have your say...

Clean up Mawson Lakes Thanks to everyone who took part in Cleanup Australia Day last month. We filled about 50 bags with rubbish from the streets, creek and wetlands. The most common forms of rubbish were food wrappers, plastics, foam and cigarette butts. Other interesting finds were bricks, laptops and clothing. Mawson Lakes Lions Club Branch Speak up on crime With reference to the article on "Neighbourhood Policing" in MLL/March, I write to report my experience. Because break-ins and theft are becoming commonplace in our community and in our street we installed CCTV to our home. Very recently we had a theft in the front yard (at 3.44am) and clearly caught the offender committing the act on the CCTV with recording and evidence he was not acting alone. We have also recorded further acts of theft in daylight (11.30am) to items donated and waiting to be collected by a charitable organisation. We all need to be vigilant and report even small incidences to police on 131 444. This can help police piece together a jigsaw. These perpetrators are on camera with distinctive features and I am sure that these crimes would not be the only acts they have conducted in the area. Grahame R Rye Bird mix-up For me, the main highlight of MLL are the puzzles. I do them all every month but I must report errors in the March issue of "Could You Pass Year 5? " It seems MLL is getting its birds mixed up. Q13 asked the name of the penguin in Storm Boy. Mr Percival was a pelican, NOT a penguin! Question 7 says polar bears eat penguins. No they don’t. Polar bears live in arctic regions (north pole) and there are no penguins in the arctic. Penguins are only found in Antarctica and the southern hemisphere where it is seals who eat penguins. Matthew, Shoalhaven Ed: Oops. Sorry Mr Percival. Seems like MLL needs to go back to school!

Red Bays Good to see the uni has taken action to protect community parking spaces outside the Mawson Centre (MLL/Jan/theft of parking spaces). The red bays, pictured above, are distinctive and make it clear that this is not a free student/staff parking area. Mark Barrymore Community parking at Mawson Centre I am the Campus Facilities Manager at Mawson Lakes Campus. In response to the article in the January edition of Mawson Lakes Living, Theft of Parking Spaces, the university has initiated improvements as follows: *More prominent line marking *Larger street signs indicating the bays *Entry signs modified *Parking enforcement officers to patrol and infringe overstayers and those parking in areas not designated. If community members have any concerns or questions please contact 8302 1759. Justin Faggotter, Campus Facilities Manager Kings Junction What impact will the new development on the corner of Main North Road and Kings Rd have on the traders in Mawson Lakes? This site called Kings Junction will have 13 specialty shops, major retail chains, a gym, fast-food restaurants, and 3 entertainment venues. The SA government and Salisbury Council are neglecting businesses in Mawson Lakes (eg all the empty retail spaces) and instead giving approval to a huge retail centre next door. Energy Revolution - Sustainable Salon Artique Hair Studio on Metro Parade is a small space that is doing big things. Numerous awards for the owner, Marco Giorgio, is evidence of this, and this month he is one of 6 finalists for the SA/ TAS Hairdresser Of The Year in the Australian Fashion Awards. "Action is taking place around the world to develop eco-friendly environments and we are changing our salon’s operations in Mawson Lakes," said Marco who took over Artique in October 2016.

"We have reduced the salon’s ecological footprint by using recyclable fabric towels to cut down on electricity use, we collect all our plastics and chemicals, glass, aerosols and aluminium and recycle these resources to stop them going into the waterways and landfill. Every fortnight a van from Sustainable Salons Australia collects our waste for reuse." Even hair is being reused. For example, clippings from sustainable salons are stockpiled to create hair brooms that can soak up oil spills because hair is a natural product that is very absorbent. Marco's passion for his industry goes way beyond his salon. He trains others overseas with Hair Aid,

Marco, owner of Artique Hair Studio

wins awards for his creative hair extensions and specialises in colour, cutting and styling. "The hairdressing industry is changing. We are more eco-friendly and our clients are demanding better practice and greater creativity. They are more adventurous; they see what the celebrities are wearing and how they use hair extensions to create amazing profiles and they come to us to create the same look." Ed

Energy Revolution - Sustainable Campus We are at the beginning of a worldwide Energy Revolution which will dramatically transform our way of life and the careers we pursue, predicts Professor Christopher Saint, Dean of Research and Innovation at the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes. "South Australia is Australia's leading state in the transition to renewable energy and the Mawson Lakes campus is at the forefront in trialing new technologies for a carbon neutral environment," he said.

Following the sun - a trial field for energy generation on the Mawson Lakes campus

"Some of the most brilliant researchers in Australia are working on developing this project. For example, our material scientists are looking at new materials to store energy, as opposed to lithium batteries which have a limited lifespan."

"Being a world leader in renewable technologies will bring a host of new jobs and investment opportunities to South Australia and to Mawson Lakes, as well as training the next generation of energy professionals for an environmentally friendly future." Imagine a suburb where every home is an electricity generator with solar panels and a storage system, so that no home is connected to the grid, but the energy is made, managed and shared within the suburb so there will never be an energy crisis. It’s coming. Now imagine a university campus that generates all its own electricity to power buildings and equipment, drive it’s air conditioning and power its lights. It’s happening

at Mawson Lakes. The campus is a trial site for sustainability with an investment of $7.7 million to showcase sustainable technologies and show how they can reduce electrical load, cut emissions, make energy available on demand and introduce huge savings. Dr Stephen Berry who is Renewable Energy & Decarbonisation Manager and coordinates the energy project, explained that UniSA/ML is transforming its campus. "In addition to developing sustainable technologies, our mission is to reset our teaching and raise a new generation of professionals whose future is in water, wind and solar. We are embedding in our teaching an alternative way of living in a carbon neutral environment." Driven by community demand and new technologies, things are moving fast on the project which will feature solar panels on 18 buildings at the uni, one hectare of solar collectors, battery storage, hydrogen fuel cells and thermal energy storage to run air conditioning. All this will be all completed by the end of 2019. "We have the drive, the expertise, the support of government and the partners in industry to make it happen," said Dr Berry. Sharon Fechner Green sludge and stench We have had a horrendous summer with the odour that has come from the creek opposite our residential address. It has been so foul that we have been unable to use our evaporative cooling system as this tends to bring the stench inside because with this type of cooling you have to have the windows slightly open. I contacted the Council once again to complain and to their credit they did have a council worker come out on the same day. He said he would call me that afternoon . . . 4 weeks later and I'm still waiting. The Pledger Wetlands has an awful green sludge stench too. Safe Cycling in Mawson Lakes

I am sure it is no surprise to many of you to know that I am proud to be the Mayor of the City of Salisbury.

Now that legislation provides for cyclists and pedestrians to share pathways, Salisbury Council has placed markings to warn cyclists and pedestrians to keep to one side of major pathways and to give way at intersections with roads and other pathways.

Our City has the fourth largest economy in the State with a Gross Regional Product of $6.15 billion, which is 6.1 per cent of the Gross State Product. Our Council is in a sound financial position, ensuring long term financial sustainability which allows us to meet the Community’s needs and encourage investment in our city. Here are some recent developments highlighting activity and jobs growth in our city:• A new space and defence precinct has been announced for Technology Park, with 550 jobs to be created through investments by SAAB Australia and Raytheon Australia. • Mawson Lakes company, Minelab signed a deal with multinational company Caterpillar giving them access to 190 countries. • Another Mawson Lakes company, Speedcast has secured a $184 million dollar contract with NBN Co. • BAE systems will create 200 new positions due to a $1.2 billion upgrade of a world leading radar system. We can certainly all be proud of where we live and what is being accomplished here. Gillian Aldridge, MAYOR E-mail GAldridge@salisbury.sa.gov.au Phone 08 8406 8262 Mobile 0411 703 706

The photo shows the intersection of the Dry Creek Trail with Mawson Lakes Boulevard at the Douglas Mawson Bridge. The sign on the other side prohibits the use of motor scooters on the Dry Creek Trail. Other markings have been made at the intersection of the Dry Creek Trail and Mawson Link causeway at Shoalhaven, and at the diagonal pathway crossing Mawson Lakes Boulevard at Shearwater Park. Poetry Slam at Mawson Lakes Friendly Street Poets is a place where the power and beauty of words finds expression through poetry, so it was a delight to welcome a collection of clever poets to the Mawson Centre during the Fringe Festival. A poetry slam (competition) attracted many wordsmiths who recited their original jottings with themes of darkness, addiction and humour, in stories ranging from rainbows to suicide, love, heartache and "how I broke my diet on the way to breakfast". Winner of the Poetry Slam was Andrew Drake and runner-up was Wanling Liu. A copy of Wanling’s sensitive poem is to the right. Ed

Making sense by Wanling Liu Many times in our life, we see with our eyes blinded, we listen with our ears covered, we breathe with our nose blocked, and we speak with our tongue tied. I wonder what would happen if we open our eyes, uncover our ears, unblock our nose, untie our tongue. Would we see the beauty in each other? Would we listen to reason from each other? Would we breathe in the sweet air between us? Would we express our love for each other? But sadly and oftentimes, we fixate our eyes on filth, we lend our ears to rumours, we fill our lungs with stench, and we spit out words in anger. But the world remains as dark as it is, as beautiful as it is, as complicated as it is, as simple as it is. It is what we filter through our eyes, our ears, our nose and our mouth that defines the world that resides within.

Poetry readers Wanling Liu and Andrew Drake

Beautiful Garden Award Crepe Myrtle Splendour Three deep pink crepe myrtle trees add summer spender to the garden of Cheryl and Mark at 29 Grasswren Way. In addition to gorgeous flowering trees, the garden has a variety of roses including a line of 'Shocking Blue’ roses that fill the air with fragrance as you walk to the front door.

"Our yard faces north and catches the winter sun so we have ideal growing conditions," said Mark and Cheryl who built their house in 2004 and started the garden as soon as they moved in. Crepe Myrtles are an ideal tree for small gardens because they are compact and delicate and they shed their leaves in winter so if you like summer shade, but, then the warming sun of winter, this plant is worth considering. They are at their peak in late summer, tolerate dry conditions and are mostly disease resistant. The bark is soft so the plants are easy to prune into bushes or trees. Mark prunes his trees into a vase shape in August to keep them tidy and to encourage a mass of blooms next summer.

Slavery-free chocolate Munching on chocolate is an Easter tradition, but what chocolate products are you eating? Children as young as 12 years old are picking cocoa in West Africa to make the chocolate we eat. Most are forced to pick cocoa from an early age for minimal or no wages, for long hours, in dangerous working conditions, and without any possibility of attending school. Most of these children have never tasted chocolate and they never will.

Cadbury dairy milk chocolate bars made in Australia have been certified Fairtrade. All Mars Bars made in Australia are now certified Rainforest Alliance.

Child labour practices are being investigated and a variety of methods are being used to combat human trafficking and child labour.

All Nestle chocolate made in Australia and New Zealand is now UTZ certified.

The investigation looks at how each of the six biggest chocolate manufacturers (Ferrero, Hershey, Lindt & Sprüngli, Mars, Mondelēz, and Nestlé) and three leading certification systems Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ are tackling the problem in their supply chains. Chocolate eaters can send a message of

disapproval by only buying certified products. Some of these are:

Haighs source 70% of their cocoa from UTZ certified farms. For more information about slavery-free chocolate, the slavery-free certification program, the need for a living wage for cocoa farmers and the treatment of children in chocolate production, read A Matter of Taste.

Year of the Dog

by Nigella

It’s a special year - The Year of the Dog. In the Chinese zodiac, dogs are placed eleventh in a 12-year cycle of animals, and our turn has come up. The calendar is determined by the movement of the moon so it's called a lunar calendar, and the story goes that people display the characteristics of the animal they are born under.

Members of the Vietnamese Women’s Association (located in Mawson Lakes) sing a song of celebration to welcome in the Chineses New Year

In Mawson Lakes the Vietnamese Women’s Association SA held a celebration in the Denison Centre to mark the New Year. No dogs were present (I was outside looking in through the window), instead there was a big red dragon that danced around to the beat of loud drums. When it opened its mouth visitors fed it red envelopes with money hoping to receive good luck. Traditionally at New Year, everyone puts on their best clothes to celebrate because it's a time of hope for happiness and prosperity. The ladies at Mawson Lakes looked gorgeous in their traditional costumes. They sang songs, read poetry and paraded in their colourful dresses. They say that people take on the characteristics of the zodiac so this should be a good year for newborns because the dog is a true companion, associated with loyalty, honesty, intelligence, and a strong sense of right and wrong. Dogs are good-natured and they tend to play well with others so they are popular in social circles. Lucky if you are born between Feb 2018 and Feb 2019. You’re in the Year of the Dog.

Youth speaks: Time

by Preet

Over the centuries, humans have undoubtedly become the smartest and most influential creatures on Earth. Our brains have evolved to store and understand much more information than any other species. For example, did you know that sheep can memorize up to 50 faces and that is considered extremely smart? However, sometimes some questions exceed the limit of our understanding and leave our brains frazzled. A few months back, our class was given a simple task; write anything and everything you know about Time. It was a simple task. However, the group discussion that came after the task quickly escalated into a giant debate on a simple yet meaningful question…..

that time would still be there, we just wouldn’t have any reference point to measure it. In the end, we agreed we were getting off topic yet we all were very intrigued by the topic. Now that you think about it, there are many questions we can’t answer, from the iconic "what comes first, the chicken or the egg" to questions about the universe. Look around, you will be surprised how many everyday things can turn into something as large as the universe if you choose to think about it. Preet is in Year 6 at Mawson Lakes School

TIME PUZZLE Use the clues to find the correct clock from the 8 possibilities. Solution is on page 30.

What is time?

This might seem pretty straight forward to you. Time is an everyday thing that we don’t give much thought to. When including the concept of space however, things got pretty deep. Time is a measurement but what exactly is it measuring? One might say that time is using the sun and the orbit of our Earth to count the moments that pass by but what if you’re on a lone star? If there is no sun or orbit to guide you, would there still be time? Many argued
