SPROCKETS: Getting to Know You By David Robertson, Region President

Driving Friendships. This is the tagline for our club, and the longer I am a member, the more I realize how true this statement is. I often talk about our amazing events and the record participation we are seeing these days, but the people in this club and the friendships I have made are really what makes being a member of the Maverick Region so great for me. Little did I know when I joined years ago, that not only was I able to get my Porsche on a track to realize what a great piece of engineering it is, but I have also met an amazing group of people and continue to do so.

As the Maverick Region President, I have the honor of speaking to or communicating via email with many of our members in the course of club business. One of the great joys of my role has been getting to know members that have been around for many years, those that have just joined the club, and everyone in between. Pretty much everyone! I have all types of conversations. From great news on what we are doing right and equally valued input on where improvements could be made to make our club even better. I welcome all of this discussion because input from our members is how the Maverick Region continues to grow and thrive. There are so many great people in this club from all different walks of life, each with a unique story to tell. We all have a common interest that brings us together, and in this age of online interactions, maybe that gives us a good excuse to have a true conversation. During my time in this club I have gotten to know many of you and I look forward to meeting as many of our members as I can catch up with. When at an event I always try to introduce myself to members I don’t know, but if I don’t make it to you first please come over and say hi.

MAV OF THE MONTH: Jerry DeFeo September marks Jerry’s 20-year anniversary in the Maverick PCA. Long before Jerry became known as our Region trivia expert, he was an advertiser in Slipstream promoting his “Jerry 2 September

DeFeo New Home Designs” business. His tagline “Have You Ever Wished that You Could Find Someone that Took as Much Care to Design Your Construction Project as Porsche Took to Design Your Favorite Car?” still resonates with today’s Porsche owner. Our first Maverick Trivia contest can be found in the February 2002 issue. That’s thousands of Maverick Region members that Jerry has stumped over the years with his interesting questions that challenge any Porschephile. If you have not tried the trivia contest, you need to start with the September version that can be found online along with answers and questions to the previous contest in this issue. The trivia contest is a great way to test your Porsche knowledge. You will learn something each month! Jerry, thank you for all of your work with the Maverick Region over the last 20 years.

DIY: Refreshing Your Interior Trim By Tom Martin If you have a Sand Beige interior in your 9X7 Porsche (911, Cayman, Boxster), then you’ve probably noticed areas on the trim that are worn or chipped, exposing the underlying black plastic. You’ve also noticed that it is quite ugly and detracts from the overall appearance of the cabin. Porsche utilized a “soft touch” paint here, which, as far as I can determine, means that if you just “touch” any part of the Sand Beige trim, even “softly”, the paint will wear or chip. Go figure.

Why Porsche didn’t just mold the plastic parts in beige instead of black is beside me. But then again, what do I know? I invested in Enron.

Fortunately, there is a simple and very neat fix to keep your Sand Beige interior ever fresh. One option is to enlist a professional to respray the affected parts of your interior. They’ll even come to your home or office to do the job. They do a lot of work at the dealerships, refreshing trade-ins for resale. A C-Note or two would likely cover the cost, but then again, if you DIY it, you could save a lot of money, and even refresh your trim whenever needed in the future. And trust me, with Sand Beige interior trim, you will need to do just that. Commonly affected areas are the headlight switch and ignition key bezels, door pocket, rear trunk surrounds and shock towers (on 6 September

photos by Tom Martin Boxsters and Caymans), and basically any area that comes in contact with anything other than air. Without a doubt, the hardest part of touching up interior trim is matching the paint. Even a professional will tell you this as they painstakingly mix various colors to match your interior color. Easy fix: just take one part of your trim down to the paint department of your local Home Depot and ask them to paint match your trim piece to a flat (matte) water base paint. An 8-oz. sample will set you back less than three bucks. Some owners remove the ashtray. In my case, I gingerly popped out the driver’s side air vent cover with a small screwdriver and presented it to a HD paint associate who placed it inside their transmogrifier and came up with a perfect match. Ain’t science grand? Now, you can dab the paint on your chipped areas with a sponge brush, but the best results are achieved with an airbrush application of the paint. I picked up an airbrush at Harbor Freight, selecting their Deluxe Airbrush Kit. Cost was $16.00 with a 20% off coupon. If you subscribe to any magazine published in the English language, chances are it will contain a full page Harbor Freight ad featuring a 20% off coupon, plus an additional coupon for a free flashlight, or tape measure, or some other low-tech wonder tool. The instruction manual included with the kit was useless; it basically informed me that I had just purchased an airbrush. Google searches and You Tube videos provided essential information on the proper use, adjustment, and cleaning of the airbrush. It can be a somewhat finicky tool, so one would be well advised to pursue this same tack.

Now it was time to get dangerous. Armed with a loaded airbrush, using a 2-to-1 water/paint ratio, I was ready to attack those pesky paint chips on my pristine Porsche Cayman. As with any DIY project, preparation is key here. First I sanded the affected areas with 320, then 600, and finally 1500 grit sandpaper. Next the affected areas were masked off with painter’s tape and newsprint to avoid overspray on any non-plastic areas.

Spraying the paint was the easiest step. I connected the airbrush to my three-gallon pancake air compressor and set the pressure to 30 psi. Using measured and consistent strokes, I applied several very thin coats of paint, using the adjustable trigger to fade the paint gradually from the end of the sweep to full spray at the center, then fade out at the end. The spray was very localized, so overspray was not a problem. The blend at either end of the spray appeared to be flawless. I shot the trunk and shock towers of my wife’s Cayman, and the headliner trim and door pockets of mine - all with more than satisfactory results. Be advised that while these instructions address specific Sand Beige interior issues, they should be applicable to factory painted interiors of any other colors. And if you decide to pursue this project yourself; good luck and remember, if you can DIY it, then just do it!

Tech Session Series: Discount Tire By Michael Baynton, Region Tech Session Chair On Sunday, July 22, over 50 Mavs gathered at the Discount Tire store on Ohio Drive in Plano to learn everything there is to know about Porsche tire engineers and tire manufacturers, and how they work together to bring out the best in our cars.

To begin the discussion, store manager Todd Eaddy spoke with great depth and experience about N-spec tires, which is a tire manufacturer code that indicates that certain tires have been engineered specifically to handle the requirement of Porsche automobiles. While Porsche isn’t the only manufacturer to require special tire construction and materials for its vehicles, being aware of these construction variances is important to ensure that your Porsche handling characteristics are optimized. Also note that equipping your Porsche vehicle with tires that do not carry the N-spec rating could affect some warranty coverage. Todd also explained the differences between ultrahigh performance summer tires, track-specific rubber, and all-season performance options. Clearly, your intended usage and driving habits should inform your tire purchase decisions. Overall, though, current tire construction technology and rubber compounds across all categories is vastly superior to tires from even five or ten years ago. Throughout the session, Todd was gracious in answering a multitude of questions about specific applications. Lest the group get “tired” of rubber talk, Todd invited everyone into the workshop area, where he demonstrated their state-of-the-art tire mounting and

10 September

pphotos by Bill Orr tire balancing equipment, as well as specific tools and jacks needed to work on both old and new Porsches. This store even carries “lollipops” to ensure that older air-cooled 911s can be raised using proper jacking points. We also learned that Discount Tire is an industry leader in employee safety and installs special cages to ensure that tires are inflated without risk of injury.

When the rubber hits the road, these tech sessions are made successful by knowledgeable hosts, the interest of our members, and a small army of Mav volunteers who show up early and help with setup and logistics. A special thank-you also to Scott Boyd, owner of Coffee Perks, who graciously donated coffee for this tech session. And stay tuned for info on upcoming tech sessions later this year! Kruder’s Cars & Conversation By Bill Kruder You guessed it! Once again it’s all about coffee and who you meet. Several months ago, Bill Bradley started this Friday coffee meet up at Trio Craft Coffee in Flower Mound. I finally decided to join the fun one Friday and I think we had eight to ten guys there. As it turns out, three of them, including this month’s interviewee, had never been out with us before. Apparently he had read on Facebook that we were meeting and thought he might stop to check it out on his way to work. Well, we struck up a conversation about all things coffee and Porsches and he has been out with us more times than I can count. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you:

photos courtesy of Victor Rojas Victor Rojas: Oh no for some reason people always think I’m from the Northeast but I am from Dallas, specifically Grand Prairie. My Dad was from Mexico and moved here when he was fourteen; my mom was born and raised in Dallas. BK: Where do you live now? VR: We live in Flower Mound; we moved there for the schools. Our son just graduated High School. However, we are moving shortly back to Dallas, to the Design District. BK: Where did you go to school? VR: I went to Jesuit High School in north Dallas. My Dad worked in Dallas so he would take my brother and me to school and my uncle would pick us up. That is, until my brother was able to drive; then he would take us.

VR: Well I have a large extended family; my Dad is one of nine and my mom is one of five. We were always having these big family gatherings that of course revolved around food and drink. BK: Was someone in the business that inspired you? VR: Matter of fact my grandfather started out in the restaurant and hotel business. He started at the bottom and worked his way up, so think that was my inspiration. Plus Mom I think - back in the 80’s we would watch this show called “Great Chefs of the West,” and I remember Stephen Pyles was on it, and my mom said “why don’t you be like him?” BK: What was your first experience in “fine dining”? VR: That would be at the old Dallas Stouffer Hotel. I had experience already as a waiter, so when I joined them, that was what I considered fine dining at its best. BK: So did you start out in the fine dining arena? VR: Heck no! Going to school I waited tables at Bennigan’s. My first “chef” job was at a little place called Mustang Café in Los Colinas. It was nice but no five star experience (laughing).

Victor Rojas, Member since 2017, Owner 2007 Speed Yellow Cayman

BK: And how about college? RA: I graduated from El Centro College with a degree in Culinary Arts.

Bill Kruder: So I know you are not originally from here; where again?

BK: How did you get interested in Culinary Arts?

12 September

BK: When we first met you were opening up a new restaurant as GM, but I recently hear you are somewhere new now? VR: Yes that’s right. I was working on the opening of Bullion, a Bruno Davaillon concept. We got that open, and recently a friend told me about a new opportunity, which ended up being the reopening of the French Room at the Adolphus. They had gone thru a 16-month

$11 million renovation to bring the fine dining experience back to what it was in 1912. BK: I’ve met your wife Michelle at a couple things - how did you guys meet? VR: She was dating a mutual friend of ours and I’d see her out at times. Then somehow I got invited out with her group. Something good happened we have been married for 22 years now, and we have our son Evan (smiling). BK: Let’s talk cars: what was your first memorable Porsche moment? VR: When I was a kid someone who lived down the street had a 914, and I’d see it and I just thought that was the coolest car. BK: And what was your first car? VR: That was a ‘72 Super Beetle, a BAJA; it was out of character for me. It was yellow, had this big

exhaust and exposed engine - truly some else’s car (laughing). BK: So how did the Cayman come about? VR: We were both driving Hondas and I had “secretly” been looking at Porsches on Hemmings. Both the Hondas were getting old so we decided it was time to get something newer. I was looking and looking and decided the Cayman was what

I wanted. It sounds funny, but I like the “speed racer” look of them (laughing). So finally Michelle said “stop talking about it and buy one.” Think I test drove nearly a dozen. I drove three the day I bought this one. BK: So it’s Michelle’s fault? VR: Well I never thought about it but yes (laughing), but she loves the car as much as I do, so not sure there is blame. Every month as I write these interviews I think the same thing: what if . . . ? What if I had not gone to Flower Mound, what if I had not had the chance to strike up that conversation with the “new” guy? So if and when you meet someone new don’t miss out on “Driving Friendships”!

Maverick Marktpreis: Porsche Values by Peter Wen It’s no secret that air-cooled 911s have been gaining value in recent years. With the 993 (the last air-cooled generation) hogging the spotlight, you may have missed the meteoric rise of a particular group of 911 Carreras . . . Super Carreras, that is. The Super Carrera, or SC, was produced from ’78 to ’83, in the middle of the second-generation 911. 911 SCs, in this socalled impact-bumper generation, have enjoyed an incredible run up in value over the last five years. The SC coupes in particular have doubled in value across the board from fair-

conditioned daily drivers to show winners. Targas have also shown significant gains, with a range of about 55 to 65%. The SC Cabriolet, the first 911 convertible ever, reported a more modest gain, between 15 and 30%. A total of 57,890 SCs were produced. Excellence magazine’s Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges: SC Coupe (‘78-‘83) - $20,000-$47,000 SC Targa (‘78-‘83) - $18,000-$43,000 SC Cabriolet (‘83) - $25,000-$45,000

Maverick Trivia: Are you a Porschephile? Jerry DeFeo You can test your knowledge (or Google search ability) of all things Porsche by participating in the monthly trivia contest posted online at http:// mav.pca.org/trivia. Answers are due by the last day of each month. The winner of the trivia contest receives a $25 gift certificate from our sponsor, Zims Autotechnik. In the case of ties, a random drawing determines the winner. Here are the questions, answers, and winner for the July 2018 Trivia. We went with Trivia dealing with ‘70s and ‘80s Porsche 911s. The winner this month, getting ALL 5 of 5 correct, was Tom Allen. Honorable mention goes to Bill Orr, Jim Hirsch, Josh Hoffman, and Tom Martin, who also got all 5 of 5 correct. Question #5 was a bit tricky, as all of the answers were correct, since all four items were valid Porsche options. Heated passenger seat and engine modified for poor fuel were the most selected. Answers: 1)c, 2)c, 3)b, 4)b, 5)a,b,c,d

Black Watch Green c. Stewart Hunting Black d. Dress MacKenzie Brown Source: Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999 pages 64-65 3. Porsche has had to have 911 versions especially for the US, Canada, and Japan, and what they call RoW (rest of world). But at one time they had to have TWO different versions for the US: one for California, and a 49-state model. In what year did they finally have a 50-state 911 in this time span? a. 1979 b. 1980 c. 1981 d. 1982 Source: Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999 page 66 4. Porsche Parade 2018 By Carey Spreen The 63rd Porsche Parade took place in mid-July at the Tan-Tar-A Resort on the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. In case you’re not familiar with the Parade, it’s a week-long “convention” that the Porsche Club of

America holds each year in a different part of the country. There are competitive events, driving tours, social gatherings, awards banquets, and opportunities to meet with and talk to PCA national officers, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) officials, Porsche factory representatives, and often, a member or two of the Porsche family. This year the Parade was only about 520 miles away (roughly, depending on where in the Metroplex you start from), so the one- or two-day drive made it a no-brainer for lots of Mavericks – we had over 60 members from the region attend: 37 entrants and 24 co-entrants, plus a couple of Junior Participant Program (JPP, age 16-17) and College Age Family Program (CAFP, age 18-24) entries. As you might expect, some were first-timers and others were old hands, but I’ll go out on a limb and say that all of us enjoyed our time there. The Parade features four main competitive events: the Concours d’Elegance, the TimeSpeed-Distance (TSD) Rally, the Autocross, and the Technical and Historical Quiz. Other competitions included the Gimmick Rally, the Art Show, the Golf Tournament, and the 5K Run/ Walk. There were also events geared toward the kids, including RC car races (on-road and offroad), and an “anycross,” where they could use any kind of wheeled conveyance to set a time on a predefined course. The Parade is also where national recognition is awarded for various individuals and groups, 20 September

including Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, Region of the Year, membership growth awards, and public service awards. The Zone Representatives present an award to a deserving individual or group, and once in a while, PCA bestows its highest honor, the Bill Sholar Award, to a member who has distinguished himself or herself in an exemplary fashion. PCA also recognizes regional newsletters and websites, ranking them using a panel of judges. You can read more about these awards on the PCA website at https:// www.pca.org/pca-national-awards. Marketing Chair Bill Orr took home a major award: the Lazar-Blanchard Memorial Trophy for Enthusiast of the Year. Congratulations, Bill! Slipstream also won two awards in the Newsletter

Contest: Best Cover, and second place in Class VI (regions with at least 1650 members). Congratulations to 2017 Editor Jim Hirsch! Well deserved! And with another trophy to take home, Maverick Region’s website (Bill Orr, webmaster) took first place in Class V (regions with at least 800 members) in the Website Contest. Kudos again, Bill! Furthermore, the Zone Representatives award went to fellow Zone 5 members RJ Wilmoth and Linda Bosko of the Longhorn Region, in recognition of their outstanding work with the PCA archives. As in past years, Maverick Region entrants represented their region very well, competing in just about every event. In the Concours d’Elegance, Richard Lyschik took first in class PP15T (Preparation – touringlevel judging) with his 2015 Macan; congratulations Richard! Additionally, Don and Harriet Sebert got fourth with their 1993 RS America in class PS05F (Preservation – full judging), and Joshua Gutjahr managed a ninth place with his 2004 996 in class PP06S (Preparation – street-level judging). The TSD Rally is a competitive event, but it is not a race. It is held on public roads at legal speeds,

Another type of rally, the Gimmick Rally, although still competitive, is more of a fun event, where participants drive around the countryside looking for clues; sort of a treasure hunt. Classes are broken down into vehicles with two people, and vehicles with more than two people. The thought is that more eyeballs in the car makes for better chances of spotting all the treasure, but sometimes more people in the car just cause more distraction! Anyway, in the two-person class, Yasha (driver) and Kendra (navigator) Avshalumov took 19th place, and Region President and First Lady David (driver) and Tracy (navigator) Robertson garnered 26th place, but note that this is with 91 competitors in the class! No Mavericks competed in the more-than-two class. The Autocross takes place over two days to allow all entrants to get in four runs each. The course was set up on an airport taxiway, and was short and sweet: most runs were in the 30- to 40-second range. Thirteen representatives of Maverick Region competed. In the Showroom Stock classes, where no modifications are allowed, Fran Ussery took second place in S05W in her showroom-stock 2000 Boxster, while father and son Scott and Seth Stubbs took 16th and 17th place respectively in the very competitive S11O class, driving Fred (Scott’s dad) Stubbs’ 2011 Boxster Spyder. Not to be left out, Pam Stubbs drove the same car to Left: Bill Orr, Enthusiast of the Year Right: Carey Spreen meets the Michelin Man and collects the 2nd place Autocross trophy. second place in S11W, beating husband and son by several tenths of a and is scored based on how well the driver/navigator second! Way to go Stubbs family! And another Maverick team can follow the route instructions, look for signs family, Roger and Heather Briggs, competed in their and landmarks, maintain various average speeds 2010 Panamera Turbo, with Roger taking first place in throughout the event, and arrive neither too early S15O and Heather taking third in S15W. Heather has nor too late at hidden checkpoints along the route. an excuse though: she was in the same class as threeThis year there were four Maverick entries. Joshua time Ladies’ Top Time of Day winner Wendy Shoffit, Gutjahr (driver) teamed up with Vic Rola (navigator) who took first in S15W in her 2017 Macan Turbo. from Smoky Mountain Region in R06 (Unequipped), In the Production classes, where a few performance and came in at 11th place just outside the trophies. modifications are allowed, Carey Spreen took second There were two entries in R05 (Unequipped Plus): Fran place in a 1987 924S in class P03O, while Sue Crimm (driver) and Carl (navigator) Ussery took home fifth drove the same car to first place in class P03W, followed place trophies, and Don Breithaupt (driver) and Carey by Geneva Spreen, also driving the same car, in second Spreen (navigator) earned first place trophies, also place in the same class. (Geneva’s dad was very pleased taking fourth place overall out of 98 entrants. In R04 with those results too!) Josh Gutjahr (just edged out of (Unequipped Navigational), long-time TSD rallyists a trophy by 5/100 of a second, courtesy of his dad Bob Myra (driver) and Jerry (navigator) Sutton won fifth Gutjahr in the same car) took fourth in P10O driving place trophies. Congratulations all! 21

Seth Stubbs took third place in the age 15-17 class. Good showing Seth! There were a couple of non-Porsche-related events as well. David and Tracy Robertson, along with teammates Jeffery Hammond and Betsy Meyer, took third place in the Golf Tournament. The Parade also puts on a 5K Run/Walk; Josh Gutjahr won a first place trophy in the Male age 20-29 class, while Tracy Robertson took fifth place in the Female age (dare I say it?) 50-59 class, Greg Sebert placed third in the Male age 50-59 class, and Don Sebert ran away (get it?) with fourth place in Male age 70 and over. Nice job all! So if any of this sounds interesting, make plans to attend a future Porsche Parade. The 2019 event takes place in Boca Raton, FL, while in 2020 it moves to Palm Springs, CA. Both are roughly the same distance from DFW, but will Left: Ed Mayo Right: Betsy Meyer, Jeffery Hammond, David and Tracy Robertson with golf trophies be wildly different environments. We don’t yet know where the 2021 event The Technical and Historical Quiz is a sort of trivia will be, but because they cycle west-central-east, that quiz for Porsche geeks, consisting of 50 general questions one should be closer to home. Hope to see you there! about any Porsche topic you can think of, plus 25 more questions about the specific model of Porsche that the Myra Sutton, Jack Stephenson, Jerry Sutton, Rik Larson with rally trophies entrant chose. There are also five tie-breakers which are counted only when there is a tie between two entrants in the same class. Scores are calculated two ways: For class winners, the model-specific questions are given three times the weighting of the general questions, while for overall winners, the general questions have three times the weighting of the model-specific ones. In class-specific competition, Alan Bambina placed fourth in Q01M, the 356 class; Josh Gutjahr came in third in Q05M, the 996/997/991 class; and Carey Spreen came home with a trophy for second place in Q06M, the 914 class. In overall quiz competition, Carey Spreen came in third in the Men’s division. No one can say that Bob and Lady Waddell at the Maverick Region doesn’t have its Autocross Banquet share of Porsche geeks! The Art Show had Maverick representation as well: Alan Bambina won second place in the Artisan Crafts category for his handmade wooden jewelry box in the form of a Porsche crest, with each element of the crest being a jewelry drawer. Very clever! There were two RC Car races this Alan Bambina’s handmade year – one on a road course and an Porsche jewelry box off-road version. On the road course, his 2004 996, the same car he had entered in both the Concours and TSD Rally! The Improved classes allow more radical modifications. Ed Mayo’s 1967 911S was on the edge between being a Production car and an Improved car, so he entered it in Improved just to be safe. He took second in class I01O, beaten by just 3/100 of a second by a driver piloting the ultimate autocross car (in this author’s opinion, anyway), a 914. Julia Underwood also took second place in I01W, driving Ed’s 911. Congratulations to all of our Autocross competitors!

As a result of the outstanding content and technical advances in past submissions, PCA decided to create an award for the Best Overall Region Website. The award was first presented at Parade in 2012. The Best Overall Region Website Award is presented to the region with highest overall score, regardless of class. The award will not duplicate any National Website Award Class winners. Zone websites are not eligible for this award. The award serves to demonstrate that the real value of any region website is in effectively serving members of the website’s respective region. The award also demonstrates the fluidity and dynamics of web-based communications and the ability of the regions to adapt new technologies to meet the expectations of their users. Newsletter The Paul Heinmiller Memorial Trophy was previously awarded to the region newsletter judged to be the most outstanding for the year, as part of the PCA Newsletter Contest. The Heinmiller Memorial Award was donated in 1970 by the Porsche+Audi Division of Volkswagen of America. Mr. Heinmiller was a past National Vice President. Under Mr. Heinmiller’s leadership, Porsche Panorama became a professionally executed publication both in physical layout and graphic art, as well as in refinement of its content. Almost every region has members who belong to PCA because of Panorama and who continue to renew their memberships to receive what has become the finest single-marque, club-sponsored publication in the world. The Betty Jo Turner Newsletter Award for Newsletter Excellence was created in 2012 to recognize retiring Panorama Editor Betty Jo Turner. This award replaced the Paul Heinmiller Memorial Trophy, which was retired.

For the PCA Newsletter Contest, regions compete in one of five classes, based on region membership as of December 31st of the competition year. Basing the classes on region membership is intended to ensure that regions competing for the five separate class awards have reasonably equal resources. The Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence does not duplicate any of the class awards. The evaluation criteria are: Information and Navigation; Overall Layout and Appearance; Editorial Commentary; Event Publicity and Follow-Up; Photography and/ or artwork (Illustrations, Clipart); Technical Articles and Automotive Tips; Availability in Digital Format to Members; Features and Article Contributions from Members; and General Scope and Variety. Top editors from around the country are selected to help with the judging of other regions’ newsletters. They assign scores for each category. Points are given for the number of issues published by the region during the year. Once class winners have been decided, the top entry from each class is then re-evaluated by a second set of judges to determine the overall winner of the Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence. Enthusiast of the Year The Glenn Lazar-Harry Blanchard Memorial Trophy was established by the late Bruce “King Carrera” Jennings as an annual award to be presented to the region member who best exemplifies the spirit and guidelines of PCA. The award is more commonly known as the “Enthusiast of the Year” Award. The recipient is a true “Porsche Enthusiast” and an outstanding member of PCA. The recipient is an exemplary participant in region activities and shows initiative in support and organization of ongoing activities and the development of new activities. Any active member of the Porsche Club of America is eligible for this award, with the exception of any person serving in a position on the PCA National Staff during the award year.

Autocross Event 6: Mirrorcross at Mineral Wells By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by LightSpeed Images

The Porsche Parade took away some of our usual autocross participants, and the extreme heat on the vast Mineral Wells pavement made it a tough day for those who did come out for the final MirrorCross dual course event of the season. Everyone was happy that the final four events will be back at the nice and shady Lone Star Park site in Grand Prairie. P1 - 'PCA 1' Total Entries: 2

Mirrorcross is a dual side-by-side drag-race style start with a very quick first straight followed by a few difficult turns before the courses peel off in opposite directions and look like a normal autocross layout.

Owen Coulman was fastest Porsche in his 996 GT3, with the Farnham family GT4 right behind him. Steve and Sherry best run reaction times (RTs) of 0.807 and 0.539 to Owen’s best at 0.539. Owen demonstrated the terrific GT3 acceleration and weight transfer to lay down a stunning 1.855-second 60-foot time. Interestingly, the 914 2.0 driven by Mark and Sigrid Schnoerr was cutting 0.611 and 0.609 best RTs and, demonstrating the light weight and perfect 60-foot in first gear, laid down times almost identical to the GT4 to that spot. Of course the GT4 motored away after that. Next event at Lone Star Park is set for September 16. Hope to see you there!

Due to surface imperfections, the course are rarely exact opposites, which was made clear by the time differences between the left and right courses. The participants swapped sides after each run for a total of six attempts to set their fastest time on each side, which were added Above: Owen Coulman and his 996 GT3 Below: Amir El-Baghady’s 944 S2, Carolle Lui and her 987 Boxster together for overall class position. The start is very exciting because of the real drag race style Christmas Tree countdown start, staging lights, reaction time, and 60-foot time that a critical to set your fastest time. A perfect reaction time is 0.500 seconds. Less than that is a red light DNF, while more than that means you left some time at the start. The 60-foot time tells how well you got off the start and made it count by getting the power down.

Mavs & Mochas: Neiman Marcus By Bill Bradley Three things need to be said before any discussion as to why over 100 Porsches could gather in a covered parking garage in Willow Bend Mall to celebrate the Porsche Cabriolet.

1. Thanks to our host Neiman Marcus for providing coffee and breakfast tacos and for the use of their facilities. 2. Thanks to Park Place Dallas for sponsoring the event, as well as congratulations on the opening of their Grapevine branch. 3. Lastly, thanks to the early-rising Mavericks who assisted in getting everyone properly parked and setting up a table with club information, decals, and Porsche whatnot. Rain had been forecast, so these folks had thoughtfully provided microfiber towels so that club members could remove the water spots from their vehicles. Some actually did. It should be added that it was still raining outside the confines of the parking garage. So many of us, including yours truly, contented ourselves with conversation and drinking coffee. I set up a folding chair in front of my 2006 Cabriolet, which was parked amongst twenty of her representative 26 September

A little after ten o’clock, Porsches began leaving their neat rows in the parking garage. Their passengers were about to become shoppers. At this point yours truly folded up his chair, said goodbye to those around him, and exited the parking garage. Yes, it was still raining.

New Member Perspective by Aaron Hutton

This was my first social event, as I’ve owned the car only about 3 weeks now. I came out to a midmonth unofficial gathering, but that was only a handful of cars. Even with the rain, it still looked like a ton of cars and people at this gathering! So I shyly parked out on the outskirts, for a couple of reasons: 1) I’m terrible at parking nose-out, so giving myself lots of room is a good idea. I’m practicing though and doing it in the Cayman isn’t too bad since it’s smaller than I’m used to. I’m not worried about hitting anything - more like I don’t want to try 3 times to get it right. Then again, it only took me twice, so maybe I’m improving. 2) My poor Cayman still has adhesive haze all over the hood from a clearbra that was left on much longer than it should have. Didn’t want too many people looking too closely at it! I did get to meet a few new people, but being the newbie, the conversations were fairly brief as folks were often engaged with folks they knew better. But I got to say hi to Bill B, Peter, plus got my license plate frame (thanks Bill O!). We had a great time though, and I’m really looking forward to the next M&M with the 80’s theme! I brought my 16 year old daughter with me and as we pulled in she started getting anxious about her appearance, saying “Oh my god there’s so many expensive cars here, dad! I should have dressed nicer or done something better with my hair!” Haha... well not sure what to tell you kiddo, I was pretty clear about where we were going! She looked great by the way so I’m not sure what she was stressed about. To whomever owns the cabriolet with the blue full leather interior, that’s gorgeous. Thank you for putting the top down so I could get up close! Looking forward to the next event!

PCA Tours: A Tour to (and on) the Track By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair

We are back from our short summer break for the fifth Tour this year, and boy do we have a treat for you! This will be our annual charity tour to MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, TX. MotorSport Ranch is a country club for automotive enthusiasts at an awesome race track. We will start the tour on Sunday, September 23 in Mansfield, TX at 10 am. The drive will be 56 miles long and will not have a rest stop. This is a great route, and many of our drive leaders have nicknamed an area of it “The Enchanted Forest”, and for good reason. We will be visiting the track while our Maverick Region High-Performance Driving Education program is underway. If you have ever been interested in attending an HPDE and want to know

what it’s like, this tour is for you. For an optional $30 donation you can take your car out on the track for some parade laps! Parade laps are not at a pace that is slow, as in a street parade, nor is it too fast. This will be my third time doing them, and everyone I have talked to gets excited while sharing their experience afterward. After the parade laps, we will have a catered lunch that is also optional. Catering will be provided by Roscoe’s Smokehouse. They will be serving five types of meat including ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, and sausage. The sides will be coleslaw, potato salad, and BBQ beans. Dessert will be peach cobbler and tea will also be provided, all for $16 per person. All proceeds for this tour will be donated to Patriot PAWS, which provides service dogs at no cost to disabled American veterans with mobile disabilities and PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, to help restore their physical and emotional independence. You can find more information on Patriot PAWS or any of our other of our preferred charities at mav.pca.org/about/charity. Donations can also be made at any time at that address. You must register for the tour at http://mav.pca.org/ Events/Tours/. We have two classes now on our tours. Choose Vintage Class for a more relaxed scenic tour, or Modern Class for the same type of tour that we have provided in the past. Whichever class you choose it is your decision, no matter the type of Porsche you drive. Three days before the tour date, we will send you all the information you need to attend. We hand out packets the day of the tour with all the information as well.

The Drivers Briefing begins at 10 am so please arrive early so that you are signed in on time. Most tour attendees arrive early to meet new friends and socialize with both new and familiar faces. Arriving early also helps our volunteers get everyone signed in on time so the tour is on schedule. No special navigation will be needed. Our Group Leaders will be familiar with the route and will guide each group of 14 cars or less along the route. If you have any questions about the event please email tours@mavpca.org. 31

Back in the day when we had blue laws, auto crossing at the malls. I was terrible at it but loads of fun.

The best PCA memories are always about the people. Did you know? Steve started both the auto-x series (with Hiram Saunders and Bill Dawson back in 1981) and the Maverick DE program (with Bryan Henderson at MSR back in 1999).

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor By Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

David mentioned the pride he has being president of the Maverick Region. That pride is well deserved, and shared by the volunteers and active members of the club. If you haven’t been to an event recently or don’t happen to follow social media, you might not be aware that Maverick Region is one of the largest, most active clubs in the country. Really! Carey gave us a great look of some of the winners at Porsche Parade this year. Pictured to the right are three of the awards Jim Hirsch and Bill Orr brought home. Best Newsletter cover, Second Place in the Newsletter Contest and Best Website in Class V. Nevermind that Bill Orr was named Enthusiast of the Year. In fact, we had so many winners I couldn’t fit all of the results and photos from

Parade in the newsletter this month. Because of that, I’ll be putting together an expanded Slipstream for the online edition at mav.pca.org, check it out. As for me, I’ll be heading down to Austin for Schnellfest at COTA. And since my on-track exploits have been few and sordid, I’m focusing on the potential for improvement. My son keeps reminding me that slow and steady wins the race, but fast and steady is way more fun. I can see the insurance premiums already. Luckily I have some time to save up. II almost forgot - with so many Porsche events coming up, we’d love to have your take on the experience. If you are going to Rennsport or Treffen or any of the out of town events and would like to share your thoughts, drop me a line. As always - Enjoy the Drive!
