Merry Month of May
There’s a lot happening in May.
Mother’s Day is in the middle of the month so Living has a special feature on Mothers of Mawson Lakes in the centrefold. We asked mothers of all ages for their words of wisdom. See the messages that they are passing on to their children.
For mothers and grandmothers interested in the education of their child/ren, the most important event in Adelaide this month is the School Education Expo at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Here you’ll find a smorgasbord of information on everything educational from Reception to Year 12. It’s a huge FREE community event and a fun day out for all the family, and teachers too, with activities for children, schools, educational services and products, a performance stage, an art studio, chess, other mind games and more . . . See details on page 18.

Event for May
Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the second Sunday in May (13 May in 2012). It is a day to honour mothers and celebrate motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, yet most commonly in March, April, or May.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world; many of these can be traced back to ancient festivals, like the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration.

Allergic reaction to a sting - My dog Muffin and I were walking along The Boulevard near Shearwater Lake when Muffin yelped. Something in the grass had stung him. I pulled out the stinger but within moments Muffin went into shock. His legs collapsed, he started vomiting, his eyes glazed over and he was in pain. When he couldn’t walk I scooped him up and ran home frantically to get the car to take him to the vet. By now his eyes were like volcanoes, his ears were blood red and he was panting rapidly. “Don’t give up on me Muffin,” I cried over and over as we raced to the vet. Immediately Dr Brendan took Muffin into the surgery and gave him some injections and within an hour he was OK. Thank you Dr Brendan for your quick action and caring approach.

Theft of parking spaces - The other day I set out about 11am to go to the supermarket and the chemist. I went round and round the car park but could not get a parking spot. I gave up and went to Parafield Gardens. Who is stealing our parking spaces?

Parking problems a threat to ML businesses
I have lived in Mawson Lakes for 6 years and I have never experienced such bad parking problems in the town centre as I am seeing now. At present I don’t even try to shop in ML. I go to Ingle Farm. I’m sorry about this because I want to support local businesses. I feel I am losing touch with local people because of my changed shopping habits, but if you can’t stop and park briefly, you just keep going. Our little business community is at risk if a solution cannot be found to the parking problems. Meredith.
Recycling – don’t bag it - On recycling bin collection day, when bins are full and raised lids expose the contents, it is common to see material for recycling contained in plastic bags. That is a NO NO. The general rule is rigid plastic is OK, flexible plastic (bags, cling wrap, other thin plastic not OK). The latter can cause sorting equipment to jam up.

Respect for residents - Every week I visit the library in The Mawson Centre and park in the area reserved for community use while I dash in to change my books. Lately, I cannot get a park, no matter what time of day. I have sometimes observed people pull into our designated parking bays, get out of their cars and head in the opposite direction towards the university. We must all share Mawson Lakes but this sort of disrespect for local residents creates bad feeling.

New owners for Bargain City
New owners, Jasmin and Chang, have bought Bargain City in Mawson Lakes, located next to the medical centre.
The couple, who grew up in China where they met and married, came to Australia as students to study accounting at the University of South Australia. Both are in their late twenties and are permanent residents. This is their first business venture.
Chang said Mawson Lakes is a beautiful place to live with good growth potential for business. “With so many houses under construction and the planned development of the new shopping complex we look forward to expanding the business.”
Shortly they will change the business name to Mawson Lakes Discount Variety Shop and in time they will stock a larger range. At present the biggest demand is for party items, gift wrapping and helium balloons but they also
sell stationery, home wares, sporting gear, pet supplies and even makeup and jewellery at very affordable prices.
“If people want a particular product I will try and get it in for them,” said Chang who is eager to develop a reputation for good customer service. Drop in and say hello. Ed.

The origin of the name Mawson Lakes
Mawson Lakes is named after the great Australian scientist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson who is best remembered for his ventures into the wild, unexplored lands of Antarctica.
His mapping and well-documented scientific exploration enabled Australia to claim forty-two percent of Antarctica as Australian Territory.
Mawson was a geologist at the University of Adelaide and it was his theory that Australia and Antarctica were once linked that took him to Antarctica on three expeditions. Mawson’s Australian Antarctic Expedition in 1912 is regarded as one of the most tragic and heroic stories in history.
Mawson was knighted in 1914, and after serving in the First World War he returned to Adelaide and continued his work as a professor of geology devoting much of his time to the exploration of the Northern Flinders Ranges. He died in 1958 in Adelaide aged 76.
The bravery of Mawson in Antarctica and the scope of his life-time scientific achievements, recorded in his book “The Home of the Blizzard” have been an inspiration to generations. Peaks and mountains, buildings and streets, science institutes and suburbs have been named after him. In 1999 Mawson Lakes took his name. Ed.

TIPS FOR AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHS
The South Australian Photographic Federation is a partner in the Mawson Lakes Photographic Competition. They will be presenting workshops on Sunday 22 July. President Alberto Giurelli gives tips below on taking winning photographs
Our photographic media has changed immensely, from film to digital and it’s easy to think that programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, Picasa (just to name a few) will create the magic. Well, let me tell you that the magic still happens in the camera. It’s what you see and how you catch the light that makes a strong image.
A good image is something that moves the viewer and should have moved you when taking it. To produce more interesting images, follow these tips:
Divide the scene in thirds - background, middle ground, foreground.
Groups of odd numbered subjects work better and 3 works best.
Get low or high to change your shooting angle.
Eliminate background elements that don’t belong.
Get in close to your subject, and then a little closer.
Most importantly, read your camera’s manual, whatever camera you use.

at the University of South Australia, said it will be an attractive and functional facility stretching over 9 hectares.
“The plan is for the project to start in mid May and be finished by summer.”
“The precinct which is on university grounds, is part of the university’s vision to provide access for all to university facilities,” said Brian.
The complex plan involves redeveloping the 9 hole golf course and making it more compact, creating a new oval, constructing 3 tennis courts, building a toilet block for community use and installing lighting for night time use.
The existing oval on Mawson Lakes Drive will remain.
The wetlands that traverse the site will be extended and beautified to provide green space for university research and for general
an attractive vista across the green spaces of the university and the redeveloped golf course. This will enhance the view that people have of Mawson Lakes as they travel by car.

What FLOWER is that?
Flowers for Mother’s Day
Cyclamens make is a perfect potted gift for Mother’s Day because they are long flowering through autumn, winter and spring. This is a gift that keeps on giving.
Cut & Blowdry from $39
Full head of foils $90
Half head of foils $59
Some cyclamens are perfumed and they come in a rich tapestry of colours
ranging from white to pink, red and mauve. They have lovely silvery motley marbled leaves, each with a different pattern.
Flowers stand high above the foliage and make a strong show of colour. In the dainty miniature varieties, the entire plant reaches only about 20 cms but puts on a spectacular display for many months. You can buy pots of cyclamen at the garden centre for $10 to $20.
Cyclamens do well indoors and thrive in cool temperatures in a brightly lit spot, especially on a patio or veranda. They don’t like hot stuffy rooms and particularly dislike indoor heating.
Water your cyclamens at ground level whenever the soil feels dry but don’t water the leaves because they can get a fungus problem. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer every couple of weeks while in full leaf.
In the garden cyclamens do well amongst other shrubs and will live for a long time. Ed.

Police alert in Mawson Lakes
Loud helicopters with night lights hovering above, accompanied by police cars on the roads, alerted residents in the early hours that something was wrong in Mawson Lakes. Police were investigating two incidents of serious criminal trespass in Mawson Lakes. Business premises on Salisbury Highway had been targeted at about 3am, however, the offender was disturbed by a security guard. Residential premises in Pike Avenue were targeted at about 3.30am, when the offender used an outdoor chair to gain access to the premises via the second floor. An unsuccessful attempt was also made to enter the garage. It was reported on the news that police caught the suspect.
Manager of the Crime Prevention Section, Senior Sergeant Chris Bettess, asks residents always to report anything suspicious to police on 13 14 44, or 000 in the event of an emergency.
On the Mawson Lakes Living website you can read her simple tips to reduce your risk of burglary and to protect your car. Go to www.mawsonlakesliving.info Look under Community, then go to e-watch. Ed.

Resident Profile: Rebecca Baylis – Aeronautical Engineer
At the age of 26, ML resident Rebecca Baylis has been identified as a future leader of industry.
The aeronautical engineer works for Aeronautical Engineers Australia located in Technology Park, a company that specialises in the design, testing, evaluation and certification for a range of aeronautical applications including continued airworthiness, asset management, aero-medical, commercial aviation and defence.
This year Rebecca was awarded a grant of $10,000 from the Industry Leaders Fund to attend Cranfield University in the UK to study safety and risk mitigation. She also plans to undertake a professional management program to enhance her leadership skills.
Her career in this exciting field can be traced back to school where maths and science were among her favourite subjects. “I always wanted to make a career by using these skills in a practical way,” she said. Her inquisitiveness led to a double degree in Aerospace Engineering and Science and now to her job in Mawson Lakes working with state-of-the-art technology on projects for Defence, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Victorian Police Air Wing.
Chief Executive Officer of Aeronautical Engineers Australia, Mike Aitchison, describes Rebecca as a talented and motivated young woman with a vision for the future. “She is a model in engineering circles, not only because of her aptitude, but because she is determined and loves a challenge. She sets herself big goals and works hard to achieve them.”
Rebecca says she would like to see other women enter male-dominated industries, and through initiatives run by the Defence Teaming Centre at Innovation House, she is a vocal advocate for change in workplace culture and equity.
In 2010, she bought a house at The Cascades,
and enjoys the lakes and parks around the area, while making the most of the running trails and cafès. Ed.

Square codes open websites
You may have noticed square squiggles on advertisements and packaging. You’ll see one on the cover of Mawson Lakes Living and another on the advertisement below.
These boxes are called QR Codes, short for Quick Response Codes. The code is a square black and white pattern that enables a smartphone to effortlessly access a brand’s website bringing the viewer to the advertiser’s site immediately.
To access QR codes, download an app such QRReader (for the iPhone) from the app store, then simply point your phone’s camera at the QR code.
QR technology is expanding so you’ll now see these codes being used in museums, tourist spots, on school notice boards and real estate posters. Once you know what they are you’ll see them everywhere.
Some shop fronts now display a QR code on their windows that can be scanned from the street. You don’t need to go inside.
Here are 3 ways you can use QR codes for your organisation’s sales and marketing efforts:
1Add QR codes to your business cards. You can include your business name and address, website, blog, or even links to your social media. The QR code will let your prospects and peers scan your business card and easily add you to their contacts.
2Include QR codes in your print advertising. You can link prospects to product videos, spec sheets, or “Buy Now” pages. Assigning a URL specific to the QR code in the ad with a re-direct is a great way to track how much traffic came to that page through your print advertisement.
3Create a campaign to increase your social following. Include a QR code to instantly link to your Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn page on print advertisements or direct mail pieces. Ed.

Warning – Brown Snakes in Mawson Lakes
The Brown Snake is one of Australia’s most deadly creatures and brown snakes have been spotted along Dry Creek. They live in the rockeries along the creek and have been observed basking in the sun on the big rocks. They have also been removed from the grasslands near the airport and the grassy area near the train interchange.
Brown Snakes have venom which can cause death to humans relatively quickly if untreated. However, they are not aggressive and they will flee from humans rather than attack.
Snake expert Roger from Snake Catchers at Parafield Gardens said a brown snake bite is particularly dangerous to children and pets and can kill a dog or cat within an hour.
He said he has removed several brown snakes from Mawson Lakes where conditions are good for reptiles due to the abundance of water, hiding places in the rocks and grasses,
and plenty of food, such as lizards and small creatures like mice and birds.
“If your pet is bitten it will froth at the mouth and become unsteady on its legs. Race it to the vet immediately,” said Roger.
Call the Council if the snake is on Council land or call Snake Catchers on 0415 928 500. It will cost $130 for the snake catcher to find and remove the snake. Ed.

Dog Communication by Nigella
You’ve heard of celebrity cooks, well, here’s a celebrity dog trainer who came our way just recently. Brian Kilcommon is a leading dog trainer in America, and lucky for us, he made a guest appearance at PETstock at Parafield. Mummy and I got a front row seat so we could catch every word. He was good. Within minutes he had unmanagable dogs from the audience doing exactly as he commanded.
“Take that barking dog out of here,” insisted Brian to the owners of a disruptive dog. “Have a talk to him and tell him the behaviour you expect and don’t bring him back until he stops barking. If he barks again take him out again.”
Brian went on to explain that humans must be the boss in a dog/human relationship, but a dog must know what is expected of him.
‘No’ is not enough; training must be more than that, said Brian, who travels the world teaching people how to communicate with their dogs.
“Half the dogs on earth think their name is ‘No’ because that is the word they hear most often,” he said.
Brian has seen all sorts of dog behaviour which he said he can trace back to the behaviour of the owners. People expect their dog to behave in a certain way but they haven’t taught the dog how to behave.
The best way to get dogs to do as you want is to make training quick and fun with immediate rewards for the behaviour you desire. “The more you praise, the more effective your corrections will be. Try to turn NO into “YES good dog”. Brian has a lot of material on YouTube which you can view for more advice.

Dogs of the month
Pet care with Dr Brendan
Getting older is a fact of life for our pets as well as us, their owners. As we age, the need to look after ourselves becomes all the more important. A good diet, the right exercise regime and regular health check-ups all help to maintain good health into later life.
For dogs and cats, seven years old is “late middle age”, so from here we particularly look out for senior health issues such as reduced mobility, dental disease, growths, organ dysfunction and senility. Some of these conditions will require medical or surgical intervention, but many can be prevented (or their impact reduced) with good homecare. Measures such as careful weight control with diet and exercise, toothbrushing, and early veterinary assessment of any changes in condition can markedly improve both the quality and quantity of your pet’s life.
And always remember, it’s not how long you’ve been here, it’s how old you feel that matters!
See you next month!

The Family: Living Between Two Worlds
A guide for second-generation migrant families
Many second-generation migrants live in Mawson Lakes, that is, the children born to parents who settled in Australia as migrants (called firstgeneration migrants).
A booklet inspired by the SBS series “The Family” is available at the ML library. It discusses the challenges and conflicts that families can face as two generations collide. Indira Desai who immigrated with her family to SA from India and now lives in Mawson Lakes has first hand experience of this tension. She explains, “I feel the pressure of living between two cultures,
trying to hold on to our parents’ values that we were brought up with, but trying to accept the culture that our kids are growing up in. I don’t want to be out of step with my children but I’m having difficulty adjusting to modern Australian views on respect, relationships, gender roles, sex and conflict management.”
The Family guide has 5 chapters that explore the issues of living between two worlds, such as dealing with rebellion, roles, maintaining traditions, and dealing with difficult feelings, plus more.
The Family is an easy-read free booklet available from the Mawson Lakes Library. Ed.

YO UTH
Bonjour à tous!
Learning a new language can be tricky but very worthwhile.
After learning Chinese for 4 years, and as a current Year 12 student of French I experience first-hand the feeling of tirelessly trying to memorize word after word, and thinking you’ve grasped those grammar structures, when you really haven’t. If languages are so difficult to learn, why do we learn them?
Opinions vary, but for me, it’s the joy I get when I speak to people in a language completely different from my own and yet they understand me. If it weren’t for the fact that I could speak French, then I would never get the opportunity to converse with the majority of the French population, which, in 2010, stood as 64,876,618. That’s a lot of people.
The emphasis put on learning a language in Australia is minimal compared to the pressure students are under elsewhere in the world. Around Europe, it is compulsory that students learn a language throughout their schooling. You could say that our schooling system doesn’t focus that much on languages because English is a well-known language worldwide, but I think it is wrong to look at it in that way.
Here in Mawson Lakes we are privileged to be culturally diverse. We have an Asian grocer, an Italian pasta shop and many residents from different countries. But, I still feel that people are not sufficiently embracing different languages. The benefits of learning a language affects every part of our life, and it’s time people got out there to experience it.

Our Environment from MLEW
Volunteer residents help keep Mawson Lakes in good condition
Members of Mawson Lakes Environment Watch (MLEW) participate in keeping our suburb looking good and developing biodiversity within our area.
If you are tired of asking yourself: “Why doesn’t somebody do something about that?” Why not become that someone who does something? The work that MLEW members do is approved and supported by the City of Salisbury (Environmental Management Officer) and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Natural Resources Management Board.
So what does Mawson Lakes Environment Watch do?
It can be as little as identifying and reporting problems or, for the more active with available time and energy, it can involve direct action to help overcome some environmental issues. Coordinator Colin Taylor advises that organisational arrangements are flexible and whilst some members focus on their immediate area, others roam far and wide within our suburb undertaking specific tasks.
By way of example: Most of the graffiti removal and weed control spraying is done by Rob Jackson and Colin Taylor.
Cheryl and Mark Jaeschke won’t go for a walk without doing some weeding and litter clean up along the way.
Mike Holtby traverses ML looking after trees and pruning side-shoots.
Environmental issues at The Sanctuary are the focus of Kija Smith, Ivan Lovell and Frank Continuo. Vaugn Koen does the same for The Bridges.

Growing plants from seed has been done by C hris, Colin, Cheryl and Meg Hutton.
Linda Vining cares for the trees and parkland around Parkview Drive. In addition, her coverage of MLEW in Mawson Lakes Living is an important contribution to the profile of the group and to building public awareness about environmental issues.
Group efforts for litter clean ups (e.g. Clean Up Australia Day) and seedling planting involve many members. Colin Taylor

Brain Health – maintaining mental agility
Just as our bodies change with age, so does our brain, according to occupational therapist Priscilla Jordan who addressed BEAT IT, a healthy lifestyle group at Mawson Lakes.
“We experience cognitive changes as we age - memory loss, forgetfulness, diminished creativity and changes in our ability to concentrate, just as we experience physical changes,” said Priscilla.
At recent events
One way to maintain an active brain is to try something different and learn new routines or new skills, for example, dancing or quilting, Toastmasters Club or a new language.
Research tells us the best way to keep the brain active is to provide it with both novelty and complexity. Pricilla said that doing things that a person is not already good at doing –tasks that are new to the person and which provide a level of complexity, will challenge the brain.
“Starting and persisting with these sorts of experiences may not be easy but that’s the point. The experiences actively stimulate the brain. In contrast, activities that are easy to do or that are familiar to us can dull the brain.”
Each month Mawson Lakes Living provides puzzles for those who like to maintain an active brain. From next month we are pleased to welcome Tania King as our new puzzle master (pictured back row seated). Ed.

Emerald May
The gemstone Emerald is the green variety of the mineral Beryl. Emerald is both the May birthstone and the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Cancer. Emerald gemstones are associated with patience, understanding, and foresight. The wonderful green colour is unparalleled in the gem kingdom. It is caused by small amounts of chromium and enhanced by traces of iron. Emeralds usually contain inclusions and other flaws but these are not seen as negative aspects. They are considered part of the character of the stone and are used to assure the purchaser of a natural stone.

Nannies take the stress out of family life
Time-poor parents who like to come home to a well-ordered house are turning to nanny services to help them care for their children.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures for 2008 show that 4 per cent of children under the age of 12 who are in childcare are looked after by nannies.
Mawson Lakes resident Delene Weber who is a lecturer at UniSA/ML, said her children, now aged 5 and 7, have had nannies since they were babies and she couldn’t manage without a child minding service.
“A nanny helps us get rid of the rush,” she said, referring to the rush to get ready in the mornings and the rush to pick up children at the end of the day.
“Having a nanny creates a calmer environment for all family members and we know the children are receiving focussed attention throughout the day that includes craft activities, music, play and outings.”
For the Weber family who don’t have grandparent support, a nanny is like another member of the family. “My children love their nanny,” said Delene.
Nanny SA managing director Tanya Cole said nanny services are growing at an exceptional rate as more working parents seek care for their children in their homes.
She said that in addition to day care, parents use nannies for babysitting and to give them time for themselves to achieve a better work/ life balance.
“The best part of having a nanny is that things are calm when parents get home,” said Tanya. “Children are washed and fed and parents can do the nice mummy and daddy stuff, like reading and playing. It takes a lot of the stress out of raising a family.”
A nanny costs between $25 and $35 an hour if sourced through an agency. There are 8 nanny agencies in SA.
Delene Weber gives the following tips for engaging a nanny: Check references by making
personal phone calls. Make your expectations clear at the start, such as, will the nanny drive your car, or their own to take the children out, will they do any housework, how much money can the nanny spend on the children or on supplies. Look for punctuality, reliability and high energy levels. Allow a trial period to gauge the nanny’s rapport with your children, and finally, follow your instincts. Ed.
