Trinity Hall Pub, 5321 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX (214-8873600). As usual all are welcome. We hope to see you all there.

To Savannah & Back - Parade 2011 By Travis Howard

T

his was the year. I’ve listened to the regular Parade goers for eight years now about how much fun and great friendship they have made at Parade. No excuse this year of it’s too far away or I don’t have enough vacation, we were going to Parade. Something the regulars said I did abide by was, don’t try to do everything. There is too much to do and you will need your down time. This is a vacation. The first priority was to decide which of the four competitions that makes up Parade, Concours, Rally, Autocross, and Tech Quiz, we wanted to participate in. Well, the Concours was out, between Robyn and myself our Porsches are

going to Parade register early. I waited too long and all the tours to Brumos Autowerks were full. I won’t make that mistake again. After the plans were made we waited two months before leaving for Savannah. We used two days for the trip stopping in Atlanta the first night, then arriving

“...the most important bolt-on to make a car go faster is the nut behind the wheel.” either daily drivers or track cars. Not a garage queen in the bunch. I thought about doing the Rally, but on the drive to Savannah we had already spent fourteen hours in a car together. I figured it was best not to push my luck because we still had to drive home together. Robyn and I have autocrossed with the club since we joined in 2003. Autocrossing at Parade would be a challenge since we would be driving the Boxster which Robyn had just purchased at the end of May. I autocross a 1974 914, and Robyn runs a 1987 924S, we would not get a chance to autocross the Boxster before Parade and get a feel for it. I also signed up to take the Tech Quiz to test my knowledge of 914’s. Next step was to log on to the Parade website and register. The process was very straight forward. Select what you want to do, and select what you don’t want to do. Pick the banquets you want to attend and choose a tour or two to places you want to see. Here is a hint, if you are 26

in Savannah early afternoon on Sunday. The first stop at Parade is the Welcome tent where you can ask questions such as where do we go now? We were given a bag full of snacks, a couple bottles of water and pointed to Parade checkin. The organization was excellent, at check-in we were given our name tags, Parade information and a check list to complete as we visited each event table. After completing the process and running across numerous Mavericks, like John and Chris Hamilton, it was time to check into our room and get ready for the Welcome Party. The delicious food that night was an authentic German menu complete with apple strudel for dessert. After dinner we beat a hasty retreat to our room. Our first volunteer assignment was helping park the cars for the Concours starting at 5am. The next morning came early as our group of twenty volunteers started placing the 120+ cars on the grass of Forsyth Park in downtown

Savannah. By 8:30am all the beautiful machines were parked and their owners were completing last minute cleaning before the judging started. Robyn and I used the rest of the day to explore the local Savannah scenery and visited Tybee Island to see the beach and the 100 year old Tybee Lighthouse. We made it back to town in time to listen to Terry Zaccone (one of the best autocrossers ever) give an autocross chalk talk at Parade Headquarters in the Savannah Convention Center. Autocross is like any other competition, you never stop learning and you never stop trying to improve. The next morning started with a drive we signed up for going to Jekyll Island, home of the rich and famous during the early 1900’s. A guided tram tour described the history of the mansions on the island and the Spanish moss draped from the surrounding live oaks immersed you into the narrative. After returning from the drive, Robyn made a beeline for the Goodie Store. The Parade Goodie Store is the only place you can buy real Porsche sanctioned jewelry. Robyn grabbed two Porsche necklaces and a set of Porsche shield earrings. If you see her at a local PCA event check them out, I’m sure she will be wearing them. This day was also the first opportunity to walk the autocross course. We headed over to the venue to learn the course by walking it at least four times. With only five runs the quicker the course is learned the quicker your times will be. We headed back to the room after getting a feel for the course and got ready for the Concours banquet. The Concours

onds and I know my last run will be my fastest. After my next three runs, I’ve hit a cone and only dropped .1 seconds off my first run. Now I’m only a half second ahead of the second place driver and he has knocked three full seconds off of his first run. On my last run I take a third second off my best time and he also drops a third second. But it is too little and too late. I take first place in class S02 showroom stock Boxster.

banquet is the fanciest dinner of the whole Parade and where numerous PCA National award winners are announced. Again it was a night of great food and meeting new friends. Wednesday was another early start. This was the day Robyn and I would be Autocrossing the Boxster for the first time. We were in the first run group at 8:00am. Robyn was very nervous; if you have followed Parade autocross results from the last few years you would know the Maverick Ladies are an autocross powerhouse. Wendy Shoffit was going for her third straight class and Fastest Time of the Day (FTD) trophy. Fran Ussery and Myra Sutton always trophied, and Robyn did not want to let the Ladies down. I was going to run before Robyn and as some of the other drivers finished their first runs I watched to see what kind of time I would need to be competitive. I’ve seen times between 58-61 seconds, except for a Boxster S that rips off a super fast 51 second run. But he is not running in my class so I’m

Robyn, doing her part in bring home a win!

not worried about him. I complete my first run and figure if I get a 57 or 58 second time I’m in a good position since I always get faster with each run. I see my time and it’s a 54.4 and all I can think is this Boxster is a great autocross car. I remember back to the autocross chalk talk by Terry Zaccone when he said the most important bolt-on to make a car go faster is the nut behind the wheel. I’m feeling really good because I’m beating my closest competitor by over three sec-

Now Robyn knows what the Boxster can do and when we autocross she is at most one or two seconds off my best time. Her first run is a test the course time of 63 seconds. By her fourth run she had taken six seconds off her time and was in first place by one second. By now her nerves had settled down and on the last run she drops one and a half seconds to clinch first place in class S02L. Also running in showroom stock class was Fran Ussery who placed second in S03L in her Boxster S, and Myra Sutton who placed second in class S11L in her Cayenne. September 27

Quiz. I had an hour and a half to answer 50 questions on Porsche history and 25 question specifically on 914’s. What I did learn from the quiz is I know more about 914’s than I do Porsche history. Missing only five questions about 914’s and 25 questions on Porsche history, the score was good enough for third place. I lost second place to Manny Alban, the PCA National President, by one tie breaker question.

Sights from Savannah.

On Thursday we headed back to the autocross venue so Robyn could work her volunteer shift and we both could cheer on James and Wendy Shoffit, and Ed Mayo who was Autocrossing his Concours winning 1967 911S. James and Wendy both took first place in their class, and Wendy continued her three year reign with the FTD Ladies win. On Friday I competed in my other event, the Technical and Historical

28

I’m not sure what Robyn did Friday because I spent the next six hours at the PCA Tech Academy learning subjects ranging from how to properly detail your Porsche to how ODBII works in newer cars. I ended up the day earning a PHD and becoming a “Doctor of Porschelogy,” I’m serious, I have the diploma. That evening at the Autocross banquet the Mavericks received their trophies. As Parade drew to a close on Saturday we attended the Victory banquet where a preview of next year’s Parade is presented. I asked Robyn if she had had a good time and enjoyed the

experience of the Porsche Parade. With a big smile on her face she said she can’t wait till next year, Salt Lake City, here we come. What I have learned from being in the Porsche Club is that owning a Porsche can be a special experience, but that experience is not complete till you share it with 1500+ other Porsche enthusiasts. Start making plans for the 2012 Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City and we will see you there.

Upgraded a/c. Car has a sport chip and sport exhaust otherwise stock. The car handles beautifully and is ideal for street or DE. I have owned it and loved it for ten years with zero problems. Our move away from Dallas forces sale. Spare set of 15 inch wheels and some spares. $22,000 o.b.o Contact me at 214 455 6242 or colin.graidage@live.com (1) For Sale: 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, Guards Red/Black 911 Carrera Coupe w/sunroof and G50 transmission. 110,500 miles. All original minus the stereo and tires. A factory whale tail has been added by a previous owner and the factory deck lid comes with the car. I have a 3-ring binder with the service history detailed by month and year. I’m the 4th owner and the 3rd owner owned the car from 1995-2011. The car has had paint work done on the driver’s side as the result of being keyed. To my knowledge, the car has never been in an accident and has a clean car fax. The odometer/speedometer stopped working twice during the life of the car and both times it was removed by the Porsche dealer and sent for factory repair. This caused a mileage note on carfax, but the mileage is accurate per the history of the car, inspections, dealer services and the title statement by the previous owner. Receipts for the service are in the file. The car has just undergone an extensive cosmetic freshening and is in great mechanical condition. The engine doesn’t leak a drop of oil and the recent updates are listed below. $20,500.00 Chris- 214-354-9220 (1) For Sale: 1978 Porsche 928 Euro, Cockney Brown, Black leather / Tan cloth insert interior, No Sunroof (rare) & No side “Rub strips” (rare), 5 speed manual Transmission, S wheels & original phone dials, Current odometer reading is 14,883 miles ( Estimated 65,883 miles ), Immaculately maintained, Headlight “Dip” Switch (currently disabled), 2008 Dallas Autorama Outstanding in Class Award, $9,500 or trade for TDI Mike 972-786-3978 cell.
