New technology is the future In conversation with our very modern mayor, Gillian Aldridge, she told me how excited she was with the cover and feature story on Smart Homes in last month’s issue. As part of her job, Gillian travels a lot so she got in touch with the Light Factory and asked them to perform their magic automation on her home. Now, she too has a Smart Home in Mawson Lakes, and armed with a smart phone she can manage her household from anywhere in the world. She can see who is knocking on her door and let them in or not, activate or deactivate her appliances, and if her garden needs a drink turn on the sprinklers from a hotel room in Tokyo. "Amazing, so easy and so affordable," she said with delight. In this issue I look at another technology coming to Mawson Lakes - the nbn - and answer questions to help you get the service you need. Why do some homes and businesses in Mawson Lakes have nbn and not others? How do you find out when you will get it and how do you sign up for nbn service? How much broadband do you need? My walking trail around The Cascades and parts of Shoalhaven is full of Messengers lying in driveways, blowing about, rotting on roads, in gutters and council strips. And the mess is even worse in wet weather. In my letterbox last month was a flyer announcing a trial MESSENGER OPT OUT campaign so I’m urging people to fill in the form and Opt Out to reduce the litter and the waste of resources thrown in your yard or driveway. It has finally happened at Shearwater Park but the design is miserably wrong. An ugly chain wire fence has been erected around the swings but these swings are too high for toddlers. There are no seats for carers, no shade, and worst of all, the other equipment for little kids is outside the fenced area. - Grandparent, Shearwater Drive Banana cake I’m from Salisbury Downs and I pick up a copy of MLL from the shops when I come over. After the treatment I went home and I came back later in the same afternoon to see another doctor and again used the carpark outside Target for about an hour. To my horror when I returned to my car I had a fine for $88 for overstaying. This distressed me greatly. A neighbour directed me to the phone number for the shopping centre management in the back of MLL. I called Taplin and the issue was resolved and they explained that residents can park outside the shops without penalty if they are using the services, but long-term parking for other purposes is prohibited. - Mary Ellul Plum job for PM The perfect job is waiting for the Prime Minister when he retires/gets booted out of his present role - the job of CEO of Australia Post. Much better pay - a lot more than he's earning now, and all he has to do is deliver parcels and letters; and they don’t even have to arrive on time: sometimes not at all! Malcolm likes to consider the needs of the people so maybe we could put our case to him for a PO at Mawson Lakes. New delivery services I shop online all the time and my shopping wings its way from all over the world namely Canada, US, UK, Singapore, Korea and China. Australia Post has never once lost a product or delivered it in an unsalvageable state but things are changing. I notice that some online stores like Ebay are now delivering shopping via a Woolworths storefront. You just rock up to your participating local store

and pick up your parcel, just like you would at a post office. I envisage in a not so distant future, major supermarkets, petrol stations, fast food outlets and community centres will pick up more postal duties. - Juska Hadradul Food ban in pubs and clubs Ridiculous laws regarding hotel dining were introduced this year as we discovered when we went to a local pub for a meal. We sat at a vacant outdoor table, went inside and ordered, and when the waiter brought two bountiful plates towards us he said: "Sorry I can't serve you at this table, it’s a smoking table." There was nobody else at the table so we said, "that’s ok just put it down". "Oh no" he said, "new laws prevent me from doing this, you’ll have to move." What??? Under the new laws staff cannot deliver meals to outdoor smoking areas and the tables must be marked accordingly. However, a patron can carry food from another area to a smoking table if a hotel or club chooses to let patrons do so. How crazy is this? Paula and Mark Cruizer An hour’s work is worth an hour’s pay. My mates tell me that the MLL Tradies Liftout was very successful for them. When’s the next one, I want to be in it? I’m a self-employed tradesman. I work hard, often in hot cramped places. I get the same hourly rate whether it be day or night, weekend or not. I don’t see why I (or other service people) should get extra pay if we choose to work on a Saturday or Sunday. An hour’s work is worth an hour’s pay, whenever you do it. Jason, electrician A wee pool Public swimming pools are full of wee. It seems that people who use pools regard them as toilets and rather than going before, they go in. Yuk. Researchers in Canada measured the amount of urine in a large number of pools and discovered that an average-sized pool contained 75 litres of urine. - Matthew Vincent

NBN in Mawson Lakes Has nbn arrived in Mawson Lakes? Yes and No, according to the nbn community affairs manager, Chris Gregory, who was in Mawson Lakes last month to explain the new telecommunications system. MLL asked these questions. What is nbn? The nbn™ network is Australia’s new landline phone and internet network, designed to provide access to fast and reliable phone and internet services no matter where you live. It is delivered by nbn co, a government business enterprise. When is nbn coming to Mawson Lakes? nbn is being rolled out zone by zone. In Mawson Lakes the majority of homes and businesses have already had the network built but if you are not yet connected, you can look at www.nbnco.com.au, enter your address and find out when nbn will be ready for you to connect. Is that why men are digging up the ground all over Mawson Lakes? Yes, technicians are putting the fibre cables in the ground now, and in some cases installing street connection cabinets. The type of network upgrade work required depends on the type of existing infrastructure (eg copper lines or hybrid-fibre-coaxial cable). Network upgrades run from existing exchanges. For the Mawson Lakes area, homes and businesses are served from either the Gepps Cross or Salisbury exchanges. How will we use it? How you use the nbn™ network is up to you and will depend on things like (1) what services you want; eg phone, internet or a combination of both (2) the phone and internet provider you use (3) the package of services you have with them; eg how much speed, how much data on a monthly basis, or what additional services you want (4) how your phone and internet provider runs their network (5) your equipment.

Most of us want a reliable network that delivers sufficient bandwidth (capacity for downloading and uploading) information and services. Services from nbn are offered in 4 speed tiers: • 12 megabits per second (Mbps) is for households with basic phone and internet usage. It is not super fast. • 25 Mbps is the standard for everyday use for browsing the web, streaming videos and emailing. • 50 Mbps is designed for homes with several users who use online gaming, streaming, and send or receive big files. • 100 Mbps is superfast internet for people who live their lives online. How can we access it? Telecommunication providers (e.g. Telstra, Optus and a hundred others) buy communication capability from the government-owned broadband network (nbn co as the wholesaler). They then package it and sell it to customers in varying bundles at varying rates (like your mobile phone plan). To connect to the nbn™ network, contact your preferred phone and/or internet provider. How much will it cost? The cost will depend on the services you want, the speed you want, and the data per month you want. With so many providers in the market with multiple options, the cost will vary – depending on your need. It may be as little as $15 per month for a phone-only service; to an average of $80-$100 for a regular home. Can a user opt out of nbn? In the short term Yes. In the long term No. There is no need to rush to connect to nbn if you already have a contract with a service provider, however, the old copper service will be phased out within 18 months after your zone is turned on. The meaning of Easter by Pastor Nick Nikolettos – Life Church Walk past any store this Easter and you are guaranteed to see bunnies, eggs, hot cross buns and chocolate in abundance. To many people, Easter seems a perfect time for a quick getaway with family and friends maybe to a favourite camping spot to put your feet up to relax and unwind. But is this all the four-day weekend is about? For Christians, Easter is the most significant time of year. On Good Friday, we remember Jesus’ crucifixion and death on the cross. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate His resurrection – where He overpowered death and rose from the dead. Jesus, the Son of God, was

born for the purpose of dying on a cross. He chose to do this because of His immense love for us. He died in our place for our sins. This is the message of Easter: Jesus came to give us new life. Jesus himself said, "I am the Resurrection and the Life". The story of Easter tells how God overcame evil. It shows how truth will prevail and unmasks the idea that humanity has the answers to life’s deepest problems. It tells the story of the love of God triumphing over sin, and how the hope of eternal life will one day put a final end to death. Spider Alert It’s been a rainy and humid summer, just the sort of weather that spiders like for breeding. Most spiders in Mawson Lakes are harmless and are useful for eating mosquitos and other insects but the redback spider is dangerous. It is a small jet black spider with a red stripe. It lives in dark, dry sheltered places around the home such as the garage, under the deck, in the roof or shed and it is most active at night. Always check before reaching into your mailbox or putting on gardening gloves or any other clothing left outside. The female is the nasty one. She injects poison. She kills and eats the male spider after mating. She has up to 250 eggs which can be found in a round white silken egg sac which she lays between September and May. Redbacks are not aggressive unless disturbed. An antivenin exists for humans but watch out that your pet does not sniff out a redback.

INFANTS WITH BREAST FEEDING ISSUES Dr Emilija Ports sees infants and young children to diagnose and treat ankyloglossia (otherwise known as tongue-tie). A thorough oro-functional assessment is performed to determine whether there may be a functional restriction in the mouth causing A teenager with ankyloglossia difficulty with (tongue-tie) movement and breastfeeding. Young children and adults are also assessed and treated with dental, speech and swallowing problems. Dr Ports uses a diode laser to perform labial (lip) and lingual (tongue) frenectomies for patients of any age. The procedure takes only a few minutes either in the dental chair or occasionally under general anaesthetic if required. Laser frenectomy has the advantage of not requiring anaesthesia or stitches in most situations and healing occurs in 7-14 days.

Parenting - Turning boys into good men Everyone wants to raise their sons to be caring, warm and strong, but raising boys is not easy according to Steve Biddulph, a world leader in Parenthood who addressed a huge crowd of parents in Adelaide last month. Steve says that the nature of boys needs reclaiming and recognising. "We need to learn to love boyishness – with all its energy and intense emotions." He encouraged mums and dads who find boys a bit overwhelming to develop a sense of fun while also being strong and clear about their values. The message is don’t panic – boys are honest and simple and respond to clear rules. But raising boys is impossible without major input from their fathers and other adult males. "Boys need men," he insists. Being an engaged father is the first rule in Biddulph's five-point program for boy-rearing, and one which implies a degree of compromise for career-focused men. The rest of his maxims are straightforward enough: playing rough-andtumble games with young boys to teach them how to inhabit a male body and learn to appropriately express their energy and emotions rather than be overcome by them. Then there's teaching boys to respect women, to 'honour tender feelings'. Biddulph illustrated three distinct stages through which he believes boys pass. In the early years it's the bond with mummy that counts. Then, around the age of six, a boy discovers he's male and he looks to dad - or the nearest approximation - in order to study for the part. Nonetheless, he doesn't discard his mother. Finally, by the time a boy is about 14, his

testosterone levels rise dramatically and he faces the challenge of becoming a man. It's a challenge boys cannot meet without the help of good male role models and a wider community of mentors and male friends. Steve urged mothers to identify good men in the community and show her son what a good man looks like and what he does that makes him good - this could be uncles, neighbours, teachers, and hopefully, his father. A growing boy needs a community of mentors and male elders to guide his passage to manhood.

Steve is a retired psychologist from Tasmania who has written many influential best-selling books on raising boys and girls (although that’s a different story) and he has travelled the world talking about parenting and arguing that parenthood is one of life's priorities not a sideline issue. His books call for a more affectionate and connected form of parenting, and he stresses the importance of role models in children's lives. Ed

In most cases, there are three reasons why someone refuses to pay for building work: 1. The invoice exceeds the amount quoted, or is otherwise in dispute. 2. The quality of the building work is in dispute. 3. The person is unable to pay the invoice. The first step is to ensure that you were properly qualified to do the work. Most trades and builders need to be licensed and certified for the work they do. If you lack the proper qualifications, you may be unable to recover any money for the work done. The next issue to consider is the quotation and/or agreement for the work. This should clearly

set out the scope of the work to be done and the amount to be charged. If any additional amounts are chargeable for the work, the quotation/agreement should detail the circumstances in which those charges might arise and the method of calculation. If the amount of your invoice is going to be an issue, it is better to identify this before commencing the work. Where the quality of the work is in dispute, the most common approach is to obtain an independent building inspection report. The report should identify any defects in the work and the cost of rectification. A report may also be helpful in cases where the invoice is in dispute, to consider whether the amount charged fairly reflects

Lost in a Forest

by Nigella There’s nothing like a Sunday drive; me sprawled out on the back seat, mummy in the front chatting away and an adventure coming up.

'Dog-friendly' is the first requirement when we go out to play and I’m always on the lookout for places to tell you about so you can go too. Last weekend we headed into the Adelaide Hills to an enchanting place called Lost In A Forest. It’s an old stone church built in the 1890s in Uraidla that has been repurposed as a pizza oven wine lounge. I knew the minute we pulled up that this was for me. Green grass, herb garden, shady trees, doggie water bowl and heaps of intricate exploration around the back and sides of the church. For dogs who love to explore - and who doesn’t - this place is full of inviting smells, and, oh, the tantalising aroma of pizza cooking on a wood oven . . . While Mummy was inside checking out the stained glass windows and dining settings made from the church’s carved doors and pews, I waited outside for the pizzas to arrive. And when

they did, it was a rave. But, oh, no, mummy said they were too rich and spicy for me, not doggie food. This called for a special doggie tactic - my most angelic look of anticipation - bright eyes, wagging tail, panting lightly. It always works and I managed to score a few pizza crusts. Yummy. For a happy family outing this is a perfect spot and not too far away from Mawson Lakes.
