Taycan. Rhymes with icon. With life getting back in motion, now is the perfect time to discover a classic in the making: Taycan. It’s the first all-electric Porsche sports car, with two permanent-magnet synchronous motors generating up to 750 hp and acceleration faster than a skydiver in free fall. Plus, an 800-volt battery that can be partially recharged to add up to 62 miles of range in just over five minutes. And at Park Place, this new Porsche icon comes with a total commitment to sanitation, safety and comfort every time you visit the dealership.

That’s what makes Park Place feel like Your Place.

Board Botschaft: Looking Forward by Bill Kruder, Region President Well it’s been a few months since I last sat down to write my Board Botschaft. Think we can sum up the first half of the year as like trying to do the Texas Two Step to the tune of a Waltz . . . let’s just say it hasn’t been easy. By now I’m sure you are as tired as I am of trying to follow along with “Is the event on still? Has it been moved? Is it safe to even go?” What I’d like you to know first and foremost is, as a board member and as the President, we put great thought into the decisions that have to be made. For instance, we do our best to follow the state, county, and city guidelines, and they often vary around the metroplex. Once we feel like we can comply, we ask ourselves “can we keep our members safe?” Then lastly, we ask “does it look and feel right?” This sometimes is the most important. We can follow all the guidelines possible, but if someone – anyone - perceives it to be irresponsible or frivolous, we end up on the losing side. So yes, we have had many a disappointment this year with our 400+ attendee All Member Party being postponed not once but twice (now March 21, 2021). Our Volunteer & Sponsorship Appreciation get together has yet to happen. Not to mention DEs and Mavs & Mochas that have been cancelled or moved. But as Mavericks, we don’t stop our members and volunteers from figuring out how to get together safely. We had many a first with both a virtual tech session and a virtual Mavs & Mochas. We have conducted our board meetings virtually, and coming up, we will have the next couple monthly Happy Hours virtually. Now how about those Pop Ups! We don’t lack for those on any given weekend starting on Friday (Flower Mound), Saturday (Keller and other locations) and Sundays (Frisco) most of which can all be found on our social media pages. So what does the future of our club activities look like you ask? That would be a big “we don’t know.” What we do know is we will continue to plan events that meet what we think is safe as mentioned above. Again some of the events may feel a bit

different. An example is our Tours. They are smaller in registered attendees by design; historically over 100-120 attendees, not the current 50-60 to be safe. Our Rallies too are designed to be paperless and contactless with attendees limited to 15-20 cars but with more “episodes” as Ginger now calls them. Lastly, I would like to again thank all the volunteers who plan the events only to have me change them. To you members thank you for your patience as we navigate thru all this. We appreciate you more than ever! Until I see you out again soon, know your safety is our primary concern, and keep in mind not everyone has the same comfort level during these unprecedented times, so be safe and be kind.

MAV OF THE MONTH: Pat Carmichael Pat has been with PCA close to 12 years. Sometimes the smallest ideas can have the biggest impact on our social activities. Pat is like many of us in that he enjoys a cup of coffee and conversations. Here recently our larger club coffee events have been halted, but why should that stop everything as long as it can be done so safely? Pat has been a big part of keeping our friendly “Porsche Pop-Ups” going strong. Most weeks you can find a social media event posting from Pat letting our fellow Mavs know that you might just see a bunch of Porsches popping up at a local coffee shop on a Saturday or Sunday morning. At times during the cooler months, you might see that he has selected a local breakfast diner. It’s kind of like Porsches Pop-Up & Pancakes (or sticky buns, for the Crossroads Diner fans). Pat is a frequent attendee of the Mavs & Mochas events. He has contributed to Slipstream many times by providing a recap article detailing the event and giving us the stats on the number of Porsches that attended. Pat is just one of many individuals who keeps our coffee gatherings going so that we have something to look forward to each week. This small gesture is what Driving Friendships is all about and is a wonderful reminder of how our club stays Fueled By Volunteers. Please join me in Congratulating Pat as our Maverick of the Month. 2 September

Who represents this exclusive group? Our MRPCA active members who have held membership in the PCA for a minimum of 20 years and held an elected Executive Board position (President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer). This select group made our club what it is today! I am just lucky enough as President to be its current caretaker, doing my best to model what

Keith Olcha Steve Perrin Robert Reich Brian Scudder James Shoffit Wendy Shoffit Barbara Smith Thomas Snodgrass Don Spaulding Carey Spreen John Stahl Jerry Sutton Fran Ussery Michael Wingfield

these people did for some 58 years, and ensure I continue it moving forward and stronger than ever. The sign of any great organization or business is just that. With that being said, I reached out to several of our Crest Club inductees and asked them to share a moment during there leadership period. Take note of the membership numbers and how we have grown. -Bill Kruder, Region President

Barry Gibbs, President 1973; Members: 175 1973 was a long time ago and my memory that far back is a little fuzzy. I think that was the first year that we had a weekend trip to Point Venture on Lake Travis. Lots of driving in the Hill Country, dinner Saturday night, and autocross on Sunday morning. I think Maverick Region had that event two years. Don’t remember why there were only two. The thing that sticks in my mind is how few of the really active members are still around. Some have moved, sold their cars, or just got old and are no longer with us. Charlie Davis was my nemesis for many years. His ’69 S was just faster than my lowly ’69 T, but we had a lot of fun. And, I actually won a few times! There were many more: the Corbeilles, the Rickets, the Cowans, Dr. George, and on and on.

Fran Ussery, President 1984; Members: 395 I was not the first female President and had big shoes to fill following Joan Gibbs. But 1984 was a jam-packed year. Maverick Region set new attendance records and introduced new types of events. My goal was to encourage more involvement by families and especially the ladies of the club. We had skating parties, a fashion show luncheon, and developed events that brought out the whole family. Because I loved autocross, encouraging more women to participate was my special interest, and I was proud of the growth of competitive female drivers and leaders in the club, and the fun family events. Linda Bambina, Secretary 1985 and VP 1991; Members: 564

VP: These were the years when the Vice President was in charge of John Halla, President 1977; Members: 172 monthly dinner/program meetings at local restaurants/hotels. We did Attending the 1977 Porsche Parade in San a select menu with a fixed price Diego, I was surprised to learn upon arriving and the trick was to find a place on that there was to be a reception, for Region a Saturday night that would let us Presidents only, where the Guest of Honor was to dominate a space from 6:30-9:30! be Ferry Porsche himself and his wife Dorothea. Once the program was a Talent Show The trip out was memorable, as I rode shotgun with Ed and Jan doing a lip sync and with Charlie Davis in his 2.8-liter 1972 911S, Alan playing four chords on his new “Voodoo.” He allowed me to drive some legs, banjo! I dressed up as Dolly Parton too. After a couple of days on the road, I will (“Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”) always remember him opening the sunroof for Linda Bambina. I’m told this is her singing and dancing with crazy the first time, and gulping in that wonderful fresh usual Sunday morning attire. Maverick friends! Secretary: These were the years 72˚F San Diego air. Anyway, the reception went that the club literally gathered at Ussery Printing to as planned, and I was able to get some face time with collate pages, staple, trim edges, apply labels, and then Dr. Porsche himself, and a few words with Dorothea. sort the Slipstream into zip codes so we could then drive “Ferry” was relaxed, and very easy to talk to. A nice those yucky canvas bags over to the FW Post Office couple, whose names aren’t known now, agreed to snap Distribution Center by the night’s deadline! We did a photo of Dr. Porsche and myself. After the picture this EVERY month for YEARS and called the event a arrived in the mail, I framed it. It’s been on the wall Slipstream Party! ever since. One could say it was a “dream-come-true,” except I wouldn’t have even known to dream such a dream. Later during that year, for the 1977 Time Trial Alan Bambina, President 1986-87; Members: 337 season at Oak Hill Raceway, I grabbed a 1st place in the 2.2-2.4 911T and 911E class. The year, 1987. I was serving my second Joan Gibbs, President 1983; Members: 337 year as President primarily because the I was the first girl President with a three year old, board didn’t want to Bryan, and of course Barry! So what else did I have to have an election and a do but be President of the club? There were so many change of staff with the volunteers that year - probably afraid, and rightly so, PCA Parade looming that I didn’t know what I was doing! I appreciated all ahead. On top of all the help and loved the friendships. The ‘69 911T had the regular duties of moved to Houston, then came the 914 2.4-liter zoomthe office, Linda and zoom car, and I drove the ’78 911 SC daily. Bryan’s I were registrars for friends loved the carpooling in my yellow Porsche. the Parade and had an 7

additional computer (one of the region’s first) in our home office. I even had a second phone line installed just for the registrations. We’d teach school all day, come home, and enter data all evening. The rewards for all this work was the first day of the Parade at check in, seeing all my old friends from all over the country gritching about the heat in Texas, but happy to be here. Then again at the Concours Banquet, seated on the dais alongside all the folks who put this event together. What an honor. Jan Michel (Mayo), Treasurer 1987 and 1995; Members: 527 Well, how do you find one pivotal moment in 40 years of Maverick PCA? Partial history: I joined Maverick Region in 1980 (around 300 members); I was Treasurer multiple years as well as for Parade ’87, Secretary a couple different times, Slipstream Editor several years, Zone 5 Rep 1997-2002, Parade Chair 2004, then National Award Chair 2007-2010. Pick an outstanding moment?? Being Parade Chair 2004 was a fun time. I had an incredible set of people all doing their jobs! I just sat back and watched. Ed Mayo, President 1991-92; Members: 564 I noted in one of my last columns that at least I never got the club involved in a middle eastern war . . . quite proud of that! On an interesting note, I did award the “Selcer” trophy to Julia Underwood for her great job as editor. When you see Julia, ask her why her column was labeled “itor.” Autocross rules and events were a big part of region life at that time. We often had 50 entries at our autocross and time trial events and that’s JUST Porsches! During this time we also had autocross schools. There was usually a large contingent of Mavericks going to out-of-region events in Santa Fe, Whiskey Bay Region (Louisiana), Corpus Christi, Austin, San Antonio and where ever Parade was. I think swap meets were also popular events back then. And who can ever forget Linda Bambina’s “costume concours?” Brian Scudder, President 1998-99; Members: 774 I feel honored to be in the Crest Club. I did not do that much, in fact I think I was falling asleep at a “Bored” Meeting and the next thing I knew I was running unopposed for President. Then I tried to hold Maverick Region together for the next two years. I have been thinking of writing a book on my two years as President, and VP, and Secretary, and Club Race Chairman. One of the most memorable times was receiving the Region of the Year Trophy at the 1998 Porsche Parade in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Maverick Region has always been a strong region with its size of area, 8 September

membership diversity, depth of events, and can-do attitude. Winning the trophy the second time shows that the region has continued to grow and remain strong. I rediscovered a gift that was given to me at Founders Day, an album with notes written on paper cutout hands thanking me for my service as president. This means a lot - thank you. Alan Lage, Secretary 2000; Members: 905 Highlights of my time as Maverick Region Secretary . . . the start of the region DE program and instructor clinic at the then new MotorSport Ranch race track in Cresson . . . 6 am Saturday morning drives to the Mineral Wells Airport where, as Time Trial coordinator, I was in charge of setup, teardown, etc. of our official Maverick Region’s track, the Mineral Ring . . . and of course our lively discussion board meetings at Brian Scudder’s house, which included free beer and pizza. There may have been some lively Porsche driving competitions leaving those meetings! James Shoffit, President 2001-02 and 2007-08; Members: 954 I joined the club in ‘97 to autocross the 1990 911 I had just bought. Brian Scudder was the President of the Maverick Region my first year in the club. Charlie Davis was President next and he was instrumental in my decision to run for President. James and Wendy Shoffit. I’m told this is not their usual attire.

Keith Olcha, President 2003-2004; Members: 1006 A highlight of being President was lobbying PCA National to take over the 2004 Porsche Parade from another region that was having issues. We had a great team of Parade-knowledgeable volunteers who worked tirelessly and made it a success. It was exciting being part of some of the committees and visiting prospective venues. We rented the entire Texas Motor Speedway to have the autocross in their giant parking lot and held a club race inside on the racetrack as well as activities in the infield. Streets were blocked off and the Concours was held in downtown Fort Worth. It was magical!

Wendy Shoffit, Secretary 2014-18; Members: 893-1374 During my four-year tenure as Secretary from 2014-2017 I served under three different presidents (John Hamilton, Jim Falgout, and David Robertson). Membership at that time seemed to start really going up after our 50th club anniversary. Evidence of this was attendance at the New/All Member Party that had a new venue and record attendance every year from 2014 when we had over 250 new, old, and potential members (previous events were in the ~100 range)! Organized by Tracy Robertson, we learned how to really get people excited about the club that we all know and love. Wendy and Jasmine Shoffit with an apparently carnivorous 996. We are approaching Halloween after all.

Mavs & Mochas: Orange Cones Edition by Pat Carmichael

Porsche, orange cone, Porsche, orange cone, Porsche, repeat - the little orange cones marshaling a reminder to space apart; to stay socially distancing!! It was an appreciated theme that repeated for 160+ cars covering pretty much the entire parking lot in front of Weir’s Furniture. A great socially-distanced turnout on a beautiful Saturday morning!! The PCA Mavericks under the Park Place tent and in the shadow of a brand new Porsche Macan were moved to be a charitable group as well, collecting almost $1,200 for breast cancer (awesomeness!!) AND donating 725 pounds of food along with $250 in cash (to be matched by the PCA Mavericks club!!!) donations to the Good Samaritan North Texas Food Bank in Garland. In fact there was so much food donated we had to enlist the help of the On Site Tires truck; these guys are Slipstream advertisers and participants in Mavs & Mochas, and

photos provided by Landon Stogner & Scott Sheetz

volunteered to help deliver to the food bank! Way to go guys!! Did I mention it was a great morning? It was a great sunny morning. Good to see good friends and family along with just being out and about. Bumping fists, elbows, or just waving and trying to recognize everyone behind their masks - it was good to just be seen and, what it’s all about, seeing all the Porsche cars lined up between the little orange cones!! See y’all next month!!

Thank you very much for greeting me into your special organization of so many special, professional, and caring people in the PCA/Mavericks. So many members came by the Light Ivory 1965 356C coupe today. I only answered questions, so professional that they waited until another Mav to come up and ask me more. When this happens so extemporaneously for almost 1.5 hours, you know it was a great day! Members came up and I asked them what they drove to the event. Most had late model +6 figure machines, but to say the 356’s were maybe their favorites through the years. Being a novice here, I can only say that today was one of my best encounters of the Porsche Kind…… Guess we are all out of this world, or should be. -Wes Pettinger

Driver Profile: Reid Cloud, White 2015 Cayman S by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair member of UNT’s Formula SAE team from 2014-2016. It was always a blast to drive the FSAE car and I could never get enough of that experience. After I graduated, I fell off the wagon and didn’t do much in the way of autocrossing for the next three years. After I got hired and had been working for a couple of years at Peterbilt Motors, one of my buddies who I knew from SAE invited another friend and myself out to an SCCA autocross event. I can’t recall why, but I would always have plans or other obligations almost every time he asked. After about three months, I finally was able to go to my first non-SAE autocross with my Cayman in the summer of 2019. After I experienced that first event, I couldn’t get over how much fun it was. After a couple of SCCA events I learned about the different groups in Top: Reid getting his autocross game face on the DFW Bottom: His 2015 Cayman S being put to good use region and started going Reid Cloud: “I am a 26 year old to as many as I DFW native who graduated from could until the the University of North Texas with end of the season. a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Can you tell us a little about you, your driving background and how you prepared your 2015 Cayman S?

16 September

So my total experience with autocrossing a full size vehicle is somewhere around nine months to a year. My car is a 2015 Cayman S and its setup is pretty basic as I have it classed in SCCA A-Street or P3 in ER. All I’ve really done to the car is an alignment and wheels/tires which ended up being around -1.5 degrees in the front/rear and about 1/8” toe out in the front and 0 toe in the rear. I believe the wheels are OZ Alleggerita, with 245/40 and 275/40 Nexen NFera SUR 4G 200 tread wear tires. My ideal setup would include a set of 255 and 285 width tires and the X73 suspension package. As it sits now, the car is awesome to drive and loves being driven to the limit. I am signed up for the event on 8/23 and I can’t wait to see the course you have made for us. Mark: So there really is nothing to it!

Covid-19 Pandemic directives have accelerated in the DFW area but Andy Cost, the President of our AutoCross partner, Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club, working with Lone Star Park and the Dallas County, did all the documentation and registrations to gain a permit for up to 100 entries for this event; 92 actually entered, and got in a total of 552 runs. Maverick Marktpreis: 997.1 by Peter Wen I’ve met a lot of people through my work and over my life. Inevitably, as soon as they find out I am a Porsche owner, their eyes light up and they share their dreams of owning one someday. With a modest budget, my advice to them is always the same: check out the Generation 997.1 911s. They are good buys, or dare I say, good investments. Price Surprise! The 997.1 is already at the bottom of its depreciation curve. Over the last three years, pricing has flatlined. The Carrera S has actually

increased in value, up from the 2019 level. Very encouraging news for this young generation. Performance The 997.1 is a bona fide sports car for the new millennium. Equipped with the Sport Chrono Package and the Sports Exhaust, even a base Carrera can pull 0-60 mph in the mid-4 seconds! Can’t-miss options, such as the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Carbon-Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) catapult the 997.1 to world class sports car status.

Look & Feel The Goldilocks of modern Porsches, it’s neither too big nor too small. Its feedback-rich hydraulic power steering feels just right. Better yet, it still looks like a classic 911. This generation has aged gracefully. Beautiful. Gen 997.1 is a good buy. It’s an investment you can enjoy now and trade up to your dream P-cars later. If your budget allows, I highly recommend the Gen 997.2 examples as well. We reviewed them in the January, 2020 issue of Slipstream.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder Let’s see - how did we meet? Oh that’s right, over coffee (laughing) where else? Our first encounter was in 2015 at an early Mavs & Mochas; think it was Pearl Cup in Richardson. As I recall we showed up early as usual, to find the center, including Pearl Cup, with no power. Ok, so now what do we do? Well, he drives up, and I was telling each arrival “go down the street to Starbucks and get your coffee and come back!” So he leaves and about 20 minutes later he’s back not with his coffee but a 96 oz. coffee traveler for us to share until the power came back on. Well for those of you that know him, coffee is his passion, (ok, so are IPA’s)! Matter of fact, for the last couple years he has created the FloMo pack that meets every Friday, and I mean every Friday, at Novel Roasters in Flower Mound. So if you find yourself wanting some fellowship over coffee, don’t miss out.

photos provided by author BK: How long have you lived in DFW now? BB: We moved to Keller in I think about 1969, then to Lewisville to be close to Judy’s office. We then moved to Flower Mound, or FloMo as we call it, about 6-7 years ago.

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Bill Bradley, enthusiast since 1962 Owner 2006 997 Cab Bill Kruder: Let’s start off with the usual. Where the heck are you from? Bill Bradley: Well that’s kind of interesting actually, as I was born in White Plains, NY, which is about 3040 miles north of Manhattan more or less, up I-95. We lived there till my dad took a job at Princeton University in Top: Bill and Judy Bradley New Jersey, as the Business Manager Bottom: Pup with a view at the Institute for Advanced Study. When I was 13 my dad passed away BB: I know you had a long Penney so we moved back to White Plains Co career so you will appreciate to live with my grandmother. I then this bit of trivia. When I was in lived there till I graduated high school high school 1954-58 I worked as an in 1958. Interesting note though, my orderly at a rehab center in White mom remarried and moved back to Plains. Well one of the patients there Princeton so I always considered both was Caroline Autenrieth Penney, my home. 20 September

the third wife of JC. Apparently she had a riding accident fracturing her cervical vertebrae resulting in longterm care. BK: How about College? BB: Well that too is interesting; shall we say I was not the best student (laughing). I started at Bard College - it’s on the Hudson north of West Point. So that lasted about a year. I took a break, then I attended Drew University, which is about 40-50 minutes outside Manhattan in Madison, New Jersey. To make a long story short I finally went back to school and graduated from East Tennessee, Johnson City, Tennessee with a B.A in Philosophy in 1966. BK: Now we have talked before that you spent time in the military? BB: I did. I had joined the Army Reserves during one of my breaks in college. By doing so when I graduated from college, not only did I get my degree but I now was a commissioned officer, a 2nd Lieutenant. I did two tours in Vietnam; the first was in 1968 right when the Tet Offensive ended. The second tour started after they had sent me stateside. They sent me to Ft Hood, the one place I said I did not want to go. I was there six months and asked to be sent back to Vietnam, as I wanted to be in the field. All in all I was active duty for four years. BK: During those four years you did a lot and have been decorated several times. BB: That I did. I was awarded the coveted Combat Infantryman Badge along with the Distinguished Flying Cross both awarded for gallantry in action. BK: Now tell me about how you and Judy met (to avoid confusion: Judy

is Bill’s wife and Lucille is his car)? BB: Coming out of the service I found myself at Ft Sill in Lawton, OK. Shortly thereafter I was at a pool party at my apartment and there she was. We were both going to grad school at University of Oklahoma. We dated for about a year before we got married in 1973, 48 years ago. BK: So what field of work did you do with your philosophy degree? BB: What most do, something else (laughing). I was in the hydraulic component business as a Regional Manager that dealt with distributors of our product to the factory. M.P. Filtri in Milan, Italy was my employer, which allowed Judy and me to travel the world.

followed by a 1970 914/6 (bought this car brand new), and let’s just say it was not the greatest when you live in OK with no air conditioning. Only had about four months before I bought a Vette with AC (laughing). BK: Let’s fast forward to “Lucille.” How did this happen? BB: Well I had a company car, a Volvo S60 Turbo; mind you this was no slouch of a car. But not many know that Volvo of Dallas has this exotic car business and I had heard they had this very nice Porsche in their inventory. I went over to look and traded their Volvo for “Lucille.”

BK: Ok let’s talk cars now. What was your first car? BB: That was in 1961. It was a 1936 Ford five-window coupe. I paid $750 for it and that car was near perfect. That was followed by a SIMCA (French auto maker) that was a four speed on the column of all things. What was unique about it was it had a gasoline heater in the car. BK: Now I know you have been a Porsche enthusiast for 58 years. What was your first? BB: The first was in 1962 between my college years. I was 21 and bought a 1960 356 in Ruby Red. This was

BK: Tell me about these dogs you post on FB? BB: Judy and I bought our first Irish Setter years ago up in Norman. We have bred them for shows since the mid ‘70s; Judy is an AKC judge for the breed. We currently have three, and all are AKC champions. BK: Tell me one thing that not many know about you? BB: Hmmm . . . that I don’t listen to country music (laughing). Actually my grandmother was a Juilliardtrained concert pianist. Well, having lived with her as a kid, I was always around classical music and it stuck. I also have a love of the opera and am lucky enough to have attended an opera at the famed Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Truly it might be the world’s most famous opening in 1778.

And there you have it: Driving Friendships with one of those last Renaissance men. 21

Read. Between the Lines. by Michael Baynton, Tech Session Co-Chair And now for something completely different! Every month we feature several articles that relate to driving our cars—tours, track/AX events, coffee get-togethers, you name it. It’s all about the journey or the destination. But today we are going to discuss a seemingly trivial aspect

Nice alignment, good color, I give it a 9.5

of our shared automotive passion: “fancy” parking. Call it pretentious, overly complicated, or just a convenient canvas for professional and amateur picture snappers alike—what’s the big deal with everyone having to back their Porsches into parking spots when we gather for events? Why can’t we just park like normal people? It’s a great question, and one that had been begging for this little missive for quite some time. There have been lots of offline discussions on how to best dissect this delicate topic, so let’s tackle it with equal parts humor and educational content. There are actually several important reasons why backin parking (or reverse parking) is advantageous. Let’s get the obvious out of the way right up front—it just plain looks cool when all of the Porsches are lined up in a neat little row, deep spoilers and voluptuous fenders preening perfectly side by side as if lined up for the ultimate horse race. Precision is built into every Porsche, and it just seems fitting to pay respect to that ethos when we gather to celebrate our German show ponies. And if you think that’s hyperbole, take a peek at Porsche marketing literature and images through the decades. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Ferry Porsche himself aligned the cars with ruler and plumb bobs. 24 September

photos provided by author Aesthetics aside, there are several practical and safetyrelated benefits to our little parking lot ballet. Since we often share our parking lots with non-Porsche folks, parking “just so” sends a subtle message to others that something amazing might be going on that they are not a part of. This can often help dissuade them from maneuvering their galactic Buick Enclave XXL into a tight spot between a new 992 Turbo and a svelte ’85 Carrera. It’s akin to the herd of buffalo lining up to face the lion’s threat headon. Like nature, it doesn’t always work, but it’s a simple defensive mechanism we can utilize to protect our flanks. And by doing our part to park consistently and neatly centered between the lines, we give each other breathing room to avoid door dings or worse. For our events, it’s also more convenient for ingress and egress. We tend to arrive at different times, so it’s easy to back into a suitable spot when traffic and crowds are smaller. And since most of our PCA events end at a specific time, it’s so much easier for large crowds to disperse quickly and safely when we are all facing in the same direction and have better visual awareness. Most importantly, it’s been shown in many studies that back-in parking is much safer for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Reversing into a defined space is much less risky than backing your Porsche into a parking lot lane filled with distracted pedestrians, departing Mavs and other vehicles eager to get to the next 50%-off sale at Restoration Hardware. Many cities and municipalities actually mandate reverse parking, citing reduced traffic congestion and accidents caused by distracted drivers. Simply put, having a wide field of vision is more important when you’re pulling out of a parking space than it is when pulling in. And another bonus: should you ever have a dead battery, it’s so much easier to get a jump if your engine/ battery is accessible by a good Samaritan or tow service. So, let’s talk Parking 101. To be blunt, this “reversing in” maneuver is second nature to some and a cause of anxiety and agita for others-–especially with judging eyes all around. It’s Porsche performance anxiety of the worst kind! Reading between the lines (See what I did there?), here are a few tips to help ease the fear of a parking faux pas:

1. Remember that most Porsches of recent vintage have

“dipping” side mirrors to help with visibility when you back in. Select either left or right mirror and it should dip down to give a better view of the ground once you put your car in Reverse. Assuming that your parking neighbor

did a reasonable job of staying in his/her spot, you should have 12-24” of space inside each line for your spot. Just keep that line parallel to your path and slowly back in.

2. Check your work! If you

don’t have at least 12” between your Michelins and the white stripe, you’re probably not leaving enough room for your neighbor. And Ooops! remember that one wonky parking job can cause a domino effect of uneven cars. Boom, there goes your shot of making a Slipstream cover. Be kind—realign!

3. At our events, a great rule of thumb is to back in until

your side mirrors line up with the mirrors of your Porsche neighbor. That almost always ensures good alignment and pretty photo ops.

4. Psst--If you arrive early enough, many times you can do the drive-through move with the spot behind and avoid the issue altogether. That’s only sorta cheating…

5. Practice! Grab 4 Gatorade bottles, bright microfiber towels,

or other visible (but expendable!) items and go find a big, unused parking lot early on a weekend morning. Mark off your spot and practice lining up your car evenly between the lines, then slowly back in until you are fully in the spot and centered between the lines. Pro tip: decide which of your three mirrors you are going to use as your primary alignment device, and only use the other two for minor corrections. Parking lot lines are arrow straight—get your alignment right and very little steering wheel adjustment is needed for parking perfection. I guarantee that a few focused minutes will make you a reversing pro. In possibly less time than it took to read this article. Also, YouTube is your friend here!

6. As a last resort, ask for help. If you are still lacking confidence in your parking prowess, ask one of the Mav volunteers to assist you. We can help direct you, and even take over and park your Porsche like the professionals we are. No charge for this service, and no tipping required!

As your loyal servant as Tech Session co-chair, I miss our monthly tech sessions that bring you informative and helpful insights from our amazing partners and advertisers. I can’t wait until these Covid times are in our rear-view mirrors. Until then, I hope this little primer on parking hit the spot.

Christian Community Action Canned Food Drive by Jimmy Gallegos, Region Charity Chair PCA Mavericks participated in another successful drive-through canned food event benefitting Christian Community Center (CCA) in Lewisville. It was another hot Texas summer day, but it did not keep people away from making the Porsche drive to Lewisville to donate 801 pounds of canned food and $500.00 in cash! The Maverick Region matched the cash amount and CCA received $1000.00 cash to help those in need.

“We were to spread His love, not by word, but by our lives and by a caring ministry dedicated to easing the pain and suffering of the least blessed in this world. We listened. We heard. We obeyed. And a ministry was born.” – Tom Duffy, Founder, CCA CCA had 25,000 visits to the Food Pantry in 2019 and served over 1,500 households and over 5,000 individuals through programs and assistance. This has been a successful model, which is now managed by Mr. Gilbert Montez, CEO of CCA. Trent Smith, CCA Director of Strategic Services, helped us coordinate a date and planned a drive-through tent to hand off canned food and cash donations. Mr. Montez has managed to keep several people involved with the North Texas Food Bank affiliate, reaching hundreds of people who are in need especially during the Pandemic

At the drive-through, Mav drivers were greeted by Mr. Montez and Ms. Bobbie Mitchell, Denton County Commissioner, and by Phyllis Gallegos, frantically waving a Porsche flag. Ms. Mitchell initiated a weekly call to coordinate area agencies and check their food supply. They can assist each other to ensure they are meeting the needs of the communities and help other agencies when needed. Communities helping communities! If you’d like to volunteer at a canned food donation event in the future or organize an unofficial pop up drive to the next drive-through, please contact me at charity@ mavpca.org. We want to be sure that all Mavericks have the opportunity to give back in this time of extreme need. Many thanks to Mr. Montez, CCA staff and volunteers and Ms. Bobbie Mitchell. My wife Phyllis and I were grateful to be put in a position to help Christian Community Action Center. Stay tuned for another Canned Food Drive-Through in the future as the need continues to grow. Most memorable Maverick or PCA event

I’ve done several tours, which is a favorite of mine. The drives are fun but the lunch, beverages and people are my favorite part of the club!

Best thing about Porsche ownership

The engineering, the design, the driving experience and their sheer beauty make me happy. I go to my garage for no reason, always take a look back, talk about them non-stop and I have a shameful number of Porsche pics in my phone. I’m in love with these cars.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Let me begin by saying that I will not be discussing, mentioning or referring to any of the words du jour. The ones mostly beginning with the letter “C”. I am fatigued beyond all good sense about that discussion. That is all. Instead, I’ll be focusing on an exchange had at our weekly local Porsche kaffeeklatsch. It began innocently enough as most do, but it quickly turned contentious. (Yes that was a “C” word, I’ll try to do better.) The topic you ask? Shoes. How does one have a discussion about shoes go wrong you ask? Let me try to explain. First some background; topics at our Friday gettogethers vary widely, but one theme seems to reappear quite often. Of course. And because of this, every so often there is talk of looking for an addition to the menagerie. The stockpile? The stash. Whatever, you get my point. The question that usually follows, “so what are you going to get rid of?” (Another disclaimer which I probably should have mentioned sooner; our group is predominantly married men and as such some of our pursuits fall under specific guidelines.) We absolutely owe our wives a debt of gratitude as most of us are not as practical as perhaps we should be when Porsches are involved. Am I good? I’m sure our women enthusiasts deal with the same thing.

36 September

So back to the story, we were having a discussion about one or two of us in the group looking to acquire a new or new to them Porsche. Someone asks what will be leaving to make room for the new addition and then I opened my mouth and started a fire. I asked “does she have to throw out a pair of shoes when she buys a new pair?” Guys, this is a stupid argument and I suggest that you never consider using it. Thinking men that we are, we quickly realized that shoes do not go for the same money as Porsches, but they do run in the same range as a lot of the things we like to put on our Porsches. So we pressed on. Could this be the argument we’re looking for? Exhibit A. Wheels? Manolo Blahnik Exhibit B. Exhaust? Jimmy Choo. (I know, I almost made it, but it’s a proper name so I think that’s a technicality) I have more, but I think I’ve made my point. And before you argue that you wear those things to look nice for us, so do we. We want to deliver you to the opera in an automobile befitting your elegant visage. We want you to be the envy of the men and the women we see on our way to dinner. The grocery store? The track? Are you buying any of this? I definitely should have kept my mouth shut. Well guys, I gave it my best shot. If you need me, I’ll be on the couch. Enjoy her new shoes and enjoy the drive.
