The Watershed and Wetlands of Mawson Lakes
Separating Mawson Lakes from the waters of Gulf St Vincent is an extensive reach of saltwater wetlands on either side of Salisbury Highway covering more than 100 hectares.
A decade ago this area was degraded saline land until the City of Salisbury transformed it into one of Australia’s largest urban stormwater wetlands called the Greenfields Wetlands. Here, water is stored in ponds that provide a natural way to clean urban runoff. After slow movement and filtration the water is stored underground in a permeable layer of rock for later use. In ML we use this recycled water for our gardens and parks.
The innovative and pioneering recycling project has received world acclaim.
Mawson Lakes is framed by this wetland backdrop and it provides an exciting
and easily accessible area of environmental exploration and recreation. The clean ponds are a perfect habitat of native plants and animals.
The Watershed Café, pictured on the cover and reviewed on page 18 is situated in this picturesque setting where the mood changes throughout the day. Mornings for breakfast are fresh and musical with birdsong, while sunset dinners are enchanting. The Watershed also holds functions such as weddings, parties and product launches and many day trippers come here to walk the wetlands or photograph the wildlife and stay on for lunch.
You can take a self guided walk along the wetlands nature trail with boardwalks and bird hides where signs explain the plants and animals and aboriginal origins of the area. A security token for access is available from the café. Car entry and parking is via the turnoff to the cafe on Salisbury Highway at ML. To book a group tour with a guide contact 1300 605 019. To arrange a school excursion contact the wetlands education centre on 8258 9761. Ed.

What makes us happy?
Rushing through life can be the key to success and happiness according to Todd Buccholz author of the book “Rush: why you need and love the rat race.” He set out to write a book about people chasing success and losing their souls, but along the way he changed his mind. He concluded that people chasing success had a lovely time and if we copied them we would too. The book is available from the ML Library.
With happiness in mind, Living asked the people of Mawson Lakes what makes them happy. Take a look at this month’s centrefold for the answers.
Dynamic growth is a feature of Mawson Lakes. The new shopping centre is underway, new businesses are opening, new houses are being built, people are arriving from all over the world and spectacular festivals are coming to town. Read all about it in the pages that follow.
Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine and website for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to any organisation with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes.

Thank you - I live in the Shoalhaven village of Mawson Lakes and recently some kind person turned our water off when our sprinkler blew a pipe and was spraying water everywhere. Thank you. This gesture was very much appreciated.
Joanne Turner.
Quick action - Some of the pavers on the footpath outside my house were lifting and causing a trip hazard so I rang the Council on Monday. Council came out on Thursday and the job was fixed in less than a week. Impressive efficiency.
Jim Cunningham
Too much bark - I was disgusted at your last issue; it featured two pages written by or about dogs. How many pages were written by or about cats? None. Where are the articles on finding a comfortable sleeping place that’s cool in summer, warm in winter and away from children? Nowhere. It was all ‘woof’ this, ‘bark’ that. To add to the insults, I see on your website that you are planning a ‘Dogs Day Out’ in September. Where is the ‘Cats Day In’?
Neko The Cat
Editor: Living would love to hear from the cats of ML. Send in your photos and stories.
Beautification of the wetlands - When ML was established the developer planted trees and shrubs along the railway fence line. I was frustrated to see the plants shrivel and die in the summer heat and the corridor become an eyesore. That is until Mawson Lakes Environment Watch took on the job of caring for the area in collaboration with Council, with plantings, watering and mulching. Today the railway corridor around Brookside is a joy to visit, full of healthy plants and lively birdsong. It’s a fine example of positive community action. Take a look, join MLEW.
Meg Hutton
Parking problems - I have lived in Mawson Lakes for 8 years and am presently finding it nearly impossible to get a park at the shopping area. Add to this the fact that the car park is very ‘tight’ and very congested at the entrance
leading out onto University Parade. Mawson Lakes needs a solution to this is problem.

“My family and our 3 dogs moved from Perth about 12 months ago. I left behind my entire support network and gradually had to rebuild it here in Mawson Lakes – friends, church, shops, gym, professional services, home help, everything. Thank heavens for the community magazine. It was the first thing that greeted me in my letterbox. I look out for it each month and use it all the time to find local services and to learn what’s going on.

Modern mall takes shape
A full-service Target will occupy the space left by Woolworths when the new shopping centre is opened in Mawson Lakes next year. According to the developer, Andrew Taplin, everything should be completed by June 2013.
The mall, called Mawson Central, will contain an enlarged Woolworths, 12 specialty shops, a cafe zone and a kiosk. The existing shopping square will be called The Promenade. Both will be linked and there will be linkages to the university precinct. The plan is designed to integrate the central business district.
Mawson Central will have three levels with undercover parking for more than 600 cars. “This is a large addition to the parking space which at present is 180 car spaces,” said Andrew.
Mawson Central will be a fully enclosed, air conditioned modern mall with community facilities such as a mother’s room and disability access. A row of residential apartments will face the university. Extensive landscaping with setback gardens will transform the site into an attractive commercial precinct (see artist’s impression below). For more diagrams and plans go to www.mawsonlakesliving.info.
Taplin is presently calling for tenants to occupy the specialty shops. Ed.

Lake restoration and landscaping
The restoration of Sir Douglas Mawson Lake is complete and the recent landscaping around the south bank has returned the lake and its surrounds to an attractive walkway and picnic area.
Lend Lease will now hand the area to the City of Salisbury for management and maintenance.
Council landscape architect Craig Johansen said the banks have been graded and terraced and planted with a mixture of grasses, shrubs and kangaroo paws that will do well in local conditions. Solar lighting will illuminate the walkways at night.
At the head of the lake is the new summer shed and barbeque with a 6 metre custom made table designed for big family gettogethers and large groups where up to 20 people can be seated. Just perfect for a family or neighbourhood picnic. Ed.

Lending a hand in Vietnam
In April, a small group of Endeavour College staff and students ventured to Vietnam on a cultural study tour. The trip allowed the students to gain a handson insight into the Vietnamese culture and provided them with an in-depth understanding of the Vietnam War, including reflection time at Long Tan. One of the highlights was the opportunity for
the students to visit two orphanages for which the college had raised money. The $4,500 raised allowed the students to purchase noodles, milk, nappies and three tonnes of rice for the orphanages.
After spending time with the orphans and seeing their adverse living conditions, the students were so moved by the experience that they purchased toys and stationery with their own money to give to these children. The trip provided many great learning opportunities and showed how generous and compassionate everyday teenagers can be when faced with adversity.

Samba adds more spice to Winter Festival of Dance
The sensational samba will be a highlight of The Cheesecake Shop Winter Festival of Dance program on Sunday July 15 at the Denison Centre. The event follows the Australian Dancing Society SA’s successful March event when more than 300 people were entertained with five hours of social dancing, ballroom competitions and showcase contests.
Danca Brazil will open the evening segment at 5.30pm after the two-hour social dance from 3pm to 5pm. The social dance will be compered by well known and popular MC Garry Roberts.
In contrast to the feathers and bling of the samba dancers, women in glamourous gowns and men in white tie and tails will be putting on the ritz for the ballroom dancing competitions with sexy outfits appearing on competitors for the Latin contests. Showdances will present moves which will bring gasps of surprise at the competitors’ dexterity. Admission will be $10 with $5 for those under 16. Bookings are essential with Penelope Forster on 8379 5500. Pre-payment is preferred. Canteen open all day.

By the Plate and By the Bottle with David Garrick, Food and Wine Consultant
Two of the finest things in life are food and wine so Living has invited ML resident, David Garrick, to write a column each month about the best culinary delights that Mawson Lakes has to offer and some of the best value wines that South Australia has to offer.
By the Plate:
The Watershed Cafe & Function Centre
If I didn’t have to go back to work, I could have easily sat here the whole day. With great views across the wetlands, cool gentle breezes and wildlife to boot this is a unique dining experience. Tony the Manager has a passion for food and wine that is evident in the menu and the wine list which is a mix of old favourites and the new breed of styles. For starters, The Warm Cob Loaf with Balsamic is a sweet delight that matches perfectly with the Dukkah.
For Main, the Barossa Smoked Pork was juicy and the sweet potato mash, crunchy snow peas and the sweetness of the red currant vino cotta worked in synergy. Washed down with a glass of Crowded House Pinot Noir it was just divine.
Dessert, OMG! The’ House Made’ sweets. The freshly made cheesecake was a pleasure with, soft, light, sweet berries and chocolate sauce. What what more can I say..... Yum!!
Wine by the Bottle: Poonawatta, 2008 ‘The Cuttings’ Eden Valley Shiraz
At just under two acres, this Dry Grown Shiraz Vineyard consistently delivers quality fruit, and the 2008 is no exception. One word ‘Bipolar’powerful yet elegant with its dark plum colour, fragrant black fruits and charry oak, making this wine a truly exceptional expression of this classical variety.

Council Update
This is a quarterly article where we will discuss issues affecting the parks and reserves of Mawson Lakes and other important landscape issues.
The City of Salisbury will be undertaking some minor landscape rejuvenation projects across the suburb. These projects have been issued to a landscape contractor who hopes to complete all of the works by August this year. Site locations and works to be undertaken are detailed below:
• Iluka Crescent Reserve (Sanctuary Village)
– removal of noxious weeds in garden beds, removal of dead plants and in-fill planting with similar, more suitable species currently present in the garden beds.
• Archaeology Park (Lincoln Place and Flinders Court Reserves, Sanctuary Village) – similar works as described above.
• Mobara Park – similar works as described above, with the addition of fresh mulch.
• Dutton Avenue Entry (Shoalhaven Village)
– additional plantings along road verge and centre of round-about.
• The Strand Road Verges & Round-about
– plant mulched beds along The Strand with appropriate ground cover species. For the round-about, removal of noxious weeds and plant with low shrubs.
• Sanctuary Entry – irrigation to be installed, suitable low shrub and ground cover species and mulch.
• Beechwood Avenue Verge – modification to irrigation if required, removal of dead plants and replace with similar species.
• Park Way Verge – simple, sustainable landscape with suitable low shrubs and ground cover species and mulch.
The City of Salisbury only has a small budget to spend on landscape upgrades so will complete the above works this financial year. If you have suggestions or issues you wish to discuss please feel free to contact us, details below.

Social networking is making us unsociable
Acting as a line of communication for people and businesses worldwide, social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter are rapidly taking over the Internet airwaves. Just recently while shopping I found a lemon with a sticker saying ‘Like me on Facebook!’ A lemon. Really?
About two months ago I deleted my Facebook account, and it was probably one of the most liberating things I have ever done. You see, these sites are making us lose our (now) old fashioned values such as manners, the ability to keep up conversation, and using a telephone. Also, when we communicate with others behind a computer screen, messages can become misinterpreted. Who hasn’t fretted over something someone said, to find out it wasn’t done purposefully?
I felt Facebook was consuming my life, and instead of meeting with my friends, or calling them, I’d just speak to them online. When I deleted my Facebook, I realized just how hard it was to keep up a proper conversation again. When you become so used to short answer questions like ‘how are you’ and ‘what are you doing’, with answers such as ‘good’ and ‘nothing’, proper conversations becomes hard. What on earth were we supposed to talk about?
Luckily, through my two-month drought I have remembered the joys of a good conversation, and I now spend my free time doing more productive things such as studying and reading, rather than being glued to my news feed, waiting for nothing.

Bed Buddies by Nigella
The indigenous story says if it’s a cold night you need one dog beside you to keep you warm, if it’s colder you need two dogs and on a freezing night you need three - it’s a three dog night.
Well, I’m afraid my mummy and daddy only have one dog, and that’s me.
On these cold winter nights I love to cuddle down between the sheets and radiate warmth.
Sure, I have a cosy fur-lined doggie bed of my own. Indeed, I have cosy cushions all over the house, but there’s nothing as nice as putting your head on the pillow and lying on your back with your feet up in the valley forged between the humans.
I can understand that some people are so in love with their pets that they figure it’s the only bed buddy they need. A study by PETstock of 10,000 people shows that it’s easy for a pet to absorb all the love. In the study, 41 per cent of singles said they share their bed with a pet.
Pet love
The PETstock study shows that:
41% of singles share their bed with a pet.
26% of two-person households share their bed with a pet.
89% believe people use pets as a child substitute.
72% said they would find the death of their pet extremely traumatic.
On a cold night, one dog is enough to keep you warm. Photo by Katarina Husakova of her daughter Nikki with snuggle-pie Roxy.
Well, I think that a pet perfectly fills the void in the absence of a partner. In fact, a pet is much better than a partner. Think of it this way, we are your best friend, we don’t talk back or tell tales, and we roll with the punches during the night. We never complain if you snore, drag off the blankets or kick us in your sleep; we just move to another grove in the quilt.
Come morning we jump up without complaint at the prospect of a walk, no matter how early, and we don’t take over the bathroom. All our needs are met with a bowl of food, a walk and a few hugs.
What more could you ask from a buddy?

Pet Stroller
Scooting around the streets of ML is Champas in his new doggie stroller. What a great idea for a little dog who is disabled with arthritis in his legs and shoulders. His loving owners Carol and Graham Rye (ph 8260 5533) bought the stroller from the UK and what a groove it is with windows all around, sunshade, shock absorbers, a carry tray below for doggie essentials, and even a holder for Champas’s water bottle! Dread The Dentist? If So, This Could Be For You!
If you suffer from sweaty palms or sleepless nights at the prospect of dental treatment, you are not alone.
Dental phobia and anxiety often prevent patients from seeking necessary treatment, leading to pain, increased cost and loss of teeth.
North Adelaide Dental Care understands this and has been providing high quality dental treatment in a non-threatening manner, with the latest equipment and materials available for the last 30 years.
Intravenous sedation is administered by a fully qualified anaesthetist and recovery overseen by a registered nurse, within the rooms, whilst general anaesthetic procedures are undertaken at a local hospital.
This is ideal for patients who have a strong gag reflex; have medical issues that prevent standard dental care; have dental phobia; or require extensive treatment and want it completed in the minimum number of visits possible.
I would like to introduce Nanny Josette who is highly recommended by Nanny Dawn. Josette has been working for Nanny Dawn for the past year and would love to continue looking after clients in the Mawson Lakes area.

New reserve at The Bridges
Cross the pedestrian bridge at the Railway Interchange to The Bridges Village and you enter a newly created parkland.
Biodiversity Reserve covers 2.2 hectares and has been designed to sensitively interpret some of the aboriginal archaeological sites within the Mawson Lakes area. The reserve was developed by Lend Lease and handed to Council last month for ongoing maintenance.
Although the reserve looks stark now, the new pathways, tree plantings and picnic areas will provide desirable open space and recreation facilities in years to come.
Native Ironbark (Eucalyptus Sideroxylon Rosea) have been planted across the expanse of rolling grass. These hardy trees are well suited to clay soils and will tolerate salty coastal winds and dry conditions. They flower in winter with red, or pink flowers and grow to about 25 metres tall. Watch them grow. Ed

Pet care with Dr Brendan
When did you last worm your pet?
Cleo the Border Collie walks every morning to the shops for a newspaper and a coffee.
Despite their increasingly cloistered lives, our pets are still exposed to parasites such as intestinal worms. Worms are picked up from the environment during walks and play; some even are passed on during pregnancy. They can be killed with worming treatments, but these are seldom 100% effective so repeat treatment is necessary to ensure absence of parasites. However, there is also increasing awareness of potential for environmental impacts and resistance to common wormers if they are inappropriately used.
Clearly not all dogs are the same. A working Kelpie is more at risk than a pampered pooch living in the handbag of a celebrity, and the former will need more regular worming.
Dougal from The Cascades loves the beach, especially early mornings at Semaphore.
Helpfully, our local vet laboratory now offers faecal analysis to look for the presence of worm eggs as an adjunct to a worming regime, so we can choose to check for worms (and just treat those who need it) as an alternative to routinely treating potentially worm-free patients. See you next month!

Disposing of your end-of-life television or computer
Dumping your old computer or television is not an option and this includes leaving items outside collection sites and charity bins. It is illegal and you can be fined. But a new National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme will provide Australian householders and small businesses with access to free recycling services.
The first services provided under the scheme are due to roll-out in Adelaide in July 2012.
International supply-chain company DHL has been approved to offer free collection points.
The scheme will accept all televisions, computers, printers and computer products (such as keyboards, mice and hard drives) for recycling, regardless of brand, and no matter how old.
These products contain valuable materials that can be re-used, as well as substances that are hazardous to humans and the environment.
The scheme aims to lift television and computer recycling from the current low rate of around 17 per cent to 80 per cent by 2020.
In the meantime, if you can’t wait, the Salisbury Council Hard Waste Collection Service is available once a year at a cost of $10 or you can get a voucher for one trailer load per year to take hard waste to the Waste Transfer Station on Research Road.

36 Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 61 - June 2012
From one of the humblest of life forms, the mollusc, comes the pearl - a gem of unsurpassed beauty and elegance. Ancient civilizations had many stories to explain the origin of June’s birthstone, such as the Greek belief that pearls were the hardened tears of joy that the goddess of love shook from her eyes as she was born from the sea. According to Arab legend, pearls were formed when oysters were lured from the depths of the ocean by the beautiful moon and then swallowed moonlit dewdrops. The scientific explanation for natural pearls is almost as mystifying as folklore. When an irritant, such as a small parasite or a grain of sand lodges in the flesh of an oyster, mussel, or clam, a protective substance called “nacre” is produced. Over years, layer upon layer of shimmering nacre coats the intruder, creating a lustrous pearl. Natural pearls are relatively rare, so a process evolved in which a piece of shell or bead was placed inside a mollusc to stimulate the production of nacre. This results in a cultured pearl, which accounts for about 90 per cent of the pearl industry.
Alternate Birthstones: June has two alternate birthstones. The first is Moonstone, a type of feldspar named because of its uncanny resemblance to the iridescent sheen of the moon. The second alternate birthstone for June is the Alexandrite. A yellowish or brownish green in colour, this gemstone has the unique characteristic of changing colour to a red hue when exposed to a glowing light source, such as candlelight.

Mawson Lakes Girl Guides
When the Girl Guides get together every Thursday night in the Mawson Centre they not only have fun, they learn life and leadership skills in a non-formal way.
The group was established in Mawson Lakes last year by resident Kerry Henderson who is the director of Kaplan Business School. Her two daughters Katherine and Sarah were Girl Guilds when they were young and they now help Kerry run the unit.
Kerry started off in Girl Guides a decade ago as a volunteer parent and as her children grew she progressed into a leadership role. “I strongly believe in the aims of the organisation which provides girls with a safety zone where they can express themselves without gender judgement,” she said.
Young Courtney who attends Girl Guides is a patrol leader. She said she loves all the activities, research for her badges, the games and working to achieve awards each term.
“I like meeting up with my friends and having a good time at things such as makeover nights, picnics, craft and sports. We decide what we want to do and we get up to so many fun things,” she said.

Giggle Time at the library
Babies are very sociable characters and that explains why Giggle Time at Mawson Lakes Library is a raging success for the 0 to 2 year olds.
Every week for half an hour the littlies get together to share books, sing songs and play games.
Children’s Librarian, Simone Wise, who runs the free program, said that positive experiences in the early years will shape a child’s development, enhance the ability to learn and develop social skills.
Mothers agree. Rachel Turnbull said that she has been bringing her daughter Tigerlily to Giggle Time ever since she was 5 months old and she has watched her make lovely friends and grow from starry eyed wonderment to interactivity.
“For parents it’s good to get out too, especially in winter, and talk to other mothers.”
“Programs like this help make ML a close-knit, warm and friendly community,” said Rachel.
Catherine who is a teacher at Endeavour College, brings her son Isaiah every week. She said that little children learn through repetition. “They like to see familiar faces, sing the same songs, giggle at the same things over and over and follow a routine, and that’s exactly what we do,” she said. Ed.

What TREE is that?
Claret Ash
If you’d like to add sensational red colour to your autumn garden you’ll love the Claret Ash which grows well in Mawson Lakes.
My office looks over a fabulous stand in Parkview Reserve and when the morning sun touches the trees they glow a deep rich claret colour. They take my breath away. In winter they are bare and in summer they form a shady canopy.
The fast growing, medium sized tree will reach 10 to 15 metes. It has a stout trunk and symmetrical branches that form a rounded canopy. Foliage is dark green which turn reddish purple during autumn. Trees will tolerate dry conditions once established. Ed.

Triple M Fishing Competition
More than 10,000 anglers dropped a line at the first Triple M Fishing Competition in April hoping to catch a highly prized bream worth $10,000. The specially released tagged bream escaped uncaught but more than 200 carp were not as lucky. Salisbury Council approved the competition as a one-off event but will look to review the decision given the popularity of the event. Cr Brad Vermeer said a community survey would be conducted before Council made a decision about whether the event should be held annually.

Make a TORNADO in a bottle
Learn how to make a tornado in a bottle with this fun science experiment. Using easy to find items such as dish washing liquid, water, glitter and a bottle you can make your own mini tornado that’s a lot safer than one you might see on the weather channel. Follow the instructions and enjoy the cool water vortex you create!
What you'll need:
1. Water
2. A clear plastic bottle with a cap (that won't leak)
3. Glitter
4. Dish washing liquid
Instructions:
1. Fill the plastic bottle with water until it reaches around three quarters full.
2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid.
3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see).
4. Put the cap on tightly.
5. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds, stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly.
What's happening?
Spinning the bottle in a circular motion creates a water vortex that looks like a mini tornado. The water is rapidly spinning around the centre of the vortex due to centripetal force (an inward force directing an object or fluid such as water towards the centre of its circular path). Vortexes found in nature include tornadoes, hurricanes and waterspouts (a tornado that forms over water).
VOLCANO facts
Volcanoes are openings in the earth’s surface. When they are active they can let ash, gas and hot magma escape in sometimes violent and spectacular eruptions.
The word volcano came from the name of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.
Volcanoes are usually located where tectonic plates meet. This is especially true for the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area around the Pacific Ocean where over 75% of the volcanoes on earth are found.
