Who lives in Mawson Lakes

In the park this week I met Jennifer Guo and her son Leo (9) who have come to live in Australia from Shanghai in China, the largest city by population in the world where 23 million people live in one city!

C ompare this to South Australia where the State’s population is 1.6 million. Adelaide’s population is 1.2 million. Australia’s entire population is 22.7 million. After living most of her life in high-rise apartments, Jennifer said she really appreciates and values the spaciousness and peacefulness of Mawson Lakes. “I would like to buy a house here,” she said.

When you look around Mawson Lakes who do you see? Where do people come from and what age groups predominate? This issue of Living examines the statistics of Mawson Lakes by age distribution.

The 2011 Census gives us a precise profile of the composition of the suburb. Of the 12,000 residents in ML, half were born overseas. Our highest age group is 20 to 30 year olds. Where do you fit into the age distribution? Take a look on page 22.

You only need visit a park, as I do every day with Nigella, to see the reality of these statistics.

At the slippery-dip I meet people from all over the world; just this week from Africa, Sweden, Malaysia, Iran, UK and China. Some of them are pictured in the magazine. Many are young families who have made South Australia their home, others are here temporarily to study. No matter where we come from, we must all work to keep our country and our suburb safe, clean, green, friendly and beautiful. To this end, you may be interested to read the government’s Seven Strategic Priorities for SA. Take a look at the message from the Premier on page 6.

Public art that enriches our community

Every part of Mawson Lakes tells a story about our community’s history, values and culture, and everywhere we go we are fortunate to have quality public art that reflects who we are, where we have come from and what we value.

Artwork may be a picturesque pool with reclining wooden seats in Mobara Park that says our community values nature and spaces for quiet reflection; or it may be a more formal modern sculpture such as the work ‘Ascension’ rising from the lake that celebrates our cultural community; or a mural such as the one at Mawson Lakes School that portrays life in Dry Creek.

Each month Living will put the spotlight on a different outdoor artwork in our everyday environment so you know where to find it, who did it and what it stands for.

Collecting Thoughts by Margaret Worth

The cover of this month’s magazine illustrates a sculpture in Technology Park located above the lakeside walk on a knoll behind the boatshed. The sculpture is called ‘Collecting Thoughts.”

The steel ball symbolises Technology Park, a place where thoughts are collected and organised towards the development of ideas.

Adelaide artist Margaret Worth who designed and created the artwork says the sphere is a form that represents both the world and a single atom. “Through a collection of cells, a pattern of complexity within simplicity is created,” she said.

Margaret describes the art as a “dynamic image of the technological era, of the clustering of ideas and innovative practices towards the generation of health and wealth in society.”

The location for the sculpture is spacious and sunlit, providing daily changing patterns of light and shade on the ball. And the wind, when it is strong and at the right angle, creates a low aeolian sound that adds an element of unpredictability and surprise.

The work was commissioned by the Land Management Corporation in 2002. Ed.

Have a nice day - The mean brigade has hijacked the phrase “Have a nice day”. I was shopping the other day and had an unpleasant encounter with an aggressive saleswoman. After a bit of an altercation she managed to get in the last word when she called out sarcastically as I walked away, “Have a nice day.” What a snarly way to trash a saying that is meant to be friendly. Be careful how you use this phrase. “Have a nice day” is developing a bad reputation. Brigidine Jones

Meeting people in public places - As a newcomer to Mawson Lakes, one of the nice things I notice is the small size of private yards but the big areas devoted to open space for public use. Mawson Lakes men on eco-mission to Africa

University students from Mawson Lakes, Cameron Bysouth and Kyle Taggert, are heading to South Africa next month for a 2-week eco trip that combines meaningful community-based volunteer work with exciting adventure tourism.

The students are part of Volunteer Eco Students Abroad program aimed at helping the indigenous people of remote villages in South Africa improve their living conditions and the education of their children. As well, they work with national parks authorities and local wildlife refuges on conservation projects.

Cameron and Kyle are expecting to teach English to the children at an orphanage, build sustainable farming units to help local families develop an income, and observe and record wildlife in the local wetlands.

“I’m particularly looking forward to assisting at the crocodile centre with tasks such as cleaning out crocodile pens, moving crocodiles and clearing vegetation,” said Cameron. Kyle is keen on the safari tour, including cycling or walking through a game reserve.

“Along the way we’ll get to visit an African witch doctor and hopefully develop a much better understanding of the local culture,” said Cameron. Ed. Contact Cameron Bysouth on

Scooting around Mawson Lakes

Walking is a popular fitness choice for many people in Mawson Lakes, others ride a bicycle or go to the gym, but for Karina Bobridge the choice is a recreational push scooter.

Karina (67) who lives in an apartment in the business district can often be seen travelling the pathways of Mawson Lakes pushing her small scooter.

She says that as a nurse she sees too many older people come to a standstill, but she’s not about to “turn off the tap” anytime soon. When her knees gave her problems and walking become difficult she looked for a new way to exercise.

“I love my scooter. It’s more energetic than walking, being half walking and half jogging, and when I arrive home my heart is beating and my body is perspiring. I feel like I’ve had a good workout.”

Karina travels about 5 km each morning for an hour or so and says the scooter is good for her legs, ankles, knees and lower back. “It gets me out of the house and I travel all over, and for someone with a poor sense of balance it’s comforting to have my feet close to the ground. But best of all are the downhills. They give me a real buzz,” said Karina. Ed.

This month Living says goodbye to Aimee Thomson who is preparing for the South Australian Certificate of Education which begins in November and we welcome a new youth writer - Grace Liddell-Page, who is in Year 11 at Endeavour College. She writes on the topic:

The importance of family

The teenage years of a young person’s life often pose challenges for both teenagers and parents. Frequent arguing, yelling and disagreements, as well as differences in opinion about the importance of life such as; school, socialising and choosing a career path, are common issues faced. Despite all the drama and the frustration of both parties, many teenagers would agree that parents and family play an important and vital role in their lives.

Chloe Muculley a year 8 student at Endeavour College says that she does not always get along with her family, but, she says, “I will always value my parents for being strong enough to put aside our differences and try to fix the situation.”

Deana Bakas (17) who is a friend of mine from Actors Ink believes that teenagers feel their family is one of the most significant aspects of their life. She says that, “family is extremely important, as generally speaking, they are there for every important step of your life and they are the constant people who continue to pop up out of nowhere to remind you that someone cares about you.”

Although the teenage years are infamous for family tension and restlessness, most young people highly value their parents and the role they play in providing them with support, encouragement and love.

What plant is that?

Silvery Moon (Convolvulus White)

Everywhere in Mawson Lakes you will see this small hardy plant growing in drifts in Council gardens, in home gardens and in pots. It is a landscape gardener’s darling because it is neat, hardy and constantly attractive.

The silver foliage provides interest through winter when many perennials are dormant. Then, during autumn, a profusion of large bright white flowers cover the bush for months.

Silvery Moon makes an attractive low hedge to line driveways or front fences/walls and is suited to cottage or white gardens. It adds contrasting foliage for a border or as a backdrop for other low growing perennials or groundcovers. Used in groups it creates drifts in garden beds to tone down bright or hot colours or to give a lift to pastel schemes.

The plant will withstand drought and general neglect. It is non-invasive. Easy to grow, hard to kill.

It loves full sun with well drained soil. Although dry tolerant, it needs an occasional deep watering in dry periods.

A light prune after the main flowering period (early autumn) will promote vigour and maintain a neat shape. An application of slow release fertiliser during spring will benefit performance. Grows approx 50cm high and 70cm wide. Ed.

Are you breeding mosquitoes in your backyard?

Mosquitoes breed in standing water such as old car tyres and other water-holding containers, pot plant trays, roof gutters and domestic ponds. During summer the life cycle from egg to flying adult mosquito takes only 7-10 days. You can see them wriggling in still water so take a look around and determine if you have any mosquito breeding habitats on your property.

Ways to eliminate breeding areas

 Dispose of all containers that hold water after rain including cans, bottles, tins, tyres, and other receptacles.

 Empty pot plant trays once a week or fill with sand. Empty watering cans.

 Keep ornamental ponds stocked with mosquito-eating fish, e.g. goldfish.

 Keep swimming pools well chlorinated and filtered and free of dead leaves.

 Fill or drain depressions in the ground that hold water.

 Empty and clean pet drinking water regularly.

 Empty or upturn children’s pools, sandpits or other play equipment that may hold water.

 Boats and trailers should be overturned or covered to prevent the accumulation of rainwater and tarpaulins covering these objects should be emptied after rain.

 Install roof guttering guards or ensure leaves and debris are cleaned from guttering to prevent blockages.

 Flush with a hose on a weekly basis bird baths, small water features and bromeliads.

 Check the deck. The dark area under the backyard deck is often moist and perfect for growing skeeters. Dry it and put sand under the deck. Ed.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 Census describes Mawson Lakes as a wellto-do, well educated, family oriented, multicultural suburb with a predominantly young population. So just how young is our population?

Japanese Cultural Festival coming to Mawson Lakes

An interactive experience of Japanese culture, traditions and cuisine should entice you to Mobara Park on Sunday 28 October when the City of Salisbury celebrates it’s sister relationship with the city of Mobara in Japan.

The annual festival is called Matsuri on Mobara and this year a delegation from Japan will help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of the sister relationship. The colourful event features non-stop entertainment including a sword dance, martial arts demonstrations and singing and dancing, alongside hands-on origami and kimono activities. There will be displays of sushi making and tea ceremonies and authentic Japanese food on sale. Ed.

Quilting Ladies of Mawson Lakes

A diligent hush filled the room as ladies cut, arranged and measured colourful shapes of material to sew into quilts. I was visiting a workshop in the community centre organised by the Mawson Lakes Quilting Friends.

Yvonne Dawson who lives in Trinity Green and has been engaged in sewing, tapestry and needlework all her life, is one of the coordinators of the group. She describes quilting as a most satisfying and enjoyable craft.

“Glorious bold, bright coloured fabrics and exotic textures give us lots of scope for creativity,” she said.

“I have nine grandchildren and so far I’ve made a quilt for seven of them. On a cold night they love to curl up in their quilt and watch television, and because the quilts are made from cotton they wash and wear well.”

Quilting goes through fashion and there is always something new to learn. Traditionally quilts were functional for beds, but the modern trend is towards decorative art quilts that are displayed on walls and as home decor. Modern techniques include layering of sheer fabrics, beading, sequins and embroidery in the stitching.

Yvonne said that craftwork is a call to get out of the house. “I love the companionship and the inspiration from other women, and because it is a skill that requires concentration and patience, it keeps my mind active and focused,” she said.

The Quilting Friends meet regularly and on the second and fourth Saturday of the month. Ed.

Loving kisses by Nigella

Humans love us dearly, they feed us and play with us, so I figure a little thanks with a few kisses is the least we can offer as a sign of appreciation.

I get loads of kisses from my family, all over – on my head, behind my ears, top of my nose; and mummy even blows raspberries on my tummy. It’s wonderful.

I give back lots of kisses too. I particularly like it when we go walking and the little children come running over to give me a pat. Some of them are a bit scared of dogs so my mummy shows them how to pat a dog by first asking the owner’s permission and then gently putting their hand in front of my nose as an introduction.

If the children are gentle I give them soft little kisses on their hands. Oh, they love it. One little girl counted 9 kisses! Mummy says to the children: “Nigella has given you a little kiss because she likes you.” They beam with happiness.

Kisses are usually fleeting things, but not the one I got from Mayor Gillian Aldridge at the Mawson Lakes Photographic Exhibition. This is what you would call an ‘everlasting kiss’.

Gillian is a dog-lover and on this occasion she gave me a big smooch on top of my head. She was wearing bright orange lipstick with lots of sticking power and it left a lustrous outline between my ears. She offered to wash it off but I said: “No way. This is a ‘Mayoral Kiss’ and

I’m going to wear it with honour!” And I did, for two days, until it faded away.

Yes, sometimes I do worry about the transfer of germs. That is, human germs to me. All those humans who sniff and cough and have runny noses and touch me, and little kids with dirty hands; you just never know where they’ve been. Then there’s the issue of bacteria in the mouths of humans . . .

I take reassurance that human germs are not transferable to dogs; and I’m fully vaccinated, so I don’t let the fear of germs stop me from kissing and being kissed.

To me, licking is loving.

Pioneer’s Monument in Mawson Lakes

Long before white settlement, indigenous people camped along Dry Creek where we live today. Then in 1842 the land was granted to Sir Montague Lowther Chapman and the area became known as the Township of Montague.

A monument to the original white settlement in Mawson Lakes is located on the Dry Creek Linear Walk. It also serves as a memorial to unmarked graves of the settlers at this site. A seat is next to the monument for those who want to pause and reflect.

You will find the engraved monument on the west side of Dry Creek, about 100m from the intersection of Montague Rd and Main North Rd.

The monument which was unveiled in 2009 depicts current roads in black lines (Main North Rd, Montague Rd and Mawson Lakes Bvd), overlaid by the original settlement roads in yellow.

The landmark can be reached by parking at the far end of Mary St which is close to the intersection of Montague Rd and Mawson Lakes Boulevard. Mary St is one of the oldest areas in Mawson Lakes, pre-dating the Delfin development.

“We have approximately 64,000 thoughts a day and our thoughts create our future,” said guest speaker, Helen Elizabeth Alm, at the September Business Women’s Network at The Polaris Centre in Technology Park. In an engaging and interactive talk, Helen said that thoughts can be positive or negative but it’s up to us to channel our thoughts and our energy to create success.

But what is success? Each person defines it differently and it changes over time. For some it involves business, for others it is about

relationships, so Helen advised each woman to write down her goals for success, as well as the challenges facing her.

“Self-knowledge and selfacceptance of who you are and what you want to achieve is the key to being a confident woman. You must learn to trust yourself. When you trust yourself you can extend yourself,” she said.

Helen will conduct a day long seminar in Mawson Lakes later in the year. Ed.

As we finally emerge from the chills of winter, we can be grateful for the fact that South Australia is not on the east coast, so we do not need to worry about trapdoor spiders, box jellyfish or paralysis ticks. However, a recent survey of shelter animals revealed the ongoing presence of heartworm in the South Australian dog (and cat) population. While heartworm disease is not common here, it is dangerous and can be fatal. Also the fact that it is spread by mosquitoes means that it strikes indiscriminately within the community.

As we all know, avoiding mosquito bites is nigh on impossible, but we can prevent heartworm disease by using any one of a number of treatments. These include monthly tablets, chews or spot-on treatments; or (my personal choice for my dog) a once-a-year injection. Make sure your pet is protected as the evenings warm and lengthen, and the mozzies begin to swarm!

Grandfather ignites spark

When Marko was a teenager he would cruise in his grandfather’s electrician’s van and help the immigrant from Serbia, who was still working into his 70s.

“I’d jump up on the roof or crawl into tight spaces where my grandfather couldn’t get. It was fun and my grandfather taught me all about his trade. From an early age I was destined to be an electrician,” said Marko.

“One of my grandfather’s favourite sayings was ‘without sweat there’s no money’. Another mantra was, ‘it’s better to be 5 minutes early than one minute late’. These are work ethics that I have taken into my own business.”

As a result of his grandfather’s influence, Marko undertook an electrical course at trade school and became an apprentice, then when

he was 26 yeas old he set up his own business using his initials, MZL, and he has not looked back. “I love the independence and flexibility of running my own business in an awesome trade.”

“This year I decided to advertise in Mawson Lakes Living and took out a 3 month block of ads, just small ads to get my name out there. The first month produced little response, but by the second month business was picking up, and by the third month I was getting two calls a week and lots of positive word-of-mouth, so I’m very happy with this.” (See ad on page 39) When Marko is not at work you will find him at the gym where he works on body building, or in his backyard tending his bonsai trees.

The gentle art of bonsai is an unusual art for a giant of a man, but Marko explained that bonsai is like body building in a way. “You have to work on it every day to get results. It takes years to achieve a certain look and it takes patience; and patience is something I have plenty of,” he said. Ed.

Ingredients:

Base

1 packet of sweet biscuits (250gm)

125g butter melted

Lemon filling

250g pkt cream cheese at room temperature

440g can condensed milk

2 egg yolks (save the whites in clean bowl for meringue)

1/4 cup lemon juice

2 teaspoons lemon rind/zest

1 tablespoon of gelatine dissolved in 1/4 cup hot water

Meringue

2 egg whites

125g caster sugar

125g butter melted

To make:

1 Combine biscuits and melted butter and push into springform pan or ovenproof dish.

2 Beat cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add condensed milk, eggs, gelatine, lemon juice and zest and beat until smooth. Pour over base and refrigerate for 2 hours until firm.

3 Make meringue by beating egg whites in a clean bowl and beating till firm peaks form. Slowly beat in caster sugar. Spoon meringue on top and bake in hot oven for 10 mins. Cool.

Why learn a Martial Art? David Dempsey AikidoSA

Adults seek martial art instruction for a few main reasons: Self Defence, Fitness, Personal Development or Social Activity. When parents bring their children to my Aikido classes, it’s usually to learn self-protective behaviours, to become more assertive or for me to instil some ‘discipline’ or ‘respect’ into the children.

Teaching grab releases, avoiding movements and to parry a punch are easy. Encouraging development of the child’s respect of others is harder, and starts by building appreciation of their own self worth. Being part of a group where they are respected, treated with consideration, and are expected to do the same helps to show them that they are important individuals, but with shared values and community responsibilities.

Aikido’s unique feature is that it recognises the attacker as another human, who should be respected and treated as well as possible, while still protecting yourself from attack. Our responses vary from blending and avoiding a grab to throwing and pinning the attacker. Seeing success in assertive behaviours in class reinforces the view that there are alternatives to violent opposition or passively ‘taking it’ when dealing with conflict.
